A common thread through both columns is people convincing themselves that they don’t have time for things. They’re too busy. But are we too busy? Or are we not prioritising or getting organised?

Coby believes that being a timebanker has helped her in many ways. She does the things she enjoys doing and the ones that she doesn’t like can be done by other timebankers.

Madeleine Graham entered the history books this year, starring in the first-ever dance film made on location in Antarctica.

The Royal New Zealand Ballet dancer battled freezing temperatures and extreme terrain to create Antarctica: The First Dance with Christchurch-raised choreographer, Corey Baker.

Madeleine spoke with YOU magazine’s Megan Gnad about her life-changing experience on the ice.

Travelling to Antarctica was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Melbourne-raised Royal New Zealand Ballet dancer, Madeleine Graham.

ehearsing in sweltering 30°C heat on Christchurch’s outdoor Dance-OMat, was a stark contrast to the challenging conditions awaiting Madeleine Graham on her next assignment.

As the dancer finalised her ground-breaking routine in the balmy February sunshine, she was getting in the zone, imagining great swathes of snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures.

She soon found herself boarding the US Air Force C-17 aircraft, on her way to Earth’s southernmost continent.

Just five hours later, and with an estimated 3920km flying time under her belt, she stepped on to the hallowed, vast landscape of Antarctica, and in an instant, her life was altered forever.

“We got to walk off the plane and straight on to Antarctica, which was the most incredible experience, or moment, of my life,” says the Royal New Zealand Ballet dancer. “It was so special. It was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Award-winning choreographer, Corey Baker, directed her as she scaled mountains, tobogganed down steep slopes, and abseiled a crevasse, while director of photography, Jacob Bryant, captured every glorious second.

But, the result of this thrilling venture, has a serious message. The purpose of the expedition was to create the short film, Antarctica: The First Dance, a visual tool to celebrate the landscape and create dialogue surrounding climate change.

It was a subject that Corey was determined to bring to a wider audience.

network Channel 4, and digital development organisation, The Space, supported by the BBC and Arts Council England, he created a dramatic film that has already amassed more than 377,145 YouTube views and premiered during Earth Day in London on April 22.

The 4.5-minute clip, featuring stunning views and exquisite ballet, is fittingly set to a soundtrack of London Grammar’s song, Wild Eyed.

Corey, who is renowned for creating engaging work, says dance is a universal language that can “act as a bridge between people, igniting action”.

“Antarctica: The First Dance shows upclose the beauty of this incredible place, and by watching the film, people can feel closer to something that may otherwise seem abstract and unconnected,” he says.

“Climate change knows no boundaries, whether it be race, sexuality, creed or class – it will affect all. I suspect the more we all learn about global warming, together we will be able to join the movement and make life choices that help mitigate climate change impact.”

Lasting Impact The 10-day excursion in early February, was not only a culture shock, but a learning curve for 25-year-old Madeleine, who was raised in Melbourne.

Staying at Scott Base, they had the opportunity to meet with scientists and discuss the challenges they face. “Some of this research has been going on for years, and years, and years,” explains Madeleine.

“They were able to show us statistics and hard facts of what’s going on down there.

Making people aware (is important) because there are so many people who just have no idea. It’s not their fault, it’s not widely shared, the hard facts. I guess the awareness is the first part of that, and, in Corey’s sense, it’s bringing it in through dance.”

About 90 people were based at the Kiwi headquarters during Madeleine’s stay, which, at the end of summer, was classed as peak travel time.

She had to adapt quickly to 24/7 daylight, which she says “was a shock to the system”.

“The first few days you’d be writing an email, and you’d look out the window and it would be daylight, and it would be 10.30pm at night. In the bedrooms it was all blacked out and sleeping was fine because we were exhausted from the day.” continued over page

From P5 Those days were jampacked, with the crew camping out on location, and even taking part in survival training so they were prepared in case an emergency occurred.

But, the biggest challenge proved to be managing the -16°C conditions.

“Being a dancer, we’re very in-tune with our bodies, so it was just about keeping me warm at all times, really,” Madeleine says. “We did have a warm space I could go into, so, in between takes, I would quickly put on my jacket, have hot water bottles, and hot tea. We had experienced people around us. That was their one worry for me because I’m quite a small person, so keeping me warm was the main priority.”

Another concern was sunburn, because, “the light just reflects off everything”.

“It was cold, but as soon as I was dancing, that was fine,” she says. “When you’re active you’d take a few layers off, and you’d cool down and you’d put a few layers back on. They taught us how to manage staying warm, taking good care of yourself, and knowing what stage you were at. Like, if your fingers, for example, got really cold, you’d just tell everyone, and keep everyone in the loop.”

Challenging the norm As well as the chance to travel to Antarctica, one of the main reasons Madeleine signed up for the audition, was the opportunity to work with Corey Baker.

Originally from Christchurch, the award-winning choreographer and filmmaker is recognised for his innovation and commitment to driving dance into the 21st century.

He has a strong belief that dance is for everyone and has famously taken performers out of their traditional settings, and created works of art in parks, playgrounds, stadiums, shopping centres, rugby fields, and on television.

Corey trained as a classical dancer in Christchurch and Sydney before moving to Switzerland to dance at Ballet Theatre Basel. In 2008, he relocated to the UK to join BalletBoyz and has continued to dance for many acclaimed companies and choreographers, alongside starting Corey Baker Dance in 2010.

At the end of last year, he auditioned Royal New Zealand Ballet company dancers to take with him to Antarctica, and Madeleine was a quick stand-out.

“It was wonderful working with Corey,” Madeleine says. “He’s so down-to-earth, knows what he wants, gave great direction, and also allowed me to interpret things how I would, so that it suited my body.

person who’s passionate about what they do. It makes it easier for you to do your job and get the best result possible.”

While she says rehearsal and prep time was limited, when they arrived on the ice, the piece took on a life of its own.

“We were able to inspire each other and once we got down to Antarctica, that kind of led all the movement and what he was inspired by. He directed me accordingly to what our locations would allow us to do.

“Corey was completely inspired by Antarctica … so, it was very spontaneous and I had to quickly learn. As dancers, we often are used to practising things over and over so you get a perfect thing, so in a sense it was a bit more rustic, but it had a more natural, human-like feel to it.”

She also has high praise for director of photography, Jacob Bryant, who captured the film.

“It was incredible. I’m just happy people were able to experience what we experi-

enced through the stunning footage Jacob captured on the camera. The drone footage at the beginning is outstanding, he’s so good at what he does, we were so lucky to work with him.”

Star quality Making history dancing on the ice is a remarkable achievement in an already impressive career for the Australian dancer.

Madeleine began dancing at just seven and went on to train at the Victorian College of the Arts, and The Australian Ballet School, from which she graduated in 2012.

That same year she jetted across the Tasman to join the Royal New Zealand Ballet for Giselle and became a permanent member of the company in 2013.

During this time, she has toured to China, US, UK, Italy and Hong Kong.

Last year, she began taking principal roles in the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s classical repertoire, performing the role of Vivette in L’Arlésienne by Roland Petit, and

her portrayal of Juliet in Francesco Ventriglia’s Romeo and Juliet, garnered critical acclaim.

“Antarctica: The First Dance is kind of another big achievement,” she says.

Based in Wellington, Madeleine loves living in New Zealand, saying that, because it’s not too far from home, her family can pop over and watch her perform.

Dancing with Mozart Corey and Madeleine are now teaming up once again to draw on their experience in Antarctica for The Royal New Zealand Ballet’s Dancing with Mozart season, be-

ginning at the end of May. Inspiration from the documentary film acts as the basis for The Last Dance, a new piece designed and choreographed by Corey, featuring Mozart’s unfinished Requiem.

will be seen for the first time in New Zealand.

Royal New Zealand Ballet artistic director Patricia Barker said Dancing with Mozart displays the depth of talent in the Royal New Zealand Ballet with an array of virtuosic roles to showcase the dancers.

“Divertimento 15 and Petite Mort are performed only by world-renowned companies and we are joining an elite group in staging them.”

Madeleine says The Last Dance is a completely new piece, inspired

by Antarctica and climate change, featuring the whole company. The season premieres in Wellington on May 31 and tours to Christchurch, Invercargill, Dunedin, Blenheim, Palmerston North, Napier and Auckland until July 8.

“We’re working on it at the moment,” she says. “Corey has come back to choreograph. I’m looking forward to getting back out there again and sharing what we’ve done with everyone.”

It’s further proof that the experience in Antarctica has left an indelible, lasting impact on both the young dancer and choreographer.

They hope their message can reach as many people as possible to create awareness and real change in a place that is now so close to their hearts.

“It’s one of those things, you never kind of expect to be able to go to Antarctica, and there’s very few ways you can get there,” Madeleine says.

“I was very fortunate to be able to go along doing what I love, what I’ve worked my whole life for, and to bring awareness to climate change, and bring dance to a wider audience.” continued on P9

As a benefactor and patron of the arts, she was made a Companion to the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to arts and the community in 2002.

She spoke with YOU Magazine about the upcoming Royal New Zealand Ballet season, exciting new Christchurch art projects and her love of Geraldine.

What are you most looking forward to about Dancing with Mozart, and what can audiences expect this time around?

I am really looking forward to the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s next season, Dancing with Mozart, because we are going to see four pieces by three different choreographers all danced to the wonderful music of Mozart and played by the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.

A programme featuring George Balanchine and Jiří Kylián, two world-famous and well-established choreographers, together with Corey Baker from Christchurch, will be an exciting and electrifying mix.

I am delighted to see the strength of the arts in the city and the community. I am full of admiration for all the people working in the sector whose gritty determination puts the show on the road, whether it is institutions like the Court Theatre, the orchestra, the art gallery or smaller groups who are still producing great work. Excellent audiences show how much we appreciate all the things being produced. This certainly applied to the RNZB’s last production The Piano: The Ballet which had large, appreciative audiences and was a huge success.

Everyone in Christchurch will be thrilled when the town hall is back in action and decisions are made about the arts precinct. Of course, I would like to see more funding for the arts at a city council level, and recognition of the enormously important role arts organisations collectively play in the life of the city.

Is it important for the ballet to tour smaller centres around the country to reach as many people as possible?

Yes. Last year, the RNZB education team visited more than 100 schools all over the country which was very popular and a great success.

This year they will visit a similar number and will bring Tutus on Tour to areas outside of the main centres. They have already performed Tutus on Tour in Gore and Tauranga, and I loved seeing them in Ashburton last year.

What have been some of the biggest changes during the past few years?

What does your current role with the Royal New Zealand Ballet involve?

I am a trustee, which is a governance role.

I have been on the board for more than five years and have learnt a lot from the experience, especially about the high standards expected of everyone who works at the company and what an immensely physical job being a ballet dancer is.

I personally, as a member of the board, set out to make sure it is possible for the company to achieve its goals organisationally, financially and in all the ways that a professional ballet company needs

Big changes in the lpast few years have been the increase in contemporary work presented, including work by New Zealanders, the development of outreach programmes, which bring ballet to many different communities, including visits to schools, programmes for visually-impaired people and those on the autistic spectrum, and last year, a project in Wellington women’s prison, just to name a few. I think the company has become more recognised internationally for its excellent productions. It is a dynamic company and always moving forwards.

When did you move to Geraldine and what do you enjoy about the local art scene there?

I was born in London where I certainly saw lots of wonderful things as I grew up, including Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, at his peak, dancing together – an unforgettable experience.

I married a boy from Geraldine and we have a house there and have brought our own family up there.

Geraldine has a lively arts community with at least two art galleries, a theatre, a performing arts school, a ukulele festival every winter, which is attended by people from all over the world and New Zealand, as well as lots of visiting musicians, including the New Zealand String Quartet who have played there many times, and an active drama society which regularly puts on excellent productions.

Lots of people from Geraldine went to see Tutus on Tour last year in Timaru and Ashburton, so the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s visit was much appreciated.

As a patron of the arts in Christchurch, are you impressed at development following the earthquakes?

Ngaire’s ‘overwhelm Ngaire’s nomination Hey guys

I saw your mothers day giveaway competition on Facebook and believe that my mum deserves a day to be treated like the Queen she is.

My Mum (Ngaire Coote) has done a lot for me over the years and I’ve never really been able to afford to give her something back to show her how much I appreciate her.

Whether it be funding me through university, helping me move to Wellington (even though I had no source of income), being my emotional anchor or providing the best home cooked food in New Zealand, she is always there to help me out.

Mum had a pretty tough end to the year last year, her Dad, who which she was extremely close with, passed away rather unexpectedly.

So being treated to an amazing day like this would be great for her, as she hasn’t really treated herself to something special since.

She’s provided her three children with years of support as an “emotional anchor”, financial backing to pursue their dreams and “the best home cooked food in New Zealand”.

But when it comes to returning the favour, Matthew Coote said he was a little stuck on how to treat his mum Ngaire Coote like the queen she is. Particularly, he said, after she recently lost a very supportive figure in her own life – her father Bruce.

So when Matthew spotted YOU Magazine’s Mother’s Day competition to win her more than $1500 in gifts and services, it was an opportunity he couldn’t miss.

The Wellington-based young professional penned and posted us a heartfelt nomination letter for Ngaire, which instantly caught our attention among hundreds of entries.

“My Mum has done a lot for me over the years and I’ve never really been able to afford to give her something back to show her how much I appreciate her,” Matthew said.

Since Bruce’s unexpected passing in October, he explained that his mum “hadn’t really treated herself to something special”.

“So being treated to an amazing day like this would be great for her.”

Two frenzied phone calls and several days later, our smiling, bubbly winner arrived at the Guardian offices for her day of pampering and prizes.

Ngaire, an office manager for Tom Gundry Freight, said she hadn’t noticed the Mother’s Day competition in the last YOU magazine.

She said she had likely skipped over it because she no longer had her own mother to buy for, so the news that she had been selected for the ultimate pamper package came as “quite a surprise”.

“Matthew rung me asking if I could get Tuesday off work – and he actually sounded quite panicked”, At first she wondered whether something bad had happened, she said.

But any apprehension was quickly replaced with excitement as her son revealed why.

ming’ day On the morning of the big day on Tuesday, Ngaire conceded she was a little nervous, but mostly humbled and “very excited” for what lay ahead.

She was to receive all her prizes throughout one action-packed, luxurious day, with YOU magazine’s Emma Jaillet-Godin as her personal chauffeur.

The morning began with a coffee at Somerset Grocer, before Ngaire enjoyed $200 in treatments and $100 in hair care goodies from Vivo Hair & Beauty. For lunch, she caught up with two of her girlfriends as they shared a $100 lunch from Speight’s Ale House.

In the afternoon, Ngaire collected two tickets to Mamma Mia at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre from director Roger Farr valued at $118 and a $100 bouquet from Samantha Rose Flowers.

She then indulged with a $100 makeover and manicure from Swish Skin & Beauty, Some fantastic green shoes with a $300 voucher from Style Footwear, a $500 voucher and styling from Sparrows. The day wrapped up with a YOU Magazine photoshoot in the autumn sun, where Ngaire proved a natural model.

“It really is the whole package in one day,” Ngaire said, describing her excitement at the idea of just “being” throughout the experience – no thinking, no driving around, no coordinating.

simple gestures like breakfast in bed or, more recently, with the children in other cities, a phone call from afar.

“They always treat me very well though. It’s always just lovely to spend time with the family,” she said.

Ngaire is also mother to Logan, a third year student at teacher’s college in Christchurch and Abby, a Year 13 student at Ashburton College.

But times had been a bit hard lately, she said, having lost Bruce last October. She had been very close with her dad and he had been the “rock of the family”.

She had also lost her mother, Nancy, 15 years ago after a prolonged battle with multiple sclerosis, including time in a special care facility.

Getting ready for the joy of winter

W

inter is a season to be enjoyed – providing you’re well prepared.

And that means ensuring your home is warm, your firewood dry and your health is good.

Taking a few simple steps pre-winter could make the difference between weathering the chilly months and succumbing to winter ills.

Getting yourself ready

 Get your flu jab

 Wash your hands

Wash both sides of the hands and between the fingers for at least 20 seconds, use soap, and dry hands with a paper towel or clean dry towel.

 Don’t forget to exercise  Plan trips away

To avoid the winter blues, make sure you plan some trips away. It helps your mood and health to break your winter hibernation and have a treat planned.

 Choose healthy foods  Get fresh air into your home  Take care with coughs and sneezing

You may be spreading bugs if you are coughing or sneezing, and the best way to avoid this is to stay away from work or school.

Getting your house ready

 Heat pumps

If you use a heat pump keep it running.

If you’re out of the house or when you’re in bed, turn the heat down to 18 or 19°C. It’s also a good idea to do a little heat pump maintenance in advance of winter.

 Log fires

If you don’t have a good stock of dry firewood, you need to get some in now. Successful log fire burning relies on having dry firewood and plenty of it. There’s a feel good factor about a blazing fire that works wonders on a dreary wet day.

 Home insulation

Cold weather can be a risk to your health, make sure your home is properly insulated.

 Reduce dampness  Food stocks

It might be rare to lose power or for the weather to be so rough you cannot get out or shops are closed, but it pays to have the makings of a meal or two on hand, bottled water and alternative cooking equipment.

Getting your vehicle ready

 Water, windows and tyres

Top up the antifreeze in your radiator and top up your screen wash.

Make sure your vehicle has tyres with good tread and that those tyres are inflated to the correct pressure.

Stock up on emergency equipment in your car

Getting your outdoors ready

 Check your pipes are insulated

Insulating pipes has two benefits – you’ll keep the heat in, saving you money, but it also means reduced risk of frozen pipes which can burst, causing flooding, damage and leaving your home without water.

 Know where your toby box is

 Do a garden check

Trim overgrown branches back from the house and electrical wires.

Aerate the lawn, reseed, and apply a winterising fertiliser to promote deeproot growth come spring.

Clean and dry patio furniture. Cover with a heavy tarp or store inside a shed or garage to protect it from the elements.

Remove any attached hoses and store them away for the winter to prevent cracks, preserve their shapes, and prolong their life. Wrap outside faucets with covers to prevent water damage.

Clean leaves, dirt, and pine needles between the boards of wooden decks to prevent mould and mildew growth.

 Garden tools

Bring all seasonal tools inside and spray them with a coating of lightweight oil to prevent rust.

Clean down your lawn mower of mud, leaves, grass, and debris.

 Gutters, roofs and drains

Check for deteriorated flashing at the chimney, walls, and skylights and around vent pipes. Seal joints where water could penetrate, using roofing cement and a caulking gun.

Check the gutters and downspouts for proper fastening and re-secure if loose or sagging.

Clean gutters of any debris. Make sure downspouts extend away from the house to prevent flooding of the foundations and water damage from snowmelt.

Clean leaves and debris from courtyard and pool storm drains to prevent blockages.

Ensure all vents and openings are covered to prevent insects, birds, and rodents from getting inside to nest in a warm place.

Master the art of doing nothing

NATURALLY YOU with Jane Logie

Mastering the art of doing nothing seems quite easy, but when put into action it is quite the opposite.

Finding those spare moments to sit in total silence, alone and collect your thoughts can be difficult.

This allows the brain to wander and let the creative side flow, and come to the forefront, allowing the problem-solving side of the brain to seep in. But more importantly, a state of relaxation ensues, as we are so busy being busy that you actually forget to just stop and do absolutely nothing. And this is a way to find your zen again, in your body and mind.

If you are sitting outside, take a moment to just sit and look at the leaves falling from the trees, the clouds moving through the blue sky, the sun shining on your hands and feet, the leaves moving through the trees, the birds chirping and flying about doing their work.

If sitting inside, the fire flickering in the distance, the dust particles moving through the sunlight beams, the clock ticking, the heat pump humming, or just enjoying the total silence that surrounds you, without any music playing in the background to fill your mind. Let the natural sounds of your environment envelop you and allow yourself to just be in the present moment.

Maybe a cup of tea, or coffee, or a glass of filtered water with a slice of lemon or lime, and some ice cubes, could be a part of sitting still and just being in the present moment.

Practices like painting, yoga, receiving a massage, or doing individual exercise – eg running, swimming, cycling or walking – can allow the mind to do this, if sitting still in silence really isn’t your thing. Applying these practices for a longer duration, could help. They are just ways of getting away from all the everyday stuff that you often find yourself totally immersed in.

Doing this type of practice more often is important for changing your body’s biochemistry. It helps reduce the body’s circulating stress hormones, eg cortisol, as this hormone can be responsible for ill-health.

Shift the body and mind from the alpha state (busy) to the beta state (calm). It helps take the brain from the sympathetic state (stress), when the body’s gas pedal is full-on in the fight or flight arm of the central nervous system, to the parasympathetic (relaxed state), when the brake is put on.

If you can’t find the time, you need to make time. You can find those pockets of time, that you can set aside just for you.

Getting up earlier, going to bed earlier, or just taking a break when you see a moment to just chill. When you have to find

the time, you will find the time.

Doing nothing in total silence is quite a difficult task for some, as the majority of the day we are listening to something, or doing something, and rarely actually doing nothing. It is okay to take the time out to sit in silence and do nothing, and be present in the moment – away from computers, phones, TV/radio and people.

It is about finding your yin/yang, or otherwise known as passive/active, doing nothing some of the time and doing a lot most of the time.

The more often you bring this practice into your daily life, the more you will feel a lot calmer and more centred. It gives your mind and body the revitalisation it deserves, to have restored the energy you require and complete the things that need to get done for the day.

Raspberry frozen yoghurt cake We’re going pink with our recipe for Pink Ribbon Breakfasts.

This healthy raspberry frozen yoghurt cake would also be great for mums on Mother’s Day. It’s loaded with good nutrition – high in vitamin E, found in the almond meal, and good fats from the desiccated coconut.

The raspberries are high in vitamin C, and honey and lemon are important nutrients for healthy immunity, skin and adrenal health.

This cake is easy and quick to make.

It tastes delicious, can be made for a special occasion, and shared amongst family and friends. It can be kept in the freezer and you can just slice a bit off when required.

Mother’s Day is a great way to utilise this philosophy, to reflect and sit back, and look at the amount of time you are engaged, focused on what is at hand, run off your feet between jobs, trying to get through your day’s work.

Finding those spare moments throughout the day to sit quietly, alone and to enjoy that small amount of time you have to listen to whatever thoughts are presenting to your mind. This is a great way to calm the mind and body.

Practise 10-15 minutes up to four times a day.

The key to mastering the art of doing nothing is setting aside the time to do just that.

With the compliments of Jane Logie, a medicinal herbalist, clinical nutritionist and chef from Methven

BASE 2C almond meal 4T desiccated coconut 4T butter (runny) 4T honey (runny) 1T natural almond essence 1T vanilla bean extract essence 20cm spring form cheesecake tin

– Preheat oven to 180°C with rack in the middle of oven.

– Place the almond meal and the coconut into a medium-sized bowl.

– Place the runny butter, honey and almond and vanilla essence on top of the almond meal and coconut blend. Mix to form a sticky, clumpy mixture.

– Place the base mixture into the spring form tin and press evenly over the bottom.

– Place in the oven and cook for 10 minutes. If it rises, press the base down near the end of the cooking time. Take out of oven and allow to cool completely, before placing the filling on top.

FILLING 2C frozen raspberries (defrosted) 2 bananas 2C or 500g Greek vanilla yoghurt (or plain natural yoghurt) 1T vanilla bean essence extract 2T honey (runny) 2T lemon juice – Defrost the raspberries in a bowl.

– Measure all ingredients in food processer and blend until smooth.

– Place the filling on top of base in spring form tin and spread evenly.

– Cover with plastic wrap and freeze overnight.

– If using unsweetened yoghurt, add 2T of extra honey.

TOPPING 2C frozen raspberries 4T honey (runny) 4T filtered water

– Place the frozen raspberries, honey, and water into a shallow pan on medium heat on the stove.

– Let simmer, and bring to the boil for approximately 2-3 minutes, to allow to thicken.

– Over a bowl, strain the raspberry liquid from the raspberry seeds with a sieve.

– Set aside the raspberry coulis, allow to cool, then place in the fridge overnight to allow it to thicken.

– Place over the frozen yoghurt cake just prior to serving or after middle layer has frozen. Pop back in freezer.

– This coulis adds a bit more sweetness to the frozen yoghurt cake.

– Defrost for 20-30 minutes before serving with fresh raspberries and yoghurt. Serves 10.

– Option – Use strawberries instead of raspberries.

A confident retirement

There are three key ingredients to being confident about having a good retirement, research has revealed.

A survey of New Zealanders aged between 60 and 74 years has found those who plan early, get help from others and have a wide range of investments feel most confident about their golden years.

The research, by investment watchdog the Financial Markets Authority, showed those who planned at least 10 years in advance were the most confident, but even planning at least six years in advance boosted confidence.

FMA head of investor capability, Paul Gregory, said a lot of existing research showed how poorly prepared most older

Kiwis felt about their retirement.

“We wanted to engage with people about the factors that would make them feel confident and ask them why.”

Gregory said that getting advice from a professional worked, but was not the only route to confidence. “Talking to family and friends, opening some books or using the internet, or resources from a financial provider, were just as good.”

But it did find people who went though an adviser had a wider range of investments.

Gregory said the biggest difference came from starting early.

“They are also more likely to have a healthy retirement savings balance. But

there is still a lot of confidence and significant final retirement balances, among investors who started between six and 10 years out from retirement,” he said.

How to wise up for retirement: • Choose the most suitable investments for you and your goals • Know your finances and budget, so you can have confidence the money will last • Check in with your investments, including getting expert help, to get further guidance • Understand the investment risk, so you worry less about investments going up and down and also how it affects the amount of money you will have to live on.

The SuperGold Card is for eligible seniors and veterans, recognising the contribution you make to New Zealand society.

The card gives you access to discounts and offers from a wide range of businesses, government-funded free off-peak public transport concessions, services and discounts from your local council.

The back of the card indicates whether you are entitled to New Zealand Superannuation (NZS), the Veteran’s Pension and/ or Community Services Card. The card does not contain any personal information other than your name, client and card numbers, and any of these entitlements.

Body ‘n’ Beauty Worx has shifted into the same premises as Mirror Image on Tancred Street, and the resulting full day spa experience is proving popular among locals. YOU Magazine’s Katie Todd caught up with owner Di Thomas to chat about the move.

Nestled amid a leafy garden on Tancred Street, it’s not hard to see why clients love visiting Di’s new day spa. She’s styled a tranquil escape which feels far from the outside world and any smidgen of stress. Never skip a meal before getting on a coach for the day. You may not feel like breakfast but have it as you never know when the next meal will be available.

Drink heaps of water so you stay hydrated and take along a few snacks in your day bag as if you get the nibbles you have something.

What should you have in your day pack?

Rainproof jacket, you never know when you will need it!

Make sure you have a few local coins in your pocket as often you need to pay to use a bathroom (especially in Europe).

Many countries are not as familiar with EFTPOS as we are in New Zealand so make sure you have some local currency handy for buying water and the odd coffee and snack. I always travel with wet wipes as you can give your hands a frequent wipe so less chance of catching that dreaded flu while on holiday.

If you can, avoid buying food and supplies at service stations. Items are often twice the price when you buy from the side of a motorway so plan ahead and make sure you have all the essentials you need the day prior to getting on the coach.

Mastering the Mid Canty Mumble

There’s nothing I appreciate more when on the farm than being able to leave it for a few hours to indulge in a very Aucklandy flat white.

I love my coffee. But recently I discovered I’ve picked up a very rural problem.

I was in town recently and stopped for coffee.

The farmer and I have a hard and fast rule – if one of us is in town getting coffee and the other is on the ranch, then a double purchase must be made.

So I went in and ordered two small flat whites. “So, two soy flat whites?”

“Oh no no, two small flat whites,” I repeated.

The café lady laughed and said no problem. “No too hot either” I added, as I hate getting a nuclear-hot drink that takes an hour to cool down before I can drink it.

Was I mumbling or were the ladies struggling to hear? Then it dawned on me ... I’d picked up the fumbly farmer lingo, which is not good when you are a broadcaster and you rely on speaking clearly!

Have a listen next time you are near a farmer – especially if there are two of them having a yarn. They grumble and mumble and occasionally spit out a few audible key words, bloke laughs and chortles. But it’s pretty hard to follow the

entire conversation.

They are very similar to airline pilots – how many times have you been on a plane, when the pilot comes over the loudspeaker to tell you what the cruising altitude is?

It’s often “ah… mumble mumble… 32 thousand feet … weather in Auckland is mumble … if you look out to the right you’ll see we’re just flying over mumble, mumble …”

I often forget where I am actually flying to. This newly-adopted Mid Canterbury Mumble is something I will have to stamp out pretty quickly if I plan on addressing the nation on the news anytime soon!

Cool recipes for winter comfort

Some of my favourite winter comfort food, with a slight twist for perfection! Enjoy and take some time out to indulge!

Cheese scones

FOR FOODIES with Sarah Kingsbury

With the compliments of qualified chef and baker Sarah Kingsbury

Makes 12

1 large grater full of grated butter 4C self-raising flour 1t baking powder 3C grated cheese Cayenne pepper Salt and pepper 1 1/2 C milk

– Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl, lastly adding milk.

– The milk amount may need to be adjusted depending on your mix.

– Lightly knead and roll out on bench like a big sausage. Cut into 12 pieces and place on a lined baking tray. Sprinkle with grated cheese.

– Bake at 170°C for 18 to 20 minutes, or until golden.

Seafood chowder

3 large potatoes (clean skin and cut into 1cm cubes) 2 carrots (peel, chop as above) 3 celery stalks (chop as above) 1 red onion, chopped

– Cook above ingredients in a pot till tender, aproximately 20 minutes.

250g butter 1 1/4 C flour 1 litre cream 1 litre blue milk 1 tin smoked fish fillets 1kg bag frozen mussels 500g marinara seafood mix Lemon pepper and black pepper,

for seasoning Fish sauce, to taste

– Defrost seafood and cut each mussel in half, checking for hairs, etc.

Cut marinara up also.

– Melt butter in a large pot. Whisk in flour. Slowly add cream and milk, whisking till smooth and reasonably thick.

– Mix in all seafood, including fish and juice from tin.

– Mix in cooked vegetables and heat for 20 minutes on a medium heat.

– Add fish sauce to taste (approximately 1/4 C. Season with the lemon and black pepper.

Ginger kisses

2C flour 1T ground ginger 1t baking soda 1t cinnamon 1/4 t salt 1C caster sugar 1 egg 1T water 1/4 C golden syrup 165g margarine

– Cream margarine and sugar. Add egg. Beat in water and golden syrup.

– Gradually mix in sifted dry ingredients. Chill mix in fridge for half an hour.

– Weigh mix into 50g balls. Push down on to a lined oven tray and bake for 12 mins at 170°C. – When cool ice with cream cheese icing:

140g butter 280g cream cheese 600g icing sugar 1T ground ginger Mix all together till there are no lumps.

Ice and sandwich together.

Too busy to join?

“The TimeBank sounds great but I’m already involved in community things and am too busy to join.”

I’ve heard this a few times and it’s perfectly understandable if you see the TimeBank as another organisation to join. What is different about the TimeBank though is that for every hour you put in, whether it’s on the governance board, dog walking for a TimeBank member, baking a cake, chopping kindling or teaching someone how to knit, you earn time credits. One hour = one time credit.

You can help others when it suits you, when you have time and energy. You can access help when you need it too. I love spending my credits getting timebankers to do jobs that I don’t like doing, like cutting up my pumpkins and dusting the light shades.

Timebanking is a very flexible system involving a growing number of people in our region, many of whom are already heavily involved in their community – like Coby Snowden.

Coby is a busy person. She is mum to three girls, aged 18, 9 and 7, puts her accounting skills to good use as a trustee and treasurer of the CanInspire Charitable Trust, is an avid shooter and treasurer for the National Rifle Association, as well as numerous shooting clubs around the country. She’s involved with the kids’ school committee and local community trust. She tries to help husband John on the farm and control their garden, however, her farming and gardening skills are lacking, having lived in cities until marrying John 10 years ago.

Coby’s life is already pretty busy and she’s giving plenty to her community, so why did she not only join the TimeBank but also volunteer to be a trustee and secretary of the governance board that would get the TimeBank started?

“When I heard about timebanking, it was like a light bulb went off in my head.

I thought it was a brilliant idea. I enjoy helping others out doing the accounts, but

it would be nice for me to get some help too, especially with my garden. Timebanking just makes sense. Now I can do things for others and people can help me with what I need – whether it be a nicely decorated birthday cake for my kids or some gardening help.

“I’ve earned time credits for the work I’ve done as secretary for the Connecting Mid Canterbury Charitable Trust that runs the TimeBank. I’ve spent some of my credits attending a TimeBank Learning Exchange event about the universe.

“It was a really interesting presentation and then looking through the telescope at the night sky was amazing. It was so nice doing something for myself, but I think the kids would have really enjoyed this too.

“A TimeBank member reviewed accounts I did for Lagmhor School. She did a really good job and is happy to do it again for other groups that I prepare accounts for. I’ve also had some sewing done a couple of times. It is great to meet other members through these exchanges.

“My husband John was representing New Zealand at the Commonwealth

Games recently and just one week before we were to leave he received a badge that needed to be sewn on to his uniform – a tailor-made jacket for shooting. I don’t sew anyway, but couldn’t even get a needle through the canvas! I asked a timebanker to do it and, although she broke a needle, she did a thorough job and got it done well, to my relief.”

I asked Coby what it was like to attend the Commonwealth Games.

“Of course it was thrilling seeing my husband in action and enjoying the Brisbane weather. However, when I think of the Commonwealth Games, I immediately think of all the volunteers in their bright yellow outfits – always smiling and helpful.

They were all over Brisbane and the Gold Coast, just everywhere. Volunteers were in the role for 11 days, with many using up their annual unpaid leave to volunteer.

There’s something about being part of a big event, but even in Ashburton people could get that feel-good factor by helping each other and the wider community.

Sometimes I see people complaining about community-related things on Facebook and think, why don’t you get involved and do something about it instead of blaming our council.

“My advice to people would be to join the TimeBank. It’s a no-brainer. You meet people, you make contacts, it’s good for your mental health, gives you a purpose – you can do what you are passionate about, help others, share your skills and feel good about the community you live in.

“Yes, I like to keep busy and sometimes deadlines are stressful, but at the end of the day I find all I do rewarding. And I can ask timebankers to help me do the things I’m not good at, like gardening. I’m so happy I’ve got someone popping around on Sunday to help me!”

The Ashburton Baptist Preschool is a community based centre that started as a small group in the church over 30 years ago.

We are licensed for 69 children per day. We have three areas, the Mohi Kete means Moses’ basket (our under two room) – we can have up to 13 per day, Te Ruma Ako means the learning room (the over two area) and can have up to 26 per day and the Tuhura room means to learn, discover, unearth (three and a half to five years of age) and this can have up to 30 children a day.

We are very fortunate to be governed by an active trust board made up of members of the Ashburton Baptist Church who have a range of expertise and skills.

We believe that the preschool should recognise that every person is equally and infinitely valued by God and needs to experience the love of Christ.

We believe that all people are unique and made up of body, mind and spirit, all of which need to be nurtured.

As part of the church nationally we share a fundamental role in bringing about reconciliation and justice as envisaged in the Bible and covenanted in Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

We use the programme to encourage children to be involved in both structured and free playtime throughout the day.

We started by revamping our outdoor area in Te Ruma Ako which created a different feel for the environment and got rid of some wasted space.

From here we want to look at what other areas we can transform and how we can strengthen our links and involvement within our community to meet the needs of the children and their families who attend the centre.

We would also love to have a place where parents can meet formally and informally – encouraging conversations and relationships to form.

Gardening tips for May

In the past, May has been regarded as the beginning of winter, especially in cooler parts of the country, however, these days temperatures can fluctuate quite dramatically. Daylight hours are shorter, frosts will be occurring in central and southern regions, but regardless of the temperatures, it is time for winter gardening tasks to commence!

In the vege patch Harvest vegetables that were planted in mid-to-late summer. This includes artichoke (Jerusalem), beetroot, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, celery, leeks, onions, parsnips, potatoes, silverbeet and turnips. For continuity of harvesting, keep planting seedlings of cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach and silverbeet. You can also sow seeds of broad beans, onions, peas, radish and spinach directly into the soil.

May is the recommended month for planting garlic. Cloves should be planted 40mm deep and 60mm apart. They should sprout around 3-4 weeks after planting.

In areas of your vege garden where there are no winter vegetables growing, sow green manure crops like lupins and mustard. They should be dug into the soil in late winter/early spring and will improve the organic content of your soil.

Strawberries May is the traditional month for planting new strawberry plants. Prepare the soil thoroughly; adding compost and mixing it in with the existing soil. Create mounds 200mm above soil level to ensure good

drainage and early warming of the soil in spring. Plant your strawberry plants into these mounds at 150-200mm apart.

Flower garden Annuals Add fresh compost to your flower beds before planting out your winter flowering annuals. Varieties to plant include alyssum, aquilegia, calendulas, cineraria, cornflowers, larkspur, pansies, primulas, stock, violas and wallflowers.

Perennials As most perennials are dormant this time of the year, it’s a good time to divide them where they have become overcrowded or move them to another part of the garden. Garden centres now have stock of new seasonal perennials so there will be an excellent selection for planting.

Fruit trees It’s pruning time for pip and stone fruit trees including apples, apricots, nectarines, peaches and plums.

Grapes can also be pruned, however, wait until you have harvested your kiwi-

fruit before pruning vines.

Roses In warmer areas, some roses are still flowering, such as icebergs and graeme thomas. However, in cooler areas where leaves have fallen, plants can be pruned.

Apply a winter spray of a copper compound to help prevent typical rose diseases reappearing in spring. New roses will be in garden centres towards the end of May. Chose new specimens carefully, noting which ones perform best in your area.

Ornamental trees and shrubs New stock is beginning to appear in your local plant shops, especially camellias. If you are planning a new garden or adding new ornamental trees or shrubs to an existing one, always allow enough room for individual specimens to grow to maturity.

Prepare the site well for plantings, ensuring there is enough drainage so roots do not become waterlogged.

Lawns Growth will now be slowing and low-lying lawns will begin to become saturated.

Install additional drainage coil where required and before your lawn becomes too wet.

Hedges Final tidy-up time for your hedges. Do not undertake major trimming as there will be little or no new growth until spring.

Lesley Aldridge is this month’s winner with the following question: When I buy bare root trees to plant, please tell me how deep should the hole be and what is best to put in the hole, ie compost or manure, or not add anything at all?

Traditionally most trees were grown in the open ground for a number of years before being wrenched and dug up in early winter.

Plants were then sold either bare root (with no soil around the roots) or were balled in hessian cloth with soil still attached to the roots of the plant. Today it is quite rare to find bare root trees for sale; they are usually placed in large bags or pots with growing medium before being sold. To purchase bare root plants, you will have to make inquiries in your area about the location of wholesale growers and if they will sell direct.

Site preparation and actual planting are very important when planting bare root plants. The soil should be dug over thoroughly, ensuring you break up any heavy soil and adding generous amounts of compost to the existing soil.

As bare root plants usually have a more extensive root system than container-grown plants, the actual planting site should be considerably larger than usual.

After placing the new plant in the hole, backfill with a mixture of compost and existing soil, ensuring that the tree is placed at the same depth it was previously growing. You may need to stake the new specimen tree if it is tall and prone to rocking in strong winds. Mulch after planting with additional compost or crushed bark and then water thoroughly to ensure the soil is in firm contact with the root system.
