Police chief: update town’s hotel codes to combat crime By Meredith Rigsby News Editor ASHLAND – Police Chief Doug Goodman addressed the Town of Ashland’s hotel/motel codes and their impact on crime to Ashland Town Council during the July 7 regular meeting.

The number of police calls between 2013 and 2014 in Ashland increased over 15 percent compared to an average increase of about 6 to 7 percent between 2008 and 2013, Goodman said. He added that the influx of calls for service

is indicative of what he believes is an increase in long-term residency at motels. In spring 2009, Goodman and his staff worked with Nora Amos, director of planning and community development for Ashland, and zoning

staff and collaborated on a joint case where the town charged the owner of a local motel with a zoning violation. The motel was being occupied by a number of long-term residents and the charge stated that the see HOTEL, pg. 11

ASHLAND — In May 2014, the Virginia Department of Transportation began a project in Ashland to replace the Route 54 superstructure over Interstate 95 and approaches as needed. The replacement will raise the vertical clearance on northbound and southbound I-95 to 16.5 feet, according to VDOT’s website. The cost of the ongoing project is approximately $10 million and is expected to wrap up by November. As of June 11, VDOT had completed approximately three-fourths of the bridge structure and about half of the grading operations, Doug Kisamore, VDOT consee PROGRESS, pg. 5
