Do your homework before buying a holiday property
“Remember that you can ask an agent anything you like about a property. Agents are not allowed by law to withhold any information they know about a property or, for example, relevant information about nearby developments.”
Owning a holiday property can be an attractive prospect. But property seekers need to remember to do their homework first, warns the Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA). REAA chief executive Kevin Lampen-Smith says potential buyers must remember to do the necessary groundwork. “Whether it’s a beachside dream home or a classic Kiwi bach, buying a property is a complex process. It’s crucial that you do your homework first to avoid any hassles,” he says. “ It’s easy to fall for an area or a property, but you need to be hard-headed about issues like coastal erosion, and the challenges and costs of ongoing maintenance and security.”
The REAA is an independent government agency established to promote and protect the interests of consumers when buying a property. It works to ensure a high standard of service and professionalism in the New Zealand real estate sector. REAA Chief Executive Kevin Lampen-Smith
Lampen-Smith recommends making a list of questions before visiting open homes.
Lampen-Smith recommends that you do your own research and seek legal advice before making an offer. This may include getting a property inspection report, a Land Information Memorandum (LIM) and a title search. The REAA’s free guides to buying and selling

GARDENING
School holiday boredom buster
Henri Ham
Awapuni Nurseries
It’s been a while since my daughter required entertaining in school holidays, but I can still appreciate the need to have a few tricks for boredom-busting up the sleeve. And given we lived, and still do, on-site at the nursery it’s probably no surprise that my number one trick is to get gardening particularly growing vegetables. Getting busy in the garden is a great way to entertain kids but it also gets them outside and can help instil from an early age a love of nature, plants and growing. My three tricks for gardening with kids are – keep it quick, keep it easy and keep it fun. Keep it quick means plant fast growing vegetables that can be harvested early. Veges like radishes, lettuces, peas, spinach and zucchini all mature quickly and can be eaten off the plant or before they fully mature. Next, keep it easy. This means making sure you pick the right spot for their garden. Don’t fob them off with a dreary part of the garden. Give them a prime spot to plant. This will help them get the best results and ensure they stay encouraged and interested. It’s also important to make sure you plant the seedlings in places it’s easy for small people to reach and work on. If you can, get them their own kid-sized tools to make it easy for them to dig and

plant. Ones like the set we sell at www. awapuni.co.nz are bright and colourful and perfect for small hands. And, as a general rule, plant seedlings over seeds. Unless you’re planting something like sunflowers, it’s easier and far more likely to get you better results if
you plant seedlings. The reason is we’ve already done all the hard work of getting the seeds germinated and established as plants – a process which isn’t easy and can take anywhere from six to 12 weeks. That’s a lot of time in a kid’s world!
different and colourful or can be eaten straight from the garden. Try rainbow beet for it’s colour, Italian broccoli for it’s space-aged looking shape and sugar snap peas and butter beans for their tastiness straight off the plant.
Next, keep it fun. Grow anything that’s
And don’t let the fun stop at planting
and eating. Get your kids involved in any form of pest control. Who doesn’t remember trying to catch white butterfly with nets? Or for a more modern approach, send your kids out with water guns to get the butterflies or water the plants.

Keep your garden tidy We all know how hard it is to keep your garden neat, especially when you do it all in one swoop, so try these easy ways yo keep your garden neat with less effort.
Trim Your Plants Trim away any sprawling plants to keep your garden looking neat and tidy. This very simple task can have your garden looking fantastic in minutes. Get a good pair of gardening scissors and make sure you wear gloves to keep your hands protected.
Regular Weeding The most effective way of weeding is to pull them out by the root. But today, there are also many weed killer sprays and powders available to purchase from most garden centres or supermarkets. There are also some homemade weed killing remedies you could try such as boiling hot water, bleach or vinegar.
Keep your tools tidy. Tools and gardening equipment can create clutter if they are not stored away properly. A garden shed is a fast and simple way of keeping everything you need in one place. Not only that, but garden sheds can also add another dimension to your garden. There are many different shed sizes available to suit all yards.

A quick sweep and hose down will usually do the trick. Cleaning your patio will prevent build-up of dirt, grime or moss. Moss killers are available from supermarkets and garden centres if you need some extra help in getting rid of the unwanted growth.
You can scrub your patio with warm water and soap or you can use a pressure washer to target more stubborn dirt.
Clean Your Outdoor Furniture Outdoor furniture is a fantastic addition to any garden and it can
transform your outdoor area into a brilliant social space. Garden furniture should be wiped over with a wet cloth every week, and every so often, they may need a more thorough clean or polish. Just be sure to check the care instructions with your furniture.
