By Melody Kinser Managing Editor MECHANICSVILLE – With a grade point average of 4.72, Timmy Shields leads the 2017 Class of Atlee High School as valedictorian.

The salutatorian is Drew Klesat, who has a 4.69565 (weighted) GPA. Shields is the son of Colleen and Chris Shields.

As he looks to continuing his education, Shields said, “I will be attending UVA and I intend to major in business with a concentration in finance. I hope to one day to either become a business

consultant or hedge fund analyst.”

The years at Atlee, he said, have been pleasant and memorable. “I have really enjoyed my time at Atlee and have met some unbelievable students and staff. They have helped mold me into the person I am today. I am truly honored to be the valedictorian.”

Klesat’s parents are Glen and Heather Klesat.

At Atlee, he has served as captain of the varsity soccer team and is a member of the Spanish Honor Society and Key Club.

Pepicelli’s Pizza honored for community service RICHMOND -- Tom and Lisa Checkosky, owners of Pepicelli’s Pizza in Ashland, didn’t know they’d been nominated for the 2017 Virginia Governor’s Volunteerism and Community Service Award for Outstanding Small Business, so, when they received the call that they’d won while in Florida celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary, they were confused at first.

Tom kept asking the person on the other line, “You mean in the entire state of Virginia, there was nobody else?” Once he realized what was happening, Tom said he was brought to tears.

The award ceremony was held at the Governor’s Mansion on April 20.

According to Tom, “The best way I can describe the event was it was the most informal, formal event, I have ever been to.”

He was surprised by the warmth and welcome extended to him and his family by Gov. Terry McAuliffe. The Governor even took selfies with some of Tom’s family.

The Checkoskys said they fell in love with Ashland and all its warmth and charm when they relocated to the town years ago to open their restaurant, Pepicelli’s, named after Lisa’s family.

Since the opening of the restaurant, the Checkosky family has become tremendous supporters of the Ashland and Beaverdam communities, volunteering and contributing in many area events and charities.

The couple say they enjoy giving back to their local community where they can see their efforts making a difference near home.

Among their many contributions, Pepicelli’s Pizza

donates 20 pizzas every month for families at Children’s Hospital of Richmond through Connor’s Heroes Foundation, an organization helping children and families during cancer treatment.

Lisa, whose brother was born without a right ventricle in his heart, spent a lot of time in Children’s Hospital as a child, and understood that eating a decent meal at the end of the day was something most families in that situation rarely enjoy. Her father started a similar foundation in the 1980s after dealing with his son’s health issues.

The family also is heavily involved in the CJ Thumbs Up Foundation, an organization providing assistance to families of children with chronic or life threatening illnesses. They raise their own chickens and donate hundreds of eggs to area food banks. They also have contributed to the Hanover Humane Society, Hanover Safe Place, Relay for Life, Shop with a Cop, the Rockville and Beaverdam little leagues and countless others.

Superintendent to speak to HCPS Class of 2017

By Melody Kinser Managing Editor ASHLAND – Dr. Michael Gill, superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools, will be the keynote speaker when members of the Class of 2017 accept their diplomas on Saturday, June 17, at the E.J. Wade Arena at the VCU Stuart Siegel Center at 1200 W. Broad St. in Richmond.

The schedule of commencement ceremonies is as follows: 8:30 a.m. – Lee-Davis High School.

12 p.m. – Hanover High School.

3:30 p.m. – Patrick Henry High School.

7 p.m. Atlee High School.

Ashland man killed in crash ASHLAND – A 19-year-old Ashland man was killed Thursday morning in a single-vehicle crash in the 17000 block of Washington Highway.

Sgt. James R. Cooper of the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office said Erid Javier Rivas Hernandez was pronounced dead

at the scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Hernandez, driving a 2012 Nissan four-door sedan, was traveling south when the vehicle ran off the right shoulder and struck a tree.

Investigators, who arrived at the scene

around 7:48 a.m., continue to collect information to determine the circumstances of the incident.

“We extend our sincerest condolences to the Mr. Hernandez’s family during this difficult time,” Cooper said, speaking on behalf of Col. David R. Hines, sheriff.

Smart Beginnings reps explain coalition’s role

By Logan Barry for The Hanover Local ASHLAND -- Working together to ensure that children enter school healthy, well-cared for, and ready to succeed in their education, work and in life is the objective of an ongoing coalition taking place in the Richmond metropolitan region, and across the commonwealth.

Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond is a regional coalition of public and private organizations, businesses and citizens who are working together to ensure successful and healthy early childhood development in the area.

Rich Schultz, executive director of the organization, along with Monica Callahan, the director of outreach and development, attended last week’s regular meeting of Ashland Town Council to talk about their efforts in Hanover County.

“Our partnership is with Hanover County Public Schools and your schools here in Ashland fall under the Hanover County public school system,” Callahan said during the Tuesday, May 16, meeting.

In explaining why early childhood development is so important, Callahan said, “Because children are our future, everything about that 0 to 5 time-frame is about learning and exploring, and becoming the little people that will eventually turn into our future leaders.”

She pointed out how, for that reason, ensuring that kids have a successful and healthy early childhood is truly an investment to our society.

In addition, she said that investing in our children early on is especially important because their brains are constantly learning.

school behind, and, usually, they end up staying behind. She said that this usually results in the negative things our society currently is seeing such as an increase in dropout rates, teen pregnancies and crime; saying that these are ripple effects.

Smart Beginnings is operating in 17 different communities across Virginia, creating a statewide network of initiatives that are supported by the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation.

Acknowledging that this is truly the region’s plan, Schultz thanked Ashland council members for their support.

“Thank you for your partnership as well, because you all have been champions of this work and have been partners with us, so we thank you for that,” he said.

Also attending the May 16 council meeting was Frankie Butler, chair of the Hanover County cabinet of the regional Business Council of ChamberRVA. Callahan said Butler supports this plan for early-learners and school readiness “because it’s a business case; it is more than just a parent’s issue. It’s a current workforce issue and a future workforce issue – so we thank him for being here and being a part of our presentation here tonight.”

Butler also is co-owner and a managing partner of True North Advisors, LLC, a company based

in Glen Allen that offers financial solutions to its clients.

Also during the May 16 regular meeting, Town Manager Joshua Farrar addressed Council regarding dark fiber opportunities pertaining to the town’s economic development and quality of life.

There is an exponential increase in regards to the flow of data being used in our society.

Unfathomable five years ago, Farrar said today we are using terabytes of data, and that we are even starting to get into the petabyte range.

He said he didn’t think people quite understand the amount of data that is going out and being used on a day-by-day basis. The point is that there is a ton of data being used, and local communities need something that can transfer that data.

“That pushes us to maybe need an infrastructure that can handle a little more than what’s out there right now,” Farrar said.

In recent years, he explained that the town discovered dark fiber that is sitting right at the Exit 92 interchange on Interstate 95.

Dark fiber is fiber-optic cable infrastructure that is currently in place but is not being used.

Optical fibers make up these fiber-optic cables that convey information using light pulses.

that send data, but they have the capability to do so.

The dark fiber that is sitting at a node at Exit 92 is owned by a company called SummitIG. They have a line that travels from the Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia area all the way down to the state capital, and now it’s even starting to continue even farther South.

He said that the plan, if the funding is available and other obstacles don’t stand in the way, would be to drag that dark fiber cable from where it currently sits on I-95 to Ashland Town Hall, and the hope then would be to extend it to the Holland Tract.

The preferred method would be to do this via underground, but he said that using existing poles can be an alternative.

One of the possible hurdles they may experience that could hinder the process are tremendous efforts by members in the Virginia General Assembly that are trying to prevent governments in local communities in the state from doing anything like this.

“That got shot down this year, but I would say that it will be reintroduced in the coming year, [so] we always have to keep that eye for what’s happening in Richmond – because if we do this and they adopt that legislation we will have to change course,” said the town manager.

He added that the legislation prohibits internet utilities, which he said wasn’t what they were looking to do because they were looking for infrastructure, but acknowledged that they are starting to get close to that fine border.

“I think there are still benefits to having it, but [that legislation] could certainly change the conversation, and I want you to know all of the hurdles that may be put in front of you before you say, ‘Josh, go ahead and take the next step’,” he told council members.

Author visits Gandy Elementary School Steven K. Smith, author of The Virginia Mysteries series, recently visited fourth and fifth graders at all 14 elementary schools in Hanover County. The books all take place at historical venues in the Richmond area. Students read one of the books in the series, “Mystery on Church Hill”, for the 2017 Reading Olympics. Prior to Smith’s visit, librarians blended information about historical events and locations from the books into their instruction. They also used maps from Richmond Region Tourism so that students could find the various locations. The students have challenged Smith to write about a historic location in Hanover next. JFK’s law enforcement designation remains

T

he room was filled with a who’s who of regional leaders gathered to pay tribute to law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice while in the line

of duty.

Col. David R. Hines, sheriff of Hanover County, hosted the 27th Annual Memorial Breakfast last Wednesday morning at VFW Post 9808 in Mechanicsville.

On Oct. 1, 1962, President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day. The recognition had been passed by the United States Congress exactly a year before. In addition to the bill, JFK also signed a proclamation. He also declared the week that May 15 falls in as Police Week.

Hines told the group that “It is the best time to be in law enforcement if you’re doing it right.”

Virginia Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Brian J. Moran was the keynote speaker. He talked about the “brotherhood and sis-

terhood of law enforcement,” as had been addressed

by President Kennedy.

REV. JIMMIE L. FOUNTAIN The Rev. Jimmie L. Fountain departed this life May 6, 2017, at St. Mary’s Hospitalin Henrico, surrounded by his family and friends.

Jimmie was born on January 4, 1942, to FOUNTAIN Mamie Lee James and Edward Fountain.

He was raised by his grandparents, William and Cora James. Jimmie was one of five sons born to his parents and he was predeceased by three of his brothers: Clarence, Charles, and James. In his youth, Jimmie received his formal education in the Hanover County Public Schools and later attended Virginia Union School of Theology. Jimmie was baptized and joined the Bethany Baptist Church in Montpelier at an early age. In later years, he rededicated his life to Christ, with a mind to work out his soul’s salvation.

Throughout the years, Jimmie was very active in the church, serving in various capacities to include Usher Board, Male Chorus, Deacons’ Ministry, Department of Christian Education, and Sunday School teacher. In every capacity he served with commitment, gratitude and pride because he loved the Lord. Under the direction of the Holy Spirit, Jimmie preached his initial sermon on May 29, 2011, and received his ministerial license to preach the word of God. As his health began to decline he was unable to act in all capacities, but even in ill health, he attended worship services when he could. On May 15, 1964, Jimmie was united in holy matrimony to the for-

mer Gertrude Henderson.

God blessed them with four children: Cynthia (deceased), Beth (Bonnie), Thomas and Princess. He was a loving and devoted husband and father.

He was a hard and dedicated worker who was committed to providing for his family.

For a number of years, Jimmie worked for Holly Farms, currently Tyson’s Poultry in Glen Allen, and was later employed

by Union Camp Corp., currently International Paper Industry in Richmond. In 2004, he retired from International Paper after 36 years of employment. Following his retirement, he secured a part-time position with Hanover County Public Schools, in addition to he and his wife becoming foster parents, impacting the lives of numerous youth who resided in their home. Jimmie was a loving and devoted follower of Christ, who was committed to

developing and strengthening his personal relationship with the Lord. He was determined to share the word everywhere he went and with everyone he met. He wanted others to know Christ through him. To cherish his loving memories are his loving and devoted wife of 53 years, Gertrude; two daughters, Bonnie Jackson (Wesley) and Princess Tunstall; a son Thomas Fountain; two additional daughters that he raised, Keja and Kekala Bland; a loving brother, Alvin Fountain (Mary); three additional siblings, Charles Patterson (Annette),

He also served as a global consultant in the metals industry for 25 years after retirement from Reynolds. John was a life member of the American Foundrymen’s Society, receiving the 1994 Charles Edgar Hoyt Memorial and the Joseph S. Seaman Gold Metal Award in 1995. He also received many other awards, wrote many technical articles, books and

lectured sharing his knowledge of aluminum casting. He was a Fellow of the American Society for Metals; received the NADCA Achievement Award and other awards from ASTM. He also shared his knowledge of aluminum casting by lecturing at the Norwegian Institute of Technology, at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he was a Board Member at Large of the ACRC and received the Ray Witt Award. His passion was AFS and the most cherished time of his life was spent working with Gary Ruff and Tom Prucha, two outstanding industry leaders. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at the Trinity United Methodist Church at 1072 Trinity Church Road in South Hill. plete his Master’s degree in Business Management and Administration.

Kenneth served one tour in the United States Navy after enlisting at the age of 18 years old and left the service to his country as an Electronic Technician 3rd Class in Norfolk. Kenneth was united in holy matrimony to Janie Moresi on April 16, 2011, at their home in Chesapeake. Kenneth made his home in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia until 2012, when he relocated to Quinton (New Kent County).

by Cox Communications Incorporated for over 24 years after leaving employment at Verizon Telecommunications.

He began his career with Cox Communications as a Technician II-Construction and progressed to Technician III-Construction. He later transferred to the Network side of the company, and became a Central Systems Technician, MTC Technician II and subsequently, was promoted to an MTC Technician III. Kenneth was extremely active in his community and believed in helping those less fortunate and many other accts of community service. He was an avid golfer. He served as

the Treasurer of Miracle Knight Lodge #39, Prince Hall Freemasons in Newport News.

Patriots clinch berth in regional with 3-1 win

By Jonathan Howard For the Hanover Local ASHLAND – Halifax County’s bus arrived at Friday night’s Conference 16 thirdplace softball game late.

Patrick Henry’s offense arrived right on time.

The Patriots scored three runs over the first two innings and got solid defense all night in a 3-1 victory over the Comets to earn a berth in the Region 5A North tournament.

The game started nearly an hour late because of bus problems that left Halifax stranded on the side of Route 288. Once the game began, Patrick Henry (14-4) quickly got started on offense. Autumn Slemaker drew a walk to lead off the game and was brought home by a double

After Halifax went quietly in the second inning, the Blue Comets replaced starting pitcher Carol Fears with Sid McLamb.

“It made me feel so relaxed on the mound,” said Patrick Henry pitcher Charlotte Mitchell of the offensive support. “I could just relax and pitch the game that I wanted to without having to be too careful.”

MECHANICSVILLE – When Patrick Henry met Atlee for a Conference 16 girls soccer semifinal Wednesday, a lot was at stake. The winner would clinch a berth in the Region 5A North tournament. The loser would have to play win a third-place game for the right to continue its season.

Atlee onslaught ends Patrick Henry’s season

By Andrew Spencer for the Hanover Local MECHANICSVILLE – Atlee’s and Patrick Henry’s baseball teams both lost their respective Conference 16 semifinals, so when the two teams met in a conference third-place game at Atlee Friday night, they faced the prospect of winning or watching the season from the sidelines.

The Raiders had fresher arms in its bullpen, however, and a seemingly unstoppable offense, and they used both to their advantage in a 13-3 victory over the Patriots in a game ended in the sixth inning by the mercy rule.

Atlee starter John Kish threw four complete innings, leaving with a 9-1 lead.

Atlee head coach John Corbin said the key to victory was in the direction of their focus.

“When our guys worry about themselves and not the other team, we play this type of baseball and we can beat anybody,” Corbin said.

Offensively, the Raiders put up 13 hits, including a walk-off single by Nick McMillion that drove in Cam Harris for the run that ended the game.

“The kids really swung the bats tonight. They were aggressive early and got to the starting pitcher quickly,” Corbin said.

by Chase Mills, but Mills didn’t fare much better, surrendering four runs of his own.

The Raiders got the scoring started in the first with an RBI double by Nick Carlo. Carlo squared around to bunt on the pitch, but pulled the bat back and swung away, sending the ball screaming up the middle into center field to bring Adam Jewell home from first.

Patrick Henry – with 10 hits of its own – had opportunities to score, but the Patriots were rarely able to convert. They stranded runners in scoring position the first three innings – and scored no runs. Twice, those runners were on third base, 90 feet from home, when the third out was called.

“You’ve got to create your own breaks,” said Patrick Henry head coach Sam Hart. “We just didn’t create any for ourselves tonight.”

The third inning was the real turning point for both teams. After putting the first two batters on at second and third, the Patriots watched their next three batters go down in order without getting a ball out of the infield.

When it was their turn at bat, the Raiders unloaded, batting through the order while scoring six runs on six hits.

Adam Jewell came in in relief of Kish at the beginning of the fifth inning, giving up two runs and striking out five in two innings of work.

“The whole team played really well tonight,” Corbin said.

“I was really proud of these kids.”

In the bottom of the sixth, Atlee’s Cam Harris took advantage of an error in the Patrick Henry outfield that allowed him to stretch what would have been an RBI single into a two-RBI rap that put him at third base.

Despite the outcome, Hart took solace in the fact that the core of this year’s Patriots team will return next year.

“We lose four guys to graduation,” he said. “The juniors played a lot this year and they got a lot of experience. They’ll bring that into the beginning of the season next year, so we’ll see how that shakes out for us.”

“They did as good as they could. They’re tired,” Wright said after the Atlee game. “We’ve been playing so many games these past few weeks.”

Street Parties: KOS has town partying its Ashland off

By Jim Ridolphi for The Hanover Local ASHLAND — Perfect weather, the sweet sounds of classic soul music and an idyllic setting alongside the railroad tacks can only mean one thing if you are anywhere near the Center of the Universe — the Ashland Street Party is back!

For the 14th year, Ashland’s signature concert series attracted sell-out crowds as the Kings of Swing, now known as KOS, brought their experienced brand of rhythm and blues to the kickoff event for this season.

“We always have a great crowd when KOS plays and the weather couldn’t have been any better,” said Ashland Street Parties (ASP) board member Marnie Triscari.

KOS has a loyal following of local fans, and the street party has become a fixture on the band’s schedule. The group traces its beginnings to just north of Ashland at Kings Dominion where the group formed to fill a slot at the newly opened theme park, and have

This year’s concert series has partnered with Origin Beer Lab in Ashland, which will craft and label a special ale for each of the three concerts scheduled for this year.

“They are partnering with us and crafting a special beer for each one of our events.

Another staple of the long running series is honorary emcee and local radio personality Bill Blevins. He happened upon the event the first year it was held, and has returned each year to announce the bands.

“I was living out here at the time and they asked me to come up and make some announcements, so I did,” Blevins said.

Although he doesn’t reside in Ashland now, Blevins has returned each year as honorary emcee. He explained why. “This is truly a community party,” he said. “It’s a great atmosphere and another thing I like is that people dance from the first note.”

Next on the Ashland Street Parties lineup is the Premiere Band on Aug. 19. Tickets are available in advance and doors open at 6:30 p.m.
