Via returns to school — not seeking re-election

Fourth festivities

A

SHLAND — When G. Ed Via III decided he wasn’t going to seek re-election to the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, the two-term Ashland District representative went back to school.

He has enrolled at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College to audit some classes. And, even though he will serve through the end of the year, he is studying environmental biology.

“I want to take American history and English literature,” Via said. “That’s what I majored in in college so I wanted to refresh my memory on some of those things.

I do a lot of readings on Revolutionary Times, John Quincy Adams, John Adams, George Washington. I’m doing that.”

Returning to college has been “absolutely wonderful,” Via said, because “I get to use their library. I can just sit and read all day long.”

Via’s public service started in 1988 when former Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, then a member of the board of supervisors, appointed him to the Hanover County Parks and Recreation Commission. He spent 16 years with Parks and Rec. “When I first got on the Parks and Rec Commission,

Richardson takes helm of HCPS in interim capacity ASHLAND — Hanover County Public Schools welcomed Dr. Robert F. “Rick” Richardson Jr. last Wednesday as the school division’s newly appointed interim superintendent of schools.

He recently was named to the interim position by the Hanover County School Board to serve until a permanent selection is made later this year.

Ashland keeps tradition alive with a festive Fourth

By Natalie Miller for The Hanover Local ASHLAND – The streets are filled and the sounds are celebratory – and that means it’s the Fourth of July in the Town of Ashland.

Festivities included the patriotic non-motorized parade, with local students and clubs represented. Also taking part were basset hounds and beagles, as well as other canines accompanied by their human companions. The Japanese and Latin academies marched in clothing representative of their

cultures and they chanted in their respective languages.

The red, white and blue procession ended with a town favorite, The Lawn Chair Brigade. Every year, this group marches proudly with their lawn chairs and performs choreographed, synchronized chair moves.

“The lawn chairs are the funniest part [of the parade],” Ashland resident Molly Strange-Boston said. This rising Liberty Middle school 7th grader is a veteran Fourth of July parade marcher, who, although she did participate

this year, attended the parade and the following events.

Post-parade festivities followed on the Hanover Arts and Activities Center lawn.

Residents visited booths supporting the Hanover Humane Society and local clubs.

Children enjoyed friendly games like the watermelon seed spitting contest and bean bag tosses.

Hanover County residents showed off their baking skills at the annual apple pie baking contest. A panel of volunteer judges tasted and rated the 19 submissions to choose the top pies.

“We judge based on things like taste, texture and appearance,” Ashland resident and contest judge Betty Laplace said.

Categories included Most Patriotic, Most Creative and even a Top Kids’ Pie. The five top pies were auctioned off after judging had finished and a top winner was chosen. This

year’s submissions included unconventional interpretations

“There really are no rules, just fun,” Laplace said.

This family has operated the Fourth of July pie stand for about 10 years.

“We like helping out the Arts and Activities Center,” Allan Funk said.

Down the track from the smoky grills and bustling crowd at the Center, the Pamunkey Regional Library held its annual Fourth of July book sale.

Readers found copies of lightly used literary classics and beach reads while catching up with friends and chatting with fellow book hunters. Monies raised from the book sale helps support the library’s programs and facility.

Those interested in the town’s history explored the Ashland museum, which displays several artifacts from the town’s humble beginnings as a train stop. The farmers’ market also remained open for vendors to sell their homegrown produce.

Review: ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ rocks as local talent wows the crowd

ANOVER – “Bye Bye Birdie” recently came to life on the stage at Hanover Tavern, thanks to the efforts of the Center Players.

For four days – Thursday through Sunday, June 25-28 – Michael Stewart’s 1960s musical featured the talents of students throughout Hanover County and neighboring counties.

The Center Players, whose members range in age from 6th to 12th grade, did an incredible job with Stewart’s Broadway hit.

Directors Lorie Foley and Patrick Warren chose to use the 1995 revised version of the musical. The storyline followed the original script and only a few songs differed from the 1960 version.

“Bye Bye Birdie” tells the story of the impact of heartthrob rock star Conrad Birdie being drafted into the military during the 1950s.

Though much of the musical is based on Birdie and his fame, the real story is that of Albert Peterson, a meek music industry worker played by 2015 Patrick Henry High School graduate, and his secretary/frustrated girlfriend, Rose Alvarez, played by LeeDavis High School junior Camilla Myers.

This musical, which is typically viewed in big theaters on Broadway, felt right at home on the Hanover Tavern’s smaller stage.

The small-town feel of the production added a special charm to the show that made it even more enjoyable than viewing the same musical on Broadway.

duction was local, including the Ashland-based directors, and the energetic musicians, Ashland residents Fred Horn and Dustin Pegram.

The show was certainly a community effort, as actors

not part of the Center Players offered their time to the show.

This particular production required children younger than 6th grade to perform, and the Players’ younger siblings were eager to step up and dance alongside their older counterparts.

The Center Players had six weeks to rehearse their lines and dance moves. They performed with sincere professionalism.

What is even more impressive is that these dedicated Center Players chose their passion for acting over beach trips and other summer vacation activities.

This outstanding cast did an excellent job of making audience members feel like part of the performance and fun. The actors clearly enjoyed every second of the show and seemed as though they would

Publisher Joy Monopoli said many requests from residents and business leaders prompted the decision to focus on those areas of Hanover County that do not receive The Mechanicsville Local, a popular weekly publication that has served eastern parts of the county since 1984.

“Our team has planned for this next venture in Hanover County with the same commitment and enthusiasm they have brought to The Mechanicsville Local for more than 30 years,” said Monopoli.

As a “sister publication” to The Mechanicsville Local, The Hanover Local will provide the same mix of coverage, touching

Audience members were caught up in a setting comparable to a close group of friends sharing their passion

In scenes with over 15 actors singing on stage, audience members could make eye contact with the young actors and even see the non-Center Player children catching their breath after a dance number.

Sunday’s show was especially memorable for the graduating high school seniors who took their final bow as actors with the Center. Carleigh

Luck, Joseph Sandler, Chance Johns and Katelyn Tate gave their all for this final performance.

Tate, a recent Patrick Henry graduate, stole the show in her role as Mrs. Mae Peterson, Albert Peterson’s obnoxiously overbearing mother. Tate brought the audience to tears with laughter through her snarky comments and outrageous actions -- even standing in a trash can and lamenting dramatically about how her son no longer loves her.

This show was absolutely delightful and proves that Hanover County is its own stage filled with talent and creativity.

Good things are happening in western Hanover. You are reading the first edition of The Hanover Local, a division of Richmond Suburban News that has for years published The Mechanicsville Local. It will be good to have another source of information, entertainment and advertising geared to the western districts of Hanover and Ashland.

This new paper is not the only good news about communications in western Hanover. For years we have heard of the need for high speed Internet in our end of the county, and finally it is coming.

The Hanover County Board of Supervisors approved two leases for Last Mile Internet service to use space on our county communication towers in Doswell and at Poor Farm Park.

There are other opportunities on the horizon with the goal of high speed Internet throughout South Anna and Beaverdam. As these services become available it is important that you, the consumer, take advantage of these new Internet opportunities.

encing economic growth. I am constantly asked when the outlet mall is coming and I wish I could give a definite date. With the new interchange at Interstate 95 and Lewistown Road finally under construction, I would expect the mall developers to plan around the completion of that project.

But we are not waiting!

With the restructuring of the private Community Development Bonds for Winding Brook, activity has taken off.

We have approved an indoor shooting range across from Bass Pro Shop. We also have a four-story Fairfield Inn in the works, as well as prospects for development of another 20 acres in the Winding Brook Development.

Talks are underway for additional development on the southern end of Lakeridge Parkway and the board just approved the rezoning of 94 acres north of the Northlake development.

This M2 zoning will make us competitive in the Richmond Region so that the next time an Amazon or Rolls Royce comes to the area we won’t be skipped over because we don’t have available sites.

We are looking at several other

sites to pre-zone, so we can continue to compete in the region. Stay tuned, economic development is just getting started. Expect good news over the next few years.

The schools in all of Hanover County are going to benefit from our five-year commitment to spend $28.5 million on much-needed repairs.

This summer the schools in western Hanover will see some special improvements.

Patrick Henry High School will see improvements in both gymnasiums with new crash pads and bleacher replacements. The wooden bleachers at the baseball field will be replaced with new aluminum ones.

Elmont Elementary School will get new interior painting to complement the window replacement and exterior painting that occurred last year.

South Anna Elementary School will get a facelift for the gym and cafeteria as well as a new floor for the gym.

Henry Clay Elementary School will get a new ceiling in the library as well as a lighting upgrade in the cafeteria. Beaverdam Elementary School, see COUNTY, pg. 8

n behalf of the town and people of Ashland, I would like to extend a Center of the Universe welcome to The Hanover Local. I am excited by the opportunity for our Hanover neighbors to stay current on happenings in Ashland and for those in the town to learn more about this wonderful county we all know as home.

Ashland offers quiet, safe neighborhoods and friendly walkable and bikeable streets. We have unique restaurants ranging from Jake’s Place to the Southern Soul Café, live music at Ashland Coffee and Tea and the Iron Horse, sum-

A lot of negotiations went on to get that property in line,� Via said. “We began building ball fields at Poor Farm Park and at Wayside Park. Pavilions were built at Poor Farm Park for picnics and that sort of thing for your family or reunions. County organizations use it as well as for their picnics,� he added.

Via recalled when Poor Farm Park hosted Easter egg hunts. “I worked on those for years when my children were really young.

They were involved with it too.�

He then put on his supervisor’s hat, pointing out property

He told me to think about it and I told him at that party that ‘If you’re serious, I can answer your question right now.

As a member of the planning commission, Via said he was “instrumental in getting the board to put utility lines under Creighton Road. My opinion was we need to take advantage of these things and be ready for growth when it comes. That was the way I approached the planning commission, where the county was moving towards and try to do things as smartly as we could so the county would continue to move forward in the direction that it should.�

He was on the planning commission from April 1, 2004, to 2008, when Ernst told him he wasn’t going to seek re-election to the board of supervisors. “There was a dilemma for me,� Via recalled. “I had never thought about running for public office so I did have to take some time to think about that and talk to some friends. I really wasn’t crazy about the idea and then I talked to a couple of close friends and one of them told me, ‘Ed, if you don’t do it, you’re always going to wonder what if you had.’ And so after much thought and deliberation, I decided to run.�

In 2008, he defeated opponents Kevin Damian and Steven Wright by 16 votes. There was a recount and the judges determined that the votes were legal. “To my knowledge, it was the first time someone won the office who was not a resident of the Town of Ashland,� Via said.

Little Leaguers earn return to state tourney

By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE – For a time, it looked bleak for the Ashland All-Stars intermediate team.

The defending champions, after taking an early lead in the Intermediate division championship game Friday night at Mechanicsville Little League, gave it up in the bottom of the fourth inning as they struggled defensively.

But they came back in thunderous fashion, scoring three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings and eight more in the seventh to put away Central Chesterfield 21-11.

Ashland had a 7-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth when Central Chesterfield took advantage of defensive mistakes to score nine runs and go ahead 10-7.

“I was quite a bit nervous,” said Ashland manager Mike Michalowicz. “But they’re a resilient team. I knew they would have their big inning, which they did.”

Ashland’s big inning, the seventh, opened with Cannon Peebles rapping a triple to right field. Cole Mallory. Two singles, a walk, and seven errors later, Ashland yielded their bats to their opponents with an 11-run lead.

• ASHLAND – The Randolph-Macon women’s volleyball program will hold an all-skills development camp for middle school students from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, July 10, through Sunday, July 12, with additional evening sessions for overnight campers.

The camp is designed for middle school students to improve the fundamental skills of volleyball: serving, passing, setting, attacking, blocking and defense.

Campers will be assessed on the opening day and placed into groups of similar ability. Several competitions will be held during the afternoon sessions.

This is a camp for all levels. Beginners will gain knowledge about all basic skills while advanced players will improve consistency and techniques.

Relays give Gators edge over Sharks in GRAL meet

By Danny Polk for The Hanover Local ASHLAND – It was a busy night at the scorers’ table: Four hours and all 55 events were needed to determine a winner in Wednesday’s Greater Richmond Aquatic League swimming duel between Hanover Country Club and visiting Atlee Recreation Association.

Atlee’s Gators escaped with a 19-point victory, 1,150-1,131, in large part due to their strong relay performances.

In events 52 through 55, all relays, Atlee outscored Hanover 116-104. Depth helped. The Gators raced five more relay teams in those events.

“There were a lot of really close races between both teams and it really came down to the

last few relays,” said Atlee’s firstyear Head Coach Matt Elliot.

“Both teams were battling back and forth. The relays score double points, so those were key. It came down to the end and we were able to pull it out.”

The meet featured 14 quad winners – eight from Atlee and six from Hanover. Atlee’s quad winners were Colleen Blakeney, Eryn Comer, Corinne Daley, Grace Daley, Luke Daley, Sophie Lacatell, Abby McEntire, and Riley Wade. The Gators’ triple winners were Emily Beaudin, Mackenzie Brittle, Camden Byrd, Taylor Grubb, Avery Jenkins, Nathan Kennan, Jake Kilpatrick, Nick Ligday, Jacob Mandelbaum and Meghan Powers.

The Sharks quad winners were Jacob Cox, K.K.

“The key words for us tonight were ‘just race,’ ” said Elliot, who swims for the College of Charleston. “I told the kids before the meet, ‘Don’t worry about your times. Don’t worry about who you are swimming against, just race the person next to you.’ That really stood out tonight. The Gators really raced whoever was next to them and were able to come out on top.”

Richmond Little League eliminated Ashland 5-1 in the loser’s bracket of the double-elimination tournament Wednesday night. Ashland first lost to Mechanicsville American in the first round of the tournament Monday.

Ashland’s team, which fielded just 13 kids, was getting its first taste of the District 5 tournament.

“This was the first year of this age group coming out to district,” said Ashland manager Paul Pasowicz. “So it was kind of a taste of reality. They got shocked a little bit.”

But Pasowicz said the experience should be an inspiration.

“It’s a good thing, though,” Pasowicz said. “It pushes them.

That’s what I told them. What’s going to get them over the hump is practicing at home.”

“We’re trying to swim personal bests,” Elliot said. “It’s not really about placing. To place is great, but we are really focusing on times and how well the kids do, and having a good experience with it.”

School district again expects full accreditation For the ninth consecutive year, Hanover County Public Schools will again receive 100 percent full accreditation.

According to Dale S. Theakston, communications specialist, the accreditation is determined based on the 200910 Standards of Learning assessments. Preliminary information from the Virginia Department of Education indicates the accreditation status.

Final accreditation reports are expected on Sept. 15.

Local teen taking talents to Texas Abram Dean’s “first real thing” in terms of performing paid off earlier this year when he captured the title of Hanover Junior Idol.

Thanks to some encouragement from his mom Debbie Lunsford, he took the leap into the world of music. And now the 16-year-old from Mechanicsville is preparing to move to Texas to pursue his dream.

On Aug. 20, Abram and his mother will head to Dallas where he has been accepted to study — and hone his skills — with the Linda Septien Entertainment Group.
