Veterans saluted at annual Wayside Memorial ceremony By Jim Ridolphi Ashland-Hanover Local

A

gathering at the Hanover Veterans Memorial in recognition of Veterans Day was made more poignant than usual as those who served or supported them met for the first time after a two-year delay caused by COVID-

19. The pandemic canceled the previous ceremonies but didn’t erase Hanover’s dedication to the men and women who selflessly served their country in one of the armed services. This year’s ceremony was also a solemn reminder of just how close to home those sacrifices are as attendees stood to recognize Kenneth Eugene

Clodfelter. The Lee-Davis High School graduate served in the U.S. Navy and was the father of a small son when he deployed on the U.S.S. Cole. Clodfelter was one of 17 service men and women who died when terrorists attacked the ship in 2000. see VETERANS, pg. 2

School board rejects revised policy regarding transgender students State mandated guidelines not in effect in Hanover By Jim Ridolphi Ashland-Hanover Local By a 4-3 vote, the Hanover School Board rejected a proposal to amend the current policy regarding the treatment of transgender students that would have placed the district in compliance with Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) guidelines. School districts were required to have these measures in place by the start of school in September, but Hanover took its first formal vote on the issue last week. Ashland Town Council approves legislative agenda By Jim Ridolphi Ashland-Hanover Local “What we call a legislative agenda is essentially our pitch to the General Assembly of things we would like to do for us or not do to us as is often the case as well in the upcoming General Assembly session,” Town Manger Josh Farrar

told Council members at a meeting earlier this month. He made the comment prior to presenting the panel with a list of items compiled that represent the Town’s 2022 Legislative Agenda, an annual wish list addressing state controlled issues that affect the Ashland community. Farrar presented the list with a brief descrip-

tion of each item and the potential impacts as Council members prepared to endorse the agenda for the upcoming year. Once approved, Farrar and other Town officials plan to meet with the Town’s General Assembly legislative team to promote those ideas. “Were you to approve this tonight or at future meeting, we would begin meeting with Virginia

Municipal League (VML0 team and some of you to reach out to our legislators to try to get in to their ear with the ones here that are most important to us, but also to share with them our entire perspective, as well,” Farrar said. “It gives us an opportunity speak and leaves them with a little see AGENDA, pg. 5
