SHLAND -Downtown Ashland Association announces the next Ashland Train Day will be held on April 30, 2022. The beloved street festival and celebration of trains will become a spring event, to be hosted the last weekend in April annually.

“We look forward to continuing Ashland Train Day’s long history of family-friendly fun in Downtown Ashland,” said Executive Director Maggie Longest. “By moving the event away from the busy holiday season and into the spring, we hope even more families and train lovers will come to Ashland and join the celebration.”

ASHLAND – Stacie Taylor, the Instructional Technology Resource Teacher at Bell Creek Middle School and the Hanover County Online School, has been selected as the 20202021 Hanover County Public Schools Teacher of the Year.

Taylor has served students in the county for 18 years, first as a history teacher and, since 2012, an Instructional Technology Resource Teacher, collaboratively planning with teachers, creating engaging learning experiences for students, coteaching lessons, and working on division-wide projects, among other things.

Board accepts six nominations for two school board seats Candidates vying for open seats in Cold Harbor & South Anna

ANOVER— The Hanover County Board of Supervisors received six nominations for two soon-tobe open Hanover County School Board seats in the Cold Harbor and South Anna Districts at a public hearing last week.

While 16-year school board veteran Norman Sulser is ending more than 40 years of public service with the county and did not seek reappointment, current South Anna school board representative Kelly Evko did submit her name for nomination and reappointment.

She joins two other candidates, including Army veteran Bob May and financial specialist Aleisha Miles vying for the South Anna seat.

Supervisor Sue Dibble will select one of those names for board consideration at the May 26 meeting.

Three candidates were nominated for the Cold Harbor District seat, including two former teachers. Patrick Wells and Steven Ikenberry have years of experience in the classroom, while Sabrina Civils has been involved with school finance and management and cited that experience for consideration.

Cold Harbor supervisor Michael Herzberg thanked Sulser for his many years of service and said he would be meeting with all three candidates prior to announcing his decision on May 26.

“I want to thank Mr. Sulser for everything he has done, and thank Mary Wallace for all of her years of support,” Herzberg said.

Once chairman Sean Davis, Henry District, gaveled to open the public hearing, Sulser offered his closing remarks and an endorsement for one of the candidates hoping to replace him.

“It’s been a wonderful 16 years and it was an

honor and privilege to serve you and the citizens for those 16 years,” Sulser said.

He told supervisors that he and his wife, Mary Wallace, decided that 24 years as a reserve deputy sheriff and 16 on the school board was enough.

“That 40 years is a lot of service to Hanover County and we both agreed that I had done enough for Hanover County,” he continued.

Regarding his replacement, Sulser endorsed Steve Ikenberry. “I taught for 12 years with Mr Ikenberry at Lee-Davis High School and I think he’d do an outstanding job,” he said. “I know we have a lot of good candidates here tonight, but that’s the person I’d like to endorse.”

Ikenberry, a 1980 VMI graduate, Air Force veteran and former social studies teacher and coach at Lee-Davis, said he embraces the diversity of the public school system and pledged to embrace all kids if appointed to serve.

“Public schools give us the diversity to look at our entire population, all representing Hanover County,” Ikenberry said. “I always tried to get the most I possibly could out of those kids. I’d ready to jump back in the system and move the ball forward for Hanover County.”

Ikenberry spent 28 years at Lee-Davis teaching and coaching track and cross country.

Patrick Wells also is a former HCPS teacher and the parent of two children who attend county schools. With 19 years of education experience in addition to his role as a parent, Wells told the supervisors that he has a unique perspective on vital issues facing the school system.

“I am interested in using my experiences to help continue to make HCPS (Hanover County Public Schools) a great division to work in and send our children to,” he said during the public hearing.

Sabrina Civils also is a candidate for the vacated Cold Harbor seat, and said her experience in school finance would be a valuable asset on the board.

She also has served as past president of the Cold Harbor Elementary PTA and is the parent of children who attend Hanover County schools.

And the incredible flexibility, perseverance, and compassion our students, parents, and community members have shown has also been an integral part of this team effort.”

Registration open for Youth Citizen’s Police Academy HANOVER – The Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office will once again be hosting the Youth Citizen’s Police Academy. The Youth Citizen’s Police Academy will be held Monday through Friday, June 21-25.

This academy will begin each day at 9 a.m. and conclude by 4 p.m.

There will be no cost to participants.

This program will be available to students who are rising 9th through 12th graders. The

applicant must be a Hanover resident.

This academy is designed to give the youth of Hanover County a chance to see the day-to-day operations of their Sheriff ’s Office and will allow participants to interact with the men and women of the Sheriff ’s Office.

The academy also will offer the participants an inside look into a career in law enforcement.

The training will consist of a variety of law enforce-

ment topics that will give the youth a better understanding of how and why the members of the Sheriff ’s Office do what they do.

Klein also placed second in the General News Photo category for his shot of Nicholas Bannon singing the song “Feelin’ Good” at the 2020 Hanover Idol contest.

The pair combined for a second place in the Multimedia Report category for their package, “B-17 Flying Fortress visits as reminder of sacrifice,” about the visit of the Commemorative Air Force’s World War II bomber “Sentimental Journey” at Hanover County Municipal Airport.

“I really enjoy the variety of photos taken of the planes and the research that [went] into producing this story,” one judge said about the package.

Lawrence claimed another second place award in the Sports Column Writing category for his commentaries about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on sports.

“Writing about the crazy world of sports during the pandemic is a real challenge, and one you met for sure,” a judge said.

Vandeloecht won third place in the Sports Writing Portfolio category for a trio of stories he wrote for Powhatan Today. The judges singled out one of his stories, a remembrance of former Powhatan High School football coach Ernie Henderson, who died in November.

“The story on the coach stands out from the crowd,” one judge wrote.

Lawrence also earned an award for another remembrance of a life lost last year.

His story, “Remembering the Yellow Jackets’ No. 1 fan: Tommy Inge died after a brief illness,” won third in the Feature Writing Portfolio for a remembrance of Inge, a long-time fixture at RandolphMacon College, who died of complications of COVID-19 in March.

hile we enjoy speaking to and helping our readers and advertisers, I’ve realized it’s time to reintroduce the staff of Richmond Suburban News (The Mechanicsville Local, The Goochland Gazette, Powhatan Today, and Ashland-Hanover Local) to you and explain our roles and responsibilities.

Let’s start with this publication. As the managing editor, I am fully hands-on with it, as well as Ashland-Hanover Local. I also am involved with the news and sports content for all four newspapers. Dave Lawrence joins me as sports

Hidden (Mrs. Marshall’s potato salad) gem available everywhere

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist I pass by the refrigerated section near the deli most days without noticing the seemingly unending selection of prepared side dishes.

Rarely do I even notice the familiar logo that sits atop neatly packed containers of Mrs. Marshall’s Potato Salad.

I thought back to the first time I tasted what some consider the South’s finest potato salad rivaled

only by its closest competitor, Sally Bell.

I was fortunate to have my first helping served up by Mrs. Marshall herself. But, she wasn’t the one responsible for the well-guarded recipe. For that story, you have to go back an additional generation.

In recent years, the iconic potato salad has become synonymous with all things Richmond, and the tasty treat is available at markets throughout the area.

Back in the early 1980s, the only way to obtain Mrs. Marshall’s potato salad was to go see Mrs. Marshall.

She ran a small shop on Strawberry Street and served the best ham biscuits that were lovingly heated and dabbed with homemade mayonnaise.

Coupled with a scoop of her freshly made potato salad, it was Southern cuisine at its finest.

I became an instant regular and visited the small shop several times a week, always seeing Mrs. Marshall,

and, in the early days, Mr. Marshall greeted customers in the small lobby.

Robinson Street still maintained a sense of neighborhood in those days complete with small family-owned businesses. Before supermarkets beckoned shoppers to the edges of the city, small neighborhood centers provided goods and services to all within walking distance.

The area was enjoying a revitalization in the 1980s, and a new group of Richmonders discovered

the hidden gems of Robinson Street, including Buddy’s, a favorite Richmond gathering spot for decades.

And Mr. and Mrs. Marshall still served up their delicious potato salad from the small storefront until they finally took a much-deserved retirement.

Donnie Marshall represented the third generation to produce and serve the famous treat, often aided by his wife Mary Anna.

Since Donnie was a well-known fixture in the Richmond area, the devoted fans continued to make the trek to Robinson to enjoy the homemade delight.

The small storefront became a gathering spot for many of Donnie’s old Freeman High School buddies, and the unique flavor of Mrs. Marshall’s recipe was enjoyed by a new generation of Richmonders.

The Marshalls sold their business in 1996, but it wasn’t the end for the famous potato salad. New owners opened Mrs. Marshall’s see HIDDEN, pg. 7

May is mental health awareness month, now what?

(Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Clair Norman of the Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation.)

I

n the early ’90s while attending JMU, I recall my communications professor Dr. Mae Franz stating, “Do not list raising awareness as a goal, it is not measurable.” She never said it wasn’t important.

I innately knew awareness was required to educate and inspire positive change. I held tightly to its importance, even though it is lofty and immeasurable. Whether shifts occur from conversation or public relations, awareness is key.

Thanks to Dr. Franz and lived experience, I learned awareness is the catalyst for positive change which is, in fact, measurable.

I was aware my niece, Cameron Gallagher, struggled with mental health challenges.

I felt deeply for her suffering.

Her loneliness caused by stigma still breaks my heart.

After a particularly difficult period, which included inpatient hospitalization, my sis-

ter asked me to offer Cameron private yoga. I cherish the experience beyond measure.

My awareness of Cameron’s mental health challenges grew. My love for her and my compassion for teens grew immeasurably. She educated me through conversation and silence about her difficulties and her hope.

Cameron craved healing and peace. She was willing to give yoga a chance. Her awareness of the benefits of yoga led her to the action of practice. Yoga became her hope-in-action.

Cameron will always be my catalyst for compassionate action regarding teen mental health. She indeed, raised my awareness.

Now what?

Yoga with Cameron was in full effect. She was reading books, journaling and practicing regularly. It was working and it was cool to her.

On the morning of March 16, 2014, we did not know our last class was behind us.

The kind-hearted Cameron left us the biggest PR campaign for teen mental health. It started with raising awareness. Cameron didn’t much like math, so I expect she cared little about how to measure awareness.

It started with self-reflection. Cameron asked questions like, “If I am not afraid to talk about it, why are you?”

She stated, “I would love for the community to open their eyes and see this is not an

Lee and Ann King, a member of Friendship Café and a volunteer since the pandemic started, organize the pickup.

Lee said she also makes phone calls reminding folks to pick up their groceries.

“This program is a blessing for our community.”

It never fails to bring back memories of Robinson Street and those warmed ham rolls prepared by Mrs Robinson and later Donnie and his wife.

The Marshalls made their famous potato salad in a small kitchen behind the counter, and the hospitality was served by a family devoted to the product.

Donnie and his parents are long deceased, but the dedication and hard work of a family are still providing Richmonders with a culinary treat as unique as Robinson Street itself.

And that makes us lucky.

Baseball begins season of in-county battles

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – The battles of some of the area’s best baseball teams began last week as all four Hanover County teams began a regular season confined to beating up on each other.

After the first pair of games for each team, two finished the week undefeated and two still have to earn a win.

Hanover and Mechanicsville finished the week with two wins, Atlee and Patrick Henry with none. The ranking so far will sort itself Tuesday – after this edition went to press – when The Hawks hosted the Mustangs and the Raiders hosted the Patriots.

Hanover and Mechanicsville have a fairly similar game plan: They both plan to rely on good pitching and good defense.

Both were on display last week.

“Our team this year is kind of built around our pitching staff and our defense,” said Hanover head coach Tyler Kane. “We got a couple of quality starts the first two games.

Levi Huesman threw against Atlee on Friday and Seth Keller started against Patrick Henry.

Marcus Van Alstine came in in both of those games in relief and threw really well.”

The other county teams have their share of pitching talent. Atlee’s Gavin Bralley struck out five in a four-inning start against Mechanicsville. Mike Joyce and Gunnar Stromberg combined for 10 strikeouts against Hanover Friday.

A platoon of Patriot pitchers got off to a rough start on April

27 against Hanover. Patrick Brizendine, Eoin Rossman and Jack Kaczmarek combined for eight strikeouts Friday at Mechanicsville. Only three of the seven runs they gave up to the Mustangs were earned.

Three area girls competed in the Virginia High School League Girls Open.

None won any metal, but two got valuable experience early in their high school careers and one – in her final high school competition – set a standard of grit that will prepare her well for her next adventure.

King William sent a pair of girls, senior Arria Gross and sophomore Kyla Blanton, to the event, which was held on April 26 at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg.

Mechanicsville sent one, freshman, Madison Lehr.

Lehr finished in a threeway tie for 16th with a nine-over 79. Gross finished 31st with a 17-over 87, and Blanton was in a tie for 33rd with a 19-over 90.

By Rob Witham for The Local MECHANICSVILLE – In the book of Proverbs, you’ll find the axiom “iron sharpens iron.”

Anyone who’s followed high school softball in Hanover County over the past decade knows both the depth of the level of talent, and the breadth of the level of intensity when any two teams collide.

So, with county teams only playing each other during the regular season due to COVID-19, Atlee, Hanover, Mechanicsville and Patrick Henry will see each other four times before beginning postseason play. The first week of the season has already shown that all four could be primed for deep playoff runs.

After shutting out Patrick Henry 7-0 to open the season, the Hanover Hawks hosted Atlee Thursday night, a showdown in the circle between experience, in Raider senior Kara Hammock, and youth, in Hanover freshman Lilly Parrish.

Atlee (1-1) got leadoff hits in each of the first three innings, two from Kelly Ayer on a double to open the game and a single in the third. But the Raiders stranded five runners in that period, opening the door for the Hawks to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Zoie Melton, hit by a pitch with one out, scored two batters later on a fielder’s choice from Melissa Acors.

The Raiders answered in the top of the fourth as, with runners at second and third, McKenna Jones grounded out to shortstop, but on the play, courtesy runner Gianna Booker scored from third while Bailey Bucholz grabbed the Hanover defense’s attention trying to reach third base.

was Parrish versus Hammock in a pitch for pitch battle. The Hawks put the winning run at second in the bottom of the seventh, but an Acors fly ball to left was handled by Riley Smith, forcing extra innings.

But two batters into the eighth inning, the heavens opened. A brief, but heavy rain sent fans scurrying for cover, and the Hanover coaching staff to their supply of “Turface”.

Close to an hour later, play returned, and for both pitchers,

simply gripping the ball became a battle in and of itself.

With no runs in the eighth, the international tiebreaker came into play for the first time in the ninth, placing a runner at second to start the inning. Atlee scored on a Ayer squeeze bunt that plated Jones from third base.

Beasley advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on a sacrifice bunt, and then home on another wild pitch for the 3-2 victory.

“The strike zone was really big, and I knew the pitch would be called a strike, so I thought, I’ve got to get it down,” Parrish said about the bunt that opened the bottom of the ninth, remembering the end of the play as well. “I went down. I didn’t know where I was for a second.”

It was a hard-luck loss for Hammock, who only allowed three hits while striking out ten Hawk batters. Parrish scattered seven Atlee hits while fanning 11 and walking five. It was a successful baptism by fire for the freshman.

“It was nerve-wracking coming in, but once I got into a few innings, it felt really good,” Parrish noted.

At the same time at Mechanicsville High School, Patrick Henry (1-1) took the

Walker, blew away the field by five strokes with a 4-under 66.

The runner-up, Midlothian’s Esther Choi, finished 1-over at 71.

“It was the chorus. It wasn’t horrible but you know it played kind of like [Pete Dye River Course at the Class 4 championships] played – a little longer than what they used to play,” said King William coach Jay Blanton. “As a coach and you go and you just are hoping that they don’t get into a tough spell and kind of blow up, you know, and that they just kind of play their game and do the best that they can do. I felt that both of them did that.”

Both Kyla Blanton and Mechanicsville’s Madison Lehr struggled with a bit of nerves.

Trice gets off to hot start in freshman season

runs and 46 runs scored. “I love seeing him doing what he’s doing right now. I had no idea.

I knew he was a good player coming in, but I had no idea he was going to perform this well.”

Trice said he speaks weekly with brother, recapping his play in the previous series and breaking down upcoming opponents.

Finwood had recruited Trice’s older brother, Adam,

early in Finwood’s tenure with the Monarchs. Adam Trice ended up going to play at VMI, but leaving the team after a semester, Carter said.

That connection helped

when it came time to recruit Carter Trice. It also helped that Trice played for the same summer ball team, the Virginia Cardinals, as had former ODU star Vinnie Pasquantino.

Pasquantino’s father coached that team, and Finwood got to know the younger Trice brother early in his baseball career.

Trice committed to the Monarchs after a junior season when he hit .433 with seven home runs and 28 RBIs for LeeDavis.

Battle said Trice arrived in Norfolk unafraid to do two things — talk and work. His veteran teammates have helped keep both impulses in check.

“The first couple of weeks here I had to literally get him to slow down with how much he wanted to work,” Battle said.

“I’m like, ‘This is a long year.

You have to slow down. You have to rest your body.’”

Trice still puts in extra work with senior shortstop Tommy Bell to improve his double play pivot whenever he can, Finwood pointed out.

As for the chatter, Trice doesn’t come off as cocky or arrogant, just loud and outgoing.

“He has a quiet confidence about him,” Finwood said, before amending that statement. “When it gets more than quiet, the guys rein him in. But they know when that sucker climbs in the batter’s box, he’s all business.”

Trice says he gets that from his brother.

But Gross, who will need to be tough when she starts at The Citadel in the fall, proved she’s already got plenty of grit.

The Cavalier senior nearly tore the nail off one of her big toes the day before and had to play 18 holes in the open in quite a bit of pain.

“I wasn’t too optimistic that she was going to be able to play,” Jay Blanton said. “Then

she kind of she came in Monday morning and she was still kind of limping around, but she was like, ‘I’m going to try and start and see what I can do. And, you know, if I can only play three or four holes, I’ll do what I can. At least I can say I tried.”

By Mike Barber Richmond Times-Dispatch Carter Trice grew up with his big brother as his sporting role model.

From playing Whiffle ball with Adam to watching his older sibling develop into a star shortstop at Lee-Davis High School as a senior, Trice knew whom he wanted to emulate.

This year, Trice feels he’s been in the position to make his brother, now an Army Ranger stationed in Colorado Springs, proud. He’s doing it with a breakout freshman baseball season at Old Dominion.

“He’s always been a role model for me, not just in baseball but how hard he works,” Trice said. “It kind of pushed me to work harder in baseball and what I was passionate about.”

That passion took Trice from Lee-Davis to ODU, and after an injury to starting second baseman Chris Dengler, another freshman, Trice moved from third base to second and into the lineup.

“He hasn’t really looked back since,” ODU coach Chris Finwood said.

As of Sunday, Trice leads the team with a .359 average, the second-best mark in the league. He ranks second in the conference with a .679 slugging percentage. His 40 runs scored are tied for sixth in the league, and his 38 RBIs are eighth. His 11 home runs are tied for second in the league.

Sunday, Trice hit a walk-off home run to lead the No. 25 Monarchs to a 10-0 victory over No. 15 Charlotte. The win gave ODU a 3-1 win over Charlotte in the series. His five hits and seven RBIs against Marshall on April 4 are the most in a game by a Conference USA player this season. He’s been named

Countywide leash law continues through the year HANOVER COUNTY -Every year, beginning April 1 through June 30, it is unlawful for dogs anywhere in Hanover County to be running off their property without being leashed.

The county’s “leash law” applies throughout the year in the suburban area.

Between April 1 and June 30, it is extended to the rural areas as well because the births of vulnerable livestock, such as baby lambs and calves, tend to take place during this period.

Wildlife activity and rabies cases also generally increase in the April 1-June 30 time frame.

Any dogs caught running off their owner’s property will

be impounded.

Impoundment fees are $25 for the first violation and an additional $10 for each subsequent violation within a 12-month period including a $5 per day boarding fee.

Violations also can result in uniform summons or a written warning being issued.

Each instance of a dog belonging to a particular owner running at-large is a separate violation, and an additional penalty will apply regardless of whether or not the same dog is involved.

To be eligible for COVID19 funeral assistance, the policy states: The applicant must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or qualified alien who incurred funeral expenses after Jan. 20, 2020, for a death attributed to COVID-19.

If multiple individuals contributed toward funeral expenses, they should apply under a single application as applicant and co-applicant.

FEMA will also consider documentation from other individuals not listed as the applicant and co-applicant who may have incurred funeral expenses as part of the registration for the deceased individual.

An applicant may apply for multiple deceased individuals.

The COVID-19-related death must have occurred in the United States, including the U.S. territories and the District of Columbia.

This assistance is limited to a maximum financial amount of $9,000 per funeral and a maximum of $35,500 per application.

Funeral assistance is intended to assist with expens-

es for funeral services and interment or cremation.

The applicant responsible for COVID-19 funeral expenses will need to provide the following information below when they call FEMA to register for assistance.

Social Security number for the applicant and the deceased individual.

SHLAND -- Full and partial scholarships to purchase Carter Park Pool memberships are available for qualifying Ashland individuals and families.

The town posted the following update on March 31: The Carter Park Pool will open to the public at noon on Saturday, May 29. Sept. 6 is the closing date for the 2021 season.

During the season the most current information about the pool will be shared on the town’s social media accounts and posted at the pool.

The pool will open from 12 to 8 p.m. daily. The pool will close early for Ashland Barracudas’ swim meets (dates TBD).

As of April 1, seasonal memberships are being sold at Ashland Town Hall, and memberships also will be sold at Carter Park on select weekends before the pool season. The Carter Park Pool is an eight-lane junior Olympic-sized swimming pool (25 meters) with a separate kiddie pool for small children. The pool is open to Ashland residents and nonresidents. Annual pool memberships are available for purchase at Ashland Town Hall, or a daily, per-person entry fee can be purchased at the gate. Financial assistance for pool memberships is available for qualified applicants (must be an Ashland resident).

A new membership system using key tags instead of membership cards was implemented during the 2019 season. Memberships went on sale April 1.

CASA seeks volunteers HANOVER -- The Hanover Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program is now accepting applications for the next volunteer training scheduled to begin June 12. Training will be held weekly with two Saturday sessions. The program trains, recruits, and supervises volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children involved in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court process.

No special experience is required. Potential volunteers have extensive preparation for their role through a 40-hour training program. CASA Volunteers are appointed by the juvenile court judge and spend an average of 10 to 15 hours a month working on a case.

The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has wonderful pets available to a good home. Ricky, Animal ID# 578033, is a 2-year-old (estimated) male canine/hound. He has had his first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Ricky is a sweet hound dog that has been in the shelter for about two months now. He has a very friendly personality. Ricky was more than likely an outdoor dog before coming here, but he has adjusted well to his kennel. He gets along well with everyone he meets.

Ricky also is mild-mannered around other dogs. He will make a very nice family dog. For more information on this great pet, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Hanover County Pound Facility, call 804-365-6485 during the day. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The facility is closed on Sunday and county holidays.
