Bourassa and Axselle take top school board offices

By Jim Ridolphi for Ashland-Hanover Local ASHLAND -- In a unanimous vote, Hanover County School Board members tapped Mechanicsville District representative Roger Bourassa to chair the panel for the upcoming 12 months.

During its annual regular reorganization meeting, the board also selected John Axselle, Beaverdam District, to serve as vice chair for the upcoming year.

Bourassa, who was appointed to the board in 2014, has served as vice chair for the past two years.

“I want to thank my fellow board members for their support and I look forward to working with Dr. [Michael] Gill [superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools and the [Hanover County] Board of Supervisors to continue our tradition of excellence in HCPS as our residents have come to expect over the years,” Bourassa said.

He cited continuation of the technology plan and the construction of a new elementary school in Ashland as pressing issues for the upcoming year.

Outgoing chair Bob Hundley, Chickahominy District, said Bourassa’s two years as vice chair prepared

him well for the challenges he will face now that the gavel is his.

“I think Roger will do a great job,” Hundley said. “I think he has learned a lot over the last two years as vice chair and he’s ready to step into this role,” Hundley added.

Hundley wrapped up his sixth term as chair since he began serving on the school board in 2004, and said he is sure Bourassa will continue to lead the board in its quest for equity and excellence.

Hundley noted that this board is seeing the fruit of its labors as programs like the Advanced College Academy mature.

“With respect to the accomplishments I would point to, the graduation of our first ACA class from Reynolds Community College,” Hundley said. “I checked the numbers; we had 39 earn associate degrees in May. Subsequent years will be closer to 50 students, but, since these students started as sophomores, their cohort was smaller.”

He pointed to other accomplishments.

“I think the other efforts I’d like to highlight include the work Jennifer Greif led on our Mental Health Initiatives Task Force (which may be the first of its kind in the country),

Davis High School corner will require some adjustments and a redefinition of the school’s bus loop. The county asked the board for easement conveyances and rights-of-way to accommodate sidewalks, utilities, and construction.

Joe Vidunas, transportation engineer for Hanover County Public Works, said the county is obtaining right-of-way from about 60 properties affected by the construction.

One of the current entrances to the bus lane would close under the new configuration, and buses will loop in and out through one common entrance on Lee-Davis Road.

The crosswalk adjacent to Calabash will remain, but the crossing located south of that location will be closed.

While students have become accustomed to the southern crossing, some motorists have not and there have been safety issues at the location.

The crosswalk at LeeDavis Road and U.S. 360 will be upgraded but still presents challenges for students wishing to cross. “They have to cross 11 lanes of traffic,” Vidunas said.

What do you call something with two fiery eyes and a set of wings? Vacation!

T

urns out those free oil changes for life can be more enlightening than you expected. While awaiting service at a local dealership, I found a small table and pulled out my laptop and quietly began working on an article for the upcoming week’s newspaper.

A gentleman about my age asked how to access the wifi and I explained it would appear when he booted his computer and all he had to do was click “yes”.

That started a conversation that I at first thought would be brief, but it turned out the stranger was a retired journalist who was on summer vacation with his wife when their car required service.

The couple was from Charleston, South Carolina, and were heading to West Virginia for a week-long stay.

“Where you headed to in West Virginia?” I politely asked.

“We’re headed to Point Pleasant to search for the Mothman,” the man laughed.

I suppose he didn’t realize he

was speaking to a dedicated devotee of a legend that has intrigued folks for decades, and he seemed surprised that I knew of what he was speaking.

Their interests were spiked when they saw a movie called “Mothman Prophecies” starring Richard Gere and Laura Linney, and thought a visit to the small hamlet would make an interesting and unique vacation.

I explained that I had never been to Point Pleasant but was well acquainted with the Mothman legacy, and how the terror associated with it had gripped a community in the late 1960s.

In 1966, a series of troubling reports and sightings of a strange moth/man combination stalking the community became prevalent in and around Point Pleasant.

Locals who had encountered the beast described it as about 6 to 7 feet tall with folded wings and red eyes.

The origins of the phenomenon are still to this day unknown, but the legend has grown as the decades pass, and Point Pleasant has become the centerpiece of a universal effort to keep the story alive.

Why Point Pleasant? No one knows exactly, but the town is located adjacent to a closed munitions factory that produced God only knows what during World War II. I had a neighbor who worked at the top secret site during those years, and, although he never discussed his confidential work, he did tell me about the strange occurrences that surrounded the deserted site.

Locals call it the “TNT” area and during the period in question, the area was a hotspot for young lovers seeking privacy so they could engage in what we used to call submarine races.

“There were some strange things going on at that site,” my neighbor said, describing the beastly encounters, not the backseat activities.

The Mothman hysteria culminated in November 1967 when the Silver Bridge spanning the Ohio River collapsed on a cold November evening, claiming 46 lives.

Following the disaster, some people who survived recalled the terrifying site of two red eyes sitting atop the bridge’s tower shortly before the collapse, and to this day, many believe the collapse was a

result of the Mothman’s wrath.

Engineers who studied the collapse begged to differ and cited deficient steel in one of the beams supporting the suspension bridge.

But, as my neighbor said, Mothman was never seen or heard from again in Point Pleasant.

Today, Point Pleasant appears just like any other quiet riverfront town on the Ohio, the Silver Bridge long replaced and thoughts of evil creatures remaining only in the minds of those the locals call believers.

But, the town has taken full advantage of the mystery, and whether it was a winged intruder, aliens or some genetically-altered being created from the ashes of that weapons plant, the events have marked Point Pleasant as the place to begin the search for Mothman.

There are museums,a local festival, moth man themed promotions, and you can even buy a local pizza designed in the image of — you guessed it — Mothman.

Marla Coleman ‘disappointed’ in HCBOS action I was not reappointed to the Hanover County School Board for a second term. As you can imagine, there are lots of questions regarding my reaction to being denied reappointment.

I certainly can confirm that I am disappointed. I was encouraged by several Hanover County leaders not to pursue reappointment, but I have too much respect for the importance of the position to believe that the best strategy for me is to avoid the unpleasantness.

As a reality, however, my term will shortly end (the letter was submitted on Friday, June 28) and the position will soon be held by the new appointee (effective July 1).

I am very pleased that I had this opportunity to serve our schools, families, and youth.

Serving on a school board is a very special honor that demands the best effort from the board member. It is certainly a challenging assignment and not to be taken lightly.

I was fortunate to serve with a great educational team under Dr. Michael Gill and to work with fellow Hanover County School Board members to provide important, visionary leadership to Hanover County Public Schools.

I have been inspired by our amazing, creative educators and support personnel. And, without a doubt, our students remain our daily, joyful focus.

One of the most memorable days in the past years was the day I shadowed a high school student as she moved through her very challenging day.

I know from experience just how important putting boots on the ground can be for a member of a school board.

Even though I have a lifetime in education, each and every day was new and informative. I was always more than willing to study the issues, respond to each, and make informed decisions on these issues. It has been an see LETTERS, pg. 12

GRAL rivals turn up heat in Carter Park

By Rob Witham for Ashland-Hanover Local ASHLAND – With two rivals meeting at the newly renovated Carter Park Pool in Ashland, and temperatures in the 90s, it promised to be a night of heated Greater Richmond Aquatic League action last on July 2.

With each team sporting one of the best swimmers in their age group in the region, it would be the Ashland Barracudas holding off the Hanover Shark Attack, taking a 1,104-1,032 victory. The novice division proved crucial for the Barracudas, holding a 635-486 advantage there.

For Hanover head coach Leslie Nuckols, it was a meet affected by the holiday calendar, as nearly 20 percent of her roster missed the meet due to vacations and the like. Still, with only two meets left on the regular season schedule, there was much to build on as GRAL Champs quickly approaches later this month.

“If a kid is advanced, one step away from JV, I always put the advanced kid in their advanced event to try to get them a shot at making Champs,” Nuckols explained.

“Other than that, I try to study where their kids are, and where my kids are, and try to plan it to maximize our points.”

For Nuckols, watching and working with Hollender is an absolute joy, in part due to a competitor’s mentality at work that is hardly seen in many 18 year olds, much less an 8 year old.

“He just wants to race. He’s at the point where he asks do I have to do 25’s?,” Nuckols explained. “For NoVA, he swims in 200-meter events. He’s so used to competing against 10 year olds and makes finals in big meets as an 8 year old in 10-and-under events. He’s a super, super special swimmer.”

Medei took .04 off her best time winning the 11-12 girls 50-meter freestyle in 30.40, while Greene shaved .24 off his best in the 13-14 boys 50 freestyle, breaking the 29-second barrier at 28.94. A 28.40 time would qualify Greene for the highest level at Champs, senior varsity.

Defense trips up Post 175 in loss to Post 125

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – The field may have been dry, but the play was sloppy when Lakeside Post 125 traveled to Hanover High School for an American Legion baseball contest with host Mechanicsville Post 175 Tuesday night.

The linescore says it all: nine errors.

Unfortunately for Post 175, six of those were committed

by Post 175, and Lakeside took advantage of the extra outs, racking up 16 hits in a 14-2 rout of the hosts.

While Mechanicsville has yet to field a stable lineup – and injuries and illnesses are now having an effect – the performance was disappointing to players and coaches alike.

“We just played poorly tonight,” said Post 175 manager Ken Schrad. “Kids are playing in positions that they’re probably normally not used to playing, but it doesn’t make any difference. They’ve all played baseball. They need to make plays.

“I mean, I told them I was a little disappointed. This is the first time, I think, they kind of lost their moxie.”

Up to that point, Post 175 had recorded just one error, which led to one unearned run in the first inning. But Mechanicsville opened the fourth inning with an error, which allowed Post 125’s Alex Erickson to reach base. Erickson moved to second on a David Snead single, then he and Snead both scored on an error in the outfield following a Patrick White single for two unearned runs.

One out later, Vic Johnson walked. After another out, Bo Richmond singled, but an error on the play allowed Wright to score for another unearned run and a 6-2 lead.

Brannon Mantlo took over pitching duties for Post 175 in the fifth inning, and the team yielded one more unearned run in that inning.

After that inning, Lakeside’s bats took over as Post 125 scored four runs in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh.

With just one win so far this season, Schrad said Post 175 is going through a difficult adjustment after several years of dominance in District 11.

“Post 175, they come out here. They’re a little bit cocky, you know. They’re expected to win and stuff,” Schrad said.

“We’re on that teetering point right now, where we better catch ourselves from this freefall that we seem to be in right now.

Take the Fourth of July break and come back and let’s just start it fresh and new and see what happens.”

Datovech was one of 13 triple winners for the Barracudas, while Paul Datovech, Ronny Maier and Ethan Spencer each notched four meet victories.

After taking the 13-14 girls 50-meter breaststroke in 40.22, a full second better than her seed time, Datovech analyzed her work.

“I’m trying really hard right now. I thought, it’s the 50 breaststroke, it’s my off race, so I’m just going to go and get a senior varsity cut.”

Datovech did so, with ninetenths of a second to spare. She also improved her time in the 100 butterfly, knocking .31 off to finish in 1:07.81.

“I really enjoy the synchronization of the butterfly, and

the quick burst of adrenaline that comes with the 50 freestyle,” Datovech noted when asked why they were her favorite events. She has been with the Barracudas since age 5.

Other notable wins included Cole Nuckols of Hanover winning the 13-14 boys 100 butterfly in 1:12.16, just .01 shy of reaching senior varsity status; the Shark Attack’s Melanie McAdoo knocking 1.16 seconds off her personal best winning the 15-18 girls 100 butterfly in 1:15.13; and Thomas Senfield of Ashland taking more than 7 seconds off his best time in the 11-12 boys 100 individual medley to win in 1:21.97, just 1.64 seconds shy of senior varsity status.

My comments here reflect, I hope, my sincerest and deepest affection for our schools and those who lead and teach. It has truly been one of the best experiences I could imagine.

I will take with me wonderful memories of the great educators who work here in Hanover and the inspiring students who learn here. It was a rare opportunity, a lot of fun, and a ton of work.

Broadband Task Force brings officials to table I was invited by U.S. Rep. Rob Wittman’s office to attend the third in a series of meetings of what he’s calling his “Broadband Task Force” on June 24. This meeting occurred at the Beale Annex Building in Tappahannock.

I’d like to share with your readers what was discussed and how we can move Hanover County toward expanding access to this vital utility.

The purpose of this meeting of the Task Force was to have representatives from both the state and federal government explain the process for accessing funds that have been appropriated in their budgets for the next couple of years to expand broadband internet access to rural communities. Representatives from a few local governments and private internet service providers also were in attendance.

Most of the people who encountered the other worldly beast are dead and buried, and many others have long discounted the story behind the legend.

I told the stranger at the auto dealer little of this background and explained that I had a limited knowledge of the enhanced tale, but

We join other localities in Congressman Wittman’s district that have a large rural population – places like Caroline County, the Northern Neck, etc. – and I appreciate him working on this issue because it affects so much of our daily lives.

Some of the attendees told stories of their school-aged children having to drive 20 to 30 minutes, each way, to find a location that had the internet access speed to accommodate the homework they were working on. They usually found it at a fast food restaurant or coffee shop.

Access to high speed internet is crucial for the future of any community and Hanover is no different. We need to take the necessary steps to start applying for the funds that the state and federal government is making available.

Locally, Powhatan County has submitted an application to be considered with others from around the country for the federal grant funds, New Kent County has approved funds to perform a study to expand access, and King William County is working on their initiative with Del. Chris Peace and the state’s broadband officer.

It’s past time for Hanover County to address this critical issue.

Tomato Festival kicks off Friday MECHANICSVILLE -- As the calendar turns past the Independence Day holiday, the Hanover Tomato Festival will fill the second weekend of July for Hanoverians again this year. Pole Green Park at 8996 Pole Green Park Lane in Mechanicsville will be filled with artisan and local business vendors, delicious food vendors, Hanover Tomato tomatoes, children’s activities, regional sounds and friends and families celebrating Hanover’s famous fruit.

The Hanover Tomato Festival will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 12, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 13.

Hanover Tomatoes bring us together, so be sure to stop by the festival tent, near the tram stops, to get a tasting of Hanover Tomatoes or a bag to take home. As always, the tomatoes at the festival are delivered directly to the event from Hanover farmers.

This year’s tomatoes are from Rosa’s Garden (Mechanicville) and Hanover Vegetable Farm (Ashland).

If you prefer your tomatoes as part of your meal, check out the food vendors serving delicious tomato cuisine like fried green tomatoes, caprese salad, tomato burger, BLTs, tomato pies and so much more.

For those who are more creative, the vendors are encouraged to participate in the Most Spirited Vendor competition.

tions by coming and staying well-hydrated with water and sun-safe with sunscreen, hats and light-colored clothing.

The event offers cool misting stations and first aid stations throughout the event field.
