When a dishwasher is working properly, it can make fast clean-up of scores of dishes, silverware and glasses.

As handy as dishwashers can be, sometimes they seem to lose their cleaning power.

While inadequate cleaning may indicate the time has come to replace the dishwasher, many times all the appliance needs is a little maintenance and TLC. Begin by investigating the interior of the dishwasher.

SHLAND — Residents of the Town of Ashland were given their first opportunity to voice their opinions and concerns about potential renovation and revitalization plans for the Ashland Theater at the Wednesday, Sept. 16, work session meeting held at Town Hall.

One of the main concerns voiced by the majority of 15 residents who spoke before Ashland Town Council was the $600 rental fee that would be required to

use the theater if the feasibility study conducted by Waukeshaw Development is followed.

Ashland residents said they would like to see the theater continue to be utilized by community organizations and nonprofits, as it has been over the past months with the pop-up events hosted by The Ashland Main Street Association (AMSA), but feel the per use fee is more than those organizations can afford.

Hanover Bike Fest gives residents front row seat to UCI World Championships

ECHANICSVILLE — In celebration of the UCI World Championships, several businesses, including Kroger, Center of the Universe Brewing Company (COTU), Dominion Orthodontics, HHHunt Corporation, HCA Virginia, Performance Bicycle Richmond, Rebkee Company and the Hanover Chamber of Commerce, are partnering with residents of the Rutland community to host a free Hanover Bike Fest event from noon to 4 p.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 23) at Rutland Commons in Mechanicsville.

The bike race started Sept. 19 and continues through Sept. 27.

Today’s event will feature live music from Easy 100.9, food trucks, a kids’ zone, free bike tune-ups, local vendors, an appearance by Flying Squirrels mascot Nutzy and a beer garden from the Center of the Universe.

“Knowing that the World Championships are held in the U.S. so rarely, we saw this as the perfect opportunity to bring the community together and create a memory that will last a lifetime,” John Ellis, executive chef of Kroger, said in an email. … “We’re showing our support through the Hanover Bike Fest and by doing our part to get customers and associates excited about the World Championships coming to town. It’s a great way to showcase all that the region has to offer!”

The beer garden will feature all of the brewery’s year-round beers, both in cans and on draft, as well as its seasonal Oktoberfest beer.

SHLAND — The Ashland Police Department is investigating a series of larcenies from vehicles that occurred from Friday, Sept. 11. to Tuesday, Sept.

15.

According to Officer Chip Watts, these incidents occurred in residential neighborhoods and apartment complexes, and involved unlocked vehicles.

He said Ashland police investigators have arrested one individual in connection to these incidents. “This is an ongoing investigation and further arrests are anticipated,” he added.

Anyone with information regarding these offenses or suspicious activity occurring Sept. 12 to Sept. 15 is asked to contact the Ashland Police Department at

Never leave your car running (unattended).

Do not leave your keys in the ignition or inside your vehicle.

Completely close all windows and doors.

Do not leave valuables in your vehicle (if you must do so store items in the

trunk or in a securable compartment).

Park in well lighted areas (after dark).

Additional Safeguards: If your vehicle has a car alarm always activate this system.

If you have theft deterrent decals (place them a visible area on your vehicle).

If you have a garage, park your vehicle inside it. Lock both your car and the garage.

Pay attention to your surroundings.

Be aware of persons loitering and nearby activity and call 911 immediately to report suspicious activity to the police.

Be wary of people who approach your vehicle to ask for directions, change or to hand out flyers.

“It’s a pretty big deal to have this coming to Richmond, and I don’t think everyone realizes how big bike racing is across the world,” David Donaldson,

Also at the Hanover Bike Fest, The Arc of Hanover, a nonprofit organization that serves adults and children with developmental disabili-

ties, will be selling $5 tickets for three chances to dunk a politician or candidate for political office.

Hanover legislators and candidates participating in “The Dunk of Truth” include: Delegates Chris Peace and Buddy Fowler; Faye Prichard, Glenn Millican, Toni Radler, Web Stokes and Debbie Repp. The dunking book will be located near Dunkin Donuts at the Rutland Fan Zone. Hanover Habitat executive director leaves organization

By Meredith Rigsby mrigsby@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE — Tim Bowring, the executive director of Hanover Habitat for Humanity, has departed the organization after seven and a half years to “pursue other opportunities,” according to a Sept. 11 press release from the local organization.

an effort to generate more foot traffic and economic activity for businesses and the town.

This project will target the areas north of Myrtle Street and south of Henry Clay Street and College Avenue.

When Dan Bartges, one of the project leaders and a member of the board of the Ashland Main Street Association, previously approached council about the initiative, the main concern was who would pay for the lights and who would install them.

Since that meeting, town manager Charles Hartgrove has met with Public Works officials and employees to assess concerns about the structural details of the 18 buildings that would be decorated, how the lights could be strung without causing damage to the buildings and liability issues.

The town’s insurance company, for liability reasons, is not comfortable with town staff and employees working on private property to put up the lights, Hartgrove said.

In an effort to curb some of the liability concerns, Bartges has spoken with a private contractor, Terrell’s Tree & Lawn Service, which would be willing to string the lights on the buildings using a bucket truck, volunteers and staff.

Glen Terrell, owner of the company, said he estimates the lights could be installed on all the buildings in three to four days for a cost of $4,000, Bartges said.

“We’ve also, I think, talked to every shop manager and, I think now, every building owner and we haven’t had one disparaging word about this,” Bartges said. “Everybody seems so excited about this idea; they all seem to share the vision that this will truly bring a lot of new people and shoppers to the town.”

To help spread the word about the event, Bartges also is in talks with executives from CSX and Amtrak.

We are “asking Amtrak if they can bring their weight to work with the national media because we frankly don’t have the gravitas for that, but they do, and certainly CSX does,” Bartges said. … “The rumor is they [CSX] just thinks this would be one of the coolest things to see from a small town in celebration basically of train travel.”

In addition to buying the fixtures to hang the holiday lights, Bartges also would like to hire in a certified electrical engineer to meet with Terrell’s Tree & Lawn Service to ensure all parties know what needs to be done in order for the lights to work well and be installed safely.

As part of the Light Up the Tracks event, there also will be a tree illumination on the area of land in front of Ashland Coffee and Tea, which is owned by Randolph-Macon College.

The college has said it would provide water to sustain the tree and electric outlets for the tree’s lights.

Mike Hildebrand, one of the owners of James River Nursery, has volunteered to take down the selected holiday tree from its original location, transport it to town, erect it and stabilize it, all at no cost, Bartges said.

The shrubbery around the tree will be lit with five tiers of white lights and the holiday tree will be decorated with old-timey colored lights.

As far as the request to council for $7,500 to support the project, Hartgrove said there is no amount in a line item to provide the funds.

Bartges said he does not anticipate the project will require the entire $7,500 amount. “We are going to make a big effort to get the community to donate, and I see no reason at all why that money shouldn’t come back for repayment,” he said.

“I think one of the things we have to think about long-term is what we’re going to do in terms of making sure that this continues over the long haul and part of that is going to be figuring out a long term budget,” said council member Faye O. Prichard.

Town attorney Andrea Erard said she was comfortable with the liability aspects of the project and town council passed a motion “to provide an amount up to $7,500 to Main Street Association for reimbursement of expenses related to the Light Up the Tracks event.”

After discussion, local resident Ragan Phillips and his wife Phyllis Theroux pledged $500 in support of the Light Up the Tracks project.

In other business, Hugh Joyce, executive director of the Ashland Main Street Association, provided an update on the organization’s activities and initiatives, and Ashland Police Chief Douglas Goodman reminded the community about emergency preparedness steps they should take to ensure their safety during unexpected situations.

The consent agenda was approved, which included a referral of ORD201518, Motel Revisions/Zoning, to the Ashland Planning Commission.

The next Ashland Town Council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m.

New Bowman Body episodes to screen on Saturday Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com ASHLAND — Scary movie fans in Central Virginia have a unique opportunity on Saturday, Sept. 26, when legendary horror movie host, the Bowman Body, comes to the big screen at the Ashland Theater for a special one-time showing of two new Shock Theater episodes shot in August.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Bill Bowman played the Bowman Body, a charmingly optimistic ghoul who hosted movies that were often more horrible than horrifying, but he and his audience had great fun with even the worst of the lot.

The character was on in three different Virginia markets, but is best remembered from his days hosting Shock Theatre on WXEX (now WRIC), Channel 8, in the Richmond market. At one point, his show was even more popular than Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show.

In 2009, director/producer, Sean Kotz, of Horse Archer Productions, began working with Bill Bowman on a pair of horror host documentaries that have led to a revival of interest in the cool ghoul. “For years now, people have been asking for new episodes,� said Kotz. “So, we finally put

At the beginning of the meeting, planning director Nora Amos gave an overview of the current status of the $500,000 Industrial Revitalization Fund awarded to the town by the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD).

In June, town staff met with the DHCD to discuss a contract negotiation in order to obtain the grant.

From then, the Town of Ashland was given 60 days to sign the contract, but has not done so at this point because it began the public process to discuss what the town would ultimately like to see happen with the theater.

However, “They [DHCD] really said that we need to show that we are moving forward on the concept that we proposed in our application,� Amos said.

New applications are due by Oct. 1 to the DHCD for the next round of funding.

The organization is able to take the funding that Ashland received and place it in the next round of funding if the town is not able to come to a conclusion about what to do with the theater.

The town can then reapply for the grant, but is not guaranteed that it will receive it again. “If we could try to come to some consensus in the community of what we’re going to do by the third week in October, [we’d] greatly appreciate it,�

She addressed the rental fee for the use of the theater, saying that — even if the theater is operated as a nonprofit entity — there will need to be a per use fee to pay for costs incurred.

Amos suggested creating a new nonprofit organization, separate from AMSA, that would use the funds raised through AMSA’s pop-up events to coordinate with the theater operator to schedule regular, ongoing nonprofit events.

Utilizing local technicians, actors and other seasoned horror hosts, the team produced two episodes of comedic breaks wrapped around a pair of classic horror films.

The new episodes feature House on Haunted Hill with Vincent Price and City of the Dead (aka Horror Hotel) with Christopher Lee. According to Kotz, the DVDs will be ready in October and can be ordered now, but fans wanting to get the full experience have their first opportunity at the Sept. 26 showings.

The Shock Theatre version of House on Haunted Hill will screen at 1 p.m. and City of the Dead will run at 7 p.m. with an appearance by Bill Bowman and a horror themed costume contest between shows.

Cyclists bring a new kind of excitement

By Melody Kinser Managing Editor “Get your motor runnin’. Head out on the highway.” No, wait, wrong kind of bikes.

OK, then, think Lance Armstrong. That won’t work either — the whole doping issue after seven consecutive victories in the Tour de France placed him in the disgraced category.

Seriously, though, let’s look at what is taking place throughout the region.

The 2015 UCI World Cycling Championships are bringing a unique excitement, as well as — and let’s all say “Thank you” — revenue-generating opportunities to the Greater Richmond area.

We’re rolling out the welcome mat in a huge way for this event, and, while there will be some changes in routines due to traffic pattern changes, the idea of such a major sport literally rolling through here is incredible.

Ch-ching will be heard all around the metro area.

And thank you to Hanover County government leaders — led by the board of supervisors — for making sure we are spotlighted and playing a role in the event.

To all the supporters of the cycling championships, we extend a sincere thank you. With the realization of what it means to Hanover County and the other localities in and around Richmond, we are thrilled to join in showcasing the best we have to offer.

We’re organizing our schedules to coordinate with the time frame in which the cyclists will be going down U.S. 301 near our offices today. But, without question, we welcome their arrival.

Steppenwolf and Armstrong aside, this truly is an event that shows the world what makes the place we call home so special. Ride on!

They run for kids who can’t

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Watching football is probably the last thing on the to-do list of parents who have children with muscular dystrophy (MD) … most of the time.

On Saturday, Sept. 26, most of them will make an exception and tune in to see coaches from around the country unite for one cause.

And while winning and losing are usually foremost on the minds of these competitive leaders, they’ll embark on a mission that brings new meaning to those words.

Each September, coaches from across the nation wear armbands with the words “Coach to Cure” on them.

As a retired Officer of the Court who worked with many law enforcement officers for over 20 years, I have seen my share of crime scenes. It does not matter the color of your skin, your gender or your religious beliefs.

When a family loses a loved one to criminal activity, there is a pain and hurt that cannot be described.

Baltimore, Maryland, as of this date has had over 212 homicide victims in the city. This surpasses the total for all of 2014 with about four months still left in this year.

Across the United States, cities have been experiencing a surge in murders and violent crimes.

Milwaukee has already topped its 2014 violent crimes mark. Ask the families of those victims: Do the lives of their loved ones matter?

Dr. Ellen Page, a Northwestern University criminologist, states that the day when all human beings begin to accept each other as human beings without labels and socioeconomic lines, then crime and murders will decrease in the future.

Canova Peterson and Wayne Hazzard [chair] do not deserve any criticism for commenting on a policy when the issue became public. This issue was dealt with in an appropriate and timely fashion. Everyone but the education (teachers’ union) lobby moved on.

A teacher turnover rate of 7 percent is three points below the state average. Very good for a work group this size. The total compensation package for teachers is so good it can be called generous.

The Hanover County Board of Supervisors gives the Hanover County Public Schools every

penny they ask for. My one complaint is a weakness on math and English in the core curriculum.

These two subjects are the foundation on which all worthwhile learning rest. The entire Hanover County Board of Supervisors supports the Hanover County Public Schools completely all the time.

I was glad to see the young lady quote Socrates. When he speaks of filling our vessel he means fill it with what you have to know, what you need to know and what will serve you well when you have to do real critical thinking.

Can anyone believe teachers employed by Hanover County Public Schools have abandoned all hope? Hanover County teachers have it made. Only the education (teachers’ union) lobby would dare make any such claim.

When I reflect on Dante, I think of his “Inferno.” Dante’s “Inferno” would be a good place to put liberal education policy, liberal social policy, liberal energy policy, liberal economic policy, political correctness and the education (teachers’ union) lobby. If we did this, the ambience of the “Inferno” would be enhanced and the earth would be a better place.

While we are at it, we should throw in the administration at the University of Virginia. I have never seen so much incompetence, bad judgment and serious mistakes made in so short a time. After all, nothing happened. After the lawyers get through with these people, into the “Inferno” they go.

Let us not forget recent events at Virginia Commonwealth University. They were forced to revise their policy on “relationships” between students and professors. It seems these professors were taking unfair sexual advantage of our children and grandchildren. The “Inferno” was made for these “professors.”

In the secular progressive world of the modern college campus some words are considered impediments to the

implementation of their agenda. Ethics, morals, judgment, responsibility, accountability and professional conduct are just some of these. Just insert all traditional American values.

Questioning search funds Reading the Local today and the article titled “Superintendent search moves into high gear” causes me once again to ask, “Why waste the money?” How many times in the past have we spent the money only to find that the best person for the job has been in Hanover County Public Schools the whole time.

I predict this time will not be different. When was the last time someone was hired from the “outside?” Never may be the answer. We all know that if we hire an outsider, they may not be inclined to be as good an insider as an insider we already have would be. Lord help us if we should look outside and end up with an absolute genius from somewhere else in the U.S. I understand geniuses can be difficult to work with.

How about this? I have made the prediction. Give me the $25,000 and if my prediction does not come true, I will give back $28,000 to the county, a $3,000 profit for doing nothing.

Ashland Garden Club reviews activities, programs

SHLAND — Members of the Ashland Garden Club met Thursday, Sept. 10, in the home of Dr. Linda Magovern for their September business meeting.

The club’s many activities and programs were outlined and discussed.

The officers for 2015 are: Elizabeth Bickford, president; Mary Anne Griffin, first vice president; Michelle Hamner, second vice president; Margaret Douglas, treasurer; Dale Sayers, recording secretary; Nancy Wood, corresponding secretary; and Anne Cross, parliamentarian.

The Ashland Garden Club is engaged in numerous community activities, including the planting, maintenance and overall beautification of the Ashland Train Station and Visitor Center.

The club also works closely with the staff at Henry Clay Elementary School, Hanover Master Gardeners and the Ashland Kiwanis International

It’s an effort to raise awareness and money for muscular dystrophy research and treatment, and represents a partnership between the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and Parent Project for Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD).

PPMD is a nonprofit organization searching for cures and treatments for the thousands of children who suffer from various forms of MD. Most of their fundraising efforts are devoted to research, and the organization has one of the lowest administrative percentages of any major charity.

The group is headed by Pat Furlong, who lost two sons to MD, but never gave up the fight to cure a disease that robs children of their mobility and, eventually, their lives. It’s a serious mission run by serious people who won’t take no for an answer.

As most of you know, the effort has a much more personal meaning for my family

to plant and maintain a garden for students at Henry Clay. This program, known as “Roots & Shoots,” is a long-standing effort on the garden club’s part and is extremely popular with children.

“Fall Fantasy” is a fundraiser that will be held Oct. 13 at Birdsong Hall at Randolph-Macon to benefit the garden club. Monies raised will go into the coffers for a statewide Garden Club of Virginia Lily Show put on by the Ashland Garden Club in 2019 and 2020. The Lily Show will be held in Hanover County.

Garden club members said they were very excited about winning a Blue Ribbon in the Garden Club of Virginia’s statewide Lily Show that was held in June in Middleburg.

Exhibits at this month’s program featured Dahlias, Sedum, Wildflowers and House Plants.

The arrangement categories were Late Colonial arrangements and Parallel Design arrangements.

and me. My son Jack suffers from Duchenne, the most critical form of MD. PPMD offers a glimmer of hope for families like mine where sometimes it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, and maybe, more accurately, hopeless.

During the week leading up to the Coach to Cure Saturday, teams invite MD patients to their practices, interact with the kids and get a first-hand look at real life challenges. They quickly realize that challenges on the field are only minor when compared to the daily struggle that MD kids endure.

For the past four years, Coach Joe Fowler’s Goochland Bulldogs have hosted a Coach to Cure event, and Jack serves as honorary guest. He spends time with his favorite football team and flips the coin to open the contest.

It’s an emotional experience for me as kids who have spectacular muscles that work better than OK take a moment to know a kid who will never score a touchdown or make an important tackle. The players realize

that, and, somehow, they share their enormous abilities with Jack — and watching them run somehow makes him feel better.

I’ve often said they run for the kids who can’t.

Words fall woefully short of expressing the personal appreciation and admiration I have for Coach Fowler, his team and the whole GHS family for caring about Jack and other kids suffering from MD. It’s a special evening for him, but, more importantly, it’s an opportunity for the Bulldogs to show their true character and compassion.

The team takes on Randolph Henry for this year’s Coach to Cure event, but they’ll be challenging a much more intimidating opponent in their minds as they fight and win for kids, except for Jack, they have never met.

Please join us on Friday, Sept. 25, for this year’s Coach to Cure game. It’s homecoming at Goochland, so come early and stay late. I’m sure the Bulldogs won’t disappoint with the final score, but, in reality, they are winners in my mind long before the opening whistle sounds.

OBITUARIES | Death Notices & Funerals ERNEST CARNEAL Ernest Lemuel Carneal, 72, went peaceably to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 9, 2015, of natural causes. Ernest was born on September 16, 1942, to Ashton Clyde Carneal and Pearl Blanche Adams Carneal. He grew up on a family farm and stuck close to his mother, Pearl. One of his favorite things to do was to go with his Dad and Uncle Harry to the tobacco market in downtown Richmond to sell their tobacco. He loved climbing up the ladders in the tobacco barns to open and close windows to regulate the curing temperature. Ernest began school at Edmund Pendleton Elementary in Caroline County. As a teen, he went away to Fishburne Military Academy, where he developed a love for the structure the military offered. It also was where he played football. Unlike his grandson, Stephen II, football was not his favorite sport. Baseball and church softball were where his athletic prowess shown through. For his senior year, Ernest came back to live in Ashland with family and graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1960. Ernest proudly served in the U.S. Army and had a love for the military. Right before he was to leave for Vietnam, Ernest’s military career was cut short due to the illness of his father. Ernest was called home to take care of the family farm and his mother. It was there on Happy Acres that he lived, worked and gardened until his death. Ernest worked at Watkins Cottrell Hardware, where he oversaw the sales and transfers of firearms to local hardware stores. He moved on to work for A.H. Robins Pharmaceuticals in Richmond to run the company store. While working for Watkins Cottrell and receiving a little help from some friends at church, Ernest met his wife, Janice Ann Hodges, through a mutual friend while attending services at Immanuel Baptist Church in Richmond. Ernest was a life-long member of Carmel Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and trustee of the historic church until the very last day of his life. He also helped found, build and maintain Carmel Christian School, later named, The Carmel School. He is survived by many friends and family members of Caroline County. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Janice Hodges Carneall; his son, John Ashton, his wife, Lisa, stepgranddaughter, Lisa Anderson, husband, Mark; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Trip, Radiley and Oscar. He also is survived by his stepgrandson, Adam Perry, his wife, Lacy; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Elijah and Noella. He also is survived by his other son, Stephen Ernest, and his wife, Melissa; and his grandchildren, Stephen II, Courtney, Chancellor,

Gideon and Brennan. Ernest was welcomed into Heaven by his grandbabies, Ashley, Joshua and Little Bit. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

JOHN MARKEY John Patrick Markey, 92, of Henrico, died peacefully on Friday, September 4, 2015. John was born in Manhattan, New York City, and grew up in an immigrant, Irish neighborhood of George Washington Heights, New York City. John graduated valedictorian from both George Washington High School, New York City and from the School of Engineering, New York University, where he also obtained a full scholarship. He played on the tennis team while in high school, received numerous academic awards and was class president his senior year. During World War II he was an intel-

ligence officer for the Office of Strategic Services (pre-CIA). Afterward he obtained positions as an electrical engineer and did some international consulting work for the electric utility industry in Cuba prior to the Castro regime. After a long career as Director of Engineering, Codes and Standards and Research and Planning for Edison Electric Institute in Washington, D.C., he retired to enjoy many years of extensive traveling in the U.S. and abroad, playing golf and spending time with family and friends, which was his favorite activity. In retirement he became profoundly deaf and was an active advocate for the hearing impaired as President of the Fredericksburg Hearing Impaired Association. As busy as he was professionally, John always found time to be involved with his children’s activities which included volunteer positions as PTA President, youth baseball and basketball coaching and as a Cub Scout leader. He was predeceased by his parents, Eileen and Michael Markey; his wife for 60 years, Anne P. Markey; and daughter, Rhonda A. Markey. John is survived by his children, John B. Markey (Gail) of Rockville and Debby Markey of Henrico; three grandchildren, Michelle Markey of Mt. Ranier, Maryland, Laura Payne (Ryan) of Rockville and Jenna Markey of Henrico; one great-grandchild, Avery Payne; one stepgreatgrandchild, Alyssa Payne; and John’s cat, Chloe.

BONNIE ORNDUFF Bonnie Fisher Ornduff, 79, died Thursday, September 10, 2015, at Chestnut Grove in Richmond. Born July 22, 1936, in Louisa, she was a daughter of the late Russell Jennings Fisher Jr. and Ophelia Whitlock Fisher. Mrs. Ornduff worked for a number of years at Nationwide Insurance in Richmond and was retired from Jefferson National Bank in Louisa. She was a member of Mineral Baptist Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir. She is survived by one son, Frederick “Rick” Ornduff III and wife, Donna, of Ashland; one brother, George E. ANDREW STANLEY Andrew Wayland “Jack” Stanley, of Montpelier, passed away on September 16, 2015. Jack was born on January 30, 1926, at “Oakland Plantation,” Beaverdam. He was predeceased by his parents, Lee Eldridge and Bettie Marie Lowry Stanley.

He started his education at Hall’s Free School and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1942. Jack was a “self-made” successful businessman who started a lumber business first, and, in 1953, founded Stanley Construction Company in Ashland. Under his leadership, S.C.C. built roads all over Virginia, including King William, Hanover, New Kent, Gloucester, Bowling Green, Spotsylvania, Henrico, Winchester and Goochland.

Jack was quoted in 2006 saying, “I’ve done jobs all over the state, but I’ve always lived a few miles from where I was born. I’ve never been anywhere that I can’t go back.” He was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church and served on the cemetery committee and as a trustee. He was a past treasurer of Montpelier Ruritan Club, member of Montpelier Jaycees; Industrial Development Authority Committee Hanover County; Hanover County Police Benevolent Association; Citizens Advisory Committee under Governor John Dalton; Ashland Kiwanis Club; The Hanover Club.

Board of Directors, NationsBank; and vice president of Camptown Charities. Jack worked hard, played hard, laughed a lot and brought strength to his family and friends simply by being himself. He was generous and kind-hearted but if you crossed him you would get a good “covering.” He was a legend whose shoes will be impossible to fill. Jack was blessed with a wonderful life and his family is grateful to have been loved by such an amazing person. His was a life well lived and the world will be a less interesting place without him and he will be greatly missed. “If a nonprofit wants to come in and keep all the ticket sales and keep any of the proceeds from that then they would probably have to come and pay to use the theater and that portion would just pay for cleaning, and for light operation, projector and just the ongoing use.

The cost just to turn the theater on and that cost has to be paid for,” Amos said.

Amos also said the town could potentially keep this new nonprofit funded by collecting 1 to 2 percent of the meals taxes, some of which would be generated by the new restaurant Waukeshaw Development proposed be a part of the theater renovation project.

Clark Mercer, a member of The Ashland Main Street’s Theater Committee, was the last person to speak at the public input work session.

Since the theater had been gifted to the town, residents and members of the ASMA have placed $40,000 to $50,000 of their own equity into the building, putting new messages on the marquee, bringing it up to fire code, and getting new movie posters, Mercer said.

“We’ve worked in good faith and all along the questions we’ve asked are ‘What are the goals of this theater?’ and we’ve heard ‘foot traffic’ and ‘to generate some buzz,’ get people in there, Mercer said. “We’ve had 60 events, which if you look at the pro forma for year one under a for-profit development, that’s approximately the same number of events.

Mercer said he plans to present an alternative proposal to the feasibility study plan on behalf of The Ashland Main Street Theater Committee at the next public input work session, which was scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, at Town Hall.

Two particular attendees that showed up as immigrants and walked away as U.S. citizens were a brother and sister, Abasiu and Ossai Muhammad, from Afghanistan.

Being able to become an American means “a lot, everything, I mean that’s the goal that we came here to become a citizen and work hard,” Abasiu Muhammad said.

“We’ve been through so much, we came from Afghanistan, so we came from a civil war, my parents went through very difficult times, not just financially but just security

and safety. Coming to the United States and feeling safe and secure and welcomed — you know welcomed by this country — it’s a big honor,” Abasiu Muhammad’s sister Ossai Muhammad said.

“I had an opportunity to go to school; I’m currently in Pharmacy School,” she said. “My brother who never had education, he was able to get his GED, go to school. … All the doors are open, you know. I came here, we didn’t speak English, we didn’t have education, but we [are] working towards it, so it’s a great honor to be here.”

For the second year, Daniel Johnson, board member of the Montpelier Arts and Activities Center, led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Johnson said his favorite part about being involved in the naturalization ceremony is seeing “The little children, they don’t know what’s going on, but to think the new life that’s going to be afforded

them, I love seeing the little children,” he said.

Following their naturalization oath, Magistrate Judge David J. Novak congratulated the new American citizens saying, “As former president Teddy Roosevelt stated, ‘Americanism is a question of principles of idealism of character, it is not a matter of birthplace, or creed, or line of descent.’ So today you have sworn an oath of allegiance to far more than a government; you have confirmed your belief in opportunity and unlimited horizons, a fundamental belief that all people are free, free to pursue their dreams.”

Dozens of students from Trinity Episcopal School also attended the ceremony, and, following the Pledge of Allegiance, congratulated each new United States citizen and gifted them with a small American flag.

Patrick Henry plucks Eagles in 35-21 win

ASHLAND – Patrick Henry’s fans attended their home game Friday night making a gracious gesture toward visiting Mills Godwin – wearing white in memory of a Eagles football player, who died the week before from injuries sustained in a body surfing accident.

In the six minutes after the opening kickoff, the Patriots defense was gracious, too, yielding an opening drive touchdown to the Eagles.

After that, though, Patrick Henry spent less time being gracious and more time taking advantage of four interceptions as the Patriots scored the next five touchdowns and claimed a 35-21 victory.

The “White Out” was held in memory of Tyler Wentz, who was injured on a beach on Bald Head Island, North Carolina, on Aug. 27. Wentz spent the next two weeks in a coma before succumbing on Sept. 13.

While both squads were united for Team Tyler, neither Patrick Henry nor Mills Godwin let it get in the way of hard-hitting football.

“It was physical. I thought our kids played hard,” said Patriots’ head coach Bryan Davis, whose team won despite being flagged for more than a dozen penalties. “We put our-

After struggling to stop the Eagles on their first series, the Patrick Henry defense made well-tuned adjustments that not only stopped Mills Godwin on downs, but also forced rushed throws by the Eagles’ starting quarterback Nicholas Grossman

and backup Jacob Edwards.

The pressure yielded four interceptions – two of which led to Patriots’ scores.

Mills Godwin coach Logan McPherson said his team may have been flat after a near upset at Atlee the week before.

“I think we were a bit happy with what we did last week,” McPherson said. “We came out,

we played a great against a very good Atlee team. I think we may have been a little bit satisfied with what we accomplished in that game and weren’t quite as focused as we needed to be tonight.”

Aside from being aggressive, the officiating proved mysterious at times – such as two inadvertent whistles that led to the

recall of two would-be Patrick Henry touchdowns. The third attempt proved the charm, however, as the Patriots tied the score on Justin McGowan’s 1yard run and Logan Bulthuis’ point-after.

Wilkinson leads Hawks past Atlee, PH golfers

GLEN ALLEN – Hanover golfer Ward Wilkinson, with 1under-par 35, gave the Hawks just what they needed to edge a remarkably consistent Atlee on the Raiders’ home course in a match that included Patrick Henry on the front nine at The Crossings Thursday.

The Hawks rolled a 156 to Atlee’s 159. Patrick Henry came in third with a 173.

The other three Hanover scorers – Cole Hodges with a 39 and Robert Martin and Jack Proctor with 41 apiece – rolled a combined score of 121.

The Raiders’ final three scorers – Erica Whitehouse, Timmy Shields and Daniel Anderson – each rolled a 40 for a combined score of 120, one stroke better than Hanover’s lower trio.

The difference between the two teams lay in the score of the teams’ top scorer, with Atlee’s Jacob Harmon four strokes back of Wilkinson.

“It’s not too bad, but it could

have been better,” Wilkinson said of his score. “That’s how golf goes.”

Wilkinson said he likes the pressure of playing against other top golfers, such as Atlee’s Whitehouse and Patrick Henry’s Andrea Dill, who finished second with a 2-over 38.

“It was a lot of fun playing that well,” Wilkinson said.

“When you’re playing with people that are good, you especially play better. Erica’s good.

Andrea’s good. They’re both very good competitors.”

Atlee coach Steve Thompson expected a close match.

“It was close last time,” Thompson said. “It’s a great matchup and it’s going to be great for both teams going into the conference [tournaments].”

He said the Hawks overtook the Raiders on the final holes.

“Everything was going pretty evenly throughout and then they got us on the last couple of holes,” Thompson said. “It’s a learning experience and, like I said, it’s great going forward because that’s the kind of pres-

sure they’re going to be under in the conference tournament.”

Patrick Henry coach Dave Hudak said the course, while not as hilly as the Patriots’ and Hawks’ home course at Hanover Country Club, is challenging in its own way.

“You have to have all your shots,” Hudak said. “You don’t have to go banging it off the tee.

You have to be smart and keep it in the short grass, or you can get some big numbers.

The highlight of the day, however, happened to Hanover’s Jimmy Hill. Hill didn’t make the Hawks’ top four, but he got the day’s top shot – and ace on the sixth hole.

He teed off with a 7-iron and it cleared the 153 yards to the green, taking two hops and rolling into the hole.

It took Hill a while to realize what happened.

MECHANICSVILLE – Hanover and Patrick Henry engaged in quite the slugfest to open their boys volleyball match on the Hawks’ home court Tuesday night.

Hanover won the first game 36-34, but the Patriots took over afterward, playing evenly while the Hawks struggled to regain the momentum in their favor.

In the end, the steadier team won the match, as Patrick Henry edged its hosts 34-36, 2519, 25-20, 25-19.

lack of fight in either team.

“Both teams fought real hard in the first game. It was a great first game,” Carrano said. “We lost it – the other team played great – but we came back with a vengeance. We worked hard the rest of the three games. We didn’t let up, ever, and got the lead and didn’t give it up.”

Craft beers on tap at State Fair Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com DOSWELL — Those attending the 2015 State Fair of Virginia will have two midway options: experiencing Midway Madness, the thrilling, expansive ride and game area; and enjoying Virginia Midway, the fair’s ultra-popular signature craft beer.

The tasty wheat beer, made by Midnight Brewery in Goochland County, will once again be featured each day of the 10-day event, which opened Tuesday, Sept. 25.

The special brew will be joined by beers from eight other regional craft breweries, as well as Virginia-made cider and traditional beers.

New to the fair for 2015 are beers from Richmond’s Ardent Craft Ales and Old Bust Head Brewing Co. in Warrenton.

Center of the Universe Brewing Co. in Ashland will be joining brews from newly named Brothers Craft Brewing in Harrisonburg (formerly Three Brothers), Devils Backbone Brewing Co. in Nelson County, Richmond’s Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery in Goochland County and O’Connor Brewing Co. in Norfolk.

Nelson’s County’s Bold Rock Hard Cider will be served as well.

“The beer culture continues to expand in Virginia and across the nation,” Greg Hicks, the fair’s vice president of communications, said.

“Craft beer here is truly a Virginia agricultural product, with some locations growing or sourcing local malted barley, hops and flavor adjuncts like local honey, herbs, pumpkins and fruit.

“Our mission is to showcase the best of Virginia agriculture, and this industry is an expanding part of it.”

Virginia is home to 121 breweries, up from just 44 in 2012.

“By putting emphasis on local ingredients, the craft beer industry is growing their connection to Virginia’s agriculture community in a big way, and our farmers are keen to supply them with the products they need to make their outstanding beers,” Virginia Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Todd Haymore said July 30 during Hardywood’s announcement of its expansion to Goochland County’s West Creek Office Park.

At that same event, Gov. Terry McAuliffe said the craft brewing industry “has been spectacular for the commonwealth of Virginia. It equates to about $623 million a year of economic activity. It equates to over 8,000 jobs.”

Nationally, there were 3,739 breweries operating as of June 30, an increase of 699 since 2014, according to the Brewers Association.

Virginia Midway has been a hit since it was first unveiled at Midnight Brewery’s tasting room in the summer of 2014. Since then, more and more aficionados have begun requesting the beverage, noted owner Trae Cairns.

“We don’t make Midway year-round, so when we are out people keep asking when it’s coming back,” Cairns said. “Wheat beer is easy on the palate, so it can appeal to a large audience — from non-craft beer drinkers to the most sophisticated beer followers.”

This year’s State Fair of Virginia will run through Oct. 4. Tickets and fair information are available at StateFairVa.org.

Tickets also may be purchased at Walgreens locations throughout Virginia.

The State Fair is held each fall at its permanent home at The Meadow Event Park in Caroline County.
