Two South Island dairy farms confirmed as infected properties with mycoplasma bovis are in the Ashburton District. A total of four farms are the latest to be added to the list with the cattle disease by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). A third South Island dairy farm is located in the Timaru district. Two of the farms belong to the same owner. MPI did not specify if the same Geoff Gwyn owned properties were both in Ashburton. A dry-stock farm in Waikato was also classified as an infected property, bringing the total number to 36 properties. Animal movements from previously known infected farms most commonly lead to the transmission of the disease and tracing work on the farms is under way. MPI said it would work with the farmers to schedule the timing of the “depopulation’’ of stock from their properties to minimise production impacts as much as possible. The culled animals will go to be processed at meat companies. Afterwards, the properties will go through a cleaning and disinfection process before new herds can be introduced to them. So far 260,219 samples have gone through the Animal Health Lab and 247,852 tests have been completed. MPI director of response Geoff Gwyn said in a statement that it was vital farmers looked after themselves and their families. “Don’t feel like you have to suffer in silence or that anyone will think less of you for seeking help,’’ he said. “We know farmers are in this position through no fault of their own and it’s important they get the necessary support at this time.’’ The MPI team will continue operating over the Christmas break, as are many support agencies. MPI offices, will, however, be closed on statutory holidays. Farmers under restriction are advised to contact their Incident Control Point manager in the event of an emergency.

Hitting the high notes in Methven Mount Hutt College head of department music Matthew Wood smiles when asked what he would like to achieve at the school in future. “To make it the best music department in the country,” he says, and then laughs a little. While he can’t help but see the amusing side of having such an ambitious goal, on a more serious note he says he may as well aim high. “Whenever we are setting goals for anything, we say: ‘what’s the highest you can set them’?” the dad-of-two explains. “There’s no point aiming low if it turns out you don’t get there, at least setting them high, you will get as high as you can go. “The goal is really to build the department into one that is going to offer our students here every opportunity and ideally become something the school is known for in the community.” And he is well on his way to making Mount Hutt College known for its musical achievements, both in the community and further afield. He said he has loved his first year at the college, where the kids have been keen to learn and the senior management team has helped him lay strong foundations for the next four to six years. The biggest shift has been the number of students accessing extracurricular lessons, delivered by either itinerant or private tutors. Demand for lessons in piano and other instruments, including clarinet, flute, saxophone, trumpet and tuba, have increased, so much so that earlier in 2018 the school was running out of instruments. Two local families came to the rescue by donating pianos and the Ashburton Silver Band and Ashburton Intermediate School also helped out. Wood said at Year 8 level there were now about 60 per cent of children learning an instrument, compared to about 10 per cent or less in Year 11. He wants to retain that high percentage as the students move up the year levels, and this will in turn feed into increasing the number of musical groups at the school.

There is already growing numbers of music groups, including concert bands, orchestras and rock groups, and he is wanting to extend the latter from just a couple up to 10 or more. The 35-year-old has been teaching for about 12 years and, prior to coming to Mount Hutt College, was head of music at the
similarly-sized Lindisfarne College in Hawke’s Bay for nine years. By the time he left, the school was renowned for its achievements, bringing home wins from national concert band festivals and chamber music contests. Bands from the school won the regional finals of Rockquest four years in a row and individuals
made it to national groups such as the youth symphonic band, secondary school symphony orchestra and secondary students choir. Wood grew up in Ashburton and attended Ashburton College, and is enjoying being back in the district near family, with wife Laura and their two daughters, aged 4 and 1. Wood said music had been a passion of his since he was a child. “The biggest thing about the job I enjoy is being able to inspire that same sort of passion and love

for music.” Few would argue that music is good for the soul and Wood points out scientific research showing it is good for the brain as well. Playing an instrument exercises both hemispheres of the brain and the bridge between the two hemispheres, improving memory and problem-solving skills. “And then there’s just the fun side of it,” he said. “You get a lot of pleasure out of playing a musical instrument, you get a lot of pleasure out of playing music with others.”

College year one of consolidation A
s he wraps up his second year as principal of Ashburton College, Ross Preece says it’s often the things the community doesn’t see that a school uses to measure its success. And for him, receiving a Ministry of Education ERO report that gave the college high pass marks all round, is the best reward any principal could receive. “It comes around every three years and this time round we were rapt. It’s like getting a medical to a person, it’s our clean bill of health,” Preece said. Like any good news from a school, a positive ERO often flew under the radar; a bad one would make it into social media, he said. “And we all know if it’s up there on Facebook, then it must be true. But these guys are the experts and they were very affirming in what they found.” A major event for the college over the past year had been work on curriculum changes that would impact on Year 9 students next year, Preece said. The school was moving to an innovative pilot for first-year students that would see them involved in a project-based learning model that sees the integration of some subjects rather than working on the traditional standalone subject model. Up to 12 hours of a student’s week will be spent in the integrated subject model. About 50 per cent of next year’s Year 9 students will be taking part in the pilot and the option had been really well supported by parents. The change was significant for a school and preparation for next year’s pilot had absorbed a considerable amount of staff time this year, Preece said. “The idea is to prepare students for what will be an uncertain future in a changing workplace.” The new school year would also see the start of a new Ako programme that would replace family form time. Across the school there will be 64 groups of about 16 students, each made up of students from Year 9 to 13. They will meet for one hour each week as well as for a short time on Monday and

Friday mornings. Those groups will create a ‘family’ within the school where students can be taught a range of values. They will also provide opportunities for mentoring and peer support. Looking ahead to 2019, Preece said he took a fair amount of satisfaction in knowing the year would start with the college all but fully staffed. “We could be a little short in digital technology. Those teachers are as rare as hens’ teeth because if they’re industry capable they can earn far more money in their industry than they can in teaching,” he said. Ashburton was fortunate, Preece said, in that it was seen as an attractive place to live and the college was seen as a progressive
place to teach. “Our school’s in great shape and our recent appointments were interested in applying because we’re undertaking curriculum reform. We’re an existing school that’s looking to the future.” The college will start 2019 with a slightly lower roll than this year, but 2018 had a very large intake of Year 13 students. Student numbers, however, will be higher than ministry predictions, he said. The college was also experiencing a growing trend where Year 12 students were leaving for employment. That they were able to find work in their own district was a great outcome for the college, the students and the community, Preece said. Currently the school was at
100 per cent occupancy and that wouldn’t change next year with its predicted roll, he said. Every year numbers were usually higher, with a number of previously unenrolled students turning up. There are 263 known Year 9 entrants, up on the ministry’s prediction of 245. And that meant space would continue to be at a premium and would remain so until the long-awaited classroom rebuild was signed off. Preece has been working with the school board and the Ministry of Education during the year on a rebuild programme he says will take the college well into the future. How extensive that rebuild will be is as yet unknown, but he’s hopeful it will be ex-
tensive and that details will be known early in the new year. Like many principals around New Zealand, Preece and his staff have to deal with a wide range of student behaviours and, like most, during the year he was forced to defend allegations that the school had a bullying culture after a video of students fighting was filed on social media. Through social media, issues were often blown out of proportion, but any incidents relating to bullying or anti-social behaviour were taken very seriously by the school board, he said. The school worked with the New Life Church to provide an on-campus buddy system, 24/7, that saw older teens available during break time to talk with students in a mentoring role. “They do a fantastic job of supporting students. They’re not trained counsellors but they’re a listening ear.” The year will also begin with the threat of strike action hanging over schools across the country. Secondary teachers will join their primary counterparts in strike action over both pay and conditions. And Preece has long been outspoken about the imbalance between teachers’ pay rates and the huge and varied workload they now carry. He’s concerned at the dwindling number of teachers who want to move up to the role of principal and said there will shortly be a large exodus at the top with many principals now edging towards retirement. For younger teachers, the incentives were not there to take on senior roles the same as they were not there for young people to take on what was an incredibly rewarding job as a teacher, he said.

Clean windows on a Friday More
used to helping others
BY HEATHER MACKENZIE It is not often having your windows cleaned can spark a fond family story, but that is exactly what happened in the van der Eik household when Katelyn Hogg and Katie Polmear granted Bill and Colleen’s window-cleaning wish. Bill’s mother, an extremely house-proud woman, cleaned her windows religiously every Friday. Disaster struck one Friday when it rained. Bill, trying to help, said: “Don’t worry mother, if you can’t see out then nobody will be able to see in.” That comment was enough to send her into orbit. His mother had a hankie in her hands, so after hearing his comment she was in such a state, the hankie went round and round in her hands so fast it was quickly reduced to a sweaty, grubby mess. The story stopped there, so noone is any the wiser if she cleaned them in the rain or broke with tradition and did them on Saturday instead. Bill and Colleen were very appreciative of Katelyn and Katie’s help. Colleen used to be able to clean

“What lovely girls. It’s heart-warming to see young people out and about doing volunteer work, it reminds us both how fortunate we are to live in such a kind community.”
We all find it hard to ask for help and Lesley Ballard is no exception. In her working career Lesley has been an SCPA inspector, as well as an arthritis educator. She was also a volunteer cub leader for several years. “For most of my life I have been the one helping others, but due to my illness and the memory loss it causes I am now the one asking for help,” she said. “I am getting better at asking. Park Street Day Care is also excellent. “There I get the opportunity to socialise and participate in activities in a safe and understanding environment.

“Fortunately, I also have a supportive, wonderful husband.” Lesley’s Christmas wish to go to the Ashburton Cemetery and place flowers on the graves of her mother, father and her sister was answered by Jenny Gill. Jenny not only offered her time and transport, she also supplied some of the flowers as well. Both Lesley and Jenny commented on what a great idea the Christmas wishes project was, saying it brings so many members of the community together, people who may otherwise never have met. They added it was a beautiful Christmas feeling, helping and being helped – spreading love and kindness throughout our community.

Indonesian authorities have resumed the search for 154 people missing after a tsunami hit the Sunda Strait coasts as the country commemorates the anniversary of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami that killed around 230,000 people. According to the latest official figures, which authorities say could increase, the death toll has reached at least 429, with more than 1500 injured and some 16,000 displaced. The rain continues to hamper rescue work on the fourth day of searching the ruins of collapsed buildings, vehicles and thick vegetation. Experts believe the giant waves were caused by the collapse of part of Anak Krakatau volcano after it erupted in the Sunda Strait. Fear of a new tsunami caused by the volcano’s continued activity led officials to warn residents to avoid the coasts.
Yesterday, hundreds of people fled to high ground in Java’s Sumur district during a new Anak Krakatau explosion. Indonesia this week commemorates the 167,799 people who lost their lives in the country in 2004 as a result of the Boxing Day tsunami caused by a magnitude-9.1 earthquake off the northern coast of Sumatra. The disaster also caused deaths in a dozen other nations around the Indian Ocean, killing around 230,000 people in total. Various events will take place in the Sumatran province of Aceh, the hardest hit by the natural disaster, under the slogan “Build together, stay alert,” chosen for the 14th anniversary. Indonesia is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of great seismic and volcanic activity that is shaken every year by some 7000 earthquakes, most of them moderate. - EFE

In brief Guatemalan boy dies An eight-year-old boy from Guatemala has died in US government custody, the second immigrant child to die in detention this month. US Customs and Border Protection say the boy showed “signs of potential illness” on Tuesday and was taken with his father to a hospital in Alamogordo, New Mexico, the agency said. There he was diagnosed with a cold and a fever. He was given medications and released later that that day. The agency said the boy was returned to the hospital the same day with nausea and vomiting. Eight dead in bus hijacking Eight people have been killed and 22 injured after a knife-wielding man hijacked a bus and it crashed into a crowd in southeast China, state broadcaster CCTV says. The hijacker drove the bus into the pedestrians for 300 to 400 metres in the city of Longyan, in Fujian province, the official Xinhua news agency reports. It was not immediately clear how many casualties were on the bus and how many were in the crowd. Police identified the suspect as a 48-year-old man from Longyan. Carriage collision injures 20 Twenty people have been injured, two seriously, in a collision of two horse-drawn carriages during a Christmas Day outing in Germany. The DPA news agency quoted police in southern Bavaria as saying the two carriages, each with 10 passengers, were approaching a rail crossing single file when the first carriage halted. The second carriage did not stop and overturned during the collision. One man had to be taken to the hospital by helicopter. DPA said the driver of one of the carriages was also seriously hurt during yesterday’s accident. - PA

Royals celebrate Christmas The Queen has woven personal reflections into her annual Christmas message, offering the customary wishes for peace and saying she hoped she had attained a measure of wisdom during her 92 years. “Some cultures believe a long life brings wisdom,” Queen Elizabeth said in a pre-recorded message. “I’d like to think so. Perhaps part of that wisdom is to recognise some of life’s baffling paradoxes, such as the way human beings have a huge propensity for good and yet a capacity for evil.” On a lighter note, the Queen noted that 2018 was a busy year for her family with two weddings, two new babies and another due next year. “It helps to keep a grandmother well occupied,” she said. The annual message was broadcast to many of the 53 Commonwealth countries after the Queen and senior royals attended a church service on the outskirts of one of her country estates. The Queen and other members of the British royal family received cheers from
a Christmas crowd when they arrived. A chauffeured limousine delivered the 92-year-old monarch to St Mary Magdalene Church, while younger royals walked from nearby Sandringham House. Prince Charles led the way, followed by his sons: Prince William and his wife, Catherine, and Prince Harry and his pregnant wife, Meghan. Harry and Meghan, who are expecting their first child in spring, walked arm in arm next to William and Catherine. Enjoy Mid Canterbury in 2019 W
hen you sit down this time next week and think about what you’ve achieved in the past 12 months, will you be happy? Can you say you’ve set out to do what you wanted to during the year that has gone? Maybe the goal was to buy your first home, spend less time at work and more with the family, lose that extra 5kg you’ve been lugging around far too long or even just live that little bit more-happier than normal. For as long as anyone seems to care to remember the end of the hustle and bustle of Christmas and then the impending celebrations of New Year will bring
forward for many the prospect of reflection and the opportunity to look at what they might like to adjust in the years ahead. Most of them are lofty – because, what’s the point in setting easy-to-achieve targets that you can knock off in the first few weeks of the year, right?
But they give us a good starting point for a new year – a chance to perhaps introduce a new you. New Year resolutions are always interesting prospects. I’ve set them most years for the past 20 years – and I can honestly, hand on my heart – say I’ve never achieved one of them. Often through lack of trying because by the time February rolls around it’s thrown in the too hard basket or something else has claimed the attention. It’s not that you get to the point you don’t want to carry on with your goals, but often that life – as it so inevitably does – gets busier and busier and all of a sudden, there’s no time in which to
achieve what you actually want to achieve. In short, life gets in the way and stops you from living life. In 2019, I’m making only one goal for the 12 months ahead and that’s to just simply live life as it comes. Getting caught up in the small things, the insignificant ones that often take up too much of your time, is out the window. Life’s for living and all that jazz. Living here in Mid Canterbury gives the perfect opportunity to do it as well. This little community that we call home is the perfect backdrop for a slightly quieter life – one without a whole heap of stress in
day-to-day life. We can head to work and be there within an hour to any corner of the district – the closest thing we usually get to a traffic jam is having to stop at a give way sign and without a major city centre, there’s not the same feel of being captured in a corporate world of skyscrapers. Instead we see wide open spaces and some of the best scenery in New Zealand. And the prospect of stopping and just enjoying this district for what it is seems a lot more appealing than setting a personal goal that I know I’m odds on not to achieve. What about you?

Leaders in farm innovation It’s no secret that inventiveness and ingenuity are stimulated by difficulty. New Zealand’s world-famous dairy sector effectively had its beginnings in 1814 when missionary Samuel Marsden landed the first milking cows and a breeding bull. From those early colonial days when the milking cow would be tied up on a rough piece of cleared land with the farmer or his wife, crouching or sitting to squeeze the milk by hand into a bucket, New Zealand settlers and their successors have been leaders in farming innovation, much of it driven by necessity. It’s 100 years since Kiwi soldiers, having fought for King and country in World War One, returned to New Zealand and turned their hands to farming thanks to the ‘soldier-settler’ scheme. To honour their determination, hard graft, and No. 8 wire ingenuity, DairyNZ has curated this pictorial collection showing some of the important innovations from the early 1900s to today when dairy farmers can herd their cows using a mobile phone app. The unsung hero of New Zealand dairying is a Wairarapa dairy farmer, Norman Daysh, the inventor of the vacuum pump milking machine that revolutionised the dairy industry. He experimented with early machines on a cow, Daisy, in his Wairarapa farmhouse kitchen. Daysh secured more than 20 patents for his machine before travelling from Wairarapa to New
NZ is recognised for its pasture-based grazing systems. York in 1913 in the hope of finding a global company interested in helping him perfect the machine he had designed. In New York, the DeLaval company recognised the potential of his machine and innovative spirit. Together, they fine-tuned the machine, and then in 1917, launched it to the world. The world never looked back. The herringbone dairy configuration (1952) and then the rotary dairy (1969) were also designed by Kiwi farmers keen to put behind them the back-breaking business of stooping to milk, and the time-consuming business of moving cows in and out of the shed that existed with walk-through dairies. most areas of dairy – from efficient milking and yard systems, and profitable grazing systems using specially bred grasses, to cows that are so superior that even Queen Elizabeth approves of them. The queen has a long-term connection with the Waikato based Ferguson dairy farming family and their Ferdon Genetics. Other innovations are effluent management systems, and riparian planting along fenced waterways to lower the environmental footprint and many improvements made in dairy processing and products. Today that extends to Kiwi ingenuity speeding up the process of manufacturing mozzarella. In one plant alone in Canterbury enough of the cheese is produced to top 500 million pizzas a year.

The good, the bad and the ugly of 2018 The good
time convincing me the climate is not changing with 2018 seeing more extremes than any year in my living memory. Increased volatility is the only constant.
The weather:
T
his time last year much of the country was in a screaming drought – a farmer’s worst nightmare. Although Mother Nature absolutely forgot to turn the tap off in November and early December, at least once we dry out there will be grass for Africa and for more than quite a few sheep, cattle and deer.
Mycoplasma bovis: As we head into our second Christmas with M.bovis, Santa will not come early for the more than 200 farmers and their families under threat (and movement control) from this heinous wasting cattle disease, contracted through no fault of their own. Despite the denials and protestations of many in the animal rights brigade, farmers love their animals. That’s why they’re in the gig in the first place. Only mongrel farmers can watch animals suffer.
Mycoplasma bovis: Twelve months ago many were resigned to living and farming with bovis. If a week’s a long time in politics, a year is an eternity in farming. I wouldn’t be so bold as to suggest bovis is beaten but we’ve given it a hell of fright in 2018. Pamu (the artist formerly known as Landcorp): Has been criticised heavily from the farming fraternity for meddling by making submissions to the tax working group. However, on the credit side of the ledger, the state-owned farmer has been a leader in sustainable farming with innovations such as woollen surfboards and deer milk for use in South Korean cosmetic products. Prices: If you exclude strong wool (which is a dog) and dairy prices cooling their heels after a very acceptable 2017-18 season, the planets have aligned for farmers. The other big three acts in town – red meat, forestry and horticulture – have enjoyed standout years. The Waimea Dam: Sanity prevailed. The lunatics are no longer running the asylum. Maybe we need to revisit Ruataniwha?

That’s a question many farmers were asking when Pamu poked its nose into a CGT. WTF? Pamu is politicising farming. Surely that is not its brief? The Labour-led Coalition Government: I reckon farmers should wake up every
morning and Praise the Lord for Winston Peters. He is the handbrake on the Greens, who, if they were in his position of power within the government would change the face of farming – and not for the betterment of the economy. Plus the likes of David Parker probably doesn’t need too much encouragement either, even though he’s doing a good job as Trade Minister. The 1080 protesters: Although any poison is far from perfect, this is by far the lesser of two evils. I don’t often find myself agreeing with Eugenie Sage, but do these aggressive and sometimes downright dangerous dropkicks not want to save and preserve our native flora and fauna? Not to mention the huge potential cost to the primary sector economy if TB got away on us?
The ugly The weather: Climate change deniers will have a tough
Love or loath his message, Dr Mike Joy, the artist formerly known as a fresh water ecologist at Massey University has been a polarising appointment to Pamu. While I admire his passion and quite like the guy, I don’t like his anti-farming politics. Yes, farmers can improve their act. So could the ironically-surnamed good Doctor, if he was a tad more conciliatory in his barbed rhetoric. Has he not heard of the word carrot? Rural mental health: Why is it that rural folk are 1.5 times more likely to take their lives than their urban counterparts? I lost a near and dear friend of close to 50 years in 2018. I know too many families who have suffered the same fate. Let’s try to stop the rot in 2019. Donald Trump, China, Vladimir Putin, Brexit, climate change and global warming: We live in challenging and uncertain times but what’s new there? I’m sure folks in 1914, 1939, 1962 and 2001 thought just the same thing. Thankfully, we are an incredibly resilient species. On a much more cheerful and festive note, to you and yours, merry Christmas and please remember what it’s all about. Family, friends, a bit of faith and a heap of good health! Place in a pestle and mortar and coarsely grind. ■ Combine in a large dish with the garlic, oregano, 3 tablespoons of the lime juice and the oil. Add the chicken thighs and coat well. ■ Cover and refrigerate to marinate for at least 1 hour.

■ In a bowl combine the mayonnaise, remaining lime juice and vinegar then season with salt. Add the cabbage and radishes and toss then scatter over the coriander and lightly toss through. ■ Heat a barbecue to hot. Season the chicken thighs with salt and cook for about 5 minutes each

Glen Currie’s first involvement in New Zealand’s iconic Coast to Coast endurance race was as a Joe Bloggs competitor trying to tick an item off his bucket list. Now, the 36-year-old Methven man is the director of the race which, come February, would see 1000-plus people embark on what Currie described as the adventure of a lifetime. The 2019 Coast to Coast sold out in October, the earliest point at which the field had filled up in 14 years, and it is shaping up to be the biggest in the event’s 35-year history. “The event is iconic. “A lot of places have an endurance event they are famous for, France has the Tour, Hawaii has the Kona Ironman, New Zealand has the Coast to Coast,” Currie said. “The event is as much about the support crews as it is the competitors and these crew are often next year’s racers, as they get to experience the unique atmosphere and want to see it from the competitors’ perspective. “I think the Kathmandu Coast to Coast allows people to get fit, train for something but also provides an adventure compared to other events.” Currie said Kiwis were adventurous by nature. “Especially when you consider our country was discovered by such folk, and then look at the likes of Sir Peter Blake and Sir Edmund Hillary. “The Kathmandu Coast to Coast allows everyday people to have an adventure.” A friend and former race-day foe, Richard Ussher, used to be the event’s race director, but after starting up a new business he approached Currie to see if he would be interested in taking over, which he was. He’d worked in education for 13 years, teaching outdoor education and physical education at Mt Hutt College, and also had his own business, Enduranz Events, which he already ran the Mission Mt Somers trail running race through. Having run the Mission Mt Somers and having competed in the Coast to Coast numerous times himself, Currie was no stranger to the race director role, or the race. But Currie said he was happy on the sidelines these days. “I spend a lot of time checking the course and I have realised that my current state of fitness wouldn’t allow me to compete as such. “However, at times I do think it would be

Dougal Allan and Sam Manson were likely to be the New Zealanders who would make him work for it however, Currie said. The women’s race was also wide open, with a huge amount of depth in the field. “Elina Ussher has won the race a number of times and will continue to be favourite. “However, Simone Maier and Corrine O’Donnell will all be in the running. There are actually over six female competitors who could all win the event,” Currie said. Whoever came across the line first, Currie was just excited he’d be there to greet them as race director. While all the work on the Coast to Coast for him had been done in 2018, it would all pay off in 2019. “The current highlight however would be meeting all the people who are so passionate about the Kathmandu Coast to Coast and listening to their stories in terms of how the race has had such a positive effect on them.” He had one big hope left for the event, and it was one he couldn’t control. “Fine weather. Southee leads fightback Absolutely nothing went right for the hosts early on at Hagley Oval yesterday. The grin plastered across Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal’s face at the toss was the biggest indication, as he opted to bowl first on a wicket that was greener than the theoretical grass on the other side. Three hours later, the Black Caps were reeling after one of best spells of Suranga Lakmal’s career. Lakmal’s test bowling average – 39.98 – can be deceiving, with the veteran seamer usually
having to toil away on spinning sub-continent tracks. He would have wanted to chop the Hagley pitch up and take it home with him, such was his opening spell, bowling for a remarkable 16 consecutive overs, taking the first four wickets, and leaving the hosts in disarray. It all culminated in serious trouble for New Zealand, trouble which was only enhanced when Ross Taylor suffered another tremendously unlucky dismissal. Taylor had looked the only comfortable batsman, but was run out (27) backing up at the

It would perhaps be generous to say Southee strategically decided to counter-attack – it is his natural game after all – but regardless, it worked superbly. Read sends a message Back off. That might be the message from All Blacks captain Kieran Read to his critics. Read has told NewstalkZB it took him all of 2018 to get back in reasonable shape after major back surgery, and he sounded confident of upping his game in 2019, when he will bow out of the All Blacks at the World Cup. Despite a year of solid contributions, Read has copped it from a number of places including one of the judges who has just put together the BBC’s World XV of the year. Former England wing Ugo Monye said: “Kieran Read’s a legend of the game, but he’s nowhere near playing at a level which we’ve got used to – he doesn’t even come into the equation for me.” Read didn’t comment directly on the criticism, but he did outline what a tough year it had been. “Getting over back surgery was probably the biggest thing for myself,” he said. “It took a lot of time and effort. It was a big year in a lot of ways but that was probably the main thing. “It’s really good. “It’s been 12 months since the surgery and it probably wasn’t until basically the end of the year where I started feeling somewhat decent physically. “So it bodes well to head into this offseason and pre-season feeling in really good shape. “Where I was at this point last

year, the pain I was in, it [surgery] was needed. “It’s been a fairly fast recovery in some respects. I’ve worked pretty hard at it and I’m in good shape now. “There weren’t too many nerves around the back as such it was more about the whole body and getting it going.” Read confirmed 2019 would be his last as an All Black, before a “short stint” playing in Japan or Europe. He told the Herald in November he will bring down the curtain on his long and illustrious All Blacks career at the World Cup in Japan next year. Read, who recently turned 33, and his wife Bridget have three young children and they have always wanted to have an overseas experience together. They want to have it before their children get too far into their schooling and 2020 is seen as the perfect time, Read said at the time. “As a family it will be a good opportunity,” he told Newstalk ZB. “My wife and kids have made a lot of sacrifices over the years I’ve been playing. It’s probably the hardest thing. “You appreciate that and know how much it takes out of them. Spending more time with them would be cool.” On the All Black losses (to South Africa and Ireland) this year, Read said: “I think we’ve learnt in the past that they can provide a lot of motivation for us.” - NZME

The Mt Somers Mountain Bike Race has undergone a makeover ahead of its 2019 running. Run by the Mayfield and Districts Lions Club in February as one of their big annual fundraising events, the bike race was now known as the Mt Somers Mountain Challenge. Mt Somers Mountain Challenge spokesperson Aubrey Aitken said the new name was chosen as it
reflected the changing nature of events to cater for a wider range of activities. To attract even more competitors, the big race had expanded from just mountain bikers to also include runners and walkers. Its main events from past years – the 31km and 23km mountain bike races – were still on the schedule, but they had been joined by various length duathlon races. The main duathlon was a 17km
mountain bike ride and a 6km run, while there was also a low land duathlon with various courses for different age groups. A 12km mountain run was another new event, along with a two-hour walk.
