Cool cucumber I often hear gardeners say nothing beats eating home-grown fruit and vegetables. In fact, I say the same thing myself. And if I had to pick one plant that this really rings true for – I would pick cucumber. The cucumbers we have grown in the past few seasons have been crisp, juicy, cool, delicious and would, no question, beat store-bought cucumber by miles any time. So, if you only plant one vegetable this season, though technically a fruit, I strongly recommend you consider cucumber. And don’t stop with just telegraph cucumber (the long, skinny one most commonly found in the supermarket), try growing a selection of cucumbers. Lebanese has tender, edible skin with sweet, mild-tasting flesh. Short-green is great for growing in smaller gardens as it produces a lot of fruit but only requires one third of the space of other cucumbers. And apple looks much like an apple (opposed to the long look of a telegraph cucumber) and it grows really nicely along the ground. Order your cucumber seedlings from our online shop at www.awapuni.co.nz and get your plants delivered direct to your door. One regular-sized bundle (which includes three seedlings) is around enough to feed a family of four. Once you’ve got your plants, it’s time to find a place to plant them. They like a warm, dry and sunny spot to grow in. And most varieties will need a bit of space. Telegraph and short green cucumbers will need to either be staked or grown next to something they can grow up – like a trellis. Plant these varieties around 1m apart so each plant has its own trellis/area to spread over. Apple cucumbers will happily grow along the ground and are a good companion plant for zucchini as they like the same conditions. For a regular-sized bundle with three seedlings you’ll need an area around 2mx2m and each seedling should be planted about 1m apart. I like to imagine I’m planting them in the shape of a triangle and each seedling goes on one of the points of the triangle, this way the plants are grouped together but have enough room to spread out. Dig in some compost or leftover potting mix into the soil to ensure its friable (breaks up) before you plant. To encourage fruiting it’s a good idea to

plant your cucumbers (and zucchini) near some bee-attracting plants like lavender or borage. Doing this will help ensure the bees pollinate your plants and as a consequence the fruit develop. If the plants aren’t pollinated properly the flowers will fall off and no fruit will develop. If you’d like to be really sure they’re pollinated, try touching the pollen on each plant with a paintbrush – this will spread the pollen from one flower to the next. One of our customers also told us to do the same with an electric toothbrush, minus the toothbrush head. I’m yet to try this approach but would love to hear from anyone who has! In around 10 to 12 weeks you should be able to enjoy the cool and juicy taste of home-grown cucumbers.

Backyard bounty Having a full fruit bowl is one of the delights of living within a country that grows some of the most delicious fruit in the world, but as we learn more about pack-house procedures, we can be forgiven for wondering exactly how fresh our store-bought fruit really is. Homes of old traditionally had a fruit tree in the yard, but as property sizes have reduced and people have become timepoor, the old timber of yesteryear has been dug out from the roots and replaced with low-maintenance garden beds full of bark and grass. However with advances made in dwarf and grafted fruit trees, it’s never been easier to own an orchard in your own backyard. Growing your own fresh fruit, sunripened and picked straight from the tree is one of nature’s delights, and many are re-discovering this simple pleasure by planting smarter. Mini fruit trees are set to become the next big thing in backyard gardens, as they produce crops of fullsized, delicious fruit, and are so easy to grow you can even put them into pots. The selection available on the market is rapidly growing, and already there is a large selection to choose from. The possibilities for intensive tree fruit planting are endless. You can plant more than one tree into a hole, resulting in an area which produces a mixture of varieties, and in some types of fruit that require a male and a female, such as the feijoa, this is a good way to save space. You can
braid varieties together, arrange them into hedges across your fence-line and graft varieties together. If you aren’t a confident grafter, you can even purchase pre-grafted tree varieties. It is actually possible to purchase an apple tree that grows three varieties of apples on the one tree, or even crazier, a tree which will grow both peaches and nectarines. The varieties of grafted trees are quite extensive, so with some clever planning, you can end up with multiple varieties of fruit, which will grow at different times of the year, meaning year-round fresh fruit for
you and your family. Trees require a well-drained position where they will reach plentiful sunlight and protection from strong wind. For best results, ask your nursery for advice on each particular tree before you plant it, to ensure it receives adequate nutrition from fertilisers and mulching. When the tree begins to produce fruit the size of a pea, you should thin the fruit, meaning that you remove the majority of fruit from large clusters to ensure the fruit you leave has room and nutrients to grow. In some cases you will actually be removing 80 per cent
or more of the fruit, but this will ensure the fruit which does grow will be healthy and delicious. Many dwarf varieties grow well in pots or half wine barrels, so consult with your nursery about the best sized pot to allow for adequate space for the roots. With some pre-planning, advice from your local experts and some time on the end of a shovel, you can have year-round fruit gracing your dining table for years to come.

New season, new look Some go for spring cleaning this time of year, while others pursue a more permanent endeavour – such as getting the house freshened up with a new look. If you are of the latter persuasion, read on. Spring always begs lightheartedness, and the new decorating themes back that up. Light backgrounds on walls, floors and furniture set the stage while pops of colour with accessories and fabrics bring out the owner’s personality. The light background colours include cream or beige, white and soft grey. The pops of colour are all up to you. Whatever colours make you happy will make the room pop just fine. That light colour on furniture is particularly visible in woods. Dark wood was popular before, but the trend is definitely moving toward light wood or mid-toned natural-wood finishes. Furniture arrangement has shifted from the wide-open spacious look to a more intimate plan. Think of how you can arrange your furniture in a more familiar, cosy way with conversation areas welldefined. What about fabrics? Is there more to the fabric selection than simply beige? Well, there is. To the simple neutral colours, you will find metallic threads added. This is in keeping with the light look as the metallic threads lift the visual feel of the fabric. Oh, and there is a comeback some might
be happy about but others not. Faux fur and textured knobby fabrics. Go figure. But the choices are more than that. The current trend in fabrics also includes plaids, stripes and modern florals, mostly in bold colours.
As seen in the metallics woven into the fabrics, gold, silver and other metallics in accessories and accents are in.
As mentioned, your favourite colours are the ones you should use, but I will tell you the popular ones for this year.
As far as style, any one you prefer is fine, whether contemporary, country, traditional or eclectic.
Jewel tones, such as emerald green, golden yellow, sapphire blue and ruby red.

the question, but it still is possible if you are willing to search for items. Refurbished secondhand furniture from thrift stores or consignment shops is one option. The entire house doesn’t have to be a hand-me-down place, but a few reclaimed pieces actually add charm and personality to any room.

Give it a green clean With spring in the air it’s that time of the year when the house can get a good onceover. Why not go for the green alternative as opposed to chemical cleaners? Try these green methods to spring clean.
IN THE KITCHEN •
Appliances: Sprinkle with baking soda, spritz with water and scrub. The soda removes grime, grease and odours. Rinse with plain water. Inside the refrigerator, keep an open box of baking soda to absorb odours. After three months, put that used baking soda down the garbage disposal to freshen it.
•
Counters: Spritz with 1 cup of white vinegar mixed with 1 cup of warm water. Wipe dry.
•
Wood cutting board: Cut a lemon in half. Sprinkle the board with salt. Use the cut lemon as a scrubber with the salt.
•
Aluminum pots and pans: To remove discolouration, mix 2 tablespoons of white vinegar with 1-1/2 tablespoons cream of tartar. Add to pot with 4 cups of water and heat over low heat. Simmer until stains disappear. For residue at bottom of pan, pour in 1/2 cup each of white vinegar and hot water. Let soak three hours, then wash.
•
•
Cast-iron cookware: To clean inside of pan, sprinkle with salt and wipe. For outside of pan, wipe with waxed paper while still a bit warm.
Chrome: Dampen a cloth with white vinegar and rub faucets. Or use strong black tea that has been steeping in the pot; that shines chrome and cuts grease, too. Or rub fixtures with a half lemon dipped in salt.
•
Porcelain: Rub with soft cloth sprinkled with salt.
•
Bathtub ring: Add 1/2 cup of baking soda to the tub of water. Let sit a few minutes before emptying.
•
•
Copper: For the copper bottom of pots, sprinkle salt and lemon juice or vinegar over bottom and rub lightly, then wash.
IN THE BATHROOM •
with a soft cloth and rinse with warm water. To remove stains, make a paste of cream of tartar and hydrogen peroxide. Apply it, let sit a few minutes, then rinse clean.
Enamel: White vinegar removes mould and soap scum. Wipe it on
•
Shower curtains: To remove soap film, place the shower curtains in the washing machine with several old, large bath towels. Add 1/2 cup of vinegar and run on cold cycle (don’t add detergent). Remove curtains before spin cycle starts and hang immediately. Rewash bath towels with detergent. Showerhead: To unplug holes, soak the showerhead for two hours in a mix of equal parts of white vinegar and warm water.
•
Tile: Mix 2 tablespoons vinegar (white or apple cider) with 1 quart warm water. Clean with soft cloth. Rinse.
•
Toilet: Pour one can of cola (Coke or Pepsi both work) into toilet bowl. Let sit one hour. This removes most stains.
•
Glass cleaner: As an alternative to ammonia, try 1/2 cup cornstarch mixed with two litres of warm water. Rinse with a spritz of white vinegar mixed with water and wipe again.
TM
Wallpaper: To remove dirt or marks on non-washable wallpaper, rub with a slice of plain white bread. The bread acts like an eraser. (This works on painted walls and wool carpet, too.)
•
Acoustical tiles: Use a plain, dry sponge; it will erase grime.
•
Mini-blinds: Put on plain cotton gloves and wipe down each slat by hand; the dust comes right off. Or try a used dryer softener sheet; its anti-cling properties pick up dust, too.
•
Odours: Make your own air freshener. Combine a cup of white vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract. Fill a spray container or plant mister and spritz the air. Or put a small saucepan on the stove with 1 cup water and 1 tablespoon vanilla extract. Simmer for 10 minutes.
•
Woodwork: Clean with soft cloth dipped in cold black tea. Squeeze one lemon into 1 quart water and use as a rinse.
•
Floor cleaner: Mix 1/4 cup each white vinegar and water-softener crystals with 4.5 litres of warm water. Wipe floor dry as you wash. Or mix equal
IN ANY ROOM •
parts vinegar and warm water with a few drops of baby oil. (The oil adds shine.)
Use the cornstarch formula to clean vinyl blinds, too. •
Carpet: To brighten a light, solidcolour carpet, sprinkle a little cornmeal and brush into carpet. Then vacuum.
•
Carpet stains: Check for colourfastness first. Mix 2 tablespoons each of baking soda and salt, then add just enough white vinegar to make a paste. Apply paste to stain and let dry. Vacuum. (For a nasty stain, you may need to scrub in the paste.)
•
Pet stains in carpet: While the stain is still fresh, mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar with 2 cups of warm water. Wet the area well. Sprinkle baking soda over area and scrub with a damp colourfast sponge. Rinse well with warm water and pat dry.
•
To remove pet hair: Put on heavy plastic dishwashing gloves and lightly dampen them. Run gloved hands over the upholstery or bedding. The gloves will pick up the hair, which can then be washed off. Or use a damp sponge; it will quickly pick up pet hair from pillows and upholstery.
