Murney Trust purchases Tuarangi Malcolm Hopwood The former Tuarangi Home will remain in local hands.

The Murney Trust purchased it at auction last month for $1.35 million and plan a major development but has yet to decide what it is.

Chief executive Willie Murney said the trust is looking at several options and will make a decision early in the new year.

“The decision to purchase came at the right time for us. We were between projects and wanted to make a further investment in Ashburton,” Murney said.

“Tuarangi Home appealed because of its location on the outskirts of town and its size for potential development.”

Trust members considered the option to bid for the property several weeks earlier, but only decided two days before the auction.

“We were the only locals there which made us more determined to retain it in local hands,” Murney said.

He said the trust is looking at options “with an open mind”.

They include a subdivision development or retaining the building, although the latter is unrealistic.

“The structure looks too far gone, but we’d like to recycle what we can and use it in a future development.

“We’re not in a rush and it may be a couple of years before development takes place.”

The trust, consisting of Willie, his sisters Jayne McLaren and Tara Newton, his mother, Kate Murney and trustee Julie Inwood, take over the property on October 22 with a priority of exterminating the rodents and relocating the pigeons.

They will also evaluate the structure of the building and its level of asbestos.

“If the building is demolished, we’ll relocate the cornerstone to another site on the property so it remains a reminder of the historic Tuarangi Home,” Murney said.

The Murney family has been approached by neighbours who’ve passed on personal memories of the home and told them about the history of the building.

“They’ve all expressed pleasure it will stay in local ownership,” he said.

The family’s last major development was Murney Main on the corner of East and Burnett streets.

With no move down to Alert Level 1 in sight, the Ashburton A&P Association committee reluctantly had to adjust the arrangements and will not be running a full show in 2021.

They will be running the competitive classes within their own bubbles behind closed doors.

President Peter Stewart said that the 2021 show will not have any trade sites, market sites, food sites, bar or entertainment “as we are unable to do so and comply with Level 2 Covid rules”.

“We will be running an exhibitor-competitor only show for 2021 for certain sections.”

No members or public, who are not exhibitors or competitors, will be able to attend.

Instead of people packing the showgrounds it will be fencing to divide the various sections into their respective bubbles.

Stewart said that while the committee and board are disappointed for this to happen two years in a row, they were pleased they were still able to put on a show.

A half-show is better than no show, Stewart said which was essentially the case last year.

After cancelling in September the show ended up running some equestrian classes, sheep dog trials, alpaccas and Highland dancing on what would have been show weekend last year.

Stewart said the logistics and timetable would be finalised at a committee meeting next week.

Sections that will definitely be running will be the equestrian, showjumping, sheep, dog trials, wool, shearing, alpacas, Highland dancing (which will take place in the Netherby School Hall), and home industries.

Exhibitors will receive an email with further details, including Covid restrictions, and expectations of exhibitors.

Sections that have already been cancelled are pet lambs, student classes, poultry, goats, and pet parade.

A full refund of entry fees in these classes, and any others subsequently cancelled will be provided.

Other shows The Ashburton A&P Show announcing it will continue in a reduced format comes just days after the New Zealand Agricultural Show in Christchurch was cancelled for the second straight year.

The Canterbury show had asked the government to allow the outdoor event to trial a vaccine certificate programme, but couldn’t get approval in time.

There will be a series of smaller events and

competitions but with no public attendance.

Ellesmere’s 150th Spring Show in Leeston will be spread across three days this weekend starting on Friday to operate a bubble system for its sections.

The Northern A&P Show in Rangiora has been cancelled but will run some sections at Labour weekend.

The Amberley A&P Show, scheduled for October 30, is expecting to make a decision this week.

Vaccine sweep set for mainland Adam Burns

Thousands throughout the mainland will be able to receive Covid jabs on Saturday as health leaders intensify the vaccine rollout.

Community leaders are pushing for as many people to get jabbed with up to 1500 doses available in the Ashburton district alone, in what is being dubbed Super Saturday.

A total of 10 spots throughout Mid Canterbury will be running vaccination clinics at various times across a 12-hour window.

Ashburton GP spokesman Malcolm Wootton said it was an enormous response from the local sector.

“We want as much of the community responding.”

Christmas in the Park cancelled Christmas in the Park has been cancelled for the second year in a row.

Organisers made the difficult decision to cancel eight weeks out from the event due to the ongoing uncertainty around Covid-19 restrictions. And the “decision is in the best interest of all involved, during this difficult time”.

Currently the South Island is in Alert Level 2 which means that outdoor events held in public parks and domains are still limited to 100 people, according to the current advice the organisers received from the New Zealand Ministry of Health.

The event was preparing to cater for a crowd of up to 10,000 people.

Although the event is still eight weeks away, the organisers said their small but dedicated team of volunteers have spent the last six months in their first planning stage and had recently moved into stage two, involving a larger amount of people, whether they are rehearsing their perfor-

mances or working on logistical areas that all contribute to producing a major event of this size.

The free outdoor family event, created by local Ashburton New Life Pastor, Lisa Anderson and has been a part of the Ashburton community since 2013, but with the cancellation this year hasn’t occurred since 2019.

The organising team understands that these are testing times Anderson said and it “was not an easy decision to make, but they must be responsible for the money and time that has gone into the event so far, as well as keep the safety of all involved a priority”.

“Given the immense amount of planning involved in this event, we have had to make the disappointing decision to cancel this year’s concert,” Anderson said.

“All sponsors will be reimbursed in full and asked to please keep next year in mind.”

John Martin says Mid Canterbury’s potholed rural roads are a “laughing stock”.

Martin lives and works in Lyndhurst and understands that the district’s roads, especially rural ones, have been a problem for a long time.

Hundreds of resident complaints about potholes and poor quality roads have been a major issue across Ashburton in recent months, even though a recent Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency technical audit report painted a much rosier picture.

Martin knows differently.

“I am sick of Line Road potholes,” Martin said “From Lyndhurst to Methven there are 41 potholes in the 9.5km of road and counting.”

Line Road connects to Thompsons Track, creating a direct route from Rakaia to Methven.

Martin said there were a number of contributing factors why Line Road was in such a state of disrepair, but poor maintenance was at the forefront.

He said the road was previously a railway and sat lower than the paddocks.

When it rained, the road floods, softening it and starting the pothole process.

Repair jobs that don’t last and trucks carrying more freight more often, were other contributing factors to the frequent potholes.

“The roads aren’t designed for the amount of trucks that use them every day,” he said.

“But what I don’t understand is if we are the fourth largest roading network in the country then why is it not being fixed?”

The council has previously said that maintenance of the district roads, especially potholes, is a complex issue. A lack of funding, legacy pothole problems and the late May floods have compounded the problem.

Martin has watched the condition of the roads deteriorate over the past two decades and said there had been too many accidents on them to count on two hands.

The road had also cost him four sets of tyres over the years.

“Everything (council focus) is based in Ashburton, they are spending a lot of money there,” he said.

“But how can the rural community support it if they can’t even get out there due to the roads?

“Someone has to stand up and fight to get this sorted.”

MAR tools help lower nitrate levels Uncertainty sees events cancelled

Unused stockwater supplied by the Ashburton District Council is helping Mid Canterbury’s ground-breaking managed aquifer recharge pilot programme lower groundwater nitrates in the Hekeao Hinds Plains area.

The pilot programme is in its fifth year and the unused water take, from the Rangitata Diversion Race, is fed into underground aquifers to boost water quality and quantity. At the same time, farmers are reducing nutrient leaching from their landuse activities and improving irrigation and water management.

In some cases, groundwater nitrate targets set for 2035 have already been achieved.

Council is among many agencies and organisations supporting the pilot, which is the collaborative work of farmers and scientists to reverse water quality damage from decades past. It began aiming to meet nitrate targets in Environment Canterbury’s Plan Change 2 of 3.8mg/l for the lower Hinds River and 6.9mg/l in shallow groundwater by the year 2035.

Results of water quality testing in the lower Hinds for the first five months of 2021 showed it was near the 2035 target and follows the introduction of a near river recharge site on the river near Mayfield.

Councillors were told recently that the recharge site was also important for the township of Mayfield as it boosted water levels in the bore used for the community drinking water supply.

The managed aquifer programme is run by the Hekeao Hinds Water Enhancement Trust and started with one recharge site at Lagmhor in 2016. Groundwater nitrate levels were between 6 and 7mg/l before in the area before it started; they are now 1.2-

No recharge has happened at the site since May’s floods because groundwater levels are high.

Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown said the programme was showing success in water quality measurements, and also in improved flows and fish life in the lower Hinds River.

"There’s been a big improvement from five years ago and a lot of work has been done by the trust, farmers have given land, and Council has played a part by giving some unused stockwater."

Trust chairman Peter Lowe said a number of recharge sites had been developed and the overall results gave farmers, irrigation companies and authorities confidence they were on the right track to achieving freshwater targets.

"These Year 5 results are cold hard facts that show we are making a difference and making progress on considerably more sites than just Lagmhor.

"But there is still work to do. The trust is in the process of converting its pilot wateruse consents to longer-term use and ongoing access to water will be important."

Bite Nite was rescheduled to Saturday 6 November, from an original date in September, following the outbreak of the Delta covid strain in Auckland. Light Up the Night, on Saturday 27 November, and Buskers Night and Family Movie Night in December, have also been cancelled.

Community Services Group Manager Steve Fabish said uncertainties around covid restrictions as health authorities tried to contain the outbreak had led to the four events being cancelled.

“While it’s disappointing, Council needed to act cautiously before committing to the extended costs of running these events.”

Bite Nite Culture Fest is an event organised by the Ashburton Youth Council and chair Michael Baker said hundreds of people had been expected to attend, along with entertainers from Auckland and other parts of the country.

“It’s just not possible now, given the covid situation in New Zealand and restrictions on gathering numbers and movements.”

Light Up the Night on 27 November is when Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown traditionally hits the switch to light up the district’s giant Christmas tree, which will this year be positioned in the newlyrevamped CBD. Council is now planning to livestream the event.

Planning for covid ... and well beyond Vaccination is the only game in town at the moment as we gear up for a confrontation with the highly-transmissible Delta strain.

Uncertainty over how and when the coronavirus will spread has us all worried. Council has cancelled Bite Nite and three big public Christmas events out of caution. We hope to keep the virus at bay, but we may not.

That’s why it is crucial our district gets behind the national Super Saturday vaccination day this Saturday and Canterbury’s own 90% For Canterbury campaign, which is the regional target the Canterbury District Health Board wants us to meet by Labour Day (Monday 25 October).

This week, about 20 per cent of our population remain unvaccinated – because they haven’t quite got around to it yet, or are vaccine hesitant or resistant.

There is plenty of excellent information from reliable health sources (covid19. govt.nz) for us to know that vaccination is the best way to protect ourselves against Covid-19. If you know someone who is not yet protected, then please help them get over the line.

Vaccinations are our pathway to a more normal life, a life without lockdowns and where businesses can operate without so many restrictions.

A life where events like Bite Nite, Light Up the Nite, shows and rodeos can happen.

It is sometimes hard to think about life without the immediate constraints of covid but in the past couple of weeks Council projects with long-lasting benefits for the future have been uppermost in our thinking.

Relocating the rail hub from the centre of town to Fairton has been made possible with some money from the Government and last week Councillors

agreed to progress to the final stage three of a detailed business case for a second bridge over the Ashburton River at Chalmers Avenue.

As well as those big ticket items, the revitalisation of the CBD streetscape is drawing to a close, repairs to the existing State Highway 1 bridge are all but complete and contractors are making good progress on installing two sets of traffic lights at Walnut Avenue.

Not all of these projects are Council’s, but they point to a future where we can get around Ashburton easily and more safely, and once again enjoy our town centre.

The second bridge is an important second connection between Tinwald and Ashburton and gives more resilience to our local roading network as well as South Island freight channels. Importantly, from a funding point of view, Chalmers Avenue has the support of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport

Agency - no other locations do.

Council must balance budgets and the whole community’s needs and wishes when it comes to the business of providing services like roads. It is not always plain sailing and in this case the water should be flowing under a bridge at Chalmers Avenue by maybe 2027, earlier if possible.

Roll up your sleeve to help protect NZ Ask a mate to vaccinate. That’s the message from Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown as health authorities try to raise vaccination levels in the district, ahead of Super Saturday jab day this Saturday.

"We can see that about 80 per cent of people across the district have had their first dose, which gives partial protection against getting seriously ill or ending up in hospital with Covid-19. Now we need people to get their second dose, if it has been three weeks since the first.

"More importantly, we need to encourage those who haven’t yet been vaccinated to go and get their first dose. We can see how the virus is spreading outside Auckland and we want people to be protected."

Mayor Brown said Super Saturday was much like election day - people could be vaccinated on Saturday 16 October, but they could also get their jab during the week leading up to Saturday.

"Our GPs and pharmacies will all be running extra vaccination opportunities."

An advertising campaign is under way this week to share information about the benefits of the vaccine and encourage people to be part of Super Saturday while

The library ran online craft sessions during the school holidays. Children were encouraged to collect take-home packs, then join in the Facebook sessions on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

When they come to collect a take-home pack, they could dress up to have their photo taken on the red carpet, just like library staff. There was also a green screen so people could have their photo taken with their favourite celebrity or movie character.

Sessions this week included creating your own Oscar Award, and making the essentials for a high tea, from doilies to recipes for scones and rice bubble slice.

Tomorrow’s craft session has a popcorn theme and is about encouraging young people to come to the library and borrow one of the DVDs from the library collection.

People visiting the Ashburton Public Library recently were treated to some movie glitz and glamour when staff dressed up for their turn on the red carpet.

Son denied MIQ spot to see dying father

A former Ashburton man is awaiting a please explain from the Government after being denied an emergency MIQ spot a day before his father died from terminal cancer.

Darin Paterson, who lives in Latvia, will have to watch his Dad’s funeral online today and will give a video eulogy. But he is angry that he will miss not being with family and friends and a chance to laugh about the times they had together.

Fortunately, he had spoken to his father, Bruce Paterson, for an hour last Saturday “describing the funny things that had happened to them in the past”.

“He was ready to go and I just wish I could have been there to say goodbye,” Darin said.

He was denied that opportunity after his application for an emergency MIQ voucher, which included a letter of support from his father’s medical practitioner, and a booked return flight, was turned down.

Included in his MIQ application was a letter from his father’s doctor seeking “compassionate consideration for flights for relative” for him to “support his father in the last stages of his life”.

The letter listed his father’s condition as “terminal”, that he was in palliative care, and that “end of life planning had commenced”.

Paterson was admitted to Ashburton Hospital on October 1 where doctors found the cancer had spread to his lungs, liver, spleen, and brain.

They were left with the only option of palliative care and pain management.

“Given these extenuating circumstances, we would appreciate your kind and compassionate consideration of his son’s return back into the country and con-

Relay For Life

A new date for Relay For Life Mid Canterbury has been announced.

The event was supposed to take place on Saturday at the Ashburton Domain, but will now take place on February 19 at the Ashburton Showgrounds. It had to be postponed from its original date due to ongoing Covid-19 restrictions. Relay For Life committee chairperson Lester McLean said that the committee is excited to have a new date and venue confirmed.

“The committee would like to acknowledge the generosity of the Ashburton A&P Association for offering us the venue at no cost,” McLean said.

Bands in the Park Bands in the Park will go ahead on October 31. Featuring the Ashburton Silver Band, MSA Orchestra, Ashburton District Pipe Band and the Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboard Club’s Accordion Group.

Three days later, Paterson was turned down by the MIQ emergency allocation team.

They said the wording from his father’s doctor was not adequate and that he would need to resubmit the correct information.

“Anyone applying for an emergency allocation under this category needs to supply a letter from a medical practitioner stating the close relative’s medical condition is terminal and their life expectancy is six months or less,” the

response stated.

“Unfortunately, your application does not include evidence from a medical practitioner that confirms the life expectancy of your close relative.”

Bruce Paterson passed away the following day, aged 75.

Now, Darin Paterson was waiting to hear back from Covid-19 Minister Chris Hipkins, having initially emailed Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern directly on Monday, imploring her to change the Government’s policy for re-entry to New Zealand, saying that it “simply is not fair”.

He told Ardern that an “emergency request should not take this long and my father died on Sunday morning, one week from being diagnosed as terminal and enough time for me to return from Latvia to see him”.

Paterson was fully vaccinated and willing to self-isolate for two weeks.

Paterson said the Government had “dropped the ball” and questioned how sportspeople, entertainers and politicians get special treatment above someone wishing to see their dying parent for one last time.

St David’s Church at Allenton is delaying its 50th anniversary until next year. The event was meant to take place over a weekend in August however minister, Rev Henry Mbambo, says because of Covid-19, the anniversary will be held in 2022, with dates to be confirmed in the new year.

Clarification The Ashburton Trust Event Centre’s income for the year ending June 2020 was $680,948. It was wrongly reported that the event centre’s income that financial year was $68,948. The error is regretted.

Rushtons’ plea for meningitis petition Malcolm Hopwood An Ashburton couple, with a very personal motivation, hope people sign their petition to get free meningococcal vaccinations for secondary school students.

The Meningitis Foundation petition, fronted by Claire and Gerard Rushton, was launched at the start of June and has so far collected nearly 3700 signatures.

With just over a fortnight to go, the Rushtons would like to see a significant increase in numbers before the petition was presented to parliament by National Party deputy leader, Dr Shane Reti.

“We’re appealing to as many people as possible to go to the meningitis website and sign the petition,” they said.

The Rushtons have a very private desire to ensure the petition works, having lost daughter Courtenay to meningitis seven years ago when she was just 16.

$400, which was “quite a cost for families,” Claire Rushton said.

“You shouldn’t put a price on the life of a child, which is what the current Government is doing.

“We want every child to be protected irrespective of where they live and what they choose to do once they leave school.”

In addition, few families know their youngsters have been only partly vaccinated. The petition called not just for protection against every strain, but to raise awareness of the other strains and how deadly they were.

According to the Meningitis Foundation, 139 cases of meningococcal were reported in New Zealand in 2019. Of those, 10 people died.

Claire Rushton called it “an absolutely horrendous disease” whose symptoms were similar to colds and tummy bugs and difficult to diagnose early.

They want full vaccinations introduced as soon as possible and have it in law by the start of the first school term next year.

When Dr Reti presents the petition to parliament, the Rushtons will be in the gallery.

That’s the view of former soldier Zane Adam, who completed two tours of duty with the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) at Bamiyan Province and now works for the Ashburton District Council.

Adam said Nelon’s mission to evacuate the 282 Afghans, who worked alongside NZDF personnel out of Afghanistan, “can’t be overstated’’.

“The Taliban will stop at nothing to find them,” he said.

He described Ford as very caring and, because she spent so much time with Afghan people, “they became almost family”.

“During the time I was with her, she became invested in them and would have got to know their families,’’ he said.

“I remember her as a very genuine person, who’d go the extra mile for them.”

The New Zealand Government have approved emergency visas for the Afghan families but how to get them out was now the problem. A rescue extraction mission, and further flights into the country, have been aborted after the Kabul Airport suicide bombing in August, leaving some 1200 people hiding from Taliban forces and fearing for their lives.

British television personality Bradley Walsh wants Ashburton’s Doris Wakelin to stay healthy because he’d like to celebrate her 106th birthday in person.

Walsh recently sent a touching video message to Wakelin, offering congratulations for turning 104 and thanking the ageless Mid Cantabrian for loving The Chase.

Walsh hosts The Chase and has a full schedule for the next two years but his agent, Debi Allen, said he’d like to free up time in 2023 and visit New Zealand and hopefully attend Wakelin’s birthday.

The Ashburton Guardian has invited Walsh to make a series of his other TV show, Breaking Dad, and Allen said he’d “love the idea in 2023”.

In her email reply, Allen copied in Barney Walsh’s agent, but said he would need convincing.

Breaking Dad is a series in which Walsh is taken by his son Barney on coming of age road trips across several countries.

Meningitis – it’s a hideous disease I

’ve never met Claire and Gerard Rushton, but my admiration for the Ashburton couple is already cemented.

The Rushtons have gone public on page 8 about a crusade so dear to their hearts that it must leave them drained and weary at times, so raw and personal is the subject matter.

The Rushtons are the driving force behind a national meningitis petition they hope will force change at Government level – and save lives in the process.

They hope to get enough support, and enough petition signatures, to get the Government to provide free meningococcal vaccinations for all secondary school students Claire Rushton said.

They also want to raise awareness of the disease and all its

They lost their youngest child, cherished daughter Courtenay, to meningitis seven years ago when she was just 16.

Courtenay had fallen ill with flu-like symptoms during a family holiday and died on January 3, 2014, just days after being taken to hospital in an ambulance.

She’d received the pneumococcal vaccine, which is provided for all children at six weeks,

five months and 15 months, but was not protected for the A, C, W, Y or B strains of the disease.

It’s those strains that the Rushtons are petitioning to be made available for free for all students before they leave school.

They are clearly resilient and determined to do the right thing.

That thing is driving a petition for change. It’s a noble cause.

One to be admired. One to be supported.

Vaccination the way forward

t’s been a bad news week for those of us looking forward to the spring shows and events.

Not only have organisers of the Ashburton and Ellesmere A&P shows had to make the difficult decision to cancel public attendance, the Canterbury A&P association and the Hororata Highland Games have cancelled completely.

I’m sure that by the time this goes to print, many more events will have pulled the pin.

The lack of clarity and surety around restrictive alert levels has been an absolute nightmare for the events industry both here in Mid Canterbury and, indeed, across the country.

Daily, I have people contacting me asking why the South Island remains in Alert Level 2 restrictions.

Nicola Grigg SELWYN MP the National Party’s other South Island MPs, wrote to the Prime Minister requesting that she release the technical advice she is using to base this decision on.

We mainlanders are a fairly pragmatic bunch and if the Prime Minister’s advice points to imminent danger of a rapid spread of the virus amongst an unvaccinated population, then I’m sure we’d all see the justification and take the necessary actions.

Without it though, we are flying blind and can only assume this is a needlessly punitive measure.

She has not replied.

It’s my view that we must now accept that the elimination strategy has not worked, and will not work.

Despite Auckland still remaining behind an iron curtain for some eight weeks now, cases are creeping into the Waikato and will, no doubt, begin an inexorable march south.

New Zealand must learn to live with this virus, and in order to do so, we must be vaccinated.

I’ve fielded dozens and dozens of outraged emails lately for

Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg proudly shows off the proof that she has been vaccinated making statements like that, and I’ve daily had angry people walk into my office to protest my

views.

And while I am usually the first person to defend individual

rights and freedom of choice, it’s time to get real.

This disease is new, and it is dangerous.

We do not have herd immunity to rely on and for those who don’t get vaccianted, for whatever reason, you risk making others sick.

For anyone who is still yet to be vaccinated, it’s important that this simple fact sinks in.

Either in the next few weeks, in a month, or maybe a little later, New Zealand will have Covid-19 moving to every corner of our country.

Every day I hear from people across the district who are struggling, both with the aftermath of the lockdown, and the impact ongoing alert level restrictions are having on their businesses.

But if we all go out and get vaccinated now it will mean less time in future lockdowns and a sooner return to a life without border restrictions, and with public events and social gatherings.

Let’s be clear, the vaccine could save your life. It could save your job, or your business.

It will see the return of events and shows.

The return of social gatherings.

An unrestricted Christmas.

Why would you want to be a perfectionist?

I

often have people tell me they ‘are a perfectionist’. Yikes?

Really?! Why waste so much time?

How often do we get caught up trying to do, or be, perfect? We put so much pressure on ourselves. When it’s not the ‘perfect’ we imagined we bash ourselves silly and see the whole thing (and ourselves) as a failure. Why would you do that to yourself?

Nothing in nature is perfect.

A tree doesn’t get to a certain height and say “Hey, I’m perfect.

I’ll stop growing now!”.

In nature, things are either growing or dying, there’s no point in between where they stop to observe their flawlessness. There is no “perfect” point.

Everything is always evolving and growing.

So why do we claim to be perfectionists? Is it a need to have full control of the outcome, or of everything around us? To create absolute certainty for ourselves?

Perfect is impossible. It’s so much extra work for little or no

Sahera Laing LIFE COACH return and the idea becomes toxic. There is not absolute certainty. Trying to create that level of certainty or ‘perfect’ is destined to fail, there’s always going to be a flaw.

Why put yourself through that?

Trying to make things perfect is also a great excuse to not even begin.

“It won’t be perfect so why bother!”

Heard that before? I’m sure you have.

Perhaps, it’s because we are overly sensitive to how others may perceive us. Will we be judged or criticised? Other people may well judge, who cares . . . the fact remains you are doing it and they are not!

Stick to your guns and en-

joy what you are doing. Life’s too short to not have fun and other people are always going to grumble . . . that, you can be sure of.

Find that sweet spot of ‘good enough’. Something you can be proud of, something you can achieve and something that is moving you towards what you ultimately want.

Let it be something you can improve upon next time, so you are leaving space for growth and development. With experience, you always find ways to improve things!

Being good enough is a lot less stress, it’s satisfying, human and flexible. It leaves room for other things.

You can put away the self-loathing baseball bat and be a be whole lot more loving.

LETTERS Cultural competency According to Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta and Future for Local Government Review panel chairman Jim Palmer, our local council is inexperienced, immature and lacking in “cultural competency” (whatever that is).

As usual, when in doubt start name calling, make patronising

comments and generally belittle any person who dares to offer an alternative view.

One has to hope our foreign minister doesn’t use the same tactics when dealing with other governments.

Town centre First off I wish to congratulate all those involved in the enhancing of the Ashburton town centre.

I look forward to the completion of this project very soon. I know it is going to be an excellent improvement on what we had.

The new Civic Centre and Library at the north end of the development, along with a revitalised Baring Square, will meld the town centre into the rest of East Street north nicely.

Just one thing that concerns me is that the south end of East Street, between Moore Street and

where East Street meets West Street, will look pretty shabby in contrast to the newly modified town centre.

I hope there are plans to enhance this area as well. If not then maybe some blending in of the old and the new will be required to reduce the impact of an old part of town and a new part of town and fairness to the businesses at the south end of East Street.

“The feedback has been very positive, it is all going well,” Pitman said. “It rained consistently here yesterday, and to be fair if the trials had been elsewhere, they might not have been on, but now we have a really nice track to trial on.

Like the Cambridge track in Waikato, the Riccarton track is Polytrack, and given the roomy expanse of the Riccarton outer track, the inside synthetic still has appealing dimensions.

The Polytrack has a 1900m circumference and a 360m home straight.

Methven duo claim pairs title Matt Markham In a sea of Allenton Bowling Club colours, it was a Methven side who emerged victorious in the weekend’s sub centre pairs playoffs at Hampstead.

After a huge day of qualifying across greens at Methven and Rakaia a week earlier, 10 pairings earned the right to head to Hampstead at the weekend for the knockout stage of the annual competition.

Six of those teams came out of the Al-

lenton Club, while three were from Methven with the other a combination from Ashburton.

With some strong combinations across the green the competition promised to be fierce and it didn’t fail to deliver, but it was the Methven pairing of Aaron Allred and Jeff Nowell who claimed honours at the end of the day’s competition.

They defeated Allenton’s Daniel Hopkins and Michael Lawson in the final to stop an Allenton clean sweep of the first two sub centre events of the season, the pairs and the triples.

After a busy enough start to the bowling season, things really ramp up again this weekend with action all over the district.

Methven kick the weekend off with their annual Farmers Tournament for the Harry Memorial Trophy today on their green, while it’s Friday triples again tomorrow at Hampstead.

Saturday sees the annual Anama Tray, a pairs tournament up for contest on the Allenton green while on Sunday the action is again back at Methven for the Edna Low Open Fours.

All of that action coincides with the beginning of the South Island Chartered Clubs’ Ladies event, which begins on Monday here in Ashburton, with 42 teams from across the South Island travelling to Mid Canterbury to compete and stay for Aaron Allred skipped himself and Jeff Nowell to sucthe week. cess in the Mid Canterbury sub centre pairs.

We meet again!

Members attended an International Night, with Mariana from Brazil as the speaker.

Books on Wheels has started again with members working with the Ashburton Library to deliver and collect books.

We contributed canned food for the local foodbank to remember World Food Day. The freezer full of pre-prepared food, and violas and toys, donated for the Flood Appeal, was much appreciated. The Literacy Committee has presented the Ashburton Maternity Ward with bright ABC cards. They had 500+ entries from 17 local schools for their Bookmarks competition.

The Spring Garden raffle will be at the Farmers Market, and also at other Ashburton sites.

The International Literacy Day was celebrated at the Ashburton Public Library with a colourful detailed display.

The Health Bursary application process is under way.

Fun Stationery has been packaged for children visiting the Hakatere Marae at times of crisis in the community, such as the floods.

Ashburton Dahlia Circle

The first table show and meeting for the 2020/21 season of the Ashburton Dahlia Circle was held with so many beautiful blooms making it onto the tables with 102 entries.

John Cuthbertson kindly judged the blooms, the entries having held up well in the recent winds and heat with some stunning blooms on display.

A meeting was held in conjunction followed by tea/coffee and nibbles. The main fundraiser for the circle is the Annual Tuber Sale Coming up on Saturday 23rd October @The Ashburton Farmers

Champion Bloom was awarded to Brian Glassey for his daffodil “Rhonda”.

Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday October 19 at the Tinwald Hall, 6.30pm All Welcome.

Ashburton Bowling Club

On Thursday the Ladies Championship Fours got under way with 2 matches being played. Circumstances out of our control have prevented any further play of these championship matches at present, but hopes are high for next Thursday.

Also, on Thursday Club Members took to the green with our fellow bowlers from MSA and it really was a lovely day for bowling, sunshine with a frisky breeze!

There was quite a gathering in the club room afterwards!

At the MSA Friday Triples – played at Ashburton – Ashburton once again figured, with Heather Goodall’s team (with L Spargo, S Maw) placed 2nd, and R McGarry as part of a composite team placed 3rd.

The Saturday Rollover Triples went ahead this week, with a slightly reduced number to last week, but which included our MSA fellow bowlers. Our men were playing Championship triples and fours which probably had a bearing on the numbers attending the rollover.

In 1st place with 2 wins, 5 ends, 14 points were M Skilling, A Blain, B Kellett, A Gibbs and in 2nd place were R Mitchell, R Keeling, H Gray and G Hurrell with 1 win, 7 ends.

At Hampstead, also on Saturday, the Ashburton Pairs team of G Eder and W Lee, reached the last 8 of the Sub-Centre pairs. Well done, gentlemen!

Sunday the 10th saw 60 bowlers – reps from Country/Mid and South Canterbury – playing on both of Ashburton’s greens,

with six of Ashburton’s men (resplendent in blue and white) among the number acting as markers. The greens and surroundings were a credit to the groundsmen! The winners were Canterbury Country, with South Canterbury 2nd and Mid Canterbury 3rd.

Congratulations to our Ashburton bowlers selected for the Mid Canterbury men’s and ladies squads, namely Brentton Donaldson, Barbara Ewing and Leonie Spargo.

Ashburton Ladies started their week by taking part in the Hefford Shield at Methven on Monday – two teams playing in the morning and one in the afternoon. Results will be forthcoming.

The postponed Murton Cup Ladies Fours, originally scheduled for Monday October 4 at Rakaia, will now be played on Monday November 1 at Rakaia.

A reminder that the Ladies Chartered Clubs tournament will be held at Ashburton for five days commencing on Monday morning, October 22.

Ashburton Golf Club

Its club champs finals day on Saturday at the Brandon. The course is in beautiful condition, the long range forecast is looking nice, all the players are in peak physical condition, everything is pointing to another wonderful day at the club.

We will kick off with the ladies plate finals. In Bronze II we have Jeanette Montgomery playing against Heather Frampton. Leigh Wackrow and Brenda Fechney will duke it out for the Bronze I, and in the Silver plate Wendy Parr will face Bev Chinn. Then in the 9 hole Sega Golf Trophy ladies section Joy Nicholas will play against Elaine King, and in the mens Murray Lister will face Tong King.

In the Men’s plates Junior B sees Bryan Donaldson and Dave Robertson locking horns. Junior A has Darren Peace and Mitchell Stoddart squaring off. Two veterans in Tim Newton and Pete Morrison will slug it out in the intermediates, and then Brendon Davidson and Paul May will do their best to give each other the game in the Seniors.

Into the big finals Liz Cabout and Lynn Small will have a great game in Bronze II as will Nicky Gill and Marilyn Walker in Bronze I. Then we are guaranteed a new name on the Ladies Silver champions board as Sharon Bradford and Jen Shepherd battle it out for their first title.

In the mens championship games, Junior B sees George Brown and Don McQuarters lead the way, both known sprinters but will have to save some energy for the afternoon round.

Junior A will be a rip and tear sort of game; young Matt Tait will try to bomb Al Jopson out of contention, but AJ is a proven stayer and will back his fitness against anyone.

I am happy to say that I more or less called the Intermediate final at the start of the knockout rounds; Blair Snowball was always the favourite and Seb McMillan was the dark horse. They both had great semi-final wins, and they will both be big players in the seniors for many years to come.

It is widely known that the intermediate champs is the hardest one to win and only the elite players get their names on that board, and either one of these fine young men will be a great addition.

In the Seniors, two-time winner and

This should be a wonderful battle with Mr Consistent Owen and the unorthodox birdie machine that is the Hopster going at each other over 36 holes.

Rounding off the day, the 9-hole championship finals sees Tonee Hurley and Jenny Mathews matched up in the ladies final, and then Peter Woods will go all out to try and stop Sam Prince’s dominance in the mens final.

It should be a superb day of golf. The course is closed to other golfers until after 3pm, so pop down watch some great golf and cheer on your favourites. Good luck to everyone.

Normal club day is on Sunday this week at usual times morning and afternoon, and happy hunting to Davo’s boys in the Redpath pennants final at Fairlie on Sunday. Lets get that flag back to the club.

Ashburton Lions Club

President Roger Paterson welcomed Mayor Neil Brown and wife Judy, prospective members David and Hilary Ward, visitors from the Hinds and County Lions and spouses/partners of Lions members.

The Lions have paid for the replacement of the damaged memorial stone at Community House. A letter of acknowledgement was received from Lion Mike and Dianne Hanham to club members who assisted with the tidy up of flood damaged fences at their property.

The three minute speaker was Lion Bruce Ferriman. Born in Ashburton, Bruce has two daughters and six grandchildren. He attended Hinds School and Ashburton College.

He did an apprenticeship in building, working for a variety of local builders.

Bruce retired in 2014. He is an active member of the Ashburton Golf Club and Ashburton Woodworkers Club. He also volunteers mowing lawns at Trotts Gardens.

Our after dinner guest speaker was Mayor Neil Brown, who spoke knowledgably and passionately about a variety of local issues.

He discussed the floods that impacted Mid Canterbury and the Council response to this. The district was declared a Civil Defence emergency – something that

had never occurred in the district before.

There was very good national media coverage of the floods.

Neil addressed the Three Waters Scheme – storm, waste and drinking water. There are some issues and reservations to work through as to whether ADC will opt in or out of the scheme.

Community consultation will follow and the ADC will make a decision after this.

Overall district waste and drinking water are in good shape.

The Fairton shunting yard project is a Kiwirail, ADC, Government partnership.

Costing $14 million, $2 million will be contributed from Government. The relocated site will enable increased potential for rail. Part of the current shunting site will potentially be used as an additional carpark.

Council has recently passed that the location of the second river bridge development will be on the end of Chalmers Ave. The Civic Centre and Library rebuild will cost $56 million, including a contingency.

The likely end date is around February 2023 – a delay of several months.

Mayor Brown discussed the current CBD upgrade, acknowledging disruptions for shop owners.

The main costs are from underground work – water, storm water, phone, fibre, power systems have all been upgraded.

Raingardens will capture water run off from the roads. Keeping East Street open has been a priority.

A and P Show gates and the Playhouse Raffle are upcoming/current projects for the Club. These will potentially affected

by Covid levels. The Golf Tournament is now to be held on 14 October.

The Club voted to replace the food trailer deep fryer, oven and hobs, which were second hand when the trailer was first built.

Lions Club Of Ashburton Pakeke

Our September tea meeting was held on Monday, September 27.

President Robert Spencer welcomed everyone and ran through the Covid rules applying for the evening.

Apologies for 13 Lions was read by Lion Les Briggs.

President Robert asked for a minutes silence in remembrance of two of our esteemed members, past District Governor Noel Lowe and past President Ron Patterson, who both sadly passed away during lockdown.

Our guest speaker for the evening was Jo Metcalf of Memory Funerals, who provided an insight into the funeral business, including the importance of forward planning.

Clipboards were circulated seeking member assistance for the Christmas Sleigh Raffle, Christmas cake orders, Christmas Parade stall, Ashburton show helpers and contacts and collectors for the upcoming Charity Market.

The presentation by Fred and Elisabeth Smits (Ashburton Vintage Car Club) on their world tour was postponed in September due to Covid but is re-scheduled for Thursday October 21.

Lion Joe Butchard spoke of difficulties regarding next years Charity Market and suggested possible solutions.

Lion Jim Martin did the tail twisting, extracting fines from members.

President Robert closed the evening with the National Anthem and wished everyone a safe trip home.

Legend lends a helping hand

Mid Canterbury rugby’s stocks have been boosted tremendously over the past few months with Nasi Manu’s involvement at the union.

Matt Markham He’s filled in holes, painted lines and helped nurture some of Mid Canterbury’s most exciting rugby talent and international rugby identity, Nasi Manu has loved every minute of it.

In a complete change of pace from his normal rugby life, the Tongan international and Super Rugby-winning captain, has been working for the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union for the past two-and-a-half months as a rugby development officer, as well as a bit of a jack of all trades.

Manu departed from his stint at Mid Canterbury Rugby this week as he prepares for the next stage in his rugby career – a contract in Japan with a yet to be announced club.

The 33-year-old was spending a few days with his family in Wellington this week before hopping on a plane today to head to his new horizons.

And he’s doing so with some even more exciting personal news.

Originally it didn’t seem as though his wife, Alice and their two children Nadia and Sione would be able to join him in Japan, but the opening of the borders there

has meant they will join him later in the year.

“That was the best news.

“We’re just waiting on their visas now, but it looks like they will join me in November, which gives me enough time to get the house, and everything sorted.”

Manu has spent the past 10 weeks working here in Ashburton for the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union, chiefly as a Rugby Development Officer, but also in any role that’s been required.

Manu’s role within the Mid Canterbury Rugby operation has seen him undertaking any number of roles, from helping connect with the Pasifika community locally, to filling in holes on the field at the Ashburton Showgrounds and painting the lines in preparation for weekend matches.

But he’s been hands-on out on the paddock as well, training with and assisting the Mid Canterbury Heartland side, and

love to play for Mid Canterbury, it’s a shame “ I’dit didn’t work out this time, but I’ve said that if I

come back and play Heartland Rugby later in my career that I want it to be for Mid Canterbury.

“It’s been a great experience, a side of rugby that I’ve never really seen before to be honest,” he said.

“It makes you appreciate, as a player, the work that goes on behind the scenes just to get everything in order for a game of rugby to be played.

“It’s opened my eyes a lot to how much is involved, and I certainly appreciate it a lot more.

“I’m really thankful to everyone at Mid

also co-coaching the Mid Canterbury Under 18 team with James McLeod.

“I’ve enjoyed that side of it.

“Mid Canterbury is in a really good place at the moment; there’s some strong systems in place and some real talent around too, which is great to see.”

As Mid Canterbury reach the business end of the Heartland Championship, Manu’s words of encouragement have helped in a huge way throughout the sea-

son to this point, and he’s confident that if they can play up to their full potential that they can go close to claiming some major silverware.

“It’s a really strong side, there’s some serious rugby players there.

“It’s a shame they lost that game to North Otago, but if they can get past the disappointment of that I think they can go a long way.”

Coming back from a small quad tear injury, he used training sessions with the Heartland side to get himself up to full fitness, as well as taking part in full-on contract training when and where possible, alongside offering a helping hand and advice to the squad.

He would have loved to have stepped out and played for the side during his time here, but with a big-ticket contract waiting for him in Japan it just wasn’t possible.

However, the powerhouse player didn’t rule out a return to the region in the future, if the cards fell that way.

“I’d love to play for Mid Canterbury.

“It’s a shame it didn’t work out this time, but I’ve said that if I come back and play Heartland Rugby later in my career that I want it to be for Mid Canterbury.”

And with strong ties to the region now – Manu’s father-in-law is Ashburton District Council chief executive Hamish Riach – there’s a good possibility of that desire becoming reality at some point in the future.

Mid Canterbury to play in Te Aroha this weekend

By Matt Markham Mid Canterbury rugby fans won’t get the chance to see their side on the television this weekend with their match against Thames Valley in the Heartland Championship shifted to Te Aroha.

Originally the match was set to be played at FMG Stadium in Hamilton as part of Waikato Rugby’s centennial celebrations, but as the situation unfolded in the

Waikato last week around Covid and lockdowns, a decision was made to relocate the match to Te Aroha to ensure it could go ahead.

The match was also set to be televised on Sky Sport as part of the celebrations, however the change in location has meant that the match will now only be shown through a Facebook livestream courtesy of Thames Valley Rugby.

It’s created some last-minute shuffling around flights and accommodation for the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union, but chief executive Ian Patterson said to have the certainty late last week at least gave them time to prepare for the change in location with the side now flying into Tauranga as opposed to Hamilton.

“There’s been a little bit to sort out, and a bit of waiting for the latest advice and announce-

ments from the Government, but the good news is that we are going to play this weekend, which is great,” he said.

Mid Canterbury will fly north for the match on Friday, with kick off on Saturday afternoon from 2.05pm at Boyd Park in Te Aroha.

This weekend’s match will prove a critical one for the Hammers.

Thames Valley currently sit second on the points standings

for the competition with four wins from their four matches, bettered only by South Canterbury’s impressive bonus points tally.

A win would elevate them to near to the top two and in with a chance of a Meads Cup berth.

A loss however could see them slip into a dangerous position of missing out on all forms of finals rugby at the business end of the season.
