New Winz memorial unveiled Malcolm Hopwood The new memorial to the victims of the Winz shootings just over seven years ago has been unveiled.

Around 50 invited guests attended the unveiling which saw the new memorial, designed and crafted by Peter Green, displayed for the first time.

The new structure is in the shape of a sphere, but includes

the original infinity design within it.

Green chose Oamaru stone to build the memorial and spent several weeks in the town working on it.

Community House general manager, Jess Wilson, described the new sculpture as significantly bigger and more robust than the previous one which was vandalised earlier this year.

The memorial commemorates Winz staff members, Peg Noble and Susan Leigh Cleveland, “who were killed on September 1, 2014 while serving the people of Ashburton”.

“Sadly Missed.”

School’s mural finished Maddison Gourlay Rakaia’s School principal is thrilled about the new mural.

The school has had Christchurch-based artist Wongi Wilson create a mural which incorporates key elements and values of the school and the Rakaia area.

“What a talented man he (Wongi) is,” principal Mark Ellis said.

“It’s incredible what he has

done, with spray paints and it only took him two days.

“We had the area coned off but the pupils absolutely loved watching him work.”

The three flames represent the school values partnership (red), quality (yellow) and respect (green).

The mural also includes the kaitiaki, a grey heron, who nests at school. Tu te Raki Whanoa, the Rakaia Gorge Taniwha and the Rakaia salmon.

The money for the mural came from government funding that was rolled out at the end of 2019 to help schools fund upgrades that had been

put on the back burner.

Ellis said many schools were likely to spend the money on playgrounds, but as well as the mural Rakaia has also utilised the school investment package for upgrading its sandpit.

For the mural Ellis wanted to commission Wilson for the job as he saw various works of art he had created in Ashburton.

“We worked together on the design, mostly in what ideas I would like,” Ellis said.

“But with his own creative license, he came up with something that was truly incredible and represents our school well.”

Doris’ belated birthday greeting from Bradley Walsh Malcolm Hopwood First the Queen and now Bradley Walsh.

That was the thrill for Ashburton’s Doris Wakelin, 104, who received the surprise of her life yesterday when popular British TV star Bradley Walsh, the host of The Chase, sent her a belated video birthday greeting.

Bradley told Doris that he knew “how old or young she was” and he sent the greeting from him “and all the gang” involved with the hit TV quiz programme.

“Keep watching The Chase,” he said.

The video was a huge surprise for Doris, who didn’t know that the Guardian had contacted Walsh’s agent in London and asked if the long-time star would send her a birthday greeting.

Yesterday Ashburton Guardian owner Bruce Bell and Malcolm Hopwood collected Doris from her home and brought her to the newspaper’s office where they played Walsh’s birthday greeting.

The greeting took some time to happen as Walsh had been filming across Europe for three months and only returned last week to record new episodes of The Chase.

Doris didn’t mind that it came well after her July 24 birthday because she loves The Chase and watches it on TV One, both morning and night.

She even remembered Walsh when he played Danny Baldwin on Coronation Street.

A cheeky Doris, in a return video message, thanked Walsh and invited him out to Ashburton to her 105th birthday next July.

“It’s marvellous to receive his greeting,” Doris said.

Receiving the video from the far side of the world was not lost on the centurion, who has witnessed a dramatic change in tel-

ecommunications in her time.

She said she loves Skype and was able to stay in contact through that platform with family members around New Zealand.

“I’ve received congratulations from The Queen and now Bradley,” she said, before being taken home in time for a Meals on Wheels lunch and, undoubtedly, a viewing of the Chase last night.

Restriction kickback adding to hospo stress Adam Burns

Disgruntled patrons who have resisted Level 2 restrictions at bars and restaurants in Ashburton are adding unwanted stress for staff members.

The sector is calling for more understanding from locals around Level 2 compliance after some members of the public have turned aggressive and abusive when asked to wear masks upon arrival.

“We just want to reduce some of the pressure and stress on them really because they’re doing the best they can in difficult circumstances,” Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service (ACADS) health promoter Andrae Gold said.

The Devon Tavern was taking a no-nonsense approach where if no-one was willing to comply they would be asked to leave the premises.

“It’s not their job to be policing this,” Gold said.

“People should know by now what the requirements are under Level 2.”

Gold said there was a sense of cynicism among some of the public.

“I think there is a sense of complacency,” she said.

“We don’t have it in the South Island, so why should we bother and I think we have some people who are resistant to being told what to do.”

The Somerset Grocer and Millhouse Kitchen co-owner Mark Milmine said he had copped abuse for “simply following the rules”.

He urged all cafes and restaurants to uniformly adopt the same guidelines so another lockdown could be avoided.

ACADS and Devon Tavern owners the Ashburton Trust both suggested that guidance for bar managers did veer into grey areas.

“With gaming machines everyone had to be a metre apart and we applied the same rules for mask wearing as we did for oth-

Breast Cancer Foundation NZ is partnering with the Ashburton District Council to develop and trial the exercise programme, which is aimed at building bone strength during and after breast cancer treatment. The 12-week pilot has just begun with a one-hour weekly class run by an exercise professional, plus exercises to do at home.

Twelve people have signed up, with room for three more. Christchurch and Invercargill are also trialling the breast cancer programme. EA Networks Centre also runs Prosfit, which is a male-only cancer class.

Vaccine clinic The Canterbury District Health Board is holding a drop-in vaccination clinic at the Southern Rugby Club in Hinds on Tuesday.

No appointments are necessary and people can just turn up for a vaccination between 11am-3pm.

■■ You can use the gaming machines as long as you do not eat or drink in the gaming lounge.

■■ You must wear a face covering when using the gaming machines, and keep 1 metre apart from others.

The Hororata Community Trust has made the difficult decision to cancel the 11th Hororata Highland Games planned for November 6. The games attract round 10,000 people annually and can only operate in Alert Level 1, but the Trust chair Richard Lang said “given the current uncertainty with Covid alert levels we have needed to make a firm decision now to cancel the games”.

“The trust is committed to the Hororata Highland Games and looks forward to bringing this festival back in 2022.” All tickets that have been sold through Eventfinda will be refunded. Competitors and stallholders will also be refunded.

Cup week For the first time in its 117-year history Addington Cup Week, held annually during the second week of November, may not have its full public capacity. Tickets were due to go on sale this week but have been put on hold due to Alert Level 2 limiting crowds to 100 people.

There is a lack of certainty that the venue will be able to be open to the public. Addington Raceway chief executive, Brian Thompson, said the races will still go ahead, but if the country is still under mass gathering restrictions it will not be possible to hold Cup Week as a publicly accessible event.

Winner winner, doggy dinner Maddison Gourlay It started as a celebration of international dog day, but ended up being one of the Guardian’s most successful competitions – to find Mid Canterbury’s top pooches.

Run on Facebook, we received hundreds of entries of fabulous small, medium and big dogs, plus more than 400 comments and it reached over 20,000 Guardian Facebook followers. It was hard

to narrow them down to the top 21. It was even harder to come up with the three winners, who each received a prize from event sponsor Petzone.

Our winners were: Large dog category winner: Jenson Owner: Kristina Sheppard Fun facts: Jenson, otherwise called Mr Jensy, is a 10-year-old staffie collie cross. He joined the Sheppard family when they left the United Kingdom to live in New Zealand. Jenson was named after the British grand touring car, the Jensen Interceptor. Jenson helps more than just the Sheppard family because he is also a qualified therapy dog. He

visits schools around the district and Methven House old persons’ resthome through the organisation Canine Friends. Jenson is also a very stylish dog, wearing various costumes at Christmas time. As well as the pirate costume that he wore in his entry photo, he also has an alligator costume, a sombrero, and a horse racing jockey that sits on his back.

Medium dog category winner: Sir Atticus Hemmingway Barlett the 1st Owner: Sarah Bartlett Sir Atticus Hemmingway Bartlett the 1st, the American bulldog, is the only dog on the list to have his own Instagram account. He

is a fashion forward pooch with a variety of hoodies, jackets and bandannas. His incredible name comes from his owner Sarah’s love of literature. Atticus, for Atticus Finch from Harper Lee’s, To Kill a Mockingbird. Hemingway, from the American novelist Ernest Hemingway, and the Sir and 1st is to make it more extravagant. Atticus holds a special place in owner Sarah’s heart as she got him after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. He was an extra motivator to keep fighting. Sarah said living with him is like being with an old man as he’s often grumpy faced and asleep on the couch. She also thinks Atticus does not realise he’s a dog,

often sitting on the couch like a human, but nonetheless, she said he’s a big part of the family.

Small dog category winner: Tui Owner: Nelle Thomas Tui is the youngest competition winner at only five months old. She’s a miniature dachshund, who never makes a noise.

She’s a super cuddly puppy, but when she sees her cousins, she’s a rough and tumble dog while playing. Her name came from a family trip down to Queenstown to pick her up. Their accommodation had a spa pool under a tree and all they could hear was a tui bird song and tui’s flying between trees on the property.

Hence the name.

MPs query SI Level 2 extension Jonathan Leask The South Island national MPs have sent a please explain letter to the government over the extension of level 2 restrictions.

The MPs submitted a jointly signed letter that requests a copy of the expert advice the government received that led to the decision to keep the South Island at Covid Alert Level 2 that was announced last week.

“The decision for the South Island to remain at Alert Level 2 for the foreseeable future will have a deep and irrevocable impact on South Islanders, and inevitably force more businesses to close if this is prolonged,” the letter reads.

The sensory packs are funded by Maia Health Foundation in Christchurch and have been distributed to CAF teams in Ashburton, Christchurch, Rangiora, and Rolleston.

The aim of the take-home kit is to start a young person’s journey to understand how important their senses are when they want to feel ‘just right’.

The kits contain items that relate to the different sensory systems, to help calm, alert, or even distract a young person.

CAF health consultant, Tracy Boon, said the packs are already making a difference for families, taking the stress and worry out of sourcing and purchasing the items

themselves.

“The sensory kits are helpful when a young person is new to the CAF service and in a distressed state,” Boon said.

“To give the family an introductory pack for their child as they leave their initial appointment, can be so reassuring for parents and it makes the staff feel good too.”

The take-home sensory packs, along with a menagerie of weighted animals now being used within the CAF teams, are the first steps in Maia Health Foundation’s mission to make a difference for young people/rangatahi.

Weighted animals can provide great therapeutic benefit, calming the nervous system and helping to ground children dealing with sensory processing issues or trauma, Boon said.

Maia Health Foundation is a Christchurch charity with the purpose of enhancing the Canterbury health experience.

It aims to raise up to $6 million by 2023 to help create a modern, fit-for-purpose CAF outpatient facility that is welcoming and safe.

They are urging transparency on the expert advice that resulted in the indefinite extension.

“Our communities need to understand the rationale for the Covid Alert Level 2 extension for the South Island so they can be assured that their sacrifices are well justified.”

Rangitata MP Jo Luxton reiterated the Prime Minister’s statements that the decision is based on risk.

Luxton said the South Island can only move down to Alert Level 1 “when we are sure that we can do it safely and without putting people at risk”.

“While there is an outbreak in Auckland that continues to produce cases, there is risk.

“While to people here in Ashburton and the rest of the country outside of Auckland that risk might feel low, there is still reason to remain cautious.”

She reported receiving a mini-

mal number of queries about the move to Level 1, but has received feedback about shutting off the North Island.

The Government has considered what this kind of boundary could look like “in the event public health officials recommend such a division”.

Restricting non-essential travel between the islands would reduce the risk of spread, Luxton said, but would further impact tourism and hospitality businesses.

“These are just some of the factors the Government considers when making decisions on alert level settings.

“Of course, it is important to remember that Cabinet acts on the advice of public health officials, as they are best placed to assess risk in different scenarios.”

It is that advice that the National MPs want to be made public.

It is expected an announcement around the alert levels will be made on Monday.

Hospice hunt for biographers Jonathan Leask Hospice Mid Canterbury (HMC) is calling for new volunteers to join its biography team.

The growing demand for its popular service means HMC is looking for new volunteers to join its dedicated team of biographers who are trained to record the life stories of clients.

The service has been offered since 2015 with almost 100 biographies compiled, but the current team of 10 is in such high demand that for the first time there is a waiting list.

“One of the most precious legacies a person can leave is the story of their life, and biographers find it a real privilege to help clients get their memories and stories down,” co-ordinator of the service, Christine Wilson, said.

A biographer will go into the home, usually once a week, for an hour, to record the client’s stories and then type them up, she said.

Some biographies are completed in a few weeks, while others take longer.

“Getting one’s story down allows the client and often the caregiver to reflect on the person’s life,” Wilson said.

“The retelling of the stories has proved to be a therapeutic element of biography writing and

HMC offers training and on-going support for new biographers.

A biographer needs to have reasonable writing fluency and needs to be a bit tech savvy, she said.

They use phones to record cli-

ents’ words and then the biographer types these up.

Over a period of a few weeks, the biography takes shape from the stories told, and photos can also be included.

“Biographers need to have a genuine interest in people. As one of the biographers often says: ‘I love people’s stories’.”

Losing her locks for a cure Maddison Gourlay Ashburton’s Emma Simonsen is excited her luscious locks will help cancer patients and communities in Africa.

Simonsen has raised $900 for Shave for a Cure thanks to donations from the general public as well as family and friends, exceeding her goal of $700, and donated the hair to make wigs.

What started out simply as a desire to shave her head, Simonsen then found a way to make it really worthwhile.

“I had been thinking about shaving if off for a while now, so I thought why not raise

money for a good cause at the same time,” she said.

She registered with the Shave for a Cure fundraiser in late May, and then sat down to have her locks chopped off last week.

As Simonsen sat in the chair of Tangelz hair stylist Alyssha Weaver, she was asked if she was donating the hair.

She was unsure if her hair was suitable to donate, due to it being coloured and a short length, but Weaver said they worked with Hair Collect and they could use her off-cuts.

Hair Collect was created with the aim of reducing poverty through employment in Uganda and Kenya by using donations from hair salons in New Zealand.

The hair is collected in New Zealand and shipped off to Uganda to be made into wigs.

“I really hope someone gets to enjoy my hair,” Simonsen said.

Roberts a finalist for award Heather Chalmers The head of a Mid Canterbury dairy farming group which is leading the way with innovations such as flexible work rosters and regenerative agriculture has been named a finalist in a prestigious trans-Tasman competition for young agricultural leaders.

Rhys Roberts, 34, is chief executive of Align Farms which has five dairy farms and two support blocks in Mid Canterbury.

He is one of four New Zealand finalists in the Zanda McDonald Award.

Four Australian finalists have also been named, with two winners, one from each side of the Tasman to be announced in November, following face-to-face interviews in their respective countries.

Roberts also manages one of the Align dairy farms, Clareview, with his wife Kiri, a 296 hectare farm milking 1100 cows at Westerfield.

At Clareview, staff can work flexible hours, picking what days and times they work using an app on their phone.

Clareview is also trialling regenerative farming in a dairy farming system, with

half the farm being run conventionally and the other half under regenerative farming to monitor and compare the performance of both systems.

In its eighth year, the Zanda McDonald Award recognises future young leaders working in agriculture and provides an impressive prize package centred around a tailored trans-Tasman mentoring programme.

The eight finalists have been selected for their passion for the industry, strong leadership skills, and the contributions they’re making in the primary sector.

The other three New Zealand finalists are Adam Thompson, 35, director of Restore Native Plant Nursery, beef farmer and mortgage broker from Cambridge; Katie Vickers, 28, head of sustainability and land use for Farmlands, Christchurch and Olivia Weatherburn, 33, national extension programme manager for Beef + Lamb NZ from Mossburn Southland.

Synlait posts largest ever loss Grant Watson announced as new CEO

Heather Chalmers Canterbury-based Synlait Milk has reported a $28.5 million loss for the year ending July after Covid-19 disruptions caused a sharp drop in global a2 Milk sales.

This represents a $102.8m turnaround in fortunes from the previous year, when the milk exporter recorded a net profit of $75.2m.

Synlait chief executive John Penno said that after nine years of profitability, it was very disappointing to post the company’s largest ever loss.

Synlait was hit by a sudden drop in infant nutrition demand after its cornerstone customer and shareholder The a2 Milk Company was impacted by disrupted “daigou” unofficial trade channels into China.

In contrast, Synlait came into the 2021 year with large volumes of nutritional powders on hand (40 per cent of forward demand) with the expectation that demand would grow.

This forced Synlait to shift its production to lower margin products and restructure its business.

Synlait’s revenue rose by 5 per cent to $1.36 billion, while its EBITDA fell 78 per cent to $37.3m. Dairyworks revenue was $229 million.

Penno said that Synlait remained a growth company and was working to grow its revenue to $2 billion. It was working to move the business back to a position of financial strength and was working with its banks.

A2 Milk was its most important customer and was expected to remain so for some time, Penno said.

The board has appointed Grant Watson as its chief executive.

Currently chief executive of dairy company Miraka, Watson will join Synlait in January.

Prior to Miraka, Watson spent 10 years at Fonterra where he held several senior roles.

Synlait chair Graeme Milne said that prior to Miraka, Watson led the significant growth of Fonterra’s global food service business and has overseen the successful commercialisation of numerous value-added dairy products.

“This was a key part of Synlait’s strategy going forward and we look forward to benefiting from his skills and experience.”

Watson will be joined by Robert Stowell who has been appointed chief financial officer after acting in the role for the past five months.

As previously signalled, Milne will retire at Synlait’s annual meeting in Christchurch on December 1.

Synlait expects its net profit after tax result to return to robust profitability in the 2022 year.

However, considering Synlait’s recent challenges the board was keen to maintain Milne’s knowledge given his 17 years with Synlait.

When Watson starts as chief executive, Milne will retire as chairman and be appointed as a board advisor for one year.

John Penno will be appointed chairman when Milne retires.

The total average milk payment for the 2020-21 season was $7.82 per kg of milksolids. This was made up of a base milk price of $7.55 per kgMS and 27 cents of incentives (including Lead With Pride).

This was the second highest milk price Synlait has paid and was a result of strong and consistent demand for dairy products, especially from southeast Asia.

Strong demand continues for dairy and had resulted in its forecast milk price remaining at $8kg/MS for the current 2021-22 season.

tribution from its liquids and consumer foods business units and targeted and significant cost savings from Synlait, Dairyworks and Talbot Forest Cheese.

The 2022 year will also include a one-off gain of about $17m from the sale and leaseback of the land and building at Synlait Auckland.

Staff numbers have reduced by 15 per cent with annual savings of $10 to $12m.

Synlait’s performance will build into the 2023 year as its new multinational customer at Synlait Pokeno ramps up, and its liquids and consumer foods businesses continue to grow.

The Ashburton councillor told it like it is when discussing our district’s controversial roading audit report conducted by Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency.

You’ll probably be aware that NZTA, quite unbelievably and to the mirth of many in the community, reported that the Ashburton district’s roads were in “good condition’’, though some improvements were needed.

Wilson summarised it perfectly when he said: “We’re above the national average, but the national average must be pretty horrible.’’

Correct sir. So very correct.

“It’s this bugbear with potholes, no matter what contractor we have,’’ he added.

Spot on again. Potholes and more potholes. Is there a bigger community issue? Nope.

Daryl Holden And, honestly, it shows no sign of improvement, especially if the Ashburton District Council keeps getting knocked back in its roading funding applications by NZTA. They recently got $46 million approved by NZTA, but that left the council with a near $5 million shortfall and plenty of concern.

And that’s despite Ashburton’s 2600km roading network being one of the biggest in the country and with many areas needing major repair and resurfacing work because of legacy issues and following damage caused by

biblical-like floods at the end of May. Wilson, again, made a very good point when he wondered if “sometimes we should request more and risk getting knocked back’’. Agreed.

Look, it’s like this: If you could lure a top rock band to play at your private birthday bash, and money was not an issue, then surely you would chase the very best and target U2. Now, you may end up with Southland country music performers, the Progress Valley Possum Pickers, but at least you aimed high for a start.

That’s Wilson’s point.

Could the ADC not apply for seriously more than $51 million, based on extra data and further roading issues as part of their business case?

Apply for $61 million, for example – privately with no real

expectation of getting it – but perhaps the concern, surprise and justification of an increased application amount could result in maybe $56 million coming the council’s way.

Yes, it’s a long shot, and a bit out there and probably not following due process, but something has to happen, as Wilson has rightly alluded to.

And one more thing . . .

So South Africa appears to be standing by their dour boot-theball-at-all-costs approach, even though they were beaten by the All Blacks in the historic 100th rugby test match between the two old foes in Townsville on Saturday night.

The Boks have tried to justify their limited game plan because, they have argued, it delivers results and they were just unlucky

in Townsville.

It’s true that the All Blacks, thanks to a late Jordie Barrett penalty goal, were fortunate to win, but win they did, playing well below their best.

The thing South Africa and its fans need to remember is that numbers don’t lie. South Africa has now lost three tests in a row and four already this year. So how does that provide justification for kicking the ball as much as they do?

Yes, they’re the 2019 world champions but the game continues to evolve and move on.

So it may be time to rethink that approach, even if they say the style is in their DNA. South Africa has also managed to beat the All Blacks only twice in the past 17 tests.

That, my friends, surely says it all.

COVID RESTRICTIONS

Were Key’s comments a bigger headache for Collins or Ardern?

ere’s Johnny! The scene in The Shining in which Jack Nicholson’s character pops his head through a hole in the door was once judged the scariest horror movie scene of all time.

It would be fair to say Sir John Key’s leap into the debate about the Covid-19 plan is more of a horror story for National Party leader Judith Collins than for Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

Key’s forthright call for more certainty around when the borders will reopen, suggestions of ways to get there, and scathing criticism of the MIQ system hit the newspapers on Sunday.

Since then, he has done interview after interview on it. He has had more publicity in one day than Collins has managed since the outbreak began.

Key was motivated by more than genuine and growing concern about what was happening.

The other motivation was concern about the collapse of the party he once led.

National was having little impact in the debate around Covid-19.

It was tanking in the polls – and last night’s 1 News Colmar Brunton could help clear up whether or not the Taxpayers’ Union Curia poll which put National at just 21 per cent was rogue or not.

If National could not be on message and grab the agenda a bit, he would do it for them and remind people of what National could be like.

The trouble for Collins is it will have done just that: reminded people of what National under Key was like. The massive reaction to his piece shows he still has a lot of clout.

Collins had no warning his piece was coming. It was published days before Collins is due to release National’s own Covid-19 policy, which will happen tomorrow. It is understood Key was not aware of that timing.

The Herald has been told that the policy is more timid and cautious than Key’s prescription: and that in itself may now cause National more problems.

Key’s dominance of the news bulletins has sidelined Collins.

It did not escape National MPs’ notice that Key voiced appreciation for Act leader David Seymour and his policy for privately run MIQs – but did not even mention Collins.

It has given us a glimpse of the two great political persuaders of our time – Ardern and Key – going head-to-head.

It’s safe to say that those who never liked John Key will dismiss every word he said as complete bollocks, and have decided they still do not like John Key. In such debates, nuance is sorely needed.

It was present in Key’s arguments about when and how the borders could start to reopen.

It was present in Ardern’s argu-

It is present in the science and modelling that are being considered in making those decisions.

It has and will always be the case with politicians (and former politicians) that it becomes more about the politician than the point they are actually making.

The trouble is that each side expects their own nuances and caveats to be recognised while merrily ignoring the other side’s.

and casting Auckland as the Pyongyang of the South Pacific.

There was his call for the borders to reopen “and soon” without any regard to the steps Key said had to be taken to do that.

Those who never liked him have quickly gone to the extremes of saying Key wanted to throw those border restrictions aside, let Covid-19 in and damn the consequences just so he can go to Maui.

But take away the rhetorical flourishes and what you are left

Nuance is no fun to argue about so people grasp one aspect of an issue that angers them and cast a verdict on the entire discussion based on that one aspect.

In Key’s case, the aspects grabbed on by his critics was the, admittedly deliberately provocative, use of “hermit kingdom”

with is this: A call for certainty about when NZ will join those other countries opening up. A call for more to be done to get us there. A valid criticism of the MIQ system’s inadequacy in catering to the demand for it.

He put up some ideas to get vaccination rates up and relieve

the bottleneck of MIQ. He did not pretend his ideas were all that is needed: it was to kickstart other ideas.

Some of his ideas are the same as those the Government is looking at anyway, including home isolation for travellers.

It was, above all, a call for the Government to put a little trust in someone other than the State to come up with ideas, and how to implement them.

Key’s entry into the debate will cause problems for Ardern – because there will be people who agree with him, and it will intensify the demands for answers on the questions he has raised.

Key’s call for that information has already pushed Ardern into specifying a threshold, although not one related to the borders.

Yesterday she set out that getting 90 per cent of the eligible population vaccinated would mean about 75 per cent of the whole population was vaccinated – and that could be enough to ensure lockdowns were no longer needed.

That number may grow as vaccination rates grow and time drags on.

Key was highly trusted for a very long time by a lot of people.

Ardern too is highly trusted by a lot of people, and when it

comes to dealing with Covid-19, she would be more trusted than Key. At the moment, public support for keeping the borders closed until the 90 per cent mark is much higher than for Key’s proposal of opening the borders once everybody has had a fair chance to get vaccinated. But if we can’t hit that 90 per cent, will the PM get to the point of considering the latter?

Disgruntlement at having to wait while the unvaccinated are cajoled into getting vaccinated will only grow. People will wonder when they can actually use the “golden ticket” they were promised by getting vaccinated.

As for that trip to Maui, it may not be as easy as that. Hawaii has just increased its restrictions on visitors again because of another outbreak.

It means only people from a handful of countries can enter without having to do 10 days’ isolation.

New Zealand is not one of those countries, despite its strong record in containing Covid-19.

Key may well have a few words to say about why that is the case.

As long as Auckland is in lockdown, he’ll have plenty of time to put them to paper.

Race to $1m back on Matt Markham Champion Mid Canterbury born, raised and developed trotter Tornado Valley’s bid to reach $1 million in earnings is back on track.

The outstanding trotter is expected to make a return to the trials next week, as his connections plot one last campaign before his career comes to an end.

A now nine-year-old, the multiple Group One winner has so far fallen short in his bid to become just the ninth Australasian-bred trotter to reach the $1 million prizemoney mark, being beaten in his last three trips to the races – which has left him stuck on $996,979 in earnings.

Bred and raced in his early career here in Mid Canterbury by Terry McMillan, Tornado Valley was last seen when he ran third in May, but news late last week suggested that the son of Skyvalley is ready for a trial.

Tornado Valley is on the cusp of $1 million in earnings.

“If you don’t see him at the trials this Monday at Melton, you will the following week. So, he’s pretty close,” trainer, Andy Gath said.

“He’s in really good order, soundness-wise he’s really good, health-wise he’s good, he looks well.

“I’d say at this stage he will probably trial Monday night at Melton and we will just be guided by his trials – how many he

needs and how he is performing – before we step back on the racetrack.

“We really haven’t got any races earmarked for him.

“Unfortunately, he’s got to take on his stablemate Majestuoso if he does step out, so it’s not going to be easy.

“I’d say there’s a good chance this will be his last preparation, but we won’t race him just for the sake of it.

“We’ve got to be convinced that he’s going to be close to his best before he steps out on the racetrack.”

If successful in reaching the million-dollar mark, Tornado Valley would join fellow greats Lyell Creek, I Can Doosit, Sundons Gift, Speeding Spur, Take A Moment, Stent, Keystone Del and One Over Kenny as those from this part of the world to achieve the feat.

Methven Cup still in limbo Matt Markham No decision has been made around the location of the Methven Trotting Club meeting next week.

Last week, a decision was made by the club that due to damage suffered to the track in the high winds earlier this month that their biggest day of the year wouldn’t be held on the famed Mt Harding surface, with a view to seeing the meeting shifted to the Orari Racecourse near Geraldine instead.

Members of the Methven Trotting Club met with Harness Racing New Zealand officials last week to inspect the Methven surface, which is recovering well and expected to be ready to use at the club’s October 30 meeting – but no official word has come through on where the Methven Cup meeting will be held.

While Orari is the club’s preferred option, the final decisions rests with Harness Racing New Zealand.

suitable to hold the meeting, which carries the Group Three $30,000 Methven Cup – which is a traditional lead-up race to the New Zealand Trotting Cup in November.

It’s understood that if Orari isn’t given the all clear by Harness Racing New Zealand, then Motukarara, on Banks Penin-

sula, which is the next closest grass track racing venue, is likely to be given the option of hosting the meeting for the Methven club.

This year’s Methven Cup is expected to draw a strong field, with many leading Cup contenders signalling their intent to be there.

Included in that list, potentially, is defending New Zealand Trotting Cup champion, Self Assured, who will return to the races this week in the Canterbury Classic at Addington on Friday night.

Self Assured finished second in last year’s Methven Cup behind Spankem.

An elephant that can really fly Kiwi galloper Elephant has rebounded from his sole career defeat with an impressive win in Saturday’s Sandown Stakes.

The Emma-Lee and David Browne-trained gelding suffered his first defeat when thrust into the deep end when he ran a game second in the Feehan Stakes at The Valley on September 4, before resuming winning ways at Sandown on Saturday.

Sent out the $2.35 favourite under Damian Lane, Elephant scored a 1¼ length win from Romancer, with Harbour Views two lengths away third.

Elephant has now won two of his three runs on Australian soil and advanced his record to six wins from seven starts.

The lightly-tried five-year-old is now set to run in the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield on October 9.

“That’ll be the plan and where we end up,” David Browne said.

“I was pretty nervous, to be fair, but he was super. That was pretty strong. He kept kicking to the line well and I think there is a bit more improvement yet.

“He’s strengthened up a bit and his coat has got a bit to go still.

Hopefully he can carry on with it.

“In all his races, if you look at them, in the last bit he always finds a bit more and lengthens out really well. That’s where he gets it over the rest of them.”

Browne, who has made a sacrifice by being away from his family for an extended period while campaigning the galloper in locked-down Melbourne, said the son of Shocking had exceeded all expectations.

“He just keeps on finding a little bit more,” Browne said. “He never disappoints us.

“It is a bit the same for everyone (in Melbourne) at the moment – eat, sleep, repeat,” Browne said.

“You just concentrate on your work and that is about it.”

Lane has been aboard Elephant in his two Australian victories, while Luke Currie had the mount when the gelding was narrowly defeated by Superstorm at The Valley.

He said the gelding was still a “raw” horse but had taken some really good steps.

“He’s taken benefit from his two runs and he’s starting to put it together,” Lane said.

“Today he was still a little unsure in putting the race away and pricked his ears on the line, but he’s a horse who is learning and he’s certainly going about it the right way.”

Lane said Elephant was the right type for the Toorak, but hopes he is not too harshly handicapped after rising sharply in the ratings after the Feehan placing.

Windy start to Tinwald Cycling Club’s season The Tinwald Cycling Club kicked off their 2021/22 season contesting the Dpi/EmbriodMe: Health 2000 graded scratch event around the Christys Road block on Sunday.

Mixed weather conditions greeted the riders, with A and B grade competing over 35km, and C and D grade having a blow-out over 27km.

Steve Hands had the final say in A grade to take the winner’s spoils.

Hands rode the distance in 52.57.

Larry Neal and Kyle Gray put their off-season training to good use, claiming second and third places respectively.

Maddo Taylor secured victory in B grade, taking the win in a hard-fought charge to the line.

Taylor covered the course in 58.58.

Mark Summerfield took second place, with Chris Reid securing the final podium position.

C grade honours were decided by the barest of margins, with Mike Pearce taking the win from Monique Brake and Hugh Copland.

Pearce recorded a time of 46.33.

D grade was another hotly contested event, with Kayla Smith claiming the winner’s trophy, registering a time of 57.36.

Barrett reveals area the All Blacks need to work on NZ Herald From the torrent of top-spinning spiral bombs raining down on him to sweetly striking the historic match-winner, Jordie Barrett stood tall as a decisive figure for the All Blacks in their nervy victory over the Springboks.

Barrett, with adrenaline pulsing through his veins, struggled to sleep on Saturday night after slotting the 43-metre penalty to hand the All Blacks their 19-17 win in the 100th test against the Boks, a result that also secured the Rugby Championship title in Townsville.

Prior to that, though, it was a torrid outing for the All Blacks’ back three.

While Barrett embraced attempting to defuse the relentless high ball barrage, he admits the All Blacks must improve in this area before the Boks unleash another inevitable aerial assault next weekend.

Part of the examination the All Blacks’ back three confronted was not only the volume of kicks but the spin Boks halfback Faf de Klerk applied to the ball.

It’s not uncommon for first five-eighths to hoist spiral bombs – much less so for halfbacks to pull off such trickery so regularly from the base.

“I have had that before, just in moderation.

“I’ve never had that many contestable kicks to deal with in a game,” Barrett said after the All Blacks relocated to the Gold Coast where they meet the Boks on Saturday.

“It is hard to combat but it’s a challenge I was relishing. Every time they set up for a box kick I knew it was a chance to own the space in the air.

“We’ve got to find some ways to combat that, because they throw all sorts of different scenarios at us.

“It can be hard to deal with, but this week we’ve got plenty of time to come up with a plan.”

In lieu of any attack, the Boks’ steadfast commitment to kicking involved varying the placement and length.

Short kicks proved particularly difficult to counter, as it requires

those in the backfield to weave through multiple bodies in heavily congested areas before leaping for the ball.

“It’s hard enough trying to create your own space when those kicks are shorter so the positioning in the first place is crucial so you’re there early.

“You also want to generate enough pace and speed to get in the air. They do it well. They have one rocket chaser that gets in the air and disrupts and then they’ve got their big forwards waiting there to smash you as soon as you hit the ground so it is a challenge.”

Barrett, naturally, went into bat for teammate George Bridge, who shelled several high balls including one that gifted Boks wing Sbu Nkosi the response to Will Jordan’s opening try.

“It was very uncharacteristic of George. We all watch him at training every week and he literally catches everything.

“In that game a couple of minutes later he took a near impossible catch right on the sideline.

“I didn’t say too much to him, I know what he’s capable of, so it was about getting on with what’s coming. It didn’t take too long before the ball was back on his head.

We were expecting it, but we’ve got to be able to deal with it.

A truckload of ticker Matt Markham When Mid Canterbury rugby legend, Jock Ross, stood in front of the Heartland rugby team on Saturday afternoon before their match against Whanganui, few there would have realised just how important his words would be in the coming hours.

Ross, an All Black and national rugby identity, spoke to the side about playing with heart – a common denominator that’s been missing at times in recent years by those wearing the famed green and gold jersey.

Speeches like his are a dime-adozen, they happen often.

But Saturday’s one was critical.

Charged by Ross’ words, Mid Canterbury went out and produced one of their most stoic performances for a number of years, downing perennial Heartland rugby heavyweights Whanganui 24-17, to make it two-from-two to open the season, and further present their credentials as a side to watch in this year’s competition.

And the smile on the faces of the three men charged with guiding the season told it all.

“One of our themes for this week was ticker, and playing with a lot of it,” Dale Palmer said.

“It’s one thing to go out there and play with flair and score tries, but you’ve got to be able to stand up when the backs are against the wall and fight for it.

“Jock came into the sheds before the match and talked to the boys about it, and they went out there and reacted incredibly, it was a huge performance.”

You wouldn’t have called it champagne rugby.

High winds wreaked havoc across the park and at times the continuity of the match was lost through errors both with ball in hand and at the breakdown.

But man-for-man across the paddock, Mid Canterbury were better than their rivals.

They appeared to want it more, and were also ready to go deep in the hurt locker to make it happen.

Whanganui fights back

Up 10-7 at the break, after tries to Tait Chisman and Liam McCormack, they turned around in the second half, with that strong wind at their backs and looked to put a rubber stamp on the match.

They tackled, and then they tackled some more.

Turnovers were won, but there seemed to be no respite.

In that 20 minutes of attack, it seemed like the green and gold jerseys made close to 100 tackles.

So, when Whanganui levelled the scores with just a penalty after nearly 20 minutes in the second half, it was a small win for the home side – and proof that the week’s theme and the words from Ross pre-match were worth their weight in gold.

“I don’t think we could be much prouder of the way they went about that period of the match.

“They had everything thrown at them, but they kept coming up with the tackles and put pressure on the ball.

“Everyone had something to say, they really did play with a lot of heart,” said Palmer.

At 10-all with 20 to go, the match hung in the balance and could have easily gone either way.

But a turnover from the resulting kick-off following the penalty saw flanker Osian Davies break through three defenders and scoot to the line to score under the posts to grab the lead back, and all of a sudden it was Mid Canterbury with the wind at their backs, literally.

Two yellow cards, a second for Whanganui for the match and one to Raitube Vasurakuta, threatened to open the match up, and Whanganui went on the march again and were rewarded with a try under the posts.

The conversion sailed through and all of a sudden it was 17-all with four minutes to play.

Like it was against King Country a week earlier, the Mid Canterbury scrum was dominant.

Hammers’ co-captain steps up

A real tip of the hat to Jason Rickard and it was that powerhouse set piece that ultimately won them the match.

An error from Whanganui on their own 22 metre line saw Mid Canterbury set up with a decent blind, and when Seta Koroitamana bounced off the back of a scrum like a lion pouncing on its prey, they were never going to stop him as he ran around defenders and scored the match-winning try.

Importantly, it also resulted in a bonus point for four tries, meaning Mid Canterbury walked away from the match with maximum points, against one of the toughest teams in the competition.

“That’s huge,” said Palmer.

“You know there was a real self-belief that we could beat them, but to do it like that and to get the maximum is a real testament to the work these boys have put in.

“Yes, there’s work to do, but there’s always work to do and things we can do better.

“But we’re on the right track

and what we saw out there today is only going to serve to make these guys want to work that much harder.”

The side will regroup tonight and prepare for another match at home this weekend where they take on North Otago, their first match for the season against a fellow Hanan Shield side.

Keith guides Allenton team to triples victory Matt Markham Winners of the first major event on the Mid Canterbury Bowls calendar were found on Saturday.

Fresh into the new season just a couple of weeks, and this season’s sub-centre triples winners have already been crowned, with a shot at wider Canterbury glory now in the offering.

After qualifying days were held at both Methven and Allenton last weekend, just seven teams made it through to the post-section stage of the competition, which was held at Hampstead on Saturday.

And it was Allenton who laid claim to glory, with former Black Jack Sandra Keith skipping her side to success.

Keith was joined by new Allenton recruit this season, Dan Hopkins, with Donalda Watson playing off the front.

They beat the Ashburton trio of Brentton Donaldson, Gavin Eder

and Winston Lee in the final 23-7, after three rounds of post-section play.

Keith’s team were forced to fight off two teams of club-mates to make the final.

They beat Rosemary Bennett in the first round, and then beat Rowan Tonks in the second.

Donaldson’s team sat out the first round of the morning with the bye, getting a free run through to the semi-final, where they took on yet another Allenton team, this one skipped by Mat Bassett.

The Ashburton trio won 159, while Keith beat the Tonksskipped team 18-4 to set up the final.

The weekend’s play was the start of a busy few weeks on the greens around the district.

This weekend sees the qualifying for the sub centre pairs on Sunday, with both Methven and Rakaia greens in action before post-section play on Saturday, September 9 again at Hampstead.

Also this weekend is the Todd Cup open fours at Allenton which will be held on Saturday.

Locals hitting top form Matt Markham Local petanque players from the Ashburton MSA club have been to the fore in recent weeks across the South Island.

A number of players trekked up to Christchurch at the weekend to compete in the Spring Drawn Triples at the Ascot Petanque Club, and local names featured prominently across the results from the day.

Colin Jones skipped his team to success in the championship event, combining with Janet Wilkinson and Art Vernon to take victory over fellow Mid Cantabrian, Francie Osborn, who played with Ron Paterson and Peter Bray.

The plate division also saw Adair Jones in the action, finishing third.

While some players were in Christchurch on the weekend, other club members were down in Dunedin for the annual Otago Doubles.

Karen Bensdorp was in good form, finishing second in the overall competition alongside team-mate Steve Fitzgerald, while Neville Bensdrop and Richard Brown came home with

October will prove a busy month for many players, with the Canterbury Singles and the Canterbury Doubles to be held in the middle of the month with both events to be held in Ashburton.

US reclaim Ryder Cup RNZ The United States, led by a new generation, have reclaimed golf’s Ryder Cup from Europe, and heralded what could be an era of domination by the Americans at the biennial competition.

Having romped to a commanding 11-5 advantage after the foursome and fourball sessions, the Americans entered the singles needing just 3-1/2 points to get to the target needed to hoist the little gold trophy.

Collin Morikawa ended European hopes when he birdied the 17th in his match with Viktor Hovland, guaranteeing the US a deciding half-point.

The 24-year-old Ryder Cup rookie made it official a few minutes later with a par on 18 to end the match in a tie, sending a thundering chant of “USA, USA” rumbling across Whistling Straits.

“To clinch this and bring it back on home soil feels so good,” said Morikawa, one of six rookies on the 12-man US team.

“The guys pulled through; we didn’t let up.”

It was just the second time in six competitions and third in 10 that the US had claimed golf’s most coveted team title.

Never before in 42 previous Ryder Cups had a team come back from more than a four-point deficit on the final day and Padraig Harrington’s men, while defiant, never threatened to make history.

In this role, you will be responsible for supervising and running the underground electrical conversion team on-site.

To be successful in this role, you will need: • Experience in Civil Work • A Class 2 drivers licence • Supervisory experience • The ability to read and interpret plans • To have a good understanding of power / fibre requirements and specifications • A positive, team player attitude and the ability to effectively communicate to a wide variety of staff and clients • To have strong emphasis on health and safety and compliance • The ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines • The ability to operate an ipad / tablet • The ability to enhance systems where necessary

You’ll also need: • 5+ years experience in residential and commercial drainage • The ability to lead a team and work well within the team • To have a strong emphasis on health and safety • The ability to complete jobs in a timely and efficient manner • The ability to read, interpret plans and complete all paperwork and compliance required
