Record numbers for Mt Hutt opening day 2021

Over 2200 people descended on Mt Hutt for the opening of the 2021 season on Friday, which also marked the opening of the new Nor’west Express chairlift.

Ski area manager James McKenzie was thrilled by the record turnout that eclipsed the previous record for an opening day back in 2009 when 2093 people hit the slopes.

He said there was quite a buzz up on the jam packed slopes.

“Everyone is stoked the season has kicked off and that the new Nor’west Express chairlift is spinning.

“We’ve got a great early season base which has set us up well for the winter ahead.”

With the ability to carry up to 3000 people per hour the new lift is a game changer for the ski area, he said.

“This lift really changes how people access the mountain.

“It’s now only a two-minute ride to our terrain parks and mid-mountain trails which means more laps for everyone.”

Eight enthusiastic skiers spent a night or two on the mountain to score the first seats on the new 8-seater.

They included Ben Yorston who made it nine years in a row for his first on chair spot while Christchurch’s Brendan Lindsay camped out on the ski area for two nights to claim the bragging rights to a first seat.

The Ritchie family also spent a night ensuring they were first in the queue.

Before taking off for their first runs they had to wait for Sir John Davies to cut the ribbon and officially open the Nor’west Express.

Methven local Lana Schiphorst, who has attended numerous opening days, has already chalked it up as the best yet.

“It was the first open day I’ve been to in a few years and it was definitely the most people I’ve ever seen up there for it,” Schiphorst said.

“The vibe was awesome, everyone was stoked to see the new lift in action.

“The Nor West Express is amazing. The seats are super comfy and the speed from bottom to top is going to mean more runs in during the day.”

After a bumper opening day, things aren’t expected to slow down this weekend – as long as the weather plays ball.

Mt Hutt’s ski season is scheduled to run through until October 17.

Bridge plan timing ‘not the best’

Local MP Jo Luxton admits her Government’s timing announcement of a controversial $785 million cycling and walking bridge in Auckland was “not the best”.

Transport Minister Michael Wood unveiled plans for a cycling and pedestrian bridge, alongside the Auckland Harbour Bridge, last Friday.

With the Ashburton district still reeling from the devastating floods, and widespread criticism about the lack of action around the town’s ongoing bridge problem, the Auckland announcement did not go down well locally.

Luxton yesterday admitted the announcement timing was ill-timed.

“It didn’t come at the best time for us,” Luxton said, as part of her response to fiery comments from opposition MP Nicola Grigg, who slammed the Government’s flood and bridge response as “woeful” and “out of touch”.

“Everyone was feeling quite stressed and emotional, so it didn’t help.”

The flood damage to Ashburton’s State Highway 1 overpass has sparked calls of

the urgent need for the long-planned second urban bridge, with Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown wanting the scheduled project brought forward at least a year.

As part of that process, the Ashburton District Council is expected to unveil the second stage of a New Zealand Transport Agency strategic bridge business case by the end of the month.

The floods, which cut off numerous roads, including portions of State Highway 1, illustrated just how exposed the South Island’s roading network was, Luxton said.

“It certainly has shown our vulnerability here in the south without a doubt.

“The council still has to come up with the completion of its business case.”

Urgent flood relief was also critical for farmers, in particular, and Luxton said that the Government had come to the party. “(But) until we get a really accurate picture of the exact amount of cost and damage, it’s still early days,” she said.

Roading network ‘fragile’ – truck companies

Haulage companies are relieved to be on the move over the Ashburton River again, but some trucking bosses have said the recent flood event has highlighted just how flimsy the network is.

Last week’s Canterbury floods which closed numerous roads throughout the region and cut off portions of State Highway 1, including the Ashburton Bridge, presented many logistical headaches for many transport firms.

Wareing Group Limited spokesman Mark Wareing said it had been a frustrating period for all parties involved.

“It certainly has put our livestock teams under huge pressure,” he said.

“Obviously this has proven once again the fragile nature of the South Island roading network and more importantly, how critical transport is in the agricultural sector.”

Trucking companies have said that they are relieved to be travelling over the Ashburton River bridge again.

“Undoubtedly there was many times our drivers couldn’t avoid the queues on the top bridge,” Wareing said.

The flood event and subsequent damage to the Ashburton Bridge has also triggered calls for urgency around planning for a

second highway bridge over the Ashburton River.

Ryal Bush Transport Ashburton owner Chad Stewart said the event highlighted that the roading network was not up to par.

“That Ashburton Bridge is definitely a lifeline,” he said.

travelling times swelled significantly.

“Around June 1 is usually our busiest few days,” he said.

“With that bridge being out, jobs which normally would take half an hour were taking a couple of hours.”

However both owners acknowledged that their problems were nothing compared to what

is being faced by farmers.

“Our team were very aware of the stress the farmers were under and most farmers were appreciative that we were trying to do the best in the circumstances,” Wareing said.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) relinquished restrictions on freight vehicles with trucks, up to 50MAX and HPMV models, now having round-theclock access to the bridge.

The bridge was temporarily closed last week for testing and repairs after it slumped 13 centimetres due to a damaged pier.

“This is good news for truck drivers who have had much longer than normal routes around Ashburton for the past week after 7pm and before 7am since the drop in one bridge pier became visible after the recent floods,” NZTA system manager Pete Connors said.

Overweight permit vehicles are still unable to use the bridge.

Shirt sales to aid flood-hit farmers

It’s a message Robbie ‘Gooserooter’ Shefford stands by and

to help rally support for Canterbury’s flood-hit farmers he has had it emblazoned on tee-shirts.

It is one of three designs Shefford has produced with the help of Geraldine’s SignSpot Graphics to raise funds for the Rural Support Trust Mid Canterbury.

Shefford got a call from

SignSpot Graphics owner Saskia Ostermeier who had mocked up some designs to reflect the 1-ina-100 year flood and asked if he would help with the campaign.

Shefford, a former dairy farmer in the region, had witnessed the devastation of the flooding first- hand and said that the

farmers are going through a tough time following the recent flooding and this was one way people could help with the relief efforts.

The specially designed teeshirts – in either black, white, or navy and in a wide range of sizes, are for sale for $50, of which $30

will go directly to the trust.

Hoodies are also available.

“The orders have already been coming in steadily,” Shefford said.

The products, which began being printed in bulk on Friday, can be ordered online through signspotgraphics.com

Elders too ashamed to report abuse

Too many incidents of elder abuse aren’t being reported.

Age Concern’s senior clinical social worker, Annie Hunt, says most family violence isn’t reported because the victim carries too much shame.

While Ashburton still has the image of a rural town where people know and help each other, she’s aware of older people not getting the support they require.

Next Tuesday is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) and Hunt said it’s an important opportunity to acknowledge the role played by the community in putting an end to elder abuse.

Hunt is establishing a display area

in the Ashburton Arcade next week and will be available to talk.

She said while many people associate elder abuse with violent actions, there are many examples of abuse.

They include psychological, financial, physical, sexual and institutional abuse.

Other examples could be neglect, where a person’s physical, emotional or social needs aren’t being being met, their exposure to scamming or intimidation sales, based on fear, confusion or vulnerability or loneliness.

WEAAD is intended to make visible the concerns that are in the community and to promote available support systems.

Hunt said people can offer emotional support, monitor risky situations, be the eyes and ears of an older

person and work with them to ensure they’re safe.

“Often the most powerful thing can be a trusting relationship that people feel is secure and protective,” she said.

The Minister for Seniors, Dr Ayesha Verrall, said “it can be hard for those experiencing elder abuse to speak out as often the one committing the abuse is someone they trust and rely on.”

“That’s why we all need to speak out against it.

“Support is available. The Elder Abuse Response Service includes a free 24-hour confidential helpline which anyone can call,” Verrall said.

Young voices set to soar

Fifteen schools from around Mid Canterbury are putting the final preparations to raise the roof of the Ashburton Trust Event Centre next week.

The Heartland Music Festival is a three-night event to showcase Mid Canterbury’s school choirs.

Twenty-nine pupils from St Joseph’s School are participating in the festival and the pupils are excited to get up on the stage and show off their hard work, getting their turn on Wednesday night.

St Joseph’s and the other schools have been working hard and dedicated months of choir practices for the big annual event.

Over the three evenings, starting at 7.30pm, the stage will be packed with students representing their respective schools and is a showcase of talent and hard work.

On Tuesday night there will be performances from Wakanui, Mayfield, Tinwald, and Ashburton Borough schools as well as Intermediate A. Then on Wednesday Hampstead, Mt Somers Springburn, Dorie, St Joseph’s and Rakaia schools have their turns.

Netherby, Allenton, Hinds, Lauriston, and Intermediate B perform on the third and final night.

Across the three nights they are supported by a representative choir and guest performers from the local secondary schools.

Denesa Chan – a woman of many talents A month of swimming and filming humpback whales has resulted in international recognition for an Ashburton woman.

Denesa Chan’s role as a cinematographer for a German movie company filming passing pods of whales off the coast of Tonga has picked up key awards in a film festival Arizona.

The documentary, Ama’ara: The Song Of The Whales, won the director’s choice title at the Eliminate Film Festival and it’s also reached the semi-finals of the Gold Movie Awards in London.

Chan said she was “delighted and honoured” that her filming has contributed to the success of the movie.

For a month Chan, accompanist by a marine biologist, swam with the whales and filmed their behaviour and communication.

whale body language and spent hours and hours in the water swimming parallel to them.

Mostly I was three to four metres away but, on one occasion, a female flicked its massive tail only millimetres away from me,” she said.

“It made a gesture like come on, follow me.”

Chan said the whales were “as big as a bus’’ and they would swim around her.

“They were intrigued. Every time I changed my body position, one of them would imitate.

She was doing a dance with me.”

Walking tracks ‘severely damaged’

The Mount Somers Walkways Society and the Department of Conservation (DOC) have a lot of work ahead of them after the recent flooding.

The walkways society are a group of volunteers that support DOC to maintain the tracks around the area.

The popular track in the area from Sharplin Falls near Staveley to the Woolshed Creek car park near Mount Somers is “severely damaged”, walkways society chairperson Charles Ross said.

On Wednesday, DOC workers started assessing as many areas for damage as possible and worked alongside the walkways society to repair some areas of the track.

“All tracks in the Mount Somers area have suffered damage from the heavy rainfall and flooding, which was not surprising as the Mount Somers rain gauge registered 540mm over the heavy rainfall event,” DOC’s Geraldine operations manager Duncan Toogood said.

He said the track to Pinnacles Hut had several slips and sections of washouts on it, as well as damage to the Bowyers Stream swing bridge.

DOC, with the help of the walkways society, started repair work on the track from the Sharplin Falls car park to Pinnacles Hut on Wednesday, which they hope to have completed as soon as possible and the track reopened within the next two weeks, Toogood said.

“Both the Pinnacles Hut and Acland Shelter are okay following the storm.

“The Woolshed Creek Hut has had a large slip come down the slope behind the it and until this material is cleared away, we cannot make a full damage assessment,” Toogood said.

Toogood said that for people’s safety, all tracks, and huts in the Mount Somers area remained closed for the time being.

“We will get them reopened to the public as soon as we can do so safely,” he said.

Illegal rubbish dumpers each fined $400 Three people have been fined a total of $1200 for illegal dumping, after Ashburton District Council officers tracked down the offenders.

In each case, a council compliance officer was able to sift through the rubbish and find items that identified the offender.

In one of the cases, seven bags of household rubbish and food waste were left at the Fairton recycling depot.

The others involved a bag of rubbish left on Allens Road in Ashburton and household rubbish, including a lounge chair, was left at the end of Smyths Road

in the Ashburton River bed.

Each offender was fined $400.

The council is also investigating two other cases where household and garden rubbish in black refuse bags were dumped at Fountaines Road, and under the Ashburton River bridge.

While the council prefers to work with and educate offenders rather than hand out enforcement notices under the Litter Act (1979), the penalty fine is intended to discourage the behaviour.

Members of the public are encouraged to report illegally dumped rubbish to the council on 307 7700.

Do we have enough vaccine?

The Pfizer vaccine has been thoroughly assessed for safety by our own Medsafe experts.

Yes. Pfizer, our vaccine supplier, has confirmed New Zealand will receive 1 million doses of the vaccine in July. That means we can keep going with our plan.

Medsafe is New Zealand’s medicines safety authority. Medsafe only grants consent for a vaccine to be used in Aotearoa New Zealand once they’re satisfied it has met strict standards for safety, efficacy and quality. This is the same process used to assess other medicines, like the flu vaccine. There have been no shortcuts taken in granting approval for the Pfizer vaccine.

It’s already been used successfully all around the world by millions of people, and by hundreds of thousands here in New Zealand.

The vaccine continues to be monitored closely for safety.

How effective is the vaccine, and what does 95% mean?

However, delivery is weighted to the end of July so our stocks will be tight until then. We are carefully managing our way through this.

We continue to focus our efforts on Group 1 (border workers), Group 2 (people at high risk) and Group 3 (people over 65).

The rate of new bookings will remain steady until the end of July when we will scale up and begin vaccinating everyone else in New Zealand aged 16 and over.

Even with tight supply, we will deliver more than half a million doses of the vaccine over the next five weeks. By comparison, it took us three months to deliver the first 500,000 doses.

Group 3 update We know some people in Group 3 (people over the age of 65, pregnant people and people with disabilities and some health conditions) are anxious as to when they will receive their vaccination.

District health boards (DHBs) will ensure people in this group are vaccinated or receive a vaccination invitation by the end of July.

‘Warm’ welcome for artist

What Koryu Aoshima lacked in a warm welcome from the weather, Ashburton residents have more than made up for.

The weather might have delayed Aoshima starting the mural in the Ashburton CBD, but he is now back on schedule.

Aoshima is delighted by the number of people that are stopping to watch him work and to talk to him.

“It’s been really great to chat with people, to make sure people understand what is going on, and to see how they are reading things,” he said.

“A lot of people have come up to me, I like it.”

With a steady stream of foot traffic proving plenty of interested people approaching him about his work, he said it has already been a great experience, especially at the early stage it is at.

After a week of progress, all the mapping out of the mural is complete.

At the beginning of the week at the mural site there was just various blue shapes on the white walls.

Aoshima said those blue shapes are his mapping technique and it’s the way he can ensure everything will fit into the space.

Included in the curious onlookers have been some Ashburton District Council members who had popped down to have a look at the mural space, taking a great interest, Aoshima said.

Due to the time of year, Aoshima said that the wall only receives two hours of sunshine a day.

So far this week the weather has been mild, with no strong winds, Aoshima said, making him more comfortable being up high on the scissor lift.

“I do prefer sunshine as it’s nicer to take pictures and it helps it (the paint) dry faster,” he said.

Aoshima encourages people to keep popping past to see the progress and doesn’t mind if the quick chats continue as well.

Heavy rainfall refills groundwater levels Following months of dry conditions, the water table across Canterbury has already responded to the rainfall, Environment Canterbury says.

In late May, many wells were well below average levels for this time of the year, and in areas like West Melton, some were at record lows.

In some places, the water table has risen by less than a metre, while in others, more than two metres – such as one monitored well near Yaldhurst that has risen by five metres.

Environment Canterbury groundwater science manager, Carl Hanson, said that while much of the rainfall rushed through the river systems out to sea, he expects that most of the rain that fell on the plains soaked into the dry ground.

“Out in the middle of the Canterbury Plains, far from any water courses, there’s really nowhere else for the rain to go,” Hanson said.

However, Hanson added that one large rainfall event does not make up for months of dry conditions that much of Canterbury has experienced.

“Groundwater levels have certainly risen in response to this rain, but they’re still not as high as they have been after past wet winters.”

Emergency Relief Fund announced for Mid Canterbury residents People and families in Mid Canterbury experiencing financial hardship as a result of the recent flood events can now apply for funds to help with essential costs.

Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown has finalised the criteria for the Emergency Relief Fund which began accepting applications on Tuesday, 8 June. The fund is designed to assist with essential costs of daily life not covered by insurance or other funds where an immediate need exists.

incredible and the relief fund provides a further avenue of support for those in need, Mayor Brown said.

“The eligibility to apply is reasonably wide in the hopes those in real need are not in any way inhibited from gaining the support they need.

“In the meantime, if there is an immediate financial need not covered by insurance or other forms of assistance, people are advised to apply as soon as they are able," he added.

Welcoming Mural Artist Begins Painting Prolific mural artist Koryu Aoshima of Geraldine has last week begun painting his colourful Welcoming Mural in the town centre.

Carparks nearest the mural wall will be cordoned off while the Cass Street entrance nearest Armadillo's restaurant will be limited to outwards traffic only.

Users of the carpark will need to use the vehicle crossing at the rear of Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ) building to exit on to Cass Street.

Nearby carparks in Eastfield opposite the MSA on Burnett Street have recently become available.

The mural concept was chosen by residents in a public vote, which followed a public submissions process on deciding a theme. A Welcoming Mural panel oversaw the process.

Koryu has worked with the Welcoming Mural panel and property owner to take into account public feedback which arose as a result of the voting process, allowing the size of the mural to be extended across the whole wall.

Visitors are welcome to view the artist working and are advised to stay outside of the safety cordons. A time lapse camera will also be in place to film the mural come to life over this time.

The rise and fall of Barrhill

John Cathcart Wason during his two-year stint as an Ashburton County Councillor.

W

hat remains of the quaint model village of Barrhill is undeniably unique, the few original buildings standing as a reminder of what was once a thriving settlement, and a dream-come-true.

Barrhill was laid out in the 1870s by John Cathcart Wason, owner of the Corwar Estate, to accommodate his workers and their families.

Designed to serve a small yet prosperous community, Barrhill enjoyed a period of stability before declining after Wason sold up in 1900.

As quickly as Barrhill rose from nothing, the settlement’s population shrank and Wason’s dream died out, and the closure of the school in 1938 was the final nail in the coffin.

The birth of Barrhill John Wason, who was described as a “massive” man of six foot six inches, took up 20,000 acres by the Rakaia and renamed the run to Corwar, previously known as Lendon.

The name Corwar came from his previous home in Ayrshire, Scotland.

After managing to transform the run from a tussock-ridden wasteland into arable land, he made a large portion of it freehold and eventually the whole of Corwar was purchased by 1878.

Wason was a keen planter, and his passion for trees led him to develop vast plantations that were visible across the Rakaia for miles as early as 1885.

He built a homestead of 20 rooms, surrounded by rare trees and complete with modern outbuildings, a lodge and gatekeeper.

Wason was becoming more successful by the minute, yet he was seemingly unsatisfied with his progress.

A belief he brought from Scotland was that all farmworkers should own their own homes, and so he envisioned a dedicated village to serve Corwar and house its staff – this was to be Barrhill.

Perfect by design Barrhill was meticulously designed not only to serve a practical purpose, but also to reflect certain sentimentalities and beliefs held by Wason.

The plan for Barrhill was drawn up by Charles F Barker, and is dated March 24, 1877.

There were 28 sections for sale,

Church of St John the Evangelist at Barrhill. and four large sections bordering the central square were set aside for the church, vicarage, and school.

Spirituality lies at the heart of the village, as evidenced by the nearly 145-year-old church of St John the Evangelist that still stands right in the middle of the settlement.

Trees featured heavily in Barrhill’s design, which is known to this day for its tree-lined avenues.

Birches were planted along the east avenue, oaks on the west, and the market square was planted with elms and oaks.

It took until 1975 for the full extent of Wason’s planning to be noticed – it was in that year that Bill Irwin took an aerial photograph of Barrhill which showed the trees forming three circles which are assumed to represent the Holy Trinity with the church at the middle.

Regardless of whatever angle you view it from, it is clear that the village of Barrhill was crafted

by Wason with keen attention to detail and strong purpose.

On top of this, the railway from Rakaia to Methven bypassed Barrhill in favour of Lauriston, which took a further toll on the area.

Remnants, not ruins

The rise and fall The first house plot was bought on December 5, 1877

by George Rimer, hotelkeeper, making the hotel one of the first structures in the village.

The Barrhill school opened its doors on June 7, 1878, with 23 pupils on the first roll.

Barrhill prospered from the outset, as sections were filled up by, predictably, labourers, farmers and various workers and their families.

The village settlers were not all just farm workers – there was Auguste Joen the blacksmith on Lot 6, James Bishop the baker on Lot 8, and Christopher Hammond the gardener on Lot 28, to give a few examples.

Before the freezing works came about, Barrhill was even home to a mutton boiling-down works which processed up to 100 sheep a day.

Prices for sections varied, presumably due to locations and when the sections were bought; however it is still hard to justify why William Radford paid £125 for Lot 13 in 1878, whereas John

Spring paid just £5 for Lot 24 in 1901.

This may be to do with the fact that villagers were leaving as early as 1886, due to the depression and the gradual sale of Corwar.

The school eventually closed, consolidating with Lauriston 10 kilometres away in 1938, and the Barrhill area gradually reverted to farmland with just a few houses remaining, alongside the church, the old school building and some other lasting features of a failed dream.

The gatekeeper’s lodge at the entrance to Corwar, which is now a fascinating small museum, is another good example of Wason’s distinctive style and is furnished to appear as if it is frozen in time.

Barrhill is also home to a historic cemetery, squashed tightly between two paddocks on a long, thin, grassy section.

The few graves that adorn the far end of the cemetery are a reminder of what once was, and the fact that so much of the section is empty, unfinished, and unassuming, speaks for itself.

Woods is a singing contractor who’s contracted to sing

T

here’ll be very few contractors in Methven who have a degree in music.

Chris Woods is one of those who enjoys both professions equally.

Auckland is the throbbing heart of our music scene and, very few people who’ve made their mark, want to leave it.

Chris spent seven years studying and performing there and, while he enjoyed his time, was keen to return home.

“I found it more difficult adjusting to Auckland than adjusting back to Methven,” he said.

His seven years in Auckland punctuated a life growing up in rural Mid Canterbury and then returning, initially to farming and then establishing two businesses, contracting and harvesting, the latter with his friend, Millan Bungard.

Now Chris divides his time, but always musical theatre remains close to his performing heart.

While he played guitar from a young age, singing only developed while he attended Mount Hutt College.

“I joined the college choir to do something else besides sport but then Head of Music, Fern McKay, could hear my voice above everyone else,” he said.

McKay took him aside, gave him guidance and put him in the next school production.

A love affair with musical theatre, lasting more than 20 years, began.

He had a small role as the undertaker’s assistant in Methven Theatre’s Oliver and then shone with another cameo in My Fair Lady for Ashburton Operatic.

“I wanted to experience shows. I did it for the hell of it,” Chris said.

But the smell of the greasepaint also extended to his studies and Chris chose music as a School Certificate subject, leaving college in 2003 for an apprenticeship at Claas Harvest Centre in Tinwald.

He continued showcasing his voice in theatre productions but his ability to play guitar never left him.

He established a five piece, then a four-piece, band called Tax Machine which performed at the Nor’Wester Music Club and around the circuit.

Chris was keen to take pop music as far as it would go and, through a Hello Sailor contact, he rocked all the way to Auckland.

“Come and have a look” he was told, and Chris liked what he saw.

He packed his bag and enrolled at the New Zealand Music and Audio Institute in Auckland and studied for a Diploma in Contemporary Music Performance.

“The tutors were artists in their own right, they encouraged me and gave me confidence,” he said.

Chris showed more than average talent and was chosen as the best overall student in his final two years.

“I formed a melodic heavy metal band called Ethanol 58. We recorded an EP and played venues around Auckland.”

About that time, Chris realised he had another string to his guitar.

In becoming so immersed in the music industry, he learned the art of promotion.

His next academic challenge was to study for a Bachelor of Music at Auckland University and, while there, he organised his band’s nationwide tour.

“It was an interesting project. We played the North Island, then toured the South Island performing in Queenstown, Dunedin and Christchurch,” he said.

His favourite venue was returning to the Blue Pub in Methven.

Heavy metal means different things to Methven’s Chris Woods. It’s what he drives, what he loads and what he sings. As band leader, he sang heavy metal on a national tour, but has now returned and is serenading local audiences from the Ashburton and Methven stages.

Methven’s Chris Woods is equally at home driving heavy contracting machinery as he is singing and making music.

“It was the best gig we had.”

During that time Chris learned the disciplines of touring, living with other people and looking after himself.

“I learned to respect other people’s space and not exist on energy drinks.”

He was pleased the band “broke even” on the tour, but realised it was tough making a living as a touring musician.

New Zealand has a small population and trends on radio kept changing. It was a challenge keeping up with them.

After seven years away, Chris came back to Methven, working on a farm and harvesting.

He enjoyed a brief OE in Ireland, dabbling in farm work and “taking a break.”

His life on a large arable, cropping farm out of Methven gave him the desire to work for himself. It was time to run his own business.

Chris knew contracting and he knew harvesting and had the knack of succeeding with what he wanted to do.

“My business took over and my priority was to build it up,” he said.

There was little time for his other passion but gradually he organised his life to return to the stage.

“Ashburton had a new theatre and that was an incentive,” he said.

Chris started back in Miss Saigon and developed to play leading roles in Grease, The Addams Family, Mamma Mia and Sister Act. “The shows gave me the chance to stretch my voice, expand my repertoire and once again feel the adrenalin rush of

a production,” Chris said.

Today he’s auditioning for Variety Theatre’s Jesus Christ Superstar.

But his performing life isn’t limited to Ashburton.

He’s active in the Methven Theatre Company and has played just about every role from performer, director, committee member and president to leads in pantomimes.

“Methven people like pantos and seeing their mates on stage.”

He also wants to nurture his own

group called Cabarnet, which is inspired by a particular wine variety.

It’s a group of six guys who want to sing popular classics from Elton John to Ed Sheeran, either a capella or with backing tracks.

Then there’s the lure of Showbiz Canterbury in Christchurch. But after experiencing the best that Auckland can offer, Chris isn’t going to stray far from Ashburton district and his contracting and harvesting businesses.

“I’m a country boy at heart,” he said.

Talented Denesa film festiv A few years ago two American women slipped into New Zealand at different times, looking for a campervan to hire so they could explore the South Island. One was Meghan Markle, actor, model and future duchess.

The other was Denesa Chan, actor, model, dancer and photographer. They both found their vehicle.

But one found something else, Ashburton, a partner and a home to continue her international career.

enesa Chan has photographed endangered sea turtles, swum with sharks and humpback whales and met the world’s rarest penguin.

She’s acted with Chris Pine (Wonder Woman), been directed by Academy Award-winner, Tom Woodruff Jr, sings vocals with a San Francisco based musician and last month duetted Elton John’s Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me for Variety Theatre Ashburton.

She’s also been held at gunpoint when she was an international observer in an armed conflict in Mexico.

Denesa’s life has had many chapters, but her nomadic travels have ended with a pause – more a semi-colon – in Ashburton. However, that doesn’t mean her creative journey has ended, just that Ashburton is an oasis for her and the quality of life she enjoys here.

As an award-winning nature photographer, she arrived in Christchurch on her way south and looked on Trade Me to buy a van.

She found one in Ashburton, was attracted to it but, even more so, to the owner.

Denesa and Gavin became partners and she’s been based here for the past four years.

Denesa’s dad is from Hong Kong and her mother is a Swedish American. She grew up in gang territory, an economically depressed area of east Los Angeles. “I saw a lot of violence around me,” she recalls.

It’s because of that, her life has been devoted to preserving peace and protecting the ecosystem.

Creativity was in her DNA from the time she was born. “I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to perform,” she says.

She attended LA County High School for the Arts and trained for several months at the Lee Strasberg Institute in New York.

When she graduated with her high school diploma, she joined a performing ensemble which presented a unique form of Japanese experimental physical theatre, drawing on martial arts and Butoh, a highly stylised form of dance.

The ensemble, comprising six actors, toured north-eastern America including New York, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Massachusetts. But higher education brought her home and she entered UCLA’s St Barbara campus.

She double majored in environmental science and dance, taking the opportunity to travel to Ghana

in Africa where she studied Ghanian dance and drumming. Denesa loved the country. “Ghana opened my heart in ways that were life changing,” she said. “The culture was welcoming and I experienced a wide range of emotions.”

In one of her summer breaks, her mission took her to central Africa where she helped street urchins and, on another, she became a neutral, international observer in Mexico. “We were sent in pairs to a small village in the jungle to observe any violations of the peace accord,” she says.

On the way, their bus was stopped by militants who threatened and physically harassed them. Denesa knew that, if they were ordered out of the bus, they’d be killed. She feigned sleep and, when an AK47 was thrust into her back, she talked to the leader in faltering Spanish.

That was enough and eventually they were released.

“We saw breaches of the accord, were told to be as unobtrusive as possible and

Life was meaningful and exiting and, when Denesa graduated, her foot stayed on the pedal. She toured with a contemporary dance company which included some Pink-like aerial movement in a harness.

The company toured India where they performed in nine venues, enjoyed a brief residency, then on to Europe and the United States. Denesa taught as well as performed.

“I learned that, although we may speak different languages and eat different foods, we breathe the same air and are connected in ways that are all beautiful and a cause for celebration,” she commented.

Hollywood beckoned and, for five years, she earned a living as a TV and movie actress playing supporting roles in movies such as Stretch and The Pandora Experiment. But

wins international val award alongside the glamour, the industry was tough.

“Everything was superficial and there were sexual predators out there. The environment wasn’t safe.”

The sort of behaviour that Harvey Weinstein reputedly got up to was replicated many times in Hollywood.

Eventually Denesa said enough.

Her life was the environment and performance, so why not capture it? Her dad had been a keen photographer, why not her? It led to her becoming a nature photographer and film-maker.

Her previous talent, life experiences and eye for detail came together and her inquiring mind and search for nature’s beauty took her around the world.

She travelled to Iceland to photograph the aurora borealis and to Hawaii to record the rain forest and active volcano. She was awarded a residency in the Gulf of Mexico where she photographed coral reefs, dolphins, endangered sea turtles and swam with and snapped sharks before they snapped her.

The year, 2019 saw her in Tonga where she was the whale cinematographer for a documentary/fairy tale entitled Ama’ara: The Song of the Whales. She swam and filmed humpback whales in the wild. “Up to eight whales at a time surrounded me on all sides,” she said.

The film premiered at the Illuminate Film Festival in Sedona, Arizona, last month where it received the coveted Director’s Choice Award and is currently nominated for two awards at the Gold Movie Awards in London.

Eventually Denesa came to New Zealand to continue her wildlife photography. From Ashburton she’s photographed the world’s rarest penguin, the yellow-eyed penguin and our rarest sea lion, which inhabit the Southland coastline.

While there she’s photographed the southern lights, the Aurora Australis, and travelled to the West Coast to experience and record ice caves at Fox Glacier and other glaciers.

In her spare moments she’s a visual and branding consultant for overseas clients, working from Ashburton, and is keen to extend her work locally.

A small but important breakthrough came last month when she received her residency to work in New Zealand.

However, Denesa hasn’t turned her back or her vocal folds on performance. She’s a vocalist with Falling You, a musical collaboration she

has with John Michael Zorko in San Francisco.

“I’m a vocalist and songwriter who records with him and other artists,” she says. “I record the main melody and lyrics at home in Ashburton and he adds the instrumentals. Our last album was called Shine. It’s a blend of rock, pop and ambient, a form of music which is mysterious or ethereal.”

Denesa is also a dancer in a Christchurch troupe called Valency, a multi-sensorial performance ensemble which does contact improvisation.

There’s also something multi-sensory about her stage performances in Ashburton. Deneca performed in the Methven Theatre Company’s Four Musketeers last November and was an impressive singer/dancer/ actor in It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll, Baby for Variety Theatre Ashburton last month. It had visual, auditory and tactile touches about it.

Dance, theatre, video and photography are international which you can do anywhere in the world.

Denesa has chosen Ashburton.

“I always felt at odds in LA, but there’s something very genuine and grounded about being here,” she said.

hen you’re 48, living a busy fulfilling life, you don’t have time to get sick.

That’s what Tiffany Paulsen-Burst thought.

Yes, she might have lost a little weight,

might have been feeling tired, but both could be put down to working too hard, too many hours.

She’d also noticed a little blood in her faeces, but she had been taking antibiotics for an unrelated condition and using Dr Google, she discovered that could be a side-effect of those antibiotics.

“I read that and thought, yes that all fits together and just carried on,” Tiffany said.

The symptoms persisted and in April 2019 she decided a doctor’s visit might be in order. Those symptoms rang alarm bells with her doctor and she found herself with an appointment with the colorectal team at Christchurch Hospital.

Knowing she was living a healthy lifestyle, Tiffany admits she wasn’t too concerned. Her first thought was she had polyps or an irritable bowel. Bowel cancer was far

Her appointment came within four weeks and even when she was told the specialist was unable to complete the procedure because of a blockage, she was unconcerned.

“Maybe that’s because I was still sedated, but even when they called Graeme (her husband) back I wasn’t too concerned.”

The specialist spelled out the findings – Tiffany had either a tumour, a blockage, or cancer. And a section of her bowel would need to be removed.

From that point things moved quickly.

Her operation was scheduled within three weeks.

“In that time I lost 4kg. I couldn’t eat because they didn’t want a blockage so I was put on a liquid diet,” she said.

The surgery came with some unknowns and one of those was would she need a colostomy bag? And it came with a surprise, five benign cysts on an ovary. All were removed.

“I was rapt – no bag. That was such a relief. And the surgeon said to the naked eye the tumour looked to be contained inside the bowel. He said ‘it’s looking good. You won’t need further treatment and there’s now an 80 per cent chance you’ll be as good as gold’.”

Tiffany’s celebration of her brush with bowel cancer was shortlived.

Four weeks later her histology results came back telling a different story. Cancer was in her bowel wall and while her lymph nodes looked healthy, there was a possibility there were now cancer cells in her blood stream.

“He recommended I undergo six months of chemo. He told me it was like an insurance policy, it may or may not work.”

She opted to enter the chemo programme but the toll on her body was huge.

“It was heinous, absolutely horrible.

Every Wednesday at Ashburton Hospital, but It supposedly took my chances of being cured to 85 to 90 per cent.”

She finished treatment at the end of 2019 and was ready to start getting her life

back on track “I was thinking about getting back to work. I had a new job at Allenton Fresh.

My contract was signed at the same time as I went up for my surveillance CT. And they found a tumour in my liver.”

In most workplaces that would have signalled the end of her new job, but Tiffany said her new boss, Mark Swaney, went above and beyond. He already knew her medical history and was prepared to hold her job until she was ready to start.

More tests and scans were to follow and the liver growth appeared to be the only one active in Tiffany’s body. But it did mean another operation and a significant change in her cancer diagnosis.

“I had a liver resection and the odds are now the opposite. It’s in my blood, stage four and the chances of it being one rogue cell that wasn’t zapped are low. It’s now 80 to 90 per cent it’ll come back,” she said.

Undeterred, Tiffany is working five days a week and maintaining a positive attitude to life.

“I do feel like I’ve been fighting to recover for the last two years and I feel as though I have an axe hanging over my head, but I’m a really positive person and I love my job and the people I work with and the customers.” continued over page

From P19 Along the way Tiffany said she’s had a huge support team with her three children and her sister and, most of all, husband Graeme (Stretch). And then there are the people in her home community, Hakatere.

When she was having chemo, a neighbour let herself into her house to do housework, others offered to drive her to appointments and a local nurse helped out with injections.

“This is such a great place to live.”

While she’s presenting a positive face to the world, Tiffany said she’s shed, and continues to shed, many tears.

“The fact that my children could also be affected really gets to me. The kids need to be tested when they’re 10 years younger than I was at diagnosis and I’ve told them if they have any symptoms they must go to the doctor.”

Because bowel cancer is often slow growing and often shows no early symptoms, Tiffany said hers could have been growing for years.

“And you ask what you did wrong to get

this,” she said.

She knows her only certainty is that she’s unlikely to make 80, but said she’s getting on with life as best she can.

“What other choice do I have? You have to make the best of what you have. I lost a really good friend who had two young children, so I have to count myself lucky, I’ve watched mine grow up.”

One of the biggest struggles on her cancer journey has been the financial impact from her inability to work for long stretches. Drop one income and that puts pressure on the mortgage, she said.

“But I have been lucky. All of my treatment has been quick, efficient and funded, but because my husband was earning good money I wasn’t eligible for any financial assistance. Even the Cancer Society who’ve been wonderful, are limited in the assistance they can give.”

It seems wrong that a person who works can get around 80 per cent of their wages when they’re on ACC, but when you get cancer and that stops you working, there’s nothing available in the way of support,

Tiffany said.

“But in saying that, I’m so thankful for my care. It’s been speedy and it’s been amazing. I feel incredibly thankful.”

Tiffany said as much as she’s being positive, she’s also realistic.

“Not a day goes by that I don’t think about it, but it doesn’t get into my head.

I’ve seen myself dying at home. I have a plan.”

And part of that plan was that on her 50th birthday, Graeme and Tiffany renewed their wedding vows in a ceremony that was a total contrast to their first quiet wedding. This time they invited large numbers of friends and family. And Tiffany wore the wedding dress she’d always wanted.

“It was like a living funeral. Maybe my last opportunity to have a big get-together and see all the people I love and care about. I’m trying to do everything I can to give good memories to the people I care about.”

And there’s always the chance that Tiffany will be among the lucky 10 or 15 per

cent who beats the odds. She has regular checks and currently there’s no sign of the disease.

“But I accept that potentially it’s floating around in my blood stream looking for somewhere to settle. It’s like a ticking time bomb and psychologically that’s tougher than all the surgery and that horrendous chemo.”

It would be easy to stop work, sit back and become resigned to whatever fate has in store, but that’s not her style, Tiffany said.

“I’ve already been through a lot of trauma in my life and that’s made it easier to deal with this. I’ve developed coping mechanisms. I’ve done a heap of crying and I still cry, but I’m at peace,” she said.

Tiffany has made it her mission now to raise awareness about the importance of early detection, of not ignoring what might seem quite benign symptoms until it’s too late.

“The key thing is if you have any changes in your bowel habits for two or three weeks go to your doctor,” she said.

Disease is no respecter of age

B

owel cancer, also known as colorectoral or colon cancer, is the second highest cause of cancer death in New Zealand.

It kills more people than breast and prostate cancer combined and New Zealand has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world It can affect anyone at any age, but it is dectectable and beatable if it is detected early. The statistics, however, are grim. Over 3000 people in New Zealand are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year and more than 350 of those are aged under 50. It is a disease that is no respecter of age.

Early signs of bowel cancer Often there are no or non-specific symptoms in the early stages and that means many bowel cancers are diagnosed when they are at a more advanced stage.

However, there are some symptoms that should not be ignored, even if they appear minor or similar to a symptom for another disease. These include: • Blood in a stool or on toilet paper • An unexplained weight loss • A lump in the abdomen • Pain, cramps or swelling in the middle of the abdomen • Anaemia (low red blood cell count) • Nausea or vomiting Having any of these symptoms does not mean you have bowel cancer but it does mean you should consult your GP.

If you are eligible to take part, you will be sent: • An invitation letter • A consent form • A free bowel screening test kit, with instructions on how to use it.

A staged roll-out across New Zealand’s district health boards is under way with Canterbury’s starting in October last year.

This staged approach is designed to enable district health boards (DHBs) to prepare for the extra investigations and treatments that flow from a screening programme. It’s also to ensure that treatment for patients with symptoms is not held up because of the extra demands from screening.

The nationwide roll out expected to be completed by December 2021.

Make your own tempura FROM JAPAN with Miya Komatsu

T

empura is a very popular Japanese dish of usually seafood and vegetables, deep fried and covered with crispy batter.

At restaurants, they use a big deep frying pot, but I usually use a frypan and shallow fry at home for convenience.

You can use any vegetables that you have got on hand.

Some people may not like kumara, pumpkin or other vegetables traditionally cooked like my husband, but with tempura it might be different.

If you don’t eat seafood, you could try chicken or pork instead.

Miya Komatsu is a Japanese-trained chef and nutritionist who has made Ashburton her home.

She has been living here for over 14 years.

Tempura

2 servings 4 prawns (bigger size is better), peel the shell but leave the tail 4 slices kumara, sliced 5mm thick 1/2 red capsicum, sliced lengthwise into 25mm 1/4 eggplant, cut into quarters, then slice each quarter like a fan 2 broccoli florets, cut in half Tempura batter 1C flour + 1/2 t baking powder, mix together then keep in fridge 1 egg, mix with cold water to make 1C, then keep in fridge. Keep batter ingredients cold for lighter and crispier tempura.

Extra flour for dusting

Tentsuyu (dipping sauce) 1/2C Water 1/2t Dashi powder 1T Soy sauce 1T Mirin – In a saucepan, put all the tentsuyu ingredients and boil on high heat for 1 minute. Pour the sauce into 2 small bowls. Set aside.

– Prep prawns, score the belly side of prawns and

snap their muscles with fingers. Also, cut off the tip of the prawn tail to avoid the oil spitting while cooking.

Pat the ingredients dry with a paper towel.

Make the tempura batter, mix the flour and the egg mixture in a large bowl. Combine them together briefly (don’t over mix or it will be too gooey).

In a frypan, heat 25mm deep oil over medium heat to 170°C. Dust the ingredients with a little flour.

– Dip each ingredient into the batter, covering completely then put into the oil.

– Cook for a minute or so on each side until the batter turns golden. Don’t cook too many pieces at one time as it will lower the oil’s temperature.

– Remove from the oil and place them on to a plate lined with a paper towel to absorb the excess oil. Serve while piping hot with the Tentsuyu. recipes and photos Miya Komatsu

Kakiage tempura

1/2 onion, thinly sliced 1/4 carrot, julienned Pumpkin, thinly sliced Total 2C sliced vegetables (you can use any kind of vegetables)

Butter 2T flour 2T cornflour 1/4 C cold water

- In a large bowl, place all vegetables and sprinkle 1T flour and mix and coat well.

- Add remaining flour, cornflour and water then combine together. Don’t over mix.

- In a frypan, heat 12mm deep oil over medium heat to 170°C. - Scoop the mixture with a ladle and slide with a spoon into oil gentry.

- Cook the kakiage until golden on both sides.

- Remove from the oil and place them onto a paper towel to absorb the excess oil. Serve while hot.

The recipe for tempura was introduced to Japan

by Portuguese Jesuit missionaries during the 16th century (1549).

Tempura soba 2 servings 2 bunches soba noodles, cook according to packet instructions Leftover tempura, warm in the oven.

Sauce 1C water 2T soy sauce 1T sugar 1/2t dashi powder

– In a saucepan, combine all sauce ingredients and medium heat until sugar and dashi powder dissolved. Set aside.

– Divide the sauce, soba noodles and tempura, serve hot or cold as you like.

Miya’s hint This sauce is good for udon as well.

Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of Japan, reportedly loved it. Some say he died from eating too much tempura. Of course, this is probably an exaggeration.

Molloy Agriculture was founded in 1985 by owner/operators David and Sonia Molloy and has expanded to an experienced team of 25, including seasonal staff, spraying about 120,000 hectares each year. Molloy Agriculture works in close partnership with its customers to guarantee great service, professionalism and reliability.

Gemma had started out as a vet tech but eventually stepped over to agronomy.

“I enjoy the process of putting a seed in the ground and seeing the process right through.“It’s satisfying as you get to see the end result.” Working in the agricultural sector was quite personal, she said, and she enjoys building a rapport with the farmers. “You really get to know them and there isn’t that chauvinistic attitude that some people think there is, it’s the opposite.”

Sonia Molloy said the business started with one truck, with David in the field and her taking care of administration.Six years ago, their eldest daughter Emily, joined the business, with Sonia stepping back from an administrative role. Sonia continues to sit on the board as a director and is still an active participant in the business.

Over its 36 years, the company had evolved into having several divisions, to complete its cycle of advise, supply, apply, comply and recycle, Sonia said. “It has evolved into an end-to-end service that we provide for our clients, from agronomy advice to chemical spray and liquid fertiliser applications and recycling of chemical plastic containers.”

As a consignment store for Ravensdown, Molloy Agriculture can supply and apply Flowfert N and other liquid fertiliser products or deliver in bulk to tanks onfarm. Molloy Agriculture is also the New Zealand agent for the sale of Bateman self-propelled sprayers, as well as servicing and parts.

Office manager Emily Molloy, who joined the company in 2015, ensures the

smooth running of the company’s office administration. She is also responsible for HR tasks such as health and safety and payroll and supporting new staff coming on board, including work visa applications.

Events co-ordinator and office administrator Sarah Robertson runs the company’s events, as well as being responsible for the company’s financials.

Having a presence at the local A&P Shows as well as the South Island Agricultural Field Days provides a good opportunity to highlight the many aspects of the business.

There is a lot of work that goes into organising these events and it is really satisfying when people come onto the

stand and you get feedback about how the company is known for doing a good job and providing high levels of service Sarah said. “Working for Molloy Ag is really rewarding as the company recognises staff members strengths and interests and gives them opportunities to further their experience and training in these areas.”

Chemical manager and agronomist Gemma Oliver is responsible for the efficient running of the company’s extensive chemical stocks and the supply to meet customer demand. “I have to keep my finger on the pulse. “We have 12 trucks on the road, so I’m making sure we have the inventory there for them when they need it,” she said. She is also available for agronomy advice, with

Agronomist Martina Padrutt comes from an extensive background of farming including working for a field trials company in the United Kingdom, harvests in Australia and America and most recently on a cropping farm in Mid Canterbury. “I was employed as a farm hand and got my first taste of arable farming and got hooked.” Martina has been with Molloys for two years and is available to advise farmers on fertiliser programmes, disease management, timing of spray programmes and agricultural chemical recommendations.

“A lot of my crops are potatoes because that’s where my passion lies.”

She said that there is no difference between being a woman or a man, only that “working on a farm you have to prove yourself by doing a good job”.

Molloy Agriculture recognises the value of women in agricultural businesses.

Although they do not have any female applicators presently, they are hopeful that will change in the not too distant future. Watch this space….

New site, new studio for local photographer And that’s the only catch in what she describes as the perfect relocation – a smaller studio space. However that has also created an opportunity that will see Emmily develop a second studio at her home.

Photographer Emmily Harmer is always on the move, and that’s usually when she has a camera in hand.

For the past week, however, she’s been on the move for a different reason – she’s been packing up her studio and moving across town.

Emmily Harmer photography has opened its doors in a new location, in Ashburton’s trendy Victoria Street Triangle precinct.

She might still be settling in but Emmily couldn’t be happier in her new home.

For the past six or seven years her studio was based on West Street, but increasing traffic volumes started her thinking about finding a new home.

“It got to the stage where it just wasn’t a good fit for my business, but the Triangle is.

Justin Skilling (building owner) is being so progressive and I wanted to get in there. It has a great vibe and it’s quite relaxed.”

potential as a precinct with a special arty character, and she believes its time has come.

“It just needed some vision and Justin has that and he’s hoping with my business moving in there it will attract more businesses and give people the confidence to come here,” she said.

Moving a photographic studio is no easy task.

While camera gear can be easily packed, the real challenges come in moving the hundreds of props, dozens of pieces of lighting equipment and furniture that is part of her large West Street studio.

The relocation has been a time of evaluation for Emmily and as part of the move, her framing business has been scaled down for both space and time reasons.

“I’ll keep the design process at the Triangle and I’ll frame from home, but it will be smaller.

That’s part of me pulling back a bit. My business is growing and I need to take control of it rather than it taking control of me,” she said.

The one thing that won’t change with the move to a new premises is the passion she brings to every photo shoot.

Regardless of the scale of the job, it’s always about creating great images and ensuring her customers love her work.

Passion is something she is never short of and happiness for

her is having a camera in hand, capturing images of families, individuals and groups of people simply being themselves.

She’s been fascinated by cameras and images since she was a child and that fascination has endured into adulthood, marriage and motherhood. It wasn’t until after her children were born, however, that she decided to take the step of establishing her own business.

She’s self taught and has invested heavily in time and money to hone her skills from the best, attending workshops in Australia and the United States and she continues to work with an American mentor.

Portraits are her first love and she never tires of watching through her camera lens, the transformation that occurs when people start to relax and have fun. That’s when the best images are captured. When the magic happens.

For her photos are works of art that become family heirlooms to be cherished for generations.

After high school Kirsty started working full time, ‘Trevor Croy offered me an amazing opportunity to basically treat my studies like an apprenticeship program, working full time and studying by correspondence’. Not the traditional approach for accountants but Kirsty doesn’t follow many traditions, ‘I had to be very disciplined to complete my studies, while juggling full time work and netball commitments; when the time was right I decided to flee the nest which turned into a decade of living, working and having a lot of fun abroad’.

She decided it was time to return home and put these skills to the test on her own business. ‘Both my brothers run local businesses and although successful it’s very evident how much hard work they put in; I’m so proud of them both and grateful our parents instilled great values in us.’

The joy of winter planting

he start of winter and a great month for planting new strawberries, fruit trees, berries and roses. Garden centres are overflowing with new season plants – plan carefully and enjoy planting!

Strawberry varieties and planting Select a few different varieties to spread the harvest time. Strawberry plants are classed as either day-neutral or short-day.

Day-neutral varieties (try Aromas and Temptation), will fruit any time of year that temperatures allow. Short-day varieties (try Camarosa or Camino Real), initiate flowers during the short days of spring and autumn, with the main crop coming in early summer and another in autumn.

Some varieties such as Tioga (short-day) are excellent planted in summer – the plants then establish and produce a heavy crop the following summer.

Before planting, incorporate compost into the existing soil, then create mounds 80-100cm above the existing ground level. Plant into these mounds and space plants 15cm apart.

Fruit trees New citrus, pip and stone fruit are now available at garden centres. Select trees that grow best in your particular climate and location. Look for sturdy, healthy-looking trees with a strong stem and no signs of pests or diseases.

Get all rose pruning done before the end of July.

Your fruit tree needs full sun for at least six hours a day for maximum ripening of fruit, and shelter from the wind is essential. Fruit trees only flower once a year and in a windy position, flowers can be blown off the tree which means no fruit! Wind also affects bees accessing flowers for pollination – no bees mean no pollination and fruit set.

Berry fruits Many berry fruit plants are now available including blackberries, blueberries, gooseberry, blackcurrant, raspberries, and red and white currents. Some berry fruit grow better in colder parts of New Zealand so check with your local garden centre for advice.

Roses Two of the most important rose tasks this time of year are pruning and planting. Depending on the weather, pruning should be carried out by the end of July. Remove all inward facing branches and small twiggy growth. Shorten back

Perennials Perennials are plants that survive for at least three years. New plants are now available from garden centres. With existing herbaceous perennials (growth dies down each year but regrows in spring), such as shasta daisies and salvia etc, it is time to divide and replant them.

Trees and shrubs Plant trees and shrubs from now through till August. Plan new plantings carefully! Allow room for new plants to mature, especially with trees. As with any plant, choose healthy and sturdy specimens.

Greedy grass grubs

Deidra O’Shea is this month’s winner with the following question: I have grass grubs and the grass is coming out in clumps when I mow. Is it too late to save it?

In general, lawns are usually relatively free of damaging insects, but when outbreaks do occur, they can be quite devastating.

Root damage and the eventual death of grass in your lawn is the result of an infestation of grass grubs which is the larvae of the bronze beetle.

The grass grub lifecycle starts towards the end of spring and into summer (around November and December) when eggs are laid in the soil. After a few weeks, they hatch and begin feeding on the grass roots of your lawn. They emerge as adults (bronze beetles) from October through December.

As beetles they cause even more havoc (but that is another issue!)

In terms of treating the infestation in

your lawn, check at your local garden centre for what insecticides, both organic and non-organic, are available and are the most effective.

Treatment should normally occur from February through to late autumn, and also from spring into summer – but check the manufacturer’s advice on the container.

Whatever insecticide you use, it is critical that the product is flushed into the soil where the grass grubs will be found. If the lawn is severely damaged, it would be advisable to wait until spring, before attempting to sow a new lawn. In the meantime, take the remaining clumps of grass and inspect them for insects, and then rake the soil roughly to expose the area to foraging birds.

It’s just not cricket . . .

N

ow look, I’m a 50-something bloke, who clearly looks like he’s still in his

30s.

OK, and perhaps I’m also a tad delusional, but my point is that I’m not the same bloke I was when I was 18.

In fact, I’m not even the same guy from the past 12 months or so, where so much has happened and changed both personally and globally. Over time, my views on many things have certainly changed.

For a while there, I was even a Crusaders’ rugby fan before I came to my senses. Just joking, people. Just joking.

But changing, evolving, growing – that’s the beauty of being human. Many of us forget, or perhaps we chose to forget, that we were young once, made stupid mistakes and did things that we’d never do now.

That’s all part of growing up.

You live, you learn and mature with age. My generation probably count ourselves lucky that when we were young and stupid there were no mobile phones or social media to capture those moments.

That leads me to England

cricketer Ollie Robinson and a message for us all, especially the youth of today.

This week, Robinson should have been reflecting on an impressive test debut against the Black Caps at Lord’s and playing in the second test at Edgbaston.

Instead, he’s all but on the cricket scrapheap for something he did nearly 10 years ago.

Robinson, now 27, has been suspended from international play while a disciplinary investigation takes place after it emerged on day one of that first test that he had posted racist and sexist tweets – when he was still a teenager.

The discovery of the historical tweets marred his England debut and, timing-wise, they could not have been more embarrassing.

Just before the test, players had a “moment of unity” on the field, wearing T-shirts standing against all forms of discrimination, including racism and sexism.

And then the historical tweets emerged. Ouch. Talk about being bashed for six.

The historical social media incident with suspended England cricketer Ollie Robinson, pictured, is a lesson for us all.

But as embarrassing as it would have been for the blazer-wearing, gin-swilling bods that run England cricket, in no way does it justify the suspension of a clearly contrite and remorseful Robinson for teenage misdemeanours.

Robinson apologised profusely to the nation and his fellow

players. He then displayed real courage to perform with distinction on the pitch.

He’s already suffered consequences, but he still faces a disciplinary investigation. That just doesn’t seem fair.

Yes, it’s true that his tweets were totally unacceptable and highlighting them now rightly

brings those issues to the fore.

But is it correct or fair to condemn Robinson, who at the time was young and naïve and obviously going through a personally difficult time? Is it right that we judge him for the rest of his life on that one incident that took place when, really, he was still a boy?

Surely, there must be room in society, even in this ultra-correct climate we live in, to forgive for past indiscretions, especially from many years before and from when culprits were teenagers. Let’s hope so. Robinson deserves that opportunity. He also needs support and education to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

Importantly, the incident is also a very stark reminder to all of us, especially those with children.

We need to drum into our kids the very important message that anything they post online now could come back to haunt them like they never imagined or anticipated.

Those posts could also cost them everything they have worked so hard for.

Just ask Ollie Robinson.

He knows all about that.

Arrogance beyond belief!

T

he complete and utter arrogance displayed by the mouthpiece of the Waikato Mongrel Mob, Lou Hutchinson, is yet another reason why gangs should not be tolerated.

In case you were walking the Te Araroa Trail and missed the big news this week, a multi-national police sting operation that had been running since 2018, was acted upon, resulting in arrests through 18 countries.

Caught up in this were the usual merchants of misery, the Head Hunters, the Commancheros and the Mongrel Mob. Lou Hutchinson has been employed by the Waikato mob of misfits to put a spin on gang life.

It’s her comments about the police operation that show her utter arrogance and complete spit in the face of victims attitude from gangs. She said – “this is a total smear campaign driven by the NZ Police, politicians and mainstream media!”

Oh yes, our humble boys in blue, had a chat with some local MPs, contacted some newspapers and decided to drag the name of the Mongrel Mob through the mud!

At the very least it is just mouthing off, at the worst it is an attempt to place the actions and lifestyle of organised criminals as something that is acceptable.

Her words are dangerous.

Using Twitter, she reaches out to many to raise the apparent saintliness of the gang.

This country has an increasing gang population and there is nothing about their behaviour that is within the societal norms we expect of any group that op-

erates under a free democracy.

Our police were part of an international operation. I’m certain the first and only thing on their mind was to work hard to bring down as many of the illegal activities gangs run. They don’t need to do anything to smear the name of a gang.

All gangs are not only smeared, they reek of the rotten foul stench that is their way of life.

They hide behind gates, dogs, walls and project intimidation and fear to keep anyone away from what they do.

Kudos must go to all of the police men and women who have made it their choice to work so close to this dangerous group. Surveillance and investigative work is perilous, the ever present threat of gang retaliation and threats must weigh on their minds.

It is no surprise Police and Corrections hide their identity and addresses. I propose that all

cash seized goes into a fund that is used to provide home security and other security measures for Police, Corrections and their families.

As a bonus all the fancy boats, cars, motorbikes and houses seized are sold as soon as possible and go towards Victim Support including Women’s Refuge and child welfare groups.

If these packs of criminals are going to have their dirty noses out of joint from being caught for their illegal activities, then at least we owe it to those who suffer by their hands and those who take them off the streets to get some payback. *

And now for a completely different thought to end with. It struck me as a rather pathetic response from central government when confronted with the devastation of the recent flooding.

Make me Prime Minister and the first law change will be that all areas affected by a natural disaster receive the Lotto prize money until they get 10 million. In the same week when the district was offered initially $100,000 and then $500,000, Lotto was going to pay out $14 million.

In the end the payout was over 16 million dollars. Great for the single person who won it, but the money would have gone quite a way to ease the economic stress now facing the farmers and families who surround our town.

I don’t know, but if I was Prime Minister, that wouldn’t be the only law I’d change.

Dealing with the aftereffects of the flooding I

wonder how you all fared physically, mentally and emotionally during the floods last week.

I am one of the blessed ones who had a bag packed, but had no need to pick it up and move and no water damage in my home.

But the uncertainty was a drain. Uncertainty is a silent hidden stressor. Wondering how long, how high, and where rain and flooding will impact is very tiring.

to give yourself some slack if you are forgetful or irritable or sleepless later.

Take the time you need to name the aspects of the event that were hard for you, your family and your neighbourhood.

Then find the thing that gives you a sense of purpose and

certainty for this week.

I thank the council and locals who gave information as regularly as possible, those who took people in and those who now are coming alongside to help clean up.

Here in town the signs of flood disappear quickly, but driving out I pass roads closed to unnecessary traffic with a patient person waiting there all day to manage traffic.

These people remind me of all the hidden work and care which come together to maintain our health as community.

I drove home on that wet Sunday passing council staff clearing small lakes from road corners to find that a kind neighbour had cleared my gutter and our street was clear.

Sometimes I hear the complaint “They should …..” I wonder then whether to laugh or cry as “they” is us, and of course the council or government we elect and the staff who are paid from our rates and taxes.

Strong community grows out of a good combination of selfreliance and a noticing kindness that steps in to act.

A bid at four separate national titles awaits 16 local indoor bowlers over the next week, after they trekked to Blenheim for the New Zealand Indoor Bowls nationals yesterday.

And featuring among the line-up of entries from the Ashburton Indoor Bowls Association are a littering of former national champions, all out to replicate their previous efforts in their respective events.

The championships were split into Open and Masters a few years back, creating more opportunities for the older players in the sport, and Ashburton has strong representation in this year’s division with 11 players featuring throughout the week.

Two-time National Masters champion, Mark Sheard, will be out to try and emulate his efforts of recent years when he lines up again.

He’ll set foot in a very strong singles field to begin the week before pairing up with Raewyn Robin in the pairs, then Cecil Tubb and Neil Atkinson in the triples, which he won in 2018, and then the same trio in the fours to round out the week.

Also included in the masters line-up is the Chapman brothers, Graeme and Neil, who will combine with Waikato-based brother Barry in the triples, and then with Graeme’s wife, and former New Zealand representative, Maxine in the fours.

The week’s events, which begin today with singles qualifying, also includes the annual Northern Zone against Southern Zone Academy match on Wednesday, while the South and North Island teams for this year’s annual battle will be announced late in the week with a number of Ashburton players expected to feature prominently in the line-up.

F

orget redemption, this one’s all about community spirit.

And if Southern can pull off a result in today’s Combined Country Rugby competition final against Southbridge, their only hope is that it can put a smile on the faces of some of the hardest hit members of Mid Canterbury following last week’s flooding.

The entire Southern catchment was smashed by the deluge and a massive clean-up job is under way, but incredibly, things have dried up enough for a game of rugby to be played in Hinds – where a week ago it was plainly impossible.

And that opportunity hasn’t been lost on the Southern side.

“It’s been a pretty tough few weeks for a lot of people from around our area,” co-coach, and player, Jon Dampney said.

“So, to get the chance to play a final like this at home, in front of a lot of them, it really means a lot to us as a side, and we’ll be doing everything we can to try and give them something to cheer about.”

But it won’t be easy, and the Southern lads know it.

Yet, there’s an air of confidence about the camp that could almost border on arrogance if you didn’t know any better.

It’s one of the key things that makes Southern as good as they are each year, a real sense of self-confidence.

“I think we’ve shown that even when our backs are against the wall, we don’t lie down and let it continue.

“We’ve got a group of players who stand up, are confident in what they are capable of doing and their own abilities and know what it takes to win a game of rugby, you can’t put enough value on that.”

With Southbridge, it’s well known to expect the unexpected.

Just when you feel like they’re going

to play their normal structured style of game, they can turn a switch and leave you behind, stumbling in the dark.

So, Dampney and his fellow coach Richard McLea need to leave no stone unturned.

Every option has to be considered, and then prepared for.

Like a fine-tuned military operation.

“They’re good, that much is probably obvious.

“But they’re always good, we know that from years gone by.

“They’ve been in this situation on a number of occasions and like us, they know what’s ahead.”

“How we counter them is pretty simple, in theory.

“We don’t worry about them.

“We concentrate on ourselves and do what we can do.

“If we spend too much time worrying about what they’re up too, you run the risk of getting drawn into their game and not your own.

“I think they’ll know enough about us, and we know enough about them that we don’t need to think about it too much more.”

Included in those searches over every option will again see Dampney likely to swap the coaching jacket for a playing jersey at some point in the final, with his inclusion off the bench in last week’s semi-final against Prebbleton influential in their come-from-behind victory.

“The body isn’t quite as good as what it used to be that’s for sure, Sunday and Monday were pretty sore – but it was good to get out there and play a part in it all again.

“That being said, it’s about these guys, they’re the ones doing the job week in and week out, I’m just lucky to be able to be a part of it all.”

McLea and Dampney had good news on Tuesday night when their entire squad turned up to training, with only a few bumps and bruises from the Prebbleton clash.

That’s allowed them a chance to look to retain the same squad as last week for today’s final.

But it does come with some changes. The forward pack, which has been the diamond in the rough for the Southern side this year remains unchanged from last week’s match.

It centres around a nucleus of senior players with a heap of experience on their shoulders.

Saturday, June 12, 2021 Ashburton Guardian Continued from P44: Former National Provincial player, Scott Vessey, who played 19 games for Northland over three seasons almost a decade ago, is a linch-pin in the side, and his cool head under pressure is a vital cog in the inner workings of the engine room.

Add to that former Mid Canterbury captain Eric Duff and his partner-incrime Logan Bonnington, and you’ve got three very experienced players to set the tempo early in the match.

It’s out wide that the side has made changes from last week though.

Try-scoring machine, Petero Tuwai – who already has 11 tries next to his name this season – has moved from his usual spot in the midfield out onto the left wing.

It’s a move which may allow the powerful runner a little more space to really make an impact on the game.

James Hastings comes off the bench and will slot into the No.13 jersey, while Makasiale Kauvanua swaps from the left wing to the right.

With a squad deep with talent and experience, Dampney and McLea haven’t had to say too much this week, with the onus falling largely on the team’s leadership group.

“We haven’t had to say a lot this week, we’ve got a really strong leadership group of players who have taken a lot of the control this week and set the expectations.

“These are guys who have been out there and done it before and know what it’s all about.

“Last week they were the ones who

turned around the match for us, and we’ll need them to step up and lead from the front again this week if we’re to beat Southbridge.”

The Southern boys were able to get on to the Hinds paddock for their first training there for a couple of weeks on Thursday night, and when they return there on Saturday afternoon, it will be with every intention of lifting some rugby silverware into the air and celebrating with a community that’s been doing it pretty hard over the past weeks.

Eric Duff

A quiet achiever, but a rock-solid man in the face of adversity. Duff’s the one you’d look to if your life was on the line and you needed someone to help you out, he’s that reliable. Strong in the lineout, but equally as good off the ball around the breakdown a lot of the forward pack action will centre around his work and expect him to be right up for the occasion.

Petero Tuwai

Every good rugby side needs a game-breaker, and Tuwai has shown on countless occasions this season he’s the man for the job.

With a hunger for the try line unlike anyone else, he puts himself into good positions to make the most of opportunity. It’s not all brute strength either, he’s acutely aware of his own skillset, and backs himself in any situation.

Callum Burrell

Burrell has been one of the dark horses of this season and often flown under the radar in the sweep of big try-scoring efforts out wide.

But he’s constantly fronted up each week and produced outstanding rugby from the middle of the front row. With a really strong work rate and a clear desire to be busy all the time he’s one player who will be out to again produce a stand-out effort.

Southern line-up

Will Mackenzie If the role of the halfback is to play protagonist,Will Mackenzie fits the bill more perfectly than any other in Mid Canterbury. Bouncing, annoying and incredibly talented he’s a huge part of the Southern make-up and will be out to do his best to create havoc for Southbridge around the base of the ruck and at set piece time. With a strong distribution game and a cool head under pressure he’s one of the key cogs in the side.

Beautifully ruthless NETBALL

STANDINGS

A fortnight away from the courts of the EA Networks Centre did nothing to change the make-up of Mid Canterbury’s Premier Netball competition on Thursday night, with results running true to form.

All netball last week was cancelled in the wake of the flooding across the district and games declared as draws with no available catch-up date.

So, a delayed beginning to round two for the season unfolded on Thursday night.

And sides who were at the top of the pile during the first round picked up almost exactly where they left off.

Thursday night started with round one winners, Hampstead, taking on Methven, and despite a close first quarter in which both sides traded blows as they worked each other out, Hampstead proved the superior side, winning 47-22 in a really dominant performance.

They led throughout the match and looked in complete control, and while Methven showed their potential at times, they struggled to keep up with the speed Hampstead looked to play the game at.

They were nuggety, but at times not much else.

Working hard only for a last pass to not find a player, or some determined Hampstead defence shutting them down in and around the shooting circle.

Meg Gilbert, in the goal shoot position, was their standout on the court all night.

Not only was she dead eye dick in the shooting circle, but she also forced a number of turnovers from the offensive end of the court, harassing her rivals and creating plenty of problems.

Where Methven struggled – and it’s more a nod to the Hampstead midcourt than anything else – was in transition from one end of the court.

With pressure heaped on them every time they got their hands on the pill, they often struggled to find an open player, with numerous passes flying to no-one and possession wasted.

That was Hampstead’s golden point though.

Their slick work through the middle, led

by Jemma Stoddart and Kirsty Naish who controlled the game beautifully, allowed freedom for Alice Eddington and Natasha Waddell to land shot attempts with relative ease.

Eddington is really something to behold.

Yes, her shooting is sublime, and on Thursday night she went through a stage where she could land them from anywhere, no matter how far out from the post she was, but it was her work off the ball which was really impressive.

Nimble-footed and quick, she created

In a losing effort for Methven, Meg Gilbert was one of the best players on the court on Thursday night. her own opportunities on many occasions, with her height proving a real asset as plenty of overhead passes found her in open space to convert into points.

But it’s not as though shutting down Eddington is the key to success against Hampstead.

Waddell, in her own right, is just as effective, and has shown a liking for the longer attempts at goal as well, not afraid to back her own abilities and stand up and deliver for her side.

It’s probably unfair to single out just a few of the blue and golds on the court on Thursday night, because across the floor they were excellent, and in that kind of form it’s hard to see anyone toppling them through this stage of the season.

United, who are the only side to have beaten Hampstead this season, began their round two campaign proper on the right foot, and handed Mt Somers a tough welcome to Premier 1 with a 40-20 victory in the final game of the night.

ally good side with plenty of depth across the court, and look likely as the only team who might again pressure Hampstead when they clash again next week in round three.

Thursday night’s other winners were Celtic, who kept their good season on the court going with another strong victory, this time over Southern, winning 37-19.

On the improve every week, Celtic are the dark horse through the middle stage of the season, with a strong on-court presence and some talented players, they’ve already shown their capabilities this season.

They will look forward to a second clash with Methven next week, while Southern and Mt Somers will do battle in the other match.

Down in Premier 2, Ashburton College A

made a strong start to their bid to get back up into the top flight division of Mid Canterbury Netball with a dominant 45-15 win over Celtic B. There was no clean sweep for College sides in Premier 2 though, with the B side going down to Hampstead B in a good game 20-37.

The final game of the round saw Methven in good form, rounding out competition newcomers, Southern, with a 35-19 performance.

In Premier 3, United B, who dropped down from Premier 2 at the end of the first round, got their first win of the season when they beat Ashburton College 10A 2922, while Methven produced a strong performance to beat Ashburton College 18A 41-13.

Natasha Waddell has been in good form for Hampstead this season inside the shooting circle.
