Ashburton College’s top student has already got her sights set on the next adventure.
Ella Skinner, named Dux at the recent senior prizegiving, heads to Lincoln University next year for a Bachelor of Commerce degree, majoring in accounting and business. Her intention is to return to Ashburton to become an accountant.
“I chose Lincoln because it is a nice and small campus, and the degrees are focused on rural areas,” she said.
Skinner has already had a taste of what it’s like to work in an accounting thanks to local firm Brophy Knight where she has had some intern work this year.
“The work has allowed me to see the bigger picture,” said Skinner, who will have some university fees covered after topping the school accounting class to win a scholarship from Brophy Knight.
Along with being top in business studies and accounting at Ashburton College, she also achieved the top spot in maths, as well as achieving the Level 3 Excellence and the AshColl Way Awards.
Skinner said becoming Dux was a “big shock’’ that she never expected and one person who couldn’t be prouder is mum Debbie Skinner.
“She has worked really hard and put in the hours to get it.
“It’s really good when companies like Brophy Knight offer young people opportunities like this.
“It has given her a goal to work towards.”

Minor changes in a revised tsunami evacuation zones mainly impacts 10 rural properties.
The Ashburton District Council released its updated tsunami evacuation zones after scientific modelling showed new areas that could be flooded in some worstcase tsunami scenarios.
Council strategy and compliance group manager, Jane Donaldson, said most of the newly

Based on the new modelling, that was commissioned by Environment Canterbury, the changes in the Ashburton District are relatively minor, with around 10 new properties included in the revised zones.
Settlements such as the South Rakaia Huts, Lower Hakatere Huts, and North Rangitata Huts
were already located within existing tsunami evacuation zones.
The district has two tsunami evacuation zones, red and orange.
The red zone is most likely to be affected by a tsunami and includes estuaries, river mouths, and beaches where a tsunami of any size could cause strong currents and surges in the water.
The orange zone is less likely to be affected by a tsunami than the red zone and includes areas of land that could be flooded in a large tsunami.
Donaldson said that people in the red and orange zones need to evacuate immediately if they feel a long or strong earthquake, or
receive an official tsunami warning.
“There may not be time for an official warning, so once the shaking stops, head immediately inland until you’re outside of the evacuation zones.”
Donaldson said coastal residents should search their address on the council website (ashburtondc.govt.nz/tsunami) and see if any of their property is within a tsunami evacuation zone.
ECan senior scientist - natural hazards, Helen Jack, said the likelihood of a tsunami being created close to Ashburton’s coast is small, and the biggest tsunami threats for the district are those created by large earthquakes on
the Hikurangi or Kermadec subduction zones (to the east and north of the North Island), the Puysegur subduction zone (to the south of Fiordland), or by large earthquakes off the coasts of central or South America.

Now they’ve been able to announce that they have acquired what is currently known as The Crossroads Lodge, formerly known just as The Lodge, in the centre of Methven.

The trust was established to fundraise
and oversee, the development of a new aged care facility for Methven to replace the existing location, Methven House.
With it also comes the separate apartments next door to the main building.
“This is an exciting development for Methven,” Methven Care Trust chairperson, Janine Holland, said.
“We have operated aged care out of Methven House for many years and our former maternity hospital has served the community tremendously well.
“However, due to an ever-changing regulatory environment and evolving residents’ needs, it’s time to move into a modern premises.”
Using the existing rooms in the main building, the goal was to create up to 20 rooms, with the six two-bedroomed apartments in the separate block to be repurposed for independent retirement living.
Since its establishment, the Methven Care Trust has raised over $1.8 million, which initially was set out to be earmarked for the construction of new premises on gifted land in Camrose Estate.
Rising costs, restraints of development and a lengthening timeline to complete the building from scratch meant that the Crossroads development was a much more appealing prospect for the trust.
Holland said the work required to get the building up to the required standards was expected to take about two years to complete and that further fundraising efforts would be required to be able to complete the project.
“The trust has been able to make this purchase using funds raised to date, assistance from Advance Ashburton, who admin-
ister the former Lochhead Charitable Trust funds, as well as support from private donors.
“However, we will be looking for assistance to retrofit the building to make it appropriate for aged care.”
The trust intends to work closely alongside the Methven Aged Persons Welfare Association throughout the process to ensure all the operational needs required for the new building are met.
More details on the project will be outlined at the Methven Care Trust’s annual meeting on Tuesday, December 13, at the Methven Golf Club.

They’re sisters and childhood sexual abuse survivors walking and biking the length of New Zealand, but they’re not the brave ones in their awareness trek.
Libby Taylor and Kate Hattaway, from the wider Auckland region, began their 2100km journey from Cape Rēinga on October 1, they passed through Ashburton at the weekend and hope to finish in Bluff in about two weeks.
It’s an emotional journey, but it’s not just about their own healing for the sisters now in their 60s and who were victims of childhood sexual abuse over 50 years ago. Their abuse has had a perva-
Via their 30 scheduled supporter town and city walks on their Aotearoa journey, the pair had met many sexual abuse survivors, who had never spoken to anyone about their experience and had carried their trauma in silence.
But they turned up to show their support as the sisters passed through, often observing from a distance.
“I think they are incredibly brave because those first steps in your healing journey are so hard,’’ Hattaway said, relaxing in their van on a break from the heat and wind on Saturday in Ashburton.
“Just a week ago, a woman stood on top of the path with her husband with tears just streaming down her face. We went over and listened to her story and held her
hand. She showed so much courage to even get there.
“To be part of that is incredible. Those people are the brave ones.’’
Through their initiative called REOSA – Ripple Effects of Sexual Abuse – the pair hope to raise awareness about the impact the abuse has on the survivor and those around them.
“By sharing our stories, it helps people to move forward as well,” Hattaway said.
The idea of the walk came up about two years ago when the sisters were horrified to learn of the sexual abuse statistics in New Zealand.
According to Help, a sexual abuse prevention and victim support organisation, one in three girls in New Zealand aged under 16 were victims to sexual abuse.
But it’s not just a female issue, with one in six New Zealand males under the age of 18 also sexually
abused. Worse, about 90 per cent of New Zealand males who take their own life before the age of 14 have been sexually abused.
One of their other sisters, Anna Arndt, was also affected by sexual abuse and she knows the walk, which she had been involved in at times, would provide hope to thousands.
But they all believed that education and empowerment were keys to tackling the issue, which is why the sisters were giving out two books along the way to help contribute to a better understanding of sexual abuse.
Keeping Our Tamariki Safe from Sexual Harm was about providing parents and caregivers with the signs of sexual abuse to look out for in children, while Only for Me was for young people to understand their own bodies and keep themselves safe.
The pair’s days were long, start-
ing about 6am and finishing after 10pm, but Taylor, a trauma counsellor, know it’s been worth it.

“We’re two sisters, who are doing this journey together and for me that’s incredibly, incredibly powerful,’’ she said.
“There’s been many tears shed but tears of solidarity really.”
Hattaway, too, had said the reaction on their walk had been “unbelievable’’.
“We’ve had so much feedback from survivors and families and organisations saying thank you for what you are doing and for talking about the ripple effects. Because no one talks about the ripple effects of sexual abuse.
“So, if survivors out there, who feel isolated, can see this and feel supported and be able to make a connection, I just think that’s incredible.”

Ashburton’s Gemma Wragg can smile about it now, but for many years her ultimate goal was to save the world. It’s true.
“I always knew I wanted to help people,’’ said Wragg, who became law firm Tavendale and Partners’ first chief executive officer in January.
“I wasn’t sure exactly how I was going to do that. For years and years, and probably for too long actually, my response when asked what I wanted to do for a job was to save the world – possibly a little optimistic.’’
Well, you can’t knock optimism and it’s one of the qualities of the personable and ambitious 31-year-old, who is something of a high-flyer in the legal eagle world. She’s been in the profession for eight years, joined Tavendale and Partners as a solicitor in 2018 and has quickly made an impression.
She’s gained a promotion every year, culminating in becoming its inaugural CEO as part of a governance and management structure overhaul for a clearly progressive organisation that started 21 years ago with just four staff and has now grown to a team of 75 across Ashburton and Christchurch.
“While I was really enjoying the legal work, particularly the agri-law I was doing in recent years, I kept getting distracted with internal projects,’’ Wragg said.
“I had lots of ideas about the firm, our people and how we could keep getting better at what we do. Fortunately, I work for an organisation that is very open to change and new ideas so they embraced my thoughts and eventually asked whether I would prefer to shift into a leadership rather than legal role.’’
And so here we are – a young woman making her leadership mark in an industry where males generally dominate, especially in key management positions.
It’s not bad going for a lass off the farm, who calls Mid Canterbury home and who was head girl at Ashburton College way back in 2009 when we imagine that superhero, saving-the-world ideology probably first started.
“I loved growing up in Mid Canterbury on a farm with my three brothers,’’ she said.
“We moved to a few different farms, with my parents only moving out of the district to Whitecliffs in Selwyn when I was
at university. But Ashburton is still my hometown.’’
And that hometown girl’s love for law and all it entails has certainly blossomed, especially given some natural uncertainty after graduating with a double degree. Her other degree was Human Geography, which was people and development focused. She’s since gone on to complete a postgraduate LLM (Master of Laws) degree with first class honours, specialising in children’s rights under international law.
“When I first came out of university, I thought I would just give this law thing a go for a while,’’ she said.
“But I enjoyed the practice of law more than I thought I would and realised the important role lawyers play in helping people achieve what they want – buying a new house, setting up a new business, having surety in succession planning. It’s a really rewarding job.’’
Personally, it’s been even more rewarding for Wragg in recent times, having picked up a significant future leader award for an organisation with a mouthful of a name – the Australasian Legal Practice Management Association (ALPMA).
It was the first year of the awards and Wragg was the only New Zealander to take home a gong across eight categories. Her award recognised outstanding leadership and management contributions from the next generation of law firm leaders, with nominees spanning Austral ia, New Zealand and the Pacific. And was she surprised? You bet.
“I knew I was part of a shortlist of three finalists, but I am so new to my role that I thought it would perhaps go to someone who was a little further along their leadership journey.’’
The good news didn’t stop there, with Wragg also being appointed the sole New Zealand director on the ALPMA board. She’ll sit on a board with a director from each of the Australian states. For her and her firm’s profile, it’s a big deal.
“I’m really excited to see what this opportunity brings both me and Tavendale and Partners.’’
But as excited and nice as any award win is – and receiving hers in the Gold Coast would’ve been extra nice no doubt – Wragg was more humbled at the nomination put forward by her team.
So far, Mid Canterbury has been lucky, according to David Acland, Mid Canterbury Meat and Wool Chair for Federated Farmers.
The district has had little land converted to widespread forestry at the expense of good sheep and beef growing country.
“Land values in Canterbury are still too high for forestry and car bon farming to come in and buy the district up,” he says.
“It’s not viable.
“I don’t see it as a Mid Canter bury issue that swathes of farm land will be taken up by forestry. But if you have read the Environ ment Canterbury report for Mid Canterbury on new policy regu lations for water you would think that with the restrictions the only viable option for dairy farmers would be afforestation.”
So Mid Canterbury may be in an enviable position and re search commissioned by Feder ated Farmers and Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) found 54 per cent of New Zealanders sup ported a limit on the amount of fossil fuel emissions that could be offset with new pine forests.
Meanwhile, almost two-thirds of Kiwis opposed foreign compa nies buying New Zealand farms to offset their emissions.

sioned by B+LNZ, showed more than 52,000ha of land was pur chased by forestry interests in 2021, a 36 per cent increase on the previous two years, and up from 7000ha in 2017.
This is far more than the 25,000ha a year of exotics that the Climate Change Commission had suggested were needed to achieve New Zealand’s climate change objectives.
Of the 175,000ha of land pur chased for afforestation over the past five years, about 134,500ha was grassland suitable for sheep and beef.
If 100 per cent of this suitable land was planted, B+LNZ expect ed this would lead to a decline of around 1 million stock units, equating to an annual farm pro duction loss of $170 million at the farm gate and a cumulative
production loss of $540 million from progressive planting from 2017 to 2022.
“We have been tracking whole farm sales data on a regular basis and we’re increasingly alarmed at the scale, pace, and style of land use change across the country,” said Sam McIvor, chief executive of B+LNZ.
“In 2017, only 7000 hectares of sheep and beef farmland was
sold with the intention to con vert into forestry, so the jump to 52,000 hectares in 2021 is a ham mer blow for our farmers and our sector.”
Chief executive of Align Farms Rhys Roberts says his operation has recently embarked on a new farming strategy, converting two of its five dairy farms to re-generative (regen) farming.
And he wants to share his experiences with the rest of us at a regenerative field day on December 7, 10am to 1.30pm at 2581 Hackthorne Road, Westerfield.
“We will be sharing our data and learnings with plenty of time for questions. Attendees should be able to walk away from the day with an understanding of both the successes and failures with robust multi-year data to back it up,” Roberts said.
The transition of Align’s Claireview Farm to regen farming started last year with 20 per cent of grazed area converted to regen paddocks with another 30 per cent converted this year.
Another farm will begin its transition to regen this year and will be operating 100 per cent regen by the end of 2024.
Roberts said there were about five principles that regen agriculture stood for “but for us, we increased the diversity of the pasture species so instead of just ryegrass and clover we added in chicory, plantain, and different types of grasses and clovers”.
The paddocks were sprayed out and direct drilled, he said.
“Some we over-sowed directly into the grass species. On highly compacted soils we used 15 to 20 different species and some with deep tap roots that penetrated to aerate the soil. But when this wasn’t needed, we sprayed out or direct drilled into the soil or over-sowed existing pastures.
“The farm managed regeneratively hasn’t seen any urea for three seasons now. That is a positive,” he said.
“Productivity is reduced but it depends on what you are trying to achieve. It’s a matter of fine-tuning things, Roberts said.
He said it would take about five years to get any accurate data on regen farming however Align Farms is looking to take more of its land over to regen in due course, he said.
“We have been doing this for about three years now. We publicise all our data live. As far as success goes, it depends on what success looks like I guess,” Roberts said.

Environment Canterbury (ECan) biosecu rity officers will spend most of November inspecting more than 200 properties in Hurunui and Kaikōura to identify and re move an invasive plant – nassella tussock.
But Mid Canterbury shouldn’t think it’s out of the woods as nassella was a pest that was spreading across most of Canterbury.
It displaces other grasses leaving pasture unpalatable to stock and makes it more dif ficult for native species to grow.
Region-wide, there were more than 1450 properties where nassella had been found or had historically occurred. This covered more than 400,000 hectares across Canter bury.
ECan had been inspecting properties over the past few months and was now helping landowners on properties with higher-density populations. These prop erties contribute the vast majority of the seeds distributed annually.
Northern biosecurity team leader Mat thew Smith said most land occupiers had been fantastic to work with, however, there were still some who had left their control work too late or had not booked a contrac tor early enough in the year.
“

It’s an important job as mature plants can produce up to 100,000 seeds. Seeds can then be dispersed to neighbouring land by wind, water, stock, clothing and machinery.
“However, it’s important we recognise those who are continuing to undertake this work on time and to a high standard, as farmers are under a significant amount of pressure at the moment,” Smith said.
Originally from South America, nassella was first reported in North Canterbury in the early 1900s.
Because of its impact on the environ ment and farming, nassella was recognised as a serious pest by the 1940s and by the 1950s it had become so prevalent in parts of Canterbury that farmers were forced off their land.
Today, nassella is reasonably widespread throughout New Zealand’s east coasts. The Marlborough and Canterbury regions are worst affected.

The numbers and statistics are truly depressing. Horri fying and shameful. Check them out below be cause it’s alarming and doesn’t say much about one of the biggest issues we face in New Zealand – that being sexual abuse.
One in six New Zealand males under the age of 18 are sexually abused.
About 90 per cent of New Zea land males who take their own life before the age of 14 have been sexually abused.
One in three girls aged under 16 have been sexually abused. It’s those appalling stats, and the widespread effect that sexual abuse incidents can and does spread to and involve for years if not forever, that is the driving force for two inspirational Auck land sisters.
Daryl HoldenThey’re Libby Taylor and Kate Hattaway. On page 4, you can read their story of hope and sup port about their length of New Zealand journey where they’re walking and biking a whopping 2100km in about 50 days to raise awareness and hopefully force some change around sexual abuse.
And it’s as personal as it gets for the sisters, now in their 60s, because they were both sexually abused over 50 years ago. So, too, was another sister, who’s completing part of the walk down the country, which finish
es in Bluff in about two weeks. Through their initiative called REOSA – Ripple Effects of Sexual Abuse – the pair hope to raise awareness about the impact the abuse has on the sur vivor and those around them.
“By sharing our stories, it helps people to move forward as

I wish I knew who was going to win today’s New Zealand Trotting Cup. But I’m just not sure.
Usually it’s pretty simple, there’s three, maybe four horses who could win, and the rest are real ly just there to help make things happen. Today, it’s different.
There is a realistic chance that with the right run, and the right amount of luck, that perhaps any where around eight of the 15 hors es who will take their place in the race could win. And that makes it both fun, but also difficult.
Fun in the fact that the un
known is always intriguing. Diffi cult in the fact it becomes awfully tricky to narrow down your selec tions and settle on the horse you want on top.
So, how do you get there with out throwing a dart at the board and seeing what you come up with? Convictions are usually my go to method and finding the one with the least of them.
And that’s how I’ve come to find Spankem on top of my list.
He’s an old boy these days, and at seven is the oldest horse in the field alongside Australian raider, Majestic Cruiser. But with age, comes experience. He’s been around and gone to war more of ten than most in this field, and with that comes a mental edge that can be critical when things get difficult.
He’s five times placed over the distance. Has performed in this race before. Loves a standing start and has one of the best in the business sitting behind him in Natalie Rasmussen. And she’s actually one of the key factors in why he came out on top.
Natalie had a choice last week to drive either Spankem or for mer race winner Self Assured, and after his cracking run at Ash burton and his excellent work last Wednesday she chose him.
She’s an excellent judge of where a horse is at and sum ming up a situation. If she’s hap py enough to drive him over the horse who was, at one stage, the dominant favourite for this race then that’s good enough for me and I’m happy to follow her con fidence in Spankem.

Of course, that doesn’t guaran tee success. But all those factors combined, and the few linger ing question marks over some of the rivals, make Spankem a great each way bet today.
As for the rest of them? Well, take your pick.
Self Assured has won before, so no worries there. Akuta wouldn’t be there if Mark Purdon didn’t think he could win. Copy That has good manners and the right man in the bike in Blair Orange. Old Town Road is the real un known but oozes natural talent.
Rock N Roll Doo could be the best Australian horse we’ve seen here in decades, and BD Joe’s sec ond row draw is only really a bad draw after the race.
A lot to think about, yes. But that’s what makes it fun and what
should ensure that today’s NZ Trotting Cup is one of the best we’ve seen in a very long time.

Building on the successful previous events, the 2022 Ruralco Longbeach Coastal Challenge marks a milestone in the event’s history as the 15th event.
With mountain bike (12km, 23km & 35km), run (5km, 12km & 21km) and walk (5km & 12km) events remaining, with this year the organising committee welcoming the E-bike community with their own 23km race category.
The histor y of the electric bike begins in the 1890s with three different Americans developing technology to assist a bike rider to travel further and faster.
But it was really another one hundred years before the next evolution of E-bikes.
Japanese automotive company Yamaha developed the pedal assist bike in 1993, and American car icon Lee Iococca founded EV Global Motors in 1997, which was an early effort to popularise the electric bike.
A new category for E Bikes will be introduced this year during the 15th running of the Longbeach Coastal Challenge.

Mid Canterbury’s Adam Williamson starred for the New Zealand Heartland XV on Sunday, as they demolished the New Zealand Police team 84-14 in Taupo. Williamson, who this year co-captained the Mid Canterbury Heartland side, was the only Hammer to gain selection into the national team for their one-o fixture over the weekend. He came o the bench in the match – running hard and strong early in the second half for some big metres, before he succumbed to what appeared to be a shoulder injury which sidelined him for the remainder of the game.
Aorangi’s Masters Men golfers have finished ninth at the Freyberg Masters in Motueka.
The five-strong side. which featured three Mid Canterbury-based players and a Mid Canterbury reserve, were at the top of the South Island for all of last week, matching their own skills against peers from all around the country over the competition.
While perhaps not as high as they would have liked to finish, the Aorangi side produced some excellent golf throughout the week, and but for a couple of close matches going the wrong way could well have worked their way into the top five with a little more luck.
The nine-round competition, which included a bye, began last Monday and ran through until the weekend with players taking to the greens for full rounds of match play against rivals from other regions.
Aorangi picked up victories throughout the week against Hawke’s Bay, Tasman and Southland, but could have easily grabbed a few more with close matches against Taranaki, Manawatu/Whanganui, Canterbury and North Harbour.
Ashburton’s Jeff Hewitt enjoyed a good week out, winning four of his eight individual match-ups and halving another
to give him a record of better than 50 per cent for the weekend.
Mayfield’s Andrew Peck was similar, gaining three wins and two halves for a steady week on the greens while Nigel Heney, who played in the No.1 spot for the side grabbed three wins for the week.
The event was taken out by the Wellington side, who defended their title of 12 months ago with a dominant display, winning all of their matches to be well clear of the second placed North Harbour and also Canterbury who finished in third spot.
The Black Caps will play Pakistan in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup after a dramatic last day of pool play. South Africa’s 13-run loss to the Netherlands opened the door for Pakistan, who then beat Bangladesh by five wickets, while India beat Zimbabwe by 71 runs. So on Wednesday New Zealand play Pakistan and on Thursday India play England. The final day of Group 2 action started with a bang as the brave Netherlands stormed to a 13-run win over Temba Bavuma’s shell-shocked team, breathing new life into Pakistan’s semi-final hopes. It ended with India finishing top of the group and soaking up the cheers of a crowd of 82,507 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground with a 71-run demolition of Zimbabwe.
The Black Ferns have one final hurdle to get past to lift the Rugby World Cup trophy for a sixth time. In a repeat of the 2017 final New Zealand face England on Saturday at what is on track to be a sold out Eden Park. New Zealand and England had met in four previous finals and the Black Ferns had won each time. Black Ferns forwards coach Whitney Hansen said a number of England players had extra motivation to knock over the defending champions. “They’ve been pining for this for probably over five years,” she said.
The Tech Stags continued their unbeaten start to the 2022-2023 senior cricket season on the weekend, but will have one eye looking forward as they prepare for a clash with the other side yet to taste defeat this coming weekend.
On the Ashburton Domain on Saturday, the defending Tweedy Cup champions were far from convincing, but managed to get the job done in their clash against Pleasant Point, winning by 47 runs.
Batting first, the Stags scored 146 all out –well below some of their previous tallies so far this season, and there were a few nerves about a good Point batting line-up being able to chase their total down. Sam Clark led the way with the bat scoring 33 which alongside contributions from Des Kruger (29) and Sam Bennett (26n/o) accounted for the majority of their side’s total.
With a small target to defend, getting the job done with the ball and doing it early was paramount and luckily for them, Harry Jones was up to the task. The opening seamer tore through Point’s top order, taking four wickets to leave their guests reeling at 4-32 with their best batsmen back in the sheds.
Kruger then came into the bowling attack and all but repeated the dose, grabbing three wickets of his own on his way to 3-11.
Jones tidied up the tail end as well for good measure, finishing the match with an honours board effort of 6-19 off his 9.2 overs – continuing his excellent run of form in recent weeks.
The win sets up a top of the table clash in Ashburton with Celtic Senior – a match which could well determine the favouritism tag in the race for the title.
Unfortunately, Allenton’s scores from their match against Celtic A weren’t available at the time of publication.
A few more questions than there were answers, perhaps.
Mid Canterbury took the final step in their preparation towards the Hawke Cup season which begins in a couple of weeks on the weekend, falling to Canterbury Country on the Ashburton Domain Oval by 92 runs on Sunday.
And while results right now mean for nothing, for coach Bevan Ravenscroft there’s some serious debate to be had as he looks to settle on his final playing group for the coveted cricketing competition.
Using the match as an opportunity to get players out into the middle and see how they would fare, Ravenscroft might be a little more certain in his mind about the core of the group, but the fringes are still very much shrouded in uncertainty.
Canterbury Country won the toss on Sunday morning and elected to head out to the middle with the bat in hand for the first innings.
Mana Singh struck quickly for the home side, grabbing a wicket in his second over, and things looked bright.
Steady partnerships from there though, kept the visitors in the hunt and while wickets fell, they worked their way through to 174-5 before the Mid Canterbury attack really came into its own.
Singh’s second spell near the end of
the 50 overs netted him another two wickets to take him to three for the day, while Tom Innes was as dangerous when he returned as well, claiming three late wickets as Canterbury Country scored 222 for nine off their 50 overs.
Satwant Singh was Mid Canterbury’s other major contributor, with two wickets of his own.
With a decent target to chase, Mid Canterbury had an opportunity to show their skills with the willow, and after Sam Clark took 14 runs off the first over
it appeared that was exactly what was going to happen.
But when his fellow opener, Angus Jemmett was run out a few overs later, things started to go awry.
He was one of three Mid Canterbury batsmen to fall foul of some dodgy running between the wickets and sharp Canterbury Country fielding.
Satwant Singh looked to steady the ship, scoring 20 before he fell and he combined with Des Kruger who was called into the side late. Kruger was his usual stoic self out in the centre.
He scored 59 off 76 deliveries, but ultimately fell looking to press on late in the game with Mid Canterbury still needing close to a ton of runs to win the match.
The green and golds were eventually all out for 131 in their chase in the 36th over.
Ravenscroft will now need to sit down and look at the two warm-up matches, and take into account the club form of some of his players before he decides on who will face South Canterbury in the Hawke Cup opener in Ashburton in a fortnight.
