By Logan Barry for The Hanover Local ASHLAND – Updates on the Carter Park Pool and Ashland’s “Playful City USA” designation, in addition to the first project on the town’s Parks and Recreation Committee’s Master Plan, were addressed during the June 8 meeting.

Joseph Collins, clerk of the Ashland Town Council, provided the updates and joined committee members in talking about the master plan.

After some maintenance issues that led to a rather unfortunate situation with the plumbing that were effecting the bathrooms at Carter Park Pool, Collins said it had to be temporarily closed while a Public Works crew came in to resolve the problem.

Collins said the pool was scheduled to open for the weekend as planned. He explained how they weren’t sure if the problem was due to sediment building up over time inside of the pumps, but that the Public Works Department was able to clear up the clog using a plumber snake.

He also told committee members that there was going to be a “free admission day” on Saturday, June 10, to make up for the time that Carter Park Pool was closed.

The pool is scheduled to remain open only on weekends and holidays until Friday, June 16. Beginning June 17, it will transition into its daily operation schedule until Sept.

Collins did note that the bathroom on the outside of Carter Park Pool stays open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., and there are automatic magnets pre-set to lock the doors at 9 p.m.

“But if you happen to be in there at 8:59 [p.m.] and it locks, there is a release button,” he said, referring to how no one will have to spend the night inside the bathroom if they find themselves in that situation.

As for the Playful City USA designation, in which the town strives to maintain, Collins said Ashland is working with the Capital Region Collaborative towards a goal for a “playful region,” in terms of the surrounding metropolitan counties.

“We all applied and we actually all got it. So, this is our first year getting that; [it’s] pretty exciting,” Collins said.

According to its website, Playful Cities USA is a recognition program that honors cities and towns that ensure that the children in their communities, particularly kids from low-income families, receive the balanced and active play that they need in order to thrive in their youth.

Turning to the Master Plan, Collins told commit-

tee members that connecting Dejarnette Park to Stoney Run Trail is a priority.

He said another priority the Parks and Recreation Department is focusing on is improving the connectivity of the Carter Park pathways with Stoney Run Trail. “[That’s] a really good point, because there’s no real sidewalk or trail or anything to get to Stoney Run Trail,” Collins said.

Toward the conclusion of the meeting, committee members talked about the current Ashland Town Hall study, and how the garden surrounding that property is considered a park and how they wouldn’t want a parking lot to take that over.

Collins advised members that the town would be hosting public information meetings for the public to add input in the coming months. He said he would notify them of those dates when they are made available.

By Logan Barry for The Hanover Local ASHLAND -- Known as a gospel legend, Bubba Johnson reflected on and sung about 50 years of his gospel ministry at a Juneteenth celebration that was co-sponsored

by The Hanover County Black Heritage Society Inc. on Sunday, June 11, at RandolphMacon College’s Blackwell Auditorium in Ashland.

“Juneteenth” is a term that has been given to a series of numerous types of celebrations, taking place over multiple days that are held around the nation, honoring the historical day that the last enslaved people in North America were freed in the United States by Abraham Lincoln’s signature on the Emancipation Proclamation.

Johnson, who was born and raised in Montpelier, comes from a long line of talented musicians. His talented encompasses being able to play the piano, the electronic keyboard and the organ. The master musician also sings.

When Johnson reached the age of 17, his voice had gained popularity among local churches in different areas of the county such as Ashland, Montpelier and Beaverdam – but his singing talent also was familiar throughout churches in Richmond.

By the time he was 22, he had discovered his ability to write music and lyrics, so he began to organize writing arrangements and started to compose music.

Public input wanted on plans for Town Hall ASHLAND -- In order to collect citizen input about the proposed Ashland Town Hall project, a public input meeting will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, and

Daughters of the American Revolution present awards Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE -- The Scotchtown Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) presented its annual Youth Citizenship Awards to Hanover County students on Sunday, June 4, at Fairfield Presbyterian Church.

This award is presented to girls or boys in grades five through eight (public, private, or parochial), who fulfill the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism.

High School senior DAR Good Citizen Awards are given at another time.

Dr. Joseph P. Casey, former Deputy County Administrator for Hanover and now County

Administrator of Chesterfield County, spoke to the students about the importance of being involved in their local community.

The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children.

Sarah will be attending William and Mary in the fall. She is the daughter of Jonathan and Melissa Ball of Mechanicsville.

After 25 years, his advice mattered most

A

tie. That’s the last Father’s Day gift I purchased for Dad just weeks before he suddenly died. He was buried wearing that tie.

I was living in Bluefield at the time and had gone to my parents’ home to celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday, June 21, 1992. Within weeks, we would learn my father’s fate: lung cancer. He died on July 7.

On social media, I’ve seen several family and friends acknowledging the significance their fathers had or have in their lives as they’ve commented and even changed their profile photo for the annual observance.

For some reason, that tie came to mind the other night as sleep approached. Soon, it will

have been 25 years since Dad left us. He is in our thoughts every day. What an exceptional man he was. He loved God, his church, his family, his friends, his community and life.

A big man, I’ve often described him as a “gentle giant;” he had a deep voice and was a “man’s man.”

He could fix anything and solve any problem — that’s how “Daddy’s little girl” saw him.

The first Father’s Day after his death I wrote a column about still picking up the phone to seek his advice. His guidance stood above the rest.

Dad was very intelligent and strong, yet, when it came to my mother, he was a big ol’ softie. They had celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Dec. 29, 1991, and renewed their vows. My sister and I had no idea when we planned the party that he wouldn’t be around for their 50th.

Mom was his sweetheart and they were like teenagers even as he took his last breath. That

kind of love is blessed and enduring. My mother never considered another man in her life after Dad died. She says they will be reunited one day.

Dad was the big kid in our neighborhood. It wasn’t unusual for some of the local boys to come to the house and ask Mom if “Big D could come out and play.” His name was Dallas, but the nickname (I’m not even sure how it started) stuck.

I think of the people he helped as a licensed electrician — never charging for his services.

His belief in taking care of others extended to establishing a food pantry at our home church.

Thousands are fed every year.

The years don’t ease the loss. Dad is missed by so many. When my sister passed away in 2011, I hoped that he greeted her.

There is nobody like dad in a girl’s life. He is the one man in her life who always loves her.

House is too quiet without the sounds of children

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist It was too quiet around here. Normally, finding a peaceful spot in my home is more than elusive, but, last week, the silence was deafening.

Jack had departed for his annual trip to MDA Camp in Wakefield, and Sophie was on her graduation trip to New York City. At one point, she was getting a pedicure near Times Square, a well deserved pampering supplied by her older sister.

Emma has been busy with end of year parties with

her friends, and taking part in an exciting last week of school.

For most parents, the thought of a few days of peace and solitude seems inviting, and I won’t deny having time for you is a worthy pursuit. Problem is, it’s been so long since I had any of those moments, especially coupled together, that I’m not sure what to do.

The prospects of a few days without making lunches or running the daily taxi service that any parent will tell you is non-stop, should have appeared like a breath of fresh air.

But watching children move from kids to young

Tackling the issue of whether elected school board works If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Should we consider the letter as irrefutable first-hand proof that an elected taxpayer has ambitions bigger than their abilities and not a good fit for a Hanover County School Board member?

How about we say Hanover voters are not qualified to make good choices at the polls?

If either of or both cases are true, Hanover County leaders are smart dudes not to have an elected person on the school board.

I can’t believe having an elected Hanover taxpayer on the board would be so dumb, dumb, dumb? If that’s the case, over 90% of elected school boards in the USA are staffed with incapable elected taxpayers. This also includes the more than 80% elected school boards in Virginia.

That being said, I see no other way to protect our school board from elected taxpayers except maybe to go with the Trump plan of appointing people with personal loyalty and the knowledge that “If I appoint you, I can disappoint you” and “It’s my way or the highway”.

We can do the Centralism thing as I understand it works well in other countries.

Being a Dodge Ram owner I used to say Ford trucks were no good and then one day I was asked if I ever had one.

Well, no, but I’m sure they’re no good.

The letter had a one-liner trivia question and I wonder if others got it correct without looking at the answer?

(Question was) Which county has a waiting list of people wanting to become its residence (residents)?

I had the answer as soon as I read the question. Not a doubt in my mind it would be Hanover County with all the traffic.

Yesterday, being dumb, dumb, dumb I got on that waiting list traffic at Pole Green and Bell Creek roads trying to get myself back to Eastern Hanover. I think I was #43 in line.

Pam was deeply passionate about education, and had been pursuing licensing so that she could return to teaching. She loved to read mysteries, especially anything by Agatha Christie, and doted on the family dog, Candy. BASIL JOHNSON JR. Basil Harvey Johnson Jr., 70, of Ashland, passed away on June 16, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, Basil Harvey Johnson Sr. and Elizabeth Scott Johnson. Family left to cherish his memory include his wife of 50 years, Carol Tomlin Johnson of Ashland; sons, Basil Harvey “Bo” Johnson III (Pam), of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Heath Johnson (Gwynn) of Powhatan; and grandchildren, Haley, Bailey, Grace, Blair, Brett, Caleb and Sadie. Harvey graduated from Hermitage High School, class of 1965. He honorably served his country in the Marine Corps Reserves. He was the founder and owner of Diesel Power of Virginia, Inc./Harvey’s Transmissions.

He loved fishing and relic hunting, but, above all, loved his family.

ANNIE HALEY Annie Lucille Haley, 104, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2017, at her home in Ashland. She was born in 1912 in Caroline County, a daughter of the late Edna Cobb and Audubon Leonard Smith. She and her family, which included five siblings, Lloyd, Audubon, Leonard, Ashton and Louise, lived on Cool Water Farm in Caroline County. Lucille was a very good student and her love of learning allowed her to further her education at Fredericksburg State Teachers College (University of Mary Washington). Upon graduation in 1932, she and her husband, Cedon, were married and made their home in Ashland, where they raised their four children.

Lucille loved to dance (especially the Charleston), even into her 90s.

She also loved to play bridge, travel with her family and friends and attend basketball games. She attended almost all of the home men and women’s basketball games at Randolph-Macon College for many years. She was a proud member of “The Golden Girls” as a supporter of the teams. Preceding her in death were her husband, Cedon; son, C.J.; grandchildren, Donna and Chris; sons-in-law, Don Gregory and Morris Rooke. She is survived by her daughters, Gwen Gregory, Diane Wood (Billy) and Kay Rooke; daughter-inlaw, Mickey Haley; grandchildren, J. Haley III, Melissa Wickham (Brad) and Ray Gregory (Jill); seven great-grandchildren, two greatgreat-granddaughters; and special friend, Barbara (Jean) Melton. A memorial service was held at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Ashland at 800 Thompson Street in Ashland. Interment was held prior to service at 12 p.m. at Carmel Baptist Church in Ruther Glen.

National Main Street accreditation goes to AMSA Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com ASHLAND – The Ashland Main Street Association (AMSA) has been designated as an accredited Main Street America™ program for meeting rigorous performance standards set by the National Main Street Center.

Each year, the National Main Street Center and its Coordinating Program partners announce the list of accredited Main Street America programs in recognition of their exemplary commitment to preservation-based economic development and community revitalization through the Main Street Approach®.

“It is a great honor to recognize this year’s 828 nationally Accredited Main Street America programs for their outstanding work to transform downtown and neighborhood commercial districts,” Patrice Frey, president & CEO of the National Main Street Center, said. “Main Streets are

the heart of our communities, and the work they do to create quality public spaces, catalyze local entrepreneurship, and support downtown housing is more important than ever. Across the country, Main Street America programs truly strengthen the economic, social, and cultural fabric of their entire communities.”

AMSA’s performance is annually evaluated by the Virginia Main Street Program, which works in partnership with the National Main Street Center to identify the local programs that meet 10 performance standards.

Evaluation criteria determines the communities that are building comprehensive and sustainable revitalization efforts and include standards such as fostering strong publicprivate partnerships, securing an operating budget, tracking programmatic progress and actively preserving historic buildings.

“We are proud to have

received National Main Street Accreditation for the fourth consecutive year,” said AMSA Executive Director Tom Wulf.

“This recognition, in conjunction with our Virginia Main Street Designation, allows us access to a wealth of resources from state and federal programs that would not be available otherwise. Since our designation in 2013, we have applied for and earned selected grants and services valued at more than $220,000. These are our tax dollars coming back into the community.”

Wulf announced several changes to the Ashland Main Street Board of Directors.

The board added three new members to three-year terms: Chris Zaldivar of Hometown Realty, Courtney Rowe, a graduate of the Ashland Citizen Leadership Academy, and Mike Hildebrand, owner of James River Nursery and donor of the holiday tree for AMSA’s annual Light Up the Tracks event.

Three members are rotating off the board after serving two terms as required by AMSA by-laws: Hugh Joyce, past board president who was instrumental in the efforts to revitalize and reopen the Ashland Theatre; Jennifer Chambers, Promotions Committee chair and editor/ publisher of Get Centered; and Darrell Leftwich, who served five consecutive years as board treasurer. Joyce and Chambers will continue to serve as board members of the Ashland Theater Foundation. Leftwich will continue to serve as the chair of the Ashland Economic Development Authority.

“Hugh, Jen and Darrell have made significant contributions to the community through AMSA ,” Wulf said.

“We have some big shoes to fill with their departures, but I’m confident our new board members will help lead AMSA to even greater success going forward.”

The AMSA board will elect

new officers for the 2017-2018 fiscal year at its June board meeting. Bill Gatewood has agreed to continue to serve as board president, Sara Holloway will continue as vice president, and Bob Brown will continue as secretary. New board member Courtney Rowe has volunteered to serve as treasurer.

The board also will begin its search for a new executive director as Wulf has announced his intention to step out of the role.

“It’s an optimal time for a transition,” Wulf said. “I will be here to facilitate a seamless handoff to a new director and will assist with orientation and training.”

Wulf said he plans to continue to support AMSA’s efforts in a different capacity.

The mission of the Ashland Main Street Association is to preserve, enhance and promote downtown Ashland through cooperative efforts among local businesses, residents, community organizations, Randolph-Macon College and the Town. Its vision is to make

Ashland a destination location by offering a diverse mix of businesses, cultural and community attractions, pedestrianfriendly streets, and attractive public spaces.

Main Street America has been helping revitalize older and historic commercial districts for more than 35 years.

Today, it is a network of more than 1,000 neighborhoods and communities, rural and urban, who share both a commitment to place and to building stronger communities through preservation-based economic development. Since 1980, communities participating in the program have leveraged more than $71.35 billion in new public and private investment, generated 583,869 net new jobs and 131,974 net new businesses, and rehabilitated more than 267,800 buildings.

By Dave Lawrence and Caroline Naumann Hanover Local MECHANICSVILLE – It was close, but the Mechanicsville Marlins eked out a win in their Greater Richmond Aquatic League season opener against visiting Kings Charter Thursday night.

The Marlins edged the Tidal Waves 1015-973, but the key point for both teams is that a number of their younger swimmers got their first meet experience and others showed tremendous improvements in their times from previous years.

“We’ve gained a lot of young 8 and unders – 10 and unders, honestly,” said Mechanicsville head coach Ari Brothers. “I think this season will go really well. … It will be fun.”

Kings Charter head coach Tristan Amatruda said his team has gone through a lot of change as well.

“We’ve had kind of a unique and big shift this year with a lot of families that have been on the team for several years [moving] out of the neighborhood … and we’ve had a lot of new – and young, in most cases – families that have moved into the neighborhood, so it’s been interesting,” Amatruda said. “We’ve had this influx of a ton of new kids, some with swimming backgrounds and some not with swimming backgrounds.”

Lambert takes one for team in Post 175 win

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Sometimes you hit the ball.

Sometimes the ball hits you.

Mechanicsville Post 175 right fielder Canon Lambert used both experiences to advantage in the team’s American Legion season opener at LeeDavis Thursday night, driving in Mechanicsville’s first run with a single, then getting hit by a pitch with bases loaded to bring home the winning run in the 11th inning for a 6-5 victory over visiting West End Post 361.

Lambert stole a bit of thunder from teammate Trey Karnes, who led Lee-Davis last season by getting hit by pitch and who was hit twice himself Thursday night. Karnes didn’t mind.

“I was just glad for the win, no matter who hit it or who did it,” Karnes said.

Karnes finished with a 2of-3 night for a run and three RBI. Lambert finished 2-of-4 for three RBI. Both combined for three RBI in the ninth to send the game into extra innings.

With Mechanicsville trailing 5-2, Dalton Davis opened the bottom of the ninth with a single.

gifted younger Johnson wrote over 101 songs before his first CD was published in 2001, entitled “Bubba Johnson and Company.”

On Sept. 17, 2016, half a century later, Johnson proudly released his 4th project in his collection, “My 50 Mile Journey.”

In addition to his gospel performance at the June 11 event, the Juneteenth program was a 50-year reminiscence of his life as well as the musical impact he’s had on the community.

Alphine Jefferson, president of The Hanover County Black Heritage Society, said his story is fascinating, and said he is a wonderful speaker.

“As someone [who] has been a gospel personality for more than 50 years, he has a large following and has unique insights,” Jefferson said, explaining that he has a large following in the Greater

Richmond region.

Pointing out that he is widely known along the East Coast, Johnson said, “But I also do a lot of gospel at the churches here – I do a lot of church events; people just call me for all sorts of things, religiously.”

However, he doesn’t limit his musical talent to churches.

“I even did something at a bar, I was invited to Cary 100 to perform some gospel there – it was the first time that I ever did that before; but it was successful, they had Bloody Marys,” Johnson said jokingly.

Cary 100 is a restaurant and lounge on Cary Street in Richmond that serves lunch and hosts live entertainment and other events on a weekly basis.

“I was received very well there.”

As Jefferson mentioned, Johnson’s unique insights are a part of what attracts his audience. “I can feel it when people need something,” he said, referring to fans he sees at his concerts.

In an interview after the June 11 celebration, Johnson said, “One example is something that happened to me tonight. I had a 14-year-old girl come up to me, I was giving autographs, and I could feel this little girl keep tapping me, and she asked me ‘Can I speak with you?’ ” “I said, ‘Of course,’ and she was hugging me and she was talking into my ear – she said, ‘I know I am young, but I am

just going through so many problems and I just couldn’t deal with them,’ but she said ‘After tonight, you don’t know how you’ve blessed me, and how much of a difference you’ve made in my life tonight, I just need a hug from you’.

That hasn’t ever been said to me in my whole life.”

“I was honored for a lot of things tonight, but that in itself really honored me tonight,” Johnson said.

Johnson graduated from Patrick Henry High School and became a substitute teacher there as well as a school bus driver for a time.

The celebration of Juneteenth began in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865. On that day, which was 2½ years after President Lincoln’s legislation ordering the freedom of all American slaves went into effect, African-Americans who were in Galveston learned that they were finally free by order of this document.

The Hanover County Black Heritage Society is a

local nonprofit organization and community group that is dedicated to the collection and the preservation of all kinds of documents, memorabilia, artifacts, photographs and pictures in addition to both public and private information that are related to the history of African-Americans in Hanover County.

In the words of Johnson’s personal motto, “The beat is nice, but listen to the words to hear the ministry. As God’s humble servant, I thank you for 50 years of encouragement and support.”

QUIET

Sophie’s graduation from middle school provided the first food for thought. It almost caught me by surprise, and it seems like just yesterday when I held her in my arms as a baby.

There’s no doubt this is an exciting time of life, and the sight of a child graduating evokes an enormous sense of pride from every parent. But, I now recognize it’s also a sign of changing times when children become more independent and parents begin a process of preparation for the day when we all have to let our children go, free to make their own way and achieve their goals.

That time is not here yet, but the solitude of a quiet home was a stark reminder that my kids are growing up. That makes me both happy and sad.

Graduation, summer camp, special trips and other celebrations of the season are a time of joy for all parents. But, it’s also a time to realize that these special days won’t last forever, and, one day, our children do leave the safety and security of home and venture out into the world to pursue their set of dreams.

It’s almost a classic Catch 22 for parents. The thought of not packing lunches or doing endless loads of laundry seems appealing, but it’s a thought always tinged with that tiny voice that tells you that it will be all missed when it’s gone.

ood morning/afternoon.

It is my privilege to welcome family members, friends, distinguished guests, and, most importantly, the Class of 2017. Undoubtedly, this is a day that you have dreamt about for quite a long time. I imagine the same may be true for the many parents in attendance. Today simultaneously represents the culmination of thirteen years of hard work and the beginning of the next phase of your life’s journey.

I, along with the Hanover County School Board, am grateful for the opportunity to be with you today to celebrate your accomplishments.

Graduates, my message to you today can be summed up in three words—Relevance, Equity, and Innovation. These words have been a focal point this year among our educators and staff, and they will guide all work in the school division for many years to come to ensure we continue to provide our students with an exceptional education.

By now, I’m sure some of you are asking yourselves, “What does this have to do with me? Why does this matter now? I’ve completed my work. I’m graduating.� Perhaps you’ve asked similar questions along the way about your coursework. “When will I ever have to use the Pythagorean Theorem? Why do I need to learn the periodic table? How do events from 200 years ago affect me now?� Well, I believe these are all great questions, which leads me to my first point—relevance.

As you enter into the workforce, military service, or higher education, your need for relevance will change from something you crave in your academic experience to a life perspective you may come to embrace.

Soon, you will no longer be preparing for the world as much as you will be living and working in it. Perhaps relevance in this context can be framed as a need for significance and importance. So, I challenge you to begin asking yourselves these questions instead, “Am I adding significance?

Do not be afraid of being labeled as “different� or even “eccentric.� You see, these words perfectly describe some of the greatest contributors to mankind. Not only can innovation lead to success, but it is, in fact, one of the most integral components.

Graduates, in just a very short time, you will walk across this stage. You will receive a diploma that is representative of the hard work you have invested.

The diplomas will appear very similar, with the most distinct difference of course being the name in the center.

This difference should not be underestimated. Each of you had a different path to arrive at this moment in time.

Embrace these differences because they are a part of what makes you, you.

Use your uniqueness to spur creativity and innovation without fear. At the same time, remember that those with whom you come in contact are individuals as well. Take the time to get to know them, to really know them. Only then can you be the best teammate possible by treating them with the equity they deserve. Finally, approach your next steps by asking yourself, “Am I adding relevance? Am I adding significance through my actions?�

Relevance, equity, and innovation can be found in almost any profession, but they do not occur by chance.

Like the dedication that brought you here today, cultivating these ideas will take a focused approach. I have no doubt that you are up to the challenge.
