STOP the pornifi

Whether we like it or not porn is everywhere.

It features on primetime advertising, television programmes and the billboards our kids are exposed to on a daily basis. It’s been around since Socrates uttered his words of wisdom and features in some of the world’s most celebrated artworks. But the internet has raised the stakes.

Pornography has been scientifically proven to be more addictive than heroin, it rewires young brains to accept violence and subjugation as the norm – and is creating a new generation of potential psychopaths. It’s a bleak and terrifying reality for 21st Century parents.

Guardian reporter Michelle Nelson speaks to those who work with pornaddicted children and those parents grappling with an age-old phenomenon in an age where porn is at hand 24/7.

Sex addiction is often treated as a joke. But it’s a very real problem for a growing number of people and unless taken seriously, could become an epidemic in our society, according to experts who deal with the fall-out.

Sexual Addiction Specialists Aotearoa spokesperson Lisa Taylor, who runs a service working with clinicians, counsellors and families suffering the consequences, knows this only too well.

And while porn addiction has in the past been viewed as a predominately male problem, the international consensus is that, within five years, there will be an equal number of girls impacted by this disease.

As Taylor points out, intimacy is not about sex, it is about human relationships on every level.

People addicted to porn are unable to form solid relationships, unable to understand the concept of intimacy.

The internet has changed the game. Once porn consumption was confined to men’s mags and blue movies, both of which required someone to front up to purchase, putting them out of reach of most kids.

These days hardcore sex – bondage, violence, bestiality, even snuff movies, are all readily available on social media channels.

It doesn’t take a lot of digging to expose very dark content on the numerous platforms – uploaded by adults, but accessible by today’s internet-savvy kids.

“By kids, here I’m talking about kids – internationally, we know 75 per cent of under-10 year olds have been exposed to porn,” Taylor said.

New Zealand has one, if not the highest porn-watching rates, in the world, according to the world’s leading paying provider, Porn Hub! If our adults are watching it at this rate, we can assume our kids are impacted by their behaviour and acceptance.

Taylor is concerned the current generation, meaning those 10 and under, will have seen such material before they have even kissed a girl or a boy.

In the US, 10 and 12-year-olds are confessing to addictions on helplines and, according to a recent study out of the UK carried out for the National Service for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, 10 per cent of 12 to 13-year-olds fear they may be addicted to pornography.

“We know that porn use in general is higher here than the rest of the western world. According to our research we can assume we are looking at similar or worse here in NZ.” US neurologist Doctor William Struthers is of the opinion that in the next five years the problem will be impacting on girls as much as boys.

“Porn is equally as available to young girls as it is to the guys, whereas in older generations it was vastly skewed, about 75 per cent men to 25 per cent women who were watching this stuff,” Taylor says.

“Girls’ brains are being rewired to behave more like male brains.” continued over page

From P5 According to Struthers, a female brain behaves in a way that has greater enmeshment*, whereas men’s brains are better able to be compartmentalised.

“What we are seeing is that where there’s a lot of exposure to pornography, the female brain has no longer has that capability, which is a particular strength of the female brain, and it starts to behave in a more compartmentalised way,” Taylor says.

“Men have compartmentalised strengths, but it starts to become so extreme it becomes maladaptive new wiring.

“In this state of ultra-compartmentalised strengths it starts to become so extreme it becomes a maladaptive new wiring. People can do something they are ashamed of and forget about it, and really forget about it – they can lie about it without even know they are lying sometimes.”

Today’s parents are up against this. In pre-internet days, porn addiction could take years to escalate because it was far harder to access explicit material.

“Nowadays, kids are easily able to access material that would have once been deemed illegal.

“At the age of 10, 11 or 12 it doesn’t take a long time to escalate, it can happen in a few minutes,” Taylor says.

Brain scientists believe pornography is more addictive than heroin, which is currently the most addictive class A drug known; because of the brain interactivity it rewires your brain very quickly.

Experts term this “frantic learning”, Taylor says.

“It’s not like just putting a drug in your system and walking away – your learning centres are actively involved, as you make those choices and click on those links. That further involvement with those addictive substances makes it so much more addictive.

“In terms of the neuroscience, kids have a

lot of mirror neurons, which means ‘what I see is how I learn’ – kids learn a lot by what they see – and by watching porn their bodies are learning to become aroused by violence and aggression.

“They are becoming rewired, that’s on an individual level – on a social level, some experts believe the porn industry is turning our young men into psychopaths, they are becoming aroused by human suffering and violence and it’s developing psychopathology in them.

“A lot of the video-format material available to today’s young people would have been illegal in years gone by, and some are still illegal, but even the level of harm done to the female actors is shocking, and the young viewer’s brain is being wired to find that arousing.”

Erectile dysfunction rates in young people has skyrocketed. It used to be an old man’s problem, but now young men’s sexual arousal template is so pornified, that is programmed by porn, that they can’t have sex with an actual human being; they have complete sexual dysfunction.

Taylor says young people using porn can become isolated from others.

“Young people often use porn because it’s easier than having relationships.

“A 2016 study found young people are more likely to seek out porn because of curiosity, fun, boredom and because it’s less risky than actual sex.”

Communication skills are also likely to suffer as a result as porn users retreat into online worlds. “Sex addiction is often called an intimacy disorder – intimacy doesn’t just mean sexuality, it refers to the ability to connect with everybody. Social media puts technology in the way of our connection.

“There is such a thing as internet addiction, computer addiction so we could be looking at double addictions.

“Any counsellor working in the field of

addiction will always be looking for multiple addictions – sometimes it’s the more benign ones, for example a lot of sex addicts are also workaholics – again that’s the intimacy avoidance, they are also food addicts and entertainment addicts, but it’s not uncommon to find drug use and alcoholism alongside.”

Five years ago the majority of pornographic encounters were “accidental” – because the safeguards were not in place in the home, but anecdotal evidence suggests more and more kids are exposed to porn through peers.

“More and more we are hearing kids say ‘someone said check this out’ or someone sent me a link or someone sent me a text.”

So what can be done to stop the pornification of our kids?

According to Taylor it needs to be tackled on a number of levels.

“Kids who are struggling need counselling.

I would like to see more support groups for young people.

“It is interesting that kids themselves have taken the initiative to get help. There’s a lot of online “no-FAP’ (sexual health) support groups started by young people, such as Reboot Nation, which is specifically for teens and young adults, and Fight the New Drug and Fortify.

“Young people are saying we’ve got this and we will support others to leave this lifestyle and addiction behind.”

Politicians need to step up to the plate and act. Prime Minister Bill English recently downplayed the problem, saying school staff and families are the appropriate people to deal with the issue.

“Well look, it’s not an easy problem for people to speak about or to see,” he said.

“We don’t see evidence of it being a fast-growing or overwhelming problem.”

Although he conceded there’s been “a big increase in access to pornography through

the internet”.

Taylor says this is not good enough.

“Kids need adults to do something on a societal level, in terms of legislation.

“Government legislation is imperative – especially when so many young people are stumbling upon porn sites accidentally.

“If we had filtering at the ISP (internet service provider) level it would take much of that risk out of the system.”

In the UK, such legislation has been in the spotlight pending the recent introduction of the Digital Economy Bill.

The bill, rubber stamped by the Queen last month, recognises how toxic online pornography is and will enforce meaningful age verification for all porn sites — an enormous first step in keeping porn away from children and teens.

Safety, explains what the new legislation means: “Age verification is now a requirement for all significant commercial publishers of pornography, wherever in the world they are based and whether or not they style themselves as being ‘free’.

“If they are about making money and they want to have access to the UK market they must have age verification. If they don’t they can be fined and ultimately ISPs will be required to block access to them in roughly the same way that they block access to child abuse images.”

Taylor says a lot of internet service providers got on-board before the legislation came in a couple of weeks ago.

“Technology has improved in recent years, but it will never be perfect – the best we can do is at the ISP level.

“Sadly, all we are talking about is getting

rid of the hardcore content. The UK Government’s Children’s Commission 2013 report, titled Porn is Everywhere, because of course porn is everywhere – we have to ask do we really need our five-year-olds seeing soft porn on billboards?

“We are just dealing with the worst of the worst right now and trying to get the willpower behind it. We don’t know exactly where the line is right now, but certainly we don’t need our kids being exposed to rape and sexual abuse and degradation and humiliation and the stuff they are seeing on (the internet).”

What can parents do?

Parents and caregivers also have a role to play, by supporting organisations which are trying to effect political change.

“They can do their research. One of my favourite sites is called Protect Young Eyes. com which offers a lot of technological advice about making devices safe. It’s all very open – it looks at whether apps such as Instagram, Snapchat and others are okay for kids depending on the age of the child,” Taylor says “Who wants to be a technology expert in order to keep your kids safe – sites like this provide step-by-step instruction on how to disable image sharing on Snapchat and a lot of other tips.

“Set an alarm once a month and go through a check what your kids have on their devices.”

Be brave and disable the internet on younger kids’ cellphones.

Schools have tended to avoid the issue.

Taylor makes books available to clinicians to assist parents, aimed at children from 5-8 years that begin to open up the conversation, and another for kids aged 8-10 to take the conversation further about pornography.

She has also written a book for kids aged 10-14, which talks about the risks in sexting. continued over page

“It’s taking a while for the wider society to take this thing seriously, but when you are dealing with people whose lives have been ripped apart there’s nothing remotely funny about it.

“People are uncomfortable and that’s

where the jokes come in – but we are not talking about healthy sexuality that should be a pleasure and a joy – we are talking about something extremely painful and destructive.” * Enmeshed is Dr William Struther’s (neuropsychologist and author of Wired for Intimacy) own term for the strength female brains exhibit due to their neuronal wiring – with more connections between the two halves than the male brain has. Struthers calls the strength gained from this greater

connectivity enmeshment and the deficit in men he calls compartmentalisation.

Needless to say the male brain has its own strengths, despite this lack of connectivity between the two halves.

PORN ADDICTION IS NOT ABOUT MORALS – COUNSELLOR Sex Therapy New Zealand counsellor Bridget Wilson works with adult sex addicts.

She says treating porn addiction, which is sex addiction, as a moral problem is both unhelpful and destructive.

“Prejudice really doesn’t help an already tricky situation. Sex addiction is a disease not a disgrace. Addiction-as-disease is not recognised in New Zealand in the main. I was trained in the US where it’s been enshrined in the medical field for a very long time. The Ministry of Health in New Zealand is way behind the rest of the world in its head-in-the-sand approach.”

Wilson says viewing so-called soft porn will inevitably lead to harder content.

“Where there’s addiction involved, the reward pathways in the brain are designed to want more,” she says.

“Addiction is the disease of more. When soft porn doesn’t give a person the ‘buzz’ that it did in the beginning, of course the person is going to search for that buzz.

It’s the same with alcoholics – when beer doesn’t cut it anymore, the alcoholic is naturally going to move to drinks with a higher alcohol content. It’s just the way the addict brain is programmed – hardwired to want more and stronger.

Wilson is increasingly dealing with young men who are impotent due to porn consumption.

She says these men have unrealistic ideas of what the bodies of “real women”

look like.

“They need to learn that the real thing comes with hair, for example. Their fantasy really doesn’t match the reality.”

Porn addiction is not as outwardly visible as many other addictions and often slips under the radar, however, sooner or later the cracks will begin to show.

“There’s a lot of untreated porn addiction that is leading to all kinds of health problems – both psychological and physiological – that I believe will have more and more of an impact as time goes by,” Wilson says.

“I reckon we’re heading for a tsunami of damaged people if we don’t educate our young people more. We need to get over our puritanical biases and start talking reality. The internet has a lot to answer for and the main user of the internet is the porn industry.

“I’m concerned at the long-term implications because we’re a good 20 years behind the US where they’ve been treating this thing for 25 years. Kids in their 20s are presenting for residential treatment with brains that are like mush. They have no idea how to function on several levels after viewing hardcore porn for half their lives.

The porn-affected brain is used to being flooded with feel-good neuro chemicals.

At the point of orgasm the brain’s reward pathways receive huge amounts of these

chemicals that make us feel good. The primal reason for this is so that we would procreate – but we’ve got too many people now, so the primal reason has been lost.

In treating addiction, the idea is to stop the behaviour for a time (withdrawal) so the brain can normalise itself.

“This is very difficult to do because the addict brain will try to trick the sex addict into acting out again and again,” Wilson says.

“The lie that the addict brain tells the addict sounds something like: ‘If you don’t masturbate something terrible is going to happen.’

“I believe we are all sexual beings so it’s natural to have sex. It’s just not natural to constantly flood the brain with neuro chemicals in the huge amounts that hardcore porn will produce. And while our brains have evolved significantly, the addict brain still operates like it did hundreds of thousands of years ago – like primal beings that we are, essentially.”

The younger kids are exposed to porn the greater the damage.

“It’s so normalised right across society now and there’s nothing like peer pressure. But those peers must get the idea from somewhere and it’s got to be their parents or older siblings. Kids are inquisitive and finding a parent’s stash of porn isn’t rocket science.”

Servicing your immuni this winter

As winter knocks on our doors waiting to enter with its wintery blasts of chilled air, it is a reminder to us that the bug season in not far around the corner, and for some the bugs may have already arrived on the doorstep.

Putting a prevention and treatment plan together may help you prepare for the winter months to come.

So here are a few suggestions to help you possibly prevent flu bugs and improve your chances of a quick recovery if you do get sick this winter.

Prevention As they say, prevention is better than cure, so try to aid your body in protecting itself against getting the dreaded lurgy this winter by putting into action a few preventative measures.

Your body will only feel the better for it anyway if no winter bugs are contracted. At the same time you will be helping to improve the status of your immune system and general health.

Five steps: – Eat a rainbow of coloured vegetables at meals every day or as often as you possibly can.

They collectively provide a good variety of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that help to build, repair and maintain a healthy immune system. The more colours consumed, the better.

– Increase garlic consumption as it can help to improve gut health and therefore aid the immune system as well. It is a known antiviral so it has the ability to help all viral conditions, as well as being an antibacterial and antimicrobial.

– Invest in some echinacea. A good-quality tablet taken daily can help to improve your immune health and, if the flu does strike you, it can either help to shorten the duration, lessen the severity, or you may find you miss it altogether and an im-

provement occurs to your immune health.

– Consume more vitamin C-rich foods.

– Increase the zinc rich foods in your daily diet. Zinc is known as the king of immunity, sometimes our stores get depleted via stress and not getting enough every day through our general dietary habits, therefore eating foods with higher levels of zinc like oysters, shellfish or fish aids immunity.

– When you are feeling absolutely terrible and laid up with the flu with no appetite, perhaps try one to two freshly-squeezed oranges, just drinking the juice for a fast and effective vitamin C component as a treatment.

– Stop all activity while sick.

Sometimes when we have just started an exercise regime and then fallen sick with a cold or flu it may be hard to step back from exercising. But when you find you have become sick and run down, it is important to rest completely until well again.

– Get more sleep. Sometimes life is too busy and there is so much to get done in a day that sleep seems to be the last thing to take priority. But when you’ve fallen prey to those nasty bugs doing the rounds, it should be the first thing to increase and get more of, as sleep aids our immunity.

Panko crumb oysters Oyster season is here and the oysters are in the supermarkets ready to be eaten.

Bluff oysters were used in this recipe and are packed with the mineral zinc, so they are a great way to increase your depleted zinc levels.

Oysters can be eaten raw, straight from the container, or seasoned with salt and white pepper and a little lemon juice squeezed on top, or coated in panko crumbs for a cooked version that may be more preferable.

1/2 dozen oysters 1/4 C rice flour (or standard flour) 1 whole egg (beaten) 1C panko crumbs (can use white or wholemeal breadcrumbs)

Sea salt or Himalayan rock salt (or table salt if have none of the others) Ground white pepper 1t sesame oil 6T rice bran oil Dipping sauce: 1T sweet chilli sauce 1/2 t soy sauce 1/4 t fish sauce 1/2 t fresh lemon juice (or 1/2 t lime juice, optional)

– Put oysters on a plate that has doubled-up paper towels on it. Let the oysters rest on there for a few minutes.

– Season lightly with a sprinkle of sea salt and a light shake of white pepper on each, both sides.

– Set up rice flour, egg and panko crumbs on separate plates and a spare clean plate to place the crumbed oysters on. Place each oyster through the rice flour, egg and crumbs and then set aside.

– Heat oil in a heavy pan, and when starting to sizzle, place the oysters in the oil and when golden brown on one side turn over and give that side the same treatment. You may need to turn over several times with tongs or spatula. When they are nicely golden brown on both sides, place on a clean plate with a paper towel to drain the oysters for a few minutes.

– Set on a plate with a wedge of lemon and dipping sauce.

Mother’s Day Makeover

If Kate McIntyre had her way, she would have divided up her Mother’s Day prize pack and gifted it to as many Mid Canterbury mums as she could.

This is exactly the kind hearted, generous nature that ultimately saw her win the Guardian’s competition, nominated by her daughter, Stacey Stoddart.

To celebrate Mother’s Day and the endless hard work, love, support and dedication by local mums, we wanted to spoil someone extra special with a $1500 prize pack and makeover.

After carefully considering a multitude of entries, we were blown away with Stacey’s message, saying she nominated her mum because she does so much for others, even when times have been tough.

Humbled and overwhelmed by her selection, on the day of her fabulous makeover and “girls’ day out” Kate and Stacey could barely contain their excitement.

“It’s been an absolutely amazing experience (taking part in) things I just don’t spend time doing,” she said.

“It was great to spend time with Stacey and (grandson) Fletcher enjoyed the girl’s day out.”

During the experience, Kate was treated to a classy new hairstyle, pampered with terrific make-up and manicure and styled into some stunning clothing and shoes in autumn hues. She was also presented with some beautiful flowers, gifts and enjoyed a delicious lunch, which was all wrapped up with a gorgeous photoshoot at the end of the day.

A quick call was required as a pre-warning.

“She rang me and I didn’t even know there was a competition,” exclaimed Kate.

“She said you might be getting a call…I can’t believe it.

“Things like this just don’t happen and it’s not something I ever get the chance to do.”

Kate is also mum to Joshua, 24, who is engaged to Casey and has a 6-year-old son, Noah, both of whom have been lovingly absorbed into the family.

A special mention also went to her husband, “because without him, I wouldn’t be a mum”.

Sharing the experience, turned out to be the highlight of her day.

Stacey didn’t tell a soul when she nominated her mum in this year’s competition.

“She just does so much for other people, she’s always there when I need her, she’s only a text away and she does things for strangers,” she said.

The mum of two young boys of her own – Henderson, who is 2 in May, and Fletcher Stoddart, 3 months – she says her mother is a godsend who babysits every Friday so she can take a break, comes over to do washing and even takes it home sometimes.

“I don’t enter many competitions, because there are lots of people who are very deserving, but something said to me; ‘you have to apply for it; she deserves it’,” she said.

her own mum and dad, Helen and Andrew, who she said; “are the most incredible, kind, caring, supportive, loving people I know and I wouldn’t be the person I am without them”.

When the children were small, Kate started her own window cleaning company so she had the freedom to go to important things at school.

“One of us was at home and I would work the days he was home,” she said.

“You can’t have a relationship with people unless you spend time with them.”

Now working in reception at Hotel Ashburton, Kate’s greatest passions in life are

her family, friends, gardening and working with her two ex-race horses.

Therefore, she says she doesn’t find a lot of time to peruse the beauty aisles and would much rather spend her money on other options.

“One of the things I avoid the most are my hair and make-up,” she said.

“Even when Stacey got married, she was very organised and we didn’t have time to spend together.”

The extra special day also offered mother and daughter quality moments away from the busyness of family life.

It’s my pleasure to nominate my mum, Kate McIntyre for the Mother’s Day competition. My mum is so deserving of this and a pamper day would really pick up her spirits. The main reason for nominating her is that she does so much for others... not just her loved ones but complete strangers. The other day at Countdown, she bought a lady some nappies that she had put back because she couldn’t afford them. She is always helping me out with my two boys, a nearly two-yearold and a ten-week-old. She has my oldest every Friday as she loves spending time with him and it also gives me a break. When he’s at preschool, she’ll watch my baby so I can run into town and do jobs. She even takes my washing home with her! I’ve recently struggled with PND and her support is what has gotten me through.

Recently, she has also been having a rough time with my grandad being very unwell. It is emotionally hard but Mum, putting others before herself, has been helping Gran out by doing jobs around the house like lighting the fire, cleaning their windows and doing all the ringing around to arrange care.

I can’t think of a more deserving person. She is an amazing person and the best mum I could ever ask for.

“Everyone has been so lovely and there’s so many super people who donated (products/services),” she said.

Anybody fancy some mince on toast?

FARMY PRINCESS with DONNA-MARIE LEVER

One thing I’ve become extremely accomplished with on the farm is getting off it.

Let’s be clear, holidays in our life are very rare.

With Master Two and Miss Four in the mix, we haven’t had a sunshine holiday for at least five years, and anyone with a farmer husband would know getting them away from the lure of the muddy paddocks and gumboot attire is a tough task.

But we did it, leaving the green pastures and grazing beasts in the capable care of our foreign farmhand. Better still we were completely out of cellphone range to maximise the R&R. What happened next can only be described as an unfortunate aligning of the solar system.

Just before we left for the sandy shores of a hot island, the Farmer had enquired about a home-kill with a local butcher.

(Disclaimer: I didn’t know about this).

He wasn’t there, so the Farmer just left his name and number to call him when he got back.

Meantime, at the rural wonderland, a truck was due to arrive to take some stock to another farm – cows I think – the really big ones, possibly bulls, and just a couple of them.

At exactly the same time the butcher had rung back, hearing the Farmer’s answerphone message to redirect any inquiries to the farmhand.

So he rang, and we will possibly never know how the conversation went but there was potentially a MASSIVE language misunderstanding and within a few hours the butcher was at the farm with his rifle.

The farmhand helpfully showed him the two bulls due to be “collected” and he shot them dead! Naturally, then the truck turned up to collect them. Bugger.

There are few words I can use to describe the next part, because when the Farmer learned of all this, adjectives of the non-publishable kind, were flying thick and fast.

The stars definitely hadn’t lined up on

this one. And none of this was helped by my nervous laugh I have acquired in stressful situations. So I just giggled, while Miss Four asked (on repeat) if the cows could come alive again.

Can I just point out the rest of the dayto-day running of the farm for one entire week went without incident. Silver lining, right? Well, just goes to show even the Farmer is still learning and as for my next

sunny holiday … I suspect it will be somewhere in the vicinity of a decade away.

Good news for our guests though, we have mince on toast on tap for the foreseeable future.

The Ashburton District might have an ageing population but it is well placed to cater for the wide range of needs of the growing number of seniors.

Across the district there are eight facilities that provide lifestyle options ranging from independent living in a gated community through to total, secure care for elderly with dementia. Retirement village developers have been determined to keep pace and in some cases, ahead of future demand.

The old image of a rest home as a place where the elderly went to spend their final years in an institutional environment have long gone. Today, the word “resthome” is no longer accurate when it comes to describing the facilities available in Ashburton.

Today the places where older people spend their final years are often like a min-

iature version of their own homes. Some choose to live in assisted living apartments, others in full care facilities, but the emphasis is always on ensuring there is quality in those years. Our district has now entered the world of retirement villages with Radius Millstream, Rosebank, Terrace View, Coldstream House and Cameron Courts all offering independent living villas.

Dental implants and over dentures What is an implant?

A dental implant serves to replace a missing tooth or retain a denture. It is only a few millimetres long, the shape and surface is carefully engineered so that bone grows to the surface firmly anchoring it in the jaw.

Bambino Picollo is the nursery for tamariki aged three months to around two years. The children in here are cared for by Debbie Currey, Aimee Edgar and Georgia Ryk. Time for myself and blood, sweat ... tears MAD MAMA with DESME DANIELS

This mad mumma bear has spent the best part of nearly 20 years raising her four cubs.

Add into the mix, my love of working and it’s been a hectic, exciting, exhilarating, exhausting journey. There will be plenty of women out there doing the exact same thing, with their heads down, focusing on 101 things, ploughing our way through each day and each week and each school term.

So many people are amazed that A) I have four kids and B) I work fulltime. The normal comment is “how do you do it?”.

Well, honestly if I have all four kids under one roof at the end of the day, then it’s a win for me.

How we got there and what the day brought is an ever-changing adventure, so let’s be grateful we made it through the day. Small steps, it’s just small steps and celebrating the wins.

I’ve tried being a stay-at-home mum, and while I loved it for six months, that was my limit.

For every stay-at-home mum out there, hats off to you. Staying at home can be way more difficult than working fulltime. I have to escape my children to appreciate them more!

Let me take you back 30 or so years. I have a fond memory of my mother forgetting it was parents’ afternoon at school.

I was the only child left at school at 3pm when my mum raced up to the gates. Obviously, I’m not bitter or emotionally scarred (don’t listen to me, I am – it’s not a fond memory, bloody useless woman – but the silver lining is, it’s made me a better mum).

I’ve made the school sports days, picnics and prizegivings – helped immensely by the welcome prompts from awesome teachers who understand the delicate work-life balancing act us “working mothers” have. And, I’ve remembered mufti days. I do feel for those kids rocking up in uniforms on a school mufti day – I’m probably tempting fate now, being so smug!

So now I find myself in a new phase, the

self-centred phase. This is probably not what you may think, but the kids are all of an age where they can self manage, giving me time to think about myself – I know how selfish am I. I’ve become very focused on a fitter mind and a fitter body (turning 21 again, plus GST, plus post and packaging can do that to a woman).

A group of us five women met, three times a week, in our boardroom at work with a trainer. This sparked something that has gradually built up over the past 12 months. I am now the best GK the social netball team has ever had (honestly, I am, well, when I learnt to catch the ball again,

after a 25-year hiatus) and by the time most of you read this I’ll be the colour of a tomato completing my first half marathon.

And guess what, I’ve actually learned to run, not just to the bar for last orders, but actually run and I’m enjoying it.

I know for those that know me – it’s a shocker. Anyway, here’s hoping I can not only walk after the half marathon, but I can waddle my way back to Ashburton for work on Monday – wish me luck. And for those who are panicking about the change – the half marathon is through a vineyard with a bottle of wine as a dangling carrot at the finish line.

Choose your winter With the nights getting darker and the mornings colder, leaving and returning for work is done under the cover of darkness.

We can all suffer from mild forms of SAD (seasonal affective disorder) as we want to hibernate, but it's not necessarily the healthy option, no matter how tempting it can be to hole up through the chilly winter months, there's no excuse; opportunities for winter activities.

Keeping active and engaged helps offset the winter blues and provides an opportunity for cabin-crazed kids and pets to run off pent-up energy, improving everyone’s sleep.

A brisk daily walk will help improve fitness and energy levels and has been proven to lower stress and costs nothing.

The Ashburton Domain is worth a visit in

any season and the youngsters will enjoy the great playground equipment and the nearby aviary.

Further afield the Rakaia walkway offers fantastic views of the snowy peaks. You’ll also find a wonderful playground next to the giant salmon, plus a mini golf course across the road and the opportunity for a warm pie at Harvey’s Bakehouse.

For the more adventurous, take a stroll along the windswept winter coastline or pack a picnic and head into the back country for an invigorating walk around one of the Ashburton lakes.

Just half an hour south of Ashburton the delightful village of Geraldine has all the trappings for a great day out. The township is home to many lovely independently-owned shops and boutiques, and take

your walking shoes and a warm jacket to visit Peel Forest. The plants and wildlife of Peel Forest are rich and abundant.

Methven is also well worth a visit. The alpine village comes into its own during winter, even for the more sedentary with no desire to hit the slopes, with its eateries and a great little cinema.

There's nothing like a good book to fritter away those long winter nights; vist or join your local library.

For those looking for more physical activity, Ashburton's EA Networks Centre also offers a range of indoor exercise opportunities.

So there's no excuse to watch the world pass through a window this winter, get out there, get active and enjoy the season.

This month’s recipes are indicative of what we are eating at home at the moment with the emphasis on adding as much goodness where we can with the addition of seeds, nuts and fibre – although the lolly cake has thrown that theory out the window!

My curry casserole is packed with flavour with the addition of added garlic and ginger to help amp up the immunity for this time of the year, it’s a good one to

throw together for a mid-week meal.

The fruit crumble has been adapted to provide a dessert that is satisfying yet healthy too. Leftovers are great for breakfast the next day – in fact we have been known to make it for a weekend brunch as it is so packed with goodness!

Autumn slaw & chicken I love this as it is quick to prepare and full of goodness and is perfect to change dependent on the contents of your fridge.

I now just buy a packet of the ranch slaw (at the supermarket chilled salad department), which enables me to quickly make up a salad or even add a handful to a soup for added flavour and texture without the waste of

Use the same concept with roasted vegetables for a vegetarian option and change the meat to whatever you have on hand.

The autumn slaw recipe is for approximately two to four serves.

Then you just add the quantity of meat and pita/souvlaki bread according to numbers. chilli flakes (optional) – In a large bowl add all the ranch slaw ingredients together and mix lightly, season with salt and pepper to taste.

– Toss the chicken fillets in a little olive oil with salt and pepper and chilli flakes to taste. Heat a nonstick pan and cook chicken until browned and cooked thoroughly on both sides.

– In another hot pan add a dash of olive oil and heat both sides of the pita bread until golden and warmed.

– To serve, slather a layer of mayonnaise on the warmed bread, top with the ranchslaw, adding the chicken fillets on top of this. Finish off with dollops of relish, salt and pepper.

Nostalgic lolly cake

This is definitely an oldie but a goodie and, if I remember rightly, one of the recipes that we first learned at Ashburton Intermediate School. It is ridiculously easy to make and everyone seems to love it – young and old.

You can keep to the recipe as I have, or you can experiment by changing the flavours of the lollies that you use – some people use pineapple lumps or even chopped licorice allsorts.

With the Eskimo lollies I find they are easier to chop than the original fruit puffs but still maintain the same taste. This recipe makes a big batch only because I hate having a half can of condensed milk sitting in the fridge, so just halve the recipe if you prefer.

The budget brands of malt biscuits don’t have the right texture or taste, so use a quality brand. I like a chunkier textured slice, so I use a rolling pin to bash the biscuits in a sealed bag.

240g butter 1 can sweetened condensed milk 2 190g packets of Eskimo lollies 2 250g Griffins/Arnott’s malt biscuits, roughly crushed Desiccated coconut for dusting, approximately 1/4 C

– Prepare a baking dish by lining with baking paper and scattering the bottom of the tin lightly with coconut.

– Melt butter and condensed milk in the

microwave. Break up the Eskimo lollies into bite-sized pieces.

– Mix the butter, condensed milk, crushed malt biscuits and lollies together until well mixed.

– Pour into the dish pushing down until firmly packed and scatter lightly with coconut.

– Set in the fridge for a couple of hours and then cut into desired size. This keeps up to a week easily in a sealed container, given the opportunity.

Mid-week chicken curry bake

Chicken thigh or breast is the meat of choice when you need to whip up a quick meal that is cheap, moist, tender and adaptable to differing flavours.

By using the cut with the bone in, it adds extra flavour to soups and stews (and keeping meat on the bone makes for some serious texture for the lucky forager).

Even though I use a curry paste with this recipe, I power boost this by adding extra garlic and ginger and I use whatever vegetables I have on hand, bearing in mind that if they are a hard vegetable like a carrot I dice/slice smaller so that it cooks quicker.

Orange kumara is perfect in a casserole as is melds down into the stew imparting all its goodness, blending the vegetables and meat perfectly as it bakes. By adding the silverbeet in the last five minutes of cooking keeps the bright intense colour.

Serves 4-6 people 2t sesame oil or vegetable oil 1 medium onion, sliced 4–6 cloves garlic, chopped 3cm piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped 800g–1kg chicken thigh, skin off, bone in – meat taken off bone with bone kept and put into casserole 4–6T Thai green curry paste 1 can 440ml coconut cream 2 medium orange kumara, washed and roughly chopped 3-4 stalks silverbeet, green part finely sliced, white stalks removed or a good handful of spinach leaves 2 courgettes, diced To serve Roasted peanuts Handful of fresh herbs (mint, parsley, coriander), roughly chopped Jasmine rice

– Preheat oven to 180°C. In a large pan that can fit into your oven, heat the pan on top elements, add oil and quickly brown the chicken.

Then add your onion, garlic and ginger, toss for a few minutes then add curry paste.

– Cook for a further couple of minutes before adding the can of coconut cream, then mix in your diced vege-

tables and bring to boil. Put in oven and bake for 30-40 minutes.

– While this is cooking, cook your rice. I find 1 1/2 C jasmine rice to 3C boiling water, 1/2 t salt and cooked in a microwave for 13 minutes feeds 3-4 people well.

– Let sit for a couple of minutes then fluff with a fork.

– Five minutes before taking the chicken dish out of the oven, throw in your silverbeet, or even just add, stir and pop a lid on as you take it out – by the time you are ready to serve it will be fine.

– To serve top the chicken with chopped herbs and peanuts and a bowl of jasmine rice.

Blueberry bran muffin

These little muffins are real winners! They not only taste great, but are also a healthy way to enjoy a muffin, although it is hard to resist slathering a good amount of butter on them when they come straight from the oven.

They are perfect with a good cup of tea on a cold rainy day in front of the fire! This recipe makes approximately nine muffins.

1 1/2 C wheat bran 1C boiling water 2/3 C brown sugar – or coconut sugar if you’d prefer 1/2 C vegetable oil 1 large egg 1C flour 1T baking powder Zest of 1 lemon

1/2 t salt 1C frozen blueberries

– Preheat oven to 175°C. If using a muffin tin line with paper cups and spray with cooking oil. In a large pan pour boiling water over bran and let rest until well absorbed, then add brown sugar, oil and beaten egg, mix well then add sifted flour, salt and baking powder.

– Finally, add the bran, lemon zest and blueberries, gently folding into the mixture until just combined.

– Divide the batter into your well-greased tin and bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until the tops feel springy when touched. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Wholegrain fruit crumble

This is ideal with any fruit and, as I said in the introduction, it is not only great as a dessert, it’s perfect to have as a hot alternative to porridge at the start of the day. Now if you don’t have all of the seeds, nuts, grains or flours, don’t fret, just use what you have on hand and improvise – I’ve even used coconut oil instead of the butter for a dairy-free alternative.

1/2 C ryemeal flour 3/4 C wholemeal flour 1 1/2 C mixed nuts and seeds (I use sunflower and pumpkin seeds, linseeds, almonds, walnut, sesame) 1C rolled oats 1/2 C brown sugar or coconut sugar 125g melted butter 1/2 t cinnamon powder 1t ginger powder 2C stewed fruit

– Preheat oven to bake 180°C. – In a bowl add all the dried ingredients, finishing off with the melted butter.

– Mix thoroughly, coating dried ingredients with the butter; you want it to colour up, dry but still clumping

together with the butter.

– Put fruit into a baking dish and top with crumble mix, covering the fruit.

– Bake for 20-25 minutes or until it’s

crisp and golden in colour.

– Enjoy with custard, cream, yoghurt or, for the truly virtuous, just by itself.

Make it brunch

Egg, mushroom and fetta croissant dish

Butter 30g sliced mushrooms 12 mini croissants 3C baby spinach 150-200g fetta cheese (to taste), crumbled 8 large eggs 2C whole milk Salt and pepper

– Butter a 22cm-x-33cm casserole dish. Heat butter in a large non-stick skillet over medium heat and cook the mushrooms, stirring occasionally, until lightly golden brown, 6 to 8 minutes.

– While the mushrooms are cooking, partially split the croissants, making sure not to cut all the way through.

Stuff with spinach and all but 1/2 C cheese and transfer to the prepared dish, cut sides facing up. Divide mushrooms among the stuffed croissants.

– In a bowl, beat eggs with milk and 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper, then pour over the croissants. Sprinkle remaining 1/2 C cheese over the top. Cover with foil, then plastic wrap; refrigerate overnight (or at least 15 minutes).

– When ready to serve, heat oven to 190°C, remove casserole from fridge and discard plastic wrap. Bake for 20 minutes, then remove foil and bake until eggs are puffed and just set, 25 to 30 minutes more.

Cinnamon pecan french toast

3 eggs 1C milk 1T sugar 1t vanilla 1/4 t salt 1C pecans, finely chopped 2t ground cinnamon 6 slices toast bread Non-stick cooking spray Maple syrup, for serving Blueberries, for serving Whipped cream, optional

– Preheat oven to 160°C and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

– Roast pecans in oven at 160°C until golden brown. Set aside.

– In a shallow dish, combine the eggs, milk, salt, vanilla, cinnamon and sugar and whisk until well combined.

– Coat a large flat frypan with cooking spray and place over medium-low heat. Dip the bread, one piece at a time, in the egg mixture on both sides.

Allow excess to drip off and cook until golden brown on both sides.

– Serve drizzled with maple syrup and top with freshly-roasted pecans and blueberries. Add a dollop of whipped cream if you want to be decadent.

Tackling rust on roses Joan Lawrence is this month’s winner with the following question: How do I get rid of “rust” on some of my roses?

Unfortunately, outbreaks of rust in roses can only be prevented. There is no complete cure once the rose bushes have been infected. Now is an excellent time to begin a programme of prevention by carefully collecting and removing any rust infected leaves that fall from your plant. When pruning, ensure that all pruning’s are carefully collected and then burnt or removed from the property. Spray your roses with a good quality horticultural oil, and copper oxychloride. This will help ensure your rose bushes are clean at the beginning of the new season in spring.

Plan you fertiliser programme for next season, as vigorous growing sturdy plants can be more resilient to severe attacks of rust - try Daltons Premium Rose and Flower Fertiliser. Check the drainage of your rose garden; the chances of rust infections are markedly increased where there are extremely heavy clay soils that are poor draining.

Finally, some rose varieties are more prone to rust than others. If one of your rose bushes is regularly, heavily infected with rust, it might be a good idea to remove the plant and replace it with a more robust, disease resistant variety.

May tasks in the garden Traditionally May is the beginning of winter, especially in central and southern parts of New Zealand where frosts will now be occurring. However, there are still many tasks to be undertaken in the garden, regardless of the weather!

It’s harvesting time for vegetables that were planted mid-late summer. These include; artichokes (Jerusalem), beetroot, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, leeks, onions, parsnips, potatoes, silverbeet and turnips. Continue planting seedlings of cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach and silverbeet.

Some winter vegetables can be grown from seed and sown directly into the soil.

These include broad beans, onions, peas, radish and spinach. Where no winter vegetables will be grown, sow green manure crops such as lupin and mustard that can be dug into the existing soil in late winter/ early spring.

May is the preferred month for planting garlic; either newly purchased bulbs or old bulbs that can be broken up and separated. The cloves should be planted 4cm deep and 6cm between plants and new growth should appear in around four weeks.

Continue to plant out your winter flowering annuals, preparing the soil well before planting by adding Daltons Compost and raising beds where there is a possibility of poor drainage in winter months.

It will soon be pruning time for decid-

uous fruit trees such as apples, apricots, nectarines, peaches, pears and plums.

With taller growing fruit trees like plums; reduce their height significantly for easier harvesting. Prune to allow adequate air movement and exposure to the sun (this will improve the ripening of fruit).

Feijoas, guavas and kiwifruit can now be harvested. Remember that mature feijoas fall to the ground and should only be harvested once they’ve fallen from the tree.

Allow kiwifruit to ripen on the vines as it enhances their flavour.

Table grapes grow prolifically over summer and will now require severe pruning.

Define the main leaders on your grapevine, then shorten lateral growth that grows from these main leaders.

While some roses will still be flowering in the warmer parts of New Zealand. In central and southern parts of the country growth will have ceased and leaves will be

falling. Apply a winter spray of a copper compound to help prevent typical rose diseases reappearing in spring. Commence rose pruning in June once leaves have fallen and the plant is completely dormant.

As the seasonal wet weather arrives, monitor your lawns for potential wet spots which can have a significant impact on the quality of your lawn. Install additional drainage coil if possible which will help.

Grass growth will start slowing significantly, so raise mower levels to cut higher over the winter months.

New seasons trees and shrubs, especially camellias, azaleas and rhododendrons are arriving at garden centres. Plan your new plantings carefully, this is especially important when planting trees in smaller sections. Prepare the soil well for planting with plenty of compost, and pop a Daltons Premium Planter Tab into the hole when planting trees to give them the best start.

Gardens at this time year provide an enormous amount of material for the compost bin. Continue adding kitchen scraps, lawn clippings, leafy tree pruning’s as well as old fallen leaves to your compost. Turn the compost every four to six weeks - this is very important to ensure the compost does not become too wet over the winter months as this slows or stops the breakdown process.

Casual employment — when is it not casual?

HR ESSENTIALS with Mike Johnson

Casual employment provides flexibility, which can be really useful; but it leaves you with the constant uncertainty of whether the job or the employee will be there tomorrow?

It is usually much easier for both employer and employee to give a casual employee a more regular position – less hassle, more sense of security ... but, and here’s the important point, in due course permanent employment, whether you realise it or not.

So what defines “Casual”? In essence, it is an employment relationship where there is NO promise of work and NO commitment to be available if work is offered.

It is ideal for a situation where work is available from time to time as demand fluctuates, and for people like students or semi-retired folk who are happy if they don’t have any work from time to time.

It also works well where an employee wants to be able to say they cannot work on some occasions – such as for serious sportspersons.

However, being casual means there is no need for dismissal (the offer of work just stops) and there will often be no entitlement to sick or stat day pay. Treating a permanent as casual can therefore be expensive – stopping provision of work would be unjust dismissal; non payment

of a stat day would be an unjust disadvantage; and after 12 months a non-casual employee is entitled to annual leave, even if they have been paid 8 per cent in lieu all the time!

So, when does casual employment become permanent? This happens when the parties’ intentions change. Generally the employer’s intention changes when working hours become regular. Typically, if over a three month period the employee has worked a consistent minimum number of hours per week (even if on different days of the week) they may be considered to have become permanent.

However the arrangement can still be casual if the employee does not want a permanent commitment.

It is important to make sure you all know what is going on: 1. Casual staff should have a specifically casual employment agreement (and it should be signed). They should also be treated as any other employee regarding communications, health and safety etc. This includes having a job description and proper induction.

2. There should be a standard process for allocating work to casual staff, so that they regularly agree to work or not — this can be project by project; week by week or even day by day. As a casual employee, never assume you are scheduled at work.

3. You should monitor casual hours of work — Ideally monthly so you have time to manage any changes; quarterly as a minimum.

4. If a casual employee is working regular hours, either stop it before it becomes entrenched or offer permanent parttime employment (as a new agreement). That way if, as an employee, you want to stay casual you make it clear in writing, and can’t later claim that in reality you were permanent.

Your casual staff can be vital to your business. Look after them and treat them fairly; use them casually and carefully – it often makes your next permanent recruitment much easier.
