Hartgrove presented a “State of the Center of the Universe” to the crowd at Birdsong Hall on the campus of Randolph-Macon College.

government experience, Hartgrove talked about the theatre, which was donated to the town in November 2013. He noted that the Main Street group has used the facility since it was donated for a variety of events.

County tourism website promotes events HANOVER — Did you know that the Hanover County tourism website (www.visithanoverva.com) lists arts and cultural events happening in Hanover County?

Events that are sought for listing include concerts, theatre, literary events, dance, art exhibitions, festivals and public sporting events.

You can view the event listing at http://www.visitrichmondva.com/ hanover/events/. You can submit events

at http://www.visitrichmondva.com/ hanover/events/submit-events/.

Those submitting events are encouraged to make sure your event meets these specifications and is relevant to visitors before submitting.

Events must be open to the public and of interest to potential visitors.

Meetings, most fundraisers and membership-only events will not be listed.

Events outside Hanover County will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Richmond Region Tourism is unable to list classes and educational workshops due to the sheer volume of information that could be submitted.

Submissions must be received at least one month in advance; earlier is preferred. Listings are free and inclusion is up to the discretion of Visit Hanover.

School supply drive for needy students underway HANOVER -- In the middle of their summer vacation, the Hanover Youth Service Council (HYSC) is coordinating a county-wide school supply drive.

All supplies benefit Hanover’s elementary, middle and high school students in need.

The school supply drive started July 15 and runs through Aug. 14, ending with a live collection from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 14 at the Kroger on 9351 Atlee Road in Mechanicsville.

HYSC is collecting generic backpacks, composition books, supply boxes, two-pocket folders, glue sticks, erasers, dividers, durable binders, supply boxes, pencil pouches, notebooks, hi-lighters, crayons, pencils, markers, colored pencils, loose leaf paper, scissors, sanitizing wipes, dry erase markers, hand sanitizer, tissues, index cards and any other school supplies.

“To ensure that we maximize the impact the drive has on the schools, our department intern Jessica Parks and youth volunteer Christine Minozzi have spoken to each school’s counselor to determine what supplies are needed most” David Duck, HYSC advisor and youth services specialist with the Hanover County Department of Community Resources, said.

Arrest made in June 27 homicide Staff Report news@mechlocal.com HANOVER — Justin Valentino Mason was arrested and charged with first degree murder and use of a firearm in connection with the June 27 murder of Craig Michael Bates.

According to Maj. Michael J. Trice, the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office notified the United States Marshals Service in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Aug. 4, of a possible location of Mason.

The U.S. Marshals Service located and arrested Mason in the City of Richmond without incident.

Mason, a 25–year-old resident of Richmond, was charged in relation with the June 27 shooting death of 30-

year-old Craig Michael Bates, which occurred in the 1500 block of Mickie Town Road near Rockville. He has been charged with first degree murder and use or display of a firearm in the commission

of a felony. Mason was taken to the Pamunkey Regional Jail where he was being held without bond.

“I am proud of the efforts of our investigative team and the efforts of our law enforcement partners in the region including the U.S. Marshals Service for their efforts up to this point. Although an arrest has been made, we will continue to make sure all evidence is identified to ensure support of a successful prosecution,” said Col. David R. Hines, sheriff.

The Old Dominion EMS Alliance (ODEMSA) included Firefighter/Medic Craig Bodette (currently assigned to Rockville Fire Company 9) among their 2015 Regional EMS Awards recipients on Saturday, July 25. A career firefighter, he earned honors for a Skin Cancer Awareness program he has developed. He took ODEMSA’s regional award in their Outstanding Contribution to EMS Health and Safety category. The ceremony and presentation took place at ODEMSA’s annual picnic and social. Bodette and his educational program (aimed largely at Emergency Responders) were acknowledged among a strong field of Central Virginia’s EMS providers, managers and educators. “It is a pleasure having Craig recognized for this informative program he has created,” Cris Leonard of Hanover Fire-EMS said.

ASHLAND -- Chip, a former Hanover Humane Society pup, recently visited with the young campers at the Martial Arts World in the Ashland-Hanover Shopping Center.

During the visit, the camp attendees heard Chip’s story of how he and his family made their way to Hanover Humane.

They also learned about the Hanover Humane Society’s animal adoption, education and prevention programs, as well as the many activities that the organization undertakes in the Richmond metropolitan area.

After a brief presentation, the young campers were able to handle Chip and feed him his favorite treats: carob chips and Cheerios.

To show their appreciation for the visit, the young campers presented Chip with various donations for the animals in Hanover Humane’s Adoption Program.

Weighing benefits of growth

By Melody Kinser Managing Editor While one must respect the devotion embraced by those who prefer the rural lifestyle, there’s another side to that issue. And, sadly, it’s the deterioration – or near death — of a community.

At least twice a year, there is the ritual of heading to the hometown in the hills of West Virginia. It’s a small city that once thrived due to the success of the coal mining industry.

However, as the coal has been mined and Environmental Protection Agency regulations have changed, so has the life once known to those who call Logan, West Virginia, a little city situated in a valley, home.

This is where mixed emotions surface, because there is sympathy and understanding for those in our county who want to maintain that rural pristine sense of the place they lovingly call home.

What about growth and the future?

Hanover County is fortunate – oh, so fortunate – to know that businesses and people want to locate here. We have so many positives to our benefit – and we want to expand on what makes this area so special.

edge and, to a degree, will defer to residents in areas that remain untouched by development. And that’s the way most seem to want it. How do we challenge or question their motives?

With a great deal of sadness, thoughts turn to my hometown and what it once was and what it now is.

Dying seems to be the first word that comes to mind.

The woes of the mining industry and the generations who toiled in the earth to provide coal for energy purposes have become national news from Logan.

Storefronts are boarded, buildings are crumbling, and streets are lonely. There’s a criminal element that didn’t exist before.

We are blessed with growth and attracting the attention of businesses that ensures we will be able to continue to enjoy Hanover County’s strong tax base.

I won’t deny it: There are mixed signals here, because I know what we have to gain – and what we have to lose.

As the Hanover County Planning Commission and the Hanover County Board of Supervisors continue to weigh the pros and cons of how we move forward with progress, we have a wish for the wisdom to lead while listening to the desires of those they serve.

Teacher: county losing talent because value isn’t acknowledged I would like to thank Ragan Phillips for his guest commentary in the July 22, 2015, edition of The Mechanicsville Local. Everything Mr. Phillips wrote in support of Hanover County Public Schools’ teachers is true from my experience as a parent and a teacher in this county.

At the end of his commentary Phillips asked for two things: citizen letters of support for our teachers and letters of concern about our school system. I wrote the letter below following graduation this past June. I had not sent it yet, but now seems like the right time because it communicates my concern for our school system because of the mistreatment of one of my children’s most esteemed teachers.

Please read below: I am an English teacher in Hanover County, but I am writing this letter as a parent. I have been aware over this year that Hanover High School has suffered more than one occasion where a teacher’s integrity has been called into question based on classroom decisions. Sometimes, I will agree, that is appropriate.

However, the recent loss of an honored and much loved English teacher begs the question of when does such micromanagement go too far? My oldest two children will name this teacher as the teacher who taught them to write.

He challenges his students, and is honored time and time again as a distinguished educator by Hanover scholars.

I have taught with Michael Goodrich-Stewart, and have nothing but respect for his teaching and the intelligence and compassion he brings to the classroom.

Mr. GS (as he is lovingly called by his students) will be teaching English in Henrico County next fall. Their gain is certainly our loss, and that is what brings me to the purpose of this letter. I won’t go into the details of why this individual left because it isn’t my story to tell, but many Hanover High School parents, teachers and students know.

In a nutshell, this teacher left Hanover County because he did not feel supported. Since then, three other English teachers have left Hanover High School for other locations.

The AP Physics teacher is leaving as well, and these are only the ones I know about. That speaks volumes.

I sat at graduation today, and it was lovely to see my students and the faculty I work with beaming with pride in accomplishment. Dr. Jamelle Wilson [superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools at the time] spoke of how wonderful it is to live in a community that values its

educators.

I hope this is true, but over the past few years of budget cuts and increased workload, it just doesn’t feel that way.

Hanover High School (and Hanover County) has lost some talented teachers because they did not feel valued.

I urge the Hanover County community to pay attention to who makes the decisions that govern our schools.

No teacher should feel so unsupported by an administration and a county governing board that we lose him or her to surrounding counties. Surrounding counties already pay teachers more and work them less.

We should be doing all we can to keep the teachers who have decided to “do more with less.” I think our children deserve that.

Rural lifestyle lost in 1970s I’ve read everything on this and find so many appalling things. I have seen so much happen throughout my life here but this is the worst. The Rutland development was bad enough. Going back a few years the word was we build up U.S. 360 and leave one area, U.S. 301, with a Mechanicsville address alone.

Now all that changed. In fact, the loss of a rural lifestyle was lost in the 1970s. Let’s look back.

In 1962, I think we had one traffic light, which was in Ashland. At that time, most school kids lived on a farm.

Ten years later, you’re probably down to 20 percent on a farm. Our fast food was Holt’s on 360. No fast food today was as good. Every visit you’ll see your friends. see LETTERS, pg. 13

Kenneth Ray Blaylock Sr., 86, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 2, 2015. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert P. and Cora Baber Blaylock; brothers, Thomas and Robert Blaylock; and sisters, Nancy Maxey, Cora Poole and Isabel Vestel. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Janet B. Blaylock; three children, Kenneth Ray Blaylock Jr. (Sharyn), Shari Yorke (Jeffrey) and Shelly Noble (Donald); seven grandchildren, Jeremy and Helen Yorke, Lydia and Jake Noble, Kenny Ray, Charlie and Sam Blaylock; siblings, Albert Stafford Blaylock, William “Billy” Blaylock and Lillian Roudabush; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. vived by her husband, Todd Broaddus, and her children, Lee Anne Orndorff (Randy) of Culpeper, Frankie Dressler (Christi) of Mechanicsville and her step-daughter, Jolyn Hooper (Ray) of King William; her grandchildren, Josh Orndorff (Michelle), Jordan Orndorff, Sydney Johnstone, Andrew Dressler, Bradley and Blair Childress, and Ray and Jamie Hooper; her great-grandson, Julian Orndorff; her siblings, Butch Sheets (Kay) and Barbara Marsland (Bob); her nieces, Dana Joseph (Michael) and Tracy Ancarrow (Jason); her nephew, Greg Sheets (Colleen); her dear Aunt Polly Sheets; extended family, Spike and Virginia Dressler and Conley and Liz Taylor; and many more family members and friends. She then moved to Richmond and graduated from Highland Springs High School in 1957.

Her activities in high school included varsity basketball,

cheerleading, May court princess and homecoming queen.

Myrna was full of life and energy and she never met a stranger. Her smile was contagious. She loved the Lord, her family and friends and was kind and caring to all.

She exhibited a willingness to face the many challenges of life with determination and much joy. Her lifelong career was in the insurance field where she worked at Hartford, Zurich American Life, Unum, and Provident Mutual. She retired in 2001.

She loved to travel especially to be with family and friends.

Her hobbies included bridge, bicycle riding, line dancing, jet skiing, NASCAR, Duke and Randolph-Macon College basketball, sequence, cornhole, time at Gwynn’s Island and organizing activities for friends and her Sunday School class. She played softball, volleyball, bowled and loved teaching her grandchildren to play ping pong until they all could beat her.

She enjoyed attending her family’s sporting events and was each one’s biggest fan.

She was a president of the

Mechanicsville Christian Woman’s Club and a Queen Mother of the Good Time Red Hatters. She loved her church, Cool Spring Baptist in Mechanicsville, where she has been an active member since 1983. She was a leader in the Seeker Sunday School class and was involved in the prayer ministry of the church. Myrna’s loving spirit and kind heart will be greatly missed by her family, friends and all whose lives she touched. A Celebration of Life was held at 11 a.m.

ELIZABETH T. COX Elizabeth Theresa Cox died July 30, 2015, after a brief illness. She was 102.

The widow of the late Lt. Col. (retired U. S. Air Force) Curville W. Cox, she lived in Mechanicsville, although she recently was residing in an assisted living facility in Newburyport, Massachusetts.

Previously, they had lived for over 40 years in Hopedale, Massachusetts. She was known as Betty. She was born October 1, 1912, and grew up in an Irish family in Brookline, Massachusetts.

She was the youngest child of John and Nora (Riley) Magee and had five siblings, who predeceased her. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School. Betty met her husband in Framingham, Massachusetts, in 1946, and they married in March 1947.

When they wed he was stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

At his next station, at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, she hosted a radio program called “Air Force Wives.”

They moved to Hopedale, Massachusetts in the 1950s, with their two young sons,

and created strong ties to the community. Curville retired from the military in the late 1950s. Betty volunteered as a Cub Scout den mother, was active in Democratic politics, and was a member of First Congregational Church in Milford. She conceived of the idea for Hopedale’s annual Day in the Park Fine Arts Festival, sang in community musical productions, and was active in ecumenical church efforts. She held various part-time jobs at different times, including stints at a hat factory in Upton and selling women’s coats and accessories at Jordan Marsh in Framingham. She wrote a column for the Milford Daily News called “A Walk Down Main Street” and hosted a program on WMRC radio station in Milford called “The Betty Cox Show.” She later worked as a correspondent for The Worcester Telegram and Evening Gazette (later the Telegram & Gazette), covering Hopedale news and politics and sometimes tangling with the town’s Board see OBITUARIES, pg. 8

She was an amateur artist, and at age 100 she drew a still life in pastels and had it reproduced for her Christmas cards. She had an intense interest in current events and government affairs, including foreign affairs. Most of all, she enjoyed being with people and talking with them about any number of subjects. She and her husband relocated from Hopedale to Mechanicsville in the late 1990s in order to live near their youngest son, Tim, and his wife, Linda, and their three grandchildren, Nathan, Marybeth, and David. She lived for a time in Covenant Woods, where she observed her 100th birthday with family and friends.

She is survived by her sons, John and his wife, Gay, of Amesbury, Massachusetts,

and Tim and his wife, Linda, of Mechanicsville; four grandchildren, Gideon Cox of Radnor, Pennsylvania, Nathan Cox of Mechanicsville, and his fiance, Ivelis Varela of Rockledge, Florida, Marybeth Pendleton and her husband, Terence, of Henrico, and David Cox and his wife, Heather, of Fredericksburg; and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial event will be held at a date to be announced.

LINDSAY KOENIG Lindsay Edward “Linny” Koenig, 55, of Beaverdam, passed away on Monday, August 3, 2015. He was preceded in death by his sister, Laurel M. Koenig. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Mary Kay Koenig; parents, Edward and Rosewell Koenig; sister, Leslie Koenig-Stack (Frank Rizzo); nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; his cat, Pumpkin; and many loving friends. Linny was a graduate of Benedictine High School, Class of 1978.

He was employed by Bass Pro Shops, working in the marine electronics and boating departments. Linny and his wife enjoyed canoeing, fishing and boating. He loved

anything that pertained to water. He was a loving husband, son and friend.

Teens in drug court program paint, dedicate mural that parallels their recovery journey

By Meredith Rigsby News Editor ASHLAND — From April until mid-June, seven teens in the Hanover Juvenile Drug Court program worked together on a mural located on a blank wall in a newly refurbished kitchen at the Hanover Community Services Ashland Office.

At the start, the seven virtual strangers were unsure of the project and one another. But they decided to participate and came up with the idea of painting a mural that would directly mirror the journey and the struggle of going through recovery.

The mural provided them an opportunity to bond over their struggle and to help each other grow in ways that they previously may not have been able to.

“None of us had ever really talked much before. I mean we see each other three times a week, but we didn’t talk much, we didn’t get along about anything; we didn’t connect,” Josie Gilman, a 16-year-old in the program who helped paint the mural, said.

The Hanover County Drug Court program is an intensive outpatient substance abuse program that combines intensive substance abuse treatment with accountability through the court system.

Participants are generally in the program from a year to sometimes two years, Spencer Powers, art therapist with the Juvenile Drug Court and facilitator of the program, said.

The mural shows silhouettes of six people holding hands and walking into the sunset.

Throughout the evolution of the project, the teens decided to paint one of the people so that it looked as though they were falling.

The idea was that the person stumbling accurately communicates the struggle that people experience when going through recovery.

Painting the mural, becoming closer and sharing their experiences, the teens realized that they were all in the struggle together.

“In the recovery area you have to decide whether or not you want to get clean or stay sober, and then you go through the hard times where it gets difficult, you don’t know exactly what you’re going to paint, you mess something up,” Gilman said. “Same thing in recovery, you go through hard times. And then when you’re painting and you mess up something or you can’t do something that somebody else can, that’s somebody helping you and picking you up, just like in the mural.”

During the months that the teens were painting, one in particular was having a difficult time and struggling on his journey. Instead of painting the silhouette of a person, he decided to paint the silhouette of a wolf.

He wanted this to symbolize that he felt like a lone wolf in life, but recognized that he still needed a pack to get through hard times, William Brenzovich Sr., chairman of the Community Services Board, said.

is, when we got the opportunity to do it a lot of the kids were like, ‘I don’t know if we can do this, we’ve never painted a mural before,’ ” Powers said. “In retrospect, many of them have said it kind of paralleled the way that they felt about sobriety. … Working together like they did on the mural, they’re doing it.”

My big concern is that during this time, even though we are not going to expect to have

bike races going through Ashland, it is an opportunity for Ashland to shine and there’s a

At the meeting, council did approve Phase II of the Streetscape project, scheduled to begin in mid-August and expected to be completed in six to eight weeks.

Charles Hartgrove, town manager, responded to citizen concerns, saying, “It’s the third phase that we’ve done and it’s also the third phase that we’ve done with the same contractor. And we’ve had, I think, pretty good success with Talley & Armstrong being a good partner with the town, with the property owners, with the business owners.” see STREETSCAPE, pg. 11

“I’m happy to work personally along with public works and planning and economic development staff. I’m trying to find alternatives to make this as painless as possible. In the long-term though, I will say that I think this is a very positive project. I think it helps the aesthetics of downtown, it affects the storm water drainage, it gives us safe, walkable sidewalks, it gives us street lamps that we desperately need on that side of the tracks,” Hartgrove said.

The majority of the Streetscape Phase II construction will be carried out by the town’s annual contractor, Talley & Armstrong.

Ashland also will rely on A&J Electric for electric services, Venture Electric for installing lane lights, RSG Landscaping for landscaping design and installation and Halder Surveys for survey staking.

The cost of the project is not to exceed $240,000. Funding is available in the Capital Project Fund – Downtown Sidewalks, which has a current balance of approximately $415,000.

In addition, a large portion of proj-

ect expenditures qualify for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) maintenance funding. The budget estimate also includes approximately 25 percent for contingency.

Because Talley & Armstrong was able to complete the police department parking lot construction more quickly than anticipated, Phase II of the Streetscape project could potentially be completed in early to mid-October, Ingrid Stenbjorn, town engineer, said.

Following approval to begin construction on the Streetscape Phase II project, Chief Douglas Goodman of the Ashland Police Department asked council to authorize the department’s purchase of four new vehicles, including three 2015 Dodger Chargers V6 and one 2015 small- to mid-size SUV (sport utility vehicle).

The four new vehicles would be covered under the police department’s allocated budget of $109,951 and would replace four older police vehicles that the department would like to retire.

The total cost for the three 2015 Dodge Charger Patrol sedans is $71,025 and the cost of the 2015 small- to mid-size SUV should not exceed $22,000.

During discussion, council member Steve Trivett thanked the police department for providing the council transportation during National Night Out and also brought attention to police decoy vehicles.

“I think it’s important for the citizens to know that you aren’t buying brand new vehicles and using them as decoy vehicles. Decoy vehicles serve a great purpose but they’re not fully purposed.”

Goodman agreed, “That’s the last stop on the hit parade before the auction line,” he said.

During the Aug. 4 meeting, town council also approved ORD2015-05, presented

by Steve Mulroy of VML/VACO Finance, and Joshua Farrar, town finance director, which authorizes participation by the Town of Ashland in the VACO/VML Virginia Investment Pool (VIP) Trust Fund.

The Virginia Investment Pool is a shortterm fixed income pool with a current balance of approximately $200 million. Town staff recommended approval of the Joint Powers Ordinance and believes that investing in both the Local Government Investment Pool (LGIP) and Virginia Investment Pool (VIP) would provide the opportunity for greater

return on investment, while also maintaining the town’s security and liquidity goals.

At the beginning of the meeting, town council presented a resolution marking the 20th anniversary of the Hanover/Ashland Triad/S.A.L.T. Council, a crime prevention partnership.

Council approved the consent agenda and Mayor George Spagna gave his report.

He noted a successful National Night Out and said the town is looking to set up a number of open public work sessions to discuss plans for the Ashland Theatre.

During Hartgrove’s report, he reviewed recommendations in regard to the municipal pool, touched on the progress of the VDOT Route 54/1 intersection construction project, and said the town attorney is working with Comcast to finalize a draft Cable Franchise Agreement for council’s consideration.

Vice Mayor Ned Henson did not attend the meeting.

There are still open positions on the town’s board of zoning appeals and economic development authority.

The next town council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18.

Dates to remember for Liberty Middle School Staff Report news@mechlocal.com ASHLAND – The administration at Liberty Middle School has released the following “dates to remember.” They are: Sept. 2 — Eagle Camp for rising 6th graders (9 a.m. to noon) Sixth grade students will be able to pick up their schedules, meet their homeroom teachers, see the building, open their lockers and meet new friends. The evening provides an opportunity to help students feel comfortable and ready to begin the school year.

Sept. 2 — Fees and Schedules Night (3 to 6 p.m.)

Seventh and eighth graders will be able to pick up their schedules, see the building and pay fees. Schedules are not distributed prior to the scheduled day and time for each grade level. However, fees may be paid for sixth graders during the seventh and eighth grade Fee and Schedule Night from 3 to 6 p.m.

Locker assignments for seventh and eighth graders are given out by homeroom teachers on the first day of school.

Bring your completed physical on your first day of tryouts and turn it in to one of the coaches that afternoon. Sports physicals cannot be accepted early.

Students without a completed physical form are not allowed to participate in tryouts and should not stay after school.

multi-use entertainment facility, Ashland Main Street Association has been showing movies, holding concerts. We’ve seen the jazz concert bands from all the public schools; we’ve seen bluegrass bands; we’ve seen movies like ‘Jaws’ and ‘Grease’ and a lot of other special events,” Hartgrove said.

He also discussed the town’s demographics.

The Town of Ashland is a little over 7 square miles, has almost 7,300 citizens, approximately 2,800 homes and a growth rate of about 1 percent annually.

Ashland is served by Hanover County Public Schools and residents also have the option to attend Hanover Academy, located east of Interstate 95.

In a recent Richmond Magazine article, the Town of Ashland was named one of the best places for “empty nesters,” Hartgrove said.

Ashland has about 866 businesses and benefits from being located so close to Interstate 95.

“Our location is absolutely the best thing we have going for us,” Hartgrove said. “You are in one day’s drive within 60 percent of the population of this country. We’ve been very fortunate that that drives a lot business creation.”

The Town of Ashland is financially set up a little differently than Hanover County, which is driven primarily by real estate and personal property tax revenue, Hartgrove said.

With over 1,100 hotel rooms and a little over 50 restaurants in Ashland, its economy and its budget is driven by meals and lodging taxes.

Ashland has a total general fund budget of about $8.6 million and a capital projects fund of a little over $4 million, which is a pay-as-you-go fund, Hartgrove said.

The majority of Ashland’s operating budget is made up of local revenues, mostly consisting of grants from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Hartgrove said.

“Any town with a population of more than 3,300 people by state code maintains its own roads. So we have 114 land miles of roads here in the community, which we are responsible for. VDOT (Virginia Department of Transportation) passes through per land mile a certain amount of money and that’s close to $2 million. With the exception of the Interstate 95 bridge and Route 1/54, all the other road projects are driven by Ashland Town Council and ultimately taken care of by the staff.”

The lion’s share of the town’s operating budget goes to the Ashland Police Department and public works, Hartgrove said.

The town also operates a municipal pool, a skateboard park, walking trails and six parks.

The State of the Center of the Universe was addressed by Ashland Town Manager Charles Hartgrove during last Wednesday’s Hanover Business Council Networking Breakfast.

Hartgrove also talked about some of the town’s challenges, including a recent issue with hotel residents utilizing hotel rooms for longterm stay rather than for transient use, 30 days or less.

“It’s a public safety issue, it’s a humanitarian issue; it’s an economic issue,” Hartgrove said.

This is not just an Ashland problem -- this is a problem throughout the country. We’ve studied several communities.”

In June, Ashland became home to the Republic National Distribution Center, the second largest privately owned distribution company in the nation, which made a $17 million investment in the Center of the Universe.

“What spurred the ability for a company like Republic National to come here was the original investment by the Vitamin Shoppe in October 2013,” Hartgrove said. “That’s a 311,000-squarefoot facility, almost a $40 million investment and eventually will employ over 107 people.”

Ashland also is home to the Dominion

Resources Innovation Center (DRIC), which began as a green tech incubator start-up and has since evolved into a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) incubator, Hartgrove said.

The center recently moved from Business Lane to the former Ashland Volunteer Fire Department, located on the corner of Duncan Street and Hanover Avenue.

Hartgrove also talked about some of Ashland’s small businesses, which are the backbone of the community, including Sugar Fix Bakery, which recently opened.

Ashland previously received a $25,000 Feasibility Grant to conduct studies for the Department of Housing and Community Development and a few months ago received a $500,000 from the Industrial Revitalization Fund for the Ashland Theater.

The town is working with potential private sector partners and the public to decide how to move forward with that investment.

In addition, Hartgrove said Ashland is working to extend dark fiber cable for broadband from along Interstate 95 into the town to serve residents and local businesses.

He showcased some of the projects that town council has invested in during recent years, including the restoration of the municipal lot, which is owned by the town, revitalization of College Park residential neighborhood streets and the town’s Streetscape Project, in an effort to make Ashland more aesthetically pleasing and to combat challenges with storm water drainage.

He also extended his thanks to Robert Lindgren, R-MC president, and introduced Joe Topham, the town’s new business retention and expansion manager.

Before Hartgrove’s program, Ashland Mayor George Spagna told the gathering, “It’s a very optimistic time for us [Ashland].”

A friend on 360 lived in a house with other residences everywhere. They held out to where businesses were all around them.

Drive on Pole Green Road and look for old brick houses and frame houses. Imagine just those houses. That’s how great a community we had. I can cite tons of more examples.

This is the definition of progress: It’s the regression and destruction of a lifestyle where the people who have lived there all their lives have no vote!

The Hanover County Board of Supervisors gets to do anything in the name of money. Five years ago in mid-December the line in the 301 post office was zig-zagging out the door. I didn’t see anyone I knew.

These builders are worshiped like Gods. How about they go get a real job and quit ruining the lifestyles of the residences for money? Those who have been here for six decades or more should have more of a voice.

Let’s listen to great people like the recovered Grayson Kirby and all the others in his wonderful family rather than the approach of some saying this could pave the way for more development! Where do they think they are -- in Fairfax? Go there and get a taste of where we are going if it’s up to you.

You sympathized with nobody. Isn’t this like 650 residences? One million a year tax dollars but two kids per home -- that’s 1,300 school students.

How much does a school building cost? Does anyone think commercial builders care how much animal habitat is destroyed or extra traffic to lag behind of where so many have no idea how to drive?

All these builders care about is the major money -- not us or even the supervisors making the decision. They know the concessions they will eventually make but they must have a card to play later.

They know how to sell. Don’t the supervisors know this?

This development is going to be a truly negative situation for our county. What’s next? Let’s tear down Hanover Tavern and put up a Walmart. Can a builder talk us into that too? There is one area here that actually should be developed for tax revenue and that’s along Interstate 95 around Lakeridge. We have done a poor job attracting major outlets like what is farther south.

When Interstate 295 came through, 301 went to four lanes. We had an old west looking place where the Popeye’s is. Johnson’s market and a barber shop.

Chief Custalow’s son cut my hair. It’s like waking up one day and you’re not even in the same place.

Those who say let’s save the rural flavor: What rural flavor is that? Montpelier and Beaverdam are all we have left.

Girls lead the way for Patrick Henry golf

By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com ASHLAND – Andrea Dill and Shea Burch were among the leaders of Patrick Henry’s golf team last year.

The pair, then juniors, acquitted themselves admirably, ending their season at the Virginia High School League girls golf championships at Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria.

This year, the two seniors are the leadership.

“They’ve been on the team for three years,” said Patriots head coach Dave Hudak.

“They’re doing a good job out here being leaders. They’ve always had a group of seniors ahead of them, and they’ve plugged away. … They finished [last] season strong and I’m coming in with high expectations for them.”

Dill and Burch shared leadership with then-senior Jackson Clarke on last year’s team.

Clarke’s graduation took away some valuable experience.

“I think we had a little bit more experience, with Jackson Clarke being a very, very strong player as well as our No. 1 most of the year along with Andrea and Shea,” Hudak said. “The girls are playing well. If Rory [Ailor] comes along, it may be pretty close to last year. It’s hard to tell. It’s hard to replace somebody like Jackson, but I think

we have people with potential to do that.”

Dill and Burch will get a lot of help from underclassmen Ailor and T.J. Cox. Ailor is a rising sophomore.

“He played in probably 95 percent of the matches last year as a freshman,” Hudak said

of Ailor. “He’s looking to be a strong two or three player.”

Cox has less match experience.

“He only got to play one match last year, but he’s improved drastically,” Hudak said.

Hudak said those four

should form the core of the team. He’s hoping some of the younger players will be able to fill the other two spots in the match lineup.

Two years ago, Patrick Henry was assigned to Conference 16 as a result of the VHSL realignment, but it still

played a Colonial District regular-season schedule. This year, Patrick Henry plays a Capital District schedule in the regular season, but it will be joined in the Conference 16 tournament with another Hanover County team, Atlee.

Last year’s Raiders were

the county powerhouse, with six seniors on the squad along with the county’s only other contestant in the VHSL girls state championships, Erica Whitehouse, a sophomore who joined seniors Levi Brizendine and Matthew Sweeney in the team’s top three.

Of those, only Whitehouse and fellow rising junior Timmy Shields remain to take a leadership role on the team.

Atlee has had a coaching change, too. This summer, former coach Jamie Edwards stepped down, and head boys soccer coach Steve Thompson stepped up to succeed him.

“We pretty much lost everything,” Thompson said “It’s a very new and young team. So we’re just kind of building right now.”

Thompson expects Whitehouse and Shields to be competing for the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on the team. After that, the situation is much more fluid.

“The one and two kind of separate themselves,” Thompson said. “Then we fall into a little area where we have kind of a really good battle, which is going to be great for those kids, because every single time we go out, it’s a competition to see who’s going to qualify to play in the next match.”
