Beaverdam American Legion Post 90 recently presented an American Flag to Beaverdam Elementary School. The flag was presented to Chip Joseph, principal, at the school assembly. The Flag replaced the worn and tattered flag at the school. The old Flag will be retired at the Flag Ceremony at the Post in the fall. Presenting the Flag was Post Vice Commander Mike Byorick; Auxiliary President Cindy Hall and Legion Rider Marian English. Doswell man loses life in single-vehicle crash Staff Report news@mechlocal.com HANOVER – A 51-year-old Doswell man was killed Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Horseshoe Bridge Road.

Sgt. James R. Cooper, public information for the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office, identified the victim as Thomas

W. Seay.

According to Cooper, Seay was pronounced dead at the scene.

Seay was driving a 2003 GMC van that was traveling south in the 15000 block of Horseshoe Bridge Road when it went off the road and struck a tree.

Deputies responded to the scene around 11:56 a.m.

“Investigators are still collecting information to determine the circumstances that led to this tragic incident,�

Cooper said.

Speaking on behalf of Col. David R. Hines, sheriff, Cooper said, “We extend our sincerest condolences to the family of Thomas Seay during this difficult time.�

SHLAND – Mark Maphis of Fin & Feather Pet Center of Ashland said he wants to see more pets adopted into forever homes. He also said that he believes there is an untapped opportunity to increase these numbers through the Ashland Strawberry Faire.

This is the second year that Fin & Feather Pet Center of Ashland has sponsored a centralized “BARKing Lot.” The BARKing Lot will be located under the shade trees on East Patrick Street. There will be lots of water available for all of the furry guests!

Several groups have registered to participate at the BARKing Lot, including the Hanover Humane Society, Lab Rescue of Greater Richmond, Operation Paws for Homes, and Richmond Ruff House.

Vice President Bob Flanagan said the Faire has been part of Ashland since 1982. As a nonprofit, he said the ASF has faced challenges – but now it is “stronger than ever.”

That strength, he said, “translates greatly to good things for our community.”

With pride, Flanagan noted that the Faire has given more than $85,000 in grant scholarships to nonprofits. He said the event is “successful -- rain or shine.”

Food vendors are required to sponsor a nonprofit, but those funds do not become part of the running total. That means there are more monies going back to community.

Flanagan said the financial support to local nonprofits was one of the main reasons that the Faire was started. He also said the “strong support from business partners and sponsor vendors pay the booth fees. It would be very expensive to run

Each performance runs about 45 minutes.

While free, and open to the public, the Foundation welcomes donations.

Tickets will be distributed on the date of the show on a first-come, first-served basis.

The number of tickets distributed will be limited to the legal capacity of the courthouse. Patrons are asked to not save seats in the courtroom.

here was much excitement over last month’s release of the first images of the black hole at the core of the giant elliptical galaxy M87.

There was also a fair bit of misinformation. This was not a photograph as some media portrayed it, rather is was an image produced with a host of computer processing from radio telescope data. And it was not an image of the black hole itself, rather its “shadow.�

I’ll have more to say about this next month.

In the March column, I promised to discuss an interesting report in Scientific American about what seemed to be observational confirmation of a model that white dwarf stars essentially “crystallize� as they cool.

Unfortunately, I conflated two items. The Scientific American article was about crystallization in neutron stars, not white dwarfs! The white dwarf article was in Physics Today.

A white dwarf is what the

Sun will become after the next 5 billion years have passed. It’s the fate of all stars less massive than the Sun, and perhaps a few times more massive. First the hydrogen at the core will be fully fused into helium (that’s what powers the solar luminosity), and the star will evolve into a red giant. Once that core is massive enough it will fuse helium into carbon and oxygen. For these low and intermediate mass stars, carbon and oxygen are the end of the line for fusion and energy release, but the core itself is in a state called electron degeneracy. This is a quantum mechanical effect, but in simplest terms it means that the electrons cannot be squeezed any closer together. This creates a pressure that is completely independent of temperature, and it keeps the core from collapsing even when there is no longer any fusion taking place.

Meanwhile the outer layers of the star are becoming unstable to radial pulsation, and the envelope is eventually ejected into space, forming what is called a planetary nebula. The hot core is the white dwarf – up to 1.4 times the mass of the Sun in a dense sphere roughly the size of the Earth, with a density a billion times that of water. Because of their small surface area, white dwarfs have very small luminosities and take a very long time to cool.

dicted that as a white dwarf cools the carbon and oxygen nuclei would segregate, with the more massive oxygen settling toward the center leaving the carbon nuclei in the outer radii. Additionally, even at a temperature of several million kelvin, electrostatic interactions between the nuclei would freeze them into a lattice. This crystallization is what is known as a first order phase transition and, just as water gives off latent heat when it freezes, the transition to a lattice in the white dwarf gives off latent heat which appears as a slight increase in luminosity.

Statistically, this should show up as an increased population of white dwarfs at the expected luminosity range for crystallization to occur.

Using data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia satellite, researchers at the University of Warwick and the University of Montreal searched for this population in a sample of 15,000 accurately measured white dwarfs. Earlier data sets were too small for the statistical pileup to stand out, with only about 200 examples known with precise distances determined. The Gaia data set improved not only on precisely measured distances but in sheer numbers, making the statistical analysis possible.

Mom should be treated special every day

T

o say her youngest daughter posed challenges in parenting is an understatement.

She was carefree and lived life to the fullest, with the exception of taking education and planning for the future very seriously.

The eldest daughter was the epitome of the perfect child: a straight A student and an officer or member of all the right clubs and organizations. She had a love of music that prompted her to take piano lessons.

Daughter #2 had been registered to study the guitar and learn to twirl the baton. She didn’t do either, preferring to hang out with the kids in the neighborhood. Who was thinking past that particular day? You’re correct-- she wasn’t.

And then there was the mother. She was patient and giving. But she was a disciplinarian. I can still hear her say, “Go get a switch.” We lived in a community known as Hedgeview due to the well-manicured hedges. The downside was that

said hedges provided a tool for punishment.

She had been raised rather sheltered due to the “war years,” as she still calls them. She was a preteen when World War II broke out. Her father was a boss in the coal mines so they lived comfortably.

She was trusting of her daughters. My sister once told me that it wasn’t that she was such a goody-goody -- she just knew how not to get caught. At that time, I was probably more impressed by her behavior than all the awards and accolades she received when she graduated from high school.

The patience level with me was tested when my sister left for Virginia Tech when she was 16.

Even I didn’t think I’d get into a lifetime career -- and I didn’t have a particular plan when I got my high school diploma.

Full-time employment changed my life, as well as that of my parents. They always knew my sister would succeed -- she had a plan at the age of 9.

Mom and I became roommates in 2009 when

she relocated to the Richmond area as my sister’s health declined. The years we had with her by moving here are treasured.

Now and again, we may experience a hiccup as we were both settled into different routines after having our own homes for several years.

But, without a doubt, I am blessed to have Mom here. At 88, she is healthy and still active.

This is home to both of us.

On Sunday, I’m taking her to the restaurant that we last celebrated Mother’s Day with my sister in 2010. It will be emotional, but she’s always with us in our hearts and memories.

While one day out of the year is designated for moms, we should do everything we can daily to thank her for her sacrifices and remind her how much we love her. I know that’s my plan for Sunday.

Our relationship has had a few ups and downs through the years, but the love we share has never been questioned.

I am so blessed that she is here with me.

I love you, Mom! Happy Mother’s Day!

It’s one of the few things that has remained constant through decades of life, a small part of the past that seemed to be valued by generations far removed in an era where radio was king and

Patrick Henry ends Hawks’ unbeaten run

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Hanover’s softball team went into its Friday night contest with visiting Patrick Henry undefeated. But the Patriots did not come to town overawed.

Like a boxing match in which neither fighter scores a knockout blow through 15 rounds, the two teams slugged it out over seven regulation innings. While Patrick Henry held a 2-1 lead through much of the game, neither team could land a game-ending blow.

When Hanover tied the game with Jenna Currie’s home run in the seventh inning, it looked like the Hawks might have momentum going into the extra eighth. But the Patriots proved they were up to the challenge, outlasting the Hawks in a five-run eruption that ended in Patrick Henry’s ultimate 5-4 victory.

Patriot pitcher Riley Dull was key to Patrick Henry’s final stand in the eighth inning.

After the Patriots had scored three runs to go up 5-2 in the top of the inning, the Patriots gave up a pair of runs, one earned on Leslie Currie’s line drive deep into the Patrick Henry outfield, the other on an errant throw in to third that sailed out of play.

Next door on the baseball diamond, Hanover took an early lead, but the Hawks found the Patriots too pesky to go away quietly. Nevertheless, the Hawks held on for a 6-3 win.

Hanover set the tone early with a two-run home run by Blake Doggett to put them ahead 2-0 in the first inning.

The Hawks extended the lead to 4-0 in the third before the Patriots got some offense going in the sixth.

“It was a good test tonight,” said Hanover head coach Tyler Kane. “In order to contest for anything at the end of the season you have to be able to win close games.”

Hanover was led by Blake Doggett and Colby Hutnan,

who both went 2-of-3 with two RBI. Doggett belted a two-run home run in the first inning and scored twice. Hutnan tripled and scored once.

Randolph-Macon women’s lacrosse advances to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship game, only to find conference juggernaut Washington and Lee standing in the way.

Sunday in Lexington, the Generals, the No. 1 team in Division III, tallied 11 goals in the first half thanks to dominant draw control play to win their 10th ODAC title in a row with a 17-7 victory over the Yellow Jackets.

While the Generals are the only program to win ODAC women’s lacrosse championships – all 10 of them – in this decade, it was RandolphMacon’s fifth consecutive trip to, and defeat in, the championship round for head coach M.K. Geratowski and the Yellow Jackets. “[The Generals] were such a force in draw control today,” noted Geratowski, referencing nine won by Rebecca Wellford and four by Caitlin Anderson.

Washington & Lee won 11 of 14 in the first half, and 18 of 25 for the match. The Generals also scored on five of six free positions in the first half while building the lead.

But the weekend in Lexington had its high moments, too. In Saturday’s semifinal with No. 3 Roanoke, the Yellow Jackets were down by as many as three in the second half. The Maroons scored with 5:50 remaining to take a 12-10 lead.

But sophomore Bella Samper scored unassisted just 15 seconds later, then – after Roanoke missed on four separate free position attempts – Saunders Riley, owner of the

Hannah Jones, the team’s leading scorer, won the next draw control, and, with 21 seconds left, would accept a pass from Samper and find the back of the net to complete another heart-stopping comeback for a 13-12 victory.

“It was so impressive to watch. They knew exactly what they needed to do for that goal, went out, and executed the play,” Geratowski said. “Our biggest improvement this season has been on offense. We have so many attackers, so many midfielders, who are threats.”

Cerrina from the left side with just 45 seconds left in regulation, and, in overtime, defenseman Sam Balch fired a shot from 30 yards out that snuck past Cerrina, sending the Maroons to the semifinals with a 9-8 sudden-victory decision over the Yellow Jackets, who collapsed onto the Day Field turf, stunned at the final twist of what has been an historic season.

The teams traded goals early, then Peter Lindley, the ODAC’s leading goal scorer in the regular season (59), who missed the regular season match against Randolph-Macon 10 days earlier, tallied the first of his three goals on the night for a 2-1 Roanoke lead after a period.

A fluke goal for defenseman Merrick Wood kept Roanoke from building a bigger lead late in the second period. Wood passed the ball well over the head of a teammate, sending the ball down the middle of the field. Roanoke goalkeeper Ian Davies was nowhere near the circle. By the time Lindley realized the loose ball was headed for the net, his diving save

attempt failed, as Wood cut the deficit to 3-2. Lintner scored again 43 seconds later to make the Maroons lead 4-2 at intermission.

Randolph-Macon (13-5) dominated the midway stretch of what was up to that point a scoreless third period, scoring three times in 3:15 to take their first lead as Derek Marsilio fed Brendan Markovic twice for goals, and Colin DiSesa (Hanover) scored on a man advantage. Roanoke scored late to send the teams to the fourth squared at 5-5.

Three times the Yellow Jackets would take a one-goal lead, and, three times Roanoke would answer, the final goal in the final minute of regulation to force the overtime. Roanoke won the overtime faceoff, but a Lindley shot was denied by Cerrina.

Randolph-Macon, plagued by turnovers during the match, committed one final, fatal error deep in their offensive zone, beginning a fast break which sent the ball into the long stick of Balch, who wound and fired, getting the ball to the right bot-

tom corner. Seeing the ball go by, Cerrina collapsed to the turf as the Maroons exploded in celebration.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for a team that shattered the program’s record for wins in a single season, once at 10, now at 13. To be so close to reaching the semifinal round for the first time since 2013, hosting an ODAC quarterfinal for the first time since 2012 – the first time ever at the current Day Field complex – the disappointment cut through the night air like a knife.

Baseball advances ASHLAND – The top-seeded Yellow Jacket baseball team easily handled No. 8 Eastern Mennonite in a doubleheader Tuesday, winning both ends by large margins, 13-1 and 11-1, to earn the right to advance to the ODAC tournament.

Randolph-Macon’s next game is against fourth seed Virginia Wesleyan on May 10 at 4 p.m. at Salem Memorial Ballpark.

They will travel to The College of New Jersey in Ewing, New Jersey, to face Arcadia (3112) in the first round of the tournament on May 10 at a time determined after this edition went to press.

After the Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, a trio of walks and an error allowed the Marlins to score six runs in the bottom of the second. Randolph-Macon never recovered.

Savannah Wood led the Yellow Jackets, going 3-of-3 with an RBI. Candace Whittemore was 2-of-3 with an RBI, and Kersin Roth went 2-of-3 with a run scored.

Roth, Whittemore, Wood and Taylor Sanderford earned All-Tournament honors. The foursome, along with Brittany LaPrade, Maddie Stone and Sami Davidson earned AllODAC honors as well.

But, it’s that very LDC that has been embroiled in controversy for the past week, beginning with a meeting the previous Saturday that ended abruptly when Miller adjourned the meeting and left the room.

At a meeting later that week, two members representing a majority on the committee voted to cancel the convention and opted to hold a Firehouse Primary on June 1.

Miller and Wyatt supporters did not accept that action, and maintained the motion and vote were out of order since he had already adjourned the meeting.

But, the Republican Party of Virginia saw the issue differently and issued a statement saying the convention was cancelled and the call removed from their website.

Saturday’s event was the culmination of a week of confusion and conflict with both campaigns sniping at each other via social media, and several high profile politicians becoming involved in the fray.

Sen. Tommy Norment, R-3, who is reportedly paying for the convention, issued a statement encouraging delegates to attend the convention and defended its legitimacy despite his preferred method to nominate, a primary.

“I have always preferred, whenever practical, that primaries be chosen as the method of nomination for our party,” Norment said.

“But in this case, on Jan. 19, the 97th House Legislative District Committee selected a convention to be held on May 4 and approved a Call. Their decision was consistent with the Party Plan and with various court rulings regarding the conduct of party nominations in the Commonwealth,” the majority leader continued.

Norment said the proper avenues of appeal were available to both campaigns, and, to his knowledge, no legal challenges have been filed.

He also took issue with Wilson’s position viewing it as an over-reach.

“In issuing a statement asserting that tomorrow’s convention is anything but a duly-called con-

vention, Chairman Wilson has overstepped his authority and usurped the powers reserved for the State Central Committee.”

Norment, who did not attend the convention due to a previous family commitment voiced his support for the convention to go forward as planned.

“This convention is taking place because it must. Not holding it would be breaking faith and dismissing the verdict of those who attended the Mass Meetings so their voices could be heard,” Norment said.

Miller said he plans to issue the results of Saturday’s vote to the Virginia Board of Elections on Monday, May 6, and indicated any action that followed is anybody’s guess.

Incumbent Del. Chris Peace urged his supporters and delegates not to show up at the convention and that message was well received. A quick scan of the gymnasium at Atlee revealed a sea of Scott Wyatt signs, but not a sign of a Peace placard.

Peace vowed earlier last week to abide by the ruling of the 97th LDC on Wednesday canceling Saturday’s event.

Vendor registration open for Hanover Tomato Festival MECHANICSVILLE -Vendor spaces are still available for The Hanover Tomato Festival.

Members of the festival committee, working with Hanover County Parks and Recreation, are searching for local vendors who make or sell unique tomatorelated products, community based businesses and organizations to be part of Hanover County’s signature

event.

The Hanover Tomato Festival will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 12, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 13, at Pole Green Park at 8996 Pole Green Park Lane in Mechanicsville.

Over 150 other exhibitors take part in what is considered “the” summer event in Mechanicsville.

Attendance averages more than 30,000, but as many as 42,000

have made their way to the festival, which started in 1978 as a fundraiser for the Black Creek Volunteer Fire Department.

Vendors are encouraged to use their creativity and show their tomato spirit with booth decorations. Those vendors selected as “Most Spirited” will win a vendor space for the 2020 festival.

Some have argued that history must be cleansed and clarified for the record, and acts of racism, past and present, must be revealed and revoked.

I also hear the arguments from those who oppose the glorification of figures in our history who represented oppression and enslavement to their communities.

There are reasonable and viable objections to dignifying abhorrent acts or recognizing people who supported or endorsed those violations, but, for the life of me, I can’t see how Smith fits that description.

I’m also not naïve enough to believe Smith didn’t suffer from the same affliction that

permeated a culture in her era, and I’m sure she held a view that today is considered clearly racist -- just like almost everyone in the South during that era.

For years, we hardly batted an eye when Virginia proudly displayed its state song, “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny” before it was packed up and put away.

I understand the need to discuss difficult subjects and acknowledge past indiscretions and injustices, but I view history as an opportunity to learn, not an exercise to rectify or revise.

As for the Flyers and Kate Smith’s statue, I’m not sure political correctness hasn’t taken a step too far.

Those actions, misguided for sure, led the Flyers to first cover and then remove her statue, and the Yankees followed suit by not playing her song during the stretch.

Kate Smith was born in another generation. I don’t offer that as an excuse, but more of an explanation of how America has changed. I searched for some evidence in her life that would display a hatred for other races or bigotry but found none.
