$1 bet turns into an exciting life filled with adventures

ONTPELIER — Four years ago when Patrick Henry High School graduate Hayden Hughes of Montpelier peddled his bicycle coast-to-coast across the continental United States, he never expected he would continue experiencing similar thrilling adventures like the one upon which he’s about to embark.

Hughes rode his bicycle from Virginia to Oregon in 2013 during his sophomore year at James Madison University (JMU) over a $1 bet with a friend, as well in part to raise awareness of a rare form of cancer called Leiomyosarcoma (LMS).

After their first bicycle trek across the U.S., Hughes took a summer off along with a good friend, J Keagy, and kayaked 1,050 miles from southwestern Virginia to the Gulf of Mexico.

SHLAND -- The Bluemont Concert Series returns to the Town of Ashland for its 12th season of outdoor evening concerts showcasing a variety of familyfocused evening performances.

This summer, the concerts will be held on the steps of Randolph-Macon’s Mary Branch Residence Hall at 204 Henry St. The season kicks off at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, with the first of five concerts, featuring The Taters.

With a $5 admission per person, $4 for Bluemont Friends and seniors, $2 for kids under 12, the concert is described as “one of the best deals around.”

Proceeds go to support Bluemont’s Artist-in-Education Program in area schools.

Concert-goers are invited to bring a lawn chair or a blanket to sit on, and a picnic to enjoy before the show.

As at all Bluemont concerts, no pets, alcohol or smoking are allowed. In the event of bad weather, the concerts will be held indoors at the Randolph-Macon College Blackwell Auditorium.

Everyone is welcome at these family

oriented concerts.

According to organizers, “The Taters provide a truly entertaining mix of classic rock, pop, country, skiffle, and oldtime country rockabilly.”

Craig Evans and Brad Tucker started singing together over two decades ago and have developed a wide repertoire, including songs by Roy Orbison, the Everly Brothers, Beatles, Nick Lowe, along with some originals, accompanying themselves on acoustic guitar, bass and drums.

The Taters, originally the Burnt Taters, are a Bluemont favorite.

Presented by Bluemont, this popular concert series is made possible by a successful public/private partnership, including the Town of Ashland, the Hanover Arts and Activities Center, Randolph-Macon College, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts, Wells Fargo Advisors, Loudoun Mutual Insurance Company, The Gerald and Paula McNichols Family Foundation, Middleburg Bank, Dominion Foundation, Target, and Walmart.

Bluemont relies on more than 1,200 volunteers each summer to ensure that performances go smoothly, and on the

support of local businesses and community organizations.

‘The Ice Cream Race’ chills in Hanover MECHANICSVILLE — What better way to finish out the summer than partaking in The Ice Cream Race?

The Ice Cream Race is an all-ages 5K (3.1-mile) event that encourages participants to fight their way through a unique course by running through Whipped Cream-like Foam, zooming down the Chocolate Syrup Water Slide, and trudging through the Banana Peel Pit. You will be chased by all of your favorite toppings throughout the course.

Post 175 benefit breakfast to be held July 30 Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE — American Legion Post 175 will sponsor a Benefit Breakfast from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday, July 30, in the Main Hall of the Post located at 8700 Bell Creek Drive in Mechanicsville.

Diners may choose from a hearty buffet, which will include scrambled eggs, plain or blueberry pancakes, biscuits, sausage gravy, bacon, breakfast potatoes, grits, fried apples, coffee, tea and juice.

The cost is $8 per person.

Proceeds will go toward the many projects American Legion has for veterans and the youth of the community.

Veteran programs include: meals and financial assistance for needy veterans, veteran assistance to register for VA benefits they have earned and bi-weekly nutrition classes held at the Post by the Veteran’s Administration.

Youth programs include Boy’s State, Girl’s State, American Legion Baseball, JROTC sponsorships, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Oratorical Contests, Essay Contests, and Junior Law Cadet program.

The Post 175 Honor Guard is now in high demand as part of all patriotic municipal ceremonies in addition to public school ceremonies and ceremonies at veteran funerals.

Hughes has since graduated from JMU, and is eager to fulfill his dreams.

Now, the pair are preparing for their next expedition: riding their bicycles from Lisbon, Portugal, on the Atlantic Ocean to Istanbul, Turkey, on the side of the Bosporus Strait in Asia.

They also will be travelling through Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina. Hughes said there were two additional countries located near Turkey that they may possibly decide to visit.

“I haven’t decided which countries I want to explore and the decision could involve changing political conditions in Eastern Europe,” Hughes said.

Lots of people enjoy travelling and seeing new places, Hughes said he just likes to approach his travels at a different angle.

“My dad is my hero and his traveling stories from when he was younger definitely motivate me. I really want to see new places and nothing gives me the

satisfaction of going far without a motor,” Hughes said.

“Plus, my good friend Carl keeps making me dollar bets that I won’t finish these trips, so I’ve got a lot to prove.”

He said one of the biggest things he’s looking forward to was completing the original Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain.

“I look forward to the trip more than anything to get to do another trip with J Keagy who is more of a brother than a friend now. He came for the kayaking and longboarding,” Hughes said.

Keagy, from Chantilly, also attends JMU, said if he were to go to Europe before college, he would probably

imagine himself going to see the sights, stay in hotels, and have everything planned.

“Instead of the ready, fire, aim approach we generally like to take,” Keagy said.

Like Hughes, Keagy has an adventurous spirit and has always had a desire for the outdoors and travelling.

“I have always had a hidden love for the outdoors and adventure, even as a young kid, but it really didn’t come out until I met Hayden,” said Keagy, referring to how the two met during their time in Harrisonburg.

“He was the catalyst I needed that broke me out of my shell and helped

me find the thing I enjoy the most in life: long trips to new places with good friends.”

Hughes said had no idea what route they will follow, but he does expect for them to be peddling a bare minimum of 2,500 miles.

“With all the detours, I wouldn’t be surprised if we hit 4,000,” Hughes said.

What about survival? Hughes and Keagy will be sleeping in hammocks and tents, depending on the weather conditions.

“We’ll just be eating whatever looks good, depending on the countries we’re in,” Hughes said.

Not surprising, Hughes said he has met a lot of different people throughout his escapades around the world — and they also enjoy traveling.

“I have a lot of friends that travel frequently so I’m guessing at least a couple will want to meet me, in addition to a buddy from college that lives in Lisbon,” Hughes said.

Preparing to take off on such a long journey on a bicycle across foreign continents, especially with the current political conditions might make some people nervous.

Not Hughes. “Not even a little bit, I’m just excited,” he said.

Unusual dilemma: How to help someone without causing any embarrassment

A

recent visit to a medical facility has left this writer in a state of unease due to an incident that I wish I had handled differently.

In all honesty, I didn’t get involved at all.

As the day progressed, however, I knew I should have done something to help.

There was a woman with a child in her arms and other children with her requesting care but she was in arrears on payments. The discussion — though pleasant in nature — was overheard as it continued. She needed to make a payment and obviously had no means to do so.

I kept thinking, “How can I help?” “What can I do?” I don’t want to embarrass her or make her feel uncomfortable. But, in looking back, I should have discreetly offered some financial relief.

No, I’m not wealthy — but I am blessed to have a good job and benefits.

How I regret not offering $20 or $50 to help the woman and her family. I imagine a payment would have enabled her to proceed toward service.

That incident still weighs heavy on my heart. Next time I’m going with instinct. The woman didn’t know me and I didn’t know her — but I could have helped her. There won’t be a second thought if I find myself in a similar position. So, I must ask: What would you do?

Well, it’s official — senior status is getting closer On Monday, yours truly reached a milestone — the Big 6-0. Yep, six decades. I arrived in 1956, the year of “the” Chevrolet. My parents had a red one. But, as usual, I digress. Went to the movies the other day and asked what age was senior status. OK, it’s 62 there. So why did AARP start chasing me when I was 47 or 48? (For the record, I am a member.) Anyway, the bucket list continues to grow. And, Lord willing, I’ll accomplish everything before it’s time to sit on the porch in a rocking chair and reminisce. Actually, that sounds pretty good now.

Summer Camp still packs them in

S

ummer camp is an American tradition that has withstood the test of time while other hot weather activities have passed by the wayside.

Back in the 1950s and 1960s, local lake venues were the norm, and neighborhood pools were reserved for the more exclusive sections of town. Now, most of the lake sites along Jefferson Davis Turnpike are only large holes in the ground.

Not so with summer camps.

Admittedly, some of them are not the sprawling complexes in acres of wooded serenity, but the idea of kids packing off and heading to camp is alive and well in America.

It’s one of the few remaining traditions with which almost all of us can still relate.

I remember the days before camp as dreaded, and the thought of leaving

home for two weeks was something I just couldn’t get excited about. But, once I was on the bus headed east down Route 5, my attitude improved and I joined a group of other youngsters in full excitement mode as we neared what was then Camp Richmond, later Camp Weyanoke.

The whole experience was a big deal that began with my grandmother carefully stitching my name labels in each of my clothes, even the unmentionables.

My mother checked items off a long list provided by the YMCA-based camp. By the final day before camp, everything was done — packed neatly in a duffle bag.

The bus, a real one with big leather seats and a shiny silver exterior, waited at the Y on Franklin Street, maybe the only location at that time. It meandered down a then slow-paced Main Street and finally broke into the country as we hit Varina. We gazed back at

the city for a last glance near Osborne Turnpike, to this day one of the best views of the city available especially at sunset.

Our arrival at camp was almost overwhelming with a flurry of activity, including, cabin assignments, canteen accounts and maybe time to sneak a peek at that lake that would be the center of your life for the next two weeks.

Older campers were housed in Army-style tents that were set up on wooden decks. The younger campers, including me, would stand and marvel at the mosquito-netted quarters that resembled real soldier accommodations. We couldn’t wait until we were old enough to move from the enclosed log cabins to the big boy tents.

With each passing day, the time slipped by at a quicker pace. We made elaborate metal bracelets in arts and crafts, strung small beads together to make headbands, fired rifles (.22 calisee CAMP, pg. 7

Thank you for being the officer that chased that drunk driver for miles and miles, for being the officer that followed the suspicious man in my neighborhood who tried to break in my house, for being the officer that saw a man on the edge of a bridge thinking about suicide and pulled over to talk to him down and convince him to think twice, for being the officer that helped the little boy on the south side with his homework, and, finally, for being the officer that works every day to serve my community.

Lastly, thank you for doing everything you officers do for members of your community.

It wasn’t boot camp, but we had survived, and enjoyed, two weeks in the woods.

Years later, my memories at camp are some of the most vivid of my summer recollections. I remember the names, the faces and the place that exists no more.

Sadly, Camp Richmond closed years ago and the beautiful site is now the VCU Rice Center, a phenomenal use of the old property. Sadly, the lake, the cabins, the old mess hall . . .

All gone.

But, don’t dismay. There’s a brand group of campers heading off their summer ready to make their memories, explore their possibilities and enjoy the good old-fashioned fun that only camp can provide.

Field trips to Jamestown and ferry rides across the James River to Hopewell broke the monotony of camp, and nighttime campfires on an island in the middle of the lake were the norm.

But the real highlight of the day was a trip to the Canteen where we carefully managed our accounts, making sure we had enough funds remaining to purchase a highly sought after Camp Richmond sweatshirt for the trip home. We wore them year-round with a sense of pride and a hint of accomplishment.

Deborah R. “Debbie” Coles, 56, of Beaverdam, departed this life July 13, 2016, at St. Mary’s Hospital after a long illness.

She was born September 17, 1959, a daughter of the late Richard S. and Virginia Coles. She attended Hanover County Public Schools. At an early age, she joined Union Baptist Church.

She was an employee of Tyson Foods for 28 years until her health began to fail. Debbie was a die-hard Washington Redskins fan. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Emily Coles and Thelma Waller, and one brother, COLES Chester Jackson. She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Antjuan Fisher of Richmond; one daughter, LaGreasha Gentry (Roger) of Beaverdam; two grandchildren, Saniyyah and Se’Quean; two sisters, Annie Waller (Charles) of Spotsylvania and Josey Briley (Frank) of Richmond; four brothers, Richard Coles Jr. (Brenda) of Spotsylvania, Warren Coles (Loretta) of Beaverdam, Clifton Coles (Gladys) of Bumpass and Charles Coles of Ashland; four devoted friends, Gayle Jackson, Larry “Tutt” Johnson, Thomas Jackson and Stewart Houchens; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and any other relatives and friends. The Rev. Rachel Mae Downs-Lewis, 40, claimed the promise of the Resurrection on Friday, July 22, 2016, in Charlottesville. Born November 22, 1975, in Richmond, she was the daughter of Wilmer Lacy and Evelyn Donner Downs. She was preceded in death by her mother, Evelyn. Rachel aspired to study the stories of peoples and civilizations at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland from an early age. Her devotion to Greek and Roman history, art, architecture and biblical literature DOWNS-LEWIS earned her induction into Phi Beta Kappa. Upon graduation with honors in 1997, Rachel married Robert Lewis and together they moved to Durham, North Carolina, where she earned the Master of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees from The Divinity School, Duke University. Rachel and Robert jointly received the Hoyt Hickman Award for Liturgical Studies.

Rachel served as pastor of the West Buckingham Charge of the United Methodist Church before she and Robert moved to England, where both were ordained in the Methodist Church of Great Britain in 2005. Together, they served nine years in the Sheffield (Ecclesall) Methodist Circuit. Rachel’s infectious joy and boundless enthusiasm inspired and rekindled faith among the elderly, the developmentally disabled, university students and the arts community. Returning to the United States, Rachel’s ministry greatly enriched the congregation of Hinton Avenue UMC, where Robert came to serve as pastor. Rachel loved teaching, writing

Dawn Michelle “Shelley” Lemaster Jarman, born April 26, 1968, in Ashland, Kentucky, and died July 17, 2016, in Midlothian at age 48. Shelley was the child of Earl Reed Jr. of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Sandra Adkins Vance of Midlothian. Shelley was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, George A. and Lillian Adkins of Flatwoods, Kentucky. She is survived by her daughter, Cassandra Marie (Cassie) Jarman, as well as her parents. Shelley also is survived by her stepfather, Dwight D. Vance of Virginia; and her paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Turpin of St. Petersburg, Florida. Shelley was a graduate of Russell High JARMAN School in Russell, Kentucky. (1978). She also attended the University of Kentucky, Ohio University and ultimately graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond. Shelley then began her career as an elementary school teacher in Richmond City, Spotsylvania County and Bowling Green public schools. Shelley loved attending church, going to the beach, scrapbooking and travelling. Due to Shelley’s request there will be no funeral services, but celebrations of her life are planned in Greenup County, Kentucky, and Midlothian at later dates. Post 175 sweeps path clear to district title

By Dylan Garner Richmond Times-Dispatch COLONIAL HEIGHTS – What better way to celebrate a fourth championship in five years than with a breakfast of champions?

No, it’s not Wheaties for Mechanicsville Post 175. It was a box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch the team celebrated with after its American Legion District 11 championship Thursday at Shepherd Stadium.

Post 175 defeated South Richmond Post 137 16-6 for the district title and advance to next week’s state tournament in Danville.

The cereal — CTC, to the players — is brought out during games when Post 175 gets a big hit or starts a rally. With a 20-hit barrage Thursday, there were plenty of opportunities for some cereal.

“This group is all about having fun and staying loose, and that’s why I feel like we were successful,” said co-manager Tyler Kane.

The first runs came in the second inning, and a two-out hit from Aaron Saunders was the jumping-off point for Post 175. He rocketed a pitch back to Post 137 pitcher Kyle Hasforth that ricocheted off his glove and found a hole in the outfield, scoring two runs. An RBI double capped off the inning, giving Post 175 a 4-0 lead.

Mechanicsville Post 175’s Elliott Sledd makes contact in Post 175’s 11-9 victory over South Richmond Post 137 in the winners’ bracket final of the American Legion District 11 tournament at Hanover High School Tuesday.

Post 175 held an 8-1 lead entering the top of the fifth, but Post 137 used some patience to shave the deficit.

Jonathan Triesler and Bryan Miltenberger opened the inning with hits, and Rash drew a walk to load the bases. Post 137 brought in the base runners one by one on walks and singles.

The rally forced a pitching change and resulted in four runs, but Post 137 left the bases loaded — which included the

potential tying run — to end the inning.

“We scored four that inning, we really needed to score like eight,” said Post 137 manager Jack Horner, whose team reached the final by beat Post 284B 5-1 earlier in the day. “We really didn’t get enough runs that inning.”

The teams traded blows until the end, but Post 175 continued scoring until a long fly ball from Brandon Crosby

ended the game with the 10-run slaughter rule.

William Strong led Post 175’s attack with four hits, including two doubles and four RBIs. Saunders filled up the scorecard with five hits, three runs, two RBIs, a walk and a stolen base.

Post 175 scored in every inning except the first.

“We always preach approach,” Kane said. “We want our guys to think middle of the field. … When you do that,

you really force teams to make plays.”

The Cinnamon Toast Crunch tradition began at last year’s state tournament. The boys from Post 175 will be hungry for some more cereal, as well as a possible state title.

“We’re going to cherish this championship and try to represent District 11 at the state tournament,” Kane said.

King’s Charter 1115 Chestnut Oaks 900 MECHANICSVILLE – After dropping its first three meets, the King’s Charter Tidal Waves closed out the season with their third straight victory to close out the regular season Tuesday with a 3-3 record.

As the season comes to an end, it also brings to an end the GRAL career of King’s Charter head coach Taylor Moyer.

Moyer, who began swimming for the team when she was 4 years old, started coaching for the Tidal Waves at age 15 and has been head coach for the team the past three years, embarks on a new adventure studying to become a radiology technologist at J. Sargent Reynolds Community College.

She said it is always hard to leave the kids behind when the season comes to an end.

It’s worse this time because she won’t be able to come back to coach next summer.

But the focus is on Champs, and Moyer said the Tidal Waves are excited. King’s Charter has 31 Champs qualifiers, but Moyer said four of those will be attending larger meets this weekend.

Wyndham at Burkwood Swim and Racquet Club Tuesday night.

Burkwood head coach Karen Seeber said Wyndham’s numbers were down because a number of their swimmers left during a storm delay at the beginning of the evening.

The Buccaneers finish their season at 5-1.

“We’re excited … we had a good season, especially being in [the GRAL’s] top division,” Seeber said.

The team is now looking forward to Champs this weekend.

“We’ve got some first-timers going over there [to SwimRVA],” Seeber said. “We’re going to go over on Wednesday. We’re going to introduce them to the pool. … It’s a little overwhelming when it’s your first time.”

Burkwood finished the regular season with 62 individual qualifiers – 27 relays – for Champs.

Burkwood finished with eight quad winners: Megan Davis, Colin Eliason, Nathaniel Eliason, Jordan Fox, Victoria Lazo de la Vega, Matthew Martin, Chandler Rose and Ashley Zicafoose. Emphasis is placed on fundamental development, shooting, offensive moves, defense, rebounding, team play, and more.

ASHLAND- Last Tuesday was the final meet of the season for the Ashland Barracudas, but for a few Barracudas this meet was the end of an era.

Although other seniors had already been honored at previous meets, four seniors were honored before the Barracudas went into action against Church Run. “These kids were a very good class,” said Ashland head coach Kevin Trent. “From the perspective of knowing the kids and the leadership they provide, we will miss them definitely.”

Haley Lavach swam for the program for nine years and will be attending Mary Washington in the fall. Jamie Doyle and Allyson Flinn both put in 10 years with the Barracudas.

Doyle will be attending VCU and Flinn will be attending the University of Maryland.

The final senior to be recognized was Johnny Edelman who swam 13 years for the program and will be attending James Madison in the fall. All four seniors graduated from Patrick Henry High School in June.

“I’ve been on the team for 10 years so I’ve seen nine years’ worth of seniors get to go up on the block and do their senior night thing,” said Flinn. “It was really cool to get to that point.”

The night was full also of action as the team was preparing for Champs this weekend.

In 2004, Stacey Spear made her own dream a reality. Desiring more time at home with her elementary aged sons but still wanting to work, do something she loved, and set her own hours, Stacey left her banking career. S & S Painting, LLC of Mechanicsville, Virginia, was born.

In the beginning, Stacey and her partner Shannon tackled small painting projects—one or two rooms. Shannon moved, and Stacey partnered with another mom and friend, Valerie. Most of the customers were members of Stacey’s church home, Shady Grove United Methodist, but as word of mouth spread of their skill, strong work ethic and friendliness, customers started wanting them in the Fan, Bon Air and Short Pump. So, in 2009, Stacey and Valerie realized growth necessitated change; S & S hired its first employee.

Today, S & S employs an office manager and five painters; all but one employee is also a mom.

Like Stacey, these women wanted to work but still be home with their children when school was not in session. Stacey’s business model allows other women to accomplish their goals. Stacey no longer operates out of her blue Yukon; the company now has two vans and a shop located in Mechanicsville. While the primary service provided is still interior painting, additional services now offered include wallpaper removal, minor drywall repair, spraying cabinetry, and chalk painting furniture.

With success comes notoriety. In 2011, S & S Painting LLC received national recognition when it was selected for Style Network’s “Clean House” program. The 2011 crew were challenged with the task of painting a 2,800 square foot home in Bon Air in less than 24 hours.

In 2014, S & S was voted Favorite Painter in R-Home Magazine’s Reader Survey. Due to her hard work and dedication, Stacey became the president of the Richmond Chapter of the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America organization in 2015. S & S Painting, LLC is a Mechanicsville based company; its roots are here.
