After leaving French Farm in 2014, downsizing to a much smaller garden was going to present a challenge. Firstly removing two large Phoenix Palms & countless seedling trees/shrubs. Then a major renovation & addition to the 1950’s house & Nancy started laying out her new garden. Rules we set were: no lawns, LYTTELTON no hedges & no prickly roses! We have broken some of these already!

“A garden is a lovely place to sit in the shade and admire. Mine wasn’t made by gazing, just hard work never ending, giving me joy each season. Oh so rewarding” - Margaret Chaney 1985. Akaroa FyrneBrooke House is tucked away in a beautiful garden filled with old world & modern Roses, Rhododendrons, ornamental & native trees & a private walking track meandering through the native bush all nestled between Balguerie Stream & native bush. The garden was designed & planted by Margaret (Ma) Chaney and has wonderful wee nooks, hidden delights & tranquil seating areas, all with varying views of the Peninsula hills, native bush & Akaroa. Please park on Rue Balguerie close to Saint Peters Church and walk up the side lane to the property.

The Kearney Rhodes House is so named from the first two women who owned the home. Anne Kearney, an Irish widow with 5 adult children built it in 1867 and May Rhodes used it in the 1930’s as a ‘maternity home’. Purchased to save in 2010 by Stephen Cashmore, Architectural and Interior Designer, the house has undergone a mixture of conservation, restoration and adaption to give new life to a place with much social significance to Akaroa. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see inside this historic property and view the restoration work.
