Cementing style with concrete Story by Amanda Wright Concrete seems like one of those old-fashioned building products that you use out of necessity, such as for the foundation of your home, yet some of the world’s most innovative contemporary architecture are crafted from concrete. Looking at an ordinary concrete surface, such as the concrete pillars you would see on a bridge, you see an uninspired texture and a dull gray. However new advancements in concrete are completely changing the design and construction worlds, and the results are only limited by your own imagination. For example, did you know that there is translucent concrete? Yes, concrete that you can actually see through? This isn’t achieved by holes in the concrete, but rather optical fibres which transmit light from one side to the other. This new advancement allows shadows and light to pass through a thick slab of concrete, without deteriorating the strength. In cases, is even makes the concrete strength more superior than a traditional concrete composition. This “see-through” development is changing the perception of concrete’s opaque mass. This evolved state is known as light transmitting concrete, and can be used in many applications, including load-bearing walls. Glass fibres transmit light by points between the wallsurfaces. Imagine bringing natural light into your home, using the shadows of nature as wall-art. This has recently been made famous in Germany, where an entire wall in a car parking building was created from translucent concrete, reducing the need for artificial lighting during daylight hours.

Another form of concrete adding ambient light is by the use of glow-in-the dark aggregates. By day, the concrete looks normal, slightly decorative, but by night it creates a luminescent glow. Not only does it look spectacular, but can reduce energy costs by eliminating the need for driveway lighting. As concrete is an exceptionally versatile building material, more people are realising the endless possibilities it represents, from cost-effective flooring to bench-tops and vanities with a difference. With the use of bold color pigments in combination with white cement and decorative aggregates, the spectrum of colours available in concrete bench-tops and vanities is virtually endless. Expensive tiles are a thing of the past, when you can create the same look from concrete. With the advances in colour pigments for concrete as well as stains and patterns, concrete floors can take any shape the mind desires, and are becoming increasingly attractive for home-owners. Stamped surfaces are created by pouring wet concrete into a mould of a particular design, allowing the concrete to mimic a wide range of surfaces, such as brick, wood, natural stone, sacking and more. The use of a cement-based render on interior walls also allows for a wide range of textures to be created, and can simply be painted any colour to match your interior décor. OCR Kiwisaver and Welcome Home loans = now is the time to BUY!! W

hilst writing this comment it was noted that fifteen economists expected the OCR to remain at 2.5% with some seeing likely that there may be a lift by the end of this year. I personally cannot see any changes until at least early March next year given the line that the Reserve Bank is considering to raise the LVR to around 20% to dampen the Auckland house bubble. If the Reserve Bank is successful with a lift in the LVR criteria to around the 20%, it will have a dampening effect on not just the Auckland housing market but Nationwide. Unfortunately this move would not be in the best interests of the 1st home buyers. Hopefully government action with raising the amount that can be borrowed through the Welcome Home Loan System and increased eligibility criteria of 1st home buyers through their Kiwisaver to purchase a property could offset this. On the interest borrowing rates we have seen more and more increases in longer term fixed loan rates with the banks that appear to maybe substantiate a lift sometime in the not too distant future.

O

ther than the scent of sunscreen and barbeques, there’s little else that captures the essence of summer as the taste of a juicy, sweet strawberry. But this year instead of relying on the supermarket to stock the heavenly berry, why not grow your own? Strawberries are one of the easiest plants to grow, so even if you don’t have particularly green thumbs, with a few simple tips you could be reaping the rewards of delicious fruit for Christmas for the sake of an afternoon’s effort. They will add some luscious colour to your garden, or you could even grow them in hanging planters or pots. This is because they take very little space for planting. In the cooler, southern parts of New Zealand, August through to September is prime strawberry planting time, and local garden centres and nurseries are stocked up with healthy new season plants ready to be planted. Planting your strawberries in the cooler winter months will increase vigour and produce a higher number of berries over the months, and there’s no comparison to the taste of sweet homegrown berries to those which have been grown commercially. Think of it as

an investment into the health of your family, as strawberries are a fantastic source of vitamin C and antioxidants. To ensure there are plentiful berries to satisfy everyone in the family, plant five or six plants per person. If you already have strawberries in the garden, now is the time to separate the plants for re-planting to create more bang for your buck, or in your case, more strawberries in summer. Detach the runners so that your plants concentrate their energy on the fruit rather than foliage, and if the runners are hearty, you can re-plant them for more plants to form. If you are planting new strawberry plants, find a section of garden which has excellent drainage, but not too dry. Also choose an area which receives plentiful sun, as the more time the berry can spend in daylight, the sweeter it will become. Fertilise the soil well down to a depth of about 30cm to ensure your plants have a healthy start. Use a combination of fast and slow release fertilisers to keep the plants nourished throughout their growing time. Strawberries don’t perform if they are water-logged, so create mounds for each plant to be planted on. This will improve drainage and will also raise the

berries slightly so they receive more air and sun. After you have created your mounds, cover the soil in black ploythene. This will stop the growth of weeds and will prevent berries from sitting upon soil. Fresh straw will work just as well, or you can use both polythene and straw. Ripening berries can burn on the polythene so this is why the straw is handy, and it also helps to prevent snails from attacking the fruit and will conserve water. Water your strawberries regularly throughout the growing season, but ensure the water doesn’t pool. Just remember that the soil should always be moist, but never wet like a puddle. Just as we enjoy eating strawberries, they enjoy eating too, so to encourage growth and delicious tasty berries, invest in some strawberry food to keep your plants well-nourished throughout the growing season. It can actually enhance the taste of the fruit your plants will produce. Follow these hints and tips, and in three to four months you will be dining on the most delectable strawberries in town.
