Bid to ‘smooth’ increases

Methven residents may need to temper their expectations around a possible cutback of proposed 15 per cent rates increase in the town.

A Methven Community Board member says any downturn of costs for Methven ratepayers would be welcomed, although it would bring little relief if it only applied during the first year of the district’s long-term plan.

But the Ashburton District Council has indicated during long-term plan deliberations that residents needed to be prepared to stump up costs.

A proposed annual residential increase of 14.86 per cent for Methven sparked outrage among many west of the Plains when it was revealed earlier this year.

Council staff have attempted to shuffle some costs around during long-term plan discussions which may result in an increase of around 8-9 per cent in the first year.

suggested during deliberations that a “smoothing” to the rates increase could be a fallacy for some in the community.

“It will transfer much of the angst to year two of the LTP which

of course is programmed to have its own increase,” he said.

“The smoothing over two years may not be as useful as councillors think and may in fact lead the community to believe they

were getting some relief, only to be somewhat surprised that it all came rushing back.”

Methven Community Board member Kelvin Holmes hoped the decrease was “not just for one year”.

“I don’t want to see them hide it for one year and then dump it on

the next year,” he said.

“Even if they knock off 4 per cent this year that will still be 20odd per cent over three years.

“But anything that is less will be welcomed by the community.”

It has not just been the hikes to rates which has aggravated Methven residents during long-term planning.

Doubts were raised around a proposal to install water meters throughout the district due to leaks in its water infrastructure.

Instead, councillors agreed last week to trial the move over one year in Methven, believing that was where the leakage issue was most significant.

Holmes, who backed the water meter proposal, believed there remained an element of mistrust around how council was presenting its arguments and sourcing its figures.

Council claimed an unaccounted water loss of 65 per cent in Methven between 2019-2020.

A total of 51 leaks, on both public and private properties, were identified by council staff during one-off investigations in July 2020.

Rakaia six rise to the Sky Tower Challenge

Luke Rushton, Jack Houston, Ben Lowry, Todd Ealam, Gareth Jonlin and Rob Tyzack all completed the climb up the 1106 steps carrying 25kg of kit in the donned and started category.

Rushton completed the time the fastest, in 13.39 minutes – the 56th fastest time out of the 616 entrants in the category, with Jack Houston close behind in 13.42 minutes.

Lowry (17.29), Ealam (20.05), Joblin (28.33) and Tyzack (30.39) may not have been as quick but still reached the top and helped to raise a total of $1.3 Million for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ. It had already been a big month of celebrations for the brigade, celebrating 70 years of the Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade.

It was officially established in 1951 with the official recorded joining date for the inaugural members being May 4, 1951.

Meanwhile, Methven fire chief Brent Anderson (23.17) along with Emma Murray (25.34) also completed the challenge in the donned and started category.

Mathew Duncan contested the firefighter of steel section – climbing to level 60 of the Sky Tower in full firefighter kit with a steel cylinder – completing his climb in 18.09 minutes.

The Methven trio raised $8635.

Southern Parallel Campus will go ahead despite rumours

Funding is “so secure” for the Southern Parallel Sports Campus at Lake Hood that it will definitely be established in the South Island, but its preference is Ashburton.

Its project team, led by executive director Catherine Stuart, said “operational funding is signed and sealed”.

However, Stuart is becoming concerned at “ill-informed rumours” by local people commenting on a range of issues including its financial structure.

She said the $70 million project is committed, based on the Ashburton District Council approving the resource consent.

“More importantly, Southern Parallel will enjoy up to 10 years of secured operational funding from coalition defence partners,” she said.

“We have significant grants to facilitate veteran programmes.”

Stuart has already purchased land on the site for future development. “I’ve secured one of

the block of the 38.75 hectares at the cost of several million and the other is under contract,” she says.

The resource consent application is currently being worked on to finalise details and Stuart said the intention is to submit it to council by the end of July.

The application will request the go-ahead to start building the campus by the start of 2022.

The council has appointed an independent planning consultant to evaluate the application and report back.

A further issue that concerns Stuart is comments “from a small minority” who claim the complex is a “rehabilitation centre for wounded veterans with emotional problems”.

“They claim post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) sufferers will cause major issues for nearby residents.

“Nothing is further from the truth.

“These are damaging and erroneous rumours.”

Of the hundreds of paying veterans from around the world who’ll attend the campus’ sports

resilience and education programme, a minor percentage will have experienced PTSD, she said.

“They’ve been cleared and pronounced fit, healthy and ready to be assimilated into society.

“PTSD specialists in New Zealand confirm a percentage of Canterbury’s population also suffer from levels of the disorder following the earthquakes and mass shooting.

“Stigmatising people with PTSD is unhelpful.”

Stuart said that a day in the life of a Southern Parallel participant includes nutritional meals and training, exercising in a personalised gym within their own homes, sports programmes including resilience training, a PERMA – Positive Engagement Relationship Meaningful Association – programme, outdoor sports activities and engagement in their own sponsored educational programmes.

“He or she will end their day socialising with other participants and enjoy a nutritionally prepared dinner,” she said.

“The purpose of the campus and its programmes is to build

confidence, fitness and prepare participants for a more positive and productive future, enabling them to support their families, extend their professional high-performance sports careers or prepare them for their future after sport.”

Stuart anticipates the participants will come from New Zealand and across the globe, specifically the veterans will be men and women from coalition force countries including Australia, Canada, England, France, Germany and North America.

“These are people who’ve served their country and secured peace around the world,” she said.

Stuart has a background of managing major programmes with experience gained in 10 years of infrastructural redevelopment in war-torn countries such as Bosnia, Angola, Sierra Leone and Uganda.

She also wishes to dispel suspicion that participants don’t want to come to New Zealand.

“New Zealand is a bucket list destination for many people. The results of my research and ad-

vice is that a participant achieves greater benefit when they are taken out of their comfort zone and attend a programme among peers,” she said.

“The other attraction is that New Zealand is greatly admired for its sporting prowess.

“Our campus will engage the best sports coaches, trainers, and professionals that this country can offer.”

Stuart said that the Southern Parallel Campus will bring immense growth opportunities to the region and will engage a significant local workforce.

“The architecturally designed campus will also enhance the neighbouring aquatic park.”

Initially, Stuart presented the project at a number of meetings and assures Ashburton people that, when their application for a resource consent is submitted, there’ll be a further meeting where the community will have the opportunity to be informed about the project.

“Until then, people need to fact check their information before attempting to influence others,” she said.

$1.5m in pool upgrades

An investigation into the state of the district’s swimming pools has revealed upgrades of about $1.5 million are required.

Recommendations outlined in a report commissioned by the Ashburton District Council called for improvements to pool facilities, some of which were of a poor quality.

The Pools Status Report 2021 has investigated the state of the Rakaia, Hinds, Tinwald, Ruapuna, Mt Somers and Mayfield community swimming pools, with council planning to work with the pool and reserve board committees to consider the timing of works and funding sources to implement the recommendations.

The report found most of the pools require repainting, water valve replacement and general servicing to pumps, and chemical dosing equipment in the years ahead.

It was recommended that the addition of toilets at both the Mayfield and Mt Somers pools would improve the facilities, while wall displacement and general run-down quality of the Rakaia, Tinwald, and Hinds pool

The report also suggested that installing chemical dosing controllers would reduce manual water testing requirements and simplify staff duties for the rural volunteers who look after the pools.

Estimated costs for implementing all 21 key recommendations total $1.47 million across 15 years.

But council’s community services group manager Steve Fabish said it was optimistic that funding from grants and other means could be sourced, rather than dipping into council budgets.

“This report has provided really valuable insights into the condition of our community swimming pools. We know how important they are to our rural towns, and it’s crucial that they continue to receive the right maintenance and improvements to safeguard them well into the future.

“We’ll use these findings to help plan the programme of work as funding becomes available.”

Both the Hinds and Tinwald pools require the most attention with more than $610,000 worth of upgrades recommended for both sites.

It has been a long wait, but the Ashburton District welcomes its first refugee family for resettlement today.

It is almost a year since the district was originally due to welcome its first tranche of refugees.

Refugee Settlement Support Service (RSSS) team leader, Kathy Harrington-Watt, said everything was in place for the Afghan family, two adults and three children.

“The family are really excited to come and are looking forward to starting their new life in Ashburton, she said. “They are excited about being the first family and happy they will take on a lead role.”

By July the district is set to be home to three families, with the next family scheduled to arrive in around six weeks.

Originally Ashburton was slated to receive a total of 100 refugees Harrington-Watt said, due to the ongoing impacts of Covid-19 on international borders she said nothing had been confirmed yet.

Ashburton was chosen as a resettlement town back in 2019 and the RSSS team has been planning for the arrival of refugees since October 2019.

The first intake was initially scheduled for June last year, but New Zealand’s refugee resettlement programme was mostly put on hold due to Covid-19 risks for most of last year.

It was then announced in Feb-

ruary that the first refugee family was to arrive in Ashburton on April 16 but due to their complex medical care needs they were redirected to Christchurch.

The added delay had a silver lining as it allowed the RSSS team more time to finalise housing details for the families, as well as other aspects of the resettlement process.

“We got a house sorted and the big volunteer team which is excited, keen to help and ready roll after an already busy week of preparation.”

The RSSS volunteer team, who will be remaining part of each family’s life for at least the next 12 months, has been hard at work the past week making the final preparations to welcome the dis-

After completing a stay in managed isolation, the family transferred to the Mangere Refugee Resettlement Centre for a five-week orientation programme.

Last week Harrington-Watt flew up to meet the family and start the process of resettlement in the Ashburton District.

Harrington-Watt and a delegation from the district then attended the farewell ceremony in Mangere on Thursday ahead of the impending arrival.

After a long wait, the family is due fly down from Auckland and land at Christchurch Airport around midday. There will be a formal welcoming at the airport and then it’s down State Highway 1 to their new home.

In brief Funding grants The Ashburton Water Zone Committee approved $19,000 of funding for two projects at its meeting on Tuesday. Stage 2 of the Silverstream (Anama) planting was given $10,000 and The Terrace – Rangitata River terrace riparian planting near Carew was granted $9000. Introduced to help keep adults occupied during lockdown, it proved so popular organisers kept the catergory for people over the age of 16 (maximum length of 1500 words). The other age categories are under 11 (up to 400 words) and 12-15 years (500 words).

Shutting down the rumours

S

o the rumours and scepticism about a proposed multimillion dollar sports and life education complex at Lake Hood have started – and it’s thankfully drawn a response from its backer.

Catherine Stuart, the project head and brains behind the $70 million facility, has had to step up to dispel suggestions that her plan is not the stuff of fantasy.

Yes, the funding is locked in, she tells us, and that includes 10 years of operational finances.

No, the centre won’t become a sort of rehabilitation halfway house for wounded international war veterans with emotional challenges, which could become a problematic social issue for neighbours.

Yes, hundreds of paying veterans from all over the globe are expected to attend the campus’ sports resilience and education programmes, but Stuart says very few will suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.

And, yes, some of the land for the development has already been bought.

Stuart, perhaps quite rightly feeling a little prickly, has called the rumours “damaging and erroneous’’ and she suggested they had come from a “small minority’’.

Who that small minority is, and why they would start the scuttlebutt, God only knows.

But good on Stuart for going public because we need to hear from her. We need to see her. She may have been working away quietly in the background, but she needs to be visible and heard to stay on the front foot about her plans and how they are shaping up.

After all, she’s the public face of what could be one of the biggest developments ever to hit Mid Canterbury.

An economic report about the project, first announced in 2019, and with initial thoughts that the campus could be opened this year, has suggested it could provide a GDP boost of 2.4 per cent to the district’s economy. You’ll need a pretty big calculator to work out what that is worth in dollars. Let’s say heaps and leave it at that. And if the project gets the green light, it would be one of the most significant employment boosts in Mid Canterbury’s history, with the potential of 1000 new jobs to be created.

The key word in that last sentence was - if. Resource consent approval was still required and an application should be submitted to the Ashburton District Council by the end of July.

So, we’ll know soon enough if this almost hard to believe project will happen and when.

Importantly, once the resource consent is submitted there will be a public meeting to inform the community. That’s a great idea. Because keeping the public up to date about such a massive development seems like a no brainer. At the very least, doing so would shut down the rumours and build excitement rather than suspicion.

Fast Phill attempts Phil’s fast D

ay two was a living nightmare, that seemed to go on forever, but day three was much better and for most of the day I felt pretty good.

The week before we went on our long weekend to Queenstown, I was thinking about all the nice foods and craft beer available down there and the bathroom scales were already saying ,“just one person at a time please”.

Just then, an image of Phil Mickelson appeared on my Facebook feed.

It was a weight loss sign, I thought to myself.

That freaked me out a bit. I know that Facebook is already watching what we are doing online, and I sometimes wonder if they’re listening as well. Have you ever been talking to friends or family about something? Nek minnit, ads for that something are popping up on your Facey feed. Are they now reading our minds as well?

Anyway, back to Phil Mickelson, he looked great in the image that popped up and I thought I’d research how he lost so much weight.

My jaw sunk to the floor when I read, he did a six-day fast. Yes, six days! Surviving on black coffee (glimmer of hope) and a protein shake, each of those six days.

Mickelson said day one is hard and day two is “brutal” but after that you should feel good.

Unfortunately (thank God) I only had three days until we set off on our Queenstown journey.

And being the selfless, husbandof-the-year type I am, I thought to myself, I don’t want Manda feeling guilty about eating a Ferg-burger, for example, in front of me while we are away, so I’ll only do this fast for threeand-a-half days.

As I was thinking about it, I thought to myself, yeah, I can do that!

But as I was saying it out loud to Manda, I felt doubt slap me in the face and that was even before I saw Manda’s reaction. There was a bit of a delay in Manda’s reaction arriving because (you’ll find this hard to believe) I do have Manda on a bit and she initially gave me a ‘Whatever, I’m not falling for that’ look. That was followed by an ‘OMG, you’re serious, have you finally lost the plot completely’ look.

Phil nailed it, day one was hard and day two was brutal, but day three was much better.

Even as we set off on our journey mid-morning on day four of my fast, I felt good and thought I could possibly do the travel day without food.

That changed at the Fairlie Bakery!

The good news was I had dropped five kilos in three days.

The bad news, I picked four of them up again in Queenstown.

I enjoyed every mouthful of doing it though.

The most disappointing thing about my whole Phil Mickelson Fast experiment was, I didn’t see the obvious sign, when investing on the winner of the PGA Championship last weekend.

Mickelson wasn’t even on my radar when investing (donating) on the tournament winner.

I went with my favourite player, Bryson DeChambeau, who was in the top 10 after three days but turned into Bryson DeSham-

Yep, Phil Mickelson became the first 50-year-old to win a major. He would have been paying truckloads too.

Talking afterwards about what it takes for a 50-year-old to compete and beat the young bucks in the sport, the two main takeaways for me were (talking takeaways) eating well and focus.

Not only does he eat well these days, but he fasts for 36 hours every week and believes that has helped him rid his body of any inflammation and he has no signs of the arthritis that was plaguing him some years ago.

And if all that hadn’t sold

me on the benefits of fasting, I discovered this article while prepping my radio show on Wednesday.

Intermittent fasting (IF) is becoming a common practice among dieters trying to burn fat and lose weight, but a new study finds it may hold cognitive benefits as well.

Researchers from Kings College London report IF helped improve the long-term memory retention of a group of lab mice.

Moreover, the eating routine even fostered the generation of new adult nerve cells in the mice’s brains.

Study authors are hopeful their

findings will mean intermittent fasting may offer similar memory benefits to humans too.

So, fasting could help the memory and drop a few kilos. I think I’ll give it a crack on Sunday, if I remember!

Budgets are a fine balancing act.

A Government needs to look after our most vulnerable people, it needs to create frameworks to let businesses grow, invest and employ more, it needs to invest in research and development to mitigate climate change and preserve and enhance our natural environment and, most importantly, a Budget needs to build an economy that will allow New Zealanders – no matter who they are or what they do – to fulfil their dreams and ambitions.

Our debt as a country is set to climb to $184 billion – more than $100,000 for every household.

I, for one, would like to know what we are getting for that debt and, more importantly, what is the growth plan to recover that debt?

With that in mind, Kiwis last Thursday turned to Grant Robertson for some peace of mind – that their hard-earned

Selwyn PM Nicola Grigg taxes are being wisely spent and that the Government is investing on their behalf in the things that will create opportunities that will generate growth that will help them provide for their families.

What we saw though was a Budget that’s utterly lacking in ambition or direction.

The fact that our economy has held up better than feared gave the Government some options.

They could have made it easier to hire or do business.

They could have provided tax relief to hard working families.

They could have incentivised firms to invest in new technology

and upgrade to more productive equipment.

Instead, what we were delivered was some odd form of ‘utu’ on decisions that were made 30 years ago, and no plans for building for the future.

Ironically, this country is fast heading towards the debt levels that drove those decisions to cut spending 30 years ago.

The Finance Minister who delivered that Budget was none other than former Selwyn MP, Ruth Richardson, who says it was driven by a desire to lift economic growth and to make employment attractive.

Rightly, she points out that Robertson’s Budget will lock in intergenerational dependency as benefits become more attractive than jobs.

Once again, though, this Government is relying on regions like Canterbury – whose growth continues to outstrip that of the rest of the country – to put its collective shoulder to the wheel to allow the Government to keep writing the cheques.

Despite that – or perhaps, because of it – groups and organ-

isations around Canterbury get overlooked for support.

The Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage had her budget trebled yet I hear of local creative organisations which are denied a grant from a public fund to support creative organisations.

I recently surveyed women in Selwyn about their wellbeing – the results corroborated nationwide data showing women have been most severely impacted by the pandemic – and what does the Ministry for Women get? Ten million dollars for ‘policy advice’.

Nothing that will tangibly benefit our community.

The headline-grabbing $57 billion on infrastructure does not, I am sorry to say, include any investment whatsoever into connectivity infrastructure – fibre, mobile or otherwise.

As an electorate MP I do try not to be too partisan and I do like to give credit where it’s due but, in the case of Budget 21, I simply can’t see what’s there to endorse.

T

he aftermath of the Ashburton College First Ten Years 1965 -1975 reunion continues.

A fortnight ago cars which came long at around the time Ashburton College began – 1965 – were mentioned, and several readers said they were happy to be reminded of – and had pleasant memories of – Minis and Mustangs.

Some readers said, “how about cars from the rest of that time”?

Hence, one decided to check those out.

But rather than rely on memory, one decided to do some research.

Mr Google, I perhaps hear you say.

Well no, in keeping with those ancient times a decision was made to refer to a fabulous motoring encyclopaedia.

With mixed results.

It’s not that one didn’t find out everything one needed to know in it, because one did.

But as many readers will know, once one starts delving into a fabulous book like that time can easily get away and all of a sudden its getting mighty close to deadline for this story.

Thank goodness for Steve our patient sub-editor!

The reference book refers to the fifteen year period from 1965 to 1980 – which includes the 10 years we’re thinking of – as a time when car production became truly global.

Why? Really, because all of a sudden the fledgling Japanese automotive industry was readying itself to make an impact.

And with the arrival of the some models from its now well-known manufacturers which took particularly the British and American car makers by surprise, an impact was definitely made.

When the Datsun 240Z sports car made its debut in 1969, it left other manufacturers reeling in shock.

Many other marvellous cars came on the scene between 1965 and 1975 like the AC Cobra, the MGC and the Ferrari Dino.

Saloons of the period included the very popular Triumph 2000, the Jaguar XJ6 and the Rover 2000.

Luxury performance and comfort were reaching new levels, and more people were able to acquire cars which provided those luxurious features.

“Remember the car purchased by Mr Thurlow, the first Principal of Ashburton College?”

Sure do, and it’s hard to

forget, both because of the magnificent car it was, and a story heard many years later.

News got out that the first principal of Ashburton College, Mr. Dave Thurlow, had ordered a new car.

And not just any car, he was getting a Humber Super Snipe.

Eventually this black beauty arrived.

The Super Snipe was a big car, and its colour made it look quite sleek, luxurious and regal.

Which it was!

In fact the model was often used by Commonwealth governments for official transportation.

I recall, my brother-in-law David Shroff telling me the Government department in which he worked used them, but after a couple of mishaps someone in the department, probably – given his wonderful sense of humour – my said brother-inlaw, renamed the cars Super Swipes.

Anyway, getting back to our Principal’s new car.

Just after he took delivery of his car, Mr Thurlow attended a College Board meeting.

Afterwards, while the School Board were enjoying supper, the members asked Dave Thurlow the

sort of questions we all ask about new cars, and he was happy to tell them about his brand new vehicle.

But he ended by making an oft-heard comment about it being all very well getting this nice new car, but now it’s been driven out of the showroom it’s probably only worth half what was paid for.

Much to the delight and amusement of others the Motor Trade representative on the Board had an instant retort – he reached into his pocket, pulled out and slapped down his chequebook and said “I’ll give you that for it”!

Needless to say a deal wasn’t done, but its tales like it that make motoring and any history interesting.

Back to the encyclopaedia.

So many cars to read about, so many great pictures, so difficult to choose which to mention.

But a choice was made partly because based on looks and partly because of its name.

If one didn’t know otherwise, one would be excused for thinking the Trident Clipper is a boat.

But there is nothing aquatic about it.

Costing more than an E-Type Jaguar, and almost as much as an Aston Martin DB5, the Trident was a bit of a mix-and-match car, which had, to say the least, precocious handling.

Given that,

Sleek, luxurious and regal, as befits a motor vehicle suitable for the Ashburton College principal!

maybe some ended up in ditches and truly did become aquatic.

Probably fortunate not very many were made.

Regarding its appearance, probably best just to remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

It’s a pretty sure bet none of the students who attended Ashburton College during its first 10 years would have dreamed of getting a Trident Clipper.

It’s also a sure bet many dreamed of owning an E-Type Jaguar.

Production of E-Types began before Ashburton College was born, and continued right thought its first 10 years.

Undoubtedly one of – if not the – most iconic cars of the time, which has enjoyed enduring fame.

Coinciding with the early days of Ashburton College, Bob Dylan told us in song “the times they are a changing.”

They were in so many ways and motoring was not exempt.

From the Land of the Rising Sun came cars which, to start with attracted unfair derogatory remarks, and buyer resistance for various reasons.

But before long the advantages of cars which had standard features which had previously been optional extras, and didn’t mark their spot on the garage floor, found favour, which they continue to enjoy.

Early students at Ashburton College saw during the school’s first 10 the advent of this new wave of cars, which was an indication of things to come and one of the biggest changes in car ownership.

And that is one answer to the question, “How about cars from the rest of that time”.

Crusaders captain Scott Barrett rejoined the team in Coogee this week and will resume the captaincy on Saturday evening when the team takes on the Waratahs in Wollongong.

Barrett’s return is one of a few changes in the forwards this week, with head knocks to loose forward Ethan Blackadder and reserve hooker Brodie McAlister against the Reds seeing them both return home to New Zealand.

Sam Whitelock also moves to the bench for this game on managed minutes.

Head coach Scott Robertson has named Michael Alaalatoa to start ahead of Oli Jager, while Barrett will be joined

by Quinten Strange as the starting locks to face the Waratahs.

Blackadder has been replaced in the number seven jersey by Sione Havili Talitui from the bench, while Nathan Vella, who has been with the squad

since the beginning of Super Rugby Aotearoa as injury replacement for Andrew Makalio, is set to make his Crusaders debut this week as cover for Codie Taylor at hooker.

Robertson has also elected to rest vice-captain David Havili completely for this game, which means 22-year-old Dallas McLeod earns a start in the midfield alongside Braydon Ennor.

McLeod’s inclusion at second fiveeighth is the only change to the backline this week.

The Crusaders are currently based in Coogee, and will travel to Wollongong after the Captain’s Run on Friday afternoon.

Kick-off in the Sky Super Rugby Trans-Tasman match between the Crusaders and Waratahs is 5.05pm (NZT) at WIN Stadium in Wollongong, and you can watch this live on Sky Sport in New Zealand.

Emotion-charged return

There would be no more fitting winner at Addington tonight than Down to the Bone.

Fresh-up to the races after a lengthy spell – the Robert Dunn trained pacer has more than just the one reason to make a winning return to the racetrack.

Plagued by injuries for most of his career to date, the talented pacer has never looked to far off the best horses of his age group, and with troubles hopefully behind him, there’s plenty in store for the son of Bettor’s Delight.

But tonight’s return also comes with a sentimental factor.

Featured in the ownership of the fouryear-old is Ashburton’s Stuart Leadley – who sadly passed away last week after a long illness.

Leadley has been a prominent owner for the Dunn stable for many years, racing plenty of good types including the brilliant Alta Maestro and others like Dream To Reality, Franco Cristiano, Alta Las Vegas and Wesley Silcox.

Down To The Bone has picked up four wins in his career to date – but had it not been for injury problems, it could have been a whole lot more. Leadley raced the pacer with fellow locals and former rugby mates, Brent Clarke, Geoff and Rachel Evans, Graeme Fechney, Simon McDonnell, Alan Neumann, Ian Neumann and Vinnie Neumann.

Down To The Bone, who is part-owned by the late Stuart Leadley will return to the track tonight at Addington.

PHOTO EMILY MORGAN Bone will be ready to rock and roll in what looks a very suitable race to make a return tonight.

Tim Williams will take the drive on the gelding and has drive hm before winning on board him at Addington back in August last year, when he beat a very strong field of pacers. With an excellent fresh-up record, Down To The Bone will give the large ownership group a big chance of an emotion-charged victory at headquarters.

Meanwhile, Ashburton trainer John Hay has two strong chances engaged at tonight’s meeting in up and coming pacer

Betterthanhope, and experienced trotter, Rebel Kibbybones.

The former has been excellent in limited race night appearances, and cops a good draw to work from in a very even field tonight, while Rebel Kibbybones was excellent in running third last time out on Premier night earlier in the month.

The 10-year-old gelding gets in on the front line tonight and with a positive beginning should find himself on the speed and right in contention throughout the 2600 metre journey as he hunts for the sixth win of his 57 start career.

Local trainer Peter Corbett will saddle up two runners today at Wingatui, and both look strong each way chances.

The consistent King Of The Dance has been knocking on the door in this last two starts with a second and a third, and a drop in ratings has him right in contention in a wide-open affair over the 2200 metre distance today, with Daniel Bothamley to do the riding duties. Corbett also lines up Seven Aajes in the opening event on the programme and after a strong fresh up run for fourth will be hoping for a few more places higher today.

Belle fetches $2.6m Champion race mare Melody Belle fell under the hammer for $2.6 million at a Gold Coast sale this week. The 14-time Group One winner was sold to Victorian-based breeding and racing operation Yulong Stud after a spirited bidding duel which included original purchaser, David Ellis who was out to buy the mare again as a breeding proposition of his own.

Final fields for the rich Harness Jewels meeting in Cambridge next week will be completed today. Drawn by random computer generation, the barrier draws over the one-mile distance at the Cambridge track are crucial and there will be plenty of local interest in the marbles given to local hopes, Sweet Belle and Maui, with good draws a huge advancement on their chances in their respective Group One features.

Early glory for Newlands

Newlands’ perfect start to the season in Mid Canterbury Men’s A Grade basketball nearly came to a sudden halt on Wednesday night, but like any good side – the competition leaders found a way to win when they probably shouldn’t have.

Taking on newcomers Checkers for the first time in a top-ofthe-table clash to end the first round, Newlands – who had been untroubled for much of the season to date – found their backs against the wall against a fired-up Checkers side who were out to topple them.

And as the two sides headed onto the court for the final quarter of the game, it was Newlands who were forced into conjuring up something magical to get the win. It was a task they achieved with a bit of authority.

Checkers set all the pace in the match, leading through the first three quarters of the game and were up by six at the end of the third.

Using their class players, the newbies threw everything they had at Newlands and it seemed to stick, while all their opposition could do was try to stay in the match.

Marc Juntilla proved a pivotal player for Newlands who have gone through the first round of the season unbeaten.

The fourth quarter proved why they deserve to be the team to beat this season though, as they turned around that six-point deficit to win the match 78-73 in a thriller.

Not for the first time this season they were led on the scoresheet by Nick Fechney, who bagged 19 points for the game,

but unlike previous weeks where Fechney has shone as the leading points scorer, he was given plenty of help by his team-mates.

Marvin Agacer netted 18 points while the zippy Marc Juntilla continued his consistent run of form with a 16-point haul.

For Checkers, who will rue a missed opportunity to really

stamp their mark on the competitions, Pip Johnston had a stand-up game with an impressive 16 points while Matt Rae was also in good form with 20 points.

Wednesday night’s second match provided another close encounter with Nomads prevailing against a depleted MSA Team Donkey, wining the match 77-69.

A 19-point haul in the first quarter from Sam Pearce put Team Donkey in the box seat, but Nomads fought back to bring the scores to level at the end of the first half.

They then built on that and took an eight-point lead into the final quarter and although they tried, Team Donkey were unable to haul in their rivals.

Pearce was the star of the night across both games.

He landed an impressive 43 points for the match with the remaining 26 shared among his teammates. The effort included five from beyond the three-point line.

Superchamps in July Squash Midlands is gearing up for the 2021 Squash Midlands Superchamps, which will be held in July. It is a competition which pits the best clubs in the Midlands catchment area against each other in a search for glory. Clubs compete against each other to find the champion club in each grade, with the champion club then eligible to travel to the national finals.

Entries close to the event on July 17, with the district eliminations held from July 31 until August 1.

Silver Lake: who is it good for?

I

t is hard to see how NZRPA have anyone’s interests at heart but their own, let alone to accept the idea that they are more expert in negotiating deals and running the game than NZR. Don’t know about you, but when I’m looking to buy or sell a house, I look to the expertise of a real estate agent.

Same with my car.

If some light on the dashboard keeps coming on or – heaven forbid – the vehicle actually grinds to a halt, then I rely on my mechanic to fix it.

When I want a good cut of meat for the barbecue, where do I go? Not the local plumbing supplier, that’s for sure.

I stand to be corrected, but I’m not aware of any current All Blacks who are also running multi-million dollar companies and employing hundreds of staff.

If these same players have experience negotiating broadcasting rights deals and sponsorships and venue leases and the like, then I’m yet to see that either.

In my time being involved in grassroots rugby, I don’t recall seeing any current All Blacks on club committees or appointing rep coaches or doing draws or volunteering for Saturday’s sausage sizzle.

Again, forgive me if I’m wrong, but in my experience, I’ve rarely

I’m past caring about whether New Zealand Rugby’s (NZR) proposed private equity deal with American investment company Silver Lake is a good one. Just as my eyes glazed over when the New Zealand Rugby Players’ Association (NZRPA) released details of their own revenue-generating plan last week.

People watch and play and enjoy rugby for various reasons, but listening to boardroom blowhards isn’t among them. Fans love the game, not arguments about how already-rich people plan to divide up the spoils.

New Zealand Rugby are far from the perfect organisation.

If I had a dollar for every time I’d had a go at them, then maybe I’d have enough money to get my round in at the pub. Assuming $50 or $60 will cover the cost of a handful of pints.

But, whatever you think of NZR, they do possess a fair bit of institutional knowledge.

They have run rugby relatively successfully in this country for well over a hundred years, from nurturing the junior base, to turning out an All Blacks team that’s often the envy of rugby fans everywhere else.

Are they sometimes slow off

the mark? Sure. But their efforts around concussion prevention and gender equality and mental health – to name but three issues – put plenty of other governing bodies in the shade.

Do I think that the folk running our 26 provincial rugby unions are the most competent people in the world?

Probably not.

But, heck, you don’t ascend to those levels without having contributed strongly to junior and schools and club rugby first.

The whole debate – if you can call it that – between NZR and the NZRPA around funding models comes down to expertise.

The NZRPA’s position is that they have it and NZR don’t.

But not only are our leading players smarter and more business savvy and better able to see into the future than their employers, they also care more about the game too.

That is the nuts and bolts of this whole thing.

That the NZRPA are the smartest folk in the room and that their counterparts from NZR are dullards, who will willfully send the game into oblivion.

With the greatest of respect to the NZRPA, it’s hard to see how they have anyone’s interests at heart but their own.

Let alone accept the proposition that they are more expert in negotiating deals and running the game than NZR are.

If I want advice on getting paid

more money for doing less work, then the NZRPA are my guys.

If I’m ever after a contract that affords me a paid holiday in another country, then I know the NZRPA will get that over the line.

But if it’s new tackle bags we need down at the club or jerseys or water bottles or hoodies or even new beer mats for the bar, I know the NZRPA will be nowhere to be seen.

I know that, for as long as they’re All Blacks, they’ll be paid wages the rest of us can only dream of but that, as soon as they’ve had enough, they’ll go and sign a lucrative deal overseas.

No doubt that helps them and their family, but it’s hard to see how that aligns with the enormous care they profess to have for the overall health of the game.

The NZRPA are happy to roll out Richie McCaw and Conrad Smith and Kieran Read to express their disquiet about the proposed Silver Lake deal and the damage it could do to the game in New Zealand; never mind the wealth and privilege NZR have helped bestow upon them.

Like I said, I’m well past caring whether this Silver Lake idea is a good one.

All I can say with certainty is that none of us should assume the players are any more expert in these matters than we are.

Two pieces of Mid Canterbury Hockey silverware were awarded this week, following the completion of the first round of play in the new-look Mid Canterbury Division One competitions.

The Challenge Trophy for the Women’s Division One and the CD Wilson Cup both made their way to the Wakanui club this week, with their women’s side taking round one glory and Wakanui Black proving too strong in the men’s competition.

And from next week, it’s right back to work, with the women competing for the Judy Rennie Tray, and the men doing battle

for the Bowman Cup. Wakanui Black consolidated their place at the top of the standings on Tuesday night with an 6-0 win over Allenton on the NBS Hockey Turf.

They finished the first-round scoring 15 goals across their three matches while only conceding three to take out the title convincingly.

The competition’s leading goal scorer, Scott Marshall was again in good form, netting both his fourth and fifth goals for the season to help his side to victory, while Nathan Nordqvist also grabbed a brace and Nick Sinclair and Tim Harford grabbed one each.

Tinwald managed to push themselves into second place

at the end of the first round with a really strong 3-2 win over Wakanui White earlier in the night.

Tinwald scored through Carl Snowball, Dante Vannini and Will Wilson, while Wakanui fought back with goals to Thomas White and James Wright.

In Women’s Div 1 action, Wakanui needed to beat Methven to secure top spot and did exactly that, 2-0, in a hard-fought match.

Sam Dalziel and Sarah Wilson found the back of the goal for their side, but despite being beaten Methven has set up an enthralling remainder of the season, with the two side’s next meeting set to be a strong one.

The other match of the night

saw Tinwald in solid form too winning 8-3 against Hampstead.

Hat-tricks to both Dani Simpson and Aleisha Stoddart set the tone, while Jess Pitney grabbed a double in a dominant performance from the Tinwald side.

Hampstead grabbed three goals of their own in the match though, with Holly-Jayne Feutz scoring a double and Hannah Young the other.

In Division 2 action, first round trophies will be awarded this weekend, with the men competing for the J. Hunt Memorial Trophy, and it’s a case of winnertake-all with Hampstead Lowcliffe and Tinwald locked at the top of the standings.

They square off against each other on Sunday while the

competition’s other two sides, Wakanui and Allenton will both chase their first win in the other match.

Hampstead Lowcliffe recorded a 4-2 win over Wakanui on Sunday while Tinwald grabbed five goals in their win over Allenton.

In Women’s Div 2 action it’s anyone’s title to win in the AWHA Competition Cup. Methven, Wakanui Black and Wakanui Purple are separated by just one competition point, with Methven and Wakanui Black on top courtesy of their draw last Friday night.

Wakanui Purple await the Methven ladies this week, while Wakanui Black will take on the winless Hampstead Tinwald side in the other match.
