Winter tips

So we are into daylight savings plunged into winter overnight.

BY TERRY LOBB So we are into daylight savings. I will be so pleased when it is over as it seems to go on forever and I really don't like getting up and waiting until it gets light at 7am.

Days become shorter and the time for painting the exterior of our homes also shortens as the dew takes longer to shift and falls earlier in the day.

With the evenings drawing in and the nights and mornings definitely cooler, it's time to think about keeping warm over winter and making our homes more inviting.

I put my pillow in the drier for a quick spin in the winter and this keeps the pillows plumped and dry.

Isn't it funny how when we turn the clock back to real time and the mornings become lighter, we suddenly seem to be

and pillows out in the sun to fluff the feathers. Over time, the feathers tend to dampen and stick together so this is a good way to inject some life back into them.

It is like sleeping on a little electric blanket in your pillow if you like feather pillows. Change into winter colours and put away those more cooling tones.

I put my pillow in the drier for a quick spin in the winter and this keeps the pillows plumped and dry and it's really nice on a cold night.

Warmer-coloured bedding is more inviting on winter nights, as is a mixture of texture, snug mohair or possum fur throws.

It is a great time for thinking about sprucing up the interior, perhaps a lick of paint or wallpaper.

If you work towards a plan, it's surprising how one or two changes in a room can make a big difference.

MY FAVOURITE time of day is early morning when the light is soft and subtle and the day is just waking.

Peace and quiet, no phones, no crashing of breakfast plates, no hustle and bustle of racing out the door for school or work.

My kitchen is painted in Resene Festival with almost-black joinery and a black granite laminate benchtop. The house was built in 1976, so there has been plenty of time for movement in

I decided when I revamped my kitchen and dining room to have the best of both worlds and used wallpaper and paint for the walls. I like the feel and look of textured walls and I wanted a certain colour, so the decision was easy.

The walls weren't perfect, so the wallpaper would cover up some of the defects, if not all of them ... dream on. It seemed to take ages to get what I thought was a perfect surface for wallpapering (me being me, I wanted to do it myself so there wasn't anyone to blame).

Get professional advice on anything you are unsure of and don't be impatient Having gib-stopped the walls to perfection, put my sealing coat on, then wallpaper, I was ready to paint.

When the morning light floods in, the room glows and even on a dull day it

is a pleasure to walk into the room, the colour is so welcoming. The sharpness of the black and yellow is perfect - good clean lines and lots of working space.

My perfect wall has the ugliest imperfection across the length of it, where the gib is joined horizontally and the old overhead cupboards were removed.

In most lights you can't see the defect at all but - and it is a big but there it is for everyone to see with that very critical light, the morning sun, which peeks over the hill filling my kitchen and showing every defect in the wall.

So to correct it, the wallpaper needs to come off and I need to start the process again - hence nothing has been done.

With many old houses you will often get the same problem - it is part of the character of the house - but this also happens in new homes.

Often the painter gets the blame for shoddy workmanship. But look again - is it the paint or the wallpaper or is it underneath? Many times we can't see if there is a defect, but if you have critical light shining on a wall you will see the defects if there are any.

If you thought 10 million was an extravagant figure to place on a property, then how about 50 million? 200 million? Surprisingly, this figure isn’t even close to the value of the world’s most lavish properties.
