o celebrate the return of a Brabham works car to the racing track this month, Brabham Automotive is pleased to announce the inclusion of a Competition specification within the Brabham BT62 range.

Brabham Automotive customers now have three variants of BT62 to choose from, the Utimate Track Car, Competition Spec and - Road Compliant Conversion.

Production remains limited to just 70 vehicles – irrespective of variant – with all cars available in either Celebration or Signature liveries. All variants including the Competition specification vehicles are available in either left or right-hand drive.

Competition specification vehicles are fully upgradeable to either Ultimate Track Car or Road Compliant specifications at any time.

It has the same lightweight, FIA compliant carbon-chromoly safety cell with integrated roll cage. It retains all the performance of the Brabham 5.4 litre, naturally aspirated V8 engine delivering 700hp mated to a 6-speed sequential gearbox.

Completing the performance package are Brabham’s carbon-on-carbon brakes, which, coupled with motorsport ABS and traction control, provide unrivalled on-track stopping power and control.

The Woodies!

O ur friend Roger Hart deserves all the credit for this story.

The thing is, he emailed some fantastic photos of Woodie wagons and it only took one look to know these should be shared with our readers.

But of course it also raised a question – how did these fabulous vehicles come about?

A Woodie is a type of vehicle on which the rear bodywork is constructed of wood, or is styled to resemble wood elements.

Originally, wood framework augmented the car’s structure.

Over time manufacturer’s supplanted wood construction with a variety of materials and methods evoking wood construction including infill metal panels, metal framework, or simulated wood-grain sheet vinyl bordered with three-dimensional, simulated framework.

wagon usually required over 150 sizes and shapes of wood, from strips several feet long to tiny framing blocks.

The bodies also required hundreds of different parts from hardware to safety

glass.

Wood-bodied wagons are actually heavier than their all-steel counterparts.

The Ford Model A of 1929 was the first mass-produced Woodie.

The body style proved so popular that Henry Ford was convinced wood was here to stay so he bought more than 400,000 acres of woodlands.

As time went on many Woodies passed into the hands of younger drivers, most notably surfers on the America’s West coast.

Along with the language, clothes, and music, the Woodie Wagon became a part of 1960s California surf culture.

The Woodie’s close association with surfies inspired the lines “I bought a ’34 wagon and we call it a Woodie” in the classic song Surf City by Jan and Dean.

And these iconic vehicles were immortalised by the Beach Boys in their 1963 instrumental Boogie Woodie.

Woodies required their own brand of maintenance, which prompted some people of wit and wisdom to suggest an owner sometimes needed a good carpenter more so than a panelbeater, especially in the event of an accident.

For many of us the Woodies which immediately spring to mind are the Morris Minor Traveller and the Mini Countryman models, great vehicles which we still see from time to time, and which always understandably attract interest.

Colour conundrum

H

enry Ford founder of the Ford Motor Company is said to have stated, “Any customer can have a car painted any colour that he wants, as long as it is black.”

Between 1914 and 1925 the Model T Ford only came in black.

The reason was economics, not style.

Black was the only colour paint that could be dried quickly, and speed was important at the Ford plant because of the enormous number of cars coming off the production line.

Interestingly General Motors did some-

thing similar when they introduced the 1953 Chevrolet Corvette, except they did it in reverse so to speak.

Buyers could have any colour ‘Vette they wanted, as long as it was polo white.

Renaissance time

ew Zealand pricing for the new Land Rover Defender will start from under $90,000 with the first of the new models expected to be delivered here from May 2020 according to its local distributors.

Almost 70 pre-orders have already been placed by customers eager to be one of the first to own the renaissance model – which was last manufactured in 2016.

Jaguar Land Rover NZ general manager Steve Kenchington says the iconic SUV has an exceptionally loyal following in this market.

He says a trend towards customers placing

deposits on new models such as the Defender as soon as they are announced is growing amongst their customer base.

“Customers are learning more about the model online and through conversations with local retailers and have sufficient confidence in the brand to place more than $8 million worth of orders – even before we have announced pricing.

“The early deposits are mainly for product at the top end of the range such as the Defender 110 P400 X, which retails from $164,900 and the 110 P400 SE which starts at $126,900.

“This level of support is testament to the

trust our customers have in the quality of product coming through from Jaguar Land Rover,” he says.

Kenchington says there will be four diesel and four petrol engine versions of the Defender available in this market.

“The diesel engines are all 2-litre with the Defender 110 D200 starting from $89,900 through to the 110 D240 First Edition which is priced from $125,900.

“A lot of initial interest has also been centred on the petrol engines – which are all 3-litre with the exception of the Defender 110 P300 SE which starts at $114,900.”

Medal hunt L otus Engineering and Hope Technology have unveiled their exciting bicycle collaboration – an innovative new track bike designed to deliver medals for the Great Britain Cycling Team at next summer’s Olympic Games.

The new bike will be on public display later this week at London’s Rouleur Classic event and make its competitive debut with the Great Britain Cycling Team this weekend.

Riders have been testing the bike in secret over the past weeks, and will continue their evaluation with a view to riding it at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Lotus Engineering is the internationally recognised automotive consultancy division of Group Lotus, best known globally for its iconic British performance cars.

Its industrial design innovation and expertise has been seen in sectors including aerospace, medical research, furniture and boat-building.

Lotus Engineering has created the unique front fork design and handlebars for the new bike, working with Hope Technology to integrate these components into the overall package.

This has included a full programme of wind tunnel evaluation on both bike and rider, plus testing to maximise the strength while minimising the weight.

Lotus has also worked on improving stiffness and front end feel to improve rider confidence.

Lotus has a highly successful history in cycling through its Lotus Engineering division.

In the nineties, Lotus was instrumental in the design and development of Lotus Sport bikes for cycling legend Chris Boardman at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, where he won gold, and in the 1994 Tour de France, where he won the prologue time trial to take the famous yellow jersey.

Miguel Fragoso, Executive Director, Lotus Engineering, commented: “Lotus has always been at the very cutting edge of lightweight racing performance with its cars, and now – after 25 years away from cycling – we’ve collaborated to apply the same Lotus core values to this new track bike.
