Home tour nets $25k for hospice

$25,000 for the organisation.

Hospice Mid Canterbury’s Christmas Experience home tour fundraising leaders say they’re “totally overcome’’ at raising

The funds predominantly came from selling 230 tickets to Sunday’s home tour, which saw the paying public view six Ashburton houses all decorated with a Christmas theme. The tour also included a visit and viewing of Trott’s Garden and proceeds from stallholders on site.

Organiser Anne Marie Leech had hoped to sell 300 tickets, but

was thrilled at the return and grateful for everyone who bought tickets.

“(We’re) ecstatic with this amount, which goes into the Hospice Mid Canterbury’s coffers for much-needed services to the people of Mid Canterbury,’’ she said.

Leech said every dollar raised was important because the tour’s money-making success was vi-

tal for the future of Hospice Mid Canterbury, which needed at least $200,000 to run its annual operation.

“Every dollar is precious as hospice does not receive any Government funding,’’ she said.

Hospice Mid Canterbury is a vital organisation to the district, having been providing free non-clinical support to individuals and families dealing with

life-limiting illnesses since 2015, Leech said.

The home tour proceeds would go back to paying for the various hospice services from a range of therapies and support offered to individuals and their caregivers.

“The charity, Hospice Mid Canterbury, was the catalyst for people who did purchase tickets,’’ Leech said. “It’s a charity, which resonates with a lot of people.’’

Life-changing news for cystic fibrosis sufferers

The funding of Trikafta, a medication that will bring huge benefits for people with cystic fibrosis, is “life-changing” for Ashburton’s Caitlin Hopkins.

Caitlin, 20, and her parents Jess and Dan, heard the news yesterday, and were initially in shock.

“It came out of the blue for Caitlin. We didn’t expect it,” Jess Hopkins said.

“We were so emotional, and then people started ringing and texting us. We had to assure Caitlin it was happening.”

“We’re told Trikafta will add another 27 years to Caitlin’s life. That’s wonderful. She’s had her struggles and has been very sick at times.”

Caitlin only returned home from Christchurch Hospital last week after suffering from a blood infection and Jess said those times have been difficult.

“It’s been hard on Caitlin when she’s separated from us and her friends,” Jess said.

Ashburton mother, Dominique Ward, whose two-year-old daughter, Georgia, has CF said she won’t have to move overseas to get the medicine.

“It’s the best news we’ve ever had,” she said.

Georgia will qualify for Trikafta in four years’ time. In the meantime, she’ll continue with receive existing treatments to keep her healthy.

“It means she’ll be able to live an almost normal life,” Ward said.

Trikafta works for about 90 per cent of people with cystic fibro-

sis. It increases lung function and weight gain, reduces the burden of treatment, improves the quality of life and extends life expectancy.

Pharmac announced yesterday that it has reached provisional agreement to fund the medicine for people with CF aged six years and over.

It will be available from April 2023.

Chief executive for Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand (CFNZ), Lisa Burns, said the announcement “is a major milestone that will deliver access to a medicine which will prolong the lives of hundreds of Kiwis with CF”.

“Our community no longer needs to leave Aotearoa to access

this medicine, and those who have left already can now come home to be with their families and whanau.”

Since application was made to Pharmac in July 2021, “the last 16 months has been a rollercoaster for our CF community. But this latest news means that there is now light at the end of

this tunnel,” Burns said.

“Trikafta should now be the trailblazer to show how modern medicines like this can be funded in New Zealand.”

She explains Trikafta can give people with CF the equivalent of 27 more years at full health when compared to current supportive treatments.

RMA reform could save $149m/year

Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown says it’ll be important to carefully examining the details of the new Resource Management Act (RMA) legislation.

The Government has revealed sweeping changes to the RMA with a plan to scrap the act completely and replace it with three new pieces of legislation.

That would see 100 RMA plans in force around the country reduced to just 15 regional ones, aimed at speeding up the time it takes to gain resource consent for housing and major infrastructure.

It’s also predicted to slash the cost of gaining consent by 19 per cent, or $149 million a year.

“Many parties, from councils to developers and from planners to environmentalists, have become very frustrated with the time, cost, uncertainty and impact on the environment of getting a resource consent under the RMA,” Brown said.

“So, in that light, (the) council

welcomes the review.

“Whether the new regime will solve the problems of the RMA or not, and exactly how council and the community will be impacted is not clear, and in reality, only time will really tell and hopefully the claimed benefits will materialise.”

An Environment Canterbury spokesperson said it was too early to understand the impacts the changes would have on ECan’s work.

“Reform of the RMA is a once-in-a-generation opportunity and we are committed to playing our part in making reform a success.

“There is a lot to like about the new Natural and Built Environments Act and Strategic Planning Act, and we look forward to considering this important legislation in detail over the coming weeks.”

The big guy brings it in

COUNCIL

Compliance cost is ‘bureaucracy gone mad’

Spending $20,000 to confirm something you are already well aware of is “bureaucracy gone mad”, Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown says.

Audit NZ has advised the Ashburton District Council that any statements made in its annual report concerning drinking water compliance need to be independently validated by a qualified external party.

That means they are facing an estimated $20,000 cost to confirm that none of its schemes at present are bacteriological and protozoal compliant.

“We know we don’t comply. We know that,” Brown said.

“But the auditor wants someone to come in and do a report to tell us that we don’t comply. It will cost us upwards of $20,000, and then we’ll both agree we don’t

comply. It’s a waste of $20,000.”

Chief executive, Hamish Riach, explained that the issue is the independent verification of the testing regime and avoiding the annual report being red-flagged.

“While I agree it’s madness, and we agree that getting the independent assessment just to say we don’t comply feels wasteful, we have taken a view that having a qualified audit report based on our non-compliance of Three Waters is not a particularly desirable place for the council to be,” Riach said.

It is money that would have been better spent towards the planned works to make the schemes compliant, which has been budgeted for, Brown said.

“It’s a priority so that we do comply. We budgeted for it, let’s get it done,” Brown said.

Riach said it was not that simple.

“We simply can’t do everything we want to do with the resources we have available.”

He said Ashburton and councils across the country were struggling with balancing their business as usual and work for the Government reforms.

The council has budgeted $3.2 million for the Ashburton supply and $324,000 in Rakaia to install UV disinfection equipment in the next two years.

Works are also budgeted for Dromore, Fairton, Hinds, Chertsey, and Mayfield.

What’s the Guardian doing in Mona Square?

Historian Michael Hanrahan is puzzled about what the Ashburton Guardian was doing in Mona Square.

Hanrahan was close to completing a book on relocated buildings throughout Mid Canterbury, when he received a 70-year-old cutting from The Hub, a popular publication from Mid Canterbury Transport.

In it he read about the achievements of bridge builder and relocation expert, Phil Norman, who’d moved many historic buildings in and around Ashburton to new sites.

They included shifting Somerset Hotel from the corner of East and Burnett streets to Tancred Street, Pendarves School to Chertsey, Buchanan’s Mill from Wakanui to West Street and the bottom storey of The Guardian from Burnett to Mona Square.

Hanrahan, a former newspaperman himself, is intrigued at the move 100 years ago and would like to know more. He’s been in touch with Ashburton Museum but would now like the help of Guardian readers.

He’s even prepared to delay his publication in case people have historic information and photos of the shift.

Hanrahan has identified 150 major buildings that have been relocated over the past two centuries and is aware of more but is limiting himself to the ones he’s researched.

“I was intrigued to find out what they were and why and how they were moved,” he said. “Of particular interest was the methods used to transport them and how successful the relocation was.”

He’s also seeking photos of the original Tinwald Scout den on either Bryant Street or Lagmhor Road and Greenstreet School which has now become Green-

$31k boost for education trust LIFE EDUCATION TRUST

A Christmas windfall has come at the right time for Mid and South Canterbury’s Life Education Trust.

The trust has received $31,390 from Lion Foundation, administered by Braided Rivers Community Trust.

Chairperson of Life Education Trust, Jeff Paul, described the grant as amazing. “Funding like this is something we really depend on,” he said.

“The amount has come at a time when we’re finalising next year’s budget.”

He said the funding will contribute towards the salaries of its two educators and part-time administrator.

“They play a vital role in getting Life Education’s message out to about 8000 chil-

dren who we visit annually,” Paul said.

In all Lion Foundation provided $181,115 to nine Mid Canterbury organisations.

The other eight are Allenton Sports Club ($40,000), Hakatere Youth Sports Club ($36,981), Phoenix Pre-School ($20,664), NZ Deerstalkers Association, Ashburton branch ($16,459), Ashburton Golf Club ($14,390), Waireka Croquet Club ($10,000), Ashburton Cadet Corps ($7356) and Zonta Club of Ashburton ($3875).

In addition Braided Rivers funded $4000 towards Ashburton’s Santa Parade, Stacey Hooper ($1500) to attend national race walking events and CCS ($650) for rental costs.

CROPS 2022 omits to mention soil

The CROPS 2022 field day held at FAR’s Chertsey Arable Research Site on November 23 missed the mark, according to soil scientist John Baker, pioneer of the low-disturbance, no tillage revolution for farming in New Zealand.

“What bothered me was that emissions reduction in soil wasn’t even discussed at the field day,” Baker said.

“That was absolutely staggering and made me wonder ‘what’s going on with the organisers’ agendas’ that soil could be left out of it.”

It seems as though the Government is fixated on planting pine trees to halt emissions, but nobody on tractable land wants to do this, he said.

“No farmer who grows crops or livestock wants trees. This is the reaction I am getting and I can understand this but what staggers me is that farmers don’t understand the huge amount of emissions that come from cultivating the soil.

“If you cultivate one hectare

of soil you emit about the same amount of carbon equivalents as 1200 cows standing on that hectare belching for a day.”

So everybody is worried about the emissions coming from animals, but no-one is worrying about the soil – it is the biggest emitter, Baker said.

About 20 per cent of all the CO2 in the atmosphere comes

from the world ploughing the soil to feed itself. That’s a heck of a lot!

Baker told field day organisers he wouldn’t come all the way down to Canterbury (from Fielding) for the conference but would submit a written question to the panel. He did this, mentioning that about 9.5 million tonnes of CO2 goes into the atmosphere from one million hectares of

cultivated land reseeded in New Zealand each year – but his question never came up.

“This was very disappointing,” he said, as he was listening to the event online.

Talking to other soil scientists they couldn’t believe that the issue was never brought up, Baker said.

“Regenerative agriculture is

all about getting the soil biology going. Carbon is stored in three places in the world – in the oceans, in the soil and in the animals and plants that grow on the soil.

“If we banned the plough and everyone did low disturbance low tillage – we would mitigate something like 24 per cent of emissions from farming.

“And yet nobody seems to be giving this any traction.”

Baker said he went down to parliament and spent time with James Shaw (when he was in opposition) and told him about the soil issue “but when he got into government as Minister for Climate Change he didn’t want to know.

“This was disheartening.

“So I’m am staggered that if you hold a field day in Canterbury, the heart of ploughing, in mid-November, why soil doesn’t get mentioned?”

Good progress in lower Hinds catchment

An Environment Canterbury (ECan) study of water quality in the Hekeao/Hinds catchment shows the impressive work that’s being carried out, says ECan zone delivery lead for Ashburton, Henry Winchester.

“This review is a way to take stock and re-set.

“It’s a way of checking on the work and helping the working party to get on top of things,” he said.

The working group looked at each of the 16 recommendations made in 2016 by the Hinds Drains Working Party (HDWP), to see how many had been followed through on.

The HDWP was formed in 2014 by the Ashburton Water Zone Committee. It was given the job of organising plans for the main water bodies of the Lower Hinds Plains. The committee worked with HDWP members to carry out the recommendations.

In June 2022, on behalf of the HDWP, ECan gave a five-year progress report of the jobs completed. The recently formed Hekeao Hinds Lowlands Catchment Group (HHLCG) was now focused on improving the drains. The group had applied for funding from Ministry for Primary Industry’s (MPI) Freshwater Fund, which helped members to ramp up their activity in the Hinds catchment.

Winchester said’ “We often hear about the problem – but this was a chance to look at the ‘doing’ and it’s impressive. Take the managed aquifer recharge (MAR) for example. This is world-class research that can now be used anywhere in the world.”

He also wanted to highlight the role that the community had played.

“These ideas rely on landowners wanting to give things a go like having weirs in their drains,

and new ways of stock management,” he said.

Local farmer and chair of the HDWP, Craig Fleming, was among those who’d been happy to make changes to his on-farm processes to help the environment.

His long list of work included riparian plantings, fitting a border deflector to prevent fertiliser entering the drains, making plans for winter grazing to protect drains, and making sure irrigation screens met standards for fish protection.

He thought the way in which various groups had come together during the HDWP process had given farmers the go-ahead that their environmental actions were on track.

“We all have an interest in improving water quality. The remedies are tricky and will take time, but I really think farmers want the best for the environment around them,” Fleming said.

New directors step up for Ruralco board

Last month’s Ruralco AGM said goodbye to director and chair, Jessie Chan, and independent director, Brent Wheeler.

Three candidates stood forward for two vacancies on the board -former lawyer and contract milker from Hinds, Kate Beaumont-Smith; accountant and equity partner in a small dry stock farm and calf rearing operation, Rhea Booker; and director and Dunsandel dairy farmer, Tony Coltman.

Booker and Coleman were elected – Coltman for a third term on the board.

New independent director, Helen van Orton, a professional director with 20 years of experience was elected.

The board will appoint the new chair at its next meeting in December.

Ruralco shareholders faced compliance issues, challenging weather patterns, Covid interruptions, on-farm inflation and production costs – all of which created challenges.

“While commodity prices remain high for many agricul-

tural sectors, input costs have put pressure on our farmers and reduced overall margins,” said Chan.

“Fuel and fertiliser costs have been up there, but also price increases because of supply issues and labour shortages from the fallout of Covid-19.

“Weather and compliance continue to make challenges for the farming community and Ruralco.”

Ruralco achieved positive results for 2022 through some increases and through market share and had shown over the financial year that seasonal expenses were under control, said Chan.

The business continued to grow its group turnover, recording $279.1 million compared to $245.3 million last year. Gross profit slightly increased to $12.0 million compared to $10.6 million in the previous year. Group equity at the end of the 2022 financial year was $17.3 million, up from last year’s $16.9 million.

A key moment in media history

Willie Jackson is fast becoming my favourite politician.

Jackson is the Broadcasting Minister, who has kept to his word by putting the heat on tech titans Google and Meta (the parent company of Facebook) to force them to pay a “fair price” to New Zealand media companies, like the Ashburton Guardian, for news content we produce.

It’s content that those internet giants share on their online platforms at no cost and reap near unimaginable wealth and power from it.

Jackson knows that’s just unfair, and it has been for years, so he’s taken it on himself to push for change to keep New Zealand news media organisations sustainable and relevant because he knows how important that is to society and democracy in this country.

Already, there have been some

significant moves, with Google having signed commercial content deals with the likes of BusinessDesk, Radio New Zealand, online site Newsroom and NZME, which owns the New Zealand Herald. The Guardian was also involved in discussions with Google but is now part of a collective of New Zealand media seeking to bargain with those super platforms.

Jackson will tell you that those initials deals are a good start but it’s nowhere near enough for a man who seems to have a particular soft spot to ensure the smaller regional players are looked after in the land-

scape-changing time. And he’s right because the Stuffs, NZMEs and Allied Press corporate organisations already do pretty well, with their obvious advantages in resources and scale.

“It’s also about the Northern Advocates. It’s about the Whanganui Chronicles,’’ Jackson said, rattling off two of many smaller media organisations he is just as focused on supporting.

“We’ve got to give hope to the small guy.’’

That hope gained momentum on Sunday and it should delight Guardian readers and supporters.

Because thanks to Jackson’s work, he has confirmed that the Government has signed off on new legislation that would force the global platforms to show us the money.

That legislation would be modelled on similar laws in Australia and Canada, which would

require Google and Meta to pay for the local news they use, with estimates suggesting $30 million to $50 million could flow back to New Zealand media.

Jackson has labelled the new legislation a “backstop”, which would be enacted if the big internet platforms didn’t voluntarily strike deals with Kiwi media outlets. They’ll have three to six months to do so before the mandatory mediation process would begin.

Looking at what’s happened in Australia and now Canada, it’s highly likely the internet behemoths would be desperate avoid any legal process and would strike up deals with New Zealand media companies before then. Fair deals have only really been struck in countries where there was legislation or the threat of it.

“In Canada, deals are being done everywhere,’’ Jacksons said.

“They’ve just done 150 deals

because they (Google and Facebook) don’t want to go legislation.”

So, that sounds grand, but will it really work? Will fair compensation be dished out because we all understand the power and global influence of Meta and Google?

Well, there is growing optimism it could happen because a precedent was set in Australia last year. Our media friends across the ditch went through the very same process, with reported payments in excess of $A200m being paid to Australia media companies by Google and Meta.

Now it’s New Zealand’s turn in what is a key moment in our media history.

Without that long overdue compensation, some of our local media company colleagues could face a very tough future.

Willie Jackson reckons that won’t happen on his watch.

Meanwhile, what is money used as donation-wise? (3,3,7)

The Spanish take a bit of fish like a fairy (5)

Time to come when Ute fur is ruffled (6)

When surrounding pulpit-top, East spells the end of church (4)

How many words of three or more letters, including plurals, can you make from the five letters, using each letter only once? No foreign words or words beginning with a capital are allowed. There’s at least one five-letter word.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Because you show up when expected and do what you said you would, you gain trust and respect. To you, this is just normal. In the process, you make someone feel safe – a wonderful gift to provide.

TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): A person who seems to have it all together is struggling in ways you wouldn’t imagine. You don’t have to know what the struggles are to sense that your compassion is needed here.

GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Theoretical knowledge isn’t going to help much. Wherever possible, apply the answer, try things, put plans in motion and see what happens. Let your ideas dance on the stage of life.

CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You can exchange much without words and will in fact do it constantly today as you interact with your environment. You’ll send out energy and be able to communicate wordlessly at a great distance.

LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): There is a treasure inside each person, and if it’s your intention to get to it, you will. People love to show you the best they have. You’ll establish a meaningful connection.

VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Love really can change everything, heal the hurts and conquer all. It doesn’t always go that way, but it can. Lean into it and believe. Celebrate all that’s right.

LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You deserve to be rewarded for your hard work. The question is, who is going to do this? If no one is stepping up, that only means you get the pleasure and the honour of rewarding yourself in exactly the way you’d most appreciate.

SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Loved ones seem strong, but they need an advocate. There are certain situations that really should be handled with an entire team. Legal and medical matters fall into this category.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You are able to dial the emotional intensity up or down at will. Amazing! Relatedly, you will experience the serenity of a soft flow of thoughts blowing in gentle waves through the screen of your mind.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): It takes discipline to listen and love at the level you do. Your undivided attention is a valuable gift. Those with similar capabilities understand the treasure. The others will catch up later.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): There are times to avoid the pressure, but right now, you’re better off welcoming it. It will make you better. You can use the hum of stress to do excellent work.

PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You really have come a long way, paid your dues, and are more than deserving of the bounty drifting your way in the weeks to come. Open up your arms. Take it in.

The Santa parade on Saturday didn’t disappoint, with bright sunshine helping set the scene down East Street.

The Ashburton CBD was a great place to be on Friday night, as crowds turned out to celebrate the official lighting up of the town’s giant Christmas tree.

Daniel Alvey was there to catch the action, as family groups enjoyed live music, dance performances and lots of kids activities.

There’s been no shortage of action out on the Brandon Links over the past week. Competition is really starting to heat up in Mid Canterbury Softball’s Senior Mixed competition, with only one point splitting the top two teams.

Bailey back in style

the first women home cup that bears the name of her father, Chris Ward.

Tony McManus continued his great patch of form with a solid fourth place.

Cole Harris and Rob Campfes rounded out the top six.

O’Donnell had to work hard for his win, pushed too the line in a sprint finish with fellow back marker Kyle Gray.

O’Donnell recorded the fastest time of the day, riding the course in 82.49.

Kristine Marriott produced a top shelf effort to secure third place and also lift

Riders also had to content with warm summer conditions that caused tar on a stretch of the road to melt, to a point that close to half the field was unable to complete the race due to a build-up of tar on the wheels.

The juniors contested a 20km hand-

icap event. Leah Reid continued her great run of strong results with another top ride to take the victory and major spoils.

Isabel Wall was game in her charge to the line to secure second place. Zac Brookland claimed third place and also recorded fastest time honours, riding the distance in 36.07.

Next week the club will contest one of its blue ribbon events, the Club Championships around the Wakanui Beach block.

White Ferns in control

The White Ferns have taken an unassailable 2-nil lead in the T20 cricket series against Bangladesh after beating the visitors by 37 runs in Dunedin.

The White Ferns set Bangladesh a target of 149 in the second T20 cricket international.

Bangladesh were much more competitive in the field after the thrashing they received in the first match.

The White Ferns lost early wickets but Wellington team-mates Maddy Green and Amelia Kerr then put on a 77-run partnership.

That got the home side to a respectable 148 for 4 from their 20 overs.

Bangladesh couldn’t score quickly enough and three run outs hurt them big time.

Bangladesh finished 111 for 8.

Wellington’s Rebbeca Burns got her international debut at the age of 28 after being called into the squad yesterday to cover injury to White Ferns batter Brooke Halliday.

The third T20 match is on Wednesday in Queenstown.

career, seven of them on the grass track surfaces.

Sarah O’Reilly is taking good form and good fortune across the Tasman with her this week.

Harness racing’s hot-shot young gun left for Australia yesterday as she embarks on a title defence of her Australasian Young Driver’s Crown won three years ago – having not been able to defend it for the past two years because of Covid.

And, as she has done season, O’Reilly departed for Australia on a high after a big weekend.

It began at Wingatui on Friday where she picked up a driving double, including one for her bosses Brent and Tim White with Kohli Trouble early in the day.

She then landed a second later on the programme with Fast Whispering.

Saturday saw O’Reilly, who is certain to win the New Zealand junior drivers’ premiership, grab feature race success when one of her old favourites, Buckskin, delivered in style in the Akaroa Cup.

The duo have now won eight races together during the sixyear-old son of American Ideal’s

Stalking the speed on Saturday, they found clear air at the top of the straight and burst through to win lifting the gelding’s stake earnings to above $70,000 in the process.

By Sunday, O’Reilly had shifted the goalposts from the green grass tracks to Harness Grand Prix day at Addington, and while she didn’t salute, she did make it into the money in one of the Group Ones, finishing third with the Paul Nairn-trained Tectonic.

With 65 wins on the board, O’Reilly is now 26 wins clear on the junior drivers premiership.

“I think I can relax a bit now,” she said on Friday.

“I was a bit worried about the ones behind me catching me for a while there, but the lead looks pretty good.”

With that title in the bag, she can now dig in and defend her other notable title in Australia across five days this week.

She’s one of a group of Australasia’s best young driving talents competing in the series alongside two other New Zealand drivers.

The championships begin today at Melton, where O’Reilly has two drives who both look like each way chances.

“A lot of it comes down to the

barrier draw, but it will be good to be over there competing again after a few years away from the championships, and to be able to drive at some different venues.”

After racing tonight, the com-

Young tennis stars shine on court

Below

The next wave of local tennis stars put their efforts out on the court at the weekend during the Mid Canterbury Junior Age Group Championships.

A strong field of players lined up across both days of competition to garner some experience of playing tournament tennis and, while some familiar names shone up in the age groups, there were new names for the future coming to the fore in the lower age groups which is an exciting development for the proud Mid Canterbury Tennis scene.

Out on the Braided Rivers Community Trust Tennis Centre courts, play began on Saturday morning and ran until Sunday afternoon with a high-level of tennis played across the weekend’s matches.

For players aged under nine, right up to the under 16 and under 18 age group, there was a little bit of something for everyone.

Two singles events were held for the girls with the 10 and under singles taken out by Sophie Bartlett ahead of Isla Adam while in the 12 and under category, Annalise King emerged victorious over Christine van Rooyen.

Van Rooyen turned the tables on King in the doubles though, combining with Hazel Montgomery to take out the title over King and Imogen Turney.

In the boys’ action, a very competitive 9 and under boys category in the singles where 12 players lined up saw the No.1 seed, Damon Yan take honours ahead of Beau Kirwan.

Five players entered the 10 and under boys grade with Lennox Parsons living up to his No.1 billing to win over Raymond Yan.

Arlo Parsons was victorious in the 12 and under boys singles ahead of Digby Porter, and Ashton Cromie continued his good form to win the 12 and under singles title from Jamie King.

Caleb Kelly justified his No.1 seed in the 16/18 boys’ singles, winning from Jonty Porter.

In the doubles, Spencer Hampton and Beau Kirwan won the 9 and under title from Braxton Mills and Toby Ross, Brax Gordon and Raymond Yan claimed the 10 and under from Isla Adam and Lennox Parsons.

Arlo Parsons made it a double for the weekend in the 12 and under boys’ doubles, combining with Digby Porter who he beat in the singles final to take the win from Ethan Mitchell and Toby Smith.

The 14 and under boys’ doubles also saw the top two singles players combined, with Cromie and Jamie King winning from Isaac Adam and Murphy Porter.

In the senior doubles for the 16/18 category, Kelly and Jonty Porter, who were also the top two in the singles, claimed victory over Brendon McCrea and Riley Wall.
