Food needed more than ever

An annual Ashburton community food drive will be more important than ever as families grapple with a cost-of-living crisis.

That’s the feeling of Toot for Tucker organisers and volunteers ahead of the November 21 event.

One of those volunteers is Ashburton County Lions’ secretary Jan Stonyer, who has been involved with Toot for Tucker food drive in one form or another for over a decade.

“Every can of baked beans, or

Volunteers from a range of organisations, headed up by the Ashburton County Lions, will hit the streets from 5pm next Monday. You will hear the collectors toot their vehicle horns when they’re in your street, with food bags to be delivered around Ashburton soon to anyone who would like to donate.

The public’s donations are vital because they would help restock local foodbanks with in-date, non-perishable goods. Those donations would then be shared between Presbyterian Support, St Vincent de Paul and Salvation Army.

And Stonyer, who has seen

the event grow, knows that next week’s food run has even more significance.

That’s because of the financial challenges many are facing simply to provide food for their families.

Another to understand that scenario and its community effect is Salvation Army lieutenant Elizabeth Walker-Ratu. She experienced her first Toot for Tucker event last year and was amazed with the amount of food donated to organisations like hers to then disperse and make available to those in need.

“It really helps us stock up,“ Walker-Ratu said.

“It provides us a good amount of food to fill the shelves during the Christmas period.’’

Concerns at Methven pathway placement

That was how Methven Community Board chairperson Kelvin Holmes described the situation with the placement of a new unsealed footpath in Methven.

The construction of an unsealed footpath along State Highway SH77, from the corner of Racecourse Road to the Ōpuke Thermal Pools and up to the Methven Walkway, has been awarded to Fulton Hogan.

It is scheduled for completion before the end of the year but its start has been delayed as its placement is under scrutiny from the community board.

Council staff met with members of the community board and Ōpuke Thermal Pools last week and the work has been put on hold until the alignment of the path is resolved.

At its inaugural meeting at the end of October, the board requested an update on the impending construction of the footpath due to concerns about its positioning and drainage issues associated with potential flood risks.

Robin Jenkinson raised the alarm that the plan was to place

the footpath down the middle of the swale.

“All they are going to do is create a gravel drain,” he said.

Holmes said he understood the path was supposed to be tucked in along the hedge line away from the swale and the road.

Councillor Rodger Letham said “it would be a waste of time” if it isn’t placed correctly.

“I think we need to dou-

ble-check it because we are just wasting time and money if it’s the wrong thing,” Letham said.

Where the footpath is going is an already popular walking route in an area where the community is campaigning for a speed reduction, from 100kph down to 50kph.

Deputy mayor and Methven resident, Liz McMillan, has previously said that the addition of the Ōpuke Thermal Pools along-

side two subdivisions has meant keeping the stretch of road at 100kph raises serious safety concerns.

A petition was presented to Waka Kotahi last year but the response was that it could not be actioned until 2024 under the existing land transport plan.

The introduction of a new setting of speed limits law in May will allow for reductions to be

considered at a regional level so could see the change made sooner.

The Methven Community Board sought clarification on the positioning of the planned unsealed footpath alongside State Highway 77 to Opuke Thermal Pools.

Dubbed ‘the longest road works in New Zealand’ by members of the community, the Walnut Avenue intersections upgrade is in its final days

Waka Kotahi and KiwiRail will complete the project ahead of schedule with an official ceremony on Friday.

“It’s been a long time so it will certainly be good to have the project finished and see the back of all those road cones,” Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown said.

“It’s looking pretty good and will be great to have the intersections up and running.”

The project replaces roundabouts at the intersections of Walnut Avenue and State Highway 1, and Walnut Avenue and West Street, with traffic lights and an upgrade of the rail crossing between the two intersections.

Testing of the new traffic and the railway crossing signals started last week to ensure the railway crossing interface is all properly working.

The finishing touches to the intersections, including the road markings, will be completed in the next few days before the lights are switched on.

Work began on the project, which had a $15 million budget, in August 2021 and had an 18-month timeline but it has been heavily criticised for being a drawn out process.

Waka Kotahi had completed the intersection upgrades and lights installation by May, but KiwiRail didn’t start work until late August which drew the ire of the community.

In June, Waka Kotahi and KiwiRail fronted the council to explain that there was no delay and the project remained on schedule as planned.

Brown said it was strange how the two parts of the project couldn’t coalesce closer together.

The project has been delivered on time, as far as the official schedule, but the final cost of the project is not yet known.

For locals glad to see the end of the traffic cones it will be temporary as they will shift south to Tinwald next year for the start of

the Tinwald corridor – another joint Waka Kotahi and KiwiRail project.

The project will have traffic lights installed at the SH1/Lagmhor Road/Agnes Street intersection and an upgraded railway crossing.

Brown said the message has been strongly delivered by the council that the community does not want to see the Tinwald project drag on.

“Hopefully the lessons learnt [at Walnut Avenue] can be taken into account in Tinwald to make the process amicable to road users with minimal disruption in the shortest possible time.”

Waka Kotahi is scheduled to update the council on the Tinwald project in December.

By this time next week the Walnut Avenue intersection will be fully operational, with traffic lights switched on.

Wheelie innovative stuff from Ashburton College students

Every teenager loves getting a new set of wheels but Ashburton College students have put a different spin on it.

Twenty-three Year 11 and 12 students, all part of the college’s technology metal class, demonstrated their innovation and mechanical design skills in a human-powered transport project, which took some of them two terms to complete.

“The class worked on the brief that it (their project) had to be made from bicycle parts, no more than three wheels, and fit through the classroom door and be human powered,’’ Ashburton College’s teacher in charge of automotive and trades, Patrick Neal, said.

They used discarded bikes from the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park to reconfigure them into another type of human-powered transportation. And the innovative juices certainly flowed, with trikes and shopping trolley wheels on the back and various BMX bike parts at the front completing one type of contraption. Tandem bikes, customed choppers and sidecars were among other designs that emerged, all of them funky and creative.

“Some students copied existing designs, whilst others were very creative,’’ Neal said.

The project also highlighted to students just what could be achieved using spare parts, a healthy dose of Kiwi ingenuity and clever workmanship.

“Yes, it certainly opened some of their eyes to possibilities.’’

But it wasn’t just about fun either. The students earned NCEA credits and engineering industry training organisation (ITO) unit standards for their hard work.

Fencing rethink crucial to plan

A new electric fencing system has allowed a Mid Canterbury farm to run a sharp rotational grazing system usually only seen on dairy farms, says Glenview farm manager Jack Dwyer.

Across 475 hectares of some of New Zealand’s most scenic farmland in Mid Canterbury, Glenview, a beef farming system owned by former Anzco Foods founder Sir Graeme Harrison has put its first foot forward.

Harrison’s total farm area covered over 2300 hectares and encompassed properties at Mt Alford, Pudding Hill and Highbank. The most recent addition was Glenview, where the farm had been completely overhauled with the new permanent electric fencing system.

“It is an intensive operation, so we want to make it pay for itself,” Dwyer said. “To help us manage our animals effectively, we tore out almost all the fencing and refenced more than 60kms of the property using an electric fencing solution, including powering it up with energizers.”

Each paddock was about eight hectares in size, divided in the middle with a two-wire fence. This allowed sheep to go underneath, but cattle to be effectively managed. There were water troughs one-quarter and three-quarters along the two-wire fence. It meant each four-hectare half could be split into four one-hectare or eighthalf-hectare grazing strips.

“This set up means we can run short sharp rotational grazing where we get mobs of 40 to 50

cattle doing a 24-day rotation in one eight-hectare paddock if the growth is adequate,” Dwyer said.

As the grazing rotation continued into summer, lambs were brought into the system and replaced cattle in some paddocks.

Mobs of between 800 and 1400 lambs followed in the rotation and were given the full eight hec-

tares to graze out.

“It’s been a system of trial and error. We’ve spent the last few years figuring out what works and what doesn’t, but the system and gear we now have has been absolutely key to helping us manage feed and maximise animal productivity,” Dwyer said. “It also allows us to easily drop out halves

of paddocks to be cut for supplementary feed.”

Across all the farms, the operation runs a total of 2700 perendale ewes, with plans to lift that number to about 4000 over the next couple of years.

It calved 500 angus cows this season and last season raised 240 angus steers for Five Star Beef

and finished 830 friesian bulls, and

with the hope to see those numbers rise in the next few seasons.

Voting is now open for the Ruralco board of directors’ election with three candidates vying for two vacancies on the board.

Director Tony Coltman was seeking re-election as per the co-operative’s election rotation rules. He was elected to the board in 2016 and was manager and director of a 3400-cow equity partnership near Dunsandel, a press release said.

Also seeking election were Mid Cantabrians, Kate Beaumont-Smith, and Rhea Booker. Beaumont-Smith was a dairy farmer who had been contract milking for the last three seasons and was formerly a lawyer in Mid Canterbury, England and Wales.

Booker was a chartered accountant with a dairy farming background and was an equity partner in a small dry stock farm and calf-rearing operation.

The board was made up of five farmer-elected directors (Jessie Chan, Kate Acland, Andrew Barlass, Sir David Carter, and Tony Coltman), and two independent directors (Sue Lindsay and Brent Wheeler) who were appointed by the board.

As per the co-operative rules, all elected directors were on a threeyear rotation. This year, chair Jessie Chan was retiring by rotation, and was not seeking re-election.

“We are happy to once again be

holding an election for our board of directors, with three nominations being received. This is an exciting time to join Ruralco’s board of directors. The calibre and capability of the board is extremely high, and it is a place where directors can thrive and help to shape the strategic direction of a growing business,” Chan said.

“The election process is essential to ensure we have good shareholder engagement. As a co-operative, our shareholders own the business, which means it is their business and they need to have a say. This election process determines how all shareholders retain control of their co-operative.

“It is important people engage in the voting process, and we encourage as many shareholders as possible to vote and exercise their right to have their say,” Chan said.

All registered voters had received an email with a link to the voting website, with voting taking place between now and this year’s 59th Annual General Meeting which would be held on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. Shareholders could vote online, via proxy, or at the AGM.

“We have engaged electionnz. com, an independent election management company to manage the voting process for the 2022 election,” Chan said.

Pushback on emissions

When it comes to emissions pricing, DairyNZ says no deal is better than a bad deal –and only a fair and reasonable system will be accepted for farmers.

The industry organisation’s chair, Jim van der Poel, said the Government’s emissions pricing proposal threatened the viability of farming businesses and rural communities and was not acceptable for farmers.

“DairyNZ is committed to securing a fair pricing system for farmers and we would like to see the Government revert to the He Waka Eke Noa recommendations put forward in May,” van der Poel said.

“The Government’s suggestion it has given the sector what we asked for – with ‘small tweaks’ – is incorrect.”

“Changes to the way prices will be set and limiting the recognition farmers can

get for planting has thrown the proposal off-kilter. We want an enduring system and that means we need to get back to a place that works for everyone.”

DairyNZ stands firmly behind the sector’s original He Waka Eke Noa proposal that was co-designed in good faith with the Government sitting around the table.

“We must reduce our emissions, but we can’t drive blindly towards targets at all costs. We have to remember why we are doing this in the first place. The Paris Agreement is about reducing global emissions, not just New Zealand’s emissions.”

Farmers have until November 18 to give feedback on the Government’s proposal.

DairyNZ is holding events nationwide until November 14 to discuss concerns, and the next steps, with dairy farmers.

The Foundation for Arable Research’s CROPS 2022 takes place near Ashburton on November 23, with more than 500 farmers and industry representatives expected at FAR’s Chertsey arable research site.

Women’s rugby – you’ve arrived

Barcelona, Spain. Of all the places, that’s where my mind drifted back to after watching the Black Ferns’ stunning Women’s Rugby World Cup triumph.

Because 20 years ago, I was one of only a handful of reporters covering the 2002 Women’s Rugby World Cup in Barcelona where the Black Ferns also won, again beating England in the final.

But what I remember most from back then – apart from the players’ skills and their passion – was a conversation I had with celebrated captain Farah Palmer and long-standing coach Darryl Suasua, one of the key movers and promoters of the women’s game in its early days.

“How are we going to sell women’s rugby to the world, to get people to take it seriously so

that you don’t have world cups played in stadiums with so few fans?,’’ I asked.

They both looked at each other and said it would take time but the potential to make women’s rugby a go-to event, and entertainment for male and female fans of all ages, was clearly there. Believe us, they said.

Well, at a sold-out Eden Park in Auckland on Saturday night, and in a glorious festival of rugby that was the World Cup in the past seven weeks, I think we saw that potential realised.

We witnessed the landscape for women’s rugby in this country change almost before our eyes. Those brave Black Ferns played the game the way it’s meant to be – with power, skill and confidence that comes from really loving what you do – but they also did it in a style and with openness that’s captured everyone’s attention. And that approach is kind of something new for all of us, to be fair. Because that sort of thing has been mostly unseen in many of those other New Zealand rugby teams, especially the All Blacks, who are often stony-faced, silent and media-managed individuals not able to reveal their true personality.

Well, that’s not the way for our Black Ferns, our so relatable world champion superstars. The genuine pleasure they

demonstrated in front of massive crowds through the world cup added to their charm, and made the fans love them even more.

They clearly know they’re in the entertainment business, sending an electrifying message to all those involved in rugby about the importance of connecting with your community.

Even if they had lost the final to England on Saturday, the Black Ferns would still have secured their place in the nation’s hearts and locked in a generation of fans.

So, it may’ve taken 20 years, but we got there. That’s probably why few were as delighted on Saturday night as much as the now Dr Palmer, wife of Black Ferns’ assistant coach Wesley Clark.

Dr Palmer is someone who’s

achieved everything in the game, including winning three world cups, being Black Ferns’ captain for 10 years, being inducted into World Rugby’s Hall of Fame and having become the first woman on the New Zealand Rugby board – breaking a 124-year drought. Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, she also became an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to women’s rugby and sport.

But even in her wildest dreams, Saturday’s tournament climax and the sight of that raucous, fan-loving crowd in full noise and loving every minute of it, would probably have surprised even her.

It may’ve taken 20 years to get to that point but, boy oh boy, it’s been well and truly worth the wait.

Getting it right when it counts

It wasn’t that long ago that people were calling for Codie Taylor to be dropped, TJ Perenara actually was, and Mark Telea wasn’t even in the conversation to get picked at all. All three played big roles in yesterday’s 31-23 win over Scotland at Murrayfield.

For a while there, it looked like this was going to be a throwback to when the All Blacks would routinely tear a side apart within the opening stages and leave them wondering just what happened.

The first 12 minutes or so was almost flawless, with Scott Barrett opening the scoring in very similar circumstances to Taylor’s first try last weekend.

The main thing we needed to see from this All Black team is the ruthlessness that has returned on attack, combined with the patience on defence. Ardie Savea’s turnover that eventually led to Telea’s first try was masterful, as the winger enjoyed a productive start to his test career.

But what happened next definitely was a throwback to a time that All Black fans would rather forget: earlier this year. The Scots

roared back like Ireland did in Dunedin and the Pumas did in Christchurch, frustrating the All Blacks with long periods of possession.

The penalty try from Anton Lienart-Brown’s tackle on Stuart Hogg was foolish, his absence due to the automatic yellow card meant the All Black centre was conspicuously absent when Scotland really start-

ed to dominate.

David Havili’s pass that led to the scores being level was so ill-judged Darcy Graham wasn’t even trying to catch it before he scooted away. The most alarming part of the rest of the first half was Scotland really should have scored two more tries and had a much higher lead than three points at the break.

The malaise continued into the

second half, with a string of needless penalties helping Scotland set up shop in the All Black half.

Finn Russell was happy to bang through penalties. As the temperature inside Murrayfield plummeted, hopes of history being made soared.

It took the emptying of the bench and rugby’s worst rule to arrest the situation for the All Blacks.

Codie Taylor’s turnover led to the sequence of events that led to Jack Dempsey being binned after he stuck his hand out to deflect a Perenara pass, which meant Scott Barrett could crash over for his second and put the All Blacks back in the lead.

After that it was simply a case of the All Blacks grinding it out, which was an encouraging sight for a team that did the same at Ellis Park and found a way to win in Melbourne. Telea’s finish for his second capped off a fine debut.

The All Blacks managed to turn a catastrophic sin binning and being down at halftime into a win, while managing to get on the right side (for the most part) of referee Frank Murphy when it counted.

Perenara’s constant chatter and decision-making certainly made a

difference in the backs after he was subbed on for Christie, while Taylor’s presence had the same effect on the forwards.

In a way, this was the most impressive part of the All Black performance. They’ve come a long way this season from being a team that plays badly and loses to one that can pull out the goods when it matters. Was it a great performance? No, because Scotland played all the rugby for the better part of an hour. Was it a good sign going forward? Considering that this has been almost a rebuilding on the go sort of year for the All Blacks, absolutely, because they still ended up winning. England at Twickenham next weekend stands as the final chance to answer questions about just where they’re at heading into a World Cup year.

Scotland should be disappointed, though. Unlike Wales last weekend, they had the winning of the game in their control and more importantly the belief, but they let their standards drop at the worst possible time. That’s twice in a row they’ve been within touching distance of their first ever win over the All Blacks, it may be a while before they get another chance.

Changes needed following Riccarton track fiasco

“Something definitely needs to change, you’re seeing it far too much over here at the moment,” he said.

Changes are needed immediately to the way New Zealand Racing manages their tracks according to visiting Australian jockey and Mid Canterbury native Daniel Stackhouse.

His calls come after an embarrassing end to Cup Week in Christchurch where Saturday’s New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton was abandoned due to safety concerns after just three of the 12 scheduled races.

Just what needs to change though and how it happens is going to be up to those in control of the industry.

“I’m not sure what the answer is, but it needs to be a collective management decision across the board, you had a meeting called off after a few races on Friday up in the North Island and then this today, it’s really hurting the industry.”

Stackhouse could have been forgiven to wanting to carry on with the meeting. He’d won all three races that were held before the abandonment, continuing a wonderful return home for the first time in 10 years.

“The day couldn’t have started much better,” he laughed.

“But at the end of the day the safety of everyone out there including the horses is paramount and the right decision was made.

“I went out and had a look at the track during the first inspection and you could see where the horse has slipped, there was about a metre and half long mark on the track that it had left – I didn’t really feel anything with any of my rides, but it only takes one in these instances for things to be looked at.”

Following the abandonment of Saturday’s meeting the decision was made to shift the remaining races to yesterday at Riccarton and in a good bit of luck for Stackhouse, he’s already altered his flights home meaning he could fulfil his riding engagements.

“I’ve got a bit lucky there, originally I was due to fly home on Sunday morning, but I wanted to catch up with a few of my mates after the races and decided to shift my flight so now I’m flying out on Tuesday which means I

can ride on Monday.”

Before yesterday’s catch-up meeting, Stackhouse had been one of, if not, the in-form jockey of the week. He picked up a winning double on Wednesday with Oso Savvy and Netty Spaghetti before starting Saturday with a triple-bang.

He claimed the first with $9 shot Ugo for Shane Kennedy and Anna Furlong, then picked up the second on board Oso Savvy who won again for him before coming out on top of a tight finish on board the Michael and Matt Pitman trained Star Ballot in the third.

“I’ve had a bit of luck which has been great, I’ve really got to thank Tommy Hazlett – he handled all my rides while I’m over here and he’s done rather well.”

Stackhouse had close to a full book of rides remaining yesterday including chances in two of the

afternoon’s major races.

Given the success of his return home he certainly wasn’t ruling out future working holidays back home.

“It’s been great, especially being able to catch up with everyone, I’ve really enjoyed it and would definitely like to do it again at some point.”

More than 15,000 people had flocked to Riccarton on Saturday for the final day of Cup Week but it took more than an hour for full realisation that the racing action for the day had been postponed.

In a huge financial disaster for the industry, the meeting would have drawn millions of dollars of turnover but instead Riccarton Park bosses and industry leaders were left licking their wounds following yet another potentially avoidable meeting abandonment.

Morrison continues form at the beach

Don Morrison chalked up a hard fought victory in Tinwald Cycling Club’s, Stoked Cycles, Netherby Meats, 48km handicap event around the Wakanui Beach block on Sunday.

The final outcome was decided in the shadow of the finish line with Morrison getting up to claim the major spoils.

Kenny Johnston produced his best performance of the season to secure second place.

Nina Bradford will be pleased with her day’s work, claiming the final podium position.

Dave Shurrock and Liz Wylie were in the thick of the finish to record fourth and fifth places respectively.

Scratch mark Michael Audeau led the chasing group in to record fastest time honours, riding the distance in 66.47.

The juniors and division 2 contested a 16km handicap event.

The juniors’ result was also decided in a group sprint, with Honor Bradford having the final say to lift the silverware.

Louie Audeau made it a good day for Team Audeau, securing the second place spoils.

Ryan Gallagher was hot on his heels in third place.

Charlotte Neal and Isabel Wall filled the top five spots.

Sixth placegetter Jack Gorrie rode the course in 28.26 to lift fastest time honours.

Katherine Gorrie took division 2 bragging rights from Janette Hooper.

Next week the club travels to Mount Somers to contest a 45km handicap event.

Topp Twins give Black Ferns the perfect pep talk

Two Kiwi entertainment icons, both facing a major battle with cancer, may have provided the New Zealand Black Ferns with the motivation they needed to go out and win the Rugby Women’s World Cup in Auckland on Saturday night.

In a fitting twist of fate, the hotel that the Topp Twins were staying in for their 40th anniversary show at Auckland’s Civic Centre last Monday, just happened to be the same hotel that the Black Ferns team were based out of during the final week of their preparations for Saturday night’s successful final against England.

As Dames Lynda and Jools Topp and their entourage arrived in the foyer on Monday, they met the Black Ferns side.

“We looked at them and went, ‘Oh my God it’s the Black Ferns’ and they looked at us and went ‘Oh my God it’s the Topp Twins’,” Dame Lynda Topp said last week.

“Automatically we were like, can we get a picture with you, and they asked the same thing back, so we stopped and grabbed a few pictures, it was great.”

That chance meeting in the foyer wasn’t to be all the interaction between the two groups though with an invitation extended to the Topp Twins by Black Ferns management to attend the team’s Club Night on the Tuesday.

“It’s a night they hold where they can just chill out a bit in their club’s colours and have a bit of a laugh. They were allowed one lowcarb beer each and it was a really fun night to be a part of.

“We just hung out with them and talked, but then gave them a bit of a pep talk as well. We told them that it didn’t matter if they won or lost on the weekend, they were to us, the best team in the world.

“Then we sang a song for them, it was really beautiful.”

The Black Ferns then went on from that night to make their final preparations for

Saturday’s World Cup final where they came from behind to beat England 34-31 in front of a sell-out crowd.

“We thought that was quite cool too, both the Topp Twins and the Black Ferns performed in front of sell-out crowds in Auckland in the same week.”

Double horror for seniors

The long weekend horrors struck both Mid Canterbury senior cricket sides on Saturday as they fell to defeat in South Canterbury’s Tweedy Cup.

The Tech Stags slumped to a huge defeat, their first of the season, at the hands of the now clear table-toppers, Celtic Senior on the Ashburton Domain while Allenton’s run of losses continued in Pleasant Point as well losing by seven wickets.

In Ashburton, the Stags were in trouble from the outset. A royal golden duck on the first ball of the innings for opener Jason Morrison set the tone as they were rattled and, eventually all bowled out for just 35 runs. The innings featured three ducks with Lachie Jemmett’s nine runs the side’s highest scoring effort in a horror innings out in the middle.

Celtic needed just nine overs to score the required runs and did so with just one batsman back in the sheds courtesy of an LBW from seamer, Alex Veint.

It’s a blow for the Stags who now slip back into the pack with Pleasant Point behind the Celtic side who have assumed full control at the top of the table.

Down in South Canterbury, a steady 71 from skipper Karmjeet Singh wasn’t enough to see his Allenton side grab their first win of the season against Pleasant Point.

Batting first the Allenton lads managed to get through 44 of the 50 overs with Singh facing more than 18 of those himself.

He stood tall and fended off challenge after challenge but had to watch on as those around him fell without really troubling the scorers. Only two of the side’s other batsmen reached double figures as they reached 145 runs.

College fall to five-wicket defeat

The Ashburton College 1st XI fell to their second defeat of the season in the Canterbury 1st XI Cup on Friday, losing by five-wickets to the current competition leaders Christ’s College Development XI.

Playing on Hagley Park, the AshColl side were hoping to really push their case in the match and set a good tone with the bat as they worked their way through to a more than competitive 198 all out in the 44th over.

That, in large, can be put down to a 77-run fifth wicket partnership between Jack Middleton and Hamish O’Reilly who really steadied the ship after a shaky start from the top order.

Middleton was able to carry his bat off the ground having scored a valuable 72 not out in a 103-ball stay in the middle. O’Reilly played his part too with a solid 45, but other than their major contributions it was slim pickings for the rest.

Tom Rosevear did add a valuable 18 runs as the ninth wicket which helped lift his side closer to the 200-run mark.

With the ball, AshColl managed to grab an early wicket through Lachie Jemmett but a 99-run second-wicket stand effectively took them out of the match. At 2 for 125 Christ’s were in cruise control and reached their target with just under 10 overs remaining.

Fletcher Hobbs grabbed two wickets in the bowling effort.

Despite the defeat, AshColl remain second on the standings and will now have to really target their final two matches in the round with the first of those against St Andrews 2nd XI in Ashburton this weekend.
