Interesting facts about the real estate business Since the introduction of the Real Estate Agents Act 2008, there has been a significant clarification of terms we use in the industry. An Agency is the office, and an agent is the owner and that the owner has the qualification diploma in real estate.

A licensee is the sales person. They work under the “house” of the agent. The sales person has the “agency” for the vendor but also has obligations to the purchaser.

Sales people and of course the agent are required to work within the law which is set out in the Real Estate Agents’ Act 2008. There is also The Professional Conduct and Client Care Practice Rules (the Code of Conduct) that sets the minimum standards for New Zealand’s real estate agents which has recently changed.

(The Code of Conduct 2012 came into effect on April 8 2013) Here are some facts straight out of the code you may need to know for your next real estate transaction.

Plant now for strawberries Even though this winter has been pretty mild, it still seems odd to be thinking about such a summery fruit as strawberries just yet. But if you want to enjoy the fruits of your labour at Christmas now is the time to plant strawberries.

I love the fact strawberries will grow just about anywhere. Google strawberry planters and you will find an array of creative places for growing this tasty fruit.

Cut off drain pipes, wooden pyramids, garden beds, pots, the list goes on.

I like to grow strawberries in a raised garden bed. But I’m also a fan of planting them in a paradise planter or hanging basket. As long as they can see the sun, and where you’re planting is well-drained, you can expect healthy-growing plants that produce lots of fruit.

Place netting or wire over your plants when they begin to produce fruit. This will block out birds and ensure you get to eat the strawberries yourself.

Before planting in the garden raise your bed by mounding the soil. This will encourage circulation, drainage and can add depth to shallow soil.

In spring, add another dose of general fertiliser to your strawberries to encourage sturdier plants that are more disease resistant heading in to the warmer months.

Plant your seedlings around the edges of your garden or pots to encourage the strawberries to hang over the sides and prevent the fruit from touching the ground

Come Christmas you’ll have more strawberries than you’ll know what to do with and the cold weather of winter (I hope!) will be a distant memory.

Extending your living space Patio or deck?

Attractive courtyard and verandah settings bring a whole new dimension to your home by extending its indoor living space.

There are many things to consider as you weigh up whether to install a patio or deck. Both can look fantastic, it just comes down to what you want from your outdoor space. Every good plan starts with a vision.

Patios Patios are at an even level with the ground, and as they merge into a lawn or garden, a connection is created between the interior living space and the outdoor landscape. The surrounding garden

becomes a key visual part of the area. A paver, tile, brick or concrete finish lends itself to the incorporation of other hard landscaping features such as birdbaths, fire pits, outdoor ovens, birdbaths and water features. Level ground with a good consistency beneath it is required. If you choose to install your own patio, take time to dig the area out and compact the base.

This will ensure a beautiful patio area for years to come. Around a swimming pool, a concrete base may be required, and sealing the pavers will stop staining.

We love cushions There is so much to love about cushions.

They bring a practical element to your home, by making the couches, chairs and beds they rest on just that much more comfortable. And they can look as good as they feel. But how to choose the right ones? There is a lot to consider.

Size Small pillows will look out of place on a large couch, unless they are positioned as part of an arrangement with larger pillows. September 25 Boulevard Day For over 35 years Mid Canterbury’s Long-standing fun day is on again, with a great variety of stalls, local retailers, and small unique businesses operating in the Mid Canterbury area and others coming from all around New Zealand.

Once again this year the theme is hats (protecting you from the strong UV in mid-Canterbury) and we will have a prize for the best stall holder, retailer and visitor dressed for the day.
