Via returns to school — not seeking re-election

Fourth festivities

SHLAND — When G. Ed Via III decided he wasn’t going to seek re-election to the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, the two-term Ashland District representative went back to school. He has enrolled at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College to audit some classes. And, even though he will serve through the end of the year, he is studying environmental biology. “I want to take American history and English literature,” Via said. “That’s what I majored in in college so I wanted to refresh my memory on some of those things. I do a lot of readings on Revolutionary Times, John Quincy Adams, John Adams, George Washington. I’m doing that.” Returning to college has been “absolutely wonderful,” Via said, because “I get to use their library. I can just sit and read all day long.” Via’s public service started in 1988 when former Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, then a member of the board of supervisors, appointed him to the Hanover County Parks and Recreation Commission. He spent 16 years with Parks and Rec. “When I first got on the Parks and Rec Commission,

Richardson takes helm of HCPS in interim capacity ASHLAND — Hanover County Public Schools welcomed Dr. Robert F. “Rick” Richardson Jr. last Wednesday as the school division’s newly appointed interim superintendent of schools. He recently was named to the interim position by the Hanover County School Board to serve until a permanent selection is made later this year.
