A rising junior at Hanover High School recently placed seventh in the Nationals of the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA).

Holly Longest, in her first year, qualified for Regionals and Zones to advance to the Nationals, which were held in late April in Lexington, Kentucky.

Out of two rounds of competition and more than 1,200 competing in her class throughout the year, she rose to the challenge in placing seventh.

Holly is a member of Team Silver Lining and her head coach is John West of Hanover.

He has a riding academy at Coventry Farm in Ashland.

Wendy Keller Longest, Holly’s mother, said she “has been riding since she was 5 and is very committed and passionate about her sport. Her goals are to ride on a competition team in college and continue riding, training and showing.”

For 11 years, Wendy and her husband Doug have supported their daughter with her dream. Holly followed in her mother’s footsteps as a equestrian. Wendy showed in Hunter/Dressage.

According to the website, http://www.rideiea.org/, the Interscholastic Equestrian Association was established in the spring of 2002 and held its first annual national finals event the following year in Willoughby, Ohio.

A nonprofit organization, the IEA – for student equestrians in grades 6 through 12 -- has grown geometrically and geographically each year.

Beginning with just 200 participants, the IEA now has over 12,500 members in 42 states across North America.

There is no need for any rider to own a horse because competition horses are provided at each venue to the contestant.

IEA’s mission is to introduce students in private and public middle and secondary schools to equestrian sports and to promote and improve the quality of equestrian competition and instruction.

Its purpose is to set minimum standards for competition, provide information

concerning the creation and development of school associated equestrian sport programs, promote the common interests of safe riding instruction and competition and education on matters related to equestrian sport at the middle and secondary school levels (primarily ages 11 through 19).

To fulfill its purpose, the IEA offers guidance regarding the creation and development of school and/or barn associated equestrian programs.

IEA coaches aim to develop understanding and appreciation of equestrian sports through organized student competitions and additional equine educational opportunities.

Students have the opportunity to earn scholarships toward their college education through awards in competition and through sportsmanship activities.

In 2011, the IEA established the Benevolent Fund to assist riders and coaches in need through programs such as the IEA Financial Assistance Program and the IEA Coaches Assistance Grant.

Mechanicsville Martin’s store to close on July 23 Staff Report news@mechlocal.com M E C HA N IC S V I L L E – The Martin’s Food Market located at 7324 Bell Creek Rd. in Mechanicsville will close on Saturday, July 23.

The announcement was made Tuesday, June 14.

In addition to the local store, two others will be closing next month. They are: 3330 S. Crater Rd. in Petersburg, July 16, and 3000 Stony Point Rd. in Richmond, July 30.

The company announced in December 2015 that the stores would close this summer.

“With the leases for all three locations expiring, we made the business decision last year not to extend the leases for these three stores,” said Tom Lenkevich, Martin’s president. “We appreciate the hard work of our associates in providing quality service to our Petersburg, Mechanicsville and Stony Point customers over the past several years.”

A total of 257 associates will be impacted. All associates will be offered the opportunity to transfer to nearby stores.

The business decision to close these stores is not related to the pending Ahold Delhaize merger.

The Ashland Theater presents Summer Book & Movie Club

Members of the Hilliard Park Garden Club and volunteers from Capital One joined with Hanover Habitat for Humanity with landscaping projects in the Bailey Woods neighborhood in the Ashland area.

Hanover Habitat and garden clubs join forces for landscaping projects ASHLAND -- The Hilliard Park Garden Club and Hanover Habitat for Humanity used their unique skills to help four families on Tuesday, June 7.

Coordinated by Jean Fender, a member of the Hilliard Park Garden Club, four of Hanover Habitat’s homes in the Bailey Woods neighborhood, received landscaping.

Fender conducted an initial site analysis and selected plants appropriate to the property, with the help of the homeowners.

The club provided perennials such as daylilies, iris, and hostas, as well as several shrubs such as azaleas, firepower nandinas, and lorepetalum.

Glen Allen Nursery donated more than 30 shrubs and Pete Rose Inc. donated 6 cubic yards of mulch.

Thanks were extended to Glen Allen Nursery, Pete Rose Inc., Hilliard Park Garden Club, Hanover-Towne Garden Club, one member from Windsordale Garden Club who volunteered, and others

ASHLAND — The Ashland Theater announces a summer program of reading, films and discussion that will be known as the Summer Book & Movie Club.

With the support of the Ashland branch of the Pamunkey Regional Library and Bell, Book & Candle bookstore, the Summer Book & Movie Club program will pair three books with the films created from the books.

Each film presentation at the Ashland Theater will be followed by a discussion and Q&A session of both the book and movie.

This programming will accomplish three objectives: 1. The Summer Book & Movie Club provides a means of engaging the community and drawing it closer through the process of reading, viewing and talking about a good book.

2. We encourage young people to spend time over the summer reading and then joining in the viewing of the movie and the subsequent discussion.

3. Finally, this summer program will be pre-cursor for a permanent program of book/film events when the Ashland Theater reopens in 2017.

The three book/film combinations are: “The Body” (1982), a “coming-of-age” novella by Steven King -- film renamed “Stand by Me;” film viewing and discussion at 7 p.m.

“Charlie & the Chocolate Factory” (1964) -- a children’s book (and morality tale) by Roald Dahl; film renamed “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”

Native Americans to be discussed at June 26 meeting of historical society Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com The 2016 second quarterly meeting of the Hanover County Historical Society will focus on “Hanover’s Native Americans,” keynoting the Rock Springs archaeology survey/dig on the South Anna River near the Greenwood Church Road crossing of the river.

Henry A. Jaeger, a past state and chapter president of the Archeological Society of Virginia (ASV) who has more than 11,000 hours of archeological work, will speak at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 26, at the historic Salem Presbyterian Church at 5394 Studley Rd. in Mechanicsville. (The physical location is the intersection of Studley Road and Summer Hill Road in “downtown” Studley.)

The program will include a brief history of the church and a post presentation tour.

This survey, conducted in the mid-1980s, uncovered artifacts dating and history from Early Archaic (circa 10,000 B.P. [Before Present]) into the “more current” Middle Woodland period ending in 1400s, the latter more closely associated see HISTORICAL, pg. 5

Jump has a whole new meaning when you get to skip a grade

amantha “Sami” Greene knew she would be starting middle school in the fall, but what she recently discovered was that she would not be going from the fifth grade to the sixth. She has been chosen for a double grade promotion, meaning she will skip the sixth and become a seventh grader at Stonewall Jackson Middle School.

A straight A student, Sami has excelled in all her subjects, especially math. She has participated in the Gifted and Talent program since she was in kindergarten. When she was placed in the program, she was listed under the title of Academically Gifted.

She said her favorite subjects are math and science – “I really like science,” she said.

And, because of her advanced knowledge, she was accepted into the Compacted Math program as a fourth grader.

Her command of mathematics is such that she will be taking Algebra 1 in the 2016-2017 school year. Sami is skipping over seventh grade math and Pre-Algebra.

Alicia Broughton, the Gifted and Talented teacher, recommended that Sami be double promoted.

The decision was one that involved Sami’s parents.

Her mom, Miki, said, “We came in and talked to them; it was a random conversation about the whole Algebra thing, which is usually taken in high school. After we got that settled, we started talking about what is in sixth grade.

There wasn’t really anything challenging for her.”

Miki also pointed out that the Laurel Meadow counselor, Shelley Cray, was instrumental in Sami’s journey to getting double promoted. She said Cray “genuinely supported and encouraged her.”

“Mrs. Cray was sincerely interested in Samantha’s progress and was a champion and mentor for her from the start.

She challenged Sami to do her very best and congratulated her on her accomplishments along the way,” Miki said.

When Sami was 7, she was accepted into the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth. According to Miki, in order to be accepted, she had to demonstrate her academic ability through a series of challenging tests to comprehend material up to a sixth grade level. Miki said she and her husband Keith were appreciative of the support school leaders provided in allowing Sami to determine the next step in her classroom experience. “It was ultimately her decision,” Sami’s mom said.

Her parents said they told Sami, “Do what you want and she weighed the factors, the pros, the cons. She talked a lot about leaving her friends and how it would make her feel.”

When Sami realized she would have the summer months and time when she isn’t in school to spend with her friends, she said yes to

How do we end the violence in our nation?

While the debate continues to rage about the pros and cons about access to firearms, there is, without a doubt, a troubling and growing problem in our country. I grew up in a home with a man who owned a rifle and pistols and was a card-carrying member of the National Rifle Association.

I won’t even attempt to dissect the mind of Omar Mateen and his coldhearted shooting of people simply out for a good time. Was he conflicted about his own sexuality? Did he hate gays? Was he just another extremist who wanted to go down in history as one of the most evil men to be born on U.S. soil?

The images have filled newspapers, TV news broadcasts and social media, leaving an indelible mark on what is good about who we are as Americans and how we must unite to move forward.

Without question, whenever these horrific acts occur, we show the rest of the world how Americans band together, helping in the worst of times.

I’m numb. I’m puzzled. I’m sad. What do we do? Where do we go from here? As always, your opinions are most welcome.

Looking over violent acts in Hanover County Col. David R. Hines, sheriff, provided the following statistics for 2014 and 2015 concerning violent crimes. They are listed by the crime, and numbers for ’14 and ’15. Forcible rape, 5, 12; kidnapping/abduction, 3, 7; forcible sodomy, 2, 7; murder and non-negligent manslaughter, 3, 3; sexual assault with an object, 3, 3; statutory rape, 5, 3; negligent manslaughter, 0, 1. While any number other than zero is alarming, the data shows we live in a pretty safe county. While we can’t comprehend the violence shown in other areas across the United States, Hanover County residents have, for the most part, been fortunate. The first time I heard of Ashland, Virginia, was when the D.C. sniper struck. Former sheriff Col. V. Stuart Cook had organized a regional task force to be prepared if such an attack occurred.

The one answer to all these questions is to pray for our nation, our state, our county, our homes.

Winning, losing — and learning

W

hile most of us go about our daily routines as one season transitions to another, it’s easy to forget the importance of this time of year to the younger generation.

With countless graduations and awards ceremonies, coupled with a slew of state and regional championships, it’s an exciting time for many youths who are just beginning their journey to adulthood.

For some, it’s the first time in life that society takes account of winners and losers and places its endorsement on those expected to excel and offers the promise of achievement to all.

In a world where grey seems to be the new black and white, it’s a time when our youth gain their first realization of how life works.

At first glance, what could be more clearly defined and obvious than the difference between winners and losers?

It’s easy to find victory in the lines of excited graduates as they line up to receive diplomas across our region and our nation. Some will finish high school studies with honors, while others view their achievement as a stepping stone to a future goal. In my mind, they are all winners as they complete 12 years of education and face endless possibilities for a rewarding future.

It’s also a time when teams across the state are wrapping up their seasons, and the best are heading to playoffs or state championships. It’s no secret who the winners are when it comes to this group . . . or is it?

Over the past few weeks, I’ve watched numerous students achieve unbelievable academic achievements, capturing scholarships and grants for their future educations. I can only describe that group as winners in the true sense of the word.

I thought of that concept of winning and losing as my son Jack departed for his fifth year of MDA [Muscular Dystrophy Association] Camp in Wakefield.

The kids who attend this camp will never experience the joys of athletic excellence. They won’t run the fastest time or score the winning touchdown through no fault of their own.

But, they treat camp like it’s their state championship, and the week is filled with carefree activities usually off limits for disabled kids. see WINNING, pg. 9

Protect our bikers, runners and walkers Virginia has laws against DUI, DWI, speeding, texting and other distracting activities while behind the wheel of an automobile.

As we have seen over the last couple of years, people are still getting killed and injured while biking, running and walking on our county’s barely wide enough roadways built for motor vehicles.

As the above mentioned laws were intended to stop accidents and deaths of innocent people and property damage of others, they don’t seem to be very effective in protecting the lives of our road warriors and other athletes.

Saving lives and protecting the public being our number one concern, I’m wondering if it has crossed anyone’s mind to make it illegal to bike, run or walk on public highways as a way to save lives.

It’s been proven over and over that the law can’t stop all the drinking and driving, speeding and texting, but at least a biker, runner or walker won’t be in front of them when they

lose control if they are not on the road.

A 150-pound body is not going to stop a 5,000-pound illegally driven vehicle.

“There are several elements of our request for which I will continue to lobby,” Geen said.

“An element should be added to the policy that prevents a teacher from being punished for violation of this policy without proof of willful or malicious intent.”

ASHLAND -- Following an exhaustive review procedure, the Hanover County School Board approved minor changes to its current policy regarding controversial subject matter taught in county classrooms at its regular June 14 meeting.

The new language clarifies current policy that requires teachers to obtain prior approval when showing controversial films or presentations and provide alternative lesson plans for students who are uncomfortable with the subject matter planned.

The approved changes were introduced by an advisory committee headed by Julie Tate, head Media Services teacher, and Debbie Arco, director of Curriculum and Instruction. Originally formed in 2014, the committee initiated changes to the policy, but reconvened to consider additional requests submitted by students earlier this year.

The controversial material issue gained attention when

some parents complained regarding the showing of Thomas Friedman’s “Exploring the Roots of 9-11” at Hanover High School in 2014, a film that explores alternative views of the attack on America.

In a companion motion, the board rejected a request from students that contained suggestions for more sweeping changes, especially where teacher retribution is involved.

Students presented board members with a list of suggested changes earlier this year.

The approved changes approved were minor.

Regarding the policy regarding teaching controversial subject matter, the committee suggested changing the word dispassionate to unbiased.

The committee also suggested a clarification on the use of full-length films in the classroom. The new wording requires a rating on films shown in their entirety in the classroom.

OBITUARIES | Death Notices & Funerals EDWIN HALEY SR. Edwin Argyle Haley Sr. was called home to be with God on June 12, 2016.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Dorothy Haley; and his sister, Mary Kathryn. Argyle is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Margaret; two sons, Argie and Max (Debbie). He has HALEY four granddaughters, Michelle, Ashley (Carter), Whitney and Kaitlyn; two great-grandchildren, Ashtyn and Brycen. He also is survived by his siblings, Maxine Hazelgrove, Roy Haley and Jerry Lee Beck (John). Mr. Haley was a graduate of Virginia Tech.

He served distinguishably in Korea, where he was awarded a Purple Heart and retired as a Major from the United States Army Reserves. After Korea, he joined his father at Haley and Durett Hardware in Ashland. After retiring, Argyle got to pursue one of his passions, driving tractor/trailer trucks. He also enjoyed playing golf with his many lifelong friends. Argyle was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he served as a former Deacon and was on the finance committee. He also was a member of the Billy Flowers Sunday School class. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 20, 2016,

at the First Baptist Church in Ashland.

W. DOUGLAS LANE W. Douglas Lane died June 10, 2016.

He was born on June 30, 1937, to Lee Forrest Lane and Carrie Sharpe Lane. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his halfbrother, Elbert Hall. He is survived by his four daughters, Lesley Newman, Lauren Beeman, Ellen McAllister and LANE Tiffany Hopkins; grandchildren, Cheyenne Wood, Reed McAllister and John (Jack) McAllister; and half-brother, Alton Meredith Hall.

He is survived by his children, Robbie (Cathy), Charlie (Judy), Rose (Bruce), Vanessa (David), Roland, Rodney (Mandy), Amy (Bobby) and Julie; and a daughter-in-law, Fran. He also is survived by 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; a twin sister, Anne Brooks; and many nieces and nephews.

Bobby also is alsosurvived by his lifelong friend and business partner, Steve Wilhite; along with many loving family members and friends. The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to Pop’s great-niece, Sherry, for taking such good care of him and his garden.

Partnered with Walmart Neighborhood Market in Ashland, the career and volunteer personnel of Station 10 hosted their first community food drive and raised 574 food items, bringing their current total to

1,476 items.

The volunteers of Station 10 are committed to raising 10,000 food items to impact the citizens of Ashland and surrounding communities. They are actively seeking local businesses, civic organizations, churches, schools, and other community groups to join them in this effort.

The announcement was made during a mock staff meeting where she received a surprise visit from Dr. Michael Gill, superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools, who presented her with the award.

She has been employed

She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from The College of William and Mary. She graduated from Atlee High School in 2010.

Shaky defense dooms Post 175 in opener

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Both Mechanicsville Post 175 and South Richmond Post 137 had had just one practice prior to their American Legion season opener Tuesday night.

Both teams had a large cadre of players unavailable because their high school teams were competing in their respective Virginia High School League state tournaments the previous week. In Post 137’s case, about half its players were from Division 6 Cosby, which fell in the Group 6 semifinals on June 10. In Post 175’s case, four players came from Group 4A champion Hanover.

The rust on the rest of the Mechanicsville squad – with most of its high school players off for two weeks and many of its college players off for nearly a month – caught up with it on its season opener as an errorprone defense fumbled away a sixth-inning lead and led to its downfall, 10-8, before a home crowd at Hanover High School.

“It’s not a great start, but it’s just the beginning. It’s not how you start, but how you finish, so we’ll figure it out from here,” said Post 175 manager Bobby White. “I think tonight was an anomaly. I don’t think tonight’s going to happen on a regular basis – I mean, 10 mistakes

White said the team had had just one practice the night before its opening game, and that the lengthy break for most of the team was troublesome.

“We can attribute a lot of it to the fact that some of these kids haven’t played live baseball in a few weeks,” White said.

“They just need to get their timing back, of being on the field playing – it’s a new envi-

ronment, new place. But the biggest thing is to just clear it.

Move on to the next day.”

Post 137 faced a similar challenge getting ready for opening day – they held their first practice the previous Sunday.

“Some of my guys from Manchester and Clover Hill haven’t played in two weeks,” said Post 137 manager Scott Rash. “My Cosby guys played on Friday, you know, so they’re fresh. They’re sharp. The other

guys are trying to get back into game mode, very much like [Post 175 players] are.”

MECHANICSVILLE – It didn’t take long in the season for the Mechanicsville Post 175 bats to wake up.

After an opening game where the offense was silent, Post 175’s roared to life against Powhatan Post 201, posting a 10-0 win after five-and-one-half innings Thursday.

The game was called early because of severe storms moving into the area that night.

“I thought we swung the bat well and pitchers threw strikes,” Post 175 manager Bobby White said.

GRAL swim season gets off to stormy start

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor GLEN ALLEN – The Greater Richmond Aquatic League summer swim season began last week with school calendars and weather concerns scrambling a hectic meet schedule.

Some teams began swimming as early as the previous Saturday, while others who could not get their Thursday night meets completed as scheduled because of the severe weather than moved into the area had to finish with selftimed events over the weekend.

Two local teams, Ashland and Old Church, were among a handful who gambled on the weather by sticking to the usual Wednesday-night meet schedule. Hanover Country Club and Pebble Creek, who tried to avoid keeping kids up on what was still a school night, found the weather catching up to them on Thursday.

“I am glad that we got through [the first week] and everyone was safe, especially with the storms on Thursday,” said Pebble Creek head coach

As far as overall results go, numbers matter, said Ashland head coach Kevin Trent. Teams with more swimmers – thus more opportunities to score,

generally do better in terms of team scores than those with fewer swimmers. Trent’s Barracudas, with fewer than 100 swimmers, had a harder time against host Wyndham, which had more than 120, particularly in the younger age groups.

An increase in swimmer numbers can bring bigger challenges – but fun ones.

“I’m really excited,” said Old Church head coach Courtney Hurtubise. “This is our biggest team we’ve ever had as far as I know. When I started six years ago, we had 55 kids. We have 97 this year. And we moved up a division, which is a tougher division, but a lot better competition.”

Trent said the goal is to

get as many kids to score as possible. The Barracudas had their share. Five Barracudas – Christine Datovech, Paul Datovech, Steven Dinger, Kayla Maxey and Samantha Seinfeld – were triple winners in Ashland’s meet with Wyndham.

After Post 201 left a runner on base in the top of the second inning, Post 175 exploded in the bottom of the second.

Tyler Blaum and Chip Granderson opened with backto-back singles. Justin Bishop loaded the bases after reaching on a sacrifice bunt and error with no outs. Aaron Saunders then came to the plate and singled in two runs to make it 4-0.

Post 201 then brought in relief pitcher Brian Fitch, who – after allowing Saunders to reach second on a wild pitch – issued a walk to Lambert.

After Lambert is picked off at third, Strong hits a deep fly to right field. He is out, but Crosby advances to third on the play. Austin Morris gets hit by a pitch. He steals second, but Powhatan catcher Justin Bales throws the ball into the outfield, allowing Crosby to score on the error to make it 7-0.

Powhatan tried to get on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Three straight singles by Jacob Talley, Logan Allen and Korey Singh loaded the bases with no outs, but the Post 175 defense stood tall.

flyout to right field to get out of the inning with no runs scored.

Granderson would score with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. He reached on a walk, stole second scored on a Bishop single to make it 8-0.

The hits kept coming for Post 175 in the bottom of the fourth. Lambert led off with a double. Cosby walked, and Hayden Moore moved the pair over with a sacrifice bunt.

Foley said, “ ‘The Wiz’ is a glorious musical retelling

of Frank Baum’s ‘Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ set in the context of African-American culture. With an infectious funky soul score and lyrics by Charlie Smalls, ‘The Wiz’ brought renewed relevance to a timeless classic,” She said the 1975 Broadway production was “like nothing Broadway had ever seen, and ultimately won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score.”

The recent TV version of “The Wiz,” with an all-star cast, reintroduced even more of today’s audience to the wonder and magic of the story of Dorothy and her friends, the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Lion.
