C-HR the RAV4’s little sibling C -HR stands for Coupe – High Rider, despite it having four doors and riding kind of low for a crossover.

Smaller than its corporate sibling the RAV4, it is bigger than the Nissan Juke and should have greater interior room.

The company did a better job with the styling than the name. The bulging fenders, tapered greenhouse, falling roofline, and rising beltline were originally sketched at Toyota’s California design studio and survived almost entirely intact through two concept iterations that were shown in September 2014 and September 2015.

The C-HR is built on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA), a flexible platform that debuted with Toyota’s fourth-generation Prius.

Compared with the one-size-up RAV4, the C-HR is roughly 25cm shorter, 50cm narrower, and 10cm lower.

Yet the C-HR still has a significant size advantage on the Juke.

The Toyota packs an extra 23cm of length and 11cm of wheelbase compared with the Nissan, so it should be better suited to moving passengers and cargo behind the front seats.

Toyota also says it wants the C-HR’s dance moves to match its looks.

Engineers claim it handles like a C-segment hatchback, with less body roll than the common crossover.

The C-HR is offered with a 1.2-litre turbo four-cylinder or a hybrid powertrain that uses a 1.8-litre four-cylinder.

The big little Kias

K

ia Motors has lifted the lid on its future at the 2019 Seoul Motor Show with the unveiling of its SP Signature concept, along with a concept for a new large SUV. The SP Signature builds on an earlier version shown to the public last year and hints at a compact SUV that Kia is expected to launch in New Zealand in late 2019 for the 2020 model year.

As NZ consumer demand continues to swing in favour of compact SUVs the SP Signature concept is Kia’s first foray in the Compact SUV segment and is expected to boost sales in late 2019.

Kia describes the SP Signature as an evolution of last year’s SUV concept, which takes the design much closer to the final production look.

The latest Kia SP Signature concept delivers a bold and stylish appearance, combining “sophisticated beauty, breakthrough technology and high functionality” in a smart, compact package, according to the manufacturer.

With a wide grille and long bonnet at the front, and a rear design that emphasises stability through the wide rear lamps and body lines, Kia says the SP Signature is designed to stand out on the road.

At the front, its lamps are connected to the ‘tiger nose’ grille with integrated daytime running lamps. While its strong shoulder line, with a glasshouse that tapers towards the rear of the car, provides an air of understated sportiness.

The exterior is completed through a series of distinct styling features, contributing to the car’s contemporary, technical design. These include thin LED lamps at the front and rear, sharp lines pressed into the bodywork and precise metallic detailing.

Kia goes on to say the styling of SP Signature is targeted towards younger buyers, adding that the concept’s design will also influence future models destined for Kia’s global markets.

Another eye-catching Kia concept that made its debut at the Seoul Motor Show was the Mohave Masterpiece, representing the company’s vision of a full-size SUV. This rugged and robust vehicle hints at how the brand could adapt its latest designs and features for the large off-road SUV segment, sitting above the current Kia Sorento.

The rugged good looks, purposeful SUV stance and raised body of the Mohave Masterpiece are matched by a powerful allwheel drive system that gives the vehicle true ‘go-anywhere’ capability.

But, unlike the SP Signature, whether this concept will go into production remains to be seen. However, elements from this vehicle and other futuristic technology on show at Seoul are likely to find their way into future Kia models, the company says.

C200 impressive L

et’s start with a little history. It’s over 130 years since Carl Benz unveiled the world’s first automobile, which was followed closely

by Gottlieb Daimler’s motorised

carriage.

Then in 1888 Carl Benz’s wife Bertha, accompanied by their sons Euggen and Richard, made the first long-distance journey (106km) in the 1.8kW Benz three- wheel vehicle. These events were likely reported on in the Ashburton Guardian, which at that time had been publishing newspapers for around nine years.

Jumping forward to 1955 saw my cousin Stu Hart’s father Ron taking delivery of the Mercedes-Benz 180 pictured (left) with the latest C Class.

The 180, which has been owned by Stu for many years now has 200,300 miles (322,350km) on the speedo. Power is from an 1.8 litre, four cylinder engine producing 38kW and 112Nm of torque.

Whereas the C200’s 1.5 litre turbo-petrol four does 135kW at 5800-6100rpm and 280Nm at 3000rpm! What’s more it has a clever EQ Boost 48-volt mild-hybrid system, which not only helps out with fuel efficency, but when necessary contributes an additional 10kW and 160Nm of torque.

The 48-volt battery for its electric motor sits in front of the usual 12-volt unit and also powers the belt driven starter/generator that also provides a seamless stop/start.

Then if you select the Eco driving mode (there’s five), the petrol engine will in some driving situations turn off and you coast along on electric power. There’s regenerative braking as well.

This clever system, which delivers quick accleration, then very quiet, relaxed cruising, gives the impression that there’s a larger engine under the bonnet!

The quoted combined fuel consumption is 6.4L/100km.

Mercedes have made lots of other changes to the C Class range including restyled front and rear ends. We decided that it exudes a definite look of class, but without being in any way ostentatious.

Comments which certainly also apply to the cabin. For the dash with its twin digital displays can be configured in different themes and colours. All of which is easy to

navigate your way around and use.

Especially so with being able to by voice command (“hey Mercedes”) to access/ change many of these functions including the layout and appearance of the speedo, rev-counter, background lighting etc. All of which, as are the ventilation roundels surrounded by smart alloy highlights and soft-touch plastics.

There’s plenty of seat adjustment and space for the driver and passengers in their shapely seats. Initially they do feel rather firm but they soon demonstrate their comfort and support. Heating for the seats is an optional extra.

Those in the back seat found the sloping roofline wasn’t a problem for getting in and out, then commented on the comfort therein. But they did say they wouldn’t welcome a centre passenger, except perhaps for a very short trip.

The boot holds 455 litres of luggage.

I’ve already mentioned the Eco drive mode of the five available. Comfort is the default setting, which with the optional 19in alloys the drive car had (rather than the usual 18in) did feel a tad firm on some of our more testing suburban roads, but then was fine on the open road.

Of course choose either Sport or Sport+ and the C200 with its light yet positive steering, and excellent brakes on a twisty hilly back road has the ability to put a smile on your face!

I have also driven the C220d (from $75,400) with its new-generation 2.0-litre turbo-diesel which delivers 143kW and 400Nm. Like the C200 it’s very quiet to ride in and impressively frugal with a stated 4.7L/100km fuel consumption. For both models there are many optional packages available although these don’t include one with active cruise control.

Could these cars stop superbugs?

T

he car of the future could help win the battle against superbugs – according to Jaguar Land Rover.

Future models could help stop the spread of colds and flu thanks to innovative ultraviolet light technology (UV-C) borrowed from the medical industry, where it has been used for more than 70 years.

By integrating UV-C, Jaguar Land Rover believes it could help to stop bacteria and harmful viruses, known as pathogens, from surviving in the cabin.

UV-C is currently widely used for disinfecting water, filtering air and sterilising surfaces by utilising wavelengths of light between 200 to 280 nanometres.

Exposing pathogens to UV-C within the air-conditioning system breaks down the molecular structure of the DNA, neutralising

them. Clean air is then released into the cabin. The technology could even help in the fight against drug-resistant superbugs.

Jaguar Land Rover is exploring UV-C technology as part of its vision to create a tranquil sanctuary inside each of its luxury vehicles.

The manufacturer is piloting a wide range of driver and passenger wellbeing features, as it looks towards a self-driving future.

Dr Steve Iley, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Medical Officer, said: “The average motorist spends as much as 300 hours per year behind the wheel. There is a clear opportunity to better utilise cars for administering preventative healthcare.”

“The implementation of individual wellbeing measures as part of our ‘tranquil sanctuary’ research promises to not only improve quality of life for our

customers but in this case, offers clear advantages in reducing pathogen spread – protecting the overall population from the threat of disease; particularly as we move towards shared mobility solutions.”

Steve Kenchington, Jaguar Land Rover’s New Zealand general manager says the company is looking beyond the use of vehicles as simply a mode of transportation.

“The research programme under way will investigate how the car is evolving to become more of a ‘shared space’ and where this fits into our future needs.

“Whether this evolution creates more communication, environmental, entertainment, technological or healthcare based challenges, we will see more innovation released over the coming years which will enrich the simple experience of driving and develop

solutions for a wide range of issues that we will encounter each day,” he says.

Jaguar Land Rover is already actively seeking to neutralise pathogens in its latest generation Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, available across the range including the all-electric Jaguar I-PACE and Range Rover Sport.

The current Four-zone Climate Control and Cabin Air Ionisation system works by using high voltage to create trillions of nano-sized negatively charged particles (ions) coated in water molecules. These ions deactivate pathogens, forming larger particles which are removed from the air as they are brought back into the filter. As well as combatting pathogens, the ions also act upon odour molecules and allergens in a similar way.
