Whatever happened to us?

Today we all seem to want the end result up front. I know the young ones of today have grown up with technology from day one of their life and can struggle with entertaining themselves without the use of electronic devices etc…

When I was a child, which was a wee while ago now (believe it or not) we had a games room, it was called outside! We would gather up all the neighbours and play Cowboys and Indians with sticks for guns and home made bows and arrows, or kick

Don’t get me wrong, I embrace technology wholeheartedly. I just think (broadly speaking) we may have given our children too much too early before they have a real understanding of true values. The point being, when our younger generation couples start looking for their first home today, most want all the bells and whistles, not a sound, basic home that can be remodelled or simply redecorated.

Has the technology they have grown up with robbed them of some basic skills? Yes granted not everyone has DIY skills, but you can learn or trade some of the area’s with friends (you maybe good at painting, a friend maybe a plumber or electrician or builder etc). The older generation weren't born with these skills either, they learnt them.

It’s a great feeling trying something new and achieving a result you previously doubted you could manage.

When you are born you can't run.

What I’m trying to say is, there are many opportunities out there for first home buyers, embrace them, as

long as the bones are sound, have a go!

My generation grew up in 100120sqm homes, these were mostly three bedrooms one bathroom one living. Some families were large, but made do and survived. This generation of home can be an easy redecoration project, some also being straight forward to extend.

At the end of it, you will be on the property ladder and will have gained some skills and should feel very proud of what you have achieved.

Look at each property, not at what it is now, but what it could be like, ie the kitchen is currently on the cold side of the house or the living area is disjointed from outside living space.

Some of these issues are very easy to remedy, others not so easy. When you have ideas, don't be scared to ask your real estate professionals opinion on finished project value, especially important if you don't plan on holding for long.

ALWAYS get a reputable builder to check the property and your ideas first, especially if you are thinking renovations or extensions.

But which ones should you choose? And what plants are going to be easy to care for and not require micro-managing on a daily basis?

For years interior designers have used potted plants to liven up a living space with the added benefit of bringing in powerful filters that purify the air around us.

Several studies have been conducted showing that certain plants can rid a room of up to 89 percent of harmful pollutants like formaldehyde and xylene.

Here are the eight best plants to beautify and purify your house: DENDROBIUM AND PHAELEONOPSIS ORCHIDS

Although orchids have a bad reputation as being finicky and difficult to grow the opposite is true. In fact many people end up killing their orchids with kindness (too much water and sunlight).

Aside from being easy to take care of, orchids rid the air of xylene, a pollutant found in many glues and paints so they make wonderful housewarming gifts for anyone who recently moved into or renovated a new space. Unlike some other plants, orchids also respire and give off oxygen at night - so they're great for the bedroom.

PEACE LILIES

The peace lily is ideal to have in your home if you love flowers but don't want to buy bouquets that die after a few days. They thrive in the shade in temperatures below 55 degrees and remove harmful toxins like acetone, ammonia, benzene, ethyl acetate, formaldehyde, methyl alcohol, trichloroethylene and xylene.

PHILODENDRONS

These are easy to care for houseplants that need very little attention.

Their unique coloUring makes them an attractive addition to your home and they're known to ride the air of xylene, a toxin that's found in many glues and leathers.

MASSANGEANA CANE

The Massangeana plant is a native to Africa and has a wild look that makes it ideal for decorating your home. It also sucks formaldehyde from the air.

Pothos is characterized by its golden heart-shaped leaves and is a hardy plant that can survive in lower light and colder temps and is great for offices and homes since it rids the air of carbon monoxide and formaldehyde Ferns have a reputation for being boring but their soft, feathery leaves help rid the air of pollutants like toulene and xylene, which are found in many paints, nail polishes and glues.

ANTHURIUMS

Anthuriums make lovely gifts because of their exotic-looking blooms and their large, dark leaves suck up ammonia, formaldehyde,

toluene and xylene, so they're a thoughtful present for a workplace (especially around copiers, printers or adhesives).

SCHEFFIERA

Schefflera are easily recognizable because they have glossy, sturdy-looking oval leaves that almost look fake because of their waxy shine. They're really hardy and long-lasting so they make great investment plants as long as you keep the leaves dust-free and wipe them down once in a while. In addition to looking great, they're also known to soak up nasty toxins like benzene, formaldehyde and toluene so, like palms, they're good for households where there's a smoker.
