If they were respected then, more than 150 years ago, for promoting racial inequality, would they have been able to lead men to horrible deaths and would their names and lives have mattered at all?

The modern context for relevant racial equality includes Martin Luther King Jr., who championed a unity with peaceful demonstrations.

We may never know whether the initial tragic incident in Minneapolis was racially prompted, but we will know whether large segments of our society will accept peaceably the slow careful workings of our judicial system as it prosecutes the case. An educated population with confidence in a diligent impartial legal system should be everyone’s main goal, undistracted by cosmetic changes to names and statues. Lawrence J. Cogut Glen Allen

Juneteenth placement deserved better

I am a transplant to the area from out of state and since I have lived here, there has been a lot of controversy on the renaming of schools in Hanover County. While I think this it is a good thing to change the names, as an initial step toward reconciliation and it provides an excellent opportunity for dialogue, I was surprised to see coverage of the Juneteeth March and Rally relegated to page 17 in your June 24th issue.

Admittedly, there was a picture on the front page and I thank you for that, but an event of this magnitude deserved banner placement.

This event, in the context of the national conversation on race, should have been given proper placement, and begs another question, "Is there an attempt to downplay this event and ignore the 400-pound purple gorilla in the room?"

Please be responsible in not just your reporting but also the presentation of your reporting. Thank you. John J. Amoroso Mechanicsville

ASHLAND – Five 4-H members and a past leader of the Three Rivers 4-H Livestock Club were honored on Wednesday June 24, with the highest honor: 4-H All-Star. The members are Megan Gaines, Caitlyn Giese, Marley Goodman, Reagan White and Victoria Wright. Vicki Underwood, the past leader, will receive an Adult Honorary 4-H All-Star.

Membership in the Virginia 4-H All-Stars Chapter is a very distinct privilege and honor received by those who exhibit qualities of leadership, integrity, outstanding achievement, and dedication to 4-H and youth development.

To become a 4-H All-Star it takes many years of 4-H involvement and service to the community. When a candidate feels ready, they begin the process of filling out the application that reflects on their years of service. That application is then evaluated by the extension unit that nominates strong candidates for the award.

Once selected the candidates are then initiated as 4-H All-Stars at a one of a kind, secret ceremony during State 4-H Congress at Virginia Tech. Unfortunately, that was not able to occur this year due COVID-19, but in addition to the online ceremony this past week, the organization is looking for other ways to revise the tapping ceremony.

Among the accomplishments the young ladies are being recognized for are committing countless hours to 4-H projects, learning experiences, officer positions, committee positions, program planning, 4-H camps, competitive judging and showing, recruitment and promotion and community service both in and outside of 4-H.

For more information in the scholarship program (for children ages 5 to 18), contact Sharonda Lindsay, the 4-H program assistant, by email at sharondal20@vt.edu or by phone at 804-752-4310. The website is https://hanover. ext.vt.edu/programs.html.

Strolling down memory lane with the Hanover Tomato Festival

File photos

We thought it only fi tting to share photos of the Hanover Tomato Festival through the years, so we dug into our fi les to bring back memories of all the good times. In 1978, the Black Creek Volunteer Fire Department started out small, but -- and this is a good thing -- had to move twice as the festival grew. Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), this will be the fi rst year in the festival’s history that it will not be held. Hanover County Parks and Recreation now spearheads organizational efforts for the event. Don’t worry: there’s always next year. And planning has started.

station on McClellan Road.

At that time, President Larry Sutton and Chief Oscar Watson joined forces to head up the festival. Once everyone agreed to hold a festival, the next issue was: What will the theme be?

BCVFD members talked about the Camptown Races in Ashland and the Oyster Festival in Urbanna, so they knew they wanted a theme significant to Hanover County.

What was in Hanover County? Vegetables -- lots and lots of vegetables.

And what vegetable was Hanover County especially known for? The Hanover Tomato, of course.

With a theme in place, Sutton, Watson and the other VFD members organized a Fireman’s Parade, as well as contests – and that included eating tomatoes. About 300 people showed up that first year.

Local homemakers were given an opportunity to show off their skills with various dishes – and plenty of samples for attendees to taste.

Growth was fast becoming an issue, so the fes

tival moved to Battlefield Park Elementary School in 1999. Arts and crafts vendors joined too.

The popularity of the annual event continued to expand, so another move became necessary. Also needed was additional manpower to handle the ever-increasing festival. That’s when Hanover Parks and Rec stepped in to help.

In 2008, Pole Green Park opened and a new home was found. The next year, one of the largest turnouts ever – 42,000 – filled the grounds.

Sadly, two of the most important men involved with the festival have passed away. Oscar Watson died in 2012 and Robby Dodd, whose farm sup

plied the tomatoes, followed in 2017.

The Saturday morning of the festival always started with Watson heading to Dodd’s farm to get the bushels of that famous Hanover Tomato.

Don’t dismay: there’s always next year – and a reason to celebrate Hanover County’s favorite fruit.
