Fun, festivity and food were the flavour of the day at yesterday’s Ashburton Community Christmas Lunch.

More than 120 people from all over the Ashburton District flocked to the Tinwald War Memorial Hall for the annual event where more than 30 volunteers

were ready and waiting to serve up some Christmas cheer.

The driving force behind the event, Ann Allott, was the picture of a busy woman as she worked her way around the room ensuring everything was in order before stepping onto the stage to offer a few words of thanks and to light some candles for friends and loved ones who had passed

away during the year before saying grace.

With the formalities out of the way, the food line was opened up and, table by table, people were greeted with a huge amount of food and trimmings served by the volunteers.

This year’s menu was similar to previous years – lamb, ham and turkey with a range of vegetables

followed by pavlova and Christmas pudding.

Transport was also made available to those who were unable to get to the event on their own accord.

A large portion of the food offered as part of the lunch was donated by parts of the community while renowned food preparer, Dan Lysaght of All Fed Up, was

on hand to help with the preparation on what was for him, not only Christmas Day, but also his birthday.

Mayor Donna Favel, flanked by her young great niece, also popped in to spread some Christmas cheer, speaking with everyone present and handing out a small sweet gift to the room while there.

Billboards protest four-lane plan cancellation

If elected in 2017, National had planned to extend State Highway 1 to four lanes between Ashburton and Christchurch. But it lost the election and now motorists have to put up with growing congestion and reduced safety.

So says Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon, who is accusing the Labour Party of cancelling National’s plan.

He has put up signs on the highway just out of Ashburton telling everyone just that.

It is part of a National Party campaign around the country highlighting what the party says are funding cuts to critical roading upgrades.

“Not long after coming into Government, Labour slashed NZTA’s state highway budget, taking more than $5 billion and handing it to Auckland for rail and cycleway projects,” Falloon said.

The Ashburton to Christchurch stretch was the second most dangerous in the country for fatalities and serious injuries, where traffic volumes had doubled since 1997.

“We should be investing now to ensure such a crucial transport corridor for the South Island is able to cope.”

NZTA’s “cut-price option” of a centre median barrier would make the road more dangerous for many.

Government duty minister Dr David Clark pointed out that in nine years in office the former government never funded nor started a four-lane highway between Ashburton and Christchurch.

“It was only ever a National Party election pledge,” Clark said.

Instead of spending billions on a few highways, the coalition government was creating a modern, sustainable transport network “and ensuring all our roads are safer”.

Under the 2018/21 National

Land Transport Programme, neglected regional roads were receiving $5.8 billion, which was a $600 million increase compared to the last government.

“As announced in August, we’re spending $1.7 billion in Canterbury over the next three years on transport infrastructure. This

includes $568 million for state highway improvements and $402 million for state highway maintenance.

“The New Zealand Transport Agency is currently planning safety improvements between Ashburton and the Selwyn River and will build them in 2019.”

Dairy conversions decline in 2018 Mid Canterbury has seen just three new dairy conversions this year, part of a steady decline in conversions across Canterbury since 2013, says Environment Canterbury.

The regional council says its strict water quality limits are holding the line as more scrutiny goes on the impact of farm intensification on local waterways.

The three new conversions in the Ashburton District in 2018 are

all within irrigation scheme areas, where nutrient loads are distributed amongst farmers on an overs and unders basis, but cannot exceed the overall nitrogen load allocated to the scheme.

In the 10 years to 2003, some 200 consents for dairy farms were granted in the Ashburton District and the industry continued to grow; some 274 herds with a combined 217,352 cows made up Ashburton’s dairy industry in the

2008-09 season.

Last year there were 410 herds and 357,381 cows.

ECan, in information released this week on cow numbers and dairy conversions, said nutrient leaching control measures meant that stocking levels were effectively capped for most dairy farmers in Canterbury.

A few farmers operating at the top end of the environmental management spectrum had con-

verted to dairying or extended their existing dairy operations by making significant improvements to ensure they continued to meet nitrogen loss limits, it said.

ECan said the number of dairy cattle in Canterbury reduced substantially from 2015 to 2016 and in 2017 there were 1.3 million cows.

That dropped to 952,363 in the 2017-18 season.

ECan said its data showed a small increase in dairy farming,

demonstrated by the number of dairy effluent consents granted.

There were also 27 applications for an increase in dairy herd size.

The number of conversions in the latest figures were small compared to the total of 1333 farms with effluent consents in the region.

Most of the conversions and increases were in irrigations schemes, where the effluent load was managed in a global consent.

Information centre likely in new year Action on reopening an information base in Ashburton might have dropped off the radar, but it hasn’t ground to a halt.

In October a group of locals put a proposal to the Ashburton District Council that would see the former i-SITE building reopen and since then the council and the group, known as the Ashburton Info Hub (AIH), have been working together to bring the concept to life.

The AIH group was keen to have the centre in business for the summer, but the number of issues that needed to be worked through meant this will not happen until the new year, said group spokesman David West.

“We had been hoping that the centre has been unable to be opened in the preferred timeframe, however, several important steps have been taken and positive progress made.

“There is currently more than one concept on the table and it is hoped that we will be able to reach a solution that benefits tourism in and around Ashburton next year,” he said.

The council and AIH recognised the importance to the community to have an information centre available in Ashburton, albeit with a different and more viable operational model, West said.

“We’re doing our best to see this happen.”

AIH, a charitable trust set up by local business people – David West, Tony Todd and Paul Mullan; accountant, Brendan Adam; and lawyer, Leandra Fitzgibbon, was established following the closure of the i-SITE

David West Information Centre on East Street, in October 2017.

The objective of the group was to provide a sustainable information centre for visitors to Ashburton.

Representatives of AIH presented an outline of their concept to the council’s finance and business support committee on October 18 and after that council chief executive Hamish Riach convened a special meeting between AIH, the council tourism agency Experience Mid Canterbury and council staff to discuss the concept and how it could best proceed.

Work was now proceeding on how the hub team and Experience Mid Canterbury could complement each other.

“We were pleased with the progress made at that initial meeting and the genuine desire to continue developing a model where the services of EMC and AIH would complement and add value to each other. It was most encouraging to see the commitment to on-going discussions,” Riach said.

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel is putting a new spin on building district-to-district relationships, by jumping out of aeroplanes with other mayors.

On Christmas Eve Favel and Mackenzie District Mayor Graham Smith completed a tandem skydive with the help of Skydiving Kiwis who are based at the Ashburton Airport.

Favel said the idea had come about after she attended the business’ seventh birthday event, where a side-comment about wanting to do a skydive turned into a reality.

down to do it was the next Sunday, but that was when the tornado happened so I’m glad we didn’t do it that day,” she said.

She sent out the invite to other mayors in the area, with Smith jumping on board, aided by the fact he was in Ashburton with family for Christmas.

A keen pilot, Smith was joined by his deputy mayor and another keen pilot James Leslie who flew up on the day.

“They actually said I would be the one who would struggle the most as Donna isn’t used to flying in small planes but for me it would be a different experience,” Smith said.

“I’m used to going up in a plane

and coming back down in it.”

Post-jump, it was all smiles and wahoos from the two mayors, both thrilled with the experience.

“Going into it I didn’t know what to expect, but it was fantastic,” Favel said.

“It is cold, you are crammed in there like sardines, but it was fantastic and you get up there and you get to look out across our fantastic district.

“Then you are ready to go and all you can do is hold on for dear life.”

All that remains now, said Favel, was to make it an annual event and to turn it into a mayoral challenge.

Christmas elderly wishes 2018

Garden tidy ‘a miracle’ Randal McDonnell described the granting of his Christmas wish as a miracle.

That’s exactly how he felt when Steve and Sue Stratford and Bruce Henderson arrived recently to clean up his overgrown garden.

Steve and Bruce have known Randal for several years as they were all in the Harriers Club together, so when Randal’s name was put forward for a Christmas wish, Steve didn’t hesitate to volunteer and he roped in the other two as well.

Randal suffers from hydrocephalus, which causes excess fluid in his brain. This in turn causes daily migraines, light sensitivity and poor co-ordination, so gardening for him now is impossible.

Back in 2001 Randal used to enjoy gardening and used it to improve his hand eye co-ordination.

“I was a reluctant gardener at first, but as my co-ordination came back and my fitness improved, I began to enjoy it,” he said.

“Unfortunately, since then my illness has progressed so I can no longer keep up with the weeds.

“I don’t know who put my name forward, but I wish to thank them.

“Life for me can be a bit grim and repetitive these days, so this is a welcome diversion.

“It is very humbling to know that people are thinking of me and are willing to set aside time to help. It’s just like my very own miracle.”

Beehive Class grants Ruth’s window wish When Sister Lagilagia Kelsall, from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints saw the Christmas wishes project she knew it would fit nicely with her Beehive Class and the ‘Light the Community’ week.

“This is the perfect opportunity for them to get out in the community and serve others,” she said.

Ruth Cunningham was equally delighted to have her windows cleaned by the group.

“I love having all these young people here, it’s just delightful,” she said.

Ruth has always had a fondness for young people. In the 1970s she was matron at Southwell Boarding School in Hamilton.

“It was my job to take care of the junior boys. I needed to keep them in line and mother them at

the same time, some of them were only seven.”

Ruth loves having clean windows, she used to able to do them herself, but not anymore.

“I share a cat with the neighbour in front, or maybe he shares us, and he likes to sit on the windowsills.

“I don’t know why I like him so much, he’s not cuddly, won’t answer to his name and makes a mess on my windows, but he’s great company and I love having him around.”

Over the Christmas period Ruth is looking forward to staying at Terrace View for a few days.

“It’s great there, they treat me like royalty and I can have a cup of tea whenever I want.”

Now she can come home to sparkly clean windows.

Rahui put on Whanganui River One man has been found deceased inside a ute which was recovered from the Whanganui River yesterday afternoon.

The four-wheel-drive vehicle went off Victoria Avenue Bridge near Anzac Parade on Christmas Day and was recovered by Police Dive Squad earlier yesterday.

Indications are the man was the sole occupant of the vehicle, police said in a statement.

“Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing,” police said.

“Police would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the crash or who has information that may be of assistance.”

Whanganui District Council announced early yesterday morning that local iwi had imposed a rahui, a ban on fishing and using the river, which would likely be lifted on December 27.

The Police Dive Squad arrived on site about 1pm.

An emergency services staffer at the scene said it was “a sad start to Christmas” but declined to elaborate.

Police would like anyone with information to step forward and get in touch.

Information can be passed on to Whanganui Police on 06 349 0600.

In brief Road repair The Ashburton District Council is asking road users to be patient as their contractors tackle repairs on roads in the Methven and foothills area damaged by the weekend’s big rainfall. There was considerable surface flooding and scour damage to unsealed roads and contractors have been arranged to attend to issues – but repairs may take time over the holiday period. Council is urging people to take care and drive to the conditions. Sunshine bridges over the Hinds River have also been washed out and will be closed for the holiday period.

An important Christmas event I

t is said that Christmas is the time of giving and that was nowhere near more evident yesterday than at the Tinwald War Memorial Hall for the annual Community Christmas Lunch.

For many of us, Christmas is a day where we surround ourselves by family and friends enjoy copious amounts of food and just simply enjoy companionship and festive fun.

But the reality is that it’s not the case for everyone and for a lot of people this time of the year is a lonely time where there’s a real void that needs to be filled.

So, events like the Community

Lunch are an incredible outlet in which that much needed feeling of togetherness can be found for people when it is most needed.

And this district is incredibly lucky to have the services of a wonderful team of people who, year after year, roll their sleeves

up and get stuck in to offer such an event for people.

Mainly that attention and thanks needs to be pointed in the direction of Ann Allott who organises the entire event along with her team of helpers.

Ann’s efforts are quite remarkable, and it is because of her work that the event is always held without a glitch and seen upon by the community as such a wonderful occasion.

But she can’t just do it on her own.

So, that’s where the rest of the community comes in.

From hosts at tables, through to food preparers, food serv-

ers and those at the front door offering a Christmas greeting as people flow through the door – everything is covered by people who have generously given their time.

And the joy on people’s faces as they saw what was being offered to them as they walked into the hall would have to have been reward enough for anyone.

As stated earlier on, Christmas is a tough time for some people and it is vitally important that this community continues to ensure this event carries on for many years to come.

Whether it’s because of financial hardship, loneliness or just

a strong yearning to be around like-minded people there are people who need this occasion.

But sadly, around the country the community lunch is becoming a thing of the past.

It is believed in some quarters that too many people take the event as a bit of a free ride to avoid having to cook themselves, but there was no sight of that yesterday in Ashburton.

Everyone who was there was there for the right reasons and the clear sense of appreciation was evident in their smiles as they received their meals with big smiles from those on the other side of the serving buffet.

Indonesia suffers again The deadly tsunami struck in the dark, without warning.

At least 222 people were killed as waves smashed into houses, hotels and other beachside buildings on Saturday night along Indonesia’s Sunda Strait, in a disaster that followed an eruption and possible landslide on Anak Krakatau, one of the world’s most infamous volcanic islands.

More than 800 others were injured and dozens were reported missing after the tsunami hit coastal areas along western Java and southern Sumatra islands at 9.27pm amid a Christmas holiday weekend, the Disaster Management Agency said.

The death toll could increase once authorities hear from all stricken areas.

It was the second deadly tsunami to hit Indonesia this year, but the one that killed more than 2500 people on the island of Sulawesi on September 28 was accompanied by a powerful earthquake that gave residents a brief warning before the waves struck.

On Saturday night, the ground did not shake beforehand to alert people to the oncoming wave that ripped buildings from their foundations in seconds and swept terrified concertgoers on a popular resort beach into the sea.

A dramatic video went viral showing the stage heaving forward and buckling in the middle of the performance, tossing the band into the audience.

Scientists said the tsunami could have been caused by landslides – either above ground or under water – on the steep slope of the erupting Anak Krakatau volcano. The scientists also cited tidal waves caused by the full moon.

Disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said 222 deaths had been confirmed and at least 843 people were injured.

The worst-affected area was the Pandeglang region of Java’s Banten province, which encompasses Ujung Kulon National Park and popular beaches, the agency said.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo expressed his sympathy and ordered government agencies to respond quickly to the disaster.

In the city of Bandar Lampung on Sumatra, hundreds of residents took refuge at the governor’s office, while at the popular resort area of Anyer beach on Java, some survivors wandered in the debris.

Nine hotels and hundreds of homes were heavily damaged by the waves.

Broken chunks of concrete and splintered sticks of wood littered hard-hit coastal areas, turning beach getaways popular with Jakarta residents into near ghost towns.

Vehicles were tossed into the rubble or were buried under collapsed roofs. Debris from thatch-bamboo shacks was strewn along beaches.

Yellow, orange and black body bags were laid out, and weeping relatives identified the dead.

US shutdown could extend into January The US government is expected to remain partially closed past Christmas Day in a protracted stand-off over President Donald Trump’s demand for money to build a border wall with Mexico.

On the second day of the federal closure, Trump tweeted that what the country needs is “a good old fashioned WALL that works”, as opposed to aerial drones and other measures that “are wonderful and lots of fun” but not the right answer to address the problem of “drugs, gangs, human trafficking, criminal elements and much else from coming into” the US. With Trump’s insistence on $US5 billion for the wall and negotiations with Democrats in congress far from a breakthrough, even a temporary measure to keep the government running while talks continued seems out of reach until the Senate returns for a full session Thursday.

“It’s very possible the shutdown will go beyond the 28th and into the new congress,” Mulvaney said on Fox News.

“I dont think things are going to move very quickly here the next couple of days.”

From coast to coast, the first day of the shutdown played out in uneven ways.

The Statue of Liberty was still open for tours, thanks to money from New York state, and the US Post Office was

still delivering mail, as an independent agency.

Yet the disruption has affected many government operations and the routines of 800,000 federal employees.

No one knew how long the closures would last.

Unlike other shutdowns, this one seemed to lack urgency, coming during the long holiday weekend after Trump had already declared Monday, Christmas Eve, a federal holiday.

Rather than work around the clock to try to end the shutdown, as they had done in the past, the leaders of the House and the Senate effectively closed up shop.

“I am in the White House, working hard,” tweeted the president at the weekend. He had cancelled his Florida holiday getaway because of the shutdown.

Trump’s re-election campaign sent out a fundraising email launching what he called “the most important membership program ever – the OFFICIAL BUILD THE WALL MEMBERSHIP”.

With Democrats set to take control of the House on January 3, and House Speaker Paul Ryan on his way out, the shutdown was providing a last gasp of the conservative majority before the new congress.

Trump savoured the prospect of a shutdown over the wall for months.

Last week he said he would be “proud” to close down the government. He had campaigned on the promise of building the wall, and he also promised Mexico would pay for it. Mexico has refused to do so.

Senior Democrat Chuck Schumer said the “Trump shutdown” could end immediately if the president simply dropped his demand for money.

“If you want to open the government, you must abandon the wall,” Schumer said.

But Trump, digging in, tweeted about “the crisis of illegal activity” at American’s southern border is “real and will not stop until we build a great Steel Barrier or Wall”.

The couple exchanged vows in a ceremony at their Los Angeles home on Saturday, which was Trainor’s 25th birthday. “It’s the beginning of an awesome, whole new life,” she said. “I got way more than I ever wished for.” Sabara said he was “the luckiest guy in the world” after marrying the chart star. The couple got engaged a year ago, when Spy Kids actor Sabara surprised Trainor with a proposal on her 24th birthday.

Lovato recovering Demi Lovato said she is “sober and grateful to be alive” as she asked for “time to heal” during her recovery from a suspected overdose. The US pop star, 26, was taken ill at her home in Los Angeles in July amid reports she had relapsed in her battle with addiction. Lovato has been open about her struggles with substance abuse. The star had spent a period in rehab following the latest setback and on Friday tweeted to say “don’t believe what you read”. She said: “I love my fans, and hate tabloids.” She later added: “If I feel like the world needs to know something, I will tell them MYSELF. Otherwise people stop writing about my recovery, because it’s no one’s business but mine. I am sober and grateful to be alive and taking care of ME.

Her new role in Mary Queen of Scots, gave her the opportunity to do both. Ronan, who is Irish, says she was not only excited to play Mary Stuart, a Celtic woman who ruled Scotland in the 16th century, but also to take on such a meaty part. Ronan, 24, has often played girls who are still finding their way in the world. But Mary Queen of Scots provided the transition to full womanhood as her character falls in love, becomes a mother, and rides a horse into battle.

o matter how many people sit around your Christmas dinner table, there are always leftovers. And while they might be fine to pick away at on Boxing Day, the bits and pieces that hang around any longer than that definitely need to be reinvented, restyled and presented in a way that no one cries, ‘oh, not leftovers again’.

Yesterday’s turkey salad

■ Add a generous amount of dressing to the cooked potatoes and fold through gently.

■ Sprinkle with diced ham and parsley.

½ C rice vinegar 1 T fish sauce 3 T sugar 1 t sesame oil 1 shallot, finely sliced 2 carrots, grated ¼ cabbage, white, shredded ¼ red cabbage, shredded 1 Lebanese cucumber, finely sliced 1 red chilli, large, finely sliced 1 handful mint leaves, finely sliced 2 C turkey leftovers, shredded 1 C toasted peanuts, chopped

Turkey carbonara

■ Mix the rice vinegar, fish sauce, sugar, sesame oil and shallot together.

■ Leave to marinate while you chop all the vegetables for the salad.

■ Place the carrot, cabbage, cucumber, mint and chilli in a large bowl.

■ Mix through the dressing and the leftover meat. Pile on to plates and sprinkle peanuts on top to serve.

Leftovers in couscous

■

1 C couscous 2 C sliced leftover turkey 1 C water 1 lemon ¼ C olive oil 300g green beans 1 C cherry tomatoes ½ C walnuts, toasted and coarsely chopped ¼ C parsley ■ Place couscous in a bowl, pour

over boiling water and stir briefly.

Cover with plastic wrap and leave for five minutes to steam and soften.

Fluff up couscous with a fork.

Pour over lemon juice and olive oil, season with salt and pepper and toss well to combine.

Cook beans in boiling, salted water for two to three minutes until just tender.

Drain and plunge into ice cold water to cool.

Drain beans well and combine with couscous and all the remaining salad ingredients.

Toss well and serve.

Cheese and ham pinwheel scones 3 C self-raising flour 1 t salt 100g butter 2 C tasty cheese 2 spring onions trimmed and finely sliced 2 T parsley finely chopped 1 C milk

Filling: ham, cut into pieces ½ C cheese grated 2 T fresh herbs roughly chopped milk to glaze

minutes or until golden and just cooked through.

■ Preheat the oven to 210°C. ■ Sift dry ingredients together.

■ Make a well and grate butter into centre.

■ Rub butter into flour. Add cheese, spring onion and parsley and mix.

■ Make a well in the centre again and mix in the milk, reserving ¼ cup until near the end.

■ Work quickly, adding just enough milk for dough to bind.

■ Tip onto a floured board and pat it together; try not to over-handle or it dough will get tough.

■ Flatten it out to a rectangle then roll out to about 1cm thick and halve lengthways.

■ Add the filling along the centre of each roll.

■ Roll up from long side to make two long rolls.

■ With seam side down, cut into 2cm-thick slices and place on tray.

■ Brush with milk and bake for 12

125g cream cheese (approx half a pottle) 2 handfuls of shredded cold turkey 3 T cranberry sauce 1 C grated cheese 1 large pizza base

30g unsalted butter 4 bacon rashers, thinly sliced 2 T pine nuts 4 eggs, beaten 300ml thickened cream 3 garlic cloves, crushed 1/3 C (25g) finely grated parmesan, plus extra to serve 500g spaghetti 2 C (320g) shredded cooked turkey 2 T chopped flat-leaf parsley, plus extra to serve

■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Spread the cranberry sauce liberally over the pizza base.

■ Evenly distribute the shredded turkey.

■ Dot pieces of cream cheese over the turkey.

■ Throw the grated cheese over the top.

■ Bake pizza until base is cooked through and cheese is melted .

Ham and potato salad 1kg of waxy potatoes cooked, cooled and cut in half

■ Melt the butter in a deep frypan over medium-low heat.

■ Add the bacon and cook until just starting to crisp.

■ Add the pine nuts and cook, stirring, for a further minute or until they start to brown.

■ In a bowl big enough to hold the cooked pasta, whisk together the eggs, cream, garlic and parmesan.

■ Add bacon and pine nuts, and season with salt and pepper.

■ Cook the pasta according to packet instructions, then drain well.

■ Immediately add the hot pasta to the egg mixture and toss for 1 minute, allowing the heat from the pasta to cook the sauce.

■ Stir through the turkey and parsley, and serve topped with extra parmesan and parsley.

Murray Roulston returned to New Zealand earlier this month after a stint coaching in Kenya.

As a rugby coach Murray Roulston has travelled the world teaching players the ins and outs of the game he loves, but his latest coaching job was by far the biggest challenge he’d ever tackled.

Roulston has spent much of the past year in Kenya coaching the national side and trying to build a pathway for the future in a country where rugby was the fastest growing sport, and while he found that there was no shortage of talent, a vital part of the jigsaw puzzle was well and truly in short supply.

That was money.

Roulston said when he arrived, players weren’t coming to training because they hadn’t been paid for three months.

In a country where money and jobs were hard to come by, they simply couldn’t afford to get there.

“The corruption in Kenya is unbelievable.

“You can talk to four different people and you get four different stories and you have to work out who’s talking the most truth, so it’s unbelievably challenging,” Roulston said.

“I can assure you it was the hardest place I’ve ever been in my life for coaching.

“Unless you were there to experience it, you wouldn’t know how tough it was.”

Roulston went to Kenya believing the money, resources and facilities would be what was required to do the job, but quickly found out that things weren’t as they seemed.

There was no set training

ground, the gym was barely bigger than a kitchen, and the weights and equipment were old-fashioned.

Basically, the facilities were non-existent, Roulston said.

“I think we had seven different training grounds while I was in Kenya in the first stint, and we had to keep changing because they didn’t have the money to pay the fund for the fields,” Roulston said.

Although there were challenges, there were plenty of positives too, and the biggest one of those was the talent, Roulston said.

“The exciting thing is, in Kenya if they can get their act together the athletes are there.

“The talent is there; the talent is unbelievable,” Roulston said.

“If we were just there to coach the rugby, it would be easy.

“But around every corner, there’s an obstacle.”

He attended schoolboy tournaments and the talent he saw was as good as anywhere in New Zealand.

And Roulston knows his stuff.

After growing up in Mid Canterbury and playing more than 130 games for his home province during what was a golden era for Mid Canterbury rugby, playing for the South Island three times and making All Blacks trials once, Roulston turned to coaching.

He coached Mid Canterbury’s under-18s, then the senior side, before heading to Wanganui in a rugby development officer role.

From there he headed to Otago where he again worked in rugby development for eight years, coaching the Otago B and sevens sides, and running their academy.

He then did a six-week stint in Japan and they wanted him to stay on, but with dreams of coaching Otago, Roulston returned home.

Those dreams were dashed when Otago brought Laurie Mains back from South Africa though, so Roulston decided to head back to Japan.

He returned to New Zealand to take up a role as high performance director of rugby for the Highlanders region, before the Hurricanes came calling.

He spent six years with the Hurricanes before being asked to go to Romania to help out for a couple of months, and from there he headed to Trinidad and Tobago in a director for rugby role.

That was an eye-opening experience that would be topped only by what met him in Kenya, and when he returned from Trinidad just before the Rugby World Cup in 2011, Roulston decided it was time to finish.

That was, until Kenya came calling.

“They phoned up in December 2017 and said ‘we have been looking for a New Zealand coach and we have come up with your name and we want you to come to Kenya’,” Roulston said.

“I said ‘no show’ and left it at that.”

But three days later they called again and tried to talk him around.

Roulston said a friend of his in the North Island, Ian Snook, could be the man for the job and suggested he could give him a call.

Snook was keen but said he’d only do it if Roulston went too.

So Roulston decided to give it a go and the pair headed over, with

The pair took up a year contract in Kenya which takes them through to March next year.

But when Roulston returned to New Zealand in December, whether he’d return was still up in the air.

He hadn’t been paid for two months.

Money was one of the biggest challenges in Kenya.

Funding for all sports had dried up, so it was off the park where the biggest challenges came.

On the park, Kenya had piles of potential, Roulston said.

Under Roulston and Snook, Kenya played Uganda in the Elgon Cup before playing in the African Gold Cup where a spot at the Rugby World Cup was on the line.

They played Zimbabwe, Uganda, Morocco, Tunisia and Namibia and won all except the one against Namibia, so the Namibians took that world cup spot.

Kenya had one last chance to qualify for the world cup, through a repecharge in France with Germany, Hong Kong and Canada, but again they missed out.

The team wasn’t helped by the fact that most of their preparation games ended up not happening, and they didn’t know if they’d even be going to the repecharge until two hours before they were due to leave because no one had been paid.

When their money came through, they went.

With money and jobs so hard to come by and only about five of the players playing under Roulston and Snook having some sort

of employment, and eight or nine studying, they had to improvise.

They’d train at 6am, to allow the players who did have work to go to, to get there.

But sometimes even getting there was a challenge.

One day a player was a couple of hours late to training; turned out he’d been held up at gunpoint on the way.

That wasn’t an unusual occurrence.

Between his stints in Kenya and Trinidad, Roulston had witnessed his fair share of trouble.

But, he never felt unsafe.

After a challenging eight months in Kenya, Roulston was hopeful about the future of the sport he’d made a career from, in the African nation which had already proven itself to be a threat on the sevens stage.

But he said to get things to where they needed to be in terms of 15s rugby, it was really a fiveyear programme, and at the moment there just wasn’t the money to make it happen.

“The exciting thing for us is the CEO said that the results we got were the best in Kenyan history,” Roulston said.

“The exciting thing is the players are there, the capability is there, it’s just whether they can ever get their society right from the government down and get the right procedures in place to get the rewards that they deserve.”

Kenya had been a challenge, but it was one Roulston was glad he’d taken on.

“All in all it was a hell of a life experience and I’m so pleased I did it.”

It is the second time in as many years Handscomb has been dropped two tests into the summer, with Marsh’s part-time seamers getting him the nod.

Mid Canterbury Rugby Union rugby development officer Jason Ree said the session was aimed at players from under-14 through to under-18 or first XV level and it was a chance to have a last blowout before Christmas. Black Caps eye a spot in history The Black Caps are ready for their final test of 2018 – and they could end the year on a historic note.

A victory over Sri Lanka in the test series decider starting at Hagley Oval today would give the Black Caps a fourth straight test series victory – a feat that would be unprecedented in New Zealand’s 88 years of test cricket.

The Black Caps have won three

test series’ in a row on three prior occasions, but each time they couldn’t make it four on the trot.

The most impressive winning streak came in 1985-1986, when they reeled off consecutive series victories over Australia (twice) and England, while they also reached the mark in 2005-2006 (beating Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and the West Indies) and 2013-2014,

triumphing over the West Indies (twice) and India.

Now, with their two-test series against Sri Lanka deadlocked, they have an excellent chance to eclipse their prior streaks.

Harness born and bred Young Mid Canterbury horseman, John Morrison is making every post a winner and currently sits near the top of the national drivers’ premiership for junior drivers. He also recently branched out and obtained his first success as a trainer. MATT MARKHAM caught up with the rising star ahead of one of the busiest times of the year.

The saying that success breeds success in the horse racing world is a commonly used term.

One only has to casually look into the industry to see that it’s dominated by families who have set the tempo for decades, with the odd new face scattered amongst the crowd from time to time.

But the real industry purists will tell you that it’s not the flashy last names, or the big heaving stables that keep a, sometimes, struggling game afloat, but instead the smaller folk.

The ones who might train two or three horses as a hobby to their main role, they are the ones who are the beating heart of the code.

Mid Canterbury lad John Morrison hails from one of those very families, and he like other local names such as O’Reilly, McCormick, Hay and Hanrahan are just further instalments of long family lines of industry participants trying to foot it from week to week with the big guns.

And he’s doing a good job of it too.

Morrison was bred into the harness racing game, his late mother, Suzy was an astute horsewomen and his father Chris is a renowned saddler and trainer himself around the Canterbury region.

From a young age, even this writer remembers the young Morrison kid hanging around at the races, helping whoever he could – holding conversations with men who were sometimes five six or even seven times his own age.

But it’s taken a while to get warmed up.

The elusive first win as a junior driver took a while to unfold – and plenty of drives, but Morrison never let it get to him.

“It was frustrating,” he said.

“But I just had to wait for it to happen, there was no reason to get all worked up about it or anything.”

Now though, Morrison’s off and racing – literally.

With 20 wins on the board for the season he sits second on the national junior drivers’ premiership leader board, just one win behind current leader, Sheree Tomlinson.

The season has seen him hitting the road most weeks and heading down into the depths

of Southland to take drives and with a strong support base down there, it’s proving to be a successful attack.

“I’ve been really lucky to have got some huge support from a number of trainers down there.

“It’s a big effort to go down there most weeks and it does take it out of you, but driving some nice horses always helps.”

Morrison is splitting his time between driving all over the South Island, doing farrier work around the Canterbury region and also helping out leading trainer Paul Court at his stable in West Melton in the mornings.

And on top of all that, he’s training his own small team of three horses as well.

“Three is plenty for me; I work them around my commitments

at Paul’s, where I spend a couple of mornings a week, mostly working on the young ones.”

After highlighting his prowess in the sulky in the early parts of the season, Morrison stepped things up again last month when he claimed his first win as a trainer.

Unlike his first driving success, the first training win took nowhere near as long when No Fears was victorious at only the 14th time Morrison had taken a horse to the races.

And he’d only just got started with No Fears who joined his team a month or so earlier.

He took over the training of the eight-year-old from Patrick O’Reilly after his Aunt, Michelle Baird, sent him the horse on a deal.

“Michelle is my mum’s sister.

Their father was Jack McDonald and it is actually his colours that I wear.

“They hadn’t been out for a while (1982) so it was good to get a win in them with the family connection.”

Morrison’s pink colours will be a sight around the South Island over the coming weeks as we enter into one of the busiest racing periods of the season.

The young horseman will be down in Gore on December 27 where he has some strong drives before hitting the road again and being at venues like Motukarara, potentially Reefton and then down to the Central Otago circuit after New Year.

“It’s a busy time of the year, but a great time because there’s so much racing to enjoy.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

In brief 200th win for Bary Hawke’s Bay trainer John Bary secured his 200th New Zealand win as a trainer on Saturday and he believes the horse he reached the milestone with has the potential to be his next stable star. That horse is talented twoyear-old The Fugitive, who won the Goodwood Stud 2YO Premier (1100m) at Awapuni by 2-1/2 lengths and Bary has labelled the colt as the best juvenile in his stable. “He’s my number one twoyear-old, he’s always been at the top of the pecking order just on professionalism on the track,” he said. “We have just been waiting to unleash him really.”

Tiley camp confident While he is the first to admit that promising filly House Of Cartier faces a massive task at Ellerslie today, trainer Nigel Tiley is not backing away from the fight. Successful in maiden company at her last start, House Of Cartier will tackle the big league when she takes her place in the Gr.2 Cambridge Stud Eight Carat Classic. The daughter of multiple Group One winner Shez Sinsational created a huge impression when she sat threewide before powering to victory over 1400m at Pukekohe, in a race where the form has stacked up well in the following weeks. - NZME

Hard racing required Tough love time starts for Let It Ride at Ballarat tonight. Trainer Tim Butt thinks the emerging star needs some hard racing and has mapped it out over the next six weeks. It starts with a race he should be simply too classy for his six rivals in, the $20,000 Lightning Sprint (1710m) at Ballarat. “I think he just needs more racing and regularly to get back to the form he showed winning the Blacks A Fake in Queensland during the winter,” Butt said. “There are three or four suitable races for him before the Ballarat and Hunter Cups.” Miracle Mile-winning stablemate My Field Marshal has settled well in Perth and opens his Gloucester Park campaign in Friday night’s $50,000 Group 2 Village Kid. - HRNZ

Natalie Shaw is Mid Canterbury Netball’s new netball development officer.

Natalie Shaw has learnt a lot in the past few weeks, and early next year she’ll get the opportunity to start putting what she’s been learning into practice.

Shaw is Mid Canterbury Netball’s new netball development officer, tasked with teaching the sport to youngsters and growing the game in the region, and so far the role has involved a lot of planning and training.

But come term one next year, she’ll be ready to hit the ground running.

“It’s about fostering the love and

education of netball in our community, and my focus will be particularly at junior level and coaching in schools will be my priority,” Shaw said.

With a degree in English literature behind her, Shaw had always intended to undertake a post graduate in secondary school teaching with an eye to becoming a secondary school English teacher, but then the Mid Canterbury Netball role came along and it was the perfect fit for her, so those future study plans had been put on the backburner.

The new job had added to what had already been a big year for

Shaw. She only moved to Ashburton at the start of this year with her husband and their five children, aged 12, 10, eight, six and four, when her husband – a lawyer – got a job in town.

Keen to settle down before their oldest daughter started at high school, Shaw said the family knew little about Ashburton before they moved, but it had turned out to be the perfect move.

They came to Ashburton from a year living in Auckland, and before that had spent 10 years in Australia, living in the Brisbane CBD. In Ashburton they’d found a

slower pace of life which meant they were able to spend quality family time together and feel like they were really part of a community.

Shaw took on the role of coaching the Ashburton Borough School A netball team and after only having played a bit of indoor social netball herself in recent years, started playing competition netball again for the first time in more than a decade, and she had loved doing both.

Shaw – a mid-court defender – was picked up by the United A team.

The team’s coach, Claire Tap-

pin, met Shaw at the Ashburton Public Library one day when she was there with the school, and Tappin asked her if she played netball.

Now, both Tappin and Shaw work for Mid Canterbury Netball – Shaw as the netball development officer, and Tappin as the coach developer.

While Shaw’s role will involve a lot of work in schools and with the younger players, she will also be introducing walking netball and a ladies’ daytime section to Mid Canterbury next year, to get even more people playing the game.
