PM makes most of a cheesy visit Cheesy scone recipe

The Prime Minister loved her cheese scones.

Anne-Marie Allen is so delighted she’s sharing the recipe.

Ardern and her entourage made a hastily arranged visit to Chris and Anne-Marie Allen’s property at Ashburton Forks on Tuesday morning.

They had morning tea with the Allens, then inspected their flood-ravaged property before flying to Christchurch.

Ardern first visited the supermarket before arriving in Ashburton by helicopter.

She had an aerial view of the devastation, was briefed by Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown and the Civil Defence team, thanked the volunteers, and then travelled to Ashburton Forks.

There, she presented the Allens with groceries including bread, milk, tea, and chocolates and, in turn, sat down to fresh cheese scones baked early Tuesday morning by Anne-Marie.

“She loved the taste,’’ Anne-Marie said.

“She had one-and-a-half scones and we provided her with butter and strawberry jam.

“The PM was engaged and informed. It was wonderful having her here.”

The Allens were informed the night before

by Rangitata MP, Jo Luxton, that they could have a Prime Ministerial guest, with the instruction Ardern wanted to “come and see them as they were”.

“We tidied up, did a bit of housework, and then baked 20 lady-sized scones,” she said.

The Allens entertained about 10 people in their living room, including cabinet ministers, Luxton, and their neighbours, the Clarks.

The scones “went down well”.

Anne-Marie has shared the recipe to the PM via the Ashburton Guardian “with her best wishes”.

Anne-Marie’s cheesy recipe is, as follows: 3C of self-raising flour 1T icing sugar, ¼ t salt, 50g cold butter, chopped, 1 egg beaten, 1 ½ C of cultured buttermilk (or 1 ¼ cup of unsweetened natural yoghurt) Milk, to brush.

■■ Preheat the oven to 240°C (220°C fanbake). Grease a baking tray or line it with baking paper.

■■ Sift the flour, icing sugar and salt together. Tip into food processor. Add the butter and process briefly until it’s blended.

■■ Mix the egg and buttermilk (or substitutes) together. Pour into the processor.

Pulse until a soft, sticky dough forms. Add a little milk if the mixture is too dry. (To mix the ingredients without a food processor, use a large bowl and rub the butter into the dry ingredients with your fingertips, before pouring in the wet ingredients).

■■ Turn the dough out on to a cold floured bench. With flowered fingertips, quickly pull it together and gently shape into a soft, smooth dough. Pat or lightly roll out to a 2.5cm thickness.

■■ Using a 5cm round cutter dipped in flour, cut scone rounds. Gently pull scrap dough together to finish cutting.

■■ Place the scones 2cms apart on the prepared tray. Lightly brush the tops with a little milk. Bake for 10 minutes, or until risen and golden.

Alpine rivers in firing line

A period of heavy and significant rain is being forecast to affect the Main Divide and Canterbury Headwaters over the weekend.

Canterbury Weather Updates analyst, Russell Voice, said that up to 200mm may fall over a 24 to 26-hour period, with peak intensities exceeding 20mm/h about the Southern Alps and Canterbury Headwaters.

Voice stressed the rain warning is not for the Canterbury Plains, however, the flowon effects may impact the alpine fed rivers – the Rakaia and Rangitata.

“Our main river systems are set to feel the strain later this weekend, with heavy and significant nor’west rainfall,” Voice said.

“A low-pressure system moves on to the West Coast of the South Island on Saturday, bringing a prolonged period of heavy rain to the Main Divide.

“Across the Canterbury Plains we may see scattered and steady rain at times late Sunday evening and this may linger into Monday next week, with a cooler southerly flow.

“Rainfall totals don’t look overly impressive, with around 4-6mm.”

Additionally, nor’westerlies will be strong to gale-force about the Canterbury high country, he said.

Don’t drive over the bridge if you don’t feel safe – Mayor

Neil Brown has assured residents of the district that the Ashburton Bridge is safe.

But Mayor Brown has advised motorists who may still feel unsafe travelling over the 80-yearold overpass, which was damaged due to the Canterbury floods, to avoid driving over it.

“It is safe to drive on and there is no risk,” he said.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) continued to loosen restrictions for motorists yesterday following extensive structural investigations at the site.

It was confirmed yesterday morning that high productivity permitted trucks, including 50MAX vehicles, were permitted on the bridge from 7am to 7pm, but only for the first week.

The bridge was closed on Tuesday morning due to a slump at one of the bridge piers.

But NZTA System Manager Pete Connors said that the bridge would need to be reassessed next week.

“We still need to take it one step at a time however, particularly as the debris is being removed from underneath the bridge,” he said.

“We need to keep monitoring the bridge deck and the pier for any movement during the day.”

Brown said that the NZTA had given him certainty that there

Both the mayor and Ashburton District Council chief executive Hamish Riach drove over the bridge together on Wednesday.

“It felt funny to drive across it after being closed for so much time,” Brown said.

“But it was good to do.”

Riach said it was a massive relief to have people able to move across the district again.

“Establishing the alternate routes also has been a tremendous effort,” he said.

“The alternate route being established and there was a lot of damage up country as well – that was no mean feat.

“Having the bridge back on-

line, albeit restricted at night, has been a tremendous relief to have people move around the district and through.”

Civil Defence extends Bridge reopening eases inland congestion state of emergency

The Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management Group is extending the state of emergency in the Ashburton District for seven days.

In a declaration at 4pm on Thursday, the state of emergency was lifted in the region from for Christchurch, Kaikoura and Waimate while the Ashburton, Selwyn, and Waimakariri districts was extended for seven days.

Group controller, Neville Reilly, said that the Ashburton, Selwyn and Wai-

makariri districts still required powers to assist with the response to the flooding that had hit the region over the past several days.

Meanwhile, Hurunui, Timaru and Mackenzie districts will move to transition to recovery.

This means that within the next 28 days they can use the powers available under the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act should they need them, for example, to do emergency works.

A re-opened Ashburton bridge has eased activity inland following the overpass’ closure earlier this week.

Mayor Neil Brown said additional traffic management along the Inland Scenic Route 72 had ramped up, but the bridge reopening along State Highway 1 had eased congestion.

“It’s obviously not doing as much as the

last few days because the main highway is open,” he said.

“It was good to get that bridge open again.”

Meanwhile emergency operations activity continues to toil away at the Ashburton District Council’s chambers.

Monitoring of river flows, ensuring sufficient transport access through the district for essential supplies, repairs to the district’s rural roads and overseeing the Methven, Mt Somers and Methven-Springfield water supplies remained the focus for council staff.

Four-year-old boy rewards ‘legend’

Methven boy Nixyn Fanning, 4, got the chance to meet a “local hero” this week at the Methven Fire Station.

A delighted four-year-old Methven boy has been reunited with a “heroic” fireman who came to the aid of the boy and his mother as the weather swooped.

Nicole Quilter and her son Nixyn had to contend with water leaking through the ceiling on the Saturday as heavy rain converged on the district.

“It was getting really dangerous because it was coming in behind electricals,” Quilter said.

With bursts of water coming through the ceiling, the distressed mother put a call out for help on a community page before putting a call into the Methven Fire Brigade.

A mystery man hopped on to the roof of the home and completed a makeshift repair.

“He then told us to isolate those switches and just made sure we were okay and then off he went.”

With her son eager to track the man down, it was later revealed to be Methven fire volunteer and “local legend” Dave McLeod.

Nixyn and his mother were later invited down to the Methven Fire Station where the youngster gifted McLeod some chocolates and a Lotto ticket.

“Nixyn couldn’t even speak,” Quilter said.

“We had a look around the fire station and Nixyn got to be a real fireman and dress up.

“Those guys have their own families, so to come out and help us, it was pretty amazing.”

Quilter said it also encapsulated the community spirit in Methven which remained one of its most defining characteristics.

“Everyone does tend to come together in a crisis, but there’s something very unique about Methven.

“I’m glad I moved here.”

Although keeping the old rental property watertight in the interim was proving challenging, Quilter said McLeod’s deeds were the difference between getting through the event in one piece and not.

She is now looking for a rental in the Mid Canterbury town, although admitted availability was very thin.

Owners at The Blue Pub and Brown Pub in Methven have offered rooms to affected families free of charge.

Chopper the only way home for Brian

Okay, so it wasn’t quite like that for Tinwald’s Brian Cavill, but his first ride in a helicopter on Tuesday is one he’ll never forget.

Cavill had to book a chopper ride home to Tinwald after the closure of the slumping, flood-damaged Ashburton bridge meant he could not drive back from work.

“It was my first trip on a helicopter, It was a lot better than I thought,” said Cavill, who actually had a mild fear of flying after a bad turbulence experience in the past.

“He was a good pilot and I had a good view of the flooding from up above.”

Taking the helicopter flight from the Ashburton Airport, the flight landed at the old grass velodrome in Tinwald.

car, Cavill said he was unsure what his grandson was saying in excitement.

“I think he was just really excited about his granddad being in a helicopter,” he said.

“It was a quick flight of three minutes.

It’s nice to be home.”

It brought to an end a day he, and many others in Ashburton, would never forget.

When he left for work, Cavill never imagined he would need to rely on a helicopter to get home because Tuesday had started like every other morning. He left home just after 6am, heading to his job at Welshy Contracting.

Crossing the Ashburton Bridge at around 6.15am, Cavill thought there was no issue for a bridge that was closed not long after he drove over it.

“I didn’t feel anything wrong with the bridge,’’ he said.

“I have travelled across the bridge for the last 30 years, I could safely say if I felt anything unusual, I would have just headed straight back home, reversing back the whole way if I needed to.’’

Tinwald resident Brian Cavill is glad to be home in his chair next to the fire after having to take a helicopter ride home from work.

Two trampers who were forced to extend their stay in the Mount Somers Walkway area over the weekend finally made it out on Tuesday.

Due to heavy rain in the area, the two trampers had to hold tight in Pinnacles Hut over the weekend, Department of Conservation’s Geraldine Operations Manager Duncan Toogood said.

“We did not have contact with the trampers directly, but understand they were in contact with the police,” he said.

The trampers did the right thing by waiting out the weather in the hut rather than trying to walk out in poor conditions “We provided police with the access code to the hut’s warden’s quarters to pass on to the trampers so they could access some extra food.

“We also gave some advice on the best route out when the weather cleared.

There was also a tramper who had to walk around 22km from Woolshed Creek Hut to the Mt Somers Holiday Park on Sunday morning in the torrential rain.

He had spent Saturday night in the hut and had then had to

walk down because he couldn’t get to his car.

The incidents are a reminder of the importance of following the Land Safety Code, Toogood said, including checking the weather forecast before setting out and packing warm clothes and extra food.

DOC confirmed the weather caused some damage to the tracks in the Mount Somers area and they have been closed, along with both Pinnacles Hut and Woolshed Creek Hut. There will be a review of the closure on June 8, as the road leading to the Woolshed Creek carpark has been badly damaged by the flooding.

Snowsetsdump up big opening

It was already shaping up for a bumper start to the new ski season on Mt Hutt before the ski area received a big dump of snow at the weekend.

The ski area’s new high-speed eight-seater chairlift – the Nor’ West Express – is ready for operation and all they were waiting on was some snow ahead of the scheduled opening on June 11.

They certainly got that.

Courtesy of the weekend’s storm, Mt Hutt Ski Area manager James McKenzie said Mt Hutt was shaping up to have the best ski conditions for opening for some time.

“It’s looking really good.

“The base area is sitting around 40-50cm which is pretty good on any standard start-up for a skifield.

“At the top of the mountain we have snow measuring up to 4 metres in depth, but once we groom it that will be around 3 metres, and it progressively reduces [in depth] as you come down.

“We have a really good snow base now that is locked in because the mountain is capped in ice so will take a lot to take it away, but we would welcome more snow.

“The mountain is pretty icy to be fair so it will be just trail skiing, but we have a lot of trail possibilities now and can groom everywhere, and we will groom as much as we can between now and opening day.

“We’ll have a ski trail offering that we usually wouldn’t be getting until July so it’s pretty good.”

There was no current avalanche danger, he said, as they had already occurred, with mixed results.

“One of the avalanches did some damage to our snow-making equipment, but at the same time it put the snow in a place where it’s quite useful.

“But we haven’t found a snow-making gun yet so it’s under the snow somewhere.

The access road is currently closed and will remain so for several days.

McKenzie said they had only just completed an extensive summer works programme on the access road on Friday.

“We spent a bit of extra money on it this year to get it really good and then a lot of that work has now been undone by the weather. We are just going back through now and cleaning it all up.”

They have the chairlift, the snow and now McKenzie has his fingers crossed things keep going their way in the next few days.

“We are just hoping everything tracks to plan.

“We have the opportunity to have a fantastic start, but it all comes down to the weather of course so we are keeping our fingers crossed.

Grigg calls for urgent, substantial action

National MP Nicola Grigg visited the devastation on her family farm in Mt Somers on Thursday.

The Selwyn MP has had a busy week touring her electorate, but yesterday made the drive south through Ashburton to the family farm, Surrey Hills Station, in Mt Somers.

What she was met with was the farm’s access bridge, driveway and paddocks having been washed out after the Hinds River breached its banks.

“We had stayed in touch over the phone since the rains began, but I hadn’t had a chance to get there myself [until today].”

As well as visiting the family she planned visits to other farmers in the area including the Aclands, Chris Allen and David Clark.

From what she has seen in the last few days, and the long drive from Prebbleton to Mt Somers, she believes more substantial action is required from the Government.

Grigg said the “paltry amount of funding announced by the Government” toward the recovery of flood-hit rural Canterbury “won’t even begin to scratch the surface”.

“The priority is to restore key infrastructure, like the Ashburton bridge here.

“But it’s not just State Highway 1 as there are multiple key roading networks.”

Ashburton and Selwyn are in the top five districts for roading network length and both have large sections severely damaged in the flooding.

The heavy rainfall impacted the quality of the water at the weekend and residents should boil their water for at least one minute before consuming. The Ashburton District Council is continuing to refill the water tankers stationed in Methven, on Main Street near the public toilets, and Mt Somers, near the Fire Station/ General Store, as needed. Take clean containers to fill for drinking water.

“But the bigger picture thinking long term it is not just the restoration, but about future proofing these networks.”

While admitting to being no expert on the Ashburton second bridge debate, she said there has to be long term thinking applied to whatever the solution will be.

The impact of climate change could see similar flooding events become more regular, she said, which means “we have to get to a point where the infrastructure can deal with these events”.

Grigg pointed to National’s long mooted four-laning of

State Highway 1 from Rolleston to Ashburton as a solution to the issue – and an estimated 2000 jobs it would create.

“The current plan is a temporary solution with no future focus to it.”

Another issue Grigg said that was plaguing the region is the Resource Management Act laws which have restricted landowners’ ability to carry out preventive measures, such as shoring up river banks and clearing out shingle beds.

Nicola Grigg “So much of this flood damage could have been avoided if farmers were allowed to clear and maintain rivers.”

She said given the situation, and the forecast for more rain, the government could step in with emergency powers and allow the landowners to get the job done.

Minister urges faith in vaccine rollout

“God won’t stop you catching Covid.”

This was the resounding sentiment delivered by the visiting Minister for Pacific Peoples in Ashburton at the weekend, who urged church leaders to convey the appropriate messages to its community.

A Covid-19 Pasifika Community fono was held at Ashburton Intermediate on Saturday, attended by Minister for Pacific Peoples Aupito William Sio and Labour’s Rangitata MP Jo Luxton.

Reassurance for the dozens of Ashburton’s Pasifika community in attendance was one of the key objectives, Sio said, “The vaccine is safe and that’s why we’re rolling it out.

“I think that was the vital information that I hoped people took away.”

of their faith, they’d be able to protect their communities,” he said.

“I’m asking our church leaders to be responsible and take the lead, get vaccinated and

“I’m saying to the church leaders that this virus doesn’t care whether you believe in God or not.”

An emphasis on misinformation and engaging with trusted sources was another issue which was touched on.

Minister Sio said some of the erroneous content on social media it had been a factor among the Pasifika community.

“It’s been raised in some parts of the country where there’s been a strong anti-vaxx view,” he said.

“I’ve been saying to our communities to just burn it, delete it, don’t share it because you’re empowering that misinformation.

“The correct sources are your own GP and the Ministry of Health.”

All residents are reminded to avoid coming into contact with floodwaters, and to assume it is contaminated. This is particularly so for the area below the Wilkins Road wastewater treatment ponds outside Tinwald where wastewater has mixed with floodwaters. Additionally, Lake Hood is closed for recreation and residents at Lake Hood are reminded to avoid contact with the lake water.

Wastewater from the Ashburton treatment facility has flowed into the lake via Carters Creek.

Stockwater races A number of stockwater intakes have been damaged and work is under way by the Ashburton District Council to restore these to service. Rural landowners with stockwater races are asked to inspect all races, clear blockages, and make repairs if safe possible to do so. Damage to main races should be reported to council immediately at 03 307 7700.

Rural support Specialist response teams consisting of Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and Rural Support personnel will continue visiting farmers in the most affected areas today to assess and provide support. Water testing Residents of properties affected by flooding who wish to perform water testing of their private water supplies are encouraged to contact a water testing laboratory. Laboratories that supply this service in the Canterbury Region are Eurofins Rolleston (03 343 5227), Hills Chemistry (03 377 7176) and Analytica Laboratories (03 662 9357).

Insurance To assist with insurance assessments, authorities are advising those whose properties have flood damage take photographs of the damage, and in particular photos that show the height of the water level.

Bringing life, colour to town

Ashburton is about to get a whole lot more colourful, and it all started from a Facebook tag.

After missing out on the Ashburton District Council’s competition to paint the power boxes around the district, Geraldine based artist Koryu Aoshima won over the public in the mural vote.

The wall behind Armadillos restaurant in the Ashburton CBD, will be his canvas, the biggest mural space Aoshima has worked with.

He will be working full time on the project for the month of June, he said.

Aoshima was due to start the project last Monday, however, the heavy rains delayed him making a start.

Weather dependent, Aoshima is ready to begin painting his colourful mural today and will be working full time for the month of June, with hopes for the mural to be finished by the beginning of July.

Aoshima finally got the council to commission him for his artwork, playfully suggesting he got retribution for being passed up on a previous council project.

“In a good way it was my revenge on the council, for not choosing me to paint the power boxes in the town,” he said.

“It is a clear space where people can take photos with them and the mural, because people do like to take photos with them, which is cool,” Aoshima said.

he’s the sweet smiling princess of world politics, but substance rather than fluff from our much-loved Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will be the expectation from flood ravaged Mid Cantabrians.

Ardern, having seen first-hand the devastation of the biblical-like floods that all but washed parts of the Ashburton District away in less than 72 hours, has pledged that she and her Government were ready to help.

“Whatever you need, let me know,’’ Ardern stressed to media and community leaders after a helicopter fly-over gave her a bird’s eye view of water-logged Ashburton on Tuesday.

Ardern said the right things, but that was no surprise because she’s an expert at doing just that.

She has undoubted star power and can provide a boost and

lift in spirits just through her presence. But she also has an enviable crisis management track record that we should not forget, having led New Zealand through a terrorist attack, a natural disaster and a global pandemic – and she’s done so by focusing on kindness and compassion.

Ardern again showed all those outstanding communication skills and leadership qualities in her brief visit to Ashburton, meeting and thanking the council’s evacuation management team, shouting morning tea and impressing hard-hit farmers Chris and Anne-Marie Allen, whose property was a serious flood casualty.

So, on the PR scorecard, that

was a pretty big tick for Captain Kindness. But now the hard work begins. Now she and her Government will have to earn the trust and respect of Mid Canterbury by backing up those words. “Whatever you need.’’

Goodness knows, but Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown probably summed it up the best when he changed his initial “tens of millions’’ recovery cost to three times that again.

So now it’s down to the PM and the Government to deliver on their promises. This is our time of need. We need you. And it’ll take much, much more than Ardern’s popularity and charisma to get the job done.

A week like no other W

ell, where do I start?

That was a week like no other I’ve had on the

radio.

I was nursing a sore head on Sunday morning, after overindulging a little at ‘Beer Club’ on Saturday night.

To be fair, Lakeman is a very moreish drop. Nek minnit I get a text from Peter Mac saying, “I’m going in, the river is bank-tobank, we aren’t far from a State of Emergency, I reckon”.

I followed a couple of hours after and the State of Emergency was declared around that time.

We tag-teamed it on air for the rest of the day and I ended up walking out of the studio at 9pm.

Sunday night’s sleep was very light, listening out for rain on the roof and I ended up crawling out of the scratcher early and was in the studio just as the 3.30am update from Civil Defence was hitting the interweb.

It was a big morning with news of road closures, damaged bridges, stories of rescues by helicopters and tractors filtering through during the morning.

I stayed on an extra couple of hours until noon and The Country Show. Pete had a very busy shift from 1pm-6pm.

Tuesday another 3.30am start with CD updates. At 6.50am Mayor Neil Brown rings me with an urgent update: “The Ashburton Bridge is closed. It has a slump and cannot be used.”

This, of course, was the start of a massive day!

OFF THE AIR

Is there an inland route available? I was hearing rumours that people were getting over the river inland.

Council was saying there was no official route inland. Nek minnit, Pete texts: “I’m across”.

An hour or so later he wandered into the studio and said he’d carefully and quietly made his way via Mayfield and Staveley.

Just as I was about to hand over the controls, I had a thought, CD are wanting to keep the inland route unofficial, we better check in with them before Pete goes on air and therefore reveals that he had made it across.

It was requested by CD that the inland route wasn’t public until they had finished clearing it and I guess they wanted to keep numbers on it as low as they could. We all know now there were plenty already using it.

So, I stayed on air and had a busy afternoon, but things finally settled down enough for me to head off to a close-by motel (thanks NZME) for the night at 5pm.

I live over the bridge and didn’t fancy the hour plus drive through holes and water that night and early morning next day after a 13-hour shift, with an

I had so many offers of food and a bed from listeners, it was awesome.

A 4am start on Wednesday taking photos of the OPEN bridge.

Fantastic news! Just as I was messaging Manda with the news I’d be home tonight; news came through that they were closing the bridge for testing 10am to 2pm.

I made it home before it closed, and Pete made it over the other direction. I found it a bit freaky driving over the ‘slump’ the first time, but Pete was not too fazed about it.

Pete had a big shift in the chair from 10am to 6pm.

Yesterday was a quieter day, and I managed to finish at 11am after the trucks were given the green light to cross the bridge again.

In the past week I have spoken to many NZME breakfast shows and they have all been really interested in what’s going on here in Ashburton.

The support from our locals has blown me away. We have had so many messages.

Here’s a few of those messages.

want to start my writing today by saying thank you.

The weather event and flooding that our region has faced these past days has tested us, but our community spirit has stood up to that test.

Thank you to Mayor Neil Brown and the Ashburton District Council for your clear and concise messaging keeping everyone up to date and informed, to our emergency responders for working huge hours to keep us safe, Hakatere Marae for opening your doors when people had nowhere to go, to our farmers and rural communities whom have pulled together and helped with sandbags, tractor usage, food drop-offs and offering hot showers. There are countless more – to you all, I say thank you.

Damage to fencing, expensive equipment being water-logged or swept away, loss of winter feed, loss of stock – the damage and clean up is daunting and as Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said whilst assessing the damage firsthand in Ashburton, we are here to help our farmers.

The Government will be standing alongside them.

Whilst in Ashburton, Minister of Agriculture Damien O’Connor declared the floods a medium-scale adverse event, unlocking funding of $500,000 for flood recovery measures.

The funding will help speed up the recovery of farming businesses and includes wellbeing support and specialist technical advice.

The money will be used for

recovery grants, to enable our Rural Support Trust to provide extra help to our farmers, and for other flood assistance where needed.

This is not a final figure.

We will continue to access further support as the full extent of the flooding damage becomes clearer.

I am committed to helping our rural community get back on their feet.

Funding has also been contributed to a Mayoral Relief Fund which provides an additional way to help communities bounce back after an emergency.

Local communities and councils are well-placed to know exactly what they need so this funding can be used, for example, to meet the needs of affected families and individuals, community organisations or marae.

The funds will be provided to the Christchurch City Council Mayoral Relief Fund to be disbursed across the Canterbury region.

The Ministry of Social Development has also activated Civil Defence Payments.

If you were stuck somewhere other than home or evacuated, experienced a loss of income

due to your workplace being closed or not being able to get to work, need emergency food, clothing or bedding if yours has been damaged by flooding – you should contact 0800 752 102 to apply.

You do not need to be on a benefit to access this support.

Designed for customers who prefer to have a physical screen rather than the barrier of air provided by the Active Air Management System (AAMS), as well as to meet local legal requirements in some states in the USA, the windscreen variant – which will be among the rarest of McLarens – is revealed in full for the first time, with images of the prototype car.

which when combined with a dry lightest weight of less than 1300kg and a mid-mounted, 815PS, twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine, delivers the ultimate in driver exhilaration.

The screenless Elva is McLaren Automotive’s lightest-ever road car and the target for the windscreen version is only 20kg heavier, even with the inclusion of electronically synchronised rain-sensing wipers, washer jets and sun visors, as well of course as the heated glass windscreen within a carbon fibre surround.

The Active Air Management System (AAMS) is deleted as it has no role to play in the windscreen car.

The acceleration of both versions is comparable with that of a McLaren Senna, the screenless model reaching

100km/h from standstill in 2.8 seconds and covering 0 – 200km/h in 6.8 seconds*.

Dynamic performance and vehicle stiffness also remain unchanged from the screenless car, as does the scintillating driving experience. The windscreen, which is a permanent fixture, affords greater protection from the elements but it does not in any way reduce the levels of excitement.

The Elva links McLaren’s heritage to its present and future with a name and style that recalls the McLaren-Elva race cars of the 1960s. These were amongst the first sportscars designed and raced

HYUNDAI KONA II 2-litre ELITE

irst-up, there are no prizes, given its sign writing, for guessing that today’s story is about the latest model of the appealing looking Kona.

The reason for this so-decorated Kona being that the one from Hyundai NZ was belatedly diverted elsewhere (which with the weekend’s weather events that unfolded was indeed a very minor blip), so the folk at Hyundai Ashburton very kindly lent me their Elite demonstrator for a couple of days.

Currently the refreshed Kona range comprises of three, two-wheel drive versions, Entry, Elite and Limited, all with 2.0-litre petrol engines coupled to a new IVT (Intelligent Variable Transmission).

KONA II ELITE ■■ Pricing: Elite as driven - $39,990. The Entry model is $34,990, the Limited $44,990 and the 1.6 Turbo N Line AWD $49,990 (all plus on-road costs).

■■ Engine: 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol 110kW @ 6200rpm and 180Nm @ 4500rpm.

■■ Transmission: eight- step CVT auto, frontwheel drive Claimed overall fuel use: 6.2L/100km ■■ Size: 4215mm long,1800mm wide, 1565mm high, 2600mm wheelbase.

■■ Turning circle: 10.2 m.

Then meantime, the top of the range, pending the arrival of the N (mentioned later) is the more performance focused N-Line.

This one is complete with a 1.6-litre, 146kW/265Nm turbo-petrol, seven-speed dual-clutch auto, all-wheel-drive, sportier multi-link rear suspension and a touch more aggressive styling.

But then, later on this year, the N-Line’s position will be overtaken by the high-performance N, which Hyundai say is its first ‘True Hot SUV’, possessing versatility with spirited acceleration (0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds, when Launch Control is activated) and racetrack readiness, with a maximum speed of 240 km/h.

It’s powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 280kW (290kW on overboost) and 392 Nm. It has an 8-speed, wet, dual clutch auto and electronic limited-slip-diff, all-wheeldrive, a variable exhaust system and even more in-your- face looks.

Meantime, its back to reality and the Elite as driven, whose 2.0-litre, Atkinson Cycle engine delivers 110kW at 6200rpm and 180Nm of torque.

While that peak torque occurs at 4500rpm, it pulls very well from lower revs, and now being coupled with that new efficient transmission with its eight simulated gear ratios, showed how well it is set up, for both around town and during the limited open road driving that was possible given the road conditions.

With the previous Kona models, my preference was always for the optional (and more expensive) 1.6-litre turbo /seven speed dual-clutch auto combination.

However the manner in which this new powertrain delivers in such a smooth and responsive way means I could well now need to change my mind, especially as the Elite was virtually brand new, having travelled only just over 200km when I collected it.

As well, this new transmission means improved fuel economy, with a stated overall figure of 6.2 litres/100km.

The selectable drive mode system (eco/ normal/sport or smart) allows you the option of choosing which you think best suits your driving style, but the ‘smart’ setting really does seem to live up to its name.

The now even bolder exterior looks are visually pleasing, with the completely new front panels, wider, gloss black radiator grille, sleek headlights, body cladding and smart alloy wheels.

While the looks of the comfortable, nicely-trimmed cabin are not as bold as the exterior, it’s neat, well organised and now loaded with so much more standard equipment than before, including many aids for driver assist, comfort and safety.

These include adaptive cruise control with stop and go function, wireless smartphone charging, electronic park brake, auto-headlights, rain sensing wipers, ambient lighting, a 10.25-inch touch-screen infotainment system and a Harman-Kardon sound system.

The comprehensive, active SmartSense safety suite features in all Kona.

This enhanced system includes, forward/blind-spot/rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist/alerts, lane following assist, rear occupant alert,

driver attention warning, downhill brake control, hill-start assist and dusk-sensing LED headlights.

There’s perforated leather seating.

Those in the front are heated, and the front passenger’s has height adjustment.

While retaining its relatively compact overall dimensions (its 40mm longer), with the front seats occupied, there’s sufficient head, leg and foot space in the back seats for a couple of standard-size adults to comfortably travel.

The luggage area will hold 374 litres, with a compact spare wheel, safety vest and first aid kit sitting below.

With the benefits of the revised suspension, (McPherson strut front and torsion beam rear) and Conti R18 235/45 tyres a confident, comfortable and quiet ride, both about town and on the sealed country roads driven (as far as possible away from rivers) was delivered.

Then, while it certainly has no pretences of being an off-roader, the combination of the also selectable Traction mode system with its ‘snow, mud or sand’ settings and the 170mm ground clearance means you can plan to venture a little further afield.

FINALE This eye-catching new, slightly larger, but still compact, very pleasant to drive Kona comes within an abundance of practical features, convenience, technology, safety, and economy. And as Hyundai may well say, that with these models, the Kona N-Line, the upgraded Kona Electric and in due course the hot Kona N “there’s a Kona for everyone”!

Raceway answers neighbour’s cry

Most sporting events in Mid Canterbury have been put on hold this week, but in one particular sector the adverse weather over the Canterbury region has seen one significant event moved into the Ashburton District.

Thoroughbred racing was set to be conducted at Christchurch’s Riccarton Park today, but a decision earlier in the week saw the meeting shifted to the Ashburton Racecourse.

With the venue to host a strong eight-race programme which gets under way just before midday.

day ahead in terms of draining from the deluge which struck the region.

“The flooding of training tracks at Riccarton Park and the workload required for training on the course proper while construction of the synthetic track takes place were all contributing factors,” it said.

Riccarton are nearing the final stages of the completion of their new synthetic race track which is set to be completed by the first day of the new thoroughbred racing season in August of this year.

For the Ashburton Raceway team, getting behind a fellow-club and helping them out when they are in a time of need is second nature, as it generally is across all codes of the industry and Raceway manager, Jeff McLaughlin said that the transition from Christchurch to Ashburton has been pretty seamless.

“There’s a bit of work behind the scenes that needs to be done, but nothing too major,” he said.

“It’s just one of those situations where you know you have to just roll up the sleeves and give them a hand.

“Talking to their track manager today (Wednesday) there is no chance they could have raced there, by the sounds of it.

“We’re in a good position with our track.

“It’s a Heavy11 at the moment, but it’s not bottomless it will be more like a summer heavy track than a true winter racing surface.”

McLaughlin said he hoped that locals would see the change in location and get out and enjoy the racing action throughout the day while lending their support to the Canterbury Jockey Club.

Big guns getting a rest

Superstar Crusader Sam Whitelock gets a break this week.

If the Crusaders hope to add a sixth title in five years to their trophy cabinet, they will need some help from Australian clubs in their pursuit of the Hurricanes and Blues at the top of the table.

With two rounds left ahead of the Sky Super Rugby Trans-Tasman final, the Crusaders trail their Kiwi counterparts by a bonus point and have a lesser points differential to both.

But, while the mathematical side of the competition has come in to play in the Crusaders’ bid for the decider, captain Scott Barrett has implored his side to keep things simple over the final fortnight – starting with their clash against the Western Force in Christchurch tonight.

“I think there are three things you focus on,” Barrett said.

“The first one’s getting the win, the second one’s getting the bonus point, then after that, if you have the luxury, try to get the points differential.

“But first thing’s first; you have to focus on getting the win, and the Force are going to present a strong challenge.

“We can’t think too far down the line about scoring tries and that sort of thing; the win is just as important as anything.”

The Crusaders have made a string of changes for the contest, with Richie Mo’unga, George Bower, Sam Whitelock and Sevu Reece all being rested.

Fergus Burke will lead the attack at first fiveeighth, alongside halfback Bryn Hall who starts ahead of Mitchell Drummond.

Prop Tamaiti Williams has been rewarded for some strong play off the bench with a start in place of Bower, while Leicester Fainga’anuku pushes out to the wing in Reece’s place, with David Havili and Braydon Ennor pairing up in the midfield.

Quiet week on the turf

Senior B tightens up There was a real tightening of the ranks of Mid Canterbury Rugby’s Senior B competition as the Centennial Mug began last Saturday with Methven’s continued dominance the only constant from the way things ended in the Michael Duff Memorial.

The round one winners made light work of their first match-up of the second round when they comfortably took down Southern out at the Hinds Domain, winning 40-7 to push them to the top of the standings straight away.

But outside of that match, things were kept very tight. With a combined three points separating the other two matches, Michael Duff Memorial finalists, Allenton walked away form their trip over to Collegiate with a draw next to their name after they battled out a

17-all draw with the combined side in some very wet conditions for Saturday afternoon rugby.

Out at Celtic, the Celtic side picked up a valuable win but had to fight hard to fend off a good Mt Somers side who are really starting to pack a punch this season with a strong squad of players.

Senior B rugby takes a break this weekend for Queen’s Birthday but will return again on June 12 for the second round of the Centennial Mug, where Allenton will host Celtic, Collegiate and Hampstead will play Southern and Mt Somers will be out to exact revenge on Methven and try and grab the Bruce Beckley Challenge Shield from the side who took it from them three weeks ago.

It’s been a quiet week on the NBS Hockey Turf in Ashburton this week and it’s set to continue into the middle of next week too.

In the wake of the devastating flooding around the district, there’s been no hockey played since late last week and with most competitions having Queen’s Birthday weekend off, a decision has been made to cease all play until things were due to return next Wednesday night.

“It was going to be a quiet weekend anyway, but we won’t play anything here until Wednesday,” Mid Canterbury Hockey boss, James Tavendale said.

While the turf has held up well during the flooding around the district, access for a lot of players has been difficult and Tavendale said that player safety and not adding further stress to the situation was paramount when it came to making decisions.

“A lot of our hockey players come from the rural community so we have to be mindful of the situation they are in, it’s pretty simple in that respect.”

Decisions would be made over the weekend as to whether or not play will return next week and the hockey community of the Ashburton District would be instrumental in that decision.

“I think we’ll gauge the opinion of a lot of our players as we go along and see where they are at and then go from there.”

While there’s no hockey locally, two representative sides will be in action over the course of the long weekend.

The Mid Canterbury Senior Men’s side will travel to Oamaru for the weekend to compete in the Ian Smith tournament while the Mid Canterbury Under 18 Girls’ side will compete in the Queen’s Birthday Weekend Tournament hosted by Canterbury Hockey.

Lifting the veil a win-win

aomi Osaka could be onto something here. The decision by the four-time tennis grand slam champion to skip post-match press conferences at the French Open ought to be applauded.

Osaka cited mental health as being among her reasons for opting out of the obligation of fronting the microphones and cameras, believing the whole process provided an opportunity for “kicking a person while they’re down.’’

The last thing a defeated player wants, Osaka said, is to front these media interrogations and she was no longer prepared to “subject’’ herself to the ordeal.

I absolutely respect that view and would be surprised if many athletes in any code disagreed with the world No.2.

But let me go a step further and say it’s not only the mental health of sportsmen and women that would be improved by such a boycott.

My interest in hearing from athletes is pretty much nil.

I abhor these manufactured and stilted set-pieces. They are absolutely beyond awkward, as you squirm in your seat.

Athletes hate the media and often rightly so.

Just as the media dislikes many athletes too.

Doing away with the whole thing can only make everyone’s life better.

Players and coaches offer little insight and regularly let their disdain for the would-be questioners show.

Sighs and eye-rolls are the least of it sometimes, given the way some people sitting at the microphones openly talk of the contempt they have for you.

Let’s lift the veil a little bit here and provide some local context for what Osaka is talking about.

There are sports in New Zealand who relish media coverage and are happy to make players and coaches available to you.

Often, you’ll get to interview them one-on-one, which makes for a far less adversarial experience.

Requests are taken and then the player you’ve asked for will put a smile on their face and at least try and speak to you in a civil fashion.

Rugby is a different matter, though. In rugby you’ll get what you’re given and, if you don’t like that, then you’ll get no-one.

Rugby prefers a press conference or an “all in,’’ during which

media types surround the person the team has rolled out. No matter how bad a talker or how irrelevant to the situation, this is the player who’s been “put up’’ and that’s that.

In my experience, other sports – such as cricket and football – have done similar, without any right to.

Rugby is big here and rugby is doing you the favour. You need the content and they are prepared – albeit grudgingly – to provide it.

Frankly, the media are the ones doing some of these other codes the favour and should be rewarded accordingly.

But I digress. This is about press conferences.

An All Blacks press conference is excruciating.

In my time, if thenhead coach Steve Hansen wasn’t talking that day, then

they were pointless too.

There’s a hierarchy at play.

Certain people get to ask their questions first and set the day’s agenda. If things take a turn that those at the top of the media food chain don’t care for, then the sighs and eye rolling aren’t restricted to those sat at the podium.

You’re expected to bow and scrape at the player’s feet, no matter how many times they mention that they don’t read the media and don’t respect any of the opinions expressed.

You just laugh nervously and try to summon the strength to stammer out the next question.

If you’re unlucky, you’ll also be taken aside afterwards and told off for your line of questioning or for something you had published that morning.

There are days when you’re left utterly drained

and humiliated. Worse still, there remains great chunks of audio to be transcribed and straw to be spun into gold.

This is where Osaka could be onto something.

We know players don’t want to do these press conferences and, in my experience, the media can’t stand them either.

Who would lose out if these things went by the wayside?

Fans?

I genuinely don’t know. Are they captivated by players’ press conference quips? Would their connection to, say, the All Blacks be diminished by not reading about who’s rooming with who this week and who had to shout the coffees after the obligatory game of golf?

Don’t know about you, but I’m happy just to get that kind of insight via a press release or a players’ social media feed. Spare me the stress of a press conference.

Gone are the days when an opportunity existed for the Fourth Estate to potentially hold the great and the good to account.

To glean the answers the public demanded and to be told the honest, unvarnished truth.

Press conferences are an ordeal for everyone so let’s do away with them.

Chasing North Island riches Michael Lawson will be out to add to his already impressive haul of Island Championship titles this weekend at the North Island Indoor Bowls Championships in Rotorua.

Two of Ashburton’s top indoor bowlers will be hoping to sneak in and out of the North Island this long weekend and come home with at least one Island championship title next to their name for their efforts.

Michael Lawson and Grant Wilson will travel to Rotorua today

to compete at the biennial North Island Indoor Bowls Championships which are held from tomorrow through to Monday.

And they go north with a target on their backs as former champions in one of the three events held over the course of the weekend.

The local duo will combine forces with Otago players, Daniel French and Keri Te Tamaki, in the Fours on Sunday – an event they

won as a quartet back in 2018.

The four are favoured to go deep into the competition again this year, but will meet some strong combinations in the post-section stage of the competition.

Before that though, Lawson and Wilson will combine to make a formidable pairs combination on Saturday and be hoping to show some good form with the New Zealand Indoor Bowls

Sixteen local players will be in action across both the Open and Masters events with former national winners, Lawson, Simon Thomas and Mark Sheard all featuring in the line-ups for the week.

Lawson is no stranger to winning an Island pairs title; he’s won three South Island pairs events to go alongside his other five Island titles throughout his illustrious playing career.

Wilson will sit out on Monday with French, Lawson and Te Tamaki combining in the triples to round out a big weekend of play.
