Copies of all three can be found on the website, ashlandmuseum. org or at the museum at 105 Hanover Ave. in Ashland.

There is a scavenger hunt for inside the Museum, around Ashland, and for information found on the website. Each has 10 questions and covers Civil War material. While geared to sixth-graders, all three can be completed by students in other grades.

ASHLAND -- High school students in Hanover County Public Schools will return to an eight-block A-B schedule when the 2021-2022 school year begins in the fall.

Action was taken by Hanover County School Board members during the Tuesday, May 11, regular meeting.

Due to the pandemic, students were placed on 4x4 traditional block schedules for the current year that requires students to attend the same four classes for extended periods daily. The A-B scheduling allows students to attend some classes on certain days, and others on alternating days.

Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Greif announced that change and others in her pre-

sentation of a proposed return to learn plan for the upcoming year that board members will consider for approval at their June meeting.

During a public comment period prior to Greif’s presentation, several students said they understood the reasoning employed when the 4x4 schedule was instituted. Even considering the health concerns addressed by the traditional block schedule, students said the schedule allowed little time for homework or after school employment or activities.

One student said the schedule was especially difficult for Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) students who were, in some cases, forced to take final AP tests a full semester after the class was completed. see HCPS, pg. 7

Hanover Salutes is an opportunity to recognize students making a commitment to serve in the United States Armed Forces after graduation.

“Although we are unable to conduct our traditional in-person Hanover Salutes program due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and related health concerns, we are pleased to share that we are honoring our future heroes with a video release on social media, similar to last year,” Chris R. Economic Development works to keep dollars here

By Jim Ridolphi for Ashland-Hanover Local HANOVER -- Finance Director Lauren Null presented a positive third quarter financial update at last Wednesday’s regular Hanover County Board of Supervisors meeting. The figures in that report indicated that revenues are exceeding expectations in most categories, with a major portion of that increase resulting from increased sales tax returns.

That means people are spending money in Hanover County, and Economic Director Linwood Thomas wants to make sure a fair share of those dollars stay right here at home. He unveiled a new Shop Local program last week that highlights Hanover businesses in an up-close and personal way, and urges consumers to spend their hard-earned money locally.

Over the next several weeks, Hanover businesses will be featured in video spots and a weekly giveaway will provide participants to support their local favorites.

An accompanying app called Here in Hanover, VA also is being introduced that includes a listing of all local businesses, including parks

“Overall, small businesses make up two-thirds of new jobs created nationally and almost 44% of GDP (gross domestic product). Locally, our existing businesses continue to be the backbone of our economy here in

Thomas said the new Shop Local program is a continuation of his office’s efforts to support the county’s thriving business community.

“Hanover has been very lucky to see its fair share of large project announcements over the last 48 months, but our number one priority remains our small businesses,” Thomas said in an interview last week.

“They are truly the backbone of our local economy.”

While other localities have suffered enormous setbacks due to the economic impacts of the pandemic, Hanover County is emerging in solid shape. Thomas said that’s because of the nature of the Hanover business community.

“Over the last several years pre-COVID, we had seen exorbitant growth in our small business community,” he said.

“We have a blue collar mentality here in Hanover and that has served us well and to some degree help insulate through the pandemic. That doesn’t mean certain industry sectors are still not struggling and we recognize that.”

And that’s where the shop local program enters the picture, but it’s not the first time emphasis has been placed on Hanover County and we are always looking for new and creative ways to support their growth and success. I encourage citizens to purchase locally when possible. These revenues support important community priorities, including our Sheriff ’s Office, Fire and EMS, Hanover schools, and our community-based services. As we roll out our shop local campaign -- I, and your entire Hanover County Board of Supervisors, want to personally thank our small

the importance of spending local dollars at community businesses.

“Shop local campaigns in general are not something new to Hanover but we wanted to develop an interactive marketing blitz that would be fun and reflect the diversity of our business community,” Thomas said.

An important element of the new campaign is a short video that spotlights local businesses. “Our department developed a video to highlight close to 20 small businesses in Hanover County and the Town of Ashland,” Thomas said.

The video, coupled with a variety of marketing materials, is designed to better connect the local community with the businesses that serve it.

“We want to tell the story of ‘why’ it is important to spend your tax dollars locally and how that comes back to our community. We have developed marketing materials which include window clings and posters that can be customized along with the video on our website at hanovervirginia.com.”

The program is interactive and allows residents to go on the site and tout their favorite local establishment.

“Over the next three weeks we will be encouraging people to post pictures of their favor-

ite local establishments and watering holes while tagging at least three of their friends on our Facebook page with the hashtag #HereInHanoverVA to register for our giveaways, which will also come from local businesses,” Thomas said.

Thomas said the new campaign emphasizes the importance of local dollars to the economy, and how local residents can support the growing business community in Hanover.

“For every dollar spent at a local business on average, 64 cents of that comes back to the community through both direct and indirect investment.

We call that trickle-down economics and it is very powerful,” he said.

“Not only do those dollars go to support the businesses themselves but also equally important is the services those taxes help provide for our schools, sheriff ’s department, fire and EMS along with social services,” Thomas added.

The Shop Local campaign is another step in the effort to return to normalcy after a period of economic uncertainty caused by the COVID pandemic. Thomas said his effort pivoted to assist local businesses as soon as the crisis hit, and

those efforts are ongoing.

“During the pandemic our department, in conjunction with strong support from the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, moved quickly to develop a resiliency grant program that was able to help close to 70 small businesses hardest hit by the epidemic,” Thomas said.

The assistance didn’t end there.

“We also developed a hiring application that connected local Hanover and Ashlandbased employers who were hiring to those seeking employment,” Thomas said. “We also partnered with the Town of Ashland and the Hanover Chamber of Commerce to distribute over 250 PPE (personal protective equipment) kits to our existing businesses. All these efforts were well received but the work doesn’t stop there.

As we come out of the pandemic we are once again looking for new ways to help our business community.”

Thomas is excited about the new initiative and expects a good response from the community. He said one goal of the program is “to help educate people on the importance and impact they have on our community when they spend their

hard earn paycheck locally.”

He also said the new program should “help drive traffic to our small businesses, which are the ones who have been most affected over the last year.”

He knows the effort will require a group response from Hanover residents and feels certain they will answer the call.

“We cannot do this on our own! We ask the community to get involved, have some fun and go out and shop local! For those interested in additional marketing materials that cannot be printed on our website at hanovervirginia.com, please reach out to Jessica Hartness, our business manager for window clings and posters,” he said.

Thomas credited his staff with a tremendous amount of time and dedication to this project, but also included extended appreciation to the team that made the project work.

Hurley is in his sixth year as the Director of School Counseling at Patrick Henry High School. His favorite part of the job, he said, is the relationships he builds with students and teachers.

“I love being able to see students grow from their freshman year to graduation, watching them take steps to achieve their post-secondary goals,” he said. “I also love to conduct small group counseling on topics that are meaningful to our students.”

T

o say the 2020-2021 year for Hanover County Public Schools’ graduating seniors has been different is an understatement, but, thanks to the efforts of many at the Central Office of Hanover County Public Schools, they will -- unlike the Class of 2020 -- take part in commencement ceremonies.

While we praise the work involved in planning two days of graduations at Meadow Event Park, we also will continue our tradition of recognizing the honor graduates representing the county’s four high schools -- Atlee, Hanover, Mechanicsville, and Patrick Henry.

Normally, we would be launching the four-week series of profiles spotlighting the valedictorian and salutatorian next week. However, this has been a unique academic year in how students have taken classes, so the final rankings may not be available to us until after commencement ceremonies are held.

School officials have been very cooperative and agree the acknowledgement is very much deserved.

Note to the honor graduates: Please reach out to your school counselor to get the form to submit to me (mkinser@mechlocal. com). I’ll also need you to include your senior portrait.

This year we are adding scholarships and recipients. This will become an annual highlight at graduation time.

And, as usual, Dr. Michael Gill, superintendent of HCPS, will share with us his remarks that will be delivered to the graduates on June 18-19. His speech and the list of all graduates will hopefully appear in our June 23 edition.

With an overwhelmed school division preparing for two days of graduations, please be patient. We will publish all articles as soon as possible.

Remembering a mother’s love, the greatest gift of all

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist At age 44, my life was busily progressing up and down the ladder of success, centered on strategic career moves that would allow me to achieve the success I so aggressively sought.

Caregiving was the furthest thing from my mind on the day I got the call from my mother informing me she had been diagnosed with cancer.

I took the news in stride, never realizing the life-changing affects

those simple words had on my mother’s life, and eventually mine.

A credit to her tenacious nature and irrevocable spirit, she fought the brave fight during the first years of the disease’s relentless assault, and I went on with my life, only briefly interrupting it to take her to an occasional doctor’s appointment.

As the months progressed, the disease became more debilitating, and caring for my mother became almost full-time work. I responded by hiring a lady to sit with her during the day,

touched a still active and creative mind, and she made us promise to keep her at home for as long as possible.

It was then I realized that the most important question facing us was not financial, but emotional. Protecting my mother’s dignity became top priority, eventually leading to some lifechanging decisions for both of us.

Well, as they say, “All good things must come to an end”.

For 16 years we have had a super person on the Hanover County School Board.

How many time have I heard Norman Sulser state, “Are we doing the very best for our students?”

With tireless efforts, Norman has fought for upgrading our schools and curriculum.

Sometimes met with opposition, he kept fighting because he knew that providing our students with the very best would prepare them to meet the challenges they will face.

Not sure who will be nominated to represent the Cold Harbor District, but there are size 16 EEE shoes needing to be filled.

Greif said school officials heard the complaints factored in the decision to return to an A-B schedule but also said the benefits of the 4x4 scheduling should not be discounted.

“As you heard from some speakers earlier this evening, there is some legitimate concern about a 4x4 schedule,” Greif said.

“But, I will also contend that there are legitimate benefits to a 4x4 schedule. What we have said all along … is that we made a 4x4 decision for health reasons . . . for the best opportunity to keep kids safe and to be able to make changes as we needed if the pandemic were to evolve in a certain direction,” Greif said.

The Trades Center, IB, AP, ACA and Health Sciences Center will all be open for faceto-face instruction and transportation will be provided for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year.

Greif said there may be some class restraints based on staffing but is expecting to offer students a “rich and robust” schedule when they return in the fall. She also said online schedules will mirror face-to-face instruction as closely as possible.

“To be honest, our course offerings at the secondary level in the Online School will be limited with 93.5% of our students indicating that they will come back face-to-face. That means our population in the Online School will be smaller and it will be a little more challenging to provide a wide metric,” Greif said.

Virtual Virginia will be provided to allow students access to classes not available through the Hanover Online School.

Regarding that return to learn plan, Superintendent Michael Gill told board members that more than 93% of parents recently surveyed opted for face-to-face instruction in the fall. He also noted recently signed legislation that requires

school districts to offer faceto-face instruction to any student whose parent or guardian requests it.

“A lot of decisions this year going into next year have been made for us,” Gill said. “A few weeks ago we did a preliminary survey . . . to provide feedback for us from a planning standpoint to get an idea of how many teachers we would need in the face-to-face environment and how many teachers we would need in the online environment.”

Gill described those results as “overwhelming” in support of face-to-face instruction.

The initial estimates are providing officials with what is expected to be a close to full return to classroom learning, and all monies dedicated to salaries contained in the budget are allocated to classroom positions.

The Online School will be staffed according to the demand for online classes and will be funded with supplemental funds from COVID-19 relief monies.

Greif outlined initial return to learn plans for elementary, middle and high school students. She said differentiation would continue in some elementary math and reading classes “in order to accelerate learning,” and teachers will meet students “where they are” in regards to academic progress to address an expected variety of needs.

“Although differentiation does happen within that workshop model, we wanted to reassure our families that acceleration is still something that we believe in for our students . . . and even if the model looks a little different . . . the goal is still to provide each student with the resources and support they need to find their greatest potential.”

Increased focus on emotional well-being also is part of the return plan and face-to-face learning will return for physical education, music, art and library. Online students will access synchronous online art,

music, physical education and library services in programs that feature interactive options.

“Our focus will be on meeting students where they are,” Greif told board members.

Middle schoolers will continue on an eight-block schedule with continued focus on emotional well-being and establishing healthy routines. Two elective choices will be available for middle school students during the 2021-2022 session, and full blocks of health and physical education will be offered.

Expectations of the plan are directly correlated to the changing nature of regulations, and Greif said staff will continue to monitor those developments and adjust the plan accordingly.

The superintendent said he hoped the presentation provided some answers for parents and student regarding next year and the default for next year will be face-to-face, meaning parents do not have to opt in. Parents who prefer online will need to submit requests.

Board members also heard the first equity report, the result of a request from the panel to compile a comprehensive view of equity in HCPS requested last year.

Dr. Brian Maltby, discipline review officer, and Patrick Henry High School mathematics teacher Dr. Megan Greenbaum headed the study that compiled data from a variety of sources to provide important statistics and trends. The school board tasked school administrators with preparing an annual report that focused on equitable opportunities, student achievement, discipline outcomes human resources, and resource allocation.

Data revealed that 76% of Hanover students are white, while 9.5% are African American and 6.2% are Asian American. That data revealed an inequity in discipline outcomes specifically regarding shortterm suspensions, in that Black

Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win Patrick Henry, Atlee baseball teams get first victories of season

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND – Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, or vice versa.

In a county with strong baseball tradition, it is not difficult to see all four Hanover high school baseball teams beat up on one another. So far this season, Hanover and Mechanicsville have been doing most of the beating. Atlee and Patrick Henry had been doing all of the getting beaten.

That changed last week when both the Patriots and Raiders each picked up their first victory.

Patrick Henry got into the win column first with an 9-4 win over the Mustangs on May 11. The Patriots benefitted from 16 gimmes from the Mechanicsville pitching staff.

“Thirteen base on balls and three hit batters – and three hits. That scored nine runs,” said Patrick Henry head baseball coach Sam Hart. “That helped us out. We had some good at-bats. We had a lot of traffic through the bases by being selective in the (strike) zone.”

While the platoon of Mechanicsville pitchers struggled – only two of the five, starter Brett Allen and closer Cole Nicely, kept the Patriots they faced from reaching home – Patrick Henry’s two pitchers, starter Eoin Rossman and

“Eoin Rossman pitched a great ball game for us and hit a three-run home run for us there at the end,” Hart said. “The sophomore Patrick Brizendine came in and got the last six outs for us.”

The COVID-19 pandem-

ic has contributed to Patrick Henry’s diamond woes this year. Most of its players were due to get their first varsity experience last year, but the season was cancelled. All but one of the Patriot players – including a large number of seniors – are essentially playing their

rookie season now.

“We have a lot of seniors, but they’ve never played varsity baseball,” Hart said. “We have one person out of 16 that’s played varsity baseball at Patrick Henry, and that was Eoin. He led us on the mound and led us with the home run (on May 11)

– in fact, he had two hits that night. He’s been a good leader for us, a quiet leader.”

Rossman did what he could against Atlee Friday, but the pitching bugs that gave the Patriots a boost against Mechanicsville bit them against the Raiders.

“We took a lot of bases on balls Tuesday night and gave a lot tonight,” Hart said.

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND – For much of the 80 minutes on Patrick Henry’s pitch, Atlee and the Patriots battled themselves to a standstill. It was a pitched battle, too, with plenty of contact – pushing, pulling, aggressive tackles – and also with plenty of pleading to referees for sympathetic calls.

Each team got its share of calls, and resultant penalty kicks and yellow cards.

But only one of the teams got what it needed most: goals.

The Patriots defeated their visitors 2-0.

Thirty-six minutes in, Patrick Henry’s Will Werner got the only goal the Patriots really needed.

“It was a beautiful goal,” said Patrick Henry head coach Chuck Altizer. “High ball, came down to his feet, and one-time cracked it. We work on in practice and he took it to the game today. It was a great goal for him, good feeling for him. I was very proud of that.”

The Patriot fans were as well. The cheer from the stands could be heard with ease near Patrick Henry’s baseball and softball diamonds.

The significance of getting the first goal did not escape anyone.

We got that early [goal] and were able to relax and play a good second half,” Altizer said.

The Patriots did not have to wait until late in the second half for an insurance goal. Greg Cover put the ball in the corner of the Raider net in the 57th minute to make it 2-0.

“Again, it’s things we work on in practice: one-twos, be quick, be smart, relax in the final third. We did that,” Altizer said. “We played a beautiful one-two between [Cofer] and my wing, Julio Osorio. Both of them are dangerous strikers and they turned the defense

around one-two and [Cofer] was able to find some space and punch in a goal.

“Greg is one of our top scorers and whenever he can get a chance to put a foot on the ball, we’ll take it in the box in that situation.”

Cofer had to thread the ball through a crowd of Atlee defenders.

“He’s got that capability,” Altizer said. “Sometimes you want to shoot in crowds because you deflections. We teach that, ‘Get that shot on!’

We tell the rest of the guys to stay on their toes in case the ball comes back around – maybe we get a second shot. Especially within shooting range, about 20 yards, we want our guys shooting the ball. Anybody who’s on that field in that situation, they’re all capable of putting the ball in the net.”

Cofer’s goal all but sealed the coffin for the Raiders, but they were not inclined to fold.

They pressed aggressive attacks throughout. Neither team held an obvious advantage in terms of possession time.

But Patrick Henry’s stubborn defense, anchored by goalkeeper Austin Anderson, kept the ball out of the Patriot net.

Patrick Henry improved to 2-1-1 with the win.

“We talked about it today,” Altizer said. “We felt like we played really well in the loss and the tie and didn’t get the result we wanted. But one of the things we talked about today, the reason for that, is that we didn’t take care of the little things in those games. Today I thought we did a better job of mentally focusing and taking advantage of the little things and that helped us out here.”

Were it not for that error, Brizendine might have pitched a scoreless second inning, too.

All four of the runs he gave up that inning came across after two outs. Brizendine finished the inning with a strikeout to his counterpart, Atlee starting pitcher Mike Joyce.

While the Patriot pitchers struggled, Joyce pitched a gem for the Raiders, giving up two hits, two walks and no runs in a complete-game five innings of work.

Friday’s win was a nice turnaround for Atlee after a frustrating 19-7 loss to Hanover on May 11.

“We had a good week of practice after the debacle against Hanover,” said Atlee

head coach John Corbin. “The kids responded well. They’re starting to stick to the game plan and execute when they’re called upon.”

Corbin also praised his defense and offense, beginning with Joyce’s performance on the mound.

“We played solid defense.

Mike Joyce on the mound got it done, got ahead of a lot of hitters,” Corbin said. “We had some timely hits, finally, that went our way. So all around, it’s be best game we’ve played all year.”

Bronson Davis led the Raiders at the plate, going 2-for3 with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored. Gavin Bralley went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Aaron McKeever chipped in a tworun double, and Joyce added a double of his own.

HANOVER – The Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office will once again be hosting the Youth Citizen’s Police Academy. The Youth Citizen’s Police Academy will be held Monday through Friday, June 21-25. This academy will begin each day at 9 a.m. and conclude by 4 p.m.

There will be no cost to participants. This program will be available to students who are rising 9th through 12th graders. The applicant must be a Hanover resident.

Mrs. Frances Jackson-Jones celebrated her 103rd birthday on April 28. Nana (pronounced Ni-ni), as she is affectionately known, resides in the Brown Grove Community in Ashland.

She and her late husband, Deacon Willie R. Jackson Sr. operated the neighborhood store, Jackson’s Grocery, for several years. Nana sang in the Senior Choir and sponsored many programs at Brown Grove Baptist Church. She also was involved in civic and religious-affiliated organizations.

Nana worked at the Ashland Shirt Factory until it closed.

Saundra R. Watkins said, “She is loved by so many and we are truly blessed to be able to celebrate this 103rd birthday with her.” Lt. James R. Cooper, public information officer of the HCSO, said,”Deputy Ryan Vasconi was honored to participate in her birthday celebration as she is his “Adopted Senior!”

RICHMOND – State officials led by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM), local officials, and Dominion Energy will conduct a quarterly test of the early warning siren system around the North Anna Power Station at about 11:10 a.m. today (Wednesday, May 19) and the Emergency Alert System.

During an emergency when sirens sound, residents should listen to local and state officials and local media outlets that broadcast emergency information for updates and instructions. Emergency guides are mailed to surrounding households and additional information about the siren system, emergency notifications, and safety planning can be found on Dominion Energy’s website.

Firefighter Dallas Larsen of the Laurel Meadow Station 17 and Firefighter Eric Harper of Chickahominy Station 10 recently attended a FEMA-funded Flammable Liquids by Rail/Crude Class 3 in Pueblo, Colorado. This program is designed to educate and better prepare for incidents surrounding flammable liquids during possible derailments throughout the railway system.

With major railways in Hanover County, it’s critical to know not only when to intervene, but how to intervene to prevent catastrophic loss of life and property. The three-day program included classroom, hands-on skills, and live fire training using a train derailment prop. It consisted of 20+ tank cars in a simulated derailment to learn how to properly apply massive amounts of water and foam. They also learned how to control leaks and extinguish fires of specific hazards to prevent further environmental damage.

Equity and other issues also were apparently on the mind of a group of citizens who rallied prior to last week’s meeting in the parking lot of the Central Office.

A group calling itself Hanover Patriots announced the rally as an opportunity to “Free Our Schools . . . from critical race theory (equity), masks, indoctrination, COVID-19 tyranny, Anti-American Marxist agenda”.

Several of those participants spoke during the public comment period and expressed objections to the county’s policy that requires students to wear masks, a proposed Virginia Department of Education mathematics initiative that some speakers equated to a dumbing down of math selections, and the teaching of critical race theory in Hanover classrooms.

Regarding the definition of equity, Gill said, “If you ask 10 people, most likely you are going to get 10 different definitions. It is a word that has come to mean many things to many people.

Gill clarified the meaning of equity from an operational standpoint. “The definition is simply to provide every student with the resources and materials so that each child can maximize his or her success.

“It is not to limit the abilities or opportunities of one in favor of another. Rather, as a rising tide lifts all ships, so too do we have the responsibility to lift and maximize the potential of every child,” Gill said.

Chairman John Axselle reminded the speakers that both the mask wearing regulations and the Virginia Pathways mathematics initiative were state issues and were not under the schools board’s purview.

Gill said the system will follow state law requiring masks, but said those guidelines are constantly changing. “As it pertains to masks, frankly, we don’t know what it will say in regards to masks in September.”

The board is planning action on the return to learn plan at its June meeting, but Gill said there could be more changes and updates would be provided through the upcoming weeks.

In other matters, the superintendent was the subject of a bad news/good news set of motions and approvals from the board in an item added to the action agenda for last week’s meeting.
