Aviary due for demo Jonathan Leask

Born Free show kicks into gear The Variety Theatre Ashburton’s first show for 2022 is under way. The company for Born Free – The Oscar Winners assembled on Sunday to meet, receive their scores and prepare for the first rehearsal on April 5. Tickets for the production, from May 26-29, are on sale at Braided Rivers Community Trust Event Centre.

The old aviary buildings in the Ashburton Domain will be demolished this week.

The decision to remove the aviary was made as part of the Ashburton Domain redevelopment project in 2020 and the former inhabitants were mostly rehomed to Timaru last March.

Now the aviary, which was established by the Ashburton Rotary Club in 1965, will make way for an informal educational wildlife garden and play area, building on the existing butterfly garden.

In the longer term, a new modern walkthrough aviary could be incorporated into the wildlife gardens, but is not likely to be established until 2042 as part of the 30-year plan.

The former aviary area will be closed off during the demolition work which is expected to start tomorrow and take several days.

Ashburton District Council community services group manager, Steve Fabish, said a specialist crew will be on site to deal with asbestos that had been found in the soffit of one of the buildings.

“There are special requirements to deal with materials containing asbestos, but all the demolition is able to be contained in the old aviary area,” Fabish said.

“People will still be able to access the bowling club, children’s playground and the rest of the domain, which are a safe distance away.”

Some wire netting and posts have already been removed and are being re-used by the Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust to create aviaries for the endangered kakariki, an orange fronted parakeet that is coming back from the brink of extinction.

The aviary had been costing the council $36,000 a year to run and maintain.

Well, there is a very good chance you are being watched, not by a nosey neighbour, but by your cellphone.

We have discussed this very thing at Beer Club, where we often solve the world’s problems.

We have been chatting about something and then it pops up on your social media feed.

We can understand how this happens when you search up a product, but we are confused as to how this could happen when you’re only talking about it. The

finger has been pointed at our smart phones and “Big Brother” in the past.

Two computer scientists are now backing up our thoughts.

In a paper by University of Maryland, Roberto Yus and Primal Pappachan, warn that billions of digital devices are scanning and sensing your movements, every day. Some of them are sitting right in front of you — inside phones, televisions, cars, offices and even your refrigerator.

In the past, few people could have imagined the countless apps which society now uses on their smartphones each day.

However, Yus and Pappachan say this technological revolution has come with a high price to our privacy as internet connectivity now reaches people in more places than ever before.

For all these smart devices to do their job, they need a con-

nection to the internet so they can correlate all the data they’re gathering on you. For example, a smart thermostat in your house spends its day collecting information on you and your preferences. However, without an internet connection to see a weather forecast, the thermostat can’t decide how to properly set the temperature in your home.

This is just the tip of the iceberg though, as the researchers say devices which gather data on everything people do are infiltrating our workspaces, malls, and cities.

There are positives to being monitored. Smart lightbulbs monitor your sleep and heart rate, and smart vacuum cleaners actually map out the interior of your home as it recognises objects to avoid hitting.

And in the near future there are some exciting technology

innovations on the way.

The Block Chain space is very interesting and Manda and I have been learning a lot about this and have been shown an exciting and rewarding opportunity in this space.

They are saying in the near future we will have an avatar, who will be an exact replica of us and we will be able to send them shopping for us. They could virtually wander into Sparrows or even a shop in New York and try on a pair of jeans and with a couple of clicks receive that pair of jeans in the post a few days afterwards.

And while I’m talking clothes, for those people who always forget to charge their phone, smart clothes that create electricity when you move could be charging our phones in the near future too.

Exciting but a wee bit scary,

times ahead.

Pat Deavoll Out in the countryside beyond Temuka is an enterprise that has gone from strength to strength over the last two decades.

Pye Group is owned by Leighton and Michelle Pye, and they are passionate about their farming operations.

“We are a family-owned and operated business specialising in contracting, transport, dairying, vegetables, cropping, and grazing,” Michelle said.

“Also, we have a fantastic team of people working together which makes for a really productive agricultural business.”

Pye Group works hard to make sure that its farming systems operate at an environmental level beyond what is required by compliance. The group employs a fulltime environmental compliance and enhancement manager who works with the owners and farm teams to manage consent conditions and implement farm environment plans.

“Also, with most of our farms relying on irrigation, it is vital that we use water efficiently. We do this by monitoring soil moisture content and on some prop-

erties use variable-rate irrigation systems,” said Michelle.

Recently, the Pyes have been working on a strategic plan for the business, looking at their purpose and values.

“We value the communities our people live in and the areas we operate in. Our goal is to be respected in the community and our industry,” Michelle said.

Sam and Shannon Lovelock are contract milkers on two of the Pye Group farms – Dialan 1 and Dialan 2. Originally farmed as one, it was the first farm to be converted by the Pye family.

"We are currently in our fourth season contract milking for Pye Group. Our agri-business em-

ploys five fulltime people, and we share the same values as Pye Group.

“We think this makes for a great working environment for us and our team," Lovelock said.

"Each farm milks 700 cows in a 40-aside herringbone shed. They are basic dairy sheds but work well. We are mainly grass-fed and normally feed around 525 kg of supplement per cow.

“The farms are mainly pivoted irrigation with some K-lines in the corners. The majority of the water is sourced from a deep bore, and we have access to the Rangitata-South Scheme on one of the farms.

"Each farm averages about

290,000kg/ms per year. But this season has been particularly hard – we are averaging 8 per cent less production than last season.

“This is because of the wet/ overcast weather and low-energy grass.

“All the young stock are grazed at the runoff which is owned and operated by Pye Group.

“We are proud to be part of Pye Group because of their industry-leading practices and proactive approach to sustainable farming.

“We are excited about the progression that the dairy industry provides, and we are working towards owning our own herd in the future."

ineteen years. Wow. Where’s it all gone?

I was thinking that on Sunday when my second favourite son Finn – Frankie the dog will always be number one – celebrated his 19th birthday and started looking forward to his final year as a teenager.

I would be lying if I said it just seemed like yesterday that, after devouring a whole packet of chocolate-coated mini Girl Guide biscuits in the Southland Hospital birthing unit as I showed devoted support for my dear wife to get the job done, Finn finally decided to make his grand entrance as a delightful 9lb bundle

of joy on March 20, 2003.

I remember it being an exciting, if apprehensive, time in our household. It was a time of learning and growing and one where I expected we’d soon have plastic bags of frozen breast milk in the freezer next to the vanilla ice-cream. Yes, we were new parents.

Suddenly our world revolved completely around little Finn.

Suddenly little else mattered – even sport. Weird, I know.

As first-time parents, we were experiencing a magical period of wonder, joy and the possibility that it was making us really stupid. You see, all new parents undergo a sharp drop in intelligence. We were no different, especially yours truly.

It’s nature’s way of enabling parents to form an emotional bond with a tiny human, who relates to other humans exclu-

sively by dribbling and vomiting on them.

Even smart parents are affected, as you will see from these two quotations.

Albert Einstein, shortly before the birth of his son: “To know what is impenetrable to us really exists, manifesting itself as the highest wisdom and the most radiant beauty, which our full faculties can comprehend but only in their most primitive forms.

This knowledge, this feeling, is at the centre of true religiousness.’’

After a month or so of bonding with your baby, typical parents have the combined IQ of a carrot.

I quickly headed that way.

I remember talking to Finn on one of those very first mornings, just after his latest feed and nappy change. “You’re such a cutey,

wutey little dude, with cutey, wutey fingers and cutey, wutey arms and cutey, wutey cheeks,’’ I would say, goofily smiling away.

“And look at that fuzzy, wuzzy hair.’’

Sound stupid? Maybe. But I could always tell by Finn’s facial expressions that he understood me completely, although it might also have been gas. Finn inherited that quality from his mother early on. Joking, dear.

Seriously, Finn could follow and understand my every word because it goes without saying that he was very gifted from day one. And, as a trained journalist, I could state with total objectivity that he was surely the cutest baby boy in the world.

Southland Hospital doctors and medical team members all agreed. They took one look at Finn after he was born and immediately decided that they should

shut down the birthing unit because this baby, our baby, was so perfect that there was clearly no point in making any more. Okay, they didn’t say that, but they agreed, under intensive interrogation from the father, that the baby was pretty darned cute.

And then, of course, we ended up in that mode, which all parents know. It’s where you don’t sleep much, and you find yourself celebrating a baby poop the way Ukrainians celebrate seeing a Russian tank blown to pieces.

It’s also when you walk around the house at 4.30am with the baby on your shoulder, trying to remember the words to lullabies and trying to make sensible conversation.

I never really conquered the lullabies back then, or any time, but the in-depth conversations were easy from the get-go with my “teeny, weeny, widdle man’’.

Militaria and Aviation Extravaganza The Ashburton Aviation Museum is joining forces with the Military Adventure Group to put on an extravaganza over a two-day period. The display will see one of the largest presentations of military uniforms,

weapons, and equipment ever assembled at one display. This will be situated in the Superhanger provided for use by the museum. 9am-4.30pm both days. Tickets: Family pass $35, Adult: $15, Child $5, MotorHome Parking: $5. Postponed from February 2022
