Tesla in risky territory

L

ordy it’s been a heck of a year for Tesla.

The Model 3 launched to critical acclaim, only to later be at the centre of multiple production bottlenecks.

It’s ‘autopilot’ technology has been called into question after a series of serious crashes, including a recent fatal crash.

And amidst these things as well as the Roadster and Semi truck they announced late last year, they also sent a car into space.

We’ve known for a long time that the company operate a little bit differently than oth-

ers in the motoring space, and for many that’s a good thing.

But finances and that whole ‘yet to make a profit’ thing have been matters in the background.

And now a new report from Bloomberg has cited that the company could be out of money by the end of the year.

The comprehensive report, which you can read in full by clicking here, shows that Tesla are carving through money like there’s no tomorrow – to the tune of approximately $10,000 every minute, which

equates to a tidy $13 million each day.

Bloomberg reports that Tesla’s free cash flow has been negative for five consecutive quarters.

In fact, only four quarters out of the previous 33 (dating back to late 2009) have shown positive statistics.

These numbers represent just a portion of what Bloomberg uncovers, with longterm debt, employee growth, rate of revenue per employee, and customer deposits (a figure on the increase), all featured in their self-sourced figures.

Perhaps the most telling paragraph, though, is this one: “Bruce Clark of Moody’s Investors Service recently that Tesla will need an additional $2 billion this year, and he noted that $1.2 billion

of existing debt will come due by 2019.

“Short sellers remain convinced that Tesla is on the verge of an epic meltdown.

“Famed investor Jim Chanos of Kynikos Associates has predicted the company is headed for a ‘brick wall.’”

All of that increases the pressure on the company to start turning over some kind of profit, which was initially slated to come from a scheduled production of 5000 Model 3 sedans every month.

But since that number’s been impossible to match thus far – assuming that trend continues – the money will need to come from elsewhere to ensure that Tesla doesn’t seize up before Christmas.

Of course, bail-outs have proven common in the American motoring space in the recent past, with several US automakers pleading on their hands and knees for Government assistance after the global financial crisis.

The difference here is that Tesla’s script cannot be predicted.

In the same dire straights, they took the opportunity to announce a 400km/h supercar and a semi truck ...

“There’s not another CEO in America who is taking as enormous of a financial risk on their company,” says Ross Gerber from Gerber Kawasaki Wealth & Investment Management.

He’s not wrong.

A prowling predator

T

he new Aston Martin Vantage is designed to look like a predator, from its gaping low-slung mesh grille through to its ducktail rearend.

Behind the wheel it feels like an aggressive hunter, urging the driver to push harder and faster into and out of corners, as it clings firmly to the road or track.

This is a hard-driving, track-ready sports car that comes with all the luxury you would expect from the British marque that has built a heritage around delivering speed in a tuxedo.

Aston Martin is currently in a sweet spot, as it celebrates a sales resurgence on the back of the success of the DB11, with new management and robust funding arrangements placing the whole operation on firmer ground. The company is relying on the new Vantage, traditionally its best-selling model, to maintain and increase that sales momentum.

But that hasn’t stopped Aston Martin taking risks with the new model, with radically different styling marking a clear departure from the more classic DB11.

We drove the new Vantage at the Portimao circuit in Portugal and on uncrowded motorways and winding mountain roads.

It was often cloudy and it rained most days, but this offered the chance to test the Vantage in wet conditions, on often slippery roads and track.

It was an opportunity to see whether its advanced electronic rear differential and

50/50 weight balance characteristics live up to the hype – and they do.

They help deliver a luxury sports car that clings to the road, even driving fast in sometimes greasy and wet conditions.

The Vantage steering is direct and as accurate as you would expect in an Aston Martin.

It excels when pushed either in track mode or sport-plus driving mode.

We took the Vantage up a narrow and windy mountain road, encountering a full range of road surfaces, from rutted gravel surfaces through to super-smooth multi-lane freeways.

The body is rigid, and the driver sits low and as close to the centre of the car as the designers could manage.

This all helps ensure the Vantage wraps around the driver, with the 4-litre AMG engine putting out 375kW of power and 683Nm of torque, ensuring there is an appropriately sporty soundtrack accompanying the drive.

The eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox smoothly delivers oodles of power. We experienced it on the track at more than 230km/h, when it sits firmly on the tarmac.

It travels from 0 to 100km/h in 3.7 seconds, and has a top speed of 314km/h.

The Vantage sells in New Zealand for just shy of $300,000.

It’s a numbers game

T

wenty eight is a rather special and quite important number.

Already some readers will relate to that because it may be a birth date – their own or the birthdate of someone they know – or perhaps an anniversary date.

Perhaps those who understand mathematics and/or numeracy may be thinking the writer has made that statement because twenty-eight is the only known number which can be expressed as a sum of the first non-negative integers (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7), a sum of the first primes (2 + 3 + 5 + 7 + 11) and a sum of the first nonprimes (1 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 9).

Research suggests there is probably no other number with this property.

The statement was not made for that reason.

Of course some may be thinking – understandably – what on earth does that hypothesis mean?

And others may be thinking twenty eight is special because in three out of every four years it’s the number of days in the month of February.

Maybe some readers will be thinking twenty eight is just another number and what on earth is the writer on about now.

Quite possibly our

ever-patient and helpful sub editor Steve will have similar thoughts going through his mind. (True. - Ed) Also understandable!

Furthermore what’s all this got to do with motoring?

Well the number twenty eight is very significant for a motoring related event which kicks off here in Ashburton tomorrow.

That’s right you’ve guessed it – the event is Wheels Week 2018.

Wheels Week, our uniquely Ashburton event, will provide a whole lot of enjoyment, fascination and fun for many people – young and not so young – over the next 16 days.

Fun for everyone, whether it be seeing a street parade, watching stock cars thundering around a track, seeing wheelchair basketball or classic boats.

For some, Wheels Week will involve picking up a bargain at the swap meet.

Or maybe passing on a bargain to someone else! And a myriad of other things too.

So what’s the number twenty eight got to do with it?

Well, it’s the number of businesses and organisations who sponsor Wheels Week.

Without those twenty eight sponsors Wheels Week wouldn’t be possible.

And of course it would not happen if it

wasn’t for a dedicated organising committee and a huge number of enthusiasts who make sure everything happens.

The number of individuals involved will definitely exceed twenty eight and includes many who have taken part previously.

And of course those numbers beg the question would we be – not just with Wheels Week but with so much of what happens – without willing sponsors and supporters.

Wheels Week which does so much for our town and began following an informal discussion, has grown into an iconic nationally recognised event.

Those who have made that happen deserve thanks and praise.

Article inspires memories of the late, great Jim Clark

H

aving already referred to some research here’s another reference: Transpose – verb - transposed, transposing. To change the relative position, order or sequence of.

No doubt now you’re really wondering!

Again understandable after all you may well ask what’s this leading to?

Well twenty eight (the number so important for Wheels Week) transposed becomes eighty two.

So what?

Well here’s what.

82 was the racing number of the Lotus race car in which Jim Clark conquered America at the 1963 Indianapolis 500.

The 50th anniversary of Jim Clark’s tragic death was acknowledged in a column two weeks ago.

In that column the writer suggested that for many people himself included that terribly sad occasion is one of those “I remember what I was doing when I heard that news” days.

Over the last fortnight several readers have confirmed that.

Many others experienced a similar reaction and have retained the memory 50 years on.

How a driver who was so good and so

careful, someone who could cope with the tragedies which surrounded him, end up like that is a familiar thread which runs through the memories.

Reasons for remembering Jim Clark are varied, but have one thing in common, they are all good.

Because of the man he was many readers have said that although they never met him – but may have seen him – they all feel as if they almost knew Jim Clark.

A couple of people have asked this writer about the feeling of devastation expressed in the last column.

In 1968 Warwick Protheroe and I travelled in his great little Fiat 500 to practice day for the Lady Wigram Trophy race.

We’d heard practice day was interesting because there was a chance to walk around the pits and get up close to drivers and cars.

It certainly was a great opportunity and by today’s standards security and health and safety aspects were far different.

Hay bales separated pit lanes and while negotiating one of those we came close – well not too close but a bit of licence is allowed and close sounds good – to being run over by none other than one of our heroes – Jim Clark.

We weren’t really at too much risk and he missed us.

Truth be told being the skilful professional he was and given we weren’t exactly in a perilous position the risk was minimal, but we did see the legendary driver heading in our direction.

It was one of several things which happened on the day which made it an outing to remember.

Little did we know that just three months later Jim Clark would be dead so having seen him not long before added to the sense of loss.

Conspiracy theories often arise after major events a well-known example being JFK’s assignation.

There were no suggestions of conspiracy relating to Jim Clark’s fatal accident.

At the time it was blamed on tyre failure, however recently it has been suggested his car may not have been properly repaired following a collision.

Comments from readers are a good example of one thing leading to another and in this case there has been another too.

By chance a ten-year-old motoring magazine passed on by Steve Gielingh includes an excellent and very interesting article written to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Jim Clark’s death.

That story is another reminder that in 1968 we lost an icon.

With the test drives in Wales, developers are rounding off the exceptionally diverse and intensive programme for the series development of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe.

Outside the racetrack and cordoned-off proving grounds, prototypes of the new model are also tested on public roads in order to obtain information on customerrelevant characteristics in driving situations that are as close to reality as possible.
