Why borrow?

Why do people borrow money? When we know, it is cheaper to save and pay for an item, whether it is a house, car, boat or household item.

We would have a whole new economy and the risk of setting up a business, wouldn’t have business owners having to risk their homes, if the business wasn’t successful. People would buy what they could afford to pay for when they had the cash, there would be no hire purchase.

Rural update The holiday season has been and gone as well as the madness that goes with it.

Most farmers are frantically harvesting crops and making silage on the back of the exceptional growing season we have had.

The Bayley’s Rural Team locally has seen some exceptional sales across all classes of land during the spring of 2016 and into the summer of 2017 with Mid Canterbury coming through the downturn seemingly unscathed in regards to land values. With all farm transactions selling at very good levels and some even exceeding our expectations! However buyers continue to be very careful doing their due diligence, perhaps more vigorously than usual to make sure the farming business is one that will be viable and profitable. More specifically we are seeing potential purchasers looking very closely into water allocations and costs associated, as well as the nutrient allocations on the farm and whether that property suits their business model.

These seem to have become the two biggest factors when doing a due diligence investigation on a property and from what we have seen have been the biggest points of value differentiation for land. Demand for land with cheap and reliable water from either one of the local schemes or sound ground water consent continues to be the most highly

George Morris sought after. We also continue to field a lot of enquiry on good cropping land (heavy soils) both dry land and irrigated and there have been some very hotly contested sales which has in turn left a lot of unsatisfied buyers in the market.

The lifestyle market remains strong with people wanting to move out of town and onto their lifestyle dream. We are finding that the highest demand for lifestyle properties are the blocks are within the $450k to $650k range and some have sold within days of reaching the market.

All in all Mid Canterbury remains a strong and robust market and still highly desirable in the eyes of a potential property buyer.

Awapuni Nurseries If you’re a fan of the cottage garden style of gardening, you can’t look past love in a mist. It has been commonly grown in cottage gardens for over 100 years and is perfect for creating the informal and charming style that makes this look so popular.

Use it to fill in gaps or to create mass beddings of pretty, and delightful blue flowers. Team it up with other complementary flowers like hollyhock, Canterbury bells, cosmos and sweet william or try growing our cottage garden mix which also includes plants like those I’ve just listed.

You can order love in a mist (technically known as nigella) from our online store at www.awapuni.co.nz or pick up a bundle or two of plants next time you’re at one of our local stockists.

Next you need to find a sunny and dry spot (preferably with free-draining soil) to plant. If you have roses, you could grow some love in a mist amongst these. They both like the same conditions so grow well next to each other.

Dig a small hole and plant each seedling around 15cm apart from the next. The trick is to plant each seedling far enough away to allow room to grow without the plants being too spread apart so you end up with gaps.

Each seedling will grow to around 40cm high and start flowering around six weeks after planted. To extend the flowering season, I suggest dead-heading (taking off any dead flower heads) and planting another round of seedlings a few weeks later. Or let the flowers go to seed (the seed heads are also very attractive) and they’ll regrow next season.
