Volunteers step up for flood-hit farming family ‘We couldn’t do this on our own’

From page 1 Amazing. That’s how an indebted Laurence Rooney describes the efforts of volunteers who have come to his family’s aid to help clean up his flood-ravaged Winchmore dairy farm.

A social media campaign to help the Rooneys and neighbours Ben Streeter and Kate Shearer pick up the pieces has quickly gained momentum, with about 50 people turning up on the first day on Monday to clear debris.

Some even came with diggers and tractors. Volunteers will be at the farm all week, with charities and organisations taking turns to provide lunch and smoko.

Laurence said the volunteers had assisted with clearing paddocks of wires, sticks and debris.

“It was very impressive,’’ he said.

“My wife and I and the kids couldn’t do this on our own.”

And it won’t be a quick, easy job. The damage from last week’s floods was far beyond what they have experienced or could ever have imagined. Both families have farmed alongside the north branch of the Ashburton River for five generations and were aware of the risk of flooding at their farm, aptly named Riverbound.

But last week’s flood was something else. At its peak, 80 per cent of Laurence and Philly Rooney’s farm was under water after the river burst through its stopbank, spewing a torrent of floodwa-

ters, shingle, sand and branches across the property.

While the water has receded, the flood has left behind debris, broken fences and shingle and sand up to one metre deep in places.

The Rooneys have had to move out of their water-damaged home and are now staying in Ashburton, along with their four children and three dogs.

Kate Shearer and Philly Rooney are cousins and the two families share a milking shed, which fortunately was untouched and now acts as HQ for anyone wanting to volunteer.

The farm is on Shearers Road, while Rooneys Road is nearby, illustrating the long history the families have had in the district.

People travelling the Ashburton-Methven highway are oblivious to the devastation that awaits when you turn down the side road towards the river.

“We had two days that we were at the end of Shearers Road and didn’t have access to our animals. They were roaming the rest of the farm,” Laurence said.

And when the Rooneys say the damage is even worse on the other side of the farm near their house, it’s hard to believe, but it’s true. That’s where the river broke out, after punching a 100-metre hole through the stopbank.

Their eight-year-old house was in the direct firing line, but it was saved by a 70-year-old row of conifers, which diverted the flow, preventing significant damage.

Even so, their house, built a metre above ground level, is surrounded on two sides by sand

All the yard sheds had up to a metre of gravel in them.

“Personally, I think we will have to bulldoze them down.”

About 50 hectares of the Rooney’s 200ha farm is covered in thick sand, silt and shingle and Laurence is unsure who will pay for the substantial remediation work needed.

“You can’t insure land, only the buildings.”

Volunteer workers at the Rooney farm enjoy lunch, which is being catered by a different charity or organisation each day this week.

Mayor pushes second bridge

Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown says he’s “reminded’’ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern about the increased urgency for a second bridge for his town.

Last week’s floods and subsequent damage to the Ashburton Bridge along State Highway 1 has seemingly provided a platform for the district’s community leaders to make some headway higher up the food chain. That included further dialogue with Environment Canterbury’s regional transport arm to bring forward some of its work on the second bridge.

But Ardern was probably the key player and she was in Ash-

burton last week to survey flood damage in the Ashburton district.

Brown has emailed Ardern and said he was also in discussion with Transport Minister Michael Wood on long-delayed construction of a second bridge over the Ashburton River.

“I mentioned the needs of an Ashburton bridge,” he said.

Brown reminded the Prime Minister and transport bosses that a second bridge should be among its priorities, especially after Wood revealed plans for a $785 million bridge for cyclists and walkers alongside the Auckland Harbour Bridge last week.

There was a heated reaction in Mid Canterbury to Wood’s Auckland bridge announcement, with a Guardian Facebook post

garnering hundreds of outraged comments.

“If there’s money there for that, then there has to be money there for our bridge as well,” Brown said.

Funding of a new Ashburton bridge appears to also be an issue. About 51 per cent of the estimated $40 million development was expected to be paid for by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA), although Brown said they had not yet requested funding.

“We can’t bag them for not giving us money because we haven’t asked them yet.”

A further 20 per cent would be paid for by the Ashburton District Council, with the remaining 29 per cent still to be sourced.

MPs call for Jobs for Nature to help recovery

The MP for Selwyn is strongly recommending the government releases funding from its $1.245 billion Jobs for Nature project to help struggling Mid Canterbury farmers.

Nicola Grigg and the MP for Waimakariri, Matt Doocey, spent Monday afternoon assessing the aftermath of last week’s flooding, visiting farms in the Greenstreet area, and inspecting the Ashburton River bridge.

Yesterday, Grigg briefed the National Party caucus about her recommendations and spoke to relevant party spokespeople.

Grigg said Jobs for Nature, announced in April, is specifically designed for conservation work to enhance the natural environment and establish 11,000 jobs.

“So far it’s only created 800 so there’s still a lot of money and jobs left,” she said.

The Ministry of Primary Industries, which will administer the funding, has allocated $10 million for catchment group projects to be spent on farming and horticulture to help land restoration, wetland protection, restoring waterways, planting, pest control and farm environment plans.

“The clean-up ticks those boxes,” Grigg said.

“It’s the worst flooding event I’ve seen.

“Our farmers need skilled people, machinery, equipment and livestock and it’s one of the sources that funding can come from.

“Farms themselves need roads, bridges

and fencing fixed and funding for winter feed.

“The government has a vast array of resources and Jobs for Nature is a fund they can tap into.”

Grigg said, as a Mid Canterbury sheep farmer’s daughter, she would like to see it happen.

Supporting her comments, Doocey said the government “needs to spend time here on the ground to see the damage and remediation work required which they haven’t done.”

“The government is big on announcement but light on delivery,” he comments.

Doocey said it’s important as Canterbury elected representatives, both he and Grigg need to experience what’s happening so “we can take these voices to Wellington to ensure they’re listened to and hold the government into account.”

The two National MPs visited Ben Streeter’s farm at Greenstreet to assess the damage.

“It’s heartbreaking to see the devastation,” Doocey said.

“One farm alone needed $500,000 in remediation. That’s about the extent of the government’s cleanup package. They came down for a brief time, then moved on. We’ll be advocating for long term recovery.”

Bright future ahead for young country star

Emergency Relief Fund open People and families in Mid Canterbury experiencing financial hardship as a result of the recent flood events are able to apply for funds to help with essential costs.

Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown finalised the criteria for the Emergency Relief Fund last week and applications opened on Tuesday.

The fund is designed to assist with essential costs of daily life not covered by insurance or other funds where an immediate need exists.

The outpouring of support from communities all over the country in the wake of the Ashburton floods has been incredible and the relief fund provides a further avenue of support for those in need, Mayor Brown said.

“The eligibility to apply is reasonably wide in the hopes those in real need are not in any way inhibited from gaining the support they need,” he said.

“In the meantime, if there is an immediate financial need not covered by insurance or other forms of assistance, people are advised to apply as soon as they are able.”

Application forms and criteria are available online from the Ashburton District Council website.

One of Mid Canterbury’s youngest stars shone bright at the Gold Guitar Awards in Gore at the weekend.

Mid Canterbury Country Music Club’s Molly Harrison claimed first place in the junior country rock category, and the junior runner-up overall over the weekend’s competition.

Queen’s Birthday weekend was the final wrap-up for a week’s worth of events in Gore, with the inaugural Tussock Country Music Festival being held in the lead-up to the Gold Guitars.

With ages 12 and under to over 60s categories, there was a range of talented individuals and groups that competed for the top spots in their categories.

Celebrating the best of the best including male and female solo, gospel, traditional, new country, country rock, duet, vocal group, NZ song and instrumental.

The junior section of the music awards auditioned from 8am Saturday to compete in the finals on Saturday night.

Harrison made it into the finals of both the country rock and gospel categories, performing at the Gore Town and Country Club in the Gold Guitar Awards junior and intermediate finals.

This year featured a big increase in younger entries with 260 in the intermediate grades out of a total of 750 entrants.

More than 130 nurses to strike here

Exhausted nurses in Ashburton are joining the tens of thousands around the country who are walking off the job for several hours today.

A last ditch DHB effort to find a resolution was vehemently rejected by the New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO), leaving the nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants no choice to abandon their post for an eight hour period.

A total of 138 nurses at Ashburton Hospital are expected to strike in the town today from 11am with some to later join their colleagues in Christchurch.

Ashburton Hospital’s NZNO delegate Jane Worsfold said health care was becoming increasingly compromised.

“Everybody is just tired, exhausted and burning out,” she said.

“There’s no increase in staffing and people are leaving to Australia and some senior nurses have gone to Three Rivers and the private sector.

“There’s not enough staff to call on...it’s getting pretty stressful.”

She said some nurses were forced to work 13 hour shifts because of the staffing shortages.

A second offer in the current round of multi-employer collective agreement (MECA) negotiations was “overwhelmingly” refused by the 30,000 of DHB-employed nurses before voting closed on Monday.

NZNO Lead Advocate David Wait said nurses were facing serious workforce issues and that the second DHB offer did not address these matters.

“Our members are genuinely concerned that nursing shortages would increase if it was accepted, and that standards of care for all in New Zealand would suffer as a result,” he said.

“Ironically some DHBs have requested to have more staff on strike day to provide life preserving services than they would ordinarily have in their wards on a non-strike day.

“That staff levels are regularly below life preserving services levels should concern everyone.”

Both the Canterbury and West Coast District Health Boards

(DHBs) had implemented contingencies around the planned strikes.

Acting chief executive for Canterbury and West Coast DHBs, Becky Hickmott said they were putting a number of measures in place to ensure urgent and emergency care could be provided during the strikes.

“We are in the process of rescheduling any that had been made on an individual basis to ensure that there is sufficient capacity to continue to provide emergency care during the strike.”

Queen’s Birthday honours T

he Queen’s Birthday Honours list for 2021 includes former All Black captain Wayne Shelford, prominent artist Sir Grahame Sydney, former Dunedin mayor Dave Cull, and former long-serving MP Ruth Dyson.

They also include expat-Ashburtonian Lynette Kaye Anderson, for services to the zoological industry and conservation.

In all, 170 New Zealanders have been awarded honours.

Anderson has been the chief executive of Orana Wildlife Park for 25 years.

Anderson brought the park back from financial difficulty in the 1990s and turned it into a globally recognised zoo that makes significant contributions to conservation and offers educational experiences for visitors.

Under her leadership, the park has become one of Canterbury’s most iconic regional attractions as New Zealand’s only open range zoo, and won the Champion Canterbury Business Award in 2006.

She has held governance roles within the zoological indus-

Anderson received the Zoo and Aquarium Association Australasia Professional Excellence Award in 2012, and the ZAA NZ Individual Award in 2008 for her contribution to conservation.

Sirs and Dames Grahame Sydney, whose name is synonymous with the terrain of Central Otago, has been made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to art.

Hinewehi Mohi has been made a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to Maori, music and television.

Dame Hinewehi (Ngati Kahungunu, Ngai Tuhoe) was the first person to sing the national anthem in te reo at an international rugby match – the 1999 Rugby World Cup in Twickenham. It set the trend for the anthem to be sung in two languages at all the country’s most prominent events.

Former Dunedin mayor and president of Local Government New Zealand Dave Cull has been made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, accepting the award just a few weeks before he died in April.

Former Labour MP Ruth Dyson, who retired at last year’s general election after 27 years as the MP for Lyttelton, Banks Peninsula and the Port Hills as well as being a Cabinet Minister, has been awarded a Queen’s Service Order (QSO) for her services as an MP and also for disabled people.

Peter Miskimmin who was chief executive of Sport New Zealand from 2008 until last year has also been awarded the QSO. Sarah Stuart-Black, the former executive director of the Ministry of Civil Defence and now the secretary-general of the New Zealand Red Cross, has been awarded the QSO for her services to emergency management.

She has overseen the Civil Defence response to the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake, the 2017 Port Hills fires, the Christchurch terror attacks and the Whakaari /White Island eruption in 2019, floods in Southland and the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

Four well-known sportspeople are among the new Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit: Ryan Archibald for services to hockey, Adam Blair for services to rugby league, Phillis Meti for services to sport, especially golf and Reverend Janice Stead who has been involved in cricket at all levels, as a player, commentator, selector, and administrator.

Russell Langdon is turning a lemon into lemonade.

Langdon has spent 20 years working on the Riverbridge Conservation Park, nestled about 500m from the Ashburton River at Westerfield, only to see it badly damaged in last weeks flooding.

“It’s made a hell of a mess,”

Langdon said.

“There is more work everywhere you look. There is a lot of cleaning up to do.”

On Tuesday he had a digger on site working on the badly damaged pond that had breached its banks.

He said that the pond had “become a bit of a lemon, but we will turn it into lemonade by converting it into a wetland, which is pretty exciting.”

The flood waters had covered around a quarter of the 20 acre block of former farmland, that has a permanent protection from a QEII convenant, and over 20 years has been transformed into a conservation area and wildlife sanctuary.

Like other parts of the district, thousands of back-breaking man-hours have been undone in a matter of hours due to flood waters.

“There is a lot of fencing damaged and I’ve lost a pair of brown teal which are critically endangered.

“There is plenty to be done and we are working on it, but it needs to dry out a bit first.”

A working bee was held at the site on Tuesday to begin the cleanup, the first of many Langdon said, as they work towards restoring the conservation area – again.

The Student Volunteer Army (SVA) will be touching down in the Ashburton District today to assist with the flood clean-up.

SVA operations manager Penny Roy said they had a busy weekend with around 70 members helping out in mainly rural locations in the Selwyn District and also Peel Forrest.

However, from today and for the rest of the week she said a van load of students will be on the ground in the Ashburton District each day.

“All the requests we have for this week are around Ashburton,” Roy said.

There may be a bigger contingent at the weekend, but Roy said with many students gearing up for exams it was hard to know exact numbers yet.

Either way, boots on the ground and pitching in where they can is what SVA is all about.

“In many cases it’s the voice of support that they appreciate more than the physical support – of course they appreciate the physical support but we have rung a number of farmers who have said thanks for reaching out but they are okay.”

In many cases the farmers need something more heavy duty than a few students on a shovel but “every bit helps”, Roy said.

Flood washes away in-stream power poles

An in-stream power pole is about to be washed away in last week’s flood.

The main focus facing EA Networks this week is how to replace eight instream poles following last week’s flood.

The overhead poles, which carried power over river crossings, were washed away at the height of the floods.

Fortunately, the lines broke free from the conductor so there was no significant loss of electrical supply.

Jeremy Adamson, general manager customer and commercial, said the eight in-stream poles represent a quarter of the 32 overhead river crossings and will be replaced when

access allows.

“We’re taking time to ensure the best designs are used for these replacements,” Adamson said.

“From a network perspective, we’ll also consider minor network design changes so that we can isolate these sections quickly to restore power in the event of future emergencies.”

Last week EA Networks remained on high alert, checking several electricity and fibre network lines ducted across Ashburton River.

Bridges are essential for carrying cables, both north and south of the district.

While the alert has reduced, the power company is now focusing on ensuring it has plans in place if another event should occur.

“Like any cable failure, there’d be some loss of electrical supply until we’re able to supply energy from a different direction or back-feed or repair the damage,” Adamson said.

“We were really impressed with how the network withstood this event and we were able to restore service quickly in the circumstances.

“I’m proud of the field teams that were out in the conditions, they did a great job.”

Victim’s brother calls for intersection improvements Ashburton Guardian and NZME

The family of a man killed in an horrific crash near Ashburton on Friday is pleading for drivers to stick to the road rules to prevent similar deaths in future.

And he is calling on local authorities to improve intersection signage and road markings for the same reason.

Avinash Chand and three others died on Friday morning when the van he was driving collided with a truck on Cochranes Road.

The other victims were passengers in the van.

Two other passengers and the driver of the truck were injured.

Police are still investigating the cause of the fatal crash but said on Friday it appeared the van had gone through a controlled intersection.

Area Commander Inspector David Gaskin attributed the “absolute tragedy” to “a moment of inattention”.

Chand was an owner of Identity Tours and was transporting clients to the Gold Guitar music competition in Gore when the crash happened.

The other victims are still being formally identified and their families informed.

Their names will be released later this week.

Chand’s brother Visal said his family was “so broken”.

“We are trying to gain strength

and trying coming to terms with what has happened to my brother who was so loved by family and friends,” he said.

He said his brother was born and raised in Fiji, in the Savutalele settlement in Suva.

Chand is survived by three siblings and his parents.

“Avi is widely missed,” said Visal Chand, a Christchurch pastor.

“He was a much loved nephew, cheeky cousin, cherished brotherin-law.”

Many family members will not be able to travel to New Zealand for Chand’s funeral, which was heartbreaking.

His brother wanted to thank everyone involved at the crash scene.

“I would like to thank everyone from my heart – police, ambulance … and everyone that do not know of who was with Avi and others that were in that van when we were so far away,” he said.

“My message to the drivers and community is that whatever type of vehicle you drive – please follow all road rules and signs.

“Respect all motorists – they may be someone’s brothers or sisters or a loved person for someone.”

Visal Chand also implored local authorities to do all they could to improve intersection safety.

Conditions at the intersection of the fatal crash, as well as the pres-

ence and quality of road markings and signage, will be part of the police investigation.

Visal Chand hoped his brother’s death would push councils and roading authorities to enhance safety features at rural intersections where needed.

“It’s truly heartbreaking to see poor road marks and signs on rural roads,” he said.

“It claims so many lives. Please do something about it – upgrade signs and check for any improvements necessary at least to prevent accidents.”

At the weekend road safety advocate Clive Matthew-Wilson said accidents like Chand’s were usually the result of drivers not noticing compulsory stop signs.

He said Canterbury was “crisscrossed with intersections” like the one at the centre of Friday’s fatal crash.

“Drivers new to the area driving along a long, flat road may not see the approaching intersection until it’s too late,” he said.

“One small stop sign is not enough.

“If drivers are unaware that there is a stop sign, they may just drive straight through – often with fatal consequences.”

Chand’s business partner at Identity Tours did not want to comment.

Smiths move across town

Smiths City Ashburton has completed a move across town.

Last week they opened in the new site on West Street in the former Bunnings building after shifting 1.5km metres north from the corner of Dobson Street West and Kermode Street where it had been based since 2000.

“We were just working through things with the landlord and we didn’t come to an agreement,” managing director Tony Allison said.

“They had other options and we looked for other options.”

Working with Tricroft Properties, he said the only other option readily avaliable was

the vacant former Bunnings site.

“It was a pretty easy decision in the end.

“Shifting up the road and into a different part of town, being fresh and new with easier access and plenty of parks, all leant itself towards making a fresh start [at the new location].

“We needed a decent sized site and you just can’t walk into town wanting 1500sqm.

You might be able to cobble something together, but there was nothing obvious.”

The move to the new site went smoothly, he said.

“It was a day changeover and we had most of the stock there, so started trading.

“We were going to do a grand opening on Saturday, but just with everything going on in the district we pushed it out a week.”

A grand opening is now planned for this weekend.

Give our nurses a medical lifeline T

hey’re every day medical superheroes – and they need our support.

They’re the New Zealand Nurses’ Organisation where its 30,000 members, which includes midwives and healthcare assistants, will go out on strike from 11am to 7pm today in their fight for better pay and staffing levels.

Their strike deserves everyone’s attention because we hear and read that our nurses are angry, under-valued and, in many cases, simply burnt out. Worse, nursing as an occupation in New Zealand appears to be facing a serious workforce issue, with poor pay rates not attracting people to the sector and unsafe staffing levels stretching them to breaking point.

Is it any wonder then that our nurses feel disheartened by the latest offer from the district health boards, especially after

so many of them bravely risked their own lives on the frontline during the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The pandemic continues to throw a spotlight on our modern-day Florence Nightingales all over the globe where their care, compassion, integrity and commitment has again underlined their immense value. From donning personal protective equipment (PPE), to caring for the critically ill and in some cases (believed to be in their thousands), coming down with Covid themselves and succumbing to the disease, they have proved their mettle yet again.

Nurses, of course, will brush off working in a pandemic as simply being part of the job.

But let’s just stop and think about that for a moment. Try to imagine just what it must be like to be a frontline nurse and healthcare worker during a pandemic in an overrun hospital and the mental strain and stress that must bring. Imagine the

members?’’

Superheroes?, you say. You bet they are. And what about those hospital nurses in New Zealand who wear personal alarms to alert security guards if they get in danger because of the increasing violence and abuse

they face while at work.

Remember, we’re talking about working in hospitals here.

Not prisons.

Of course, today’s strike in Ashburton and all over the country is in no way just about nurses risking all in a pandemic. Nor is it focused on those nurses who perform their magic in hospital emergency care and surgery.

There are thousands upon thousands of other nurses who work in clinics, in assisted living facilities and in home health care, who deserve just as much praise and just as many thanks.

Their work goes mostly unnoticed, under-appreciated and not sufficiently rewarded at the best of times. That needs to change. Now. Hopefully today’s strike will help make that happen because at the moment the nursing sector is, well, looking rather sick.

In case people that live in the North Island (Auckland in particular) haven’t heard yet, Mid and South Canterbury experienced massive floods and destruction to property, farms and roading infrastructure, the cost of which is likely to exceed the cost of the new cycle bridge.

The Ashburton Bridge over the

river also has been compromised and traffic is only partly operational at the moment, and given that it is the main link between the top and bottom of the South Island, you would think the focus might not only be on getting this bridge repaired quickly, but also bringing forward and the Government funding of the long

talked about second bridge to ensure that the State Highway between north and south can remain open in all conditions.

The announcement truly does show the great divide between the state of Auckland versus the rest of New Zealand.

It is apparently okay to continue to spend endless amounts of

money to keep the city dwellers satisfied and bugger the rest of the good citizens of New Zealand.

One day we may get to the stage of where a Government truly represents the whole of New Zealand and not just Auckland and the North Island.

Focus firmly on flood recovery

ecovery means shifting from focusing on activities that needed an immediate response and expanding to include those with a medium-to-longer term focus.

Council is quickly getting a handle on what is broken and what needs to be fixed, and the timeframes involved.

at least restricted passage. Waka Kotahi (NZ Transport Agency) is making plans to repair the main Ashburton River Bridge.

As has been so clearly demonstrated, this is an essential connection for our district and the whole of the South Island.

Our people remain our top priority, especially those in the rural community who bore the brunt of the flood damage.

Our teams are working with specialist response teams consisting of Ministry for Primary

Industries and Rural Support Trust personnel, as well as other agencies who continue to visit farmers in affected areas to assess and provide support.

No doubt, this recovery will have a long tail.

If you need financial assis-

tance, apply for the Mayoral Relief Fund. If you feel anxious or need to talk to someone, you can call or text 1737.

Council will continue to update residents on the recovery phase through its website.

Govt must front up with funding

C

antabrians are, rightly, fuming.

On the back of the biggest rain event we’ve seen in a century, the Government announces it as a ‘medium scale’ adverse event – a declaration that allows for a cash injection of $500,000 – then, to add further insult to injury, announces almost $800 million for a cycleway along the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

I can’t help but think that when Jacinda Ardern announced she’d lead “a government for all New Zealanders” she actually only meant New Zealanders in Auckland.

This sort of money is an absolute slap in the face to New Zealand’s most productive sector, and New Zealand’s most productive region.

What we need is tens of millions of dollars to not only fix – but future-proof – our infrastructure networks.

Let’s give some context to the scale and cost of the damage caused to rural Canterbury last weekend.

Most farms estimate they have hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage per property – much of which has been done to uninsurable infrastructure – on farm roads, bridges, culverts, stock water systems, fences, winter feed and riparian planting have been smashed by the Waimakariri, Hawkins, Selwyn, Hororata and Ashburton rivers – to name just a few.

The Government has far more resources at its disposal than it is letting on.

mary Industries Damien O’Connor to declare it a large scale adverse event – this would have freed up more funds – I also wrote to the Minister for Social Development asking her to activate Enhanced Taskforce Green as they did after the Southland floods in early 2020.

This would have brought job seekers into the region – while I understand what most farms need is skilled labour to deal with machinery and stock – at least this would have supplied some manpower to get on with the very unglamorous job of cleaning fences.

Then there’s the $1.3 billion Jobs for Nature programme – dedicated specifically to creating 11,000 jobs (it has only created 800 jobs) that will ‘improve freshwater’ and ‘enhance biodiversity on public and private land (for example by planting native species)’.

There is $10 million allocated to MPI for ‘catchment group projects’ to support beef and lamb farmers and dairy farmers.

If the flood clean-up and reinstatement doesn’t qualify for any of this, then I don’t know what will.

It could siphon money to NZTA via the National Land Transport Programme (NLTP) that could at least cover earthworks and remediation for hard-to-reach networks like our

As well as boosting the meagre funding allocation, the Government could also override current RMA laws that are hampering clean-up – and mitigation – efforts with emergency powers.

Afterall, it has no hesitation in rushing through laws to legislate Councils to have Maori wards or for ECE businesses into pay parity.

Many farmers who have land alongside waterways have been enormously frustrated by an overly zealous regime that hasn’t allowed them mitigation

work that would have kept rivers clear and prevented much of this huge damage from occurring.

Some are now wanting to get on with clearing up, but again, are being frustrated by the regulatory requirements.

To make matters worse, many are being told by ECan that it won’t cover remediation work because their farms don’t fall within certain rating districts – and that they’ll also have to pay for a resource consent to do the clean-up themselves.

You couldn’t make this stuff up. This is why I’ll do everything

I can going forward to get positive change made to our environment and planning laws.

The one shining light this long wet week has been delivered by local farmers like David Clark, Chris Allan and the Aclands, who’ve not only faced their own mammoth flood damage, but have also tirelessly fronted media and public enquiries.

To them and the industry bodies like Federated Farmers and the Rural Support Trust, we owe a great debt of thanks.

6 DAILY RECIPE 3 chicken and beetroot salad 8Smoked 5-6 medium sized beetroot T olive oil 5 1-2 1 t ground cumin garlic, crushed 7 2¾cloves C Greek style yoghurt T roughly chopped mint 1 1300g Tegel Manuka Smoked Chicken Breast - Original 300g 4 Large handful mesclun or rocket leaves 70g packet pistachio nuts, lightly toastand roughly chopped 9 ed Extra mint leaves for garnish ature.

2■■ Preheat oven to 160°C. ■■ Mix together the garlic, yoghurt and ■■ Scrub and trim the beetroot and then chop into 2-3cm chunks. Place beetroot on a large piece of aluminium foil in a roasting dish. Draw the foil up over the beetroot and pinch to seal. Bake for 30 minutes.

■■ Carefully open the foil and drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle over the cumin and continue to cook until a skewer slides into the beetroot with little resistance. About 15 minutes more in total. Remove from the oven and allow to cool to room temper-

chopped mint. Season to taste.

■■ Slice Tegel Manuka Smoked Chicken Breast - Original 300g into bite sized pieces.

■■ Scatter salad leaves on a platter or individual plates, and then arrange smoked chicken slices on top. Pile beetroot on top of the chicken and then spoon over the yoghurt dressing and sprinkle with pistachio nuts. Scatter over the extra mint leaves to garnish.

Climate commissioner’s comments baffling, frustrating A

s I write this, the release of the Climate Change Commission final report is due today. It is doubtful that the report is going to change dramatically from the draft, but there may be some small changes.

The commission’s draft advice to the government had some good points and others that didn’t go down well.

On the plus side: there was useful talk about improving rural connectivity; the report clearly differentiated methane as a short-lived gas that should be treated differently; the report talked about more than just agriculture (a refreshing change from the well-trodden path of some media) and identified the need for the government to consider all its actions in a holistic sense and not just as a series of silos.

There was also mention of the need for a conversation around genetic technologies.

On the downside: while initially it seemed the commission was just projecting a 15 per cent drop in agricultural emissions due to current trends in land use change, it later said that if those trends changed, we had to make that level of reduction anyway – and food production be damned. And of course some shook their head over talk of banning the barbecue.

What upset many farmers wasn’t so much what was written in the report, but what came out of the mouth of the chairman, with his comparison of farmers to whalers, and then comments last week. These latest remarks seem to show a clear bias against agriculture in this discussion, and also a lack of focus on the fact that it’s a global issue and understanding the role New Zealand plays in achieving all the various international targets.

It’s the comments last week

By Andrew Hoggard FROM THE FARM that I take a lot of issue with and give me grave concern around the direction of the commission.

Firstly he said there would be no way for New Zealand farmers to “wriggle their way out of slashing emissions”. He then implied that not “slashing” our emissions would cost us in regards to trade. He again repeated the line that agriculture makes up half the emissions in NZ and seemed to suggest our low footprints per unit of food produced were irrelevant. And he finished up by pointing out China and India have a per capita emission rate of 4 tonnes per person whereas we have 12 tonnes.

Firstly it really seems like he doesn’t want to understand the difference between methane and the long-lived gases. It’s not the total of the gases that count in the end, it’s the additional warming they cause.

Given that methane emissions in New Zealand haven’t risen above the level they were in 2006, then we are not accumulating any more methane in the atmosphere from NZ agriculture. Therefore there is very little (if any) additional warming coming from this sector. We may make up half the “emissions” but definitely not half the warming.

On the trade aspect, quite frankly this needs to be looked at in a global food systems context. The world needs to consume not just calories but also nutrients. While the bulk of our calories can come from plants, the planet still needs animal agriculture to ensure that the whole population gets the

nutrients and micronutrients it needs.

It makes sense to do that agriculture where it can be done for the least amount of emissions.

I strongly doubt any of our global customers want to read about New Zealand’s carbon budget or our climate change response act. They just want an emissions footprint of the product they happen to be buying.

Far from being some made up stat that only New Zealand farmers use, the footprint methodology is what I see most of international agriculture focusing on.

Finally there’s the strange ‘per capita’ assertion he makes. It’s a very dumb measure in my opinion as the population is constantly changing. If we look at it in a different way, what is finite about countries is land mass.

Little old New Zealand has

0.18 per cent of global land mass, and we equate for 0.17 per cent of global emissions. India on the other hand is only 2.7 per cent of global land mass, yet 7.08 per cent of global emissions, and China 6.44 per cent of global land mass, but a whopping 26.1 per cent of global emissions.

Or let’s look at it another way: by all accounts New Zealand produces enough food to feed 40 million people. Let’s divide our total emissions over those 40 million people, and the number is suddenly down from 12 tonnes per person to 1.5 tonnes.

We seem hell-bent in this country on flagellating ourselves at the temple of climate change, rather than celebrating the good work our farmers do without the need for massive taxpayer subsidies like our competitors get.

We strongly need to remember

that this planet has more than one target it is working towards, it actually has 17.

They are the UN sustainable development goals. No. 2 on that list is ‘zero hunger’, No. 3 is ‘good health and wellbeing’, and at No. 13 is climate action.

The most logical way I see of achieving all three of those isn’t by the most efficient producers of food reducing their production, but actually assisting them in doing more.

Lincoln students mobilise Lincoln University students have sprung into action to help repair the damage caused by the recent Canterbury floods, which wreaked havoc in rural areas.

The Lincoln branch of the Student Volunteer Army and the campus Handy Landys club joined forces to start assisting farmers and landowners with cleaning up their properties.

“Raging flood waters have destroyed fences, caused sheds to collapse and filled areas with silt and rock, leaving debris strewn everywhere,” Rachael Phillipson, promotions liaison for the response team, said.

“Seeing all the damage, we recognised the need to help out.

We immediately turned to social media and our personal networks, putting advertisements and offers of help on community Facebook pages, websites and noticeboards, and began talking to people to spread the cause.”

The team also contacted Federated Farmers and Young Farmers groups, letting them know that they were ready to help.

Following the advertising efforts, they received a large number of requests and nominations for assistance, and club members were kept busy liaising with farmers to assess needs.

Last week a team of volunteers headed to a Dunsandel farm to help with clearing debris from the fencelines to return them to

The clubs have been working hard behind the scenes to process all the requests, obtain details and organise volunteers.

On Saturday, they headed to Methven to help empty the silt from a farmer’s flooded workshops. “[Then] we went to a farm in Waddington to clear flood debris and fix fences where the Hawkins River flooded.

“We recognise that the recovery from these floods will be a longterm effort for Canterbury farmers and we plan to keep working with them over the next couple of months, even after the water has receded, to repair the damage left behind.”

Meanwhile, the Guild family of High Peak Station in the Rakaia Gorge have thanked volunteers that helped clean-up flood debris on their property.

“This time last week we were in the eye of the storm with fences and bridges disappearing during the night. A week later a group of over 30 outstanding volunteers helped us on the road back to normality by taking on the mundane and back-breaking job of cleaning off all the fences.

Most of whom had been hit hard in some way by the very same storm.

“Farmers, builders, professionals, uni students, school children and even our local MP turned up to help get through more work than we thought was possible.

“We can’t thank you all enough for your generosity. It made those first steps in recovering from this so much easier,” the Guild family said on social media.

Hundreds of insurance claims following floods Rural insurance provider FMG says it’s received over 400 claims to do with the floods in Canterbury.

After the heavy rainfall and flooding caused devastation across the district, farmers quickly turned their heads to checking their property as the event moved from response to recovery.

FMG spokesperson Nathan Barrett said it’s too early to put estimates on how much overall repairs

will cost.

“It’s early days and, as you can imagine, we are moving from that response phase to recovery,” he said.

“We won’t get a full picture of the insurance impact for several weeks at least, as it takes time for people to assess damage.”

Third new Bovis case in a month A Mid Canterbury grazing property has been confirmed with the cattle disease mycoplasma bovis, the third new case in the district in the last month.

The property is connected to the existing Canterbury cluster, a Ministry for Primary Industries spokesperson said.

Another two properties, one in the Ashburton district and the other in Selwyn, have been cleared of the disease after completing the culling, decontamination and cleaning process and are now able to get back to normal farming activities.

“Our South Island regional team have checked in with all farms with cattle infected with M. bovis and all farms with cattle under movement restrictions while they are undergoing testing.

“The team will continue to check in regularly, offering our support and we have people ready to assist affected farmers as needed.”

M. bovis was first detected in New Zealand in July 2017, after cattle in a South Canterbury dairy herd began displaying symptoms of a novel disease.

Since then, 171,421 cattle have been culled and $205.1 million paid in compensation to farmers in a national bid to eradicate the disease.

Unbeaten weekend on the turf

The Mid Canterbury men’s senior hockey side saved their best until last at the Ian Smith Tournament in Oamaru over the long weekend.

After a week of no games or training on the local turf due to the flooding in the district over the previous week, the side travelled south hopeful rather than confident, but an unbeaten weekend lifted plenty of spirits after a challenging few days for players and supporters alike.

Competing in four matches over the course of the two days of the tournament, Mid Canterbury managed three draws in their first three matches, before hammering home a big win in the final game of the tournament.

The side’s first game of the tournament was against hometown heroes, North Otago.

After a frenetic first stage of the match, Jacob Gray managed to be in the right spot to pounce on a deflection to put the green and golds on top.

North Otago, however, were able to snare a goal back, and despite plenty of opportunities

side through Hayden Sinclair put them back in front again and a win looked likely until a penalty stroke right on full time saw the match end in a draw.

Refreshed on Sunday, the side

went back onto the turf to take on Eastern, but found themselves chasing the game as their rivals set the tempo.

A late goal in the first half to Tim Harford drew the scores level, before Sinclair put on a masterclass to grab another goal for the weekend to put the Mid Canterbury side in front.

But in a cruel twist of fate again, Eastern were able to score late in the match through a penalty corner, and the side again walked off with a draw.

After three games that could have easily been victories, Mid Canterbury took to the turf in the final game against Central Otago – who they hadn’t beaten in their last three encounters – and took the game by the scruff of the neck.

Hayden Bonnington scored the side’s first goal, but the recurring nightmare continued when Central Otago levelled the game up heading into the break.

But that only spurred Mid Canterbury on, and they grabbed three second half goals, with Sinclair grabbing his third for the weekend, Harford notching up his second and then Stephen Blain rounding out the match for a 4-1 victory to end the tournament.

Diamond just eludes Morrison

For a fleeting moment in Cambridge on Sunday, John Morrison thought he was going to come up Diamonds.

And while his bid to topple one of this year’s Harness Jewels hotpots, Bettor Twist, might have come up short in the shadows of the post – the young Mid Cantabrian couldn’t have been happier with Life’s A Beach’s effort to run second, knowing just how much it meant to a very special young lady in his life.

Morrison tugged at the heartstrings of the racing industry on the weekend when a social media post revealed that he’d be carrying a sticker bearing the name of his No.1 fan, Charlotte McLeod on the inside of his helmet.

Charlotte is battling serious illness currently, but is unwavering in her support of Morrison and his harness racing exploits.

And Morrison said knowing that the effort to finish second would have brought a smile to her face was a huge boost.

“That made it all the more special, knowing that the race would have helped put a smile on Charlotte’s face,” Morrison said.

For a young horseman, still very much in the infancy of his driving career – despite being a two-time, and likely third-time, national junior driving champion, Morrison was given plenty of plaudits from within the industry for his heady drive on Life’s A Beach.

From a tricky second line draw, he managed to find a saloon path through the field rounding the final bend to get onto the back of Bettor Twist, and when he got to the outside of the favourite, he thought he was in with a chance.

“She (Life’s A Beach) travelled into it beautifully round the bend, we got a nice run through onto the back of the leaders, and I thought we were a pretty good chance of running her down.

“But she’s a super horse and she just kept fighting, and was too good for us on the day, but I was rapt with my filly, she’s gone an excellent race.”

Morrison’s effort for second was one of two big highlights for Mid

Canterbury at the Jewels, with Gerard O’Reilly’s effort to run third with the Geoff Dunntrained Laver another big result.

Parked three-wide for most of the trip, Laver was resolute and didn’t stop giving right to the line, narrowly going down for second but claiming third behind a rampant South Coast Arden in the fastest run race of the day.

As he predicted in the Weekend Guardian on Saturday, O’Reil-

ly said the hot pace played right into the hands of his charge.

“He was really brave, we didn’t get it easy but he just kept fighting like he does, it was a superb performance.”

O’Reilly earlier in the day had given locally-trained filly Sweet Belle a sweet trip into the race with Bettor Twist and Life’s A Beach, but her big season told late and she finished middle of the pack.

It was the same for three-yearold trotter Maui, who looked a big chance on the final bend of running in the top four before a tiring runner stopped all momentum and driver David McCormick was left with nowhere to go.

The biggest local heartbreak for the day though came with twoyear-old trotter, Highgrove, who led into the straight in the TwoYear-Old Ruby but rolled into a gallop, costing himself all chance.

Martin makes it four

Now, that’s a little more like it.

After a frustrating few weeks of results in Mainland Football’s New World Championship, the Mid Canterbury United Senior Men’s side bounced back to form on the weekend with a hiss and a roar.

Coming off the back of a number of consecutive losses, the side picked up their second win of the season on Saturday against St Albans Shirley Football Club in Christchurch, scoring five unanswered goals.

It was a huge turnaround in form for the side who constantly show plenty of promise, but are often met with strong resistance from big Christchurch clubs, and Saturday’s effort might just be the motivation the side needs to get the wheel turning for the remainder of the season.

As is usually the case with any Mid Canterbury United Football win, Luke Martin’s name featured prominently in all conversations.

The experienced striker was in sublime form in a man-of-

the-match performance netting four of his side’s goals – making use of some freedom to roam and pounce when the opportunity presented itself.

Joel Chand, also in good nick, grabbed the side’s fifth as they drew themselves level in competition points with St Albans on the overall standings in the championship.

This week it’s a little tougher, the fourth placed Burwood – who have a 50 per cent win strike-rate for the season – will travel to the Ashburton Domain to take them on, in what should be a really good clash, given Mid Canterbury’s confidence booster on the weekend.

It wasn’t quite as happy a hunting for the Reserves side though, who fell to St Albans 5-2, but again there were plenty of encouraging signs with two good goals, one from Rory Brown and another from Ben Sutton.

In Divisional football, Methven kept their strong first appearance in Division One going with their fourth win of the season when they beat University 5-1 away in Christchurch.

The side now sits fourth in the standings in the competition.

and can move into outright second this weekend if they can beat Halswell United at home on Saturday afternoon.

The Mid Canterbury United fourth division side had a shock result on the weekend when they could only manage a draw out of their match with Papanui Redwood, 3-all.

The competition leaders managed to maintain that spot with the result though thanks to a double from Thabs Khabu and another from Keegan Gentle.

On Sunday, the Mid Canterbury Senior Women’s side put on a clinic in their visit to Christchurch, beating Western AFC Princesses 11-2 in a strong performance.

Yet, despite the final score line, the side were slow into their stride and found themselves down by two goals before they’d even lifted their heads.

That was it for Western though, as Mid Canterbury went on a goal-scoring spree to win the match easily.

Second on the standings behind the unbeaten Western Rebels side, they’ll be out to continue their good form when they take on Hornby at the Ashburton Domain this weekend.

Luke Martin was in sublime form on the weekend, scoring four goals for the Mid Canterbury United Senior Men’s side.

The future of franchise sport Hamish Bidwell RNZ

I

had to explain to my cricket-loving son who Devon Conway was, on Thursday morning.

Just as, in turn, I had to break the news to him that New Zealand and England were playing test cricket at Lord’s.

Conway, the New Zealand-qualified South African, scored a test hundred on debut (and went on to make it a double), opening the batting for the Black Caps on day one of their two-test series in England.

I’ll linger on the cricket for a moment, before turning to the broader question about the future of franchise and international sport.

Good on New Zealand Cricket (NZC) for signing their broadcast-rights agreement with Spark Sport. You hope the two parties are getting along famously and the cheques are clearing every month.

But in throwing their lot in with the streaming service, NZC have diminished their audience enormously.

Sure, they may be being paid handsomely at the moment, but what are the potential long-term issues that come with being invisible to a huge portion of the population?

Out of sight means out of mind and if a generation of aspiring Black Caps – such as my boy – don’t know the team is playing and who’s in the XI, then what does that do to your pathway?

Devon Conway produced a remarkable test debut against England.

Mind you, we can all be excused for ignoring this test series.

New Zealand’s premier fast bowler Trent Boult isn’t playing, and nor are half of England’s star players.

They’re all “recovering” from the truncated Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament, and saving themselves for more consequential games to come.

New Zealand have their World Test Championship clash with India, while England have series against India and Australia that they’re priming their best blokes for.

For generations of New Zealand players and fans, a tour to England was the pinnacle. Now

it’s just a nuisance, to be fit in around a player’s freelance work.

Barely a murmur of dissent has been uttered here or in England, which brings me to my broader point.

Franchise or club sport is where the money and prestige increasingly lie. Be it football or basketball or now cricket, the international game is becoming an afterthought.

There’s no debate about whether club or country comes first.

The IPL, for instance, offers the big bucks and the players now prioritise that accordingly.

That’s fine, but fans aren’t fools.

They can spot an inferior product, as this Black Caps series is,

from a mile away, and will treat it accordingly.

But what happens when rugby goes down this road, when a private equity company or a billionaire decides they want the best footy players in the world appearing in one league?

Whether it’s existing teams, or newly made ones, we will eventually see the game’s brightest stars in the same competition.

And when that happens, playing for the All Blacks will be as inconsequential as it is to tour England as a New Zealand cricketer.

Some of Europe’s biggest football clubs tried to launch a breakaway competition recently, while the world’s top golfers are being pursued by a Saudi-backed super league. Heck, way back in the 1970s, Kerry Packer was able to buy enough elite players to create World Series Cricket.

You can’t say the rugby franchise model in this part of the globe isn’t ripe for improvement, or even exploitation.

Never mind fans being a bit lukewarm about Super Rugby Aotearoa and, particularly, its trans-Tasman successor.

Even some of our leading players such as Brodie Retallick, Beauden Barrett and TJ Perenara prefer to play their franchise footy in Japan.

What’s more, we’re going to pick them for All Blacks duty from there too.

We’ve become conditioned to this stuff.

To rotation and rest weeks and

sabbaticals and, soon, selecting blokes on the strength of their performances with overseas clubs.

The curiosity for me is will we meekly accept players being unavailable for All Blacks duty – to prepare for or recover from their franchise footy – or will we kick up a stink?

The cricket thing astounds me.

I’m amazed by how weak boards are and how they continually acquiesce to the wishes of players.

They’d far rather diminish their own product and culture and tradition than risk some IPL player making themselves unavailable for international matches. Far better to let them pick and choose when they want to play, than bypassing these games completely.

I’m pleased for Devon Conway.

It takes all sorts of attributes to leave your native country and try to crack the test ranks in another.

I’d probably prefer to see him bat five for New Zealand – then four when Ross Taylor retires – but a spot existed at the top of the order and he’s filled it well on this occasion.

But when the home team opts to rest their IPL stars and says tests against India and Australia are much more significant, then the shine is somewhat taken off Conway’s achievement.

Cricket has prioritised the franchise format and you wonder how long it can be until rugby finds the right vehicle to follow suit.

Southern storm home RUGBY

Southern scored 27 unanswered points in a comeback win over Prebbleton in Mayfield on Saturday, to book their place in the Combined Country Rugby Final.

Down by 16 with 20 minutes to play, Southern stormed home to stun Prebbleton 36-25, and will now host Southbridge at Hinds – if the grounds are ready in time after last weekend’s flooding.

Coach Jon Dampney had to pull on the boots, and did so in style, scoring the go-ahead try as Southern surged to victory.

The final 20 minutes was impressive, and they will hope to carry that momentum into the final, but a wayward, illdisciplined first half will be a focal point at training, Dampney said.

“We made life hard for ourselves,” he said.

“Dropping kickoffs, silly penalties, and simple mistakes that kept them in the game.

“We will have to work hard on some aspects this week, as we won’t be able to get away with those sorts of mistakes again in the final.”

Southern were their own worst enemies in the first half, forced into a lot of defending – with the wind at their backs – due to illdiscipline.

Prebbleton dominated territory and possession, but struggled to convert it into points as often as they should because Southern’s defence was more often up to the task.

Southern could only muster two penalties to George Williams to trail 6-10 at the break, and after Finn Cleary was yellow-carded, Prebbleton scored twice to open up a handy lead.

Down 9-25, things were starting to look pretty dire for the hosts.

Things hadn’t been going Southern’s way, and they needed three scores to win the match.

After a forgettable first half, fullback Matt McAtamney started the comeback with a scything counter-attack from deep that ended up with his brother Josh scoring in the corner.

The turning point, however, was when Petero Tuwai found some space on the outside and made a surging run into Prebbleton

Big finish books final berth

Petero Tuwai was again a force to be reckoned with on the rugby paddock.

The momentum swung completely.

“We made that break, the boys lifted and the rest is history,” Dampney said.

Moments later Tuwai bumped off several defenders and barged over next to the posts, with

Williams adding the extras to make it 21-25.

It was game on, and on came Dampney, who had an immediate impact taking the kick-off cleanly – something Southern had previously struggled to do.

However, Southern conceded a penalty, only for Prebbleton to miss the shot at goal and a possible seven-point lead.

Moments later Williams made a break, and the ball went wide to a flat-footed James Hastings, who beat his man and scooted down the flank to score in the corner and give Southern a 26-25 lead.

From the kickoff, Southern’s indiscipline again looked likely to cost them, but Prebbleton’s touch-finder was a shocker that sprayed infield and went dead,

letting the hosts off the hook again, just as they returned to having 15 players on the field again.

Southern went to work, grinding their way upfield, and earned a five-metre scrum in which Dampney exploded off the back and powered through three defenders to score.

With a six-point buffer and the clock ticking down, Southern secured the kickoff before Tuwai had a pick-and-go from around his own 22 and found a clear field, beat the last man, and cantered clear to seal an epic comeback victory.

In the competition’s other semi-final, Southbridge held off Kaiapoi 26-18.

“We haven’t played Southbridge for a few years, but we know they are big and physical with a good 10, but our biggest focus this week is concentrating on ourselves.

“We showed in that last 20 minutes what we are capable of,” Dampney said.

Southern head into the final as defending champions, having drawn with Glenmark-Cheviot back in the 2019 season, while Southbridge are three-time winners, coming south to beat Rakaia at home in the 2017 final.

Golden run on the mats

The golden run of members from Ashburton’s Jion International Karate Dojo continued at the weekend at a double-header event in Dunedin.

After a strong season on the mats around the South Island, the team trekked south for the long weekend with high hopes of continuing that form at the South Island Secondary Schools’ Championships and Otago-Southland Karate Championships and did just that – walking away with 13 medals from the two championships.

Competing at Memorial Park Hall in Mosgiel, the team began the weekend with the South Island Secondary schools’ event and were in a dominant mood, claiming eight gold medals across the championships as well four silvers and as many bronze medals too.

Making it more impressive was the fact that Ashburton Dojo only had seven members competing, with everyone coming home with some silverware.

Isabel Wang won the Kumite with Madison Edmond finishing second while the duo finished third equal in the Kata.

In the boys’ premier action in the same age group, Joshua Cannan produced two strong efforts to win the Kumite and finished second in the Kata.

As well as age group events, competitors also took part in the other titles during the championship.

Isabel Wang continued her good form with second placings in both the Under 14 Premier events, while Madison Soal won the Under 16+55kg Kumite and finished third equal in the Under 16 Premier Kata.

On Sunday the teams returned to the mats in Mosgiel for the Otago-Southland Championships and again were in dominant form.

Wins came courtesy of Desna Velusamy in the 10-11 years female development Kumite and Carina Lupse in the Premier Kumite in the same age group, Hoshua Cannan in the 12-13 Boys’ Premier Kumite and the Jion Togers, Isabel Wang, Medison Edmond and Carina Lupse in the Team Kumite event – with the trio also picking up a silver medal in the Kata.

28 CLUB NEWS Altrusa Club

At the June meeting Denise Hydes, the President for the 2021-22 Altrusa year, welcomed the Club members able to attend after memorable days of flooding in the district. Our Changeover Dinner in May at Farmers Corner was a very pleasant and positive event, which instated our new President and Board. Ashburton members and representatives from Christchurch, Timaru and Oamaru Clubs attended. Three members met with the Ashburton District Council Community Services as part of their on-going initiative to co-ordinate and profile local community groups and their projects.

We are assisting the Rotary Community Breast Milk Bank in Christchurch with funding towards a steam mop for hygiene purposes, as this service is also used by Ashburton babies and their mothers when needed.

Following our successful Fabric and Craft Bazaar in April, members used suitable materials left over to sew and press 104 sets of curtains to give to the Ashburton Curtain Bank, to be distributed, through local charity groups, to those who have need for them for winter.

Ashburton Lions

President Roger Paterson welcomed all to the Changeover and Partners’ Night meeting. He introduced twelve members of the Civil Defence team from Christchurch who are staying in Ashburton to assist with the flood relief effort.

Their work included welfare checks, food parcels and water which were dropped off to those who needed it.

This included animal welfare support.

Rural Support networks play a vital role to those who needed support on farms.

Fencing is one of the biggest needs, along with silt deposits. Some families came very close to having water running through their homes, others were not so fortunate. Keeping an eye on one’s neighbours is important; often they won’t ask for help. It was good to hear first-hand insights of the work Civil Defence are doing to assist in Mid Canterbury.

Ashburton Guardian Wednesday, June 9, 2021 There was a resolution from the Board of a donation of $1844.37 to the Ashburton Senior Citizens Trust for a new audio system (TV, sound bar, trolley). This Motion was carried.

Max Cawte gave a summary of the recent Talley’s visit, which was well received by those who attended. Talley’s are active in investing in Mid Canterbury and well worth a visit.

Graham Smith reported that the planning for the Big Smoke vs Rural Folk evening is progressing well, Life’s Worth Living and the Big Little Theatre Company are the beneficiaries of this year’s event.

A Toast to Lions International was given by Graham Smith. There are 46,000 clubs internationally, totalling 1.4 million members. 9,500 of the members are in NZ, 1,220 in our local District 202j, of which 485 are in our local zone, which is made up of nine clubs. District Treasurer Meredith Lowe replied to the Toast. He added that Lions Clubs International has its Head Office in Chicago, with three offices in the Asian region.

It has just 225 paid employees worldwide in Lions Clubs International, so it is overwhelmingly reliant on volunteers.

Entertainment for the evening was expertly provided by a local trio called The Entertainers with pieces such as Sweet Caroline, Ten Guitars and Peaceful Easy Feeling, all of which had the audience’s feet tapping.

Lions Chevrons were awarded to Tony Adams & Colin Morgan - 10 years of service; Murray Bonnington & Steven Thomas – 15 years; David Stewart & Brent Read – 30 years; Garth Madden – 45 years. Rex Whiting was awarded post humously for his 25 years of Lions involvement.

Brent Read received special commendation. Brent joined Lions in 1990 of which 16 years has been with 100 per cent attendance. He attends most if not all projects & social evenings and the award was made in acknowledgement of his leadership and commitment.

George Brown presented Marion Brown with a Lions Good Sorts Award. George noted her extensive involvement in Girl Guiding and the A & P Association. Gra-

By all accounts the course has pulled up very well after the recent deluge, thanks again to Ben and all the gang.

I have said it many times before, but we are truly blessed to have such a passionate greens team, and it certainly shows out on the course. Well done one and all.

On that, we can all help keeping the course in great condition. Carry a bucket of sand to fill in divots and repair any pitch marks on the greens. Even if you didn’t make them, if you see one, please repair it. The sooner it is repaired the quicker it will recover.

On the playing front. Jamie Stone led the way in the Champs round 3 qualifier with a superb net 70. Great score off the back tees on a chilly day. Runner-up was Ken Clucas with 71 and Josh Coyle rounded out the top three with 72. The final of the Newton trophy was completed alongside the stroke round, and with Ken getting second in the stroke it is no wonder that he and Lefty May were victorious over Steve McCloy and Stephen Lee. I am told that the delayed final of the Watson Cup will be finished off on Friday.

Next Saturday we have qualifying for the Presidents Trophy. This is a stroke round off the white tees, with the top 16 getting themselves into match play for the next 4 weeks. Get yourselves down give it a go, but if you cannot make all the match play dates, please let Matt know so he does not put you in the draw.

We have the inter provincial meeting tonight (Wednesday) at 5.30pm. We have a few jobs that we need to get names for.

Our practical evening night saw a range of displays set up to photograph. We had Blue Glass, marbles, different light sticks, wine glasses, model cars and more. It was very enjoyable to try photographing in different light.

Wakanui Women’s Institute

Wakanui WI members met at the home of Janet Butterick for their May meeting presided over by Julianna Protheroe.

Motto for the month was – No-one is perfect, that’s why pencils have erasers!

Correspondence included the Federation Newsletter and from NEC – Minutes of the 2020 AGM and the NZWI Annual Report and subjects for discussion at the 2021 AGM. Members moved a donation of $100 be made to the Ashburton St John. Wakanui WI will be supplying afternoon tea for the Ploughing Match at Wakanui on 13th June.

Clair West and Anne Copland will supply flowers for the Hospital this month.

Members discussed the Subjects for Discussion to be asked at the AGM in Wellington which will be attended by Dianne Carter, Sue Kent and Margaret Cullimore.

Jackie Girvan was our guest speaker for the afternoon, and she explained about the Community Housing Scheme in Ashburton. She told how accommodation was very hard to find at the moment and older people who had never owned their own homes were struggling to find rental houses. Ashburton Housing and Support Trust are addressing this issue and plan to build 17 houses in Mona Square where the Council has leased the land to the Trust for 50 years. Members agreed that Jackie was a very informative and interesting speaker.

Next meeting June 23 will feature a film at the Regent Cinema.
