Mt Hutt skifield extends season Following the installation of its new 8-seater Nor’West Express chairlift and some early season snow, Mt Hutt had been on track for a record breaking season until the Alert Level 4 lockdown right in the middle of its planned 18week season.

McKenzie said that missing out on three weeks of prime peak-season skiing equated to around a 25 per cent loss of business and once they were able to resume operations under Level 2 they were considering extending the season.

Maintaining a solid base and busy days deep into spring made it an easy decision, McKenzie said, but now, as always, a big finish to the season is weather dependent.

The new closing weekend will coincide with the annual Methven Rodeo on October 24 – if the region is in Level 1 restrictions, making it a big weekend in Methven.

The Methven Rodeo committee plans to meet on Wednesday to discuss its options moving forward depending on what was announced at yesterday’s Covid restrictions update.

Jonathan Leask For the first time in 13 years there will be a chance to hit the slopes of Mt Hutt at Labour weekend.

After a disrupted season, Mt Hut Ski Area is looking to make up for lost time by extending the season out to October 25.

Mt Hutt ski area manager James McKenzie said it is the first time since 2008 the season has reached Labour weekend.

“We have good snow and have been pretty busy so it was an easy decision,” McKenzie said.

“I think some people are making up for the time on the slopes they missed, trying to get the best bang for their buck from a season pass or with travelling off the cards choosing to come up, but whatever it is we have been busy.

“The snow is there and under spring conditions it will deteriorate in parts, but we will still have plenty to offer.”

Excellent spring skiing conditions have allowed Mt Hutt Ski Area to extend its season out to October 25.

Vaccine passports might keep entertainment going The Ashburton Trust Event Centre is considering using vaccine passports to get back to full capacity.

Event centre manager Roger Farr, in his organisation’s annual report to the Ashburton District Council, said the unpredictability and uncertainty of lockdowns had created a challenge for the industry.

It had also stopped international acts from securing shows.

“We are looking into a number of initiatives that are up for discussion, including the use of a vaccine passport for entry,” Farr said.

“The focus of these initiatives must be to reassure the public that they are coming into a safe environment.

“So people’s primary concern is having an enjoyable night out without the con-

stant reminder of level restrictions.”

Farr said the unfairness of Covid-19 alert level restrictions for a venue like the event centre meant it could only seat 100 instead of the usual 500 at Alert Level 2. In comparison, shopping malls were much better off, only having an entry limit on the retail stores inside them.

“Vaccine passports give some hope that the industry is being listened to, and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.

The event centre reported an income of $839,000 in its annual report compared to $68,948 in the previous 12 months.

Farr said the increase had come from the Government’s Covid wage subsidy and other grants from the Lion Foundation and the council.

Freight hub gets the go ahead Govt invests $2m in Fairton road-rail hub Jonathan Leask Auckland’s loss is Ashburton’s gain – and local backers of the new freight hub are thrilled.

The cancellation of the proposed $785m Auckland cycling and walking bridge has had the Government divert $2m towards the towards the Fairfield Freight Hub. The cash injection means the $14 million project is now full steam ahead, with KiwiRail set to relocate its historic rail container terminal in the centre of Ashburton to the industrial area at Fairton.

The project is a joint initiative with the Fairfield Freight Hub Ltd (part of local freight business the Wareing Group), Ashburton District Council and KiwiRail.

Construction was expected to begin in early 2022 and be completed later next year. Existing freight operations would continue at KiwiRail’s current Ashburton site on West Street until the Fairfield Hub was open.

The Guardian understands that the hub would be constructed next to the Ashburton Business Estate at the existing rail siding at the former Silver Fern Farms site, which Talley’s purchased last year.

Wareing Group director Mark Wareing said the project has numerous benefits for the region.

“This project will streamline freight volumes in and out of Mid Canterbury and at the same time reduce the impact trucks and rail have in the middle of the Ashburton township, easing congestion,” Wareing said.

Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown said the Government investment had helped bring the long-awaited relocation of the rail hub to fruition.

“Council has been keen for years to see the rail hub relocate from the centre of town and while I’ve personally been working on it for the past two and a half years, there were others before me.

Walk-in clinics set to increase Adam Burns The convenience offered by walkin vaccination clinics are set to become more frequent in Mid Canterbury.

Another walk-in clinic was held at the weekend at Ashburton’s Allenton Pharmacy which attracted pedestrians off the street to line up for a vaccine.

It follows a clinic which was held in Hinds last week as Canterbury health leaders endeavour to accelerate the vaccination rates in the regions.

Vaccination rates in the Ashburton district, which have copped criticism, were again struggling along as of last week, with local numbers only a fraction of those recorded nationally.

Figures reported by the Ministry of Health suggests Ashburton as the third worst performing district in the country.

As of last week, more than 53 per cent of Mid Cantabrians had received their first dose and more than 22 per cent of the population were fully vaccinated.

About 83 people received jabs at Allenton’s four-hour clinic with no doses left over.

“We were very lucky, we had no wastage,” pharmacy owner Carolyn Cameron said.

“It was a really good (response).”

Cameron said there would be further walk-ins in the coming weeks.

“I think people are wanting to go where it’s convenient for them,” she said.

Fenz release report on fire that destroyed fire truck Jonathan Leask Six months after an Ashburton fire truck was destroyed while fighting a vegetation fire, an incident report has been released on the details of the fire.

However, a separate report is still to be released by Fire and

Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) about how the fire truck ended up being destroyed in the fire.

Under the Official Information Act the report, authored by specialist fire investigator Craig Chambers, on the vegetation fire has been released to the Guardian.

It concludes that the fire that ended up consuming the fire truck “is believed to have been a malfunction of mechanical equipment associated with the combine harvesting process”.

On March 15, Fenz was advised of a fire in a combine harvester on Stanleys Road in Dromore at 4.23pm.

Three crews from Ashburton were initially sent to scene, but another four from Pendarves, Hinds and Ashburton were sent.

In total four fire appliances and three tankers attended the incident.

The report states that on arrival of the first appliance, fire crews found a combine harvester with a small fire in it and a field of

wheat straw on fire.

When the officer in charge’s (OIC) crew had completed extinguishing the harvester, the fire appliance was repositioned to the neighbouring field to complete a fire attack on the vegetation fire.

The fire was extinguished but during the firefighting operations one fire appliance was destroyed.

Chambers was contacted at 7.31pm and he arrived on scene at 8.38am on March 16 to complete a scene examination and

interviews.

“Based on the evidence available at the time of this investigation, the classification of this incident is being recorded as accidental.

“The cause of the fire is believed to have been a malfunction of mechanical equipment associated with the combine harvesting process.”

Fenz was unable to confirm when the report on how the fire truck was destroyed will be released.

Hinds MAR site restored, expanded after flood damage Jonathan Leask A restored and expanded Hekeao Hinds Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) project was celebrated on Sunday, four months on from the damaging floods at the end of May. This project is run by the Hekeao Hinds Water Enhancement Trust (HHWET) on behalf of the Hinds Plains community recently completed its fifth year of operation.

HHWET chairman Peter Lowe said the heavy rainfall event at the end of May had the south Hinds River flowing over 200 cubic metres per second at the south Hinds MAR site causing extensive damage to the wetland, nearby native plantings and recharge basins, although the lizard habitat was untouched as it is on top of a high river bank.

After four months of remedial and enhancement repairs by contractors, HHWET trustees and volunteers, the new expanded site was celebrated at a community planting day on Sunday.

Lowe said one of the techniques being trialled at the MAR project to improve the ecosystem

health of the Hekeao Hinds River system is called Near River Recharge which involves recharging clean water in leaky basins constructed in or near the flood plain of a river system.

The water filters through the gravels and then joins the shallow groundwater or surface water of the river system.

Currently two Near River Recharge sites are in operation near the Hekeao Hinds River and another two sites are in the planning stage.

From June 2020 to May 2021, the two operational sites recharged around 5 million cubic metres of clean water which has contributed to measurable improvements in the river’s flowing reach, water quality and fish populations, Lowe said.

In addition, the south Hinds Near River Recharge site also contains a lizard rockpile habitat area under a DOC covenant and a wetland that is currently being prepared as a new home for one of New Zealand’s most rare freshwater fish species, the Kowaro (Canterbury mudfish).

Over 6000 native plants are being planted at this site and a nearby historic wetland over the next month to join two previous phases of native plantings.

The south Hinds Near River Recharge site is situated on the Gawler Downs farm owned by

Chalmers Avenue likely to get second bridge nod Adam Burns Consultants working on plans for a second bridge in Ashburton are favouring Chalmers Avenue as its preferred location.

The second phase of a strategic business case for a second urban bridge over the Ashburton River will be considered by district councillors at tomorrow’s full council meeting.

The report recommends Chalmers Avenue as the fancied location for a bridge and said it could be constructed largely off-line, reducing traffic on the highway through Ashburton.

The Stantec report, which was previously pushed back three months to apply data from the May 30-31 floods, will be presented to Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) for review and approval.

It also recommends an extension to the merge lanes at South Street and State Highway 1 intersection next year and suggested clip-on passing bays for cyclists on the existing bridge.

Several reports and proposals for a second bridge have been administered over the last 15 years.

Chalmers Avenue was first highlighted as an option amid eight other locations back in 2011.

Data from the May 30-31 flood event has been applied by Stantec in its report for a second Ashburton bridge.

Council secured land for the project three years later.

Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown said comprehensive analysis was necessary if council was to bid for financial support from the Government.

“It might seem a second bridge has been a long time in the planning, but without this detailed

level of work so far, council is highly unlikely to attract the 80 per cent funding from Government we budgeted for in our long-term plan,” he said.

The location of the long awaited project has been a highly divisive issue for the community over the years, with many in the community favouring a duplicate

bridge along State Highway 1.

Brown said the report provided “clear evidence” that Chalmers Avenue was the strongest contender.

“We know the community has debated the merits of different bridge options over the years,” he said.

The Little Mermaid Junior will still go on Maddison Gourlay The sold-out Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre show will go on this week despite remaining in Alert Level 2.

The first of their five sold-out performances of the The Little Mermaid Junior shows will take place on Friday night, with only 100 people in the audience per show due to Covid restrictions.

The cast and crew were eagerly awaiting lockdown level changes in September to enable them to do the show as planned.

Covid restrictions means the 500-seat Ashburton Trust Event Centre can only house 100 during an event.

Although the children’s theatre had hoped to perform for a larger capacity crowd at the venue, they are still thrilled they can go ahead with the show and the smaller audience numbers will not stop the group of young actors putting on their best performances over the weekend.

The set is finished and is in place on stage after a big weekend.

The set construction started back in August by Mark Brown and a small number of cast members’ parents.

The cast will continue rehearsing this week on stage preparing for the five shows this weekend.

The full cast of The Little Mermaid Junior, which debuts at The Ashburton Trust Event Centre this week.

Cancer exercise classes serving wellbeing, camaraderie benefits Prostate cancer

Adam Burns Residents in Mid Canterbury who have battled breast or prostate cancer are reaping the benefits of weekly exercise classes.

The Prosfit workout sessions for men who have battled prostate cancer have been running in Ashburton for the past three months, garnering a positive reception from participants in the process.

Now a variant for women who have confronted breast cancer has just started being trialled at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre.

The classes, which are jointly run by the Ashburton District Council and the Breast Cancer Foundation, are expected to run for the next three months.

“It was evident from the first class that this is about more than exercise,” council community services group manager Steve Fabish said.

“It’s about fellowship and friendship between people on a special journey.”

Ashburton is one of three spots in the South Island utilising the breast cancer classes for their respective communities, alongside Christchurch and Invercargill.

For the men’s classes, attendee Don Hopwood said he had noticed significant gains physically and mentally.

“My balance has improved greatly since I’ve been here.

“There’s great camaraderie also.”

John Waugh, who was treated for prostate cancer 20 years ago, said keeping fit and healthy remained hugely important to him.

Pelvic exercises also catered specifically to the challenges endured by prostate sufferers such as bladder control.

At yesterday’s class, instructor Luke MacKay took about nine participants through a series of balance, weight, pull rope exercises, soundtracked by a playlist of “seventies classics”.

“A lot of people in our age group from 70 onward get into the retirement mode and don’t exercise as well as they should,” he said.

“There’s certainly benefits.

“I feel in myself I’m a lot more alert . . . and you’re just more aware of yourself.”

Wind-damaged trees to be removed Contractors are starting a big clean-up job at the Methven Cemetery today after significant tree damage during last month’s big winds.

The Ashburton District Council manages the cemetery and community services group manager Steve Fabish said the tree clearing work is expected to continue until October 11.

“It’s a big job and the contractor is removing wind-damaged trees and others that have been left vulnerable,” Fabish said.

“Most of the damage is on the eastern side and while the contractors have their heavy machinery in there, we will also clear some trees at the northern end of the cemetery.

“These trees shade the area and create a negative impact on the space.”

Trees at the Methven-Chertsey Road cemetery entrance will be retained though individual trees

identified as unstable or dangerous will be removed.

Fabish said removing the trees would allow ground to be prepared for future cemetery plots.

“Further work will be needed to remove stumps and slash that the logging operations will generate, and the walkway that runs by the end of the cemetery will be reinstated once the felling operation is complete.”

Members of the public are asked to stay away from the cemetery while trees are removed, though works will stop to allow for burials.

Methven’s cemetery has burial records going back to 1883 and the council is also collaborating with the Methven Lions Club to clean up some of the older headstones, which have been overtaken by lichen and moss.

Local contractor Harmer Earthmoving will be undertaking the tree-clearing operation.

Anzco Seafield switches coal for cleaner electricity

Anzco Foods’ Canterbury site at Seafield is one of several export meat processing plants in Canterbury given government funding to reduce their carbon footprint by switching boilers from coal to electricity.

The Seafield move is being brought forward four years after receiving support from the Government investment in decarbonisation industry (GIDI) fund, a partnership between Government and business to fast-track decarbonising industrial process heat, as well as contributing to the Covid-19 recovery by stimulating the economy and supporting employment.

Silver Fern Farms’ Pareora processing site, south of Timaru, and Alliance Group’s Smithfield plant at Timaru have also received funding to switch from coal.

Anzco Foods has received part-funding to install a high-temperature heat pump to replace coal-fired boiler-generated hot water at its Canterbury site.

Anzco Foods chief executive Peter Conley said the company was committed to reducing its carbon footprint and the co-funding of its first high-temperature heat pump will help speed up its decarbonising process.

“Transitioning away from coal to electricity requires significant capital investment. The GIDI Funding has provided around a third of the total cost of the project which has allowed Anzco Foods to bring forward this investment by four years. In addition, it will mean Anzco can evaluate and install this technology across its other New Zealand op-

erational sites earlier than initially planned.”

The new 1MW high-temperature heat pump on the beef refrigeration system will provide energy-efficient hot water generation for processing at the Anzco Canterbury beef processing plant and replaces the need for coal-fired boiler-generated hot water.

The new high-temperature heat pump will reduce the emissions associated with the beef processing of plant hot water generation

by 2930 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) a year, accounting for 13 per cent of the site’s entire stationary emissions footprint and reduce coal use by 17 per cent.

The new high-temperature heat pump will be installed by the end of this year and will be operating by January 2022.

“Anzco Foods Canterbury is the company’s largest processing site with the biggest footprint, so it’s also the site where we can make the biggest impact,” Conley said.

“Earlier this year, our Anzco Foods Canterbury site reinstated retired electric boilers resulting in a shift from coal to electricity.

“These two decarbonisation projects will see the site transition from coal to electricity, removing about 4200t of coal and 8500t of carbon a year, with additional electricity usage of 15GWH. “Anzco Foods employs nearly 3000 people in mainly rural New Zealand in its seven processing sites and two manufacturing op-

erations. Decarbonising our sites will contribute to future-proofing our sites which helps secure regional employment which in turn also stimulates local economies,” Conley said.

Silver Fern Farms received $1 million co-funding from the GIDI fund for a $2.6m coal-out project at Pareora, as a significant boost to achieve the company’s commitment to end all coal use by 2030.

The Pareora heat-pump conversion project is the company’s third successful project under the GIDI fund.

Silver Fern Farms’ chief executive Simon Limmer said it was committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the company’s value chain.

Alliance Group said decarbonisation projects at three of its South Island processing plants was a major boost to its goal of reducing its carbon footprint.

Alliance Group and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) will co-fund the projects at the co-operative’s Lorneville and Mataura plants in Southland and at Smithfield plant in Timaru. Together, the plants employ about 3000 people at peak season.

At Smithfield, Alliance will capture waste heat from the refrigeration plant to replace coal use for process heat, saving 3811t of carbon per annum.

Irrigation schemes’ consents renewed for another 10 years Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation Limited

Heather Chalmers All of Mid Canterbury’s big three irrigation schemes have now had their consents renewed for another 10 years.

The last to be confirmed was Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation (BCI) last month, with MHV Water and Ashburton Lyndhurst Irrigation approved earlier this year.

While not required to be publicly notified, all three irrigation scheme applications were limited notified to Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu in relation to potential effects on the Hakatere Ashburton River.

In September, the independent hearing commissioner released its decision to grant BCI two applications, one for the Hekeao Hinds Plains area, and one for the Ashburton-Rakaia area, subject to conditions. As BCI’s command area of 24,000 hectares straddles two planning zones, it required two applications.

BCI conditions include a 15 per cent reduction in nitrogen losses from a baseline of good management practice by 2025 and 25 per cent in the Hekeao Hinds Plains area and 30 per cent in the Ashburton-Rakaia area by 2030.

This includes a legally binding requirement on shareholders to achieve these reductions as part of their water supply agreement with the scheme.

Farmers managed by the scheme must have comprehensive and audited farm environment plans and the scheme must monitor ground and surface water quality to ensure no further deterioration, and if deterioration is detected to implement a remediation and response plan to further reduce nitrogen inputs.

If any remediation and response plan fails to achieve im-

provements, Environment Canterbury may review the consent.

The scheme must also protect community drinking water supplies.

MHV Water delivers water and manages the environmental compliance for about 58,000 hectares of farmland in the Hekeao Hinds plains, while Ashburton Lyndhurst Irrigation covers 30,000ha.

Mycoplasma bovis: New spring case A Mid Canterbury dairy farm has been confirmed with cattle disease mycoplasma bovis.

The farm was detected through August screening of bulk tank milk, the Ministry for Primary Industries said.

An MPI spokesperson said it was not unexpected to find further infected properties in spring, with animals under stress from calving, and 2019-

born heifers joining the milking platform, contributing to bulk tank milk for the first time.

“This tool plays an important role in looking for infection, outside the network of infected farms we’ve traced from investigating recorded animal movements through NAIT and other farm records.”

Since then, 267 properties have been cleared and 172,498 cattle culled in a national bid to eradicate the disease.

Up until the end of August, $451.9 million has been spent on operational costs since the start of the response in July 2017.

This includes all programme operational costs, including

(but not limited to) testing, onfarm operational costs, building leases, transport, capital expenditure, contractors (including AsureQuality), staff salaries, technology and information management and costs spent on the response prior to the decision to eradicate.

In addition, a further $210.9m in compensation has been paid to farmers to date.

Synlait launch reusable stainless steel milk bottles It is a step back to the days of returning empty milk bottles, but with a twist.

The bottles are made from stainless steel, rather than glass.

The bottles are the first consumer foods product to be launched by Synlait Milk under its own brand – Synlait Swappa Bottle.

Synlait Swappa Bottle is a 1.5 litre reusable, stainless steel bottle of homogenised milk exclusively sourced from Synlait’s highest performing farms supplying its Dunsandel factory.

The Synlait Swappa Bottle concept is simple – drink, return, repeat. Consumers purchase a Synlait Swappa Bottle and enjoy quality fresh milk.

They then return the empty bottle and lid to the store, helping Synlait to reduce waste and eliminating plastic packaging.

Synlait director sustainability and brand Hamish Reid said New Zealanders have been telling the company for years that they are deeply concerned about plastic waste, but in milk, there haven’t been many options.

When people finish a plastic milk bottle, they hope it will be recycled, but this was not always the case.

Synlait Swappa Bottles are initially being launched in two South Island New World stores (Ilam and Fendalton in Christchurch), with plans to widen distribution over time.

milk, only paying for the milk when returning the bottle on subsequent visits to the supermarket.

The Swappa Bottle contains standard homogenised milk exclusively sourced from Synlait’s Lead with Pride certified farms which have met quality assurance standards.

Synlait has signalled its intention to move closer to the consumer for some time, marked by its acquisition of Dairyworks in 2019.

Reid said there was an opportunity for reusables to play a much bigger role in New Zealanders’ food and beverage future, as they are already in Europe and the United States.

Water entity concerns run too deep

Federated Farmers joins the many council elected representatives and citizens up and down the country urging the Government to go back to the drawing board on reform of three waters delivery.

Federated Farmers president Andrew Hoggard says while it’s clear that billions of dollars of investment are needed to get drinking water, stormwater, and sewerage infrastructure up to scratch, “there are too many flaws and question marks over the proposed four new mega

entities for the Government to just press ahead”.

A range of deep concerns with the proposed model have been raised in the provinces, chief among them the risk rural voices and needs will be swamped in the enlarged set-ups, Hoggard said.

“Right now, we have a direct say in the appropriate level of investment and priorities for water infrastructure via our local council.

“If our elected representatives don’t deliver, we can eject them at election time – and they know it. That accountability is significantly watered down with the arms-length governance arrangements now proposed.

“Councils and iwi get to appoint a panel, which in turn appoints another panel, which selects members of an unelected board.”

The complexity of rural water scheme ownership and operations is creating uncertainty in many rural communities and the role of Taumata Arowai and the water service entities needs to be clarified.

Serious questions have also been asked about the estimated costs and benefits of larger water authorities.

“Experience has shown bigger is not always better,” Hoggard said.

While it’s also true that turkeys don’t vote for Christmas, and some councils and councillors might have an eye on their future existence if water services are removed from their purview, Federated Farmers argues the government’s local government, Resource Management Act and three waters reforms are back to front.

“The three waters and RMA

reforms should be parked until after the Government’s current Review into the Future of Local Government.

“Advancing these huge and costly reforms prior to this review is like putting the cart before the horse.”

September 30 was the deadline for councils to give feedback on what changes would need to be made to the three waters model for them to ‘opt in’.

“Patently, with indications more than three quarters of councils are against or deeply concerned by the proposals, it would be extremely unwise and unfair for the government to make them mandatory.

“New Zealanders need and deserve the time to debate these crucial water services issues.

“There is no case for rushing ahead and hoping for the best,” Hoggard said.

Time to give Fozzie a helping hand

O

h, dear. Another below-par All Blacks’ showing and this time an injury time 31-29 loss to South Africa resulted.

Cue a nervous rugby-loving nation, talkback radio running hot, watercooler chat dissecting the whys and what now.

Of course, there’s no need for real panic after an injury time, two-point loss, but if the All Blacks are honest they would know they were simply hanging on for most of the second half in the Gold Coast on Saturday night.

They were largely beaten up at the tackle and a bruising South African pack outpointed them big time in the scrums and lineout.

That the All Blacks got as close as they did, said much about their resilience more than anything.

But, like every All Blacks’ defeat, and successive average displays at that, there are questions and thoughts aplenty. Here’s a view to

Daryl Holden ponder after the first 10 tests this season: • If New Zealand Rugby had waited until the end of the year to confirm Ian “Fozzie’’ Foster as head All Blacks’ coach through to the 2023 World Cup, do you think he would still get the nod? Or would NZR officials be turning up at Sumner Beach in December to have a chat with Scott Robertson in between daily surfing rides?

• Is there any doubt that the All Blacks’ key players are halfback Aaron Smith and lock Sam Whitelock, whose absence was telling against South Africa?

• How do we keep both of those

players, who will be 34 at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, in top physical condition and at the peak of their powers?

• Is there also any doubt that Brad Weber, and not TJ Perenara, is surely the number two halfback in the country behind Smith?

• What difference could young Highlanders’ number nine Folau Fakatava provide the ABs once he meets eligibility requirements and recovers from a full ACL tear in his right knee?

The 21-year-old blew his knee apart after playing a starring role in his team’s stunning Super Rugby win over the Crusaders in April. At that stage, he looked a certainty to be named in the All Blacks.

• What on earth is wrong with our lineout?

• Anyone else have concerns that lock Scott Barrett and perhaps even hooker Codie Taylor,

though good players internationally, may not be true world class performers against the very best teams and when the heat is really on? Ditto David Havili.

• Who else thought the decision to play Anton Lienert-Brown on Saturday backfired? He was well below his sharpest best after being out for some time.

• Referee Mathew Carley frustratingly seemed as blind as the nearest bat to the constant and often illegal work of the Springboks’ tacklers not releasing the ball carrier on Saturday. But is he to blame or are the laws the problem? Clearly, the laws are still too complex, with too many grey areas and no consistency about how they are applied.

• Ardie Savea, along with Jordie Barrett, was outstanding on Saturday. But I’m not convinced Savea is a tactically astute captain.

He certainly doesn’t have that

Whitelock, Smith or Richie McCaw ability to “work’’ the referees.

• What’s the point of having Damian McKenzie in the reserves and having to play him on the right wing in the closing stages of a test, as he did on Saturday?

Surely the All Blacks would be better off with another midfield/ wing option on the bench.

• Who should be at blindside?

Akira Ioane and Shannon Frizell are the obvious options because they’re big, powerful men, though both drift in and out of games.

Alternatively, could we afford to play a loose forward trio lacking in the collective size of Ethan Blackadder, Sam Cane and Savea?

• What is the All Blacks’ plan B strategy if their razzle-dazzle, attacking game falls apart and they can’t resolve their lineout issues and get pinned in their own half?

Growing skills, green fingers O

ver the past few weeks, I have been passing on a few skills to Maddy and I’m hoping they strike a note with her and it’s something she will continue to carry on doing long after I’m six feet under.

Six feet under segues me nicely to the skills I have been sharing. Vege gardening. Yep, Maddy and I have been busy planting out our vege garden in what’s left of the greenhouse.

It would be factually incorrect for me to continue to label the structure a greenhouse as it no longer has a front or back door. To be completely honest it doesn’t have a front or back wall. Let’s call it the green arch from now.

Doing little bits at a time works well for both our attention spans.

I had a small mental battle with myself as I was planting the lettuce. What’s the point of doing this? When they are ready to eat, I’ll be able to purchase one at the grocery shop for 99 cents.

The point is, the shop-bought one won’t taste anywhere near as good as the one picked fresh from the garden or be as good for us.

And I’m hoping the act of growing it and harvesting it will inspire Maddy to scoff into it.

We have planted broccoli, carrots, silver beet and lettuce.

We have a couple of courgette seeds and heaps of corn seeds planted in egg cartons.

Hopefully these will sprout any day now and when they are

We also have three tomato plants growing out the bottom of buckets.

I punched a hole in the middle of the bottom of the buckets and then cut out towards the side of the bucket.

The bottom of the bucket looks like a quartered pie with a hole in the middle of it.

I then push the roots of the plant into the bucket via the bottom. I then put plenty of dirt and compost in the bucket for the roots to grow up into.

This is the part of the column where I’d like to say I have done this plenty of times before, and it works great, but this is the first time I have tried it with buckets.

Hopefully I’ll have huge, dirtfree tomatoes hanging in no time.

Otherwise, I’ll just kick the bucket to the curb.

From six feet under to kicking the bucket, this has turned out a rather grave column.

LETTERS Entitled youth In response to debate-making Ashburton councillor comments from Lynette Lovett and Rodger Letham about “entitled youth’’ and the issue of unemployed 16 to 24-year-olds not being a matter for local Government, former mayor Donna Favel makes the following points in her abridged letter: I have recruited, trained and mentored young people in Australia, USA and New Zealand. Our business has employed young people for over 20 years, many of whom have left the district to pursue a diverse range of opportunities and are now residing across New Zealand and the world.

The 2020 school leavers were the first in over 100 years to complete their education during a global pandemic. They are entering a workforce where opportunities are being redefined and the world is in a state of flux.

Even with my five decades of life experiences, Covid-19 has been challenging and I am in awe at the way many, but not all young people, are coping with these tumultuous times.

The initial Ashburton Guardian article reported that councillor Rodger Letham stated it (unemployed youth issue) was not a matter for local Government.

The Local Government Act defines the purpose of local Government as: “To promote the social, economic, environmental, and cultural well-being of communities in the present and for the future”.

It is legislated in the act and absolutely is a matter for local Government.

They say it takes a village to raise a child. Our village has many kind generous groups and volunteers, who are exceptional in supporting others.

However, recent comments and articles read as though it is not extended to all.

I do wish it could be.

Three Waters Councillor Wilson ‘misses the point’ in Three Waters remarks Stuart Wilson is correct when he says that “just because you’re a different colour doesn’t mean to say that you can’t discuss something intelligently”.

But he completely misses the point when it comes to the proposed representation on the Three Waters entity.

I’d suggest his rounding down of the 10 per cent Maori population in our district to 5 per cent probably belies his intent.

The representation model is the routine fulfilment of promises made in one of our key founding documents, which was also enshrined in the Local Government Act. As a long-term councillor, councillor Wilson is well aware of this.

Unfortunately, a number of Ashburton councillors have form in this area.

In 2018, whilst finalising their surface water strategy, (the) council came close to removing the single reference to a Maori concept – kaitiakitanga – from

this 40-plus page document.

The following year, under councillor Wilson’s chairmanship, (the) council deliberately excluded iwi and other environmental groups from representation on a governing group for stock water. Then, as now, council chief executive Hamish Riach had to remind them of their Treaty obligations and the move was subsequently reversed.

If councillors won’t accept and adhere to the Local Government Act, they deserve to be removed.

For the Government to bow down to appointed officials and not only invent the use of “partnership” in the Treaty for interests of governance and policy making for all New Zealanders, is precious and liberal in the extreme.

Any entity created under the Government banner will not only be undemocratic, but will be top-heavy with another layer of nanny state expected to return a dividend to the Government for something that has already been paid for.

Our democracy is definitely under attack from the new woke revolution that is sweeping western society and threatening all history and development that has taken centuries to build.

This council needs more councillors of councillor Wilson and

Lovett’s strength to bring some sanity to decision making.

Thank goodness for people like Stuart Wilson.

This Government is wanting basically to nationalise New Zealand’s water where it will become top-heavy with civil servants costing the taxpayers a fortune.

History will prove that this Government has done more to racially divide New Zealand than any other Government in history.

The time has come for the South Island, which produces tremendous wealth for New Zealand, to become independent, and let the Aucklanders start to fend for themselves.

That will not alter the obvious fact that he has the support of the vast majority of Ashburton residents, who understand that his comments are not racist, but part

of the tradition of democracy that this country so rightly prides itself on and is built on.

Just because someone makes a comment of idealism, fairness, and objectivity, that differentiates between ethnicities and challenges new age PC doctrine, does not make them racist nor radical.

Rather pragmatist analyst commentators, and community leaders who peddle opinion advocating simplicity, rationality, and fairness are only stating what should be obvious to all.

Five per cent ethnicity of the population should not have 50 per cent influence.

Five per cent of the population should have five per cent of sway.

It’s called par, equivalence, justness.

It could even be known to be parity. Like, equality.

White signals his intent for spring racing Matt Markham Ashburton horseman, Brent White, laid bare his intentions for the upcoming spring feature action with a winning double at the first premier meeting of the new season on Friday night.

The Ashburton Racecoursebased trainer took three horses to Friday’s Addington meeting and brought two winners home back in the float with him, each as impressive as the other.

Three-year-old filly, Mabalene kicked off the night with a bold front-running display to win a strong R55 to R58 mobile event.

The daughter of American Ideal burst to the lead out of the gate and never looked back for Stephen McNally, cutting out some strong sectionals as she held all her rivals at bay to win impressively.

A winner of three of her nine career starts, Mabalene looks to have a breadth of options available in the coming months as she continues to work through the grades, with Friday night’s victory signalling that she’s a horse who will win a fair few more races before the season ends.

An hour later, White’s colours were back in the winners’ circle when Cranbourne showed his toughness to win a strong lower-grade race. The New Zealand Trotting Cup nominee should

see a bump up the rankings for the Cup on the basis of his win as he beat a number of Cup contenders in the process.

Away safely from the standing start, McNally managed to lob the perfect trip for the big pacer, and he unwound down centre track to get up just in the shadows of the post.

Cranbourne has now won eight of his 21 career starts – six of them coming in the past 14 months with more than $85,000 in the bank.

The Mid Canterbury run over the weekend didn’t just end at Addington.

Barrhill trainer Michael Heenan provided one of the biggest upset winners of the weekend at Timaru on Sunday, when Reindeer Trouble won the maiden trot in the hands of Ricky May. The four-year-old mare by Heenan’s resident stallion, Superfast Stuart, had shown little in her five previous starts to the races, but trotted perfectly on

Sunday to win by a neck, rocking punters with her $40 win price.

Gerard O’Reilly also found his way into the winners’ circle at the meeting, saluting with the consistent Brother John for Geoff and James Dunn.

Taking luck out of the equation, O’Reilly sent the gelding forward from the outset and never looked back, running their rivals off their feet to win by two and three quarter lengths.

Hot shots to miss the Methven Cup None of the big guns of this year’s New Zealand Trotting Cup have chosen the Methven Cup this weekend as one of their stepping stones toward the great race.

Nominations for Sunday’s meeting, which is set to be held at the Orari Racecourse near Geraldine, were released yesterday, with 10 horses nominated for the $30,000 Group Three event.

While none of the leading contenders for this year’s Cup are going to be in attendance, nine of the ten nominations are also included in the nominations for the second Tuesday in November.

This year’s Methven Cup field will be headed by class mare Stylish Memphis and Vintage Cheddar.

Both currently sit inside the top 15 on the rankings for the New Zealand Cup, but a number of their rivals are nipping at their heels, looking to break into the field as well.

In-form trainers Robert and Jenna Dunn have four horses nominated; Franco Niven, Matt Damon, Steel The Show and Somekindawonderful, while Mark Jones has two runners set to take their place with Stylish Memphis joined by Plutonium Lady.

There’s a North Island flavour to the race with the Cambridge trained Kango among nominations as he looks to work his way up the rankings after arriving in the South Island last week.

Away from the Cup, nominations for Sunday’s meeting numbered 210 yesterday with a minimum of 10 races set to be held across the day.

The meeting is being held at Orari while repairs are made to the Methven track following last month’s high winds which caused significant damage to the track and grounds at the Mt Harding Racecourse.

Vermont back into winners’ circle Matt Markham Back in April, Ashburton trainers Sarah and Matt Smith put their grey galloper, Vermont, on notice.

It was time to shape up, or there was a potential ship out scenario in the mix.

Matt Smith was pretty frank in his assessment of the mare heading into that weekend’s racing, that she needed to start showing something to the pair soon to warrant continuing with her.

Almost as though she’d read her co-trainers mind, Vermont stepped out that weekend and ran a bold second – showing that she wasn’t quite just fin-

ished yet, before going on to run second at her next two starts as well.

But victory still eluded her – that was until Saturday.

The daughter of Mastercraftsman put in an outstanding gallop to win the fourth race of her career, at Riccarton, on a big day of racing, working from well off the speed to wear down her rivals in the run to the line to win under Corey Campbell.

Nominated for the New Zealand Galloping Cup in November, but unlikely to actually line up in that race, Vermont showed on Saturday that there’s still plenty left in the tank, and that the will to win is there, as she had to fight off multiple challenges up the straight to hold on her half a head victory at odds of almost $25-toone.

netting her connections more than $26,000 along the way.

Her win on Saturday also continued a standout run for the

They’ve lined horses up on four occasions since the season began and have won at all four meetings with three minor placings as well. They currently sit inside the top 20 trainers in New Zealand after the first two months of the season with a solid strike-rate too.

Meanwhile, later in Saturday’s programme, former New Zealand Cup winner Dee And Gee kicked off a new campaign in grand style for Mayfield trainer, Peter Corbett when winning the open handicap 2000m event.

The grand stayer wound up beautifully inside the final furlong of the race to claim the win under Tegan Newman at $35-toone as he builds toward a tilt at the great race next month.

Aorangi golfers go oh-so-close Matt Markham A group of Aorangi golfers came within a whisker of claiming South Island supremacy at the weekend.

A six-strong team of Aorangi golfers travelled to Christchurch for the South Island Men’s Masters Interprovincial for 2021 and nearly walked away with the spoils, finishing just one individual win off competition winners Otago in a fiercely competitive event.

Playing at the Waitikiri Golf Club in Parklands, Christchurch, the Aorangi group were solid throughout the weekend’s four rounds of play from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon.

Points were awarded for overall victory against each region while individual wins were kept to determine any shared points scorers at the end of the competition.

The Aorangi six, Owen Miller, John Smitheram, Regan Stills, Nigel Heney, Blair Franklin and Jeff Hewitt, finished on the same competition points as Otago, but missed out on the title by one individual victory.

On Saturday they took on both Otago and Southland on the opening day of the competition.

It was a steady if unspectacular start for the side, who picked up three and a half wins from the six matches in the morning before claiming three in the afternoon. They won five of the six individual matches against Southland to claim their first competition

Nelson’s trip a winning one Timaru paracyclist Jono Nelson made his trip north a memorable one, taking victory in the Tinwald Cycling Club’s, Ashburton Contracting Limited, Small Business Accounting, 32km handicap event around the Wakanui Beach block on Sunday.

Starting off the front mark, Nelson set about his work to keep the chasing bunches at bay, holding on strongly to take the win by 45 seconds.

Sam Baltrop showed he will be one to watch, producing a top shelf ride to see him beat in a strong trio of riders to take the second place spoils. Gareth Lewis continued his good form to secure the final podium spot.

Another newcomer, Ben Knights, posted a great ride to take fourth place, while Charlotte Cox turned back the clock, producing a solid effort to record fifth place.

Mike Pearce laid down an eye-catching effort, coming from the middle marks to take sixth place.

Kyle Gray showed he will take some beating this year, recording the fastest time, riding the course in 43.59. Larry Neal and Michael Templeton secured second and third times respectively.

The juniors and division 2 contested a 16km handicap event.

Isabella Inglis put her winter racing to good use to take the win and lift the major spoils.

Thomas Stevenson dug deep off the front mark to hold on strongly to secure second place.

Sarah Gould will be happy with her day’s work, riding hard to nab third place.

Scratch marker Mitch Brookland took fastest time honours, riding the distance in 23.32.

Janette Hooper had the final say in Division 2 to take the win and fastest time honours from Brian Ellis, and Merv Grewar.

Next week the club will contest a 38km handicap event on the Wakanui-Hakatere course.

Women’s basketball under way Matt Markham

Competitive local basketball returns to the Mid Canterbury courts this week.

The Basketball Mid Canterbury women’s grade competition begins tonight at the EA Networks Centre with six teams vying for bragging rights as the best local team.

The competition offers something a little more competitive for the slightly more serious women players around the district with a mixture of ages and abilities. As was the case with the Men’s competition this year, the Ashburton College team has been split up and spread among the six rosters for the competition.

Tonight’s opening round falls under Alert Level 2 restrictions meaning no spectators are allowed in to watch the action on the court – with only direct team contacts able to attend the night’s play.

This year’s competition is made up of FKW, Basketbrawlers, Oldies But Goodies, Bricklayers, Summer’s Team and Pass The A.F. The competition officially begins with the first match-up of the season between FKW and Basketbrawlers and also Oldies But Goodies and Bricklayers at 6.15pm before Summer’s Team and Pass The A.F play the late game of the night at 7.30pm.

SWIMMING

King gains nomination at Canterbury awards Matt Markham One of Mid Canterbury’s finest swimmer, Hannah King, has been named as a finalist in this year’s Swimming Canterbury West Coast annual awards.

King, who has had a standout year in the pool, is one of three finalists in the Female Swimmer of the Year 15 and under category, joining another swimmer with strong ties to Mid Canterbury, Hope Chmiel, and Brooke Bennett.

King has been all around the action across New Zealand this year, with her crowning glory coming at the New Zealand Age Group Championships in Wellington back in April, where she won the 200-metre breaststroke final.

It was a remarkable effort from the 15-year-old, who only finished fourth in her heat, but then went on to obliterate the clock in the final to set a new personal best time by more than seven seconds, as she took out the final to be crowned a national champion.

Hammers hit the wall Matt Markham Back to the drawing board. And then, start again.

That’s the Mid Canterbury approach to this week, after a shock third round defeat to Hanan Shield bedfellows North Otago on Saturday in the Heartland Championship.

With two wins from two matches to open the competition, the Hammers sat pretty near the top of the standings on Saturday morning, but by Saturday evening their position became precarious as North Otago out-passioned and outplayed them to win 32-20 during the afternoon.

Form pundits suggested it should have been easy competition points for Mid Canterbury, especially after their win over Whanganui a week earlier, but from the very first whistle it was evident the Old Golds were in Ashburton to play.

They took Mid Canterbury apart, and disabled many aspects of their game structure that had been so good in the opening two weeks, before exposing frailties and making the most of the opportunities.

Mid Canterbury certainly didn’t help themselves.

They looked off from the outset – a few key changes to the starting line-up perhaps causing more disruption than anyone will probably care to admit.

Irrelevant of who was on the paddock, the Mid Canterbury team that played North Otago was about ten levels down on the side that played Whanganui the week before.

While co-coach Dale Palmer restlessly paced the sidelines, his fellow coaches Jason Rickard and Sean Cuttance painted a solemn picture up in the stands and the frustration didn’t end when the final whistle blew.

“Where do you start?” Palmer said after the match when asked to dissect what went wrong.

“It’s a bit of a wake-up call, that’s for sure, there might have been a few guys there thinking that they could just show up on Saturday and do what they’ve been doing.

“Complacency was definitely an issue out there and it showed, almost right from the outset.”

Despite a lacklustre start, it was Mid Canterbury who opened the scoring with a penalty to George Williams, but that was their lot for the first 25 minutes.

North Otago on the other hand were hungry.

They operated a lightning-quick defensive line that got up in the face of the Mid Canterbury attackers and did so with numbers, getting over the ball and creating consistent turnovers at the breakdown that halted any momentum the home side were starting to gain.

“They put a lot of pressure on us, they were quick off the line and really hungry when the ball was on the ground, and we were guilty of not protecting it well enough and not protecting the ball carrier.

“But there were a lot of mistakes too, we made some bad decisions and had a lot of unforced errors which all counted towards the result.”

Down 3-17 after almost 30 minutes, Mid Canterbury finally broke through, with Seta Koroitamana finding a gap and bursting through it, but North Otago bounced back again to score their third try, and the two sides went to the break with the visitors up 8-24.

Any hopes of a miraculous turnaround in the second half looked slim as North Otago extended their lead to 32-8 after the first 15 minutes of the second half.

But a try to Adam Williamson out wide and then another to Raitube Vasurakuta 10 minutes later gave a small glimpse of a Mid Canterbury fightback, but North Otago – to their credit – played the last 10 minutes incredibly well to ensure the win, and arguably more importantly, deny Mid Canterbury two bonus points for four tries and finishing within seven points.

And so now, there’s some work to be done.

A little soul-searching will take place at training this week.

“We’ve got a lot to talk about and a lot to think about too,” Palmer said.

“In this competition, the way it is this year, it puts a lot of pressure on us, if we lose another game, we can almost say good bye to the Meads Cup, but perhaps the only hope is that the result acts

as a motivation for the next few weeks to get things on track.”

While North Otago dominated across the board and there were very few highlights for the green and gold machine to get excited about, again the forwards toiled hard with Adam Williamson, Callum Burrell and Manasa Bari again turning in massive shifts up front.

The loss of JJ Manning, Tom Reekie and Nick Foxley during the week for various reasons certainly didn’t help the cause, but there’s hope that they may return to the fray in the coming weeks.

Mid Canterbury this week head to Masterton to take on Wairarapa Bush, and while they are yet to get a win on the board, you can almost guarantee there won’t be a single thought about Saturday being an easy week on the paddock.

ABs build towards France 2023 RNZ

A fearsome haka wasn’t enough to get the All Blacks up for the game.

All Blacks coach Ian Foster said he has more immediate concerns than the next Rugby World Cup, but believes his All Blacks have learned lessons from the Rugby Championship that can be used in France in 2023.

The All Blacks finished the competition on Saturday with a narrow 31-29 loss at the hands of South Africa on the Gold Coast, with the defeat seeing New Zealand cede the number one ranking in world rugby back to the Springboks.

“Have we learnt anything that will hold us in good stead for 2023? I think so,” said Foster, whose side had clinched The Rugby Championship title last weekend.

“We’ve spent good time together, we’ve learned how to manage the ups and downs of different schedules, different travel routines than we would normally have.

“We’ve had to adapt and adjust and often you get that at World Cups.

“We’ve got an eye on that, but it’s only one eye and the thing I love about the international game is that you can’t really look too far forward than what’s happening next week.

“We just love the moment, we’re trying to take steps to grow in our game and I think if you look at the last four to five months we’ve made some good steps.”

The All Blacks will take a short break in Australia as pandemic restrictions mean they cannot return to New Zealand before embarking on a four-match stint in the northern hemisphere.

New Zealand travel to Washington to face the United States on October 23 before moving to Europe for test matches against Italy, Ireland and France.

“We’re looking forward to going on our northern hemisphere tour and we’re going to play some different teams again that we haven’t played for a couple of years, their style,” Foster said.

There have been “some great learning moments for us but at

the same time we want to go out there and win”, he said.

“One way to get ready for a World Cup is to build confidence through building your game and winning big games.

“That’s where tonight will be gold for us.”

Call-up for Lord Young Taranaki and Chiefs lock Josh Lord has been called into the All Blacks squad for the end of year to the USA and Europe. The 20-year-old, who only made his Super Rugby debut earlier this year, comes in as locks Scott Barrett and Patrick Tuipulotu return to New Zealand for family reasons. Lord gets his call-up as senior players Sam Cane, Samuel Whitelock, Dane Coles and Shannon Frizell rejoin the fray, with all four to link up with squad in the Northern Hemisphere.

SPORTS RESULTS Run and Walk Ashburton

On Saturday a Run and Walk Ashburton team took part in the 81st annual Takahe to Akaroa relay. This is an 8-lap road relay that starts at the sign of the Takahe and finishes at the Akaroa domain. Runners complete laps of distances ranging from 6.8 km to 10.7 km, with terrain from flat to undulating to uphill and downhill.

The race was to have been the National Championships but with Covid restrictions only teams from Canterbury were able to take part. Despite this there was an excellent turnout of 92 teams. Ashburton competed in the Masters Mens B section and finished a creditable sixth place out of 12 teams in 6 hours 43 minutes 30 seconds.

Heartland return for Sam Cane?

Sam Cane hopes to make his long-awaited comeback this weekend with a rare grassroots appearance but he will not immediately regain the All Blacks captaincy when he re-joins the team for their northern tour.

Cane has not donned the boots since undergoing surgery to repair the pectoral injury he suffered playing for the Chiefs in March.

He was due to make his comeback in the NPC with Bay of Plenty, having trained with them in recent weeks, but with his local province on a bye this weekend, Cane is instead eyeing a surprise Heartland Championship match to make his return.

Turning out for King Country against Whanganui in Taupo this weekend is the obvious team for Cane to represent, but that situation was complicated when much of the Waikato was plunged into alert Level 3 after community Covid-19 cases were found in Hamilton east and Raglan.

Former Chiefs hooker Hika Elliot is the last player picked from the Heartland Championship for the All Blacks after playing for Poverty Bay in 2014.

All Blacks coach Ian Foster remains hopeful Cane can get a hit out this weekend before flying out next Thursday to meet the squad in Washington DC, where the All Blacks begin their five-match northern tour with a money-spinning test against the USA. They then progress to play Wales, Italy, Ireland and France.

“We’re looking around to see if he might be available to play a game of Heartland rugby,” Foster said on Monday.

“I’m not sure on the latest on that, but he’s desperate to do that.

“We’ll see how the bureaucratic cogs chug their way through that one.”

Sam Whitelock and Dane Coles, the latter absent since the second test against Fiji in July with a calf strain, are due to play for Canterbury and Wellington on Friday night before joining Cane, Highlanders loose forward Shannon Frizell and 20-year-old Chiefs lock Josh Lord on the plane to Washington DC. Lord was called up as a bolter to cover Scott Barrett and Patrick Tuipulotu, both of whom are returning home following the Rugby Championship for family reasons.

Sam Cane won’t be rushing back into the All Blacks captaincy.

In Cane’s absence Foster has used four All Blacks captains this season – Whitelock, Aaron Smith, Brodie Retallick and Ardie Savea.

Initially at least, Foster will allow Cane to settle back into the squad before he regains the captaincy which is likely to leave Whitelock and Savea to share the role.

“At the moment we’re going to go with the status quo,” Foster said.

“The players we’re bringing over are joining this group.

“Ardie will carry on leading this team in the short-term future.

“Once we get to Washington and Wales and make some assessments of where the other guys are at then we’ll let people know.

“Clearly we’ve got some really good leaders in this team. Ardie has done a great job; Sam Whitelock was outstanding in the early part of the year.

“Sam Cane we’re likely to just let him come back into the environment for those first two or three weeks.

“He’s got to find his feet and get his confidence.

“We’ll juggle that as we go along but we’ve got a clear plan.”

Clearys get the Panthers home Nathan Cleary’s conversion proved decisive as the Penrith Panthers outlasted South Sydney Rabbitohs 14-12 in an arm-wrestle of a National Rugby League Grand Final in Brisbane on Sunday to win the title for a third time.

The 23-year-old, whose father Ivan is coach, calmly slotted the extras after an intercept try from winger Stephen Crichton 13 minutes from time as the Panthers earned some redemption for their loss to Melbourne Storm in last year’s final.

“I’ve been dreaming of this moment for all my life and finally it’s here. We did it!” man of the match Cleary said after embracing his father, Panthers coach Ivan, on the Lang Park pitch.

“We had the hurt of last year and did it the hard way.”
