Flood costs soar Bridge repair now the focus

From “tens of millions’’ to three times that again.

That’s the view from Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown on what the recovery cost to the district could be following the one-in100-year floods and devastation of the past three days.

Initially, Brown thought the recovery from the floods would be in the “tens of millions”. But after the volume of water flooded Ashburton rivers and into farmland on Monday night, wiping out even more fences, roads and bridges, he estimated the repair bill could cost “three times, tens of millions.”

A key part of that cost centred

around the Ashburton bridge, which Brown said could be out of action for weeks, though it could also be open much earlier with the New Zealand Transport Agency having already started to test its strength with 12 to 14-tonne concrete blocks.

The bridge was closed at 6.45am on Tuesday after it reportedly dropped vertically by about 150mm. “(But) if there’s movement (in the bridge testing), that’s not good,’’ Brown said.

“But if there’s no movement, it means we could get light vehicles across within a day.”

Christchurch structural engineers had been onsite working on the bridge into the night yesterday, but Mayor Brown warned “you can’t repair anything until

the water subsides”.

“Overnight, an amount of water has gone into the piles of the bridge and part of it has dropped four to six inches,” he said. “The engineers are here to assess it and decide what needs to happen.

“They can’t get into the riverbed and check the foundations until the water reduces.”

Yesterday morning, Brown received good news from Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who in her flood visit to the district said: “Whatever you need, let me know.”

Brown said they needed Government assistance with ‘’infrastructure and relief for farmers”.

With the bridge closed, about six crews were working on inland routes, such as Thompson’s

Track, to have them opened as soon as possible, the mayor said.

Brown also said the weather event had evolved from a rain to a transportation issue. He also said there should now be urgency over where the second bridge should be located.

“Once that’s locked in, we could stay with physical work starting in 2025 or pull it forward one year,” he said.

And Mayor Brown, after a draining three days as the district’s leader and front person for flood updates and information, admitted he had a good sleep on Monday night.

But he had “only slept three hours the previous night’’.

“I was concerned about everything and wondered what we can do better.”

Tuesday morning was like any other day for Morgan Mitchell, which started with dropping her partner off to work.

But she never knew she wouldn’t be able to pick him up.

Mitchell, in a one-car family, routinely dropped partner Ruben Pitney off at Ashburton Meat Processors.

“It’s the usual. I can’t let him bike all that way to work from Tinwald,” she said.

But this was different. Mitchell noticed that the bridge didn’t feel as rigid as normal on her drive.

“I noticed a spongy feeling as I was driving across the bridge to drop him off, but it was worse driving back into Tinwald,” she said.

“It is really noticeable, especially if you travel that road almost every day.”

Mitchell got back home in Tinwald at 7.40am, getting the council text alert 10 minutes later.

The alert said the bridge, which she had just crossed only minutes before, was now closed due to severe damage after the previous day’s flooding.

“I felt a bit of panic,’’ she said.

PM’s visit lifts farmer’s spirits

Ashburton Forks farmer Chris Allen says he and his wife, Anne-Marie appreciated a visit to his flood-ravaged property from a “sympathetic and engaging’’ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

The PM’s chopper flew over his property yesterday to give her an aerial view of where the Ashburton River had broken out before landing and having morning tea with the Allens.

“Her party, which included Minister of Agriculture, Damien O’Connor, Rangitata MP Jo Luxton, and Mayor Neil Brown, was interested and focused on what was required,” Chris Allen said.

“I asked that the impediments be removed so the government knew what needed to happen and support from the ministry and Rural Trusts could be given.

“The Prime Minister was sympathetic and engaging.’’

Allen’s property was extensively damaged, with Chris having no real idea as to the extent of the ravaging, but believes it could be in the vicinity of $300,000.

He saw a stationary car in a paddock on the south side of the Ashburton River and contacted the emergency authorities.

“It had gone sideways on to a neighbour’s property,” he said.

It was already surrounded by water and he realised that police might be too late, so he rang his neighbour, David Clark, who arrived by tractor with life jackets.

Clark was able to reach the stranded car, which was over its bonnet in water, smash the window and pull two people to safety.

“It was pitch black, which made things difficult,” Allen said.

He believed the rescued occupants should buy a Lotto ticket.

“We would have been looking at a statistic otherwise.”

But yesterday they had a ray of sunshine with the PM’s visit, which may have happened because Mid Canterbury’s Federated Farmers’ president and neighbour, David Clark, considered the Allens’ farm was one of the worst affected.

“She (Ardern) liked our cheese scones,” Allen said.

Prime Minister says we’re here to help and met with Mayor Neil Brown and emergency officials, while briefly meeting the media afterwards.

But Ardern dodged the question about the ADC’s speed in approving a much debated new bridge, saying she was in Ashburton to be briefed about the flood situation.

Rescued Methven family grateful to local pub

A cry for help as floodwaters surged.

The Williams family were left wondering where they would be spending the night as they drove through the downpour around 5pm on Sunday after their property having succumbed to the lingering threat of rising levels of the nearby Ashburton River.

But so often as has been the case over the past few days, community spirit prevailed, much to the relief of the family of five.

Earlier though, it was panic stations for the family as the climate descended.

“I was at work [Sunday morning] and got a phone call from my landlord saying that the Ashburton North Branch had burst its banks,” patriarch Tim Williams said.

The family, who are based on the river side of the Methven Highway, watched floodwaters overwhelm the low-lying paddocks near their property before the family hastily made plans to evacuate.

“I thought ‘we’re getting out of here’,” he said.

Family relieved when evacuated

When water started flooding on to the Edwards’ property in Hinds on Sunday, they were grateful to receive a call from Civil Defence.

Tamati and Lashai Edwards saw the entrance to their Winslow Road home being cut off by water from a ford overflowing from the Hinds River and were alarmed.

“I have three children under five and I felt scared,” Lashai said.

“I was stressed out. I was worried for them.”

Civil Defence was alerted by a neighbour and came and assessed the Edwards property.

They saw the water flowing on to the property and evacuated the six family members on Sunday afternoon.

“It was getting worse.

“We sat in our lounge, looking at the stop bank and hoping the water wouldn’t flow into the house,” Tamati said.

Tamati said Civil Defence gave them 45 minutes to pack

up and they were then taken to Hakatere Marae.

“We have no family to stay with locally so are so grateful to the marae,” he said.

Yesterday and today, families checked out their properties to see if they could return to them.

Other people, who stayed at the marae on transit, were looking at ways they could travel home.

Michelle Brett, chair of the Hakatere Marae Committee,

said 18 people stayed on the marae on Sunday night.

They ranged from an individual to the Edwards family of six.

“We’d been in conversation with Civil Defence and said we were able to care for evacuated families. It’s part of what we do,” Brett said.

“It’s nice to know we’re doing something that helps the whanau.”

It’s the second time the marae has been activated, the first time was in 2019 during the Rangitata floods.

Brett and her team were ready to go “but we weren’t needed”.

This time they were, and the families were fed and entertained in the lounge area and stayed the night in the wharenui, the big house, that sleeps 80.

“It’s like what we do at home,” Brett said.

She is grateful to marae volunteers, Maori wardens and Civil Defence who assisted her.

“It proves the value of having a place like this in Ashburton for whanau and the community,” she said.

Drinking water The Ashburton District Council has issued a precautionary boil water notice for Methven township, MethvenSpringfield and Mt Somers water supplies. Due to difficulty running treatment in the flood conditions, plants were running without any filtration at all and water quality was poor - particularly for those connected to Methven water scheme. Water tankers are available in Methven, located near the public toilets on Main Street, and Mt Somers, near the Fire Station/General Store.

Rainfall Many places in Canterbury saw 2-3 times their average rainfall for the month of May in only three days. Over a 72-hour period, between midnight Friday and midnight Monday, the Environment Canterbury rain gauge at Mt Somers totalled 540mm - a third of their annual rainfall and more than nearby Oamaru gets in a typical year. The Mt Hutt weather station recorded 350mm, the Hinds Plains site record 185mm in the same time span. Niwa reported that its Lismore site received 238mm in two days, the same amount it had received in the previous 187 days.

Rural leaders urge NZTA to get on with second bridge

Time to get over it, time to get on with it.

A one-in-100-year flooding event has sparked calls for urgency around a second Ashburton bridge by the district’s rural leaders with the town’s sole bridge now out of action indefinitely.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern would not be drawn on questions around the second bridge issue when she fronted media in Ashburton yesterday.

“The priority right now is connecting people with Ashburton,” Ardern said.

Federated Farmers’ Mid Canterbury president David Clark said it was now time to get on with it.

“It’s time for the politicians to stop arguing and it’s time for central government to get on and fund a second road link or a modern road link through the centre of the South Island,” he said.

“We are now in a situation where the only bridge over the Ashburton River at the moment is the Highway 1 bridge.”

The Ashburton District Council confirmed yesterday morning that the 80-year-old bridge was closed indefinitely, finally succumbing to days of floodwater after motorists reportedly felt it slumping.

Alternative routes are urgently being explored.

A report on location options of a proposed second bridge has been in the works by the Ashburton District Council who were scheduled to present its case to Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) in the coming weeks.

Clark said how much further pressure needed to be put on the NZTA around the matter.

“We’ve been arguing about this for the 46 years that I’ve lived in Mid Canterbury.

“It’s time for them to get on with it and for central government to recognise the importance of an increased capacity on Highway 1 over the Ashburton River.”

Flooded farmers counting the cost of cleanup

As flooding recedes, Mid Canterbury farmers are counting the cost of damage to fencing, farm infrastructure and winter feed supplies.

Here’s what some farmers told reporter Heather Chalmers:

Mount Somers farmer Richard Wright of Tamar Farm: He said that after days of dealing with the deluge of rain and flooding, there were plenty of tired farmers.

“Trundling through water and mud all day is extremely tiring for everybody,” Wright said.

Tamar Farm has water boundaries on both sides, the south branch of the Ashburton River and Bowyers Stream, and terraces next to the river were flooded.

“We lost a lot of fences and I imagine we are losing crops with water washing through winter feed crops.

“We haven’t lost any stock as we managed to keep all stock on high ground and keep them well fed.”

Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers meat and wool chairman David Acland, of Mt Somers Station: He said about 350mm had fallen in a 36-hour period. Further inland, a NIWA rain gauge had recorded 530mm.

“We have lost some fences and the river is flowing through about 100ha of land. So there’s a bit of tidy up work to do.

Damage from flooding meant stations west of it on Blackford Road were blocked.

“All the shingle fans from Cleardale to the end of the road are washed out, so no one past us can get out.”

Dunsandel dairy exporter Synlait Milk: Flooding had caused significant damage to several of its suppliers’ farms.

Milk collection had been challenging due to road closures, but

no milk had been lost, Synlait chief executive John Penno said.

“Our focus will be on supporting farmers as best as we can as soon as the weather clears.”

Fergus Wakelin, who has a 70 hectare farm near Mt Somers: He said a breakout from the south branch of the Ashburton River had almost cut his property in half.

“We’ve had to shift all our stock and we only have a few paddocks

we can put deer in as all the other paddocks have broken fences.

“Close to the river there are whole fences and posts that have been ripped out.”

The property has 300 deer as well as cattle. He was checking with his insurance company whether he was covered for fencing damage which could cost $50,000 to repair.

During the worst of the rain he was up several times in the night to check that his house and livestock were safe.

A touring choir group from Ashburton remain in high spirits despite being stranded and unable to return home.

About 18 of the Ashburton College Phoenix Chorus and a handful of staff, including their bus driver, Ashburton District councillor Leen Braam, have been forced to remain at a Dunedin holiday park following severe

flooding, which has cut off the region.

The tour party were originally scheduled to return home yesterday after being in Dunedin for five days performing.

But with major State Highway closures south of Ashburton and the Ashburton Bridge in need of repairs, it is unknown how long the group will be grounded for.

“There is no problem, we’re quite healthy and safe,” Braam said.

“They’re all fine, they want to

go home, but they realise it’s better to stay here than trying to go home.”

He said they are planning on making another attempt to re-enter the district today, although it was dependent on a fast developing situation.

Yesterday, the Ashburton-Tinwald bridge along State Highway 1 was closed due to floodwater damage, effectively cutting off the lower half of the South Island.

Mayor Neil Brown said it could be several weeks before a repair

was completed on the bridge.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who flew into Ashburton yesterday, said that establishing a route from the north to the south was top priority.

“If we can’t get into Ashburton itself, some of the girls on the Tinwald side might be able to get home, but if the others who can’t get home, we can house them at my place,” Braam said.

“We’re fine, we’re dry and we’re positive, the girls are all singing at the moment in fact.”

Stopbanks withstand ultimate test If the big wet of last weekend had occurred 20 years ago, Ashburton could well have been under water says Angus McKay. In the early 2000s when the current Ashburton District councillor was the district’s representative on the Environment Canterbury Council, a plan was drawn up that would see stopbanks built along flood prone sections of the Ashburton River.

The project was a controversial one, largely because of the high

cost involved, McKay said, and it was his job as the district’s elected member to sell the deal to ratepayers.

“I was the rep who faced all the flak.”

It was a tough sell, McKay said, and he often found himself in the firing line from angry Ashburton ratepayers who believed the stopbanks, designed to keep the river contained during a 100-year flood, were not necessary.

In the 15 odd years since they

were built they’ve been tested, but last weekend they received their ultimate test and it was a test they withstood, McKay said.

“They saved Ashburton – this time,” McKay said.

The stopbanks were built as part of ECan’s flood management plan for Canterbury.

“The district council at the time was keen because it would allow more building to take place,” he said.

The founder of the Student Volunteer Army (SVA) is mobilising the troops to help with the cleanup in the district he grew up in.

In the aftermath of the February 2011 earthquake Sam Johnson, from Mayfield, rallied thousands of students to help shovel silt, clear driveways and roads and provide support for residents of the hard-hit suburbs.

Johnson said via social media that “after the earthquakes farmers in the Ashburton district helped out Christchurch in a major way”.

He was referring to the farmy army that downed tools of the farm to pitch in with the post-earthquake clean up.

Bus-loads of people from Ashburton and farmers with tractors, diggers and other heavy machinery went to the quake-ravaged city and worked side-by side with the SVA. Just over 10 years later, the SVA is planning to repay that kindness in the Ashburton District’s time of need.

“After these floods, we’re going to be focused on returning the favour,” Johnson stated.

He has put out the call for registrations and has already been in touch with Civil Defence, Federated Farmers and local MPs to prepare to get more boots on the ground in the aftermath of the flooding.

Ashburton’s first refugee resettlement family “seem very accepting’’ about being caught up in a flood-ravaged district.

The family of five arrived on Friday, having fled war-torn Afghanistan in search of a new place to call home. But they may have been left wondering just what kind of place they had arrived in as they settled in to their new home while outside the rains continued to pelt down for three straight days.

“We have kept them informed of the situation in Ashburton and they seem to be very accepting of the current situation,” Refugee Settlement Support Service (RSSS) team leader, Katy Harrington-Watt, said.

“I am sure they will be happy to see some sun and get out and about in their new neighbourhood.”

Since their arrival on Friday, Harrington-Watt said things have gone smoothly with the family.

“They are happy with their new home and have been very friendly and grateful for our support.’’

The flooding caused some complications, with some of the RSSS team unable to get to Ashburton due to road closures, she said.

“But we have an amazing group of volunteers supporting them on a daily basis.”

Now that the family is moved in the resettlement process is in full swing.

“The next week will be busy with appointments to get the practical issues sorted out, such as enrolment at school, banking, GP, and so on.

“We are planning for the children to start

Kathy Harrington-Watt school next week after the long weekend.

“They will be very keen to be with other children and to start making new friends.”

Once the children are settled into school, Harrington-Watt said the adults could begin language classes and would go through an orientation programme involving important agencies and information they need to know about living in New Zealand.

“Everyone who has met the family describe them as delightful and very friendly. I am sure they will settle in and make many friends as time goes by,” Harrington-Watt said.

By July, the district is set to be home to three families, with the next family scheduled to arrive in around six weeks.

Somerset spa?

Since work began on Burnett Street, The Somerset Grocer’s Mark Milmine has told his staff the big concrete pit in front of his café was a spa he was getting built for them.

And in Sunday’s deluge, his “promise” came true … much to the delight of Grocer staff.

Unfortunately no-one was pre-

pared to jump in and test it out, mainly because of potential sink holes, sharks and the possible repercussions from authorities, but still, what a good bugger for coming through for his staff … they wish!

Community spirit the ultimate stopbank

H

eroes and heroines are not born in times of peace and normality.

They morph from the ordinary to the extraordinary in the face of seemingly insurmountable adversity, when lives hang in the balance and when the future of their communities is often uncertain and under threat.

As the clean-up and recovery starts to be contemplated after Ashburton’s one-in-100-year floods, those extraordinary acts of heroism, bravery and community spirit continue to come to light from the past few days.

And one thing is certain about our Ashburton flood fighters.

They all wear the mantle of hero uncomfortably.

They’d rather talk about others than themselves.

They’d rather direct the kudos elsewhere. They deflect. They downplay.

They are the ultimate team players, who say anyone would have done the same.

Well, that’s wrong. So very, very wrong.

It’s impossible to mention them all but who would have acted without hesitation like David Clark did when the Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers’ boss hopped into the driver’s seat of one of his biggest tractors, steamed away in the direction of a car that was being swept away by raging floodwaters?

He got to the vehicle in the

nick of time to smash open the windows to rescue passengers, who no doubt thought their time was probably up.

Clark did it. Before breakfast.

That’s some start to the day.

Or what about the private helicopter pilot who answered a call to help by rescuing Ashburton dairy farmer Paul Adams in a dramatic manoeuvre, hovering over raging water?

Adams was hanging on to a tree, surrounded by floodwaters after being washed down the river after losing his footing while moving and trying to save stock.

The pilot completed a daring rescue but has since gone to ground, not keen on telling his story about his selfless efforts, which again underlined how small aviation businesses can

be such a vital lifeline during emergencies.

But heroes are not just about saving lives.

What about the farmer who took in 15 people evacuated from their homes?

Or the lady who checked on elderly neighbours to make sure they were coping when the threat of evacuation existed for half of Ashburton on Sunday night?

Or how about the good buggers at the Brown Pub in Methven, who provided free accommodation for anyone forced out of their own house because of the floods?

The evacuated Williams family, from up that way, were so grateful they did.

Plaudits, too, for the Can-

terbury 4WD Club for offering any of their 1000 members in their off-road machines to drive wherever to assist and get safely to places that many could not.

Stories have also emerged about businesses gifting free sandbags, use of carpet dryers, heaters and even portaloos.

They’re the sorts of stories and acts of kindness that say so much about the community we live in.

It says we care and that when the going gets tough we’ll do whatever it takes to look out for each other.

In the past few days, that has never been more obvious.

There have been caped crusaders wherever you looked.

‘Off the wall’ Facebook support for Guardian

he Ashburton Guardian continues to be humbled by the support that you – our readers and followers – continue to show us.

That support has never been more obvious than through the devastation of the once in a generation floods that have changed lives, killed stock, destroyed bridges, roads, infrastructure and properties across

our district in the past few days.

Through those dramatic, tension-filled times, you came to us for the trusted latest updates, photos, information and flood videos. And you came to us in staggering numbers.

We know that because the Ashburton Guardian Facebook page received off the wall figures for people reached, views and engagement.

In one key example, the first video of a raging river near the Ashburton Bridge on Sunday morning reached 71,000 people.

Read that again because it’s one hell of a number.

That same video also attracted nearly 500 comments and was shared close to 700 times.

Importantly, the number of people who follow our Ashburton Guardian Facebook

page has also increased to over 14,000.

That may not sound like a lot to some people but when you consider that our fellow local media player, the Ashburton Courier, has less than 2800 followers and the Ashburton District Council has a tick over half of our figure, then it leaves us clearly in pole position in the district.

We thank you for that ongoing support.

Further to that, the Guardian-owned Ashburton App has also seen a huge spike in interest with more than 3000 new users on Sunday.

The app has also been opened over 10,000 times in the past three days to underline its importance as a communication platform.

Spicy chicken and green pea curry 350g potatoes 4 T cooking oil 2 t poppy seeds 2 t mustard seeds 1 large onion, sliced thinly 5 cloves garlic, crushed 3 t ground coriander 1 t ground black pepper 2 t cumin 2 t turmeric 4 dried chillis (or ½ tsp chilli powder) 1 ½ C frozen peas 3 medium tomatoes, diced 1 T tamarind paste, dissolved in 1 ½ cups water 400g Tegel Fresh Chicken Skinless Thighs cut to same size as potato chunks.

New M. bovis lifestyle block case A Mid Canterbury lifestyle block is the latest to be confirmed with cattle disease mycoplasma bovis, as affected farmers are urged to take part in a confidential survey on their experiences with the eradication programme.

M. bovis programme director Stuart Anderson said the new case was connected to the existing cluster. This comes less than three weeks after a Mid Canterbury beef property was also confirmed with M. bovis.

There are nine active properties, all in the Ashburton and Selwyn districts.

Meanwhile, the team conducting an independent review into the M. bovis programme would like to learn from the experience and insights of farmers directly affected by M. bovis.

These insights will help shape the review findings and recommendations to strengthen New Zealand’s biosecurity system.

The confidential survey was an opportunity to tell the review team about the farmer experience with the M. bovis programme – the things that went well and the problems that arose.

The information collected will only be used in the context of the review and will be treated as strictly confidential. The submissions are anonymous and cannot be linked to any individual.

The survey takes around 15 minutes and farmers are asked

to complete it by June 11.

The national surveillance tools developed by the M. bovis programme, including bulk tank milk screening and beef surveillance continue to provide confidence that M. bovis was not widespread, Anderson said.

M. bovis was first detected in New Zealand in July 2017, after cattle in a South Canterbury dairy herd began displaying symptoms of a novel disease.

Since then, 171,393 cattle have been culled and $204.9 million paid in compensation to farmers in a national bid to eradicate the disease. Nationally, 255 farms have been cleared of the disease.

Synlait increases forecast Synlait Milk has increased its forecast base milk price for the 2020-21 season to $7.55 a kilogram of milksolids, matching Fonterra’s midpoint forecast.

This is a lift of 35 cents from its previous forecast in January, despite the Canterbury-based dairy exporter’s financial woes.

Synlait’s forecast for 202122 is $8, again equalling Fonterra’s opening midpoint for the new season.

Synlait chief executive John Penno said commodity prices had continued to outperform its expectations, predominantly due to strong

Chinese demand. “Combined with a relatively stable foreign exchange rate, we are pleased to increase our forecast.”

The lift in Synlait’s payout is despite it forecasting a loss of $20 million to $30m this financial year in the wake of Covid-19 sales and freight disruptions.

Synlait will continue to monitor movements and keep its farmer suppliers up to date.

Synlait’s final milk price for the 2020-21 season will be confirmed when the company releases its full year 2021 result on September 27.

Giera new Feds dairy chair

Most dairy farmers have coped well with the deluge of rain, although farms adjoining lowland rivers have been badly affected, Ashburton Forks being a particularly hard-hit area, says Federated Farmers’ Mid Canterbury dairy chair Nick Giera.

“Affected farms will have damage to fences, lanes, silt built up and possibly other infrastructure such as sheds and contents.

“The storm was well forecast and if they were able to, most seasonal dairy farmers dried cows off and moved them to grazing before the weekend.

“There won’t be many days of milking lost given that the season was drawing to a close.

“There are reports of winter feed crops being affected in the worst areas, but most areas will be okay, although feed utilisation will be low in the short term and farmers will have to reassess their feed budgets.

“Winter feed is generally tight around the district so this weather event will make things worse.

“I haven’t heard reports of widespread stock losses, but there have been individual cases of drowned stock that will be

a big blow for those affected.

A weather event of this magnitude during calving would be far worse.

“I have heard reports of some stock trucks not being able to move cows as planned, but no animal welfare issues and farm owners and sharemilkers are working together to manage as best they can.

“With a number of roads closed, winter milk farmers will have to dump uncollected milk and irrigate it when conditions improve, although I understand ECan is taking a pragmatic view of managing effluent.”

With the number of road closures, getting access to grocery supplies and access to feed stock that are grazing off farm is probably the biggest concern, Giera said.

“Repairing the roading network would have to be a priority.”

Farmers that are stuck should contact Rural Support Trust or ring 0800FARMING to get support from Federated Farmers.

Regarding Moving Day, farm owners have been understanding for those sharemilkers have been unable to move onto new farms as planned and feeding cows onfarm, said Giera, the province’s newly-elected dairy chair.

Giera, who replaces Chris Ford,

is a former agribusiness consultant.

For the last three years he has contract milked for Grant and Jan Early at Ruapuna. Together with his wife Tina he also has an equity partnership in a dairy farm at Ashburton Forks.

He previously spent 10 years working as an agricultural economist, mainly for Nimmo-Bell after completing a masters’ degree in economics and marketing at Lincoln University.

“The plan was always to go farming at some stage. I was working more and more overseas and we had a young family. Being away three or four months a year wasn’t great for family life so we made the change to go dairy farming.”

Growing up on the outskirts of Christchurch, he did not come from a farm.

“My father was a rural valuer and he had a background in farming, so I had an interest in farming early on.”

Giera said there was a lot of change that was occurring in terms of environmental regulations and more recently immigration.

“This does create uncertainty for dairy farmers.

Some Mid Canterbury farmers were still dealing with the stress of the mycoplasma bovis eradication programme.

Farmers urged to access support agencies DairyNZ is encouraging Canterbury farmers to look out for each other and access support agencies for any assistance.

“We have seen farmers working well together and supporting their neighbours through this weather event – it’s always encouraging to see farmers and rural communities working together in times of need,” DairyNZ head of the South Island, Tony Finch said.

“Good advance warning did enable many farmers to be pre-

pared, but we are working closely to monitor the situation and encourage farmers to keep farm teams and neighbours safe.”

With Moving Day currently also under way, many Canterbury farmers are attempting to shift properties and livestock.

“Farmers who haven’t started shifting should only move stock if the roads are confirmed as open throughout the route and the destination farm can receive stock,” Finch said.

“We encourage the farm owners, sharemilkers and graziers to discuss Moving Day plans and be flexible – as we know flooding has resulted in road closures and flooding on properties. Keep in close contact with transport providers.”

This is a significant flooding event affecting both urban and rural communities.

“For farmers, continued support is needed through the recovery phase. The initial focus will

be on livestock welfare, reviewing and securing necessary winter feed, and repairing on-farm infrastructure. Farmers should review their feed supply and how they can manage that, if there is a shortage.”

DairyNZ and primary sector organisations are working with farmers to support them through recovery.

“We know there will be challenges for some farmers, particularly around feed availability, an-

imal care and damage to farms,” Finch said.

For affected farms, stress will be an issue that may increase over the coming week.

“We encourage people to talk to friends and family and the Rural Support Trust or DairyNZ if they need any assistance.”

Dallas becomes hometown hero with first Super Rugby try

T

here’s a sense of ownership and pride that comes with being a Crusaders supporter in the heart of Canterbury.

You just can’t escape it.

Every pass, kick and side-step is filled with the weight of a region watching on and hoping for something brilliant to happen – and when it does, the emotion and joy of it all is over-riding.

Sitting in Methven’s Brown Pub on Saturday night watching the Crusaders take on the Waratahs in Wollongong was clear evidence of that.

And while enthusiastic cheering and clapping was par for the course throughout the match, as you’d expect, the biggest noise

came just before the half-time break.

And when local lad Dallas McLeod snatched a Richie Mo’unga pass and side-stepped his way over the line to score his first Super Rugby try, The Brown erupted.

Claps, cheers and handshakes, you name it.

That deep-seated investment in the Crusaders in this region, which is unlike any other around New Zealand, magnifies itself remarkably when there’s someone local involved.

In a small corner of the region, when someone from that area does something great, there’s a sense of pride and accomplishment that goes along with it.

Many of those sitting in the Brown Pub on Saturday night would know Dallas.

They watched him around the streets of Methven as a

anyone else.

It’s like there’s a sense of ownership in some ways.

And that’s what sport is all about as a supporter.

Lukes brave big wet to unleash another star

A decision to take a chance on the elements proved to be a successful one for long-time Ashburton harness racing breeders and owner Dave and Gaye Luke on Sunday.

With the Ashburton District under a deluge of water – the long-time breeders and owners made the trek up to Addington to watch their maiden trotter Majestic Upstart break through for career win number one, in atrocious conditions.

“We had a really good chat with Brent (Brent White, Majestic Upstart’s trainer) in the morning about it all and we made the decision to start and head up, and it proved to be a good one, with her getting that win,” Dave Luke said.

Luke admitted that there was also another reason they were keen to get up to Christchurch and that was to see son, Stefan, on his birthday, and the victory just put the icing on the cake of the celebrations.

“We were very cautious about it all, but at that point the roads were all open and we wanted to see Stefan, so we packed up a bit of a bag just in case and made the trip.”

The win of Majestic Upstart had been a few weeks coming, with the talented trotter building some worthwhile form in the early stages of her career.

Positively driven by Stephen McNally, she worked her way around the field on Sunday and had too many guns for her rivals, winning comfortably.

The win continued a wonderful line of success for the Lukes from one of their foundation broodmares, Spinster Star, whose progeny alone equates for more than 60 breeding, and almost as many owning wins, for them.

Included in that particular family line, one of a few they breed from, was the outstanding trotter Houdini Star, who won 16, as well as other notable performers, Trick Star (9), Highland Star (6) and Majestic Upstart’s dam, Starza Rising, who won five.

“We’ve been lucky with the breed we’ve had, and we’ve had a lot of fun – but there’s still a

few to come out of the woodwork yet.

“We just really enjoy it all though.”

Sunday’s meeting saw a number of Mid Canterbury stables staying put for the day, with late scratchings throughout the day of horses trained in the Ashburton District – particularly those higher up on the Canterbury Plains.

Being able to hang your hat onto a small part of something big is quite cool.

An association or a connection is often all it takes and, in a town as small as Methven, there’s plenty of opportunities for those to be born.

Being good enough to make a team like the Crusaders is a huge achievement in itself.

Rugby is one of the toughest sports in the world to break into the top percentile and so, largely by just population, small regions don’t often get those moments to savour.

So, it was only justified then that when McLeod did crash over on Saturday night that not only Methven, but all of Mid Canterbury beamed with pride, because it shows that through hard work and skill, it is possible to break the mould and be out there mixing it with the best.

Ricky creeps ever closer

A winning double on the weekend has shifted Mid Canterbury horseman, Ricky May to within striking distance of 3000 career driving wins.

The Methven-based horseman grabbed wins at both Addington meetings over the course of the wet weekend to shift to 2994 wins.

Both wins came in similar circumstances, with May producing his trademark patience to get Valley Star home at a decent price on Friday night against a good field of trotters, before he did the same for favourite punters with Songbird on Sunday.

Trained by Mark Jones, Songbird was dropping out of some Group One three-year-old fillies feature racing, and May sat last with the pacer before unleashing her down the outside of the track to win impressively.

May’s presence at Sunday’s meeting was in jeopardy on Sunday morning, but he made the decision to travel up to Christchurch while his home farm was met with a deluge of rain.

While he made the trip, the decision was made to leave stable pacer The Terrorfier at home, with many trainers concerned about having to travel through flood waters while towing horse floats.

Methven charging on

Methven United’s first foray into Mainland Football’s Division One competition is proving a fruitful one with the side snaring their third win of the season on Saturday.

If atrocious weather conditions are supposed to lessen the likelihood of a free-flowing game of football, they were well off the mark during the match at the Methven Domain, with 10 goals scored during the match, and Methven emerging on top of the score line 6-4.

With a 3-2 record for the season, Methven sit in a tie for third on the competition standings, but are two wins behind the second placed Cashmere Technical side who are second.

They’ll get a chance to advance their standing even further this week when they head to Christchurch to take on the winless University of Canterbury side at Ilam Park.

It was another tough day at the office for the Mid Canterbury United Senior side, who went down to the table-topping Waimak United at the Ashburton Domain in the New World Championship, losing 1-6.

Thomas books national berth

New Zealand Indoor Bowls representative Simon Thomas has booked himself a shot at national glory wearing the green and gold of the Ashburton Indoor Bowls Association later this year.

Thomas, who resides in Christchurch, but plays all his bowls out of Ashburton won the illustrious Henselite Singles on Saturday at the McNally Street Stadium and will now head to Dunedin to take on the best of the best from around the country in the national final in September.

To get there though, he had to overcome a really strong field of players from around the local district. 22 entries were received for the event and from that nine players made it through the qualifying stage.

Thomas struck fellow national representative Michael Lawson in the first round to bring the final field down to eight and then had to beat former South Island representative Ken Mackenzie in the quarter-final.

Thomas then played Jeff Nowell in the semi-final whom he beat to secure a final spot against Willowby’s Grant Wilson.

The 12-end final proved to be a nail-biter with the scores locked at 7-all going into the final end.

Wilson managed to secure

shot with his last bowl to hold the win, but Thomas played a near perfect bowl with his final delivery to grab the jack and pick up the required shot to win the match.

Sunday was supposed to see

the qualifying stage of the New Zealand Mixed Pairs, but due to the McNally Street Stadium sitting in what became a flood zone, the decision was made to call the tournament off with an alternative date to be decided.

At least they’re consistent.

If there’s one growing trend with the Mid Canterbury Senior Men’s Hockey team since their arrival in the Canterbury Hockey Division One competition this season, it’s that they always take a bit of time to find their feet in matches.

Not renowned quick-starters, the side lived up to their billing again on Saturday when they took on Harewood, and found themselves down by a goal after about two minutes of play.

That goal turned the tap on, though, and Mid Canterbury, awake to the game, set about producing one of their best displays on the turf this season, as they turned around the deficit to run away with the match.

Hayden Sinclair scored the side’s first near the end of the first quarter, after they tightened up on defence and produced some strong play to create some good opportunities.

Building on that in the second period, Jeremy Moore was able to deflect a shot off a defender’s stick and into the goal to give Mid Canterbury the lead.

Almost immediately from the pass-off following the second goal Mid Canterbury were back on attack and forced another penalty corner with Sam Bennett pushing the ball past the goalie with the help of another deflection.

The fourth for the day for the green and gold side came right near the end of the half when after a strong period of play, Thomas White dove to get a deflection on to the ball and sent it into the goal.

Despite a recharged and determined Harewood side waiting for them on the turf in the second half, Mid Canterbury were able to create plenty of space and kept the pressure up.

Bennett scored his second from another penalty corner, before Sinclair grabbed their sixth of the day and see his side home comfortably.

The win elevated Mid Canterbury up and into a tie for fourth in the competition standings at the end of the first round of play for the season.

All ten teams in the competition will play each other again before the semi-finals and a final are held late in August.

Meanwhile back in Mid Canterbury play was limited over the weekend at the NBS Turf due to the weather.

Southern out to dry

Southern are playing the waitand-see game during the middle of this week when it comes to what will happen with this weekend’s semi-final of the Combined Country Rugby competition.

Mid Canterbury’s sole survivors in the top flight of the competition, the side overcame horrific playing conditions and a dogged Darfield side on Saturday to win their quarter-final 25-12, and setup a second clash with Prebbleton this weekend for a spot in the final on home ground.

But just where that home ground is, remains to be discovered.

The weekend’s deluge across the district has caused more than

just a few logistical problems for the club early this week, but Southern Rugby Club president Phil Cushnie said there wasn’t much they could do, other than wait and see what unfolds.

“We’re sitting on our hands a bit right now,” Cushnie said on Tuesday.

“There are provisions in place, we just want to wait and see what happens with the roading situation before we make any firm plans.”

With Hinds severely struck by the weather and the entire Hinds Domain under water less than 24 hours after Saturday’s match, as well as roading issues including the state of the Ashburton Bridge on State Highway One, there’s a bit to work through.

The club has Mayfield as a viable option to use if needed and

it would seem that it is the most likely outcome given the extensive work that may be required to get the main bridge through Ashburton back up and operating.

For co-coach, Jon Dampney – Mayfield seems the best option and he intends on making use of the grounds there before Saturday’s match anyway.

“With the Hinds Domain out of action while it dries out, we were going to head into the EA Networks Centre to train, but with the bridge out we can’t do that,” he said.

“Luckily, we’ve only got three people on the Ashburton side of the bridge and one is the manager, so we can still have a get-together tonight (Tuesday) out at Mayfield.

“Then we just have to wait and see what the rest of the week brings, I guess.”

Dampney was beaming with pride after his side’s victory on Saturday, in what he described as an outstanding performance in trying conditions.

“You actually wouldn’t have thought we were playing in the conditions we were, the level of skill was incredible and even the ref and the opposition mentioned that after the game.”

Dampney said his side’s set piece and the tactical kicking in the match was what got them on top and they took plenty of heart out of the performance heading toward this weekend’s clash against Prebbleton.

Meanwhile, it wasn’t quite as happy hunting for Methven, who were Mid Canterbury’s only other side in the top stage of the competition. They headed to Southbridge for a daunting clash

against one of the competition heavyweight sides, and came out on the wrong side of the scoresheet, losing 37-10.

The team, who are battling a number of injuries, kept themselves in the match for most of the first 30 minutes, but were unable to repel the Southbridge charge as they ran away with the game in the second half to win comfortably.

It will, however, give them a good chance to rest up some of their walking wounded and return to the Watters Cup in a few weeks with plenty more men on the ground.

In other action from lower down in the competition on Saturday, Hampstead fell in the Plate section, losing to Ohoka 1124 but there was positive news

for both Rakaia and Celtic in the plaque section, with both sides picking up victories.

Celtic were right on song with a 55-14 drubbing over Hornby, while Rakaia got things back on track with a strong 39-21 win over Woodend at the Rakaia Domain.

All of the Mid Canterbury sides, except for Southern, get a chance to sit out this long weekend before returning on the 12th for the next round of games.

Methven will head over the river to take on Darfield in a playoff for seventh and eighth while Hampstead will head up to Ashley to play.

Down in the plaque section, Rakaia will jump over the river to Rolleston while Celtic will have a slightly longer road trip up to Woodend.

Weather brings netball to a halt

Mid Canterbury Netball have jumped on the front foot and put a halt to netball this week.

In light of the situation around the Ashburton District following the weekend’s major weather events, netball heads met on Tuesday morning and made a number of key decisions which will see no play at the EA Networks Centre for the remainder of the week.

Most importantly, there will be no Premier Netball action this Thursday night.

“We are cancelling this week’s round of Premier Netball on Thursday night and declaring all games draws, as we do not have room to push this competition out at the end of the season,” they said in a statement.

Declaring a draw for all matches is the best possible outcome for teams, with Thursday night marking the start of round two of the competition, leaving all teams on a level-playing field when the competition returns next week.

Due to Queen’s Birthday weekend, there was to be no netball on Saturday so there was no need for a decision to be made there, but an Under 16 competition, set to be held at the EA Networks Centre has been cancelled as well.

Mid Canterbury Netball and the Christchurch Netball Centre were jointly holding the Tupuranga Championship, but its cancellation won’t see it held again until next year.

Tonight’s round of social netball has been postponed, but with some wriggle-room in the calendar, it’s just a case of pushing things back a week.

“We will at this stage bump this draw back a week.

“All going well, we will get going again next week and the new finishing date will be August 11.”

The only other major event for the week, Year 3 and Year 4 Future Ferns competition, which is held on Fridays, has also been cancelled.

Ashburton County Lions

The Ashburton County Lions held their monthly tea meeting at the Ashburton Hotel on Wednesday the May 26.

First up the club got the opportunity to listen to Beatrice Bernate whom we had sponsored to attend the week long Berwick Outdoor Experience. She was a delightful enthusiastic girl who obviously made the most of all the opportunities to challenge herself and along the way formed lasting friendships and lifelong memories.

The main speaker for the night was Kathi Craig, a renowned opera singer who has recently moved to Ashburton with husband Malcolm Hopwood. Kathi grew up in Dunedin and had a love of singing from a very early age. She was part of a group which won the 1972 Mobil Song Quest. After training overseas, Kathi played the lead role in operas such as Carmen and Tosca. Kathi also faced challenging times when on several occasions her health impacted on her ability to sing but her passion for singing helped her through. She also loves to teach others to singing and has worked in this area for many years. We hope that her love of singing and skills as a teacher will now inspire budding singers in Ashburton.

Annette Beeston was then inducted as a new member of the club.

Thanks was given to those who recently helped with Meals on Wheels and to those who opened their homes and hosted another very enjoyable ‘Guess who’s Coming to Dinner’ social evening.

The meeting ended with some humorous tail twisting and the drawing of the raffle.

Ashburton Golf Club

Not much golf took place last weekend, so just a quick blurb.

The course was not officially closed on Saturday, so the Watson Cup and Newton trophy finals kicked off. By all accounts both games got through 9 holes and were all square, and with the rain getting heavier they all decided to return at a later date to finish the matches. One other 4 ball of hardy souls ventured out for a paddle, hats off to Chris R, Bruce, Gaby and Hoppy who struggled through nine as well, then thought that the MSA bar might be a tad more enjoyable.

This weekend we have round 3 of our club champs qualifying, stroke round off the blue tees should be fun. On Monday we also have the White trophy. This is a mixed day playing foursome, so please pop along and join the fun.

I will try again to call an Inter Provincial meeting next Wednesday June 9 in the clubrooms at 5.30pm. Everybody welcome, promise we won’t take more than 45 minutes.

Ashburton Pakeke Lions

President Lion Jim Martin extended a warm welcome to Members and Visitors to the May meeting of Pakeke Lions.

Apologies were read by George Cartney and the Social Ladies were welcomed.

Lion Jeanette Tarbotton introduced the guest speaker Kathy Harrington-Watt who is Team Leader for the Refugee Settlement Support Service in Ashburton. Kathy outlined that the Service is responsible for taking approx. 110 quota

Things were a little bit wet on the Ashburton Golf Course this week. refugees over a 12-month period and of this half will be children.

The first family arrive on Friday May 28 and are Hazara people from Afghanistan.

The family will be housed and will receive help in Education, Health, & English to help them settle into the Ashburton community.

This family has travelled to NZ via Pakistan and Malyasia over the last several years. After questions asked by members Cathy was thanked and presented with a certificate of appreciation by Lion Bob Crane.

Cynthia Tindall then read Grace and a hearty meal followed. First V.P. Lion Robert Spencer reported on his incoming Board Appointments and Lion Jim Young advised of forthcoming social events.

A number of members are attending the local musical and also the Pink Ribbon Brunch at Robert Harris.

“Guess whos coming to Dinner” is to take place on June 18th.

An outing to Christchurch to attend “Once” is on the agenda.

Treasurer Lion Peter O’Neill outlined to the Club a forthcoming trip to the International Antartic Centre in Christchurch for the Special Needs Students at the College, a group that our club have been supporting for many years. Members present voted to finance this outing for these Students.

Also, Lion Dave Bennett reported that the Club has been approached to help India with the Covid-19 crisis through the LCIF Fund.

A barbeque is being planned for the Volunteers in the local St Johns Community to be held at the Plains and the Club has been asked to provide the lunch.

The trophy winners in the Club’s annual Golf Tournament are: Handicapped Ladies: Ina Divers, Handicapped Men: George Cartney, Non-Handicapped Women: Liz Horrell and Non-Handicapped Men: Jim Martin.

Tailtwister Lion Trevor Andrews entertained with a fines session and raffles were drawn. The singing of the National Anthem closed the evening.

The next meeting of the Craft Group will be on Monday June 14th at the Tea Kiosk at 10am.

President Julie Fechney welcomed members to the May meeting.

The quotation was “Energy flows where attention goes”.

The Assignment for the meeting was “Get a text message from an unknown number saying “meet me outside now”!

Members wrote of little black dress, confusion, monster nightmare, alarm, Uber, make change, surprise party, footsteps, the boss, hope, box. The instant exercise was to write a story about magazine pictures that were given out.

Members wrote of beautiful chateau, book haven, favourite dress, elegant figure, lonely life, pot plants, life long dream, ghostly figures, spice drawers and after party.

The meeting concluded at 8.45pm.

The June assignment is to incorporate a recipe into a story, not as easy as you might think.

Mid Canterbury Provincial Rural Women

Recently we held a Movie fundraiser at the Regent Theatre. A big thank you to David, Donna and the team for this opportunity and also to those who bought tickets and attended the movie. “Dream Horse”. Such a great movie and storyline, to lift ones spirits. All who exited the show had a great smile on their face and were bubbling.

With the news of the impending closure of landline phone lines, I’m sure the smile will be wiped from some of these faces.

For those who don’t have cell phones, computers or no cell phone reception, how will these people cope with this situation? Many are still digesting and adapting to how they will manage without cheque books.

For change to happen successfully, the change needs to be gradual to allow those vulnerable, elderly and isolated folk to adapt. We will keep a watch out for when this will happen on our area.

With the inclement weather at present, it shows what great spirit Rural Folk have.

The phone calls, messages and txts going around the neighbourhood have been heartening, especially when you know a lot of these farmers are in the thick of mud, water and feeding out, to keep stock fed and safe.

The next meeting of Mid Canterbury Provincial RWNZ is on Friday 11th June, 2021, at the Sinclair Centre, starting at 9.30am with a cuppa. Guest speaker will be Sarah Clifford from Citizens Advice Bureau.

Southern halfback Will Mackenzie looks back to referee Russell Lane for confirmation of a try during his side’s quarter-final victory against Darfield on Saturday. Southern won the match 25-12 in true winter rugby conditions, and will now host Prebbleton in the semi-final this weekend, with a shot at the Combined Country Rugby title up for grabs.
