Every week, another child is diagnosed with cancer in Central Virginia.

Last summer, Caroline Morris was one of them. Diagnosed in June 2015 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common type of childhood cancer, Caroline has been receiving treatment at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR) ever since.

“It’s not my hair that makes my beauty,” said Caroline, who lost her hair as a chemotherapy side effect, “it’s my heart.” These are just a few of the inspiring words one might hear from 6-year-old Caroline, who has remained optimistic and cheerful during a difficult year.

Now in the maintenance phase of her cancer treatment, Caroline only requires monthly visits to CHoR, which means she can spend more time doing the things she loves most: playing outside, spending time with her two older siblings and filming epi-

sodes of “Caroline’s Kitchen,” her at-home cooking show.

Currently, Caroline is busy figuring out a special lemon recipe to feature on the show and at her Anthem LemonAid stand this July.

Sponsored by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Anthem LemonAid is Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ signature summer event and has been helping kids with cancer since 2001.

Now in its 15th year, the event is celebrating its milestone anniversary with a two-year, $250,000 commitment to the Infusion Center in CHoR’s Hematology and Oncology Clinic, where children with cancer receive the chemotherapy, blood transfusions, and immune system boosting infusions they need.

Whether you’re a family, business or community organization, you can make a big difference for local kids with cancer by setting up a lemonade stand the weekend of July 15-17. It’s free to participate and supplies are provided. Each participant is given lemonade mix, cups, a pitcher, a banner, stickers and sunglasses.

Stands can be hosted at the retail location of one of the event partners or at a place of participants’ choosing, like a local business, front yard, or neighborhood pool.

Participants will stir up and distribute cups of lemonade in exchange for donations and 100% of all funds raised will support the $250,000 goal.

RICHMOND — Virginia Credit Union has awarded $2,500 scholarships to six Hanover County students through its Dorothy J. Hall Memorial Scholarship Program.

The students were selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, community service, extracurricular activities, an essay, and work to help defray the cost of education.

Hanover supervisors address Ashland’s motel problem

A

SHLAND — Recent ordinance changes regarding extended motel stays in Ashland represent the first step in a strategic plan to address an ongoing problem with long-term residents residing in 14 Ashland motels adjacent to Interstate 95.

Coupled with the recent closing of the Apple Garden Inn by the Virginia Health Department, the changes equate to a situation where a number of long-term residents have no place to live.

Community- and faithbased groups in Ashland have attempted to fill the void in the period before the new ordinance takes effect July 1.

Faye Prichard, Ashland representative on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, asked fellow boardmembers to allocate a one-time $10,000 payment for Ashland Open Door, a group founded to

assist families with children who are affected by the closing and the new ordinance requirements.

The ultimate goal, according to Prichard, is to locate full-time housing for these residents, and begin to address a problem that has plagued the interchange at Interstate 95 for more than a decade.

Since the Apple Garden closed, police calls have decreased 25 percent in Ashland, and Prichard said long-term solutions could further benefit the area’s economic development and public safety issues Prichard said the plight of the children living in these motel settings is heartbreaking. “We have children who are very young, school-aged, who are living next door to folks who are perhaps doing a number of illegal activities, including a very large population of sex offenders living in those motels,” she said.

Bob Delille formed Ashland Open Door to assist families with children in finding permanent housing in the form of rental homes and apartments after Ashland’s Town Council passed ordinances that restrict long-term stays at local motels last year.

Some residents have lived in the motels for over 10 years according to Prichard, and now find themselves searching for alternative housing.

Delille rallied a number of businesses and community organizations to come to the aid of these displaced families. Of the 21 families with children displaced when Apple Garden closed, Ashland Open Door has placed seven of them in permanent housing.

He told the supervisors that the group has hired a case worker to assist families in distress and is actively seeking housing for the affected families.

Prichard asked her fellow board members to match a $10,000 pledge by the Town of Ashland to assist Ashland Open Door in its efforts.

Delille acknowledged the good work of local churches and community groups who have supplied money, clothes and support services to these residents, but said the problem still exists.

“With all the efforts to help these folks with their basic needs, they are still there. Those motels are still full with people who should not be there particularly in regard to children.

That’s what we are focused on,” Delille said.

Supervisor Canova Peterson, Mechanicsville District, said he personally supported the group’s efforts, but could not support supplying taxpayer money for the project.

He expressed confidence that local civic organizations would step up and help, but felt uneasy using taxpayer funds to help the affected residents.

“I think your heart is in the right place, but, unfortunately, your hands are reaching the

wrong pockets,” Peterson said.

“For every nonprofit we contribute to here — no matter how worthy the cause — we first have to take the funds from our citizens and taxpayers’ pockets.”

Peterson said that’s tantamount to deciding what charities citizens will support.

“I don’t believe that’s the way government is supposed to operate.”

Scott Wyatt and Sean Davis, Cold Harbor and Henry Districts, also said they could not support the motion for a variety of reasons, but both applauded the efforts of Ashland Open Door.

“I think, in this case, it’s a public safety issue,” said Wayne Hazzard, South Anna District.

“I don’t think this a whole lot different from funding the fire department or the sheriff ’s office or anything else. It’s a one-time thing with public safety in mind,” he said in voicing his support.

The board vote was level when chair Aubrey Stanley, Beaverdam District, cast the deciding vote in favor of the appropriation.

Fred found joy and peace in his church’s Life Group, where his spiritual walk with Christ continued to mature. Fred is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Kim Lauterbach Dye. Fred was a devoted son to his mother, Betty Snavely Dye of Abingdon. He was preceded in death by his father, the Reverend Lewis Dye. Fred had the strongest of bonds with and devotion to his twin sis-

ter, Freda Pickle, along with a special friendship with his brother-in-law, Tim Pickle, Richmond. Fred often spoke of his great joy of being a stepdad to his stepchildren, Jacob, Josh and Claire DeVor and “Papaw” to his grandchildren, Kennedy, Madelyn, Frasier and Nolan Frederick. Fred is survived by his father-in-law and close friend, Wayne, and motherin-Law, Edna Lauterbach. He was cherished by his sister-inlaw, Kristen Seay, who tenderly cared for his physical wellbeing during his decline in the past few months. His sisterin-law, Kay Henry (Tim), provided loving assistance during his illness. Fred graduated from J. Sargeant Reynolds as an Optician. He was employed by the Virginia Eye Institute as a medical photographer specializing in glaucoma diagnostics. He made many lasting friendships there. The family is especially grateful to Mimi Williams and Barry Green for their care and friendship during Fred’s illness. Fred was creative and had numerous hobbies which all involved working with his hands or music.

He enjoyed making baskets, wood carving, furniture making and fishing. Fred loved to sing. He especially enjoyed listening to Bluegrass music.

Fred’s personal mission in life was defined by his favorite Bible verse -- “Aspire to lead a quiet life, to work with your hands so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders.” Thessalonians 4:11-12.

The family remembered and honored Fred’s life with funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2016, at the Cool Spring Baptist Church. A private burial followed in Gethsemane Church of Christ in Mechanicsville.

ory to Cullather Brain Tumor Quality of Life Center at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond.

She had been an active member of Springfield Christian Church and worked in the legal and banking industries for most of her life. This is the big week — let’s celebrate tomatoes

W

ith fingers crossed for good weather, and with the knowledge that the 2016 Hanover Tomato Festival is just days away, there’s a childlike excitement (no matter what your age) for the fun, food, entertainment and camaraderie of “the event” in Mechanicsville.

A few weeks ago, the Town of Ashland and Randolph-Macon College joined forces with the Ashland Strawberry Faire Committee to once again fill the streets around the school with an outstanding day. You can expect the same on Saturday, July 9, at Pole Green Park.

The Hanover Tomato Festival runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — and there is literally something for everybody. (In the “I should avoid it category” is the funnel cake.) Of course, I’ll be getting some of those famous Robby Dodd Hanover Tomatoes for my mother. I’ve timed some vacation days in the past to take “our” tomato to friends in my hometown. Yes, they quickly became a favorite there too.

The Hanover Tomato Festival Committee, with the help of the Hanover County Parks and Recreation Department, continues to expand with activities. Once again, the festival will start with the Papa John’s 4K and Uncookoff competition. So, put on your running shoes and then go try the contestants’ entries in the Uncookoff. The run starts at 6 and the uncookoff will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.

As usual, the Tomato Festival raises funds for the Black Creek Volunteer Fire Department. I always think of the late Oscar Watson who was always so gracious and helpful. He was able to see a small event continue to grow under his leadership.

Advice to grads: Live, live, live

To recent graduates: After endless pomp and ceremony, a seemingly infinite stream of parties and celebrations and a more than abundant amount of well intentioned advice for the future, I’ve decided to add my two cents on life after high school.

Be advised that you have received ample warning, my words of wisdom are no more -- and probably less - prolific than the meaningful words you’ve heard from others. Do what your parents tell you, and please consider their advice much more valuable than mine.

When I graduated from high school, there was an emerging philosophy that putting pressure on high school graduates was counter-productive, and selecting a career path could wait, sidelined for more important self-discovery.

“You have to give them time to find themselves,” some disgruntled parent admitted.

Back in those days, many graduates opted for some time off and a chance to discover the country they’d heard so much about. Taking off and heading to California in a well-decorated VW van almost seemed normal.

One of my closest friends packed a backpack and a bicycle and headed to Europe once he received his diploma. Cycling across Europe, he picked grapes in France and lived in a cave in the Greek Isles.

He often told me the knowledge he gained in those short months of freedom from the norm supplied more wisdom than any education he’d experienced.

About that time, a movie called “Endless Summer” provided the impetus for many more wandering souls to

chase the sun on beaches in countries across the planet.

The film followed a group of surfers as they chased the summer season and searched for the perfect wave.

I wound up on a trip to Canada with two friends after my graduation, and discovered that speaking more than one language can be beneficial.

Memories from that trip are fresh in my mind today, and those carefree days of travel and adventure create memories every person should experience.

Who knows what motivated kids then or now for that matter?

But, it’s become apparent to me that the need for adventure, excitement and newness still burns in many youths today.

Now, I’m not suggesting that you purchase a surfboard and head to Venezuela looking for that wave, but see ADVICE, pg. 8

Thanks to deputies for respect at funeral As a resident of Mechanicsville, I wanted to write and let the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office know how proud I was of them today and every day for their faithful service to our community.

In our busy lives I am afraid when we witness good deeds they are often left unsung, but today I witnessed an event that will forever stay in my heart and it involved Hanover County’s finest.

My husband and I were returning home after running local errands and we passed by a local funeral home. The attendance at the funeral was clearly large and just as we turned onto the street where the folks were exiting the Hanover County Sheriff’ Office kicked into gear.

We were the first car to slow for the traffic coming out of the funeral home. One of the deputies escorting the procession immediately stopped the traffic for all members of the funeral entourage to pass.

As the hearse went by, the deputy formally saluted the hearse, and, as it passed by our car, we realized a veteran was in the hearse.

As a daughter of a Korean War veteran, I would like to

thank the deputy that gave an appropriate honor when he saluted the hearse that carried the flag-draped coffin.

In this crazy busy world of ours, it is so refreshing to see something so appropriate and fitting delivered by one of our county’s finest.

I would like to personally thank the officer and the other officers in attendance for their service to our community.

Cooking demonstrations offered by Bon Secours Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE - Class-A-Roll, Bon Secour’s mobile classroom, will be at 9077 Atlee Rd., on Saturday, July 9, for two cooking demonstrations, and the public is invited to attend.

The location is the All Souls Community Garden associated with the All Souls Episcopal Church.

Class-A-Roll cooking demonstrations will begin at 10:30 and 11:15 a.m., using fresh summer foods in recipes that should appeal to families.

In addition, the Atlee Y will provide its registered dietician

with information about foods, nutrition, meal planning, and diabetes health.

Children are welcome to attend with their parents and there will be children’s games and activities while parents attend the cooking demonstrations and talk with representatives from Bon Secours, the Y, and All Souls Episcopal Church.

Now in the 5th year, the garden donates all produce to food pantries in the Mechanicsville area, including MCEF, Northside Baptist Church’s Loaves and Fishes and Hanover Evangelical Friends Church.

Supervisors lauded for helping taxpayers I hope the Hanover County Board of Supervisors reads this paper as this may be the first and only time they hear me brag on them for something they’ve done that’s having positive results for the Hanover taxpayers.

I’m talking about the lack of traffic on the roadways. I don’t know how those guys/ladies did it but thank God for small miracles.

I think it began at 7:30 a.m. Monday, June 20, as I noticed the roads were clear, no traffic and smooth sailing, all the way from Old Church to Ellerson. The roads were at least 20 mph faster with no back up on Pole Green and no long lines at red lights on U.S. 360.

Anyway, supervisors, this is the kind of supervising we want. You may want to consider working closer with Chesterfield, Richmond and Henrico counties to get all our businesses, parks and other gathering places moved into those counties.

What a great idea, all Hanoverians could overcrowd those counties by going there to shop, eat and play and afterwards come back to good ol’ Hanover’s wide open spaces to play with their grazing chickens, hum along with honey bees, and watch tomatoes grow.

Hanoverians could truly be living in Utopia -- no more crowds, no more traffic, just enjoying the quietness and serenity of the neighborhood while having a good mint julep.

What more could we ask for, knowing that our only exports are Town House chicken eggs, fresh subdivision bee’s honey and Hanover Tomatoes, all being made just

in a variety of forums, so make yours unique and inspiring and make sure it’s designed to fit the needs of one individual: you.

So, that’s my tiny tidbit of wisdom for graduates, young and old. I pre-warned you it

Access the issue in gun talks With all due respect to Pastor Justin Spradlin and his recent letter, I don’t think the country is divided between banning all guns and having everyone carry them.

That is simply a perception created by extremists who shout much louder than anyone else.

I hope reasonable people are wondering why children and mentally ill people such as Omar Mateen and Adam Lanza have easy access to high-capacity weapons that can kill 49 people and wound 53 others in a matter of minutes.

I also hope these same reasonable people will seek reasonable solutions and ignore the shouters who muddy the debate.

Ashland Juniors claim Little League title

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Ashland Little League was the first county team to claim a title in the District 5 baseball tournaments last week.

The Ashland juniors rolled to a 12-2 victory over Chesterfield in the third game of the twoteam series at Mechanicsville Little League Thursday.

Atlee Little League teams won two titles – in the 9-10 and Intermediate tournaments.

Tuckahoe Little League won the Majors tournament title.

Chesterfield Little League claiming the Big League title and Central Chesterfield claimed the Senior baseball title.

Only the 9-10 baseball title remains undecided, with just two teams – Tuckahoe American and Tuckahoe National – vying for the championship banner at the Mechanicsville Little League complex in a game or games scheduled after this edition went to press.

Ashland won its first game 6-5 on June 25 on a wild pitch that came on what would have been the fourth ball of an intentional walk to load the bases.

“I alerted our runner at third base that the [Chesterfield] pitcher is a little wild – to get ready to run,” said Ashland manager Mike Michalowicz.

“He did and scored on that.”

“He was cool as a cucumber the whole game,” Michalowicz

said. “He went the distance, with 89 pitches. I knew from the night before that he was the guy I wanted on the mound, and he took us to the promised land.”

RBI. Cannon Peebles hit a tworun single in the second inning that gave Ashland a 6-0 victory.

The future Longwood Lancer has been working on coming into his own as a starting pitching, with his time with 175 being invaluable for that experience.

“When you’re starting, you have control of the game,” he said. “Say it’s a close game and you come in to relieve, that pressure is on you. When you start, you have control.”

Mechanicsville Post 175 was all too happy to continue this trend.

Boosted by a six-run fifth inning and the dominant pitching of Tyler Morgan, Post 175 defeated Post 201 8-1 on the road.

“We strung a few hits together,” Mechanicsville assistant coach Tyler Kane said. “This team is very solid one through nine. We pride ourselves on getting the big hits when we need it and that’s really what helped us go out there and scratch a few runs that inning.”

Powhatan 201’s James Heldmann had been holding Mechanicsville relatively at bay on the mound, allowing just four hits through the first four innings.

Mechanicsville’s Hayden Moore knocked in the first run of the game for Post 175 in the top of the fourth inning.

Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 22-24 Patrick Henry High School Girls and Boys Youth Basketball Camp will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the school at 12449 W. Patrick Henry Rd. in Ashland. Saturday, Aug. 27 Anyone who attended the Hanover County Training School or the John M. Gandy High School will be celebrating their 18th Grand Ole Gandy Reunion at the VA Union University Life Learning Center from 6 to 10 p.m. at 1500 North Lombardy St. in Richmond.

Nancy Moore, a noted flower arranger and former owner of the Flower Depot in Ashland, was the guest speaker for the June meeting of the Town & Country Garden Club in Ashland. Awards were presented to: Diane Wood, Best in Show for arrangements, and Mary Stone, tri-color for horticulture. In addition, blue ribbon winners were” Diane Wood, Betty LaPlace, Mary Stone, Doris Rogers and Laura Ploof. Bob Schamerhorn will discuss “Attracting Birds with Water” at the next meeting of the garden club, which will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, July 11, at the First Baptist Church in Ashland. STEVEN WIDENER Steven Richard “Houndog 235” Widener, 47, of Ashland, lived in Louisa, passed on Sunday, June 26, 2016, doing what he loved on his Harley motorcycle. He was preceded in death by his WIDENER mother, Arnette Louise Widener of Ashland. He is survived by his father, Richard L. Widener of Ashland; daughter, Melissa J. Widenerof Richmond;sister,Ginger L. Widener of Ashland; spouse, Robin A. Densley; and stepson, CJ Johnson, both of Louisa; and a large group of friends and extended family. Steve was a longtime private dump truck driver until he went to work for a company he loved, Luck Stone in Rockville, as a lab technician and then a loader operator.

He was an avid CB Radio fan. His lifelong friends, Ricky and Cheryl Wood, were always there for him.
