The three pretty Ps I write this, I won’t list them all! But it’s fair to say we have a pansy colour or pattern for everyone.

Now I’ve convinced you of the benefits of growing one or more of these pretty plants, you need to work out where to grow them. All three grow really well in hanging baskets and pots. This is good if you like to move the colour around your home or garden. If you do decide to pot your plants, be sure to use a good potting mix. Burn smoke-free this winter With the arrival of cooler weather, Canterbury’s winter air quality becomes a hot topic. The main contributor to this problem is still smoke coming from domestic wood burners – as much as 93 per cent in Ashburton.

Plenty of dry kindling is key to a cosy smoke-free fire. Start with scrunched up newspaper, a few knots of newspaper, a small stack of 8 to 10 pieces of kindling and 2 small logs.

Ashburton wood burner users have done much to improve their burning techniques, with only two high pollution nights (where PM10 emissions exceeded health-based guidelines set by the Ministry for the Environment) last winter and one the year before. There have already been three high pollution nights this winter. However, on each occasion the PM10 concentrations were only slightly above the health-based guidelines of 50g/m3 – 52 on June 3 and 57 on May 26.

Set the air flow to high and light the fire. As soon as the wood is well alight close the door. After about 5 minutes the wood should form a bricking pattern.

“This shows that wood burner users only have to make a slight change to their burning technique so there is no visible smoke after the initial 15 minutes startup,” says Katherine Trought, Environment Canterbury’s Director, Air Quality. “The secret to a hotter, smoke-free fire is to use lots of dry kindling, make sure you only use dry logs to build the fire, and only turn the airflow down after the first 15 minutes. The firebox will then be very hot with a deep bed of embers, meaning less wood is needed to keep cosy for the rest of the night,” she says.

Add small logs and after another 5 to 10 minutes go outside and check the chimney. It shouldn’t be smoking. Add bigger logs and after 15 minutes you can turn the airflow down. The firebox will now be very hot with a deep bed of embers so you won’t need to use as much wood to keep cosy for the night. Every time you reload, turn the airflow to high for 15 minutes before turning it down again.

“When reloading the wood, turn the airflow to high for 15 minutes then turn it down again. This also applies if reloading before going to bed. “Everybody agrees both cleaner air and warm homes are important and our winter air programmes have helped the community improve air quality in their town, while ensuring people who need help can get it.” Currently, Environment Canterbury is promoting the October 31 deadline for people to replace their older style wood burner with a low emission model to get a consent from their local council. If they do not meet this deadline, their only option may be to get an ultra-low emission model. “We want people to be warm this winter and have clean air to breathe so financial support and special consideration is available for those who need it. Low income households needing financial assistance

to replace their older-style wood burner could well qualify for some of the grants available. These are advertised on our website. Several hundred people have already taken up the financial assistance offer to change to cleaner heating technol-

ogies and add insulation to their homes.” In South Canterbury last winter, Environment Canterbury carried out more than 30 heating assessments and funding was approved to upgrade more than 60 home heating appliances.
