Clean decks Big, beautifully stained wooden decks look amazing … until you get an unwanted stain on it. How do you get rid of it without having to purchase a specific deck cleaner, or worse, having to re-stain your deck? Decks have to deal with a lot of abuse – there’s barbecues and dinners, to play dates with messy kids – so stains can be varied, but how do you get rid of some of the more common ones you might find on your deck? Sometimes it can be done with the help of a few things commonly found around the house, and some elbow grease. • Any deck is bound to be damaged by plant stains at some stage – often by leaves, or moss. If plant material touches wood for a significant amount of time they can leave behind stains, but to get rid of them you can use a combination of bleach and water. Leaf stains can be scrubbed away with a solution of one part bleach, to one part water, while for moss, try four parts bleach to one part water.
