Deadline looming for replacement All older-style woodburners 15 years old or more can be replaced with a low-emission woodburner provided that a building consent has been issued by the Ashburton District Council before October 31 this year, according to new rules introduced by Environment Canterbury. If a building consent has not been issued by this deadline, homeowners in Ashburton with older-style woodburners 15 years plus can only replace their burner with an ultralow emission burner. Homeowners with woodburners that reach their 15th birthday after October 31 this year will also need to apply for a building consent if they want to replace the burner with a low emission one. The application needs to be made before they expire (at 15) or before 2019, whichever is earlier. “So we can all enjoy warm homes and clean air, we’d like people to change to cleaner heating options as soon as possible,” said Environment Canterbury Councillor Peter Scott. “We’re enabling a lot more homeowners to upgrade to a low-emission burner than previously planned, so people have plenty of time to make the change and help clear the air,” he said. “There’s already been some very good progress in reducing high-pollution nights in Ashburton, and we want to keep up the good work to achieve the clean air people want to breathe.” Ashburton had two high pollution nights last winter, down from nine in 2014, reflecting the downward trend over most of Canterbury since Environment Canterbury’s programme to replace olderstyle woodburners began. After Queen’s Birthday weekend, a team of spotters will be patrolling Ashburton looking for smoky chimneys. If smoke is spotted, the burner user is left a bundle of free kindling with a note about how to finetune their burning technique so there is no visible smoke. At the third visit, if smoke is spotted, a warning letter is left and at the fourth visit, an abatement notice issued. Last winter, Ashburton woodburner users were issued with three warning letters but no abatement notices. Mr Scott said low-income households needing financial assistance to replace
their older-style woodburner could well qualify for some of the grants available – several hundred people had already taken up the financial assistance offer to change to cleaner heating technologies and add insulation to their homes. Typically, an older-style woodburner does not meet a 1 gram emission limit and so is not on the Environment Canterbury authorised list.

Onions – the must-have vegetable supply of produce ready to harvest.
Yes, I know we like to harp on about must-have vegetables and herbs here at Awapuni. The problem is, once you start growing and enjoying home-grown food, the list of must-haves seems to grow too. But I really do think onions are at the top of that list and should be grown in every vegetable garden.
You can grow onions pretty much anywhere in the garden – they also grow well in pots. But make sure the soil is friable (goes crumbly when you touch it). If it’s not, simply give it a good dig over and add a bit of compost and fertiliser.
In my vegetable garden I like to grow red onions. But I don’t stop there. I also stagger plant spring onions, regular brown Pukekohe Longkeeper onions, pearl drop onions and red-bunching spring onions. For the newbie gardeners out there, stagger planting (or staggering) is when you plant a few seedlings of the same

varieties (ie broccoli or onions) every few weeks to ensure you have a constant

Or you could try growing spring onions in between. They will be ready to harvest much earlier at around six to eight weeks,
so will be out of the rows before the larger onions need the space. Simply plant your spring onions around 4cm apart from the next. You can harvest your spring onions at any time. But the longer you leave them the bigger they will get until they go to seed. Your larger onions will take around 20 to 24 weeks to be ready and you can tell when they are because they start to pop right out of the ground. If they start to flower, we also recommend harvesting them as onions that have started to bolt or go to seed don’t store very well. Don’t worry if they’re green, you can still eat them.
