County Cannery to open July 2 ASHLAND –0 July signifies the opening of canning season.

Canning, the old practice of preserving fruits and vegetables has traditionally been done in the home.

Hanover County has a Cannery that also operates as a commercial kitchen where residents, non-residents and commercial customers may process their produce on commercial-grade equipment including large kettles.

The Hanover County Cannery will open on Monday, July 2. It will be open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays in July and August.

The Cannery will be open on Saturdays in September and October.

On Mondays during these months, processing can take place between 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. (the Cannery closes at 10:30 p.m. on Mondays). On the other days of the week, processing can take place between 9 and 10:30 a.m., with the Cannery closing

Jam’n Jam Summer Day Camp set ASHLAND -- Jam'n Jam is a two-day summer day camp on July 18 and 19. Camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

During the first day, campers will visit Agriberry berry farm to see the farm in production and pick their own berries. The second day will consist of making jam and ice cream sauce at Hillcrest Baptist Church using the berries they picked the previous day. Participants will need to pack a lunch on both days.

Jam'n Jam is $5 a camper. Register by calling the Hanover Extension Office at 804-752-4310.

The camp’s first day will be at Agriberry farm at 6289 River Rd. in Hanover. The second day will meet at the Hillcrest Baptist Church at 11342

SYLVESTER “AUNT VEST” DABNEY Sylvester “Aunt Vest” Dabney, 92, of Beaverdam, entered eternal rest on Thursday, June 7, 2018, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond. She was born on September 28, 1925, to the late John T. Anderson and Pearl Smith Anderson of Coatesville.

She was educated at Jenny Nelson School in Coatesville. She DABNEY accepted Christ at an early age. She was preceded in death by her parents, eight of her siblings, and two of her sons, Warren J. Dabney and Hazel E. Dabney.

Mrs. Dabney was a longtime member of St. James Baptist Church where she had served as an usher and a choir member. She loved the Lord and enjoyed singing in the church choir; her signature songs were “Walk in Jerusalem Just Like John” and “On the Battlefield for the Lord”. Whenever there was something going on at her church (or any other church in the community), she tried to be there, even if she had to catch a ride. She loved to get dressed up, wear her jewelry and her beloved hats. Mrs. Dabney absolutely loved people. She would never miss the opportunity to endearingly tell you “I love you.” She treated every young person as her own child. She took in many who did not have a place to go. She was the neighborhood barber and beautician, as well as driving instructor (even when she did not

More recently, due to illness, she moved to the Ashland Convalescent Center. An instant friendship was formed between her and her roommate (Ms. Joyce). As evidence of her loving and caring nature, she felt it her responsibility to care for her roommate although she was there to be cared for herself. Sylvester worked for many years as a domestic engineer. She also was employed for quite some time at Kings Dominion in Doswell. Mrs. Dabney leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband of 73 years, David E. Dabney; three daughters, Regina M. Bray (Reverend Karl), Linda I. Ruffin and Marie V. Iverson; five sons, David L. Dabney (Patricia), Clyde C. Dabney (Alice), James R. Dabney (Peggy), Allen D. Dabney (Tara) and Craig A. Dabney; two daughter in-laws Betty Ann Dabney and Gloria T. Dabney; 30 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; innumerable greatgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Reverend Iola Smith; one brother-in-law, Deacon Spencer Curtis; a host of nieces, nephews, other family, friends and loved ones (many who loved and cared for her as “Mom”).

Marion S. Johnson, 91, longtime resident of Elmont, died peacefully on June 6, 2018, at the home of her granddaugh-

ter. Born in Bernardsville, New Jersey, Mrs. Johnson was the daughter of the late Samuel Saebic and Annie Saebic Hummer, and was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph M. Johnson. Following her 1948 graduation from St. Luke's School of Nursing, New York City, she served in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps Program at McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, where she met her future husband. She retired from Richmond Memorial HosJOHNSON pital as a nursing supervisor following a long and rewarding career.

A year later, she returned to work parttime as a cashier for Ukrop's, an activity she enjoyed. She is survived by her sister, Pauline S. Condit of Dallas, Texas; her three children, Mary Ann Clark (David) of Keswick, Timothy Johnson (Rhonda) of Aylett and Elizabeth Holloway (BJ) of Glen Allen; two grandchildren, Crystal Rodriguez-Holloway (Jose) and Jason Holloway of Glen Allen; great-granddaughter, Cassandra Rodriguez-Holloway; and a number of nieces and nephews. A service of remembrance was held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 15, 2018, at Nelsen Funeral Home & Crematory-Reid Chapel at 412 South Washington Highway in Ashland. Attendance Zone change considered for Caldwell Park development

By Jim Ridolphi for Ashland Hanover Local ASHLAND -- Hanover County School Board members are considering a change in school attendance zones for residents of a new subdivision proposed near the intersection of New Ashcake Road and U.S. 301.

Students who reside in the area of the proposed Caldwell Park subdivision attend Pearson’s Corner Elementary School, Chickahominy Middle School and Atlee High School.

Projected attendance numbers figured over a five-year period indicate the increased number of Caldwell Park students would place all three of those schools at over-capacity enrollment levels.

Based on five-year projections after build-out of the proposed development, enrollment would increase

by 143 students at Pearson’s Corner and over 70 at both Chickahominy and Atlee.

When those same numbers are run with an attendance zone change, none of the increases would result in over-capacity scenarios.

Students from Caldwell Park would attend Rural Point Elementary School, Oak Knoll Middle School and Hanover High School if the adjustment was approved.

“We took the same buildout number and compared to those schools. At the end of five years, none of those schools would be over 100 percent capacity,” Terry Stone, assistant superintendent for finance, said.

A similar approval was issued regarding students from Garrison Manor in 2015.

The school board adopted a policy change in 2015 that allows board members to

consider changing attendance zones for new developments that pose capacity problems for existing placements at Atlee High School and its feeder schools.

Stone presented the enrollment numbers for board information and discussion at the June 12 meeting, but it is unclear when the item would be placed on the panel’s action agenda.

Caldwell Park was originally proposed as a 532-unit development with 115 designated as single-family. While the single-family portion of the project has been approved, the remaining units have not.

“There is no specific timeline for any of these units at this point,” Stone told the board.

Earlier in the meeting, a parent of two Patrick Henry High School students, one of whom attended the class of a

teacher recently dismissed for inappropriate behavior with students, addressed the board and voiced serious concerns regarding the school’s current management.

Amy Brewer stood silent and deliberate after opening her remarks with a question.

“I have some questions for you,” Brewer said. “I want to know what happened.”

“I want to know how the administrative leadership in that building … that even after having one teacher arrested out of the building during the school day for sexual misconduct with a student, how could it be possible for it to happen again. But, it did,” Brewer said.

“I want to know how you all the leaders of our educational community here in Hanover County are going to handle this situation,” Brewer continued. “How are you going to alleviate an environment in

a school building that is so toxic that this could happen twice?”

Brewer suggested that officials speak to every adult “in that building to find out what went wrong.”

She said the lack of administrative oversight at the campus begins at the top.

“I want to know how you justify an administration so demonstrative of an incompetent management situation could remain in that building,” Brewer concluded.

Board members do not respond to comments received

during the public comment period.

Hanover’s Teacher of the Year is Lee-Davis High School physical education teacher and trainer Sara Salvator.

The county’s Support Employee of the Year is Chickahominy Middle nurse Shannon O’Connor.

The Beginning Teacher of the Year winner is Jeremy Smith, an English teacher at Patrick Henry High, while Battlefield Park Elementary School physical education teacher Julie Hudnall was named Innovator of the Year.

Stigma of mental illness must be erased

T

he recent suicide deaths of celebrity personalities Kate Space and Anthony Bourdain have placed a spotlight on a topic that, sadly, is far too often hidden away or discussed in hushed tones.

Mental illness is just that: an illness. A conversation last week with a physician turned to the deaths of Spade and Bourdain and the growing number of people taking their own lives in this country.

A tragic part of dealing with mental illness is the stigma still attached after years of open dialogue to the situation.

We’ve all heard the stories about hiding away loved ones who suffered from varying conditions of mental illness.

It’s heartbreaking to think about someone being locked in an attic or basement to avoid the public knowing about an all too real illness.

Whether it’s depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsion disorder (OCD) or schizophrenia, among others, it is an illness -- no different than high blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes.

There appears to be a generational stigma about openly discussing or confronting mental illness. For those who still consider it a taboo topic, shame on you.

How do those who need treatment feel comfortable to seek help if they’re being subjected to less than kind reactions?

Until you walk in someone’s shoes who is dealing with any of the issues listed, keep your judgmental opinions to yourself.

If you know someone who is battling any form of mental

illness, please offer support and compassion. Yes, some of these illnesses may be lifelong while others may be treated through counseling or medication.

My father died suddenly in July 1992 and sent my world reeling. I didn’t seek medical attention in facing the loss, because a co-worker’s father also passed away unexpectedly just weeks before mine.

We formed a bond and spent a lot of time together talking and socializing with friends. That friendship, which remains intact, helped both of us through a traumatic time.

I can’t imagine the grief the Spade and Bourdain families are experiencing. Both left young children.

My prayer is for a more sensitive society because we never know what someone is going through in life.

We aren’t the judges; we should be the support.

IHOP puts emphasis on burgers with new name: IHOb

By Jim Ridolphi for The Ashland-Hanover Local It’s a marketing tsunami that will surely be remembered as the greatest public relations gamble since Coca Cola pulled its favorite blend off the shelves three decades ago.

Last week, International House of Pancakes, better known to all of us as IHOP, will abandon that recognizable trademark after 60 years and rename the eatery IHOb. Recognizing the reality that a little suspense might add just the right amount of drama to the unveiling

of its new name, restaurant officials announced the new name would not be revealed until a week later.

And that tidbit of information sent the social media world into a frenzy trying to decipher what the “b” could possible, well, be. Investigative reporter types immediately began contacting sources to gain some insight and reveal what the inverted “P” could be hiding.

Twitter devotees expressed immediate displeasure with the name change, with one stating he would now only visit the Domestic House of Pancakes.

And then there were the barrage of suggestions on what the “b” might

As the week progressed, the fog surrounding the name change began to lift. The first hints came in the company’s announcement claiming the old standby was “flippin’ “ its name.

Days into the mystery, burgers became the front-runner. Twitter users claiming to be employees spilled the beans, saying the restaurant will unveil a new line of burgers this week … and that’s what the “b” stands for.

Assuming that’s correct, it seems

like an undignified end for the pancakes that have represented the restaurant’s staple item for decades.

The company has stressed its large selection of signature pancakes will not disappear with their billboard demotion.

But, still, IHOP becoming the International House of Burgers puzzles me. I’ve been to some countries on this planet where you can’t find a hamburger, but, pancakes — readily available.

“IHOP is changing its name to IHOB and while people think it stands for “breakfast” I’m putting my money on BETRAYAL”, one disgruntled fan wrote.

During the Coca Cola dilemma, it looked like one of the biggest mistakes in marketing history when the soft drink giant introduced a new flavored cola that left devoted fans at almost riot level.

For weeks, devotees searched for the last remaining old recipe Cokes, saving them for special occasions as sales for the new product plummeted.

After nearly two months of public outcry, the company relented and brought the old formula back to enormous demand.

So, what does the New Coke episode have to do with IHOP changing its name? Maybe, nothing, or more probably, everything.

What seemed like a Titanic disaster at the time didn’t end badly for Coca Cola. Their sales increased following the debacle of the reemergence of what was not called Coca Cola Classic, and the Atlanta-based company eventually became the world’s leading soft drink manufacturer.

Is IHOP, I mean IHOb hoping for the same results? If so, I can only offer one cautionary note. The new Coke, renamed Coke II was discontinued in 1992

one goal — a goal that you will reach very shortly. I wonder, though, if you’ve ever stopped and thought, “What now?” No, I don’t mean the more obvious responses, such as college, military, career, or even beach week. I mean the question in a much larger sense, as in: “What does it all mean?”

Robert Fulghum wrote a book of short essays entitled, All I Really Need to Know, I Learned in Kindergarten. From the title, you might surmise that he is suggesting you have wasted the last 12 years of your life, and we could have held a similar ceremony when you were only 5 or 6 years old.

Although his message transcends this notion, Fulghum does, in fact, make a compelling case. For instance, in one essay, he lists a variety of essential life skills that we learn. The first 10 go like this: 1. Share everything.

2. Play fair.

3. Don’t hit people.

4. Put things back where you found them.

5. Clean up your own mess.

6. Don’t take things that aren’t yours.

7. Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody.

8. Wash your hands before you eat.

9. Flush.

10. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.

It’s hard to argue with any of this advice. Will it be all that you need in order to be successful for the rest of your life? Probably not. I think that Fulghum’s larger point, though, is that the lessons we learned in our most formative years are applicable for a lifetime.

For many of us, we made some of the best memories of our lives while viewing the world through the lens of a child.

In the same book, Fulghum writes, “I want to be 5 years old again for an hour. I want to laugh a lot and cry a lot. I want to be picked up or rocked to sleep in someone’s arms, and carried up to bed just one more time.”

Obviously, for him, those

days were perhaps among his very best. I, too, believe that we should strive to extend the innocence of childhood as long as possible, but I also feel that we can make incredible memories at any point during our lives.

When we were children, though, a wide range of emotions seemed more vivid and occurred with more frequency. Perhaps, those who seek to reclaim their childhood, to be the Ponce de Leon in search of the fountain of youth, are really trying to recapture the vibrancy of life that is often experienced at a younger age.

What if we could do just that, though? That is, experience life to its fullest every day.

The following setting is in stark contrast to an author reflecting on his childhood. It was 1993 and Jim Valvano, former basketball coach at North Carolina State University, was accepting the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award at the inaugural ESPYs. Neither was the case on a pictureperfect Thursday evening at Hanover Golf Club as the host Shark Attack opened the 2018 Greater Richmond Aquatic League swimming season with a 1249-847 victory over the Tidal Waves from Kings Charter.

GRAL regular season events are quintessential summertime evenings in America.

Dozens of families bring not only the competitors, but blankets, chairs, and activities for younger siblings. The host club fires up the grill, filling the air with an alluring combination of summertime treats and chlorine. On this night, a pool constantly filled with Sharks and Tidal Waves swam the evening away, unchained by the freedom of knowing there wouldn’t be a bus waiting to pick them up for school the next morning.

Opening night also brings change, like a 9-year-old boy who swam his 25 yards in the backstroke as he did the year before, only to be told by supporters beside the pool that his race was only half completed, dutifully turning around and

heading back to the starting block in his first 50-yard competition. There are new swimmers of all ages, returning swimmers trying new events.

Bringing symmetry and occasionally some sanity to the affair are the familiar faces of head and assistant coaches, and

an army of volunteers, handling time cards, getting competitors ready for races, and keeping score. And while the home team won this meet, you would never know it looking on the faces of all competitors. At these meets, it is more about improving one’s own performance, and

– while attempting to grab a first place for your team – little scoreboard watching as competitors from both teams talk and enjoy the evening.

When the swimmers get older, there’s a delicate balance between competing and directing. Just ask Logan Amatruda

of Kings Charter. His older brother, Tristan, coaches the Tidal Waves, and Logan, a rising junior at Atlee, is not only competing – one of six quadruple winners for Kings Charter on Thursday – but lending a hand at directing, too.

“I’m swimming, and I’m

also coaching. You’ve got to balance those, help the little ones, but also help the team out by swimming,” Amatruda said. “I like it. I’ve been swimming for 12 years now.”

Hanover youth discover the ‘Ultimate’ experience

By Monica Hunsaker For the Hanover Local HANOVER – A strict code of conduct that holds individuals accountable for fairness and fun makes Ultimate Frisbee one of the most dynamic youth team sports and lays the foundations for unprecedented camaraderie.

“The spirit of teamwork characterizes the sport,” Randy Lee of the Richmond Ultimate Youth Organization said.

RUYO aims to create opportu-

nities for kids to learn and play Ultimate Frisbee in Richmond and the surrounding areas.

The sport, developed in 1968 by New Jersey high school students, is a high-intensity non-contact sport played with a flying disc – such as a Frisbee – that encourages players to develop throwing skills as well as stamina and agility in addition to its social benefits.

camps and events in Hanover County and elsewhere in the Richmond metropolitan area.

“Just coming to these events, you really can see the brotherhood behind Ultimate represented between Randy and his guys,” said Sandy Miller, who’s been watching son Sean play at Lee’s events for almost two years now, said.

Those “guys” are those who not only help Lee regularly teach, coach and guide the young players, but also played a role in developing his own passion for Ultimate – one that would persist throughout Lee’s life.

“Randy played with all these guys for years before any of us had kids and now we all have our kids out here playing together,” his wife Michelle said.

One can see that bond is a special dynamic. Their love for being right on the field with the

kids is apparent and they run a well-oiled machine. The kids naturally take to helping one another and no time is wasted on banter, but they immediately delve into play.

“One of the big pushes of Ultimate is good sportsmanship and it’s rewarded in every game. I love that the kids are encouraged to call their own fouls,” said Sandy’s husband, Ross Miller.

The intention is for Ultimate Frisbee to be played without referees at the professional level and until that point, the game is played just so.

“Ultimate relies on a game spirit which places responsibility for fair play on every player,” Lee explained. “Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rues and the basic joy of play,” he added.

This attribute unique to Ultimate Frisbee could one day set standards for competitive conduct. Many sports could benefit from embracing similar codes.

“The guys can usually find a way to come to an agreement themselves when things come up and that’s not easy to do. Calling your own fouls is top-level sportsmanship,” said Artan Cami. He’s already seeing the benefits that participating in Ultimate and learning to work with peers has had on his son Aiden, who began with Lee’s league just this season.

Ultimate Frisbee challenges and helps grow any type of young athlete physically, too.

had strategy to help his performance, partly due to a hot rivalry provided by the Shark Attack’s Brendan Cox. “I try to go out and have good under waters, swim as fast as I could,” Amatruda explained. “It’s definitely nice having someone to race.”

For Hanover Golf Club’s Sydney McAdoo, opening night means a chance to see friends, and improve times. Her firstplace finish in the 11-12 girls 50-yard backstroke in 34.90 included shaving a third of a second off her best time, a positive start to a road which has its destination.

“I try to make it to Champs for every event I swim,” McAdoo noted. “Champs is a big meet that comes together at the end of the year where swimmers from all different kinds of clubs, even if they’re not in your division, come and compete.”

Champs, the two-day GRAL finale, is set for July 28-29 at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center in Chesterfield.

As for the opener, Amatruda was joined by Tyler Caten, Roger Humberson, Caitlyn Lane, Campbell Whyte and Cole Whyte as quadruple winners for Kings Charter. Triple winners for the Tidal Waves were Maggie Caten, Henry Crain, Lucy Henning, Megan Lane, Hudson Lutton, Ethan Salser and Hannah Sherrill.

For the victorious Shark Attack, Cox was a triple winner joined by Cameron Greene, Samantha Cox, Robert Jones, Anne Stewart Mallory, Melanie McAdoo, Will McAdoo, Ava McKinney, Cole Nuckols, Dylan Schloss and Hilton Sanders.

“I’m trying to do my best, try hard, and try to beat my best times,” Sanders said after competing in the 9-10 boys 50-yard backstroke.

His first action after clearing the pool? Finding a coach to see if he had a new personal best.

Indeed, his 43.72 shaved .46 off his previous best.

The Millers appreciate that Sean, while playing Ultimate, isn’t at risk for many of the injuries common to most sports.

Yet they’ve still witnessed those skills learned in Ultimate exponentially sharpen his play level within the various sports he participates in throughout the year. They’re confident the league and camps will remain a constant for him as he enters Lee-Davis next year.

Coach Lee is determined to introduce Ultimate to more and more Hanover youth and to help create the necessary organizations to keep their learned skills competitive. Having played while at William & Mary from 1991-95 and even leading as his team’s captain during his junior and senior years, Lee remains passionate about creating such opportunities for Hanover kids who might just find their niche in Ultimate.

Last Sunday’s high turnout for D-League is itself a testament to the growth of interest

in the sport locally, even in just the last year. Twenty-nine kids showed up to play and looked to be having a blast at Dorey Park. At the same event last year, they they hosted just 14.

Players form teams based upon skill levels and how each player’s skills can benefit from a team dynamic, rather than age or gender. Ultimately, you get a field full of boys and girls, ranging in age from 9 to 15, truly playing together. That level of inclusivity is rare in athletics.

Additionally, the sport’s inexpensive requirement for only a frisbee and a field make it financially feasible for both parents and schools, keeping it accessible to young athletes across various socioeconomic statuses, which is of high importance to Coach Lee. Such special aspects of the sport, as well as its fun reputation, are giving Ultimate a better recognized position in youth athletics, even in a bastion of traditional sports like Hanover county. Lee knows it will take time, but he has already seen excited kids pushing for Ultimate clubs at their schools.

“We’ll get there!” he said with certainty.

Maddie Medei, Charlie Sanders, Finn Winegardner and Lily Voekler, who dropped nearly one and a half seconds while winning the 15-18 girls 50-yard backstroke in 33.12, while helping the 15-18 mixed 200-yard freestyle relay team win the final race of the night, teaming with Brendan Cox, Kemp Jones and Carter Mallory to finish in 1:49.75.

The two teams will meet again in their regular season finale on July 17 at Kings Charter. By then, the swimmers will take a different approach, with one last opportunity to qualify for Champs. But one element will continue to perJoel Klein for The Local meate the evening air: fun.

was quickly coming to an end because of cancer. The message he delivered that evening is among the most memorable of the last quarter century, and among the most impactful, as it launched his V Foundation for Cancer Research. In several ways, it was reminiscent of Robert Fulghum’s desire to embrace the memories and simple lessons of his youth. Coach Valvano said, “To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think.

You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions

moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special.”

Facing the end of his life, Valvano was trying to live every day to its fullest. One might say, he appreciated it as a child might. During the same speech, he joked about the fact that he was being given a cue to wrap it up so that the TV network could cut to the scheduled commercial break and get on with the show.

He continued speaking anyway, noting that those types of worries were no longer concerns for him. It put things in perspective for all of those privileged enough to hear him, whether in person or on television, and, frankly, no

one wanted him to stop.

Robert Fulghum was on to something in his book.

Kindergarten was a simpler time, with fewer cares and new experiences every day. However, as important as that first year was, we do not learn everything we need to know in kindergarten. So, what does it all mean?

It means that the 12 years that followed your initial year of schooling has molded you into the person you are today. The lessons you have learned, the knowledge you have gained, and the experiences you have had can help you to approach life in a more meaningful way than when you were younger … if you will allow it to happen.

Now, as you prepare for the next chapter in your lives and begin to take on the mounting

responsibilities of adulthood, I challenge you to take stock of what might appear important at the time versus those things that actually are important as Coach Valvano demonstrated. Perhaps then, we can slow down enough to laugh, to cry, to think, and to experience many more of those “full days” that he was describing. I also have to believe that some of those things that are truly important are the same timeless truths that Robert Fulghum described. So, as you take your next steps, I also challenge you to play fair, say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody, and take the time to enjoy some warm cookies and cold milk.

Congratulations, Class of 2018. May each of you enjoy many more full days, and may you impact others so that they may do the same.

How to read a nursery plant tag

S

hopping for new plants for a home can be an exciting undertaking. Nurseries and garden centers are often home to dozens of types of plant species that come in various colors, leaf variations and sizes. Such variety can make choosing plants more fun while also making the process of buying plants a bit complicated, especially for novices. Thankfully, plant tags can help consumers make informed decisions.

Understanding how to read plant tags is key to making good choices. Such labels contain a lot of information, but once a person knows how to decode that data, he or she is well on the way to choosing the right plants.

Such names will be written in italics on the tag and are usually one or two words. The scientific name includes the genus (group) and the species of the plant.

Cultivar A plant tag may further describe the type of plant by including the cultivar. A cultivar is the variation on the species. It may describe a size or color variation. The cultivar is listed in single quotations by the scientific name.

Sun requirements The tag should list how much sun exposure the plant requires to thrive. It may be anywhere from full sun to full shade.

Common name The common name of the plant tends to be the most noticeable word or words on the tag. This is the name the plant is referred to outside of scientific circles. Most plants have one or more common names in addition to their botanical name.

Height and spread The label frequently includes the maximum growing height and width the plant should reach when mature. This gives gardeners an understanding of just how much room the plant will take up in the garden and how to space plants in a landscape.

Water needs

Scientific names are also known as the Latin names of the plant.

How much water the plant requires may be featured on the tag

as well. This helps gardeners know if they need soil to be damp or relatively dry.

Hardiness or zone Tags that list zones will describe the coldest zone in which the plant can exist. Otherwise, it will give a range. Many annuals will not list a hardiness zone because they are not expected to last beyond one season.

Perennial or annual The tag should designate the plant as an annual or perennial.

Annuals are not expected to last through the winter and will need to be replanted the following year.

Perennials can over-winter and will regenerate year after year.

Tags also may list information such as special care needs, drought tolerance, uses for the plant, and when the plant blooms. Some plant labels will inform gardeners if the plants were produced organically or without GMO practices. Trademark information also may be included.

Plant tags provide important information for selecting and growing plants. When noted, tags help gardeners make the right selections and keep plants as healthy as possible.

ccording to the Penn State Department of Plant Science, thatch is a loose and intermingled organic layer of both dead and living shoots, stems and roots that develops between the zone of green vegetation and the soil surface. While leaf clippings may be found in a thatch layer, they do not typically contribute to thatch buildup because clippings are easily broken down by microorganisms in the soil. While some homeowners may only know thatch as a threat they must periodically address by aerating their soil, thatch can benefit turf depending on the amount of it that is present. For example, a layer of thatch that is 1 to 2 inch or less can insulate the turf from extreme temperatures and fluctuations in soil moisture. Entries must be received by Sponsor by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 to be eligible.

Only one ballot per person, and only one vote per category per ballot is allowed. All ballots must include name, address, email address and telephone number and must list a minimum of ten (10) business contestants to be counted. Ballots that are incomplete, illegible or damaged are void and will not be accepted or eligible. Any participant suspected of using a proxy for voting, concealing one’s true identity, using the name of a fictitious person or a real person without such person’s authorization will be disqualified. All registration information submitted by voters to the Promotion must be valid. Sponsor reserves the right to withhold prizes until a completed form W-9 is received.

If a dispute arises regarding who submitted an entry, the entry will be deemed submitted by the person in whose name the entry was made.

Odds of winning depend upon the number of eligible entries.

The Sponsor reserves the right to withdraw the transmission of the Promotion and award the prize from among the eligible entries received prior to the date of the withdrawal. Entrants agree to abide by these Official Rules. Failure to comply with these rules may result in disqualification from this Contest. The Sponsor reserves the right to permanently disqualify from this Contest any person they believe has violated these Official Rules.

A participant grants to the Sponsor and its affiliates the right to use and publish his/her proper name and address online and in print, or any other media, in connection with the Contest. By accepting a prize, a winner grants the Sponsor the right to use his or her name and likeness for advertising and promotional purposes without further compensation. Participants agree (a) to release and hold the Sponsor and all of its respective officers, directors, employees, representatives and agents harmless from any and all liability for any injuries, losses or damages of any kind, including death, or property resulting in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from acceptance, possession, misuse or use of the prize or participation in this Contest; (b) that under no circumstances will participants be permitted to obtain awards for any punitive, incidental or consequential damages; (c) all causes of action arising out of or connected with this Contest, or any prize awarded, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action; and (d) any and all claims, judgments, and awards shall be limited to actual out-of- pocket costs incurred, excluding attorneys’ fees and court costs.

7. LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY: By participating in this Contest, each participant assumes all liability for any injury or damages caused or claimed to be caused by participation in the Contest and/or the acceptance and/or use of any prize and releases the Sponsor from any such liability. The Sponsor is not responsible for Internet crashes or slowdowns caused by network congestion, viruses, sabotage, satellite failures, phone line failures, electrical outages, natural disasters or acts of man or God, lost, late, misdirected, postage-due, unintelligible, returned, undelivered entries or email, or for lost, interrupted or unavailable satellite, network, server, Internet Service Provider (ISP), Website, or other connections availability, accessibility or traffic congestion, miscommunications, failed computer, network, telephone, satellite or cable hardware or software or lines, or technical failure, or jumbled, scrambled, delayed or misdirected transmissions, computer hardware or software malfunctions, failures or difficulties, or other errors of any kind whether human, mechanical, electronic or network. Persons who tamper with or abuse any aspect of this Contest or Website, or act in violation of the Official Rules, or act in any manner to threaten or abuse or harass any person, or violate Website’s terms of service, as solely determined by the Sponsor, will be disqualified. The Sponsor is not responsible for any incorrect or inaccurate information whether caused by Website users, tampering, hacking, or by any of the programming or equipment associated with or used in this Contest, and assumes no responsibility for any errors, omission, deletion, interruption or delay in operation or transmission or communication line failure, theft or destruction or unauthorized Website access. Any use of robotic, macro, automatic, programmed or like methods of play will void all such plays, and may subject that participant to disqualification.

The Sponsor reserves the right at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual (and all of his or her submissions) who tampers with the submission process. The Sponsor is not responsible for injury or damage to participant’s or any other person’s computer or property related to or resulting from participating in this Contest. Should any portion of Contest be, in the Sponsor’s sole opinion, compromised by virus, worms, bugs, unauthorized human intervention or other causes which, in the sole opinion of the Sponsor, corrupts or impairs administration, security, fairness or proper operation of this Contest, the Sponsor reserves the right at its sole discretion to suspend, modify or terminate the Contest.

IN NO EVENT SHALL THE SPONSOR BE LIABLE FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL, SPECIAL, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, EVEN IF IT HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF THE DAMAGES. IN ANY EVENT THE MAXIMUM AGGREGATE LIABILITY OF SPONSOR TO ANY PERSON DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY RELATING TO THIS CONTEST, THE PRIZES, OR USE OR ENJOYMENT OF ANY PRIZE SHALL NOT EXCEED THE SUM OF $10.00.

By entering this contest, each entrant agrees that (i) any and all disputes, claims, and causes of action arising out of or in connection with the drawing or the prize awarded, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action; (ii) any and all claims, judgments and awards shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred, including costs, directly or indirectly associated with entering this contest, but in no event will attorneys’ fees be awarded or recoverable; and (iii) under no circumstances will any entrant be permitted to obtain any award for, and entrant hereby knowingly and expressly waives all rights to, any damages other than actual out-of-pocket expenses.

The Contest and the rights and obligations of the Sponsor and participants associated therewith will be governed and controlled by the laws of the State of Virginia, applicable to contracts made and performed therein without reference to the applicable choice of law provisions. All actions, proceedings, and litigation relating to the Sponsor in connection with this Contest will be instituted and prosecuted solely within Hanover County, Virginia, and the parties consent to the jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located within Hanover County, Virginia. Participants in the Contest hereby waive any right to jury trial relating to this contest against the Sponsor. With respect to any claim against Sponsor relating to this Contest or any prize, any acceptance, possession or use of any prize, valid service of process and proper filing of any claim in a court of competent jurisdiction must occur within three (3) months of the date such claim accrued, or such claim shall be forever waived, barred and discharged.

The invalidity or unenforceability of any provision of these Official Rules shall not affect the validity or enforceability of any other provision. In the event that any provision is determined to be invalid or otherwise unenforceable or illegal, these Official Rules shall otherwise remain in effect and shall be construed in accordance with their terms as if the invalid or illegal provision were not contained herein.

8. Sponsor. The decisions of the Sponsor regarding the selection of winners and all other aspects of the Contest shall be final and binding on all persons in all respects. The Sponsor is not responsible for typographical, printing or other inadvertent errors in these Official Rules or in other materials relating to the contest.
