Skier dies after being found unresponsive Jonathan Leask The 41-year-old man who died following a medical event at Mt Hutt Ski Area on Sunday has been remembered by friends as an “inspiration” who will be “dearly missed”.

at around 2.20pm.

Mt Hutt Ski Area manager James McKenzie said Mt Hutt medical and patrol teams immediately implemented their emergency procedures in responding to the incident and alerted emergency services.

St John was called at 2.24pm and one ambulance responded while the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue also responded to the incident.

Smith had been skiing on an intermediate groomed trail at the

time of the incident, McKenzie said.

“NZSki’s thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased,” he said.

His death has been referred to the coroner, a police spokeswoman said.

Friends have taken to social media to pay tribute to Smith, well known in snowboarding circles.

One man said the victim was always there for him and the news of the sudden death made him feel like he had “been cut in half”.

Another friend thanked Smith for “all the memories and all the epic adventures”.

Smith’s death is the first on the Mt Hutt Skifield since a horror 2010 season when there were three fatalities.

A 54-year-old Christchurch woman died while skiing outside the skifield boundary, a 21-yearold American woman died after injuring herself while also skiing off-trail and a Christchurch man died from injuries after falling about 300m.

The same year a 60-year-old

man died after his car veered off the access road as he drove home from a day at the mountain.

Before 2010, the previous fatality on the slopes was in 2005.

Following the incident on Sunday Mt Hutt was closed due to strong winds on Monday.

Principal last stop for report findings Adam Burns It’s unclear whether a report following multiple allegations of bullying by a teacher at Ashburton College will be shared with the community.

An independent investigation in response to ongoing concerns around aspects of the Te Whare Manaaki special needs unit was confirmed by the college last week, with findings reportedly due in the next

few days.

Ashburton College principal Ross Preece was likely to have the final say whether the report would be shared with the wider school community.

“At this stage, we haven’t received the draft or finalised report, so clearly we are unable to comment,” Preece told the Guardian last week.

Parents and former staff members have come forward due to an alleged lack of action from school leaders in response to accusations of bullying and abuse by a teacher towards staff and students, dating back as early as 2018.

The Ministry of Education con-

firmed it was made aware of a complaint in June but said it would not be interfering with the process, which was being driven by the school.

“There is no requirement for the board to notify the Ministry,” Te Mahau (South) deputy secretary Nancy Bell said.

“Schools have formal complaints processes in place and it is appropriate for the board to address the concerns that were raised with them.”

The ministry said it was up to the school as to when and who the report would be shared with.

Ashburton College board of trustees’ chairwoman, Jen Muir, also added that the principal would be

making a call if the report was to be made public.

Muir was asked if the teacher at the centre of the allegations had been stood down during the investigation.

Muir said that was a confidential matter and it was also a “school management issue”.

“I’m not prepared to discuss it,” she said.

Ashburton District Councillor Stuart Wilson has raised concerns around iwi co-governance around Three Waters.

Local Government Minister Nanaia Nahuta says some areas of the country are underdeveloped when it comes to recognising ongoing alliance with iwi Maori.

The minister’s comments come in response to concerns from Ashburton councillor Stuart Wilson, who recently said iwi having a 50 per cent say within one of the four new controlling Three Waters entities was “over the top” for the South Island’s largely Pakeha population.

A strengthening of iwi and Maori partnerships under Te Tiriti o Waitangi was outlined as a focus for the Future for Local Government Review as district councils confront the prospect of significant overhaul.

At an extraordinary Ashburton District Council meeting on Three Waters last month, Wilson urged staff to make a note of the proposed representative structure of the entities in its feedback to the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA).

“Why should five per cent of the population have 50 per cent say?,” he said.

He later defended his remarks as not racist.

Mahuta said some councils were more inexperienced than others when it came to ongoing affilliation with iwi.

“Some councils are on a very mature pathway in terms of the longevity of the relationship they’ve got (with iwi) and some are just starting out,” she said.

“If we can find ways with central and local government to partner with iwi Maori, that has multiple benefits for a community and region.”

Future for Local Government Review panel chairman Jim Palmer said ongoing support was required for local councils to better understand Te Ao Maori matters.

“It would be fair to say that there is some cultural competency gaps in some parts,” he said.

“There have been some significant advancements from my observations in the last five years, but it needs to be stronger.”

Wilson again challenged the notion of co-governance with iwi in response to the remarks.

“I cannot understand why we can’t sit down and talk as equals instead of getting colonialism continuously thrown in our faces,” he said.

“Our generation have done a huge amount to recompense what our ancestors did, but how long does it go on for.

“We’re a multicultural district, not a bicultural one.”

Work ramps up on final frontier of CBD project Jonathan Leask The $15 million Ashburton CBD revitalisation project is just a month away from completion as work shifts to the final street.

Work along East Street is nearing completion and contractors move to the final frontier of Havelock Street, next to the Ashburton District Council’s other major construction project – the $42m library and civic centre.

Contractors Tru-Line Civil are on target for the CBD project to be completed by November 22.

The CBD project started on Cass Street in early 2020 and had been scheduled to take two years to complete the overhaul of the CBD – encompassing the East, Moore, Cass and Havelock streets area.

Battling with the impacts of two Covid-19 level 4 lockdowns and supply chain issues, the end is certainly in sight.

Contractors are busy completing works along East Street with the paving of the footpaths well advanced, with only the Burnett to Havelock Street block to be completed by Friday.

The remaining work on East Street includes completing the footpath area north of the public toilets by the end of October which will include an area where the town’s Christmas tree will be placed.

The installation of tree edging around the oak trees and grassing of the green belt is due to start which will enable the completion of the children’s play area.

The last of the garden planting will also be carried out and the remaining seats and litter/recycling bins will be installed.

Havelock Street is the last street in the project for major reconstruction.

Havelock Street will then be closed in two stages to enable a faster road surface reconstruction.

From October 18-24, Havelock Street will be closed to traffic between East Street and the MSA carpark, and then from the MSA carpark to Cass Street from October 26 to November 2.

The Havelock Street footpaths will then be prepped and finished with paving or asphalt in different areas.

A new pedestrian crossing is being installed across the roadway to the new library and civic centre building.

Trees and gardens will also be put in place to complete this part of the CBD upgrade.

More events cancelled Events on the district’s calendar continue to be cancelled due to the uncertainty around Covid-19 restrictions.

The Ashburton A&P Show is holding firm to continue under a bubble system in alert level 2 but other events are not as fortunate, like Christmas in the Park which has now been cancelled and the Methven Rodeo which has been postponed.

Covid-19 uncertainty has meant that eight week’s out from Christmas in the Park, organisers have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s concert.

The Ashburton District Council has cancelled Bite Nite and its three public Christmas activities because of the same uncertainties around Covid-19.

Bite Nite had already been rescheduled to November 6 from its original date in September.

Light Up the Night on November 27 and Buskers Night and Family Movie Night in December, have also been cancelled.

Community services group manager Steve Fabish said uncertainties around the restrictions as health authorities tried to contain the outbreak have led to the four events being cancelled.

“While it’s disappointing, council needed to act cautiously before committing to the extended costs of running these events,” he said.

Bite Nite Culture Fest is organised by the Ashburton Youth Council and chair Michael Baker said hundreds of people had been expected to attend, along with entertainers from Auckland and other parts of the country.

“It’s just not possible now, given the Covid situation in New Zealand,” Baker said.

Light Up the Night is when Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown traditionally hits the switch to light up the district’s giant Christmas tree, which will this year be positioned in the newly-revamped CBD. The council is now planning to live-stream the event.

Relay for Life is another event that has had to postpone, while the Methven Lions’ Methven motor show has also been cancelled.

40 years ago royalty came to town Malcolm Hopwood Ashburton basked in the afterglow of a Royal visit 40 years ago to the day tomorrow.

Back in 1981, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip and their entourage landed at Ashburton Airport.

According to the Ashburton Guardian, they drove, via a “sweep inside Tuarangi Home entrance”, to Coniston where they enjoyed lunch with 100 residents carefully chosen by the borough and county councils.

Chefs at the Hotel Ashburton spent two days preparing the food while the Ashburton Floral Art Group “worked hard to create a superb display on the tables.”

Afterwards, the Royal couple drove past the Ashburton Hospital to the Domain, which principal nurse, Muriel Fowke, said had “a therapeutic effect on hospital patients”.

It was during the couple’s 50-minute walk through the Domain that local people had the opportunity to view them.

Local resident, June Strange, was “tickled pink” when the Queen and Duke admired her circular jewellery box, while Denise Duff, an IHC trainee, was thrilled with the royal interest in the society’s basketware display.

A badge from the Ashburton branch of Riding for Disabled was presented to the Queen for Princess Anne, who’s the movement’s patroness and the royal couple took time to inspect the horses and talk to riders and instructors.

At the completion of her walk, the Queen planted a lime tree in the domain

A local resident owned a green MG sports car, identical to that which Prince Philip drove in the 1940s while courting Princess Elizabeth.

MG on the side of the road near Ashburton Airport. Sure enough, the Royal Rolls stopped abruptly, and Prince Philip leant out and inquired about it.

Only when he realised it wasn’t his, he lost interest.

The Queen breathed a sigh of relief.

Focus on what can be done, not on Covid can’ts

By Heather Chalmers Rather than dwell on events that have been cancelled or postponed because of Covid-19 social restrictions, people should instead focus on projects or activities they can do, says Mid Canterbury rural health advocate Craig “Wiggy” Wiggins.

Wiggins’ message comes as the Methven and Winchester Labour weekend rodeos are postponed and the New Zealand Agricultural Show in Christchurch is cancelled for the second year in a row.

“These events are a great way of staying connected and contributing back to communities and a blow commercially as well as to the many volunteers who have contributed so much time,” he said.

“Covid-19 has changed what was a normal life and we have to look for a new normal.”

Wiggins was named this year’s Rural Communicator of the Year and has initiated several campaigns, events and activities to improve the wellbeing and mental and physical health of rural people.

“We can’t stress about the things that we have lost, but instead try to achieve some small goals and projects.

“This could be anything from going fishing to riparian planting.

“We still live in a beautiful place.”

Wiggins has received a great response to his lean on a gate and talk to a mate campaign, with 40,000 plus social media views.

It is a simple message aimed at encouraging people to stay connected.

Wiggins said that farmers have always had the ability to get off-farm, even if they haven’t always taken it.

“When Covid-19 comes along and shuts that gate, it is just another layer of isolation that the farmer can’t control.

“So, it is important that you pick up the phone or reach out to someone you haven’t talked to for a while and it may just put a different perspective on things or lighten your day.

He suggests making a list of five people you trust and whose company you enjoy.

“Contact one of those five people every week, then start again or try a new list.

People will love to hear from you if it’s been a while. Trust me, I know this works.

Wiggins’ Whatever with Wiggy rural forums over Zoom were continuing about twice a month, giving rural people nationwide an opportunity to participate in discussions on rural topics and interact with guest speakers.

Once Covid-19 restrictions on social gatherings were more relaxed, Farming Families, a rural wellbeing initiative Wiggins is involved with along with Bruce Taylor of Farmlands Ashburton, had more projects planned. Farming Families had purchased a large mobile barbecue trailer, which it planned to use to support local rural school events.

This was aimed at getting people down to the local community hub, which these days tended to be the school, whether they had children attending or not. This was to provide a more social occasion around events such as sports days and end-of-year prize-givings.

In conjunction with Rakaia GP Dr Sue Fowlie, Wiggins has also taken a caravan to rural events such as stock sales to encourage farmers and other rural people to get medical check-ups.

Two mycoplasma bovis cases in two weeks Heather Chalmers Mid Canterbury has had another dairy farm confirmed with cattle disease mycoplasma bovis, the second in two weeks.

Both dairy farms were detected through August screening of bulk tank milk, the Ministry for Primary Industries said.

All four active confirmed M. bovis cases in New Zealand are in Mid Canterbury. The other two are a beef property confirmed in September and the long-standing Five Star Beef feedlot case.

were being worked through.

This is the second year in a row Mid Canterbury dairy farms have been identified with M. bovis through August bulk tank milk screening.

The national surveillance tools developed by the M. bovis programme, including bulk tank milk screening and beef surveillance continued to provide confidence that M. bovis was not widespread, Anderson said.

“These tools play an important role in looking for infection outside the network of infected farms we’ve been able to trace through investigating recorded animal movements through NAIT and other farm records.

“This surveillance will also play a significant part in providing the confidence needed to declare New Zealand M. bovis free.”

The bulk tank milk screening programme takes samples each month at the point of collection as part of the normal milk collection process.

Samples are screened for M. bovis antibodies and indicate where a closer look was needed.

The higher number of detects in August was expected.

In August, the bulk tank milk screening programme tested samples from 8497 dairy farms.

Of these, 62 farms had a ‘detect’ result that required further onfarm investigation.

“We know that this is an extremely busy time for farmers and have moved these 62 dairy farms through the testing process as swiftly as possible, operating in a way that keeps both farmers and staff safe under each level of the Covid-19 restrictions.”

Most of the 62 dairies were under animal movement restrictions for less than 10 days, while on-farm investigations were completed. After on-farm investigation of August’s detects, 60 dairy farms were found not infected, with the two Mid Canterbury dairy farms confirmed with the disease.

Screening of September’s bulk tank milk is progressing, with eight detects to date requiring further on-farm investigation.

The beef surveillance programme screens beef cattle not connected to the known network of infected properties.

As at October 6, more than 502,300 animals have been sampled from over 17,000 farms. No infected farms have been found from this surveillance to date.

“These results give us increasing confidence that M. bovis is not widespread in the beef sector,” Anderson said.

M. bovis was first detected in New Zealand in July 2017, after cattle in a South Canterbury dairy herd began displaying symptoms of a novel disease.

Since then, 267 properties have been cleared and 172,498 cattle culled in a national bid to eradicate the disease, with $210.9 million paid in compensation to farmers for the loss of livestock and production.

Stop sulking, start being an opposition, says Feds’ Clark Malcolm Hopwood “It’s time for the National Party to stop sulking and get on with the job.”

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury President, David Clark, in reacting to this year’s mood of the boardroom survey, said the “key to a good democracy is a strong opposition and that’s been lacking in the last four years”.

He agreed with comments made in the survey by Federated Farmers chief executive, Terry Copeland,

who said Opposition Leader, Judith Collins, “seems disconnected to most New Zealanders”.

“Unless she improves from the party’s 22 per cent support, she’s not going to be Prime Minister,” Clark said.

Clark expressed dismay that the opposition has been unable to challenge the competency of the current government.

“This is a country in crisis,” he said.

“Covid is going to spread throughout New Zealand and, when it escaped from MIQ, we had the second lowest vaccination rate in OECD countries.

“Instead, we spent far too long as a country congratulating ourselves for getting lucky the first time around and weren’t prepared for the eventual arrival of Covid,” Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury President, David Clark.

New Zealand well-placed to ride regenerative agriculture wave A significant opportunity exists for New Zealand to position itself to take advantage of the global regenerative agriculture trend, according to research commissioned by Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) and New Zealand Winegrowers (NZW).

“Although still in its infancy, regenerative agriculture is gathering momentum and is set to become a significant trend in food internationally,” B+LNZ chief executive Sam McIvor said.

“Brands are beginning to follow the leads of farmers and growers in the support of regenerative agriculture, and while the concept has yet to properly take hold among consumers, this research reveals there is a bright future.

“Fortunately, we believe the majority of New Zealand’s sheep and beef farming practices naturally align with key pillars of regenerative products or production.

“This isn’t to say all farms are applying all regenerative agriculture principles all the time, but in general, New Zealand is better placed than other countries to meet these requirements. Our farming systems are so different from conventional agriculture such as in North America with their feedlot-raised beef and sheep meat.

“What this all means is there could be a significant opportunity for New Zealand sheep and beef farmers and wine growers to capture this value in the marketplace.”

NZW general manager marketing Charlotte Read said the New Zealand wine industry was proud of having a world-leading sustainability programme in place since 1995.

“As we strive to continually improve, we are committed to understanding the environmental considerations of wine drinkers in our global export markets, and how this impacts their purchasing decisions and how this impacts what we do in the vineyard,” Read said.

The research reveals consumers may be willing to pay more for regeneratively-produced food, especially if science can show it tastes better, is better for people’s health and better for the environment.

The research by Alpha Food Labs, commissioned by B+LNZ and NZW with funding support from the Government through the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures fund as part of its Fit for a Better World programme, represents one of the most comprehensive reviews into the market potential of regenerative agriculture.

It sought to understand the current state and future market potential of regeneratively produced- food and wine within three of New Zealand’s international markets – the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom.

McIvor said narratives that focused on the potential taste, health and environmental benefits of regeneratively produced food products resonated strongly

B+LNZ will now work with farmers and other industry partners to develop a firm plan on how the red meat sector can capture this potential value for New Zealand.

with consumers, specifically the potential for regenerative agriculture to be part of a climate change solution.

“The study’s findings suggest there is strong potential to build regenerative agriculture into the New Zealand agriculture narrative.

“The red meat sector should adopt an integrated approach to marketing by ensuring the regenerative attributes are embedded into the New Zealand story, in particular, Taste Pure Nature, the New Zealand red meat sector’s country of origin brand.

“The regenerative agriculture movement is a chance for New Zealand to go deeper on communicating to the world the essence of New Zealand agriculture and provide new story dimensions to our existing global campaigns.

“Combining this story with future scientific research into potential connections between ecosystem health in New Zealand would provide a compelling argument for buying regeneratively

helping us to satisfy the demands of conscious consumers in the future.”

B+LNZ general manager market development Nick Beeby said that in the absence of a clear unified definition of regenerative agriculture globally, New Zealand must define what ‘regenerative’ means in a New Zealand context.

“We also need to examine other aspects to regenerative that may be worth adopting. Ultimately, this creates an opportunity for New Zealand to step forward to craft that definition. We need to make the concept simple and relevant for consumers.

“B+LNZ’s role will be to develop the framework in consultation with meat processing and marketing companies who can then work with farmers to take advantage of this opportunity.

“We believe the key is in how we tell the New Zealand farming story, the attributes, measurements, and verification that sit around this story and our claims,” Beeby said.

We need to keep our island Covid-free C

Surely that has to be an option to stop the dreaded Delta variant slipping into the Covid-free South Island while we’re vaccine vulnerable in the Mainland.

Introducing way tougher inter-island travel restrictions for the next month or so, or at least until the South Island hits the 90 per cent double jabbed milestone, almost seems too logical, and maybe that’s the problem.

University of Otago’s professor of public health, Nick Wilson, probably feels the same way. He said the Government was “crazy not to try to protect the South Island’’, remembering that the most recent community case in our island of about 1.2 million was over 300 days ago.

You only have to look across

Daryl Holden the ditch to Tasmania to see how such a regional border lockdown could work. Tasmania hasn’t had a community case for more than 500 days, while most of the other states in Australia have struggled to keep their Covid heads above water.

But would the Government do it? Would it introduce a sort of iron curtain to keep Covid-19 out of the South Island until we’re nearly all double vaccinated?

Fat chance, which would be a shame. But let’s think about it.

Okay, that’s a bit far-fetched but, seriously, something has to be done to keep the South Island Covid-clear at least until most of us are double-jabbed.

Maybe then, and only then, would we feel happy about keeping the South Island open for business.

At the moment, we’re the proverbial sitting Delta duck.

Greying graciously Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR

I

’m still rockin the ‘holiday beard’.

It’s pretty much all about laziness.

It’s definitely not about how good it looks!

I’m enjoying the break from shaving.

I’m enjoying passing the ‘itchy’ stage, but I’m not enjoying the ‘Santa’ references from some people though.

It certainly has got quite a bit whiter since I last cultivated some growth, which was over the Christmas break.

I think I’ll be packing my razor this year for fear of being asked to throw lollies to kids off the back of a truck.

In saying that though I have a ‘it is what it is’ philosophy about it. Not sure what happened to the wisdom that was supposed to accompany the greys.

As I was pondering the theme of this week’s column while consuming my morning ibuprofen with a pint of water chaser and it came to me.

I remembered a top 5 list I had shared on air. Signs you are getting old. On that list was ibuprofen being one of your food groups.

I wondered how many other signs you’re getting old boxes I ticked.

So, this is what I came up with when I looked up signs you’re getting old.

■■ You can’t walk past the toilet without thinking “While I’m here I may as well go”.

No dramas here for me yet.

■■ An ‘All-nighter’ means not having to pee.

Thank God I get up at 4am.

■■ When you fall down and people panic and start running towards you, rather than laughing at you.

Most of my falling is off my bike and they are definitely still laughing.

■■ Getting lucky means finding your car in the carpark.

Luckily, we have small carparks in Ashburton.

■■ The groaning noises in bed are due to the bad back or knees.

My knees are fine.

■■ You turn off lights for economic reasons rather than romantic ones.

Bugger! Yep, that one is true.

■■ Your knees buckle, but your belt won’t.

I have a big belt.

■■ The little old lady you just helped across the road is your wife.

LETTERS Live theatre As the curtain comes down on a very successful season of The Little Mermaid Junior, we need to pause for a moment and congratulate each and every person involved in making this show happen.

I understand more than most the time and dedication needed to stage a production at this level, add to that the restrictions brought about by the Covid levels introduced back in August and it would have been forgivable for the committee to throw their hands in the air and cancel the production for a second year.

At a time where the world must seem a crazy place to be growing up, the children needed some form of normality back in their lives again and this performance offered this in spades.

Theatre is often described as escapism, a place were you can go and forget about life for a while, take on the life of another person, a creature, sing songs with others creating beautiful harmonies.

For the 50 children involved in The Little Mermaid Junior, their place was beneath the waves, where, with teamwork, enthusiasm and talent, they forged new friendships and bonded together to create entertainment for us all to enjoy, allowing us to forget about the struggles that are every day life at the moment.

The joy on the cast’s faces after each performance was priceless, and the pride the parents showed for those who, some for the first time, took that step on to the stage and gave it there all.

The Sarah and Matt Smith-trained mare made it back-to-back wins when she emerged from a hopeless position to storm to victory at last Friday’s meeting in Timaru. The seven-year-old mare settled well back in the stayers event for Sam Wynne, but found a clean passage through the field up the straight to win impressively, signalling a really strong start to the spring not only for herself, but also her trainers, who continued their great season thus far.

Cranbourne’s Cup Matt Markham Mid Canterbury pacer Cranbourne enhanced his chances of making this year’s New Zealand Trotting Cup with gusto on Sunday when he claimed the time-honoured Methven Cup, raced at Orari.

But there’s another major challenge on the horizon first that trainer Brent White is keen to tick off before they even get to the big dance on the second Tuesday in November.

And that will see Cranbourne heading to the Kaikoura meeting on November 1, which is now being held at Addington, but

not for the Kaikoura Cup, where many of his key rivals in the New Zealand Cup will be.

White has plans on starting Cranbourne in the Sales Series Aged Paced – a $50,000 feature on the Kaikoura card on the same day.

“I think he will fit into that well and it is worth the same amount of money as the Kaikoura Cup,” White said post Sunday’s big victory.

Sitting in 23rd on the rankings to make the New Zealand Cup prior to Sunday’s victory, Cranbourne should see a notable rise up the ladder when the next round of rankings is released this week.

The Methven feature was always a race they wanted to target, and it couldn’t have worked out any better.

Away safely from the stand, driver Stephen McNally made a mid-race move to get outside the leader before relinquishing that spot at the 800m mark.

That proved to be the winning of the race, as Cranbourne was able to angle inside runners at the top of the straight and charge to the line to claim the

victory, becoming the first Mid Canterbury-trained horse to win the Methven feature since Jimmy Johnstone in 2013.

“I said to Stephen when he hopped in the cart, that this is probably our New Zealand Cup today, so it as great to get the win,” White said post-race.

“And it was great for all the owners, because they are all from around the area.

“He had to put his hand up today.

“It was a credit to Stephen, he put him in the race and made a decision to hand up the parked position when he did, and that was probably the winning of the race.”

Cranbourne beat home Steel The Show and Southland raider, Vintage Cheddar in the run to the line in the $30,000 event.

Local galloper Lord Darci justified some heavy support from punters early on during Friday’s Timaru meeting with a stunning victory fresh-up. The Bevan and Robyn Wilson-trained son of Darci Brahma hadn’t been seen at the races since April, but had enjoyed three trials prior to last week’s resumption. Kylie Williams situated the gelding middle of the pack and he unleashed with a telling finishing burst to win comfortably, signalling he’s a horse who should have some fun over the coming months.

Hooper lands success Ashburton trainer Jimmy Hooper continued his good association with Methven Cup day on Sunday, when he prepared talented pacer Just Michael to win on the undercard. Hooper produced Kip Ross to win the Methven Cup back in 2008, and Just Michael is a close relative of the noted stayer.

After plenty of battles with the horse, Just Michael lobbed the trail on Sunday for driver Sarah O’Reilly, and burst through the lane to win at odds of better than $30-to-one, the gelding’s second career success.

Peter getting his mojo back It’s taken more than six months, but local horseman Peter Corbett has moved on from personal tragedy and got his training mojo back.

Corbett wasn’t much in the mood for training after losing his partner Terrill Charles to brain cancer in December 2020 following a lengthy battle.

But he’s now back on track, and fittingly it was Dee and Gee – the New Zealand Cup winner who provided them with their greatest thrills during Charles’ battle – that highlighted Corbett’s renewed enthusiasm with a first-up victory over 2000m at Riccarton earlier this month.

Dee and Gee scored an emotional victory on January 16 in the Waikouaiti Cup, three days after the memorial service for Charles at Riccarton – achieved despite Corbett being so busy that he had to work the mare at Riccarton on the day of the service and not back home at Timaru.

However, Corbett said he wasn’t feeling up to training much after that.

“I sort of lost interest in the horses for a few months.

“I was only going 70 per cent,” Corbett said. “But I’ve got back into it since then. I’ve been putting 110 per cent effort back into it and now that I’m putting a bit more effort into them it’s starting to look like they might start doing something again.”

Corbett wasn’t sure immediate-

ly after losing his partner about whether he’d keep going with Dee and Gee, but the victory in January convinced him to keep her going.

“I was going to retire her after the Waikouaiti Cup if she hadn’t run in the first three, but she went out and broke the track record so

I thought she’s still got something left in her,” he said.

“I’d love to get another Cup with her. I turned down good money for her as a broodmare.

“I just wasn’t ready to sell her at that stage and I don’t really want to breed from her myself, but I thought we’d have another go and see how she’d go.”

Though she is now an eightyear-old, Corbett was confident Dee and Gee was ready to run well when she resumed in the NZB Ready to Run Sale Open.

“Even though she’s an eightyear-old, she’s come back the best she’s ever been this season,” he said.

“I galloped her with a couple of others during the week and she was right with them, so I thought she was close enough.

“I got her at $31, and I got quite a bit of it.”

Dee and Gee is likely to run next in the Listed Christchurch Casino Spring Classic at Riccarton on October 23 and then the Listed Nautical Boat Insurance Metropolitan Trophy Handicap on November 6 before returning for the Group 3 Martin Collins

New Zealand Cup on November 13.

Tegan Newman, who’s ridden nine winners so far this season, will retain the ride in the Spring Classic even though there won’t be any apprentice claims in that event.

Dee and Gee won the New Zealand Cup in 2019 but was 11th of 17 last year, an effort Corbett said didn’t reflect her ability.

“We probably shouldn’t have gone in the Cup last year, her blood was that far out, but I pushed ahead because Terrill was in hospital,” he said.

“But if she carries on the way she’s working and the way she raced on Saturday, there’s no reason why she hasn’t got more wins in her, even though she’s an eight-year-old.”

Corbett is preparing about a dozen horses at the moment.

Among the runners he likes are Seven Aajes, a two-time winner for Corbett last season that is part-owned by northern racecaller George Simon, and Dragon Run, a sprinter previously trained

by Bruce Wallace and Grant Cooksley.

Stags show serious intent Matt Markham Tech Stags drew first blood in South Canterbury Cricket’s Tweedy Cup, knocking over Mid Canterbury bedfellows Allenton by seven wickets on Saturday.

The local derby, the first match of the season, also acted as a debut appearance in the competition for the Allenton side, but it might be one they’d rather forget after a flurry of early wickets left them in a power of trouble.

Originally scheduled for the Ashburton Domain Oval, the match was shifted onto the artificial wicket at the Ashburton Domain, and Allenton claimed the first scalp of the match by winning the toss with captain Karmjeet Singh electing to send Tech out into the field to bowl first.

After ten minutes it looked a decision that Singh would rue, as he, along with three other top order batsmen, found themselves back in the shed, and their side with four wickets down and just three runs on the board in the fifth over.

Harry Jones claimed a wicket in the first over of the match, before Jason Morrison ran out the captain two overs later. Richard Print then stepped up to the mark and claimed two wickets of his own to leave Allenton’s batting effort on life support.

A 47-run fifth-wicket stand between Ranvy Pannu and Sanjay Singh steadied the ship though, and when Pannu departed for

At 3-151 after just 16 overs, Tech were in control and Kruger went about his business, picking up right where he left off last season.

Satveer Singh fell first for 57, and then Sanjay Singh a few overs later for 55, with Bevan Ravenscroft doing the damage with the ball to remove both batsmen.

A late flurry by Manpreet Hakkla, who added an unbeaten 33,

pushed the Allenton score to 184 all out in the 45th over.

Ravenscroft was the pick of the Allenton bowlers with 3-36, while Jones and Print both picked up a brace.

On an artificial pitch, 184 runs looked well under the required for the match, but it also provided just an awkward enough total for the Tech batsmen.

Champions were crowned at the Ashburton MSA Petanque Club on the weekend.

The club held its annual club championship singles on Saturday with a strong field of local players lining up for the action on the terrain at the Racecourse Road establishment.

After some good form in events across the South Island during recent weeks, the day’s play was always going to be competitive, and

Neville Bensdorp. it proved to be nothing short of that, with some enthralling matches in order to find the day’s winners.

In the women’s event, Chris Taylor emerged victorious, heading off Rewa Kyle in the race to the title, while Carol Hogg finished in third position.

In the men’s event, Neville Bensdorp continued his golden run of form to add the club singles to his list of achievements when beating

Richard Browne, with Jonathan Crum claiming third spot.

The weekend was the precursor to two huge days of play this coming weekend, when both the Canterbury Singles and the Canterbury Doubles competitions will be held at the club.

Players from all over the region will converge for the action in the singles on Saturday, and then back up 24 hours later in the search for success in the doubles.

Basketball kicks off with plenty of smiles Basketball Mid Canterbury’s women’s grade beMatt gan for the new season last week, and if the intent Markham shown in the opening round is anything to go by, it’s going to be a great season on the court.

The six teams that took to the court for the first night of the season all produced outstanding basketball in each of the three matches, with some tight encounters and plenty of free-flowing action.

Team FKW produced the biggest winning effort of the night, beating Basketbrawlers 62-39.

The scoreline wasn’t a fair reflection of the match however, with just five points separating them at the half-time break, before FKW really found their stride.

Bricklayers also made a strong start with a good win over Oldies But Goodies, but they had to fight hard for it, with their rivals really coming into their own in the second half of the match.

Sarah How was in outstanding form from outside of the circle for Bricklayers, landing four three-pointers to see her side home 38-24 at the final buzzer.

The last game of the night saw Summer’s Team take on Pass The Antiflam.

Up 27-16 at the break, Pass The AF were able to grab 21 points in the second half to seal the win, but Summer’s Team kept them on their toes with 16 points of their own to see the match finish 48-32.

Teams are back on the court tonight for the second round of the season. Bricklayers and Basketbrawlers, along with Oldies But Goodies and Summers Team will take the 6.15pm slots while two of last week’s winners Pass The AF and FKW will square off in the late match at 7.30pm.

Bonus points keep Hammers’ hopes alive Matt Markham It wasn’t pretty, but there’s five points in the bank, and Mid Canterbury’s chances of reaching the Meads Cup in this year’s Heartland Championship remained alive on the weekend.

Seven days after a lacklustre effort against North Otago, which handed the side their first defeat of the season, the green and golds bounced back with a bonus-point victory over Wairarapa Bush on Saturday night in Masterton.

But while maximum points are the ultimate at this stage of the competition, there was still a real sense of frustration from within the camp about the performance, which looked to be a number of levels below what the Hammers have promised they are capable of.

Down by eight at the break, only some smart transitions between the playing paddock and the reserves bench turned the tide as Mid Canterbury ran in three second half tries to win the match 28-18.

Co-coach Dale Palmer painted the picture of a frustrated man on Monday morning – agitated by the fact that his side again found themselves with their backs against the wall when they shouldn’t have been.

“I don’t think I’ve given a halftime speech like the one I gave on Saturday night,” he reflected.

“We’d made a lot of ground up during the week following the loss to North Otago, but it all seemed to go out the window when we got out onto the paddock, and the same mistakes came creeping back into our game.”

Things started well enough.

Rampaging lock, Manasa Bari – who was been one of the best for Mid Canterbury all season thus far – found a hole from about 35 metres out, and charged to the line to put the visitors up 7-0 after just a few minutes.

But almost from that moment, Mid Canterbury lost all resemblance of a team in control, while Wairarapa Bush grabbed every opportunity they could and piled the pressure on.

“We let them get back into it after that first few minutes.

After a dressing down at halftime from Palmer, Jason Rickard and Sean Cuttance, the side returned to the turf in the second half, and you could almost see the change in mindset from the kick-off.

The introduction of a few new players to the game, including Tepasu Thomas and Harvey Blyth, changed the direction ever so slightly, and front-foot ball became frequent.

The powerhouse Mid Canterbury scrum again played its role to perfection, and a set piece backline move saw Tom Reekie crash over in the corner, and all of a sudden Mid Canterbury were back in the match.

Not five minutes later and they were back in front after Bari got outside his man down the wing and found Raitube Vasurakuta, who brushed off a defender to run 40 metres and score.

Up 17-15 after 10 minutes in the second, Mid Canterbury went into control mode, and two penalties from the boot of Reekie put them out to an eight-point lead, before captain Seta Koroitama-

na took a quick tap from a scrum penalty and burrowed his way over to secure the four-try bonus point.

“That first half was disappointing, but you have to give the guys credit for the way they bounced back in the second and got the job done. It’s all there, and one day they are going to put together a performance we know they are capable of.

“Getting the five points out of the game was the big thing, we needed that – but we can’t afford to let some of these teams that we have coming up get on top of us, like what has happened in the past two weeks.

“We’ll work on a few things this week, and hopefully that will help sort some of those issues out.

“But we know we can be better.”

Bari and Ashton McArthur were two of the best players on the paddock for Mid Canterbury in the match.

The latter, in his first run-on game, was outstanding across all facets of the game, considering he was thrown into the deep end to cover for the influential Osian Davies.

In the backs, Nathan McCloy is really settling into his role at fullback, and offers nice variety with his powerful left boot.

With a number of injury concerns hanging over the team still this week, there’s no certainty on who will be available for this weekend’s match against Thames Valley, if it goes ahead – but with players like Thomas, who was immense off the bench, there’s some good depth to help the side through.

Wilson starts season strong Ashley Wilson made the best possible start to his cycling season, taking victory in Tinwald Cycling Club’s, Brad Hudson Flooring, Mathieson Chartered Accountants, 36km handicap event around the Wakanui-Haketere block on Sunday.

Wilson made a solo mid-race break, riding strongly to find the front, and he held on to take the major spoils.

Co-marker Nig Chatterton chased bravely, holding out the fast-charging group behind to secure second place.

Sam Barltrop backed up the previous week’s top effort, claiming the final podium position.

Monique Brake, Ben Knights and Gareth Lewis continued their good early season form to round out the top six.

Scratch marker Steve Hands took fastest time honours, riding the distance in a quick 49.29.

Larry Neal and Kyle Gray secured second and third time.

The juniors and division 2 competed over 16km.

Honor Bradford rode strongly to get to the front of the race, and she maintained a gap to the chasing riders to secure the victory.

Thomas Stevenson laid down another top ride to take second place.

Back marker Isabella Inglis rode through the field to secure third, and in doing so recorded the fastest time, covering the course in 29.44.

Sarah Gould, Leah Reid, and Charlotte Neal filled the top half dozen.

A solid number of division 2 riders went to the line.

Nina Bradford made it a great day for the Bradford stable, claiming the win and fastest time honours.

Janette Hooper backed up last week’s win with a solid second place performance.

Kerry Clough was in the thick of the finish to secure third place.

Next week the club will contest a 45km handicap event around the Dawson’s Road block.

Ashley Wilson made the perfect start to his season with the Tinwald Cycling Club when winning on Sunday.
