Lines drawn over market day

Key Ashburton retailers are op posed to a new CBD market day, saying further “restricted trad ing’’ is not what they need.

The proposed Ashburton Mar ket Day would replace the now defunct Boulevard Day, but the application from organiser Carol Johns would mean the tempo rary closure of East Street, Bur nett Street, and Tancred Street on Monday, September 26.

Her proposal has received three objections, which would now go before the Ashburton District Council, with Johns to front to morrow’s hearing.

Ashburton Paper Plus owner Terry McNabb said he doesn’t have a problem with a market day, but “I do have a problem with holding it on the street”.

“For a few years now, we have had these days where the roads in the CBD get closed off, but all we are doing is inviting out-of-town stallholders to park up outside our doors for the day.

“That does not help any of the locally owned and operated busi nesses in that area.”

McNabb said his business has had nothing but disruption for two years from Covid, the CBD redevelopment, and now a new demolition next door.

He said he operated two es sential service businesses inside Paper Plus, those being NZ Post and AA Driver & Vehicle Licens ing, which served a lot of elderly customers whose access would be impacted.

Bob McDonald, from Health 2000 in the Arcade, has submit ted an objection on behalf of 15 CBD businesses that, like Mc Nabb, “believe another day with restricted trading is not benefi cial for the CBD”.

Because of the CBD’s new one-

way system, McDonald said clos ing East Street would “effectively shut down the whole CBD”.

Boulevard Day, which was una ble to be held in 2020 because of Covid-19 restrictions.

It then had to be held at the Ashburton Domain last year due

to the CBD being a construction zone, which was the first time in 45 years it was held outside of the inner-city location.

He and Cooper hoped to find someone new to take over the running of the Boulevard Day this year, but that hasn’t happened.

That’s why Johns, who has pre viously run events on the same day as Boulevard Day and who is standing for a seat on the council in the local election, has stepped up to fill the void.

Her Ashburton Market Day proposal now falls to the council, with the hearing taking place at 9am on Wednesday.

South Canterbury Anniversary Day has traditionally seen Ashburton’s East Street packed with stalls, but with Boulevard Day moving to the Ashburton Domain last year and not going ahead at all this year, a replacement market faces objections.

A Ukrainian living in Ashburton feels “sad’’ at not being able to fight Russian invaders with his brother in the ongoing murder ous war.

He’s Oleksandr Kholiavka, 39, a proud Ukrainian, who has been living in Ashburton for the past four years, having first moved to New Zealand eight years ago.

Kholiavka continually fears for his brother as the body-mount ing and city-destroying Russian invasion of Ukraine shows no sign of letting up, having started in February.

His father in Ukraine tries to keep in contact with his solider brother, with Kholiavka having been told his sibling was “still fighting and still alive’’.

Kholiavka has lost no fami ly members in the fighting, but relations’ homes have been de stroyed, and he feels helpless stuck in Ashburton.

“I feel not good because I can’t help him,’’ he said in his slightly broken English.

“I really want to fly back to Ukraine, but my partner say I am not allowed because I have two kids here in New Zealand. I have family here.

“My heart is in my country. I really want to help.’’

That help was obvious in a small way on Saturday when Kholiavka and his Ukrainian partner Anna Keit manned a sausage sizzle outside Mitre 10 in Ashburton.

A Ukrainian flag fluttered high above the sizzle hut and Keit was even dressed in a traditional red and white embroidered top.

with proceeds to be sent to the Ukraine to help civilians and soldiers buy artillery earmuffs when operating guns and can nons.

“They need special protec

tion gear with the artillery (they use).’’

“I am sad, yes, because every day I can see how many civil (sic) people die,’’ he said.

“It makes me angry.

“Because Russia told us they would not fight with civils and only fight with Ukraine soldiers. But they are mostly fighting civil people.

“They are trying to kill all Ukraine nationals.’’

Though Russia has an abun dance of military resources, and a president in Vladimir Putin who seemed unlikely to with draw his troops from what he called a “special military op eration”, Kholiavka remained convinced his Ukraine would triumph.

“It will go only one way. We will win,’’ he said, emphasising the fearless and determined attitude shown by all Ukrainians towards the Russian invaders, as seen on daily international news reports.

Foodbank supermarket coming

“There has definitely been weeks where that has been very much evident. The needs have been very different this year with a lot more one-off people coming in,” Elizabeth said.

A brand new supermarket is set to open in Ashburton, but it’s a foodbank one aimed at those in need.

Old office space at the Salvation Army’s citadel on Cass Street would be converted to an open plan supermarket.

That will be possible thanks to a $30,000 grant from the Community Trust Mid and South Canterbury.

Ashburton Salvation Army lieutenants Semi Ratu and Elizabeth Walker-Ratu were really happy to receive the grant, which will see a supermarket model used for a foodbank.

But tokens instead of money would be used for securing grocery items.

The number of tokens given out would vary based on the individual’s needs.

The new model will give some independence back to the people in need, and will allow them to choose the items they wanted.

“It gives them the mana (free-

dom) that they can do their own shopping,” Semi said.

Currently on an average week the Salvation Army prepares 15 food parcels, with busier weeks

being upwards of 25 food parcels. Elizabeth agreed that cost of living increases had affected how people are using the service, with people coming in for a one-off

Because of more one-off clientele the supermarket model will allow the Salvation Army to cater better to people’s individual needs instead of delivering a one-size-fits-all parcel.

The new model will give the choice back to the person needing the parcel, and allow them to choose the food they are comfortable with and will use, instead of getting items they don’t want.

It will also allow the Salvation Army to better track the most popular items.

“We always get people asking us what we need and we usually say everything, but now we will be able to track what is popular and what is not,” Elizabeth said.

The new space is set to be completed in the coming months. with the hope that it will be up and running for the Christmas rush.

McKendry leaves board in good position

Phil McKendry has passed on the mantle after almost two decades in the EA Networks boardroom.

McKendry says he leaves behind “possibly the best little network in the country” after 18 years on the board of directors, including four years as chairman.

At the EA Networks AGM last week he stepped down, with Andrew Barlass appointed as the new chairman.

McKendry said with a new chief executive in Roger Sutton and a lot of talented and capable people at the table he knew it was time to walk away.

“The company was in a really good place and I could walk away knowing things were going well and it has a very exciting future ahead,” McKendry said.

“The local community can be proud of where the company is at now and we see a lot of opportunity in the future to become really efficient and add a lot of value back to the community”

McKendry will view that progress from the sidelines having retired from the boardroom to fully focus on running the

farm in Lyndhurst.

With Barlass as chair, the board is made up of Richard Fitzgerald, Paul Munro, Janine Holland, Anthony Gray, and new appointee Cole Groves.

Barlass is a senior finance industry professional who currently oversees a large dairy farming business in Methven.

He is also a director on Ashburton Contracting Limited – which is 100 per cent owned by the Ashburton District Council, the Ruralco board of directors last year, and is a director on the Christchurch airport board.

The council is the majority shareholder of Electricity Ashburton Limited, which trades as EA Networks, with 28,750,000 of the 30,069,100 shares.

Mid Cantabrians hoping for love at first sight in nightclubs and bars can rest easy. It’ll still be possible.

That’s because our drinking and entertainment establishments have no plans to follow the move by a popular Sydney nightclub, which is banning staring at a stranger from across the dancefloor or bar without verbal consent.

The controversial decision hopes to promote a culture of consent, with anyone found to be giving unwanted attention to a stranger likely to be ejected from the venue.

Safety officers, donning pink vests, would roam the venue to enforce the new banning rule, which, locally, seems unlikely to catch on.

Methven’s Blue Pub manager, Casey Crawford, doesn’t believe a staring ban would catch on in New Zealand anytime soon, but thinks the decision across the ditch could also have something to do with being in a post-Covid world.

Crawford believed because people have not had much social interaction over Covid lockdowns and restrictions they may be more anxious and less trusting of others in social situations.

“We want people to go out, but now we have the added social pressures because people have been in lockdown.”

The Blue Pub hosts live bands and DJs regularly, but they also provide security if anyone felt threatened or unsafe.

“... so, the option is always there for people to get help,” said Crawford, who wondered if there was such a thing as love at first sight these days anyway.

Ash Hills’ (previously Arcadia) nightclub owner, Lakh Winder, wouldn’t want to see the Sydney nightclub staring ban catching on at their Tancred Street premises or anywhere, believing if both

people liked one another then there shouldn’t be a problem.

Ashburton Guardian Facebook follower, Reiner Jess, also gave a rather big thumbs down to the staring ban. She pointed out that her life may well have been completely different if she had not been allowed to stare at a certain guy some years ago.

One person was airlifted to hospital after a serious two car crash on Sunday evening. First responders attended the crash at the intersection of Milton Rd South and Wakanui Rd in Elgin at 5.45pm. Three ambulances and one helicopter responded along with fire crews from Ashburton who extracted the person that was airlifted. “A patient in a moderate condition was transported to Ashburton Hospital by road ambulance and a patient in a serious condition was transported to Christchurch Hospital by air ambulance. No transport was required for the patient in a minor condition,” a St John spokesperson said. A police spokesperson said both vehicles were towed from the scene and an investigation into the circumstances of the crash remains ongoing.

Verrall visiting

Amendment Bill which is in select committee. The bill limits the number of New Zealand retailers able to sell tobacco products and aims to prevent young people taking up smoking. Dr Verrall will hold a question and answer session following her address.

Earth turning

A karakia or blessing which preceded the start of construction of Ashburton College’s stage one classroom block was delivered by Te Reo Maori teacher, Tiipene Philip. Initially the blessing was to be delivered by kaumatua, Te Wera King, but he was unavailable at the last minute. Philip blessed the ground where sods were ceremonially turned and led a waiata.

What’s caught my eye this week . . .

There is certainly a buzz in town about Kmart opening and it would appear most people are looking forward to its arrival.

However some I have talked to are not so positive though.

One mate of mine said “The first thing they should install is a huge skippy bin just outside the front door, so you can dump the crap you bought a year ago before you head inside and purchase some more crap you’ll dump in a year’s time”.

I guess it is part of the throwaway world we live in these days. It does have its pluses though, especially when you are buying clothes and shoes for growing kids.

Some people are worried about it dragging people away from a CBD, they are worried not only about our retailers there, but also the money spent on the revitalisation.

I think if Kmart stops people from heading an hour north to do their shopping then that’s a good thing for this town and here’s hoping if a shopper can’t find what they’re after at Kmart they

head to the CBD for a look there.

I was horrified to watch a school principal on the telly talking about some of the shocking driving habits that have crept into parents’ pick-up and drop-off routines.

Especially the jaw- dropping revelations that some drivers are texting while pulling up to the school gate. If I was a principal that witnessed that, I’m not sure I would be able to stop myself, (a) giving the driver a mouth full and (b) grabbing the phone and smashing it on the road.

It’s really easy to stop.

I made a promise to myself NEVER to look at the phone when I’m driving, and if you can’t keep to a promise to yourself, then

who will you keep it to?

Maybe this could help my cause, some more compelling evidence that we need to spend less time on our phones. Too much blue light from gadgets like laptops and smartphones can accelerate the ageing process, a new study warns. Researchers found that the light could also lead to the onset of obesity and issues with depression.

So, if you had a look in the mirror this morning and thought jeez who’s that old bugger, put your phone down more. And now that you have some spare time on your hands, you may want to go to church.

People who go to church

are more likely to have a very satisfying sex life. Researchers in the United Kingdom found that strongly religious individuals are typically more content with their bedroom activities than those who are not religious.

For the record yelling out “oh God” doesn’t make you religious.

Geering a man of the people

Geoff Geering’s daughters reflected on a civic leader who gave his working life to serving the Mid Canterbury community.

Geoff Geering, former borough councillor and mayor, died on July 23 aged 90.

For more than 20 years he served as borough councillor, mayor, chair of the Ashburton Councils’ Amalgamation Transition Committee and then became first mayor of the newly formed Ashburton District in 1989.

On four occasions he was re-elected mayor unopposed, which confirms both his popularity and achievements.

Yet despite being on nearly 20 organisations over many decades, he didn’t seek the limelight.

“He didn’t chase positive acclaim despite the recognition he received,” daughters, Philippa MacGregor and Susan Maddison, said.

“He enjoyed being in the background yet was always recognised when he was out in public.”

Philippa said her dad was so involved in local organisations that many people came to know him.

“People would come up to him at the supermarket and greet him,” Susan recalled.

In paying tribute to their father, they remembered he was there for them. While active in the community, he found time for his family.

“He wasn’t home a lot and attended numerous meetings in a day, but he would come and support our sporting activities,” they said.

Their sister, Joanne Geering, now living in Australia, used to ride horses in show jumping and dressage and both parents, Geoff and Agnes, would offer their support, her sisters said.

“He didn’t bring his council work home, instead he enjoyed talking about family and his early years growing up,” Philippa said.

Their major recollection was of a man who dedicated his life to Mid Canterbury.

“He had an ongoing interest in Ashburton until much later in life,” Susan said. “Dad had numerous meetings in a day. He

was hard working and a handson mayor.”

As an individual he was passionate and sensitive about the council’s image. In later life he mellowed, chilled, and was easy going they said.

“The phone would ring 24/7 and he was always an accessible and patient man when people rang,” Philippa said.

“He was very dedicated to Ashburton and its life. Both mum and dad were regulars at rest homes and Ashburton Hospital. Many regarded him as the best mayor ever.”

Geoff liked animals and his family remembers him enjoying cats, dogs and ponies. The family also had chooks and pet lambs.

“Dad had racehorses and was in partnership with Joanne and friends. When he won, there was real excitement. It was a lot like winning Lotto,” they said.

In his early life Geoff was a representative cricketer and, with his height, could send down some fast deliveries. Later in life he captained the mayor’s XI

against Rodney Bryant’s All Stars. In the games at the Domain Oval his action was said to resemble a windmill on steroids, but he knew how to get batsmen out.

Geoff Geering owned the Shell Garage in Tinwald and, as a young businessman, was attracted to local government.

He was first elected a borough councillor in 1971 retiring at the end of the first term. He returned in 1977 successfully standing for the mayoralty, a position he held until his retirement in 1995.

Such was his reputation as mayor that he was involved in many local, regional and national organisations including Local Government New Zealand, National Roads Board, Aorangi Regional Development Council, Lottery Commission and the Regional Land Transport Board.

Locally, he served on the Tinwald School Committee, Ashburton College Board of Governors, the Civic Music Council, the Aged Persons Welfare Council, K88 Plains Museum and the Palliative Care Charitable Trust.

He became an active lily grower and was appointed to the NZ Lily Society.

New tool aims to find true costs

Being able to allocate a share of all those ‘other’ costs (approximately $1300 per hec tare) to an otherwise simple gross-margin assessment was a lightbulb moment for McCaw.

Mid Canterbury arable farmers must un derstand their ‘true cost’ of production to ensure continued financial viability – and Federated Farmers has a new spreadsheet designed to do exactly that.

The cost of production spreadsheet of fers growers a unique tool with which to analyse all relevant costs associated with growing ryegrass and white clover seed crops and running the farm.

It even allows for a return on investment.

Its release coincides with a recent Foun dation for Arable Research (FAR) gross margin analysis for ryegrass seed produc tion.

That analysis showed a break-even re sult on seed production but a profit from associated lamb trading.

“Herbage seed production is a risky business. Farmers deserve better than break even” said Methven-based Federat ed Farmers herbage seed chair John Mc Caw.

While the Federated Farmers spread sheet included lamb grazing income, Mc Caw conceded that not all arable farmers were willing or able to trade lambs.

“I’ve been doing gross margins on our farm for 20 years, thinking I understood our cost of production. I wish I’d had this tool earlier – I think we would be farming very differently now if we had.”

McCaw suspected that the plant breed ers’ focus on herbage production had come at the cost of seed yield.

Later heading varieties often yielded less seed and required additional water and fungicides.

Yield gains had plateaued while grower prices had languished.

“It’s been happening over many years, but now production costs have risen steeply, and we have a ‘cost of living crisis’ in the herbage seed industry.”

The extent to which prices must increase to return growers to profit is of concern to both growers and merchants. A reset is needed, not just an inflation adjustment.

“Having ryegrass in the system facilitates lamb grazing, but this should not be used to justify a lower seed price to growers.”

While gross margins have their place, McCaw was concerned they would not be the right tool in this instance.

“Grazing lambs requires capital, labour, and infrastructure quite separate to that of seed production.

Government agencies were given a first-hand look at what it takes to grow arable crops and prepare them for export during a Mid Canterbury farm tour organised by the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR).

Representatives from the Ministry for Primary Industries, Environment Canterbury and Fire and Emergency NZ visited the Dromore farm of Brian and Rachel Leadley, as well as touring Luisetti Seeds in Ashburton which has the largest ryegrass seed dressing plant in the southern hemisphere.

FAR chief executive Alison Stewart said the organisation was being proactive in lifting the profile of the arable industry to the general public, government agencies, and other agricultural sectors that didn’t realise the complexities of an arable system.

Brian Leadley told the group that Bradley Fields is an owner-operator, family farming business. The operation had developed from irrigated mixed cropping and breeding ewes to intensive cropping and store lamb finishing.

Over time there had been major changes in the cropping rotations

with increased focus on small and specialty seed production.

About a third of the cropping rotation was cereals, mostly milling wheat and some barley, and a third in ryegrass, made up of hybrids and Italian grass rather than perennials.

The remaining third was planted in processed peas and sweetcorn for the neighbouring Talley’s plant, as well as seed crops including clover, mustard, and evening primrose.

Record keeping was crucial, to understand paddock history and crop isolation issues.

About 3000 to 5000 lambs are bought in after harvest for finishing, with another 1500 lambs grazed for other farmers. While

lambs are an important part of the operation, cropping takes priority in decision making, Leadley said.

The group also visited Luisetti Seeds, which installed a hightech German-made seed dressing plant, the first of its kind in New Zealand, ready for the 2021 harvest.

The company, which was started by Vince Luisetti in Rangiora in 1932, has grown to be an internationally significant supplier of grass seed, pulses, and cereals to 28 countries.

Taking part in trials for the Hill Country Futures Partnership Programme has already been valuable for Matt Iremonger, general manager of Willesden Farm on Banks Peninsula.

“We have had some early results from the experiments on the development we have done on our hills and total dry matter and it was very interesting,” he said.

The Hill Country Futures Partnership programme is a five-year programme co-funded by Beef + Lamb New Zealand, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, PGG Wrightson Seeds and Seed Force New Zealand.

It incorporates traditional science research, farmer knowledge, social research, and citizen science and has a strong emphasis on forages and providing decision-making tools to help farmers select the best forage option for different land management units.

Willesden Farm is a 5500 hectare sheep and beef property. About 1200 hectares is flat and cultivatable while the remainder is mostly moderate to steep hill country.

Two projects within the Hill

Country Future Partnership programme are under way on the farm. One measures pasture growth at two locations, one an improved area with lucerne and the other an unimproved pasture of mainly weed grasses with a little ryegrass and white clover.

The other project is mapping micro-indicators, such as soil temperature and moisture, in the hill country landscapes.

“I think the challenges for hill country farmers are the same as they are for farmers whatever the land type in that there is an increasing focus on more efficient use of the resources we have and the need to use all inputs, fertiliser, chemicals and feed more efficiently,” Iremonger said.

“However, it is not easy for us hill country farmers to show how efficient we are because of the topography and difficulty of measuring.

The pasture measurements at Willesden Farm are being taken at two altitudes, 20 and 175 metres above sea level. At each altitude, there are paired enclosure cages on improved and unimproved pasture.

“As techniques of capturing data and information become more readily available, that will help to develop skill sets and information and data sets and support the ability to measure ourselves around best practice and returns on investment,” Iremonger said.

Playground plan needs big ideas

Controversial suggestions that Ashburton Domain’s popular playground may be rebuilt to become a modern, safer facility reminded me of a joke that perhaps captures the sentiments of many.

It goes like this: Why couldn’t Superman use the local play ground as a kid? Because adult supervision was required.

The tongue in cheek sugges tion being that Superman, he of incredible strength and near in vincibility, risked injuring himself on playground equipment of all things without guardians to keep him safe.

Ridiculous? Yep, you know it. Unless, of course, the playground equipment was made of krypton ite, that fictional substance that had detrimental effects on Super man and his powers.

Anyway, enough of the Dad jokes and back to our domain playground issue, which has fired

up many in the community.

Overwhelmingly, the public have rubbished a suggestion made by a national playground compliance team that a possible rebuild may be needed because of what has been described as an adhoc design, a reference to its disjointed creation with various equipment and apparatus added over time.

Concerns were also raised about the potentially unsafe and restrictive raised wooden edges and the use of bark chip mulch as a landing platform.

Now, two things immediately come to mind about the report suggestion.

Firstly, let’s be clear that all play grounds should be a safe place for children to enjoy and that’s regardless of one’s level of bravery, strength or limitations.

Playgrounds should also be inclusive and accessible to every one and that includes those with disabilities, who otherwise have to visit facilities specially designed for their needs or just sit longingly on the sidelines while other chil dren played.

Clearly, the Ashburton Domain playground has a major access problem because of the raised wooden edges. It’s not equipped to accommodate children who use wheelchairs and other mobility aids, or even some elderly folk attending to keep an eye on offspring.

The use of wood chips and mulch on the ground also makes it near impossible for those mobili ty-restricted among us, while the need for a soft-surface ground and

flooring to move across and to soften blows from falls is essential.

So, improving access should be an easy fix and the council’s com munity services group manager, Steve Fabish, has suggested that in a roundabout sort of way. He’s said that removing the raised wooden edges would happen “when and where possible and in conjunction with other site works”.

Apart from improving accessi bility and ensuring an inclusive and safe playground for children, there’s a far bigger opportunity here that the council and the com munity should consider.

Why not create a genuine tourist attraction playground, a destination facility to match the mightily impressive multimil lion-dollar Margaret Mahy venue in Christchurch? Imagine having a playground that also included a modern bike park, a small BMX track, and quality skate park?

Interestingly, Invercargill may

oral candidate Marcus Lush, the broadcaster-turned-local body politician, said he wants to build New Zealand’s “biggest and best” playground in the city in the next three years. And, he believed, ex ternal funding could be pulled together to achieve it. So why should Ashburton follow that same line of thinking? Because in many ways playgrounds serve, quite literally, as a town’s lungs. It gives residents a breathing space and its young er population an opportunity to grow in a healthy way. Yes, a new playground of that sort of scale would come with a sizeable price tag, but surely it would be money well spent.

We bet the price tag would be irrelevant once we saw the smiles on children’s faces as they played.

There’s an opportunity here Ashburton to create something special. Are we brave and innova tive enough to take it up?

Time will tell.

The wind might have been blowing, but the players still stepped out onto the lawns on Saturday for the opening day of the season at the Waireka Croquet Club. With another busy season of play ahead, the day was the perfect occasion to get the wheels moving for the season, with the club also hosting an open afternoon to the public for anyone who wished to come and give the sport a go.

Hammers back on right track

Now, that’s a bit more like it.

Mid Canterbury took the first step toward getting their Heart land Championship campaign back on track on Saturday, de livering exactly what the doc tor, and their coach – ordered, a five-competition point victory over West Coast, winning 48-15 at the Ashburton Showgrounds.

And now, despite dropping their first two games, the Ham mers find themselves inside the top six in the competition and right in the hunt for a chance at some silverware come the busi ness end of the season.

That’s a good confidence booster with a game against North Otago coming up in Kurow this weekend, where there’s a strong need for another step for ward from the team in green and gold.

Playing into a stiff wind in the opening half on the weekend, Mid Canterbury were patient but still would have been disappoint ed to trundle into the sheds down 8-15 at the halftime break, after letting West Coast score two easy tries.

But with the wind at their back and a real sense of determination around them, Mid Canterbury flicked the switch in the second half, scoring 40 unanswered points to run away convincing winners.

Coaches John Sherratt, Pete Manson and Grant Polson will have some really strong discus sions ahead of them this week as they set down to select their side for North Otago, with a number of players given an opportunity on the weekend really putting their hands up.

None more however than debutant Tom Middleton and midfielder Isireli Masiwini, who both shone in their performanc es.

Both were outstanding throughout the match with plen

ty of go-forward ball, especially from Masiwini who proved a real headache for his opposition.

Middleton looked like he’d been playing Heartland rugby for years, with good organisation from the back but a strong tacti cal nous which saw him get in volved when required and inject himself into the game.

He also had a strong day with the boot, claiming 11 points off the tee.

Up front, the forward pack real ly settled into their work.

The loose forward trio of Kay dis Hona, Michael Hennings and Nasi Manu led the charge, and produced some real authority when given the ball.

Hennings in particular seemed to be involved in everything, his work at the breakdown and with ball in hand pushing him to a strong contender for man of the match.

From the 54-minute mark when winger Waitangi Tuisuga scored, Mid Canterbury were at their best.

They really put West Coast to the sword, and showed that their ability on the paddock is far greater than what their early re cord might be this season, send ing a clear warning sign to their future rivals in the process.

The injection of players off the bench offered promise as well.

Ben Barlett had a big game when he came on just after halftime, disrupting at the break down and putting in some strong runs with the ball in hand, while Manasa Samo showed he’s not far off the pace despite missing a few weeks of play with a solid shift as well.

The win puts Mid Canterbury in a better position.

And if the Hammers can pull a rabbit out of the hat this week end against a North Otago side which features the very familiar face of Seta Koroitamana, then they’ll really be able to surge to wards the playoff stage of the competition.

The Mid Canterbury A netball side capped off a slightly reduced, but still enjoyable representative campaign on the weekend by going three-from-three on home ground in their final tournament of the season.

Initially they should have been away playing in the South Island Senior Netball tournament, but it was cancelled, and only some swift organisation from Mid Can terbury Netball in putting to gether a makeshift event meant they played in more than just the Hanan Shield for the year.

Mid Canterbury played three games on the weekend, winning all three – but having to dig deep in each to get over the line.

They opened their weekend against North Otago, and found themselves down by nine goal at the break, but turned things around to claim a 39-36 win by the final whistle.

“It was one of those games, we were down by a lot – but I never really felt like they were dropping their heads, and slowly but surely they worked their way back into it and got the win.”

South Canterbury were up first in the afternoon, and again it was close before Mid Canterbury drew clear late for a 38-31 win.

With both of their Hanan Shield rivals out of the way, Mid Canterbury turned to Selwyn for their final act of the season.

Again, Selwyn were in control early – but Mid Canterbury’s nev er-die attitude lifted them again, and they won 39-32 to claim hon ours for the day between the four sides.

“I think it was the perfect way

to round out the season. With 10 to go there were a few discussions about how it was the final 10 minutes of the year and how we needed to give it everything.

“And they went out and did it, and did it really well too.”

The results on the weekend

mark an unbeaten season for the side, winning all five of their matches – a strong start for Meadows in her debut season as coach of the side.

“It’s been a good year; we’ve got great support from Mid Canter bury Netball and the team have

come together so well as a unit and played great netball.”

With the Hanan Shield locked away in the cabinet for 12 months and some really strong steps for ward taken by the squad this year, there’s a lot to look forward to in 2023 as well.

Footballing weekends don’t get much better than Mid Canterbury United’s last weekend.

Five games of football and not a defeat in sight as the local sides registered four wins and a draw across Mainland Football action, with the season end now firmly in sight this weekend for some sides.

The Mid Canterbury United senior side are looking to finish with a flourish after battling out a hard-fought 1-all draw with Cashmere Technical on Saturday after noon.

But again, it was more frustration for the Mid Canterbury United Reserves side who, for the second week in a row, were left without a match after Burnham failed to turn up for their game on the weekend.

That banks a 3-0 win in the official book-keeping, but the side will be hoping they can get on the paddock this week as they round out their outstanding season on the pitch with a home game against Hornby United this weekend on the Ash burton Domain.

In the junior grades, teams are now pre paring for tournament football, but the winning just didn’t stop on Saturday.

The 17th grade side claimed a 7-1 win against FC Twenty 11 in a completely dominant performance, while the 15th grade team were forced to fight a lot hard er, eventually winning 4-3.

The 13th grade side were also victorious with a 3-0 win over Nomads to continue their impressive season.

Meanwhile, Methven United pushed their way into the top four in Division Three with a strong 3-0 win over Waimak United on the weekend.

They’ll look to round off their season in style this weekend too, playing West ern AFC, who currently sit third, away in Christchurch.

The pair, along with Southland’s Su zanne Mackie and Waikato’s Joy Archer, picked themselves up though to register wins on Friday and Saturday morning and win the discipline tie convincingly.

Michael Lawson and Simon Thomas completed three intense days of bowls on Saturday as New Zealand continued it’s stranglehold over their Australian coun terparts in the biennial event.

But New Zealand did it the hard way, coming from behind to get over the top of the Aussies and claim the victory 17.5 to 15.5 in a close match up.

It was triple delight for Thomas and Lawson too.

Not only did they get to help lift the overall trophy, but they also both claimed two Trans-Tasman medals for individual victories over their rivals in the two dis ciplines they played in across the three days.

It was a little more straightforward for the local duo in the Men’s Triples, in which they combined with Otago’s Daniel French.

They won all three matches by big mar gins, with the medal tidied up before the last day of play.

Their win on Saturday afternoon, the fi nal session of the test match, proved crit ical however in helping the side to their overall success.

The team returned home to New Zea land and Sunday with two big weekends of play still ahead.

Thomas will head to Wellington this week to compete in the New Zealand mixed fours final alongside his wife Jul ie, Grant Wilson and Raewyn Robin and then the following weekend both he and Lawson will look to lead Ashburton to a maiden success in the pinnacle of rep resentative bowls in New Zealand, the Welch Trophy.

A winning treble for local horse woman Sarah O’Reilly highlight ed a dominant day for the locals on their home track at Ashburton on Sunday.

O’Reilly book-ended the pro gramme, winning the first and last race as she extended her lead on the national junior drivers’ premiership considerably, and lifted herself to sixth on the over all drivers’ championship for the current season.

Punters were delighted when she landed some big bets and heavy support for the Brent White-trained Sirius in the first race of the day.

O’Reilly has recently linked up with the White stable at the Ash burton Racecourse, and wasted

no time in repaying her new boss with a winner.

Her second for the day came two races later when she com bined with her father, Gerard, to pilot Takeitout for success –again, a horse heavily supported by punters late in proceedings.

A recent acquisition to the O’Reilly barn after beginning her career in Southland, Takeitout stalked the speed and burst out at the top of the straight to win in a New Zealand record time for a two-year-old filly in 1:58.8, beat ing the previous record – set on Friday night at Alexandra Park –by more than a second and a half.

O’Reilly then had to wait until the last of the day to get another win on the board, but timed her run perfectly with the Michael House-trained Changearound who scooted up the lane to win and take his driver to 44 wins for the season.

The win of Sirius early in the day was the first of two for trainer

White on his home track.

He produced Sassy Star to win late in the day for loyal owners Dave and Gaye Luke, with Kim berly Butt handling the driving duties to perfection with the tal ented young trotter.

Local owner Carl Nordqvist was also in the winners’ circle on home ground at Sunday’s

meeting with his pacer, Elite Styx a promoted winner during the middle of the card. The Grant Payne-trained pacer was second horse past the post, but the win ner Theresa Love galloped over the line and was subsequently

relegated to fourth, giving Elite Styx the victory.

Harness racing on a Sunday remains in Mid Canterbury this week with the first grass track meeting of the season at Methven this weekend.
