Fresh looks; fresh power plant I n what must be a record for a small SUV, Mitsubishi’s evolution ASX will receive yet another facelift. It will be offered with a new engine as it approaches its tenth year on the local market. The refreshed 2020 Mitsubishi ASX was first seen at its global premiere at the 2019 Geneva motor show in March. Key cosmetic changes include a new nose, which includes a bold satin chrome grille, stacked indicator and fog lights surrounded by more colour-coded body work than before and with more aggressive vertical lines. The headlights are now LEDs while skid plate styling under the front bumper adds a little more ruggedness to the design. At the rear, the 2020 Mitsubishi ASX also gets new LED tail-lights and sharper rearend styling. As the existing 110kW/197Nm 2.0-litre engine continues on entry-level model grades, it’s likely only the top-shelf Exceed will be offered with the 2.4-litre as used in Outlander. The 2.4-litre engine is already offered in ASX in other markets such as the US where it is sold as the Outlander Sport. It develops 124kW of power at 6000rpm, and 220Nm of torque at 4200rpm. The 2.4-litre four-banger will be offered with CVT transmission only, while the 2.0-litre continues with both five-speed manual and optional CVT. As well as a brand new Red Diamond exterior colour, Sunshine Orange and Oak Brown are also added to the existing sev-
en-colour paint palette. The interior has been mostly left alone, with just one key change: a larger touchscreen. The infotainment system screen grows from 7.0- to 8.0-inches and will retain its Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. It will also gain the ability to play videos via USB stick. The ASX remains the top-selling small SUV in Australia, with 13,752 sales to the
end of August, followed by Mazda’s CX-3 with 10,138 units sold. It appears that Mitsubishi is in no rush to replace its popular ASX, with the company’s global boss Ashwani Gupta saying that customers are happy with the existing model. “It is not a question of old and new. “When we look at the ASX sales, nowhere is customers giving us feedback that this model is old.
P U E L Y T S
“In fact, this is becoming more and more an important asset for us, then the question comes to mind, why should we change? “What is the confidence in ourselves to come up with something the customer may not give the same appreciation as before. “But on the other side, we need to keep the freshness in the product, and so that why we will introduce the 2.4-litre engine.”

Show Shine T
he Show and Shine staged by the Originals Motorcycle Club during Wheels Week was a great success. Not surprising really, after all it’s pretty hard to resist looking at some very special bikes and the event was well patronised. Exhibitors enjoyed being
there and the Originals enjoyed organising and running the show. The show provided enjoyment at the time, and just recently it provided more when the Originals got together with the Mid Canterbury Child Cancer Foundation. Another good time during which proceeds
from the Bike Show were donated to the Foundation. The Mid Canterbury Child Cancer Foundation provides much needed practical support for families. Support which is possible because of donations like the one given by the Originals.

Real? Or imagined . . .
F
rom the imitation is the greatest form of flattery files come this. A motoring acquaintance got in touch with us saying not only is China the home to a wall that makes Donald Trump green with envy, it’s also, according to his reserach, a place where knock-off goods are churned out in their millions. Normally when you think of knock-off goods, the first things which spring to mind are name-brand clothing or consumer electronics but it seems that there is literally
nothing off limits when it comes to reproductions – and that includes cars. A couple of examples: Is this a Porsche Cayman on the right? No it’s actually an electric powered Eagle Came. The name doesn’t quite sound the same does it? The motor probably doesn’t either! So you thought this is a Rolls Royce Phantom, well it’s actually the Geely GE. It seems British luxury and craftsmanship doesn’t come with a patent or copyright.
Fast Fords under the hammer
S
ilverstone Auctions sale at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show on November 9 and 10 is set to be a real scorcher, as some of the hottest cars in the most exceptional condition from the Blue Oval are to be auctioned. The term Fast Fords always conjures up great excitement and they have some real head-turners from the 1970s and 80s to get you all fired up. Leading the charge is a 1972 RS1600 Custom Mk1 in a glorious light blue estimated at £58,000 to £68,000. Built at Ford’s AVO
factory with the BDA engine, this 1972 car is in the most exceptional condition and recorded on the RS1600 Register. As one of just 1137 built, the vendor is a collector of rare and immaculate cars from the marque. Another comes from a very well-known and documented collection, the BonkeRS Collection. This 1983 Ford Escort RS1600i is quite possibly one of the best, one of just 560 in Sunburst Red. It was in storage from 2004 to 2010 and has only done 700 miles in the last 16 years. Estimated at £30,000 to £40,000.

entley Motors is introducing a striking Blackline specification for the all-new Flying Spur – the British marque’s driver-focused, four-door model that combines sports sedan agility with modern limousine refinement. The third generation of the world’s most advanced luxury Grand Tourer can now be specified with a range of subtle but distinctive features. Much of the brightwork on the exterior of the car is replaced with Blackline trim, helping to create an even more powerful road presence for the peerless Flying Spur. The exterior brightware incorporated in the Blackline specification includes the iconic Flying B mascot, radiator vanes, matrix grilles, side window surrounds, and lower door and rear bumper blades. The front and rear light bezels, door handles, wing vents and the exhaust outlets also

receive the same distinguished, darkened treatment. Standard fit on the Blackline specification are 21” five tri-spoke alloy wheels, with 22” Mulliner Driving Specification wheels optional. Customers can choose from among 17 standard exterior colours, as well as a further 13 extended range colours at launch. The Blackline specification has already proven extremely popular with customers of the New Continental GT. Since the beginning of the year, up to 30 per cent of all GTs bought, depending on model, have belonged to the Blackline family. The all-new Flying Spur is a ground up development that combines the highest levels of technology and craftsmanship. The world’s finest super-luxury sports sedan has been designed, engineered and handcrafted in Britain during Bentley’s centenary year.

T
he Suzuki V-Strom 1000 has attracted huge fanfare around the world thanks to its comfort, convenience, reliability and enjoyable ride character. The pearl in the V-Strom 1000’s crown is the ever-versatile 1037cm3 90-degree V-twin engine. The rider-friendly nature of the big V-twin provides effortless acceleration, tuned to deliver a thick layer of torque (101Nm) from as low as 4000rpm, meaning you don’t need to rev the engine to the moon or downshift to get going like some of the competitors. The XT Cross-Touring model features wire-spoked wheels and tapered handlebars as standard. The MY19 iteration sports three new colour schemes: Champion Yellow No.2, Pearl Blue/Pearl Glacier White & Glass Sparkle Black. Suzuki’s highly-praised advanced

traction control system proves sometimes simple is better, featuring two modes of assistance; Mode 1 has the least amount of intervention allowing for a certain degree of rear wheelspin to not get in the way of spirited riding. Mode 2 has a higher level of intervention, applied at an instant controlling and preventing the slightest amount of spin, particularly effective in supporting the rider in situations such as rain or on slippery road surfaces. The system can also be turned off altogether, the ECU also remembers the preferred setting from the previous ride saving the need to scroll through countless menus and setting the machine before departing. The Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS) acts as a slipper clutch system when changing down rapidly, while always providing light use at the lever. SCAS is an advanced clutch system supporting both
spirited riding and less fatigue on long rides. Suzuki’s Low RPM assist system has been installed, freeing the rider from unexpected engine stalls. This system will automatically raises the idle speed when engaging the clutch or when riding at low rpms, preventing sudden engine stalling. Braking duties are taken care of by radial mounted four piston mono-block Tokico brake calipers and twin 310mm diameter discs up the front, and a 260mm diameter single disc with a single piston caliper on the rear, providing strong and controllable braking performance. The Bosch ABS Motion Track Brake System employs a 5-Axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), and by combining data regarding the posture of the motorcycle with the front and rear wheel speeds, have made it possible for the ABS to activate not only in a straight line braking but also when the motorcycle is cornering. Also a new feature is the Combination Brake system which automatically activates the rear brake in an effort to stabilise the motorcycle when the front brake pressure rises above a certain threshold. The exterior design further stimulates the spirit of adventure by drawing inspiration from the DR-Z800 raced by Gaston Rahier in the Dakar rally and the production DR-BIG model that followed. The sharp lines and angles promote the bike’s lightweight and manoeuvrable handling performance. Developed through extensive wind-tunnel testing the windscreen is 49mm taller than the previous version for increased rider comfort and protection whilst significantly reducing wind buffering. Three pre-set height options are available, the windscreen is set at its lowest position from standard and can be lifted by either 15mm or 30mm according to rider preference. Suzuki’s ratchet-gear mechanism allows the rider to easily choose from three windscreen
23
angles. No tools are required and the desired position can be achieved by simply pushing the windscreen out by hand, even with riding gloves on. A double stitch seat provides luxurious comfort for both the rider and passenger. The revised shape is now slimmer at the front for increased rider clearance combined with the low seat height making it easier for riders to reach the ground. The sides of the seat provide a high level of grip thanks to using the same materials as from the competition RM-Z motocross range. 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels provide the premium balance, stability and nimbleness to effectively cope with all riding situations. The V-Strom 1000XT features tubeless wire-spoke wheels. Wire-spoked aluminium-alloy rims absorb shock effectively at low speeds to promote friendly handling character. Black-anodized 43mm inverted front forks and a dial-adjustable rear shock help to ensure great road holding and a smooth, comfortable ride even with a passenger and a full complement of luggage. Both front and rear suspension systems are fully adjustable enabling the rider to maximise performance in any situation. The V-Strom 1000XT is built on a slim, twin-spar aluminium-alloy frame, providing a smooth ride, and a sporty riding experience when pushed hard. The chassis has been designed to perform regardless whether it’s fully loaded with luggage and/or pillion or solo. The instruments include an analogue tachometer and a brightness-adjustable LCD speedometer. The LCD readouts include an odometer, the gear position, the coolant and ambient temperatures, dual trip meters, the voltage, the riding range, average fuel consumption, the instantaneous fuel consumption, the traction control mode, a fuel gauge and a clock. A convenient 12V DC outlet is located below the instrument panel and is ideal for powering GPS units or charging mobile devices.

HUMMER
W
G
hen the BMW X7 debuted with its bold, aggressive front fascia, not everyone was a fan of it, but no one guessed that BMW was planning on using a larger version of that same grille on the new 4 Series coupe. After the coupe’s unveiling, suddenly the X7’s face worked with the large SUV’s looks and its bold aesthetic makes for one of the most intimidating luxury SUVs on the road these days. It turns out that it still had the potential to get even bigger and badder, and Lumma design has extracted this extra attitude from the German beast through the use of carbon fibre and fibreglass. Labelled the CLR X7, the kit starts with a front end that puts every other BMW SUV’s nose to shame, and a sinister blacked-out grille.
eneral Motor’s utilitarian brand Hummer started off as a military-exclusive brand, only building enormous V8-powered H1’s for the American Army, but that soon changed. Fast forward a decade or so, and the brand no longer builds those big, iron-clad beasts, but instead builds family-friendly SUVs that somewhat resemble what the brand once was, so it’s really no surprise that it no longer exists. Before the world writes Hummer off as another failed gas-guzzling American brand, it looks like GM wants to give it another lease on life in the form of an electric brand. According to a Reuters report, GM could potentially use the Hummer name on a new range of electric SUVs and trucks that will be assembled at the brand’s Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant. This is part of GM’s tentative with the UAW, so production is scheduled to start in late 2021, but given the current climate in Detroit, that could change at any minute. Not much is known about this next generation of Hummer models, but it is rumoured that they would be positioned as premium vehicles. The project is part of the “BT1 electric truck/SUV program.” Before we jump to the conclusion of Hummer calling their next model the H4, apparently the name is still “under consideration”, but the truck has reportedly been dubbed ‘Project O’. While there hasn’t been any word on the specifics of the truck, it has been revealed that a performance-oriented off-road version would release in 2022, and would become the F-150 Raptor’s direct rival. It seems that GM hasn’t forgotten about Cadillac either, as an electric crossover is set to go on sale under the historic name alongside one from GMC.
Moving down the body, the 50mm fender flares give the front profile some serious depth, and accentuate the massive 24-inch wheels at the front and rear. Wrapped in 355 and 295 rubber, these 13 and 10-inch wheels mean business. For reference, those rear tyres are the same width as the ones found on the Bugatti Chiron. The rest of the exterior modifications include a roof spoiler, a spoiler on the tailgate, and a diffuser. Lumma mentioned that those spoilers aren’t just for looks either, they reportedly reduce lift over the rear axle. Not ones to just adjust the looks of the SUV, Lumma Design have created their very own exhaust system for the SUV. No power gains have been reported from this system, but we can imagine that it would allow for a deeper tone.
