Ashburton fogging up its clean air record BY MYLES HUME
MYLES.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Ashburton’s exemplary clean air record this year has been tarnished in just 10 days as it recorded its third high air pollution day on Saturday – a level that would be deemed unacceptable come 2016. Environment Canterbury (ECan) recorded an average 24hour concentration of 72 micrograms of suspended particulate per cubic metre of air – the third time Ashburton has exceeded the national environment standard of 50 since June 4. If it was 2016, the third ex-
cessive reading would see ECan fail to meet standards set by the Government for Ashburton, Timaru, Christchurch and Kaiapoi which are not allowed to have more than three high air pollution days by then and one by 2020. The first two times this year Ashburton exceeded the health guidelines was on June 4, with a recording of 58 and the following day on June 5 with 74. Records show Ashburton’s total is dropping. There were four days recorded in 2013 and eight in 2012, while in 2006 there were 28 high pollution days with the
highest reading being 137. Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay said it was positive to see local figures dropping, but admitted the message was not getting through to some. Mr McKay said little wind and cool conditions could have contributed to Saturday’s poor reading, but pointed out “some frosty nights when I leave Ashburton I can still smell coal fires which are the worst offenders”. Timaru has been the region’s worst offender this year with 14 high pollution days while Christchurch has had nine and Kaiapoi six.

Mr McKay believed Ashburton was on track to meet the 2016 target. It comes as ECan consults with the community to update its air plan, which identifies what can be done to reduce air pollution. The current plan has been in place since 2002. Outdoor rubbish and stubble burning have been flagged as issues in Mid Canterbury. ECan was unavailable for comment yesterday, but is holding an air plan review public meeting at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre at 6.30pm tomorrow.
