ONTPELIER — Four years ago when Patrick Henry High School graduate Hayden Hughes of Montpelier peddled his bicycle coast-to-coast across the continental United States, he never expected he would continue experiencing similar thrilling adventures like the one upon which he’s about to embark. Hughes rode his bicycle from Virginia to Oregon in 2013 during his sophomore year at James Madison University (JMU) over a $1 bet with a friend, as well in part to raise awareness of a rare form of cancer called Leiomyosarcoma (LMS). After their first bicycle trek across the U.S., Hughes took a summer off along with a good friend, J Keagy, and kayaked 1,050 miles from southwestern Virginia to the Gulf of Mexico.
